Large vision Transformers (ViTs) driven by self-supervised pre-training mechanisms achieved unprecedented progress. Lightweight ViT models limited by the model capacity, however, benefit little from those pre-training mechanisms. Knowledge distillation defines a paradigm to transfer representations from large (teacher) models to small (student) ones. However, the conventional single-stage distillation easily gets stuck on task-specific transfer, failing to retain the task-agnostic knowledge crucial for model generalization. In this study, we propose generic-to-specific distillation (G2SD), to tap the potential of small ViT models under the supervision of large models pre-trained by masked autoencoders. In generic distillation, decoder of the small model is encouraged to align feature predictions with hidden representations of the large model, so that task-agnostic knowledge can be transferred. In specific distillation, predictions of the small model are constrained to be consistent with those of the large model, to transfer task-specific features which guarantee task performance. With G2SD, the vanilla ViT-Small model respectively achieves 98.7%, 98.1% and 99.3% the performance of its teacher (ViT-Base) for image classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation, setting a solid baseline for two-stage vision distillation. Fast-iTPN: Integrally Pre-Trained Transformer Pyramid Network with Token MigrationYunjie Tian, Lingxi Xie, Jihao Qiu et al.
We propose integrally pre-trained transformer pyramid network (iTPN), towards jointly optimizing the network backbone and the neck, so that transfer gap between representation models and downstream tasks is minimal. iTPN is born with two elaborated designs: 1) The first pre-trained feature pyramid upon vision transformer (ViT). 2) Multi-stage supervision to the feature pyramid using masked feature modeling (MFM). iTPN is updated to Fast-iTPN, reducing computational memory overhead and accelerating inference through two flexible designs. 1) Token migration: dropping redundant tokens of the backbone while replenishing them in the feature pyramid without attention operations. 2) Token gathering: reducing computation cost caused by global attention by introducing few gathering tokens. The base/large-level Fast-iTPN achieve 88.75%/89.5% top-1 accuracy on ImageNet-1K. With 1x training schedule using DINO, the base/large-level Fast-iTPN achieves 58.4%/58.8% box AP on COCO object detection, and a 57.5%/58.7% mIoU on ADE20K semantic segmentation using MaskDINO. Fast-iTPN can accelerate the inference procedure by up to 70%, with negligible performance loss, demonstrating the potential to be a powerful backbone for downstream vision tasks. Beyond Masking: Demystifying Token-Based Pre-Training for Vision TransformersYunjie Tian, Lingxi Xie, Jiemin Fang et al.
The past year has witnessed a rapid development of masked image modeling (MIM). MIM is mostly built upon the vision transformers, which suggests that self-supervised visual representations can be done by masking input image parts while requiring the target model to recover the missing contents. MIM has demonstrated promising results on downstream tasks, yet we are interested in whether there exist other effective ways to `learn by recovering missing contents'. In this paper, we investigate this topic by designing five other learning objectives that follow the same procedure as MIM but degrade the input image in different ways. With extensive experiments, we manage to summarize a few design principles for token-based pre-training of vision transformers. In particular, the best practice is obtained by keeping the original image style and enriching spatial masking with spatial misalignment -- this design achieves superior performance over MIM in a series of downstream recognition tasks without extra computational cost. Spatial Self-Distillation for Object Detection with Inaccurate Bounding BoxesDi Wu, Pengfei Chen, Xuehui Yu et al.
Object detection via inaccurate bounding boxes supervision has boosted a broad interest due to the expensive high-quality annotation data or the occasional inevitability of low annotation quality (\eg tiny objects). The previous works usually utilize multiple instance learning (MIL), which highly depends on category information, to select and refine a low-quality box. Those methods suffer from object drift, group prediction and part domination problems without exploring spatial information. In this paper, we heuristically propose a \textbf{Spatial Self-Distillation based Object Detector (SSD-Det)} to mine spatial information to refine the inaccurate box in a self-distillation fashion. SSD-Det utilizes a Spatial Position Self-Distillation \textbf{(SPSD)} module to exploit spatial information and an interactive structure to combine spatial information and category information, thus constructing a high-quality proposal bag. To further improve the selection procedure, a Spatial Identity Self-Distillation \textbf{(SISD)} module is introduced in SSD-Det to obtain spatial confidence to help select the best proposals. Experiments on MS-COCO and VOC datasets with noisy box annotation verify our method's effectiveness and achieve state-of-the-art performance. DQnet: Cross-Model Detail Querying for Camouflaged Object DetectionWei Sun, Chengao Liu, Linyan Zhang et al.
Camouflaged objects are seamlessly blended in with their surroundings, which brings a challenging detection task in computer vision. Optimizing a convolutional neural network (CNN) for camouflaged object detection (COD) tends to activate local discriminative regions while ignoring complete object extent, causing the partial activation issue which inevitably leads to missing or redundant regions of objects. In this paper, we argue that partial activation is caused by the intrinsic characteristics of CNN, where the convolution operations produce local receptive fields and experience difficulty to capture long-range feature dependency among image regions. In order to obtain feature maps that could activate full object extent, keeping the segmental results from being overwhelmed by noisy features, a novel framework termed Cross-Model Detail Querying network (DQnet) is proposed. It reasons the relations between long-range-aware representations and multi-scale local details to make the enhanced representation fully highlight the object regions and eliminate noise on non-object regions. Specifically, a vanilla ViT pretrained with self-supervised learning (SSL) is employed to model long-range dependencies among image regions. A ResNet is employed to enable learning fine-grained spatial local details in multiple scales. Then, to effectively retrieve object-related details, a Relation-Based Querying (RBQ) module is proposed to explore window-based interactions between the global representations and the multi-scale local details. Extensive experiments are conducted on the widely used COD datasets and show that our DQnet outperforms the current state-of-the-arts.

Correspondence-Guided SfM-Free 3D Gaussian Splatting for NVSWei Sun, Xiaosong Zhang, Fang Wan et al.
Novel View Synthesis (NVS) without Structure-from-Motion (SfM) pre-processed camera poses--referred to as SfM-free methods--is crucial for promoting rapid response capabilities and enhancing robustness against variable operating conditions. Recent SfM-free methods have integrated pose optimization, designing end-to-end frameworks for joint camera pose estimation and NVS. However, most existing works rely on per-pixel image loss functions, such as L2 loss. In SfM-free methods, inaccurate initial poses lead to misalignment issue, which, under the constraints of per-pixel image loss functions, results in excessive gradients, causing unstable optimization and poor convergence for NVS. In this study, we propose a correspondence-guided SfM-free 3D Gaussian splatting for NVS. We use correspondences between the target and the rendered result to achieve better pixel alignment, facilitating the optimization of relative poses between frames. We then apply the learned poses to optimize the entire scene. Each 2D screen-space pixel is associated with its corresponding 3D Gaussians through approximated surface rendering to facilitate gradient back propagation. Experimental results underline the superior performance and time efficiency of the proposed approach compared to the state-of-the-art baselines.

P2RBox: Point Prompt Oriented Object Detection with SAMGuangming Cao, Xuehui Yu, Wenwen Yu et al.
Single-point annotation in oriented object detection of remote sensing scenarios is gaining increasing attention due to its cost-effectiveness. However, due to the granularity ambiguity of points, there is a significant performance gap between previous methods and those with fully supervision. In this study, we introduce P2RBox, which employs point prompt to generate rotated box (RBox) annotation for oriented object detection. P2RBox employs the SAM model to generate high-quality mask proposals. These proposals are then refined using the semantic and spatial information from annotation points. The best masks are converted into oriented boxes based on the feature directions suggested by the model. P2RBox incorporates two advanced guidance cues: Boundary Sensitive Mask guidance, which leverages semantic information, and Centrality guidance, which utilizes spatial information to reduce granularity ambiguity. This combination enhances detection capabilities significantly. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, enhancements based on the baseline were observed by integrating three different detectors. Furthermore, compared to the state-of-the-art point-annotated generative method PointOBB, P2RBox outperforms by about 29% mAP (62.43% vs 33.31%) on DOTA-v1.0 dataset, which provides possibilities for the practical application of point annotations.

Depth-guided Texture Diffusion for Image Semantic SegmentationWei Sun, Yuan Li, Qixiang Ye et al.
Depth information provides valuable insights into the 3D structure especially the outline of objects, which can be utilized to improve the semantic segmentation tasks. However, a naive fusion of depth information can disrupt feature and compromise accuracy due to the modality gap between the depth and the vision. In this work, we introduce a Depth-guided Texture Diffusion approach that effectively tackles the outlined challenge. Our method extracts low-level features from edges and textures to create a texture image. This image is then selectively diffused across the depth map, enhancing structural information vital for precisely extracting object outlines. By integrating this enriched depth map with the original RGB image into a joint feature embedding, our method effectively bridges the disparity between the depth map and the image, enabling more accurate semantic segmentation. We conduct comprehensive experiments across diverse, commonly-used datasets spanning a wide range of semantic segmentation tasks, including Camouflaged Object Detection (COD), Salient Object Detection (SOD), and indoor semantic segmentation. With source-free estimated depth or depth captured by depth cameras, our method consistently outperforms existing baselines and achieves new state-of-theart results, demonstrating the effectiveness of our Depth-guided Texture Diffusion for image semantic segmentation.

Kangaroo: A Powerful Video-Language Model Supporting Long-context Video InputJiajun Liu, Yibing Wang, Hanghang Ma et al.
Rapid advancements have been made in extending Large Language Models (LLMs) to Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs). However, extending input modality of LLMs to video data remains a challenging endeavor, especially for long videos. Due to insufficient access to large-scale high-quality video data and the excessive compression of visual features, current methods exhibit limitations in effectively processing long videos. In this paper, we introduce Kangaroo, a powerful Video LMM aimed at addressing these challenges. Confronted with issue of inadequate training data, we develop a data curation system to build a large-scale dataset with high-quality annotations for vision-language pre-training and instruction tuning. In addition, we design a curriculum training pipeline with gradually increasing resolution and number of input frames to accommodate long videos. Evaluation results demonstrate that, with 8B parameters, Kangaroo achieves state-of-the-art performance across a variety of video understanding benchmarks while exhibiting competitive results on others. Particularly, on benchmarks specialized for long videos, Kangaroo excels some larger models with over 10B parameters and proprietary models.

Adaptive Keyframe Sampling for Long Video UnderstandingXi Tang, Jihao Qiu, Lingxi Xie et al.
Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have enabled open-world visual understanding by injecting visual input as extra tokens into large language models (LLMs) as contexts. However, when the visual input changes from a single image to a long video, the above paradigm encounters difficulty because the vast amount of video tokens has significantly exceeded the maximal capacity of MLLMs. Therefore, existing video-based MLLMs are mostly established upon sampling a small portion of tokens from input data, which can cause key information to be lost and thus produce incorrect answers. This paper presents a simple yet effective algorithm named Adaptive Keyframe Sampling (AKS). It inserts a plug-and-play module known as keyframe selection, which aims to maximize the useful information with a fixed number of video tokens. We formulate keyframe selection as an optimization involving (1) the relevance between the keyframes and the prompt, and (2) the coverage of the keyframes over the video, and present an adaptive algorithm to approximate the best solution. Experiments on two long video understanding benchmarks validate that Adaptive Keyframe Sampling improves video QA accuracy (beyond strong baselines) upon selecting informative keyframes. EPO: Explicit Policy Optimization for Strategic Reasoning in LLMs via Reinforcement LearningXiaoqian Liu, Ke Wang, Yongbin Li et al.
Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown impressive reasoning capabilities in well-defined problems with clear solutions, such as mathematics and coding. However, they still struggle with complex real-world scenarios like business negotiations, which require strategic reasoning-an ability to navigate dynamic environments and align long-term goals amidst uncertainty. Existing methods for strategic reasoning face challenges in adaptability, scalability, and transferring strategies to new contexts. To address these issues, we propose explicit policy optimization (EPO) for strategic reasoning, featuring an LLM that provides strategies in open-ended action space and can be plugged into arbitrary LLM agents to motivate goal-directed behavior. To improve adaptability and policy transferability, we train the strategic reasoning model via multi-turn reinforcement learning (RL),utilizing process rewards and iterative self-play. Experiments across social and physical domains demonstrate EPO's ability of long-term goal alignment through enhanced strategic reasoning, achieving state-of-the-art performance on social dialogue and web navigation tasks. Our findings reveal various collaborative reasoning mechanisms emergent in EPO and its effectiveness in generating novel strategies, underscoring its potential for strategic reasoning in real-world applications. Recent Advances in Attack and Defense Approaches of Large Language ModelsJing Cui, Yishi Xu, Zhewei Huang et al.
Large Language Models (LLMs) have revolutionized artificial intelligence and machine learning through their advanced text processing and generating capabilities. However, their widespread deployment has raised significant safety and reliability concerns. Established vulnerabilities in deep neural networks, coupled with emerging threat models, may compromise security evaluations and create a false sense of security. Given the extensive research in the field of LLM security, we believe that summarizing the current state of affairs will help the research community better understand the present landscape and inform future developments. This paper reviews current research on LLM vulnerabilities and threats, and evaluates the effectiveness of contemporary defense mechanisms. We analyze recent studies on attack vectors and model weaknesses, providing insights into attack mechanisms and the evolving threat landscape. We also examine current defense strategies, highlighting their strengths and limitations. By contrasting advancements in attack and defense methodologies, we identify research gaps and propose future directions to enhance LLM security. Our goal is to advance the understanding of LLM safety challenges and guide the development of more robust security measures.

CPR++: Object Localization via Single Coarse Point SupervisionXuehui Yu, Pengfei Chen, Kuiran Wang et al.
Point-based object localization (POL), which pursues high-performance object sensing under low-cost data annotation, has attracted increased attention. However, the point annotation mode inevitably introduces semantic variance due to the inconsistency of annotated points. Existing POL heavily rely on strict annotation rules, which are difficult to define and apply, to handle the problem. In this study, we propose coarse point refinement (CPR), which to our best knowledge is the first attempt to alleviate semantic variance from an algorithmic perspective. CPR reduces the semantic variance by selecting a semantic centre point in a neighbourhood region to replace the initial annotated point. Furthermore, We design a sampling region estimation module to dynamically compute a sampling region for each object and use a cascaded structure to achieve end-to-end optimization. We further integrate a variance regularization into the structure to concentrate the predicted scores, yielding CPR++. We observe that CPR++ can obtain scale information and further reduce the semantic variance in a global region, thus guaranteeing high-performance object localization. Extensive experiments on four challenging datasets validate the effectiveness of both CPR and CPR++. We hope our work can inspire more research on designing algorithms rather than annotation rules to address the semantic variance problem in POL. HeroGS: Hierarchical Guidance for Robust 3D Gaussian Splatting under Sparse ViewsJiashu Li, Xumeng Han, Zhaoyang Wei et al.
3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has recently emerged as a promising approach in novel view synthesis, combining photorealistic rendering with real-time efficiency. However, its success heavily relies on dense camera coverage; under sparse-view conditions, insufficient supervision leads to irregular Gaussian distributions, characterized by globally sparse coverage, blurred background, and distorted high-frequency areas. To address this, we propose HeroGS, Hierarchical Guidance for Robust 3D Gaussian Splatting, a unified framework that establishes hierarchical guidance across the image, feature, and parameter levels. At the image level, sparse supervision is converted into pseudo-dense guidance, globally regularizing the Gaussian distributions and forming a consistent foundation for subsequent optimization. Building upon this, Feature-Adaptive Densification and Pruning (FADP) at the feature level leverages low-level features to refine high-frequency details and adaptively densifies Gaussians in background regions. The optimized distributions then support Co-Pruned Geometry Consistency (CPG) at parameter level, which guides geometric consistency through parameter freezing and co-pruning, effectively removing inconsistent splats. The hierarchical guidance strategy effectively constrains and optimizes the overall Gaussian distributions, thereby enhancing both structural fidelity and rendering quality. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HeroGS achieves high-fidelity reconstructions and consistently surpasses state-of-the-art baselines under sparse-view conditions.

SAPNet++: Evolving Point-Prompted Instance Segmentation with Semantic and Spatial AwarenessZhaoyang Wei, Xumeng Han, Xuehui Yu et al.
Single-point annotation is increasingly prominent in visual tasks for labeling cost reduction. However, it challenges tasks requiring high precision, such as the point-prompted instance segmentation (PPIS) task, which aims to estimate precise masks using single-point prompts to train a segmentation network. Due to the constraints of point annotations, granularity ambiguity and boundary uncertainty arise the difficulty distinguishing between different levels of detail (eg. whole object vs. parts) and the challenge of precisely delineating object boundaries. Previous works have usually inherited the paradigm of mask generation along with proposal selection to achieve PPIS. However, proposal selection relies solely on category information, failing to resolve the ambiguity of different granularity. Furthermore, mask generators offer only finite discrete solutions that often deviate from actual masks, particularly at boundaries. To address these issues, we propose the Semantic-Aware Point-Prompted Instance Segmentation Network (SAPNet). It integrates Point Distance Guidance and Box Mining Strategy to tackle group and local issues caused by the point's granularity ambiguity. Additionally, we incorporate completeness scores within proposals to add spatial granularity awareness, enhancing multiple instance learning (MIL) in proposal selection termed S-MIL. The Multi-level Affinity Refinement conveys pixel and semantic clues, narrowing boundary uncertainty during mask refinement. These modules culminate in SAPNet++, mitigating point prompt's granularity ambiguity and boundary uncertainty and significantly improving segmentation performance. Extensive experiments on four challenging datasets validate the effectiveness of our methods, highlighting the potential to advance PPIS.

Towards Precise 3D Human Pose Estimation with Multi-Perspective Spatial-Temporal Relational TransformersJianbin Jiao, Xina Cheng, Weijie Chen et al.
3D human pose estimation captures the human joint points in three-dimensional space while keeping the depth information and physical structure. That is essential for applications that require precise pose information, such as human-computer interaction, scene understanding, and rehabilitation training. Due to the challenges in data collection, mainstream datasets of 3D human pose estimation are primarily composed of multi-view video data collected in laboratory environments, which contains rich spatial-temporal correlation information besides the image frame content. Given the remarkable self-attention mechanism of transformers, capable of capturing the spatial-temporal correlation from multi-view video datasets, we propose a multi-stage framework for 3D sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) human pose detection. Firstly, the spatial module represents the human pose feature by intra-image content, while the frame-image relation module extracts temporal relationships and 3D spatial positional relationship features between the multi-perspective images. Secondly, the self-attention mechanism is adopted to eliminate the interference from non-human body parts and reduce computing resources. Our method is evaluated on Human3.6M, a popular 3D human pose detection dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on this dataset. Balancing Understanding and Generation in Discrete Diffusion ModelsYue Liu, Yuzhong Zhao, Zheyong Xie et al.
In discrete generative modeling, two dominant paradigms demonstrate divergent capabilities: Masked Diffusion Language Models (MDLM) excel at semantic understanding and zero-shot generalization, whereas Uniform-noise Diffusion Language Models (UDLM) achieve strong few-step generation quality, yet neither attains balanced performance across both dimensions. To address this, we propose XDLM, which bridges the two paradigms via a stationary noise kernel. XDLM offers two key contributions: (1) it provides a principled theoretical unification of MDLM and UDLM, recovering each paradigm as a special case; and (2) an alleviated memory bottleneck enabled by an algebraic simplification of the posterior probabilities. Experiments demonstrate that XDLM advances the Pareto frontier between understanding capability and generation quality. Quantitatively, XDLM surpasses UDLM by 5.4 points on zero-shot text benchmarks and outperforms MDLM in few-step image generation (FID 54.1 vs. 80.8). When scaled to tune an 8B-parameter large language model, XDLM achieves 15.0 MBPP in just 32 steps, effectively doubling the baseline performance. VER-Bench: Evaluating MLLMs on Reasoning with Fine-Grained Visual EvidenceChenhui Qiang, Zhaoyang Wei, Xumeng Han et al.
With the rapid development of MLLMs, evaluating their visual capabilities has become increasingly crucial. Current benchmarks primarily fall into two main types: basic perception benchmarks, which focus on local details but lack deep reasoning (e.g., "what is in the image?"), and mainstream reasoning benchmarks, which concentrate on prominent image elements but may fail to assess subtle clues requiring intricate analysis. However, profound visual understanding and complex reasoning depend more on interpreting subtle, inconspicuous local details than on perceiving salient, macro-level objects. These details, though occupying minimal image area, often contain richer, more critical information for robust analysis. To bridge this gap, we introduce the VER-Bench, a novel framework to evaluate MLLMs' ability to: 1) identify fine-grained visual clues, often occupying on average just 0.25% of the image area; 2) integrate these clues with world knowledge for complex reasoning. Comprising 374 carefully designed questions across Geospatial, Temporal, Situational, Intent, System State, and Symbolic reasoning, each question in VER-Bench is accompanied by structured evidence: visual clues and question-related reasoning derived from them. VER-Bench reveals current models' limitations in extracting subtle visual evidence and constructing evidence-based arguments, highlighting the need to enhance models's capabilities in fine-grained visual evidence extraction, integration, and reasoning for genuine visual understanding and human-like analysis. DeProPose: Deficiency-Proof 3D Human Pose Estimation via Adaptive Multi-View FusionJianbin Jiao, Xina Cheng, Kailun Yang et al.
3D human pose estimation has wide applications in fields such as intelligent surveillance, motion capture, and virtual reality. However, in real-world scenarios, issues such as occlusion, noise interference, and missing viewpoints can severely affect pose estimation. To address these challenges, we introduce the task of Deficiency-Aware 3D Pose Estimation. Traditional 3D pose estimation methods often rely on multi-stage networks and modular combinations, which can lead to cumulative errors and increased training complexity, making them unable to effectively address deficiency-aware estimation. To this end, we propose DeProPose, a flexible method that simplifies the network architecture to reduce training complexity and avoid information loss in multi-stage designs. Additionally, the model innovatively introduces a multi-view feature fusion mechanism based on relative projection error, which effectively utilizes information from multiple viewpoints and dynamically assigns weights, enabling efficient integration and enhanced robustness to overcome deficiency-aware 3D Pose Estimation challenges. Furthermore, to thoroughly evaluate this end-to-end multi-view 3D human pose estimation model and to advance research on occlusion-related challenges, we have developed a novel 3D human pose estimation dataset, termed the Deficiency-Aware 3D Pose Estimation (DA-3DPE) dataset. This dataset encompasses a wide range of deficiency scenarios, including noise interference, missing viewpoints, and occlusion challenges. Compared to state-of-the-art methods, DeProPose not only excels in addressing the deficiency-aware problem but also shows improvement in conventional scenarios, providing a powerful and user-friendly solution for 3D human pose estimation. ChatterBox: Multi-round Multimodal Referring and GroundingYunjie Tian, Tianren Ma, Lingxi Xie et al.
In this study, we establish a baseline for a new task named multimodal multi-round referring and grounding (MRG), opening up a promising direction for instance-level multimodal dialogues. We present a new benchmark and an efficient vision-language model for this purpose. The new benchmark, named CB-300K, spans challenges including multi-round dialogue, complex spatial relationships among multiple instances, and consistent reasoning, which are beyond those shown in existing benchmarks. The proposed model, named ChatterBox, utilizes a two-branch architecture to collaboratively handle vision and language tasks. By tokenizing instance regions, the language branch acquires the ability to perceive referential information. Meanwhile, ChatterBox feeds a query embedding in the vision branch to a token receiver for visual grounding. A two-stage optimization strategy is devised, making use of both CB-300K and auxiliary external data to improve the model's stability and capacity for instance-level understanding. Experiments show that ChatterBox outperforms existing models in MRG both quantitatively and qualitatively, paving a new path towards multimodal dialogue scenarios with complicated and precise interactions. VMamba: Visual State Space ModelYue Liu, Yunjie Tian, Yuzhong Zhao et al.
Designing computationally efficient network architectures remains an ongoing necessity in computer vision. In this paper, we adapt Mamba, a state-space language model, into VMamba, a vision backbone with linear time complexity. At the core of VMamba is a stack of Visual State-Space (VSS) blocks with the 2D Selective Scan (SS2D) module. By traversing along four scanning routes, SS2D bridges the gap between the ordered nature of 1D selective scan and the non-sequential structure of 2D vision data, which facilitates the collection of contextual information from various sources and perspectives. Based on the VSS blocks, we develop a family of VMamba architectures and accelerate them through a succession of architectural and implementation enhancements. Extensive experiments demonstrate VMamba's promising performance across diverse visual perception tasks, highlighting its superior input scaling efficiency compared to existing benchmark models. Long-tailed Distribution AdaptationZhiliang Peng, Wei Huang, Zonghao Guo et al.
Recognizing images with long-tailed distributions remains a challenging problem while there lacks an interpretable mechanism to solve this problem. In this study, we formulate Long-tailed recognition as Domain Adaption (LDA), by modeling the long-tailed distribution as an unbalanced domain and the general distribution as a balanced domain. Within the balanced domain, we propose to slack the generalization error bound, which is defined upon the empirical risks of unbalanced and balanced domains and the divergence between them. We propose to jointly optimize empirical risks of the unbalanced and balanced domains and approximate their domain divergence by intra-class and inter-class distances, with the aim to adapt models trained on the long-tailed distribution to general distributions in an interpretable way. Experiments on benchmark datasets for image recognition, object detection, and instance segmentation validate that our LDA approach, beyond its interpretability, achieves state-of-the-art performance. GraFormer: Graph Convolution Transformer for 3D Pose EstimationWeixi Zhao, Yunjie Tian, Qixiang Ye et al.
Exploiting relations among 2D joints plays a crucial role yet remains semi-developed in 2D-to-3D pose estimation. To alleviate this issue, we propose GraFormer, a novel transformer architecture combined with graph convolution for 3D pose estimation. The proposed GraFormer comprises two repeatedly stacked core modules, GraAttention and ChebGConv block. GraAttention enables all 2D joints to interact in global receptive field without weakening the graph structure information of joints, which introduces vital features for later modules. Unlike vanilla graph convolutions that only model the apparent relationship of joints, ChebGConv block enables 2D joints to interact in the high-order sphere, which formulates their hidden implicit relations. We empirically show the superiority of GraFormer through conducting extensive experiments across popular benchmarks. Rethinking Sampling Strategies for Unsupervised Person Re-identificationXumeng Han, Xuehui Yu, Guorong Li et al.
Unsupervised person re-identification (re-ID) remains a challenging task. While extensive research has focused on the framework design and loss function, this paper shows that sampling strategy plays an equally important role. We analyze the reasons for the performance differences between various sampling strategies under the same framework and loss function. We suggest that deteriorated over-fitting is an important factor causing poor performance, and enhancing statistical stability can rectify this problem. Inspired by that, a simple yet effective approach is proposed, termed group sampling, which gathers samples from the same class into groups. The model is thereby trained using normalized group samples, which helps alleviate the negative impact of individual samples. Group sampling updates the pipeline of pseudo-label generation by guaranteeing that samples are more efficiently classified into the correct classes. It regulates the representation learning process, enhancing statistical stability for feature representation in a progressive fashion. Extensive experiments on Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID and MSMT17 show that group sampling achieves performance comparable to state-of-the-art methods and outperforms the current techniques under purely camera-agnostic settings. Conformer: Local Features Coupling Global Representations for Visual RecognitionZhiliang Peng, Wei Huang, Shanzhi Gu et al.
Within Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), the convolution operations are good at extracting local features but experience difficulty to capture global representations. Within visual transformer, the cascaded self-attention modules can capture long-distance feature dependencies but unfortunately deteriorate local feature details. In this paper, we propose a hybrid network structure, termed Conformer, to take advantage of convolutional operations and self-attention mechanisms for enhanced representation learning. Conformer roots in the Feature Coupling Unit (FCU), which fuses local features and global representations under different resolutions in an interactive fashion. Conformer adopts a concurrent structure so that local features and global representations are retained to the maximum extent. Experiments show that Conformer, under the comparable parameter complexity, outperforms the visual transformer (DeiT-B) by 2.3% on ImageNet. On MSCOCO, it outperforms ResNet-101 by 3.7% and 3.6% mAPs for object detection and instance segmentation, respectively, demonstrating the great potential to be a general backbone network. Adaptive Linear Span Network for Object Skeleton DetectionChang Liu, Yunjie Tian, Jianbin Jiao et al.
Conventional networks for object skeleton detection are usually hand-crafted. Although effective, they require intensive priori knowledge to configure representative features for objects in different scale granularity.In this paper, we propose adaptive linear span network (AdaLSN), driven by neural architecture search (NAS), to automatically configure and integrate scale-aware features for object skeleton detection. AdaLSN is formulated with the theory of linear span, which provides one of the earliest explanations for multi-scale deep feature fusion. AdaLSN is materialized by defining a mixed unit-pyramid search space, which goes beyond many existing search spaces using unit-level or pyramid-level features.Within the mixed space, we apply genetic architecture search to jointly optimize unit-level operations and pyramid-level connections for adaptive feature space expansion. AdaLSN substantiates its versatility by achieving significantly higher accuracy and latency trade-off compared with state-of-the-arts. It also demonstrates general applicability to image-to-mask tasks such as edge detection and road extraction. SRN: Side-output Residual Network for Object Symmetry Detection in the WildWei Ke, Jie Chen, Jianbin Jiao et al.
In this paper, we establish a baseline for object symmetry detection in complex backgrounds by presenting a new benchmark and an end-to-end deep learning approach, opening up a promising direction for symmetry detection in the wild. The new benchmark, named Sym-PASCAL, spans challenges including object diversity, multi-objects, part-invisibility, and various complex backgrounds that are far beyond those in existing datasets. The proposed symmetry detection approach, named Side-output Residual Network (SRN), leverages output Residual Units (RUs) to fit the errors between the object symmetry groundtruth and the outputs of RUs. By stacking RUs in a deep-to-shallow manner, SRN exploits the 'flow' of errors among multiple scales to ease the problems of fitting complex outputs with limited layers, suppressing the complex backgrounds, and effectively matching object symmetry of different scales. Experimental results validate both the benchmark and its challenging aspects related to realworld images, and the state-of-the-art performance of our symmetry detection approach. Persistent Backdoor Attacks under Continual Fine-Tuning of LLMsJing Cui, Yufei Han, Jianbin Jiao et al.
Backdoor attacks embed malicious behaviors into Large Language Models (LLMs), enabling adversaries to trigger harmful outputs or bypass safety controls. However, the persistence of the implanted backdoors under user-driven post-deployment continual fine-tuning has been rarely examined. Most prior works evaluate the effectiveness and generalization of implanted backdoors only at releasing and empirical evidence shows that naively injected backdoor persistence degrades after updates. In this work, we study whether and how implanted backdoors persist through a multi-stage post-deployment fine-tuning. We propose P-Trojan, a trigger-based attack algorithm that explicitly optimizes for backdoor persistence across repeated updates. By aligning poisoned gradients with those of clean tasks on token embeddings, the implanted backdoor mapping is less likely to be suppressed or forgotten during subsequent updates. Theoretical analysis shows the feasibility of such persistent backdoor attacks after continual fine-tuning. And experiments conducted on the Qwen2.5 and LLaMA3 families of LLMs, as well as diverse task sequences, demonstrate that P-Trojan achieves over 99% persistence while preserving clean-task accuracy. Our findings highlight the need for persistence-aware evaluation and stronger defenses in realistic model adaptation pipelines.

BadRL: Sparse Targeted Backdoor Attack Against Reinforcement LearningJing Cui, Yufei Han, Yuzhe Ma et al.
Backdoor attacks in reinforcement learning (RL) have previously employed intense attack strategies to ensure attack success. However, these methods suffer from high attack costs and increased detectability. In this work, we propose a novel approach, BadRL, which focuses on conducting highly sparse backdoor poisoning efforts during training and testing while maintaining successful attacks. Our algorithm, BadRL, strategically chooses state observations with high attack values to inject triggers during training and testing, thereby reducing the chances of detection. In contrast to the previous methods that utilize sample-agnostic trigger patterns, BadRL dynamically generates distinct trigger patterns based on targeted state observations, thereby enhancing its effectiveness. Theoretical analysis shows that the targeted backdoor attack is always viable and remains stealthy under specific assumptions. Empirical results on various classic RL tasks illustrate that BadRL can substantially degrade the performance of a victim agent with minimal poisoning efforts 0.003% of total training steps) during training and infrequent attacks during testing.

Semantic-aware SAM for Point-Prompted Instance SegmentationZhaoyang Wei, Pengfei Chen, Xuehui Yu et al.
Single-point annotation in visual tasks, with the goal of minimizing labelling costs, is becoming increasingly prominent in research. Recently, visual foundation models, such as Segment Anything (SAM), have gained widespread usage due to their robust zero-shot capabilities and exceptional annotation performance. However, SAM's class-agnostic output and high confidence in local segmentation introduce 'semantic ambiguity', posing a challenge for precise category-specific segmentation. In this paper, we introduce a cost-effective category-specific segmenter using SAM. To tackle this challenge, we have devised a Semantic-Aware Instance Segmentation Network (SAPNet) that integrates Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) with matching capability and SAM with point prompts. SAPNet strategically selects the most representative mask proposals generated by SAM to supervise segmentation, with a specific focus on object category information. Moreover, we introduce the Point Distance Guidance and Box Mining Strategy to mitigate inherent challenges: 'group' and 'local' issues in weakly supervised segmentation. These strategies serve to further enhance the overall segmentation performance. The experimental results on Pascal VOC and COCO demonstrate the promising performance of our proposed SAPNet, emphasizing its semantic matching capabilities and its potential to advance point-prompted instance segmentation. ClickTrack: Towards Real-time Interactive Single Object TrackingKuiran Wang, Xuehui Yu, Wenwen Yu et al.
Single object tracking(SOT) relies on precise object bounding box initialization. In this paper, we reconsidered the deficiencies in the current approaches to initializing single object trackers and propose a new paradigm for single object tracking algorithms, ClickTrack, a new paradigm using clicking interaction for real-time scenarios. Moreover, click as an input type inherently lack hierarchical information. To address ambiguity in certain special scenarios, we designed the Guided Click Refiner(GCR), which accepts point and optional textual information as inputs, transforming the point into the bounding box expected by the operator. The bounding box will be used as input of single object trackers. Experiments on LaSOT and GOT-10k benchmarks show that tracker combined with GCR achieves stable performance in real-time interactive scenarios. Furthermore, we explored the integration of GCR into the Segment Anything model(SAM), significantly reducing ambiguity issues when SAM receives point inputs.

CAGS: Open-Vocabulary 3D Scene Understanding with Context-Aware Gaussian SplattingWei Sun, Yanzhao Zhou, Jianbin Jiao et al.
Open-vocabulary 3D scene understanding is crucial for applications requiring natural language-driven spatial interpretation, such as robotics and augmented reality. While 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) offers a powerful representation for scene reconstruction, integrating it with open-vocabulary frameworks reveals a key challenge: cross-view granularity inconsistency. This issue, stemming from 2D segmentation methods like SAM, results in inconsistent object segmentations across views (e.g., a "coffee set" segmented as a single entity in one view but as "cup + coffee + spoon" in another). Existing 3DGS-based methods often rely on isolated per-Gaussian feature learning, neglecting the spatial context needed for cohesive object reasoning, leading to fragmented representations. We propose Context-Aware Gaussian Splatting (CAGS), a novel framework that addresses this challenge by incorporating spatial context into 3DGS. CAGS constructs local graphs to propagate contextual features across Gaussians, reducing noise from inconsistent granularity, employs mask-centric contrastive learning to smooth SAM-derived features across views, and leverages a precomputation strategy to reduce computational cost by precomputing neighborhood relationships, enabling efficient training in large-scale scenes. By integrating spatial context, CAGS significantly improves 3D instance segmentation and reduces fragmentation errors on datasets like LERF-OVS and ScanNet, enabling robust language-guided 3D scene understanding.

Self-supervised Pretraining for Decision Foundation Model: Formulation, Pipeline and ChallengesXiaoqian Liu, Jianbin Jiao, Junge Zhang
Decision-making is a dynamic process requiring perception, memory, and reasoning to make choices and find optimal policies. Traditional approaches to decision-making suffer from sample efficiency and generalization, while large-scale self-supervised pretraining has enabled fast adaptation with fine-tuning or few-shot learning in language and vision. We thus argue to integrate knowledge acquired from generic large-scale self-supervised pretraining into downstream decision-making problems. We propose Pretrain-Then-Adapt pipeline and survey recent work on data collection, pretraining objectives and adaptation strategies for decision-making pretraining and downstream inference. Finally, we identify critical challenges and future directions for developing decision foundation model with the help of generic and flexible self-supervised pretraining.

P2Object: Single Point Supervised Object Detection and Instance SegmentationPengfei Chen, Xuehui Yu, Xumeng Han et al.
Object recognition using single-point supervision has attracted increasing attention recently. However, the performance gap compared with fully-supervised algorithms remains large. Previous works generated class-agnostic \textbf{\textit{proposals in an image}} offline and then treated mixed candidates as a single bag, putting a huge burden on multiple instance learning (MIL). In this paper, we introduce Point-to-Box Network (P2BNet), which constructs balanced \textbf{\textit{instance-level proposal bags}} by generating proposals in an anchor-like way and refining the proposals in a coarse-to-fine paradigm. Through further research, we find that the bag of proposals, either at the image level or the instance level, is established on discrete box sampling. This leads the pseudo box estimation into a sub-optimal solution, resulting in the truncation of object boundaries or the excessive inclusion of background. Hence, we conduct a series exploration of discrete-to-continuous optimization, yielding P2BNet++ and Point-to-Mask Network (P2MNet). P2BNet++ conducts an approximately continuous proposal sampling strategy by better utilizing spatial clues. P2MNet further introduces low-level image information to assist in pixel prediction, and a boundary self-prediction is designed to relieve the limitation of the estimated boxes. Benefiting from the continuous object-aware \textbf{\textit{pixel-level perception}}, P2MNet can generate more precise bounding boxes and generalize to segmentation tasks. Our method largely surpasses the previous methods in terms of the mean average precision on COCO, VOC, SBD, and Cityscapes, demonstrating great potential to bridge the performance gap compared with fully supervised tasks.

Agentic Reinforcement Learning with Implicit Step RewardsXiaoqian Liu, Ke Wang, Yuchuan Wu et al.
Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly developed as autonomous agents using reinforcement learning (agentic RL) that reason and act in interactive environments. However, sparse and sometimes unverifiable rewards make it extremely challenging to assign credit when training LLM agents that serve as a policy. Recent work attempts to integrate process supervision into RL but suffers from biased annotation, reward hacking, high-variance from overly fine-grained rewards or failtures when state overlap is rare. We therefore introduce implicit step rewards for agentic RL (iStar), a general credit-assignment strategy that integrates seamlessly with standard RL algorithms without relying on additional rollouts or explicit step labels. Particularly, we alternatively optimize an implicit process reward model (PRM) with the policy model to generate implicit step rewards via a trajectory-based DPO objective. Theoretical analysis shows that this learning objective produces a step-wise reward function. Then the implicit step rewards are used to compute step-level advantages, which are combined with trajectory (or episode)-level advantages for policy updates, creating a self-reinforcing training loop. We evaluate our method on three challenging agent benchmarks, including WebShop and VisualSokoban, as well as open-ended social interactions with unverifiable rewards in SOTOPIA. Crucially, iStar shows superior performance over frontier LLMs and strong RL baselines across domains, achieving state-of-the-art results with higher sample-efficiency and training stability. Further analysis also demonstrates efficient exploration by iStar with increased rewards in both step- and episode-level while maintaining fewer steps to achieve task success. P2Seg: Pointly-supervised Segmentation via Mutual DistillationZipeng Wang, Xuehui Yu, Xumeng Han et al.
Point-level Supervised Instance Segmentation (PSIS) aims to enhance the applicability and scalability of instance segmentation by utilizing low-cost yet instance-informative annotations. Existing PSIS methods usually rely on positional information to distinguish objects, but predicting precise boundaries remains challenging due to the lack of contour annotations. Nevertheless, weakly supervised semantic segmentation methods are proficient in utilizing intra-class feature consistency to capture the boundary contours of the same semantic regions. In this paper, we design a Mutual Distillation Module (MDM) to leverage the complementary strengths of both instance position and semantic information and achieve accurate instance-level object perception. The MDM consists of Semantic to Instance (S2I) and Instance to Semantic (I2S). S2I is guided by the precise boundaries of semantic regions to learn the association between annotated points and instance contours. I2S leverages discriminative relationships between instances to facilitate the differentiation of various objects within the semantic map. Extensive experiments substantiate the efficacy of MDM in fostering the synergy between instance and semantic information, consequently improving the quality of instance-level object representations. Our method achieves 55.7 mAP$_{50}$ and 17.6 mAP on the PASCAL VOC and MS COCO datasets, significantly outperforming recent PSIS methods and several box-supervised instance segmentation competitors.

P2P-Loc: Point to Point Tiny Person LocalizationXuehui Yu, Di Wu, Qixiang Ye et al.
Bounding-box annotation form has been the most frequently used method for visual object localization tasks. However, bounding-box annotation relies on a large amount of precisely annotating bounding boxes, and it is expensive and laborious. It is impossible to be employed in practical scenarios and even redundant for some applications (such as tiny person localization) that the size would not matter. Therefore, we propose a novel point-based framework for the person localization task by annotating each person as a coarse point (CoarsePoint) instead of an accurate bounding box that can be any point within the object extent. Then, the network predicts the person's location as a 2D coordinate in the image. Although this greatly simplifies the data annotation pipeline, the CoarsePoint annotation inevitably decreases label reliability (label uncertainty) and causes network confusion during training. As a result, we propose a point self-refinement approach that iteratively updates point annotations in a self-paced way. The proposed refinement system alleviates the label uncertainty and progressively improves localization performance. Experimental results show that our approach has achieved comparable object localization performance while saving up to 80$\%$ of annotation cost.

Exploring Complicated Search Spaces with Interleaving-Free SamplingYunjie Tian, Lingxi Xie, Jiemin Fang et al.
The existing neural architecture search algorithms are mostly working on search spaces with short-distance connections. We argue that such designs, though safe and stable, obstacles the search algorithms from exploring more complicated scenarios. In this paper, we build the search algorithm upon a complicated search space with long-distance connections, and show that existing weight-sharing search algorithms mostly fail due to the existence of \textbf{interleaved connections}. Based on the observation, we present a simple yet effective algorithm named \textbf{IF-NAS}, where we perform a periodic sampling strategy to construct different sub-networks during the search procedure, avoiding the interleaved connections to emerge in any of them. In the proposed search space, IF-NAS outperform both random sampling and previous weight-sharing search algorithms by a significant margin. IF-NAS also generalizes to the micro cell-based spaces which are much easier. Our research emphasizes the importance of macro structure and we look forward to further efforts along this direction.

Self-supervised Feature-Gate Coupling for Dynamic Network PruningMengnan Shi, Chang Liu, Jianbin Jiao et al.
Gating modules have been widely explored in dynamic network pruning to reduce the run-time computational cost of deep neural networks while preserving the representation of features. Despite the substantial progress, existing methods remain ignoring the consistency between feature and gate distributions, which may lead to distortion of gated features. In this paper, we propose a feature-gate coupling (FGC) approach aiming to align distributions of features and gates. FGC is a plug-and-play module, which consists of two steps carried out in an iterative self-supervised manner. In the first step, FGC utilizes the $k$-Nearest Neighbor method in the feature space to explore instance neighborhood relationships, which are treated as self-supervisory signals. In the second step, FGC exploits contrastive learning to regularize gating modules with generated self-supervisory signals, leading to the alignment of instance neighborhood relationships within the feature and gate spaces. Experimental results validate that the proposed FGC method improves the baseline approach with significant margins, outperforming the state-of-the-arts with better accuracy-computation trade-off. Semantic-Aware Generation for Self-Supervised Visual Representation LearningYunjie Tian, Lingxi Xie, Xiaopeng Zhang et al.
In this paper, we propose a self-supervised visual representation learning approach which involves both generative and discriminative proxies, where we focus on the former part by requiring the target network to recover the original image based on the mid-level features. Different from prior work that mostly focuses on pixel-level similarity between the original and generated images, we advocate for Semantic-aware Generation (SaGe) to facilitate richer semantics rather than details to be preserved in the generated image. The core idea of implementing SaGe is to use an evaluator, a deep network that is pre-trained without labels, for extracting semantic-aware features. SaGe complements the target network with view-specific features and thus alleviates the semantic degradation brought by intensive data augmentations. We execute SaGe on ImageNet-1K and evaluate the pre-trained models on five downstream tasks including nearest neighbor test, linear classification, and fine-scaled image recognition, demonstrating its ability to learn stronger visual representations.

Anti-aliasing Semantic Reconstruction for Few-Shot Semantic SegmentationBinghao Liu, Yao Ding, Jianbin Jiao et al.
Encouraging progress in few-shot semantic segmentation has been made by leveraging features learned upon base classes with sufficient training data to represent novel classes with few-shot examples. However, this feature sharing mechanism inevitably causes semantic aliasing between novel classes when they have similar compositions of semantic concepts. In this paper, we reformulate few-shot segmentation as a semantic reconstruction problem, and convert base class features into a series of basis vectors which span a class-level semantic space for novel class reconstruction. By introducing contrastive loss, we maximize the orthogonality of basis vectors while minimizing semantic aliasing between classes. Within the reconstructed representation space, we further suppress interference from other classes by projecting query features to the support vector for precise semantic activation. Our proposed approach, referred to as anti-aliasing semantic reconstruction (ASR), provides a systematic yet interpretable solution for few-shot learning problems. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC and MS COCO datasets show that ASR achieves strong results compared with the prior works.

Few-shot segmentation is challenging because objects within the support and query images could significantly differ in appearance and pose. Using a single prototype acquired directly from the support image to segment the query image causes semantic ambiguity. In this paper, we propose prototype mixture models (PMMs), which correlate diverse image regions with multiple prototypes to enforce the prototype-based semantic representation. Estimated by an Expectation-Maximization algorithm, PMMs incorporate rich channel-wised and spatial semantics from limited support images. Utilized as representations as well as classifiers, PMMs fully leverage the semantics to activate objects in the query image while depressing background regions in a duplex manner. Extensive experiments on Pascal VOC and MS-COCO datasets show that PMMs significantly improve upon state-of-the-arts. Particularly, PMMs improve 5-shot segmentation performance on MS-COCO by up to 5.82\% with only a moderate cost for model size and inference speed.

Discretization-Aware Architecture SearchYunjie Tian, Chang Liu, Lingxi Xie et al.
The search cost of neural architecture search (NAS) has been largely reduced by weight-sharing methods. These methods optimize a super-network with all possible edges and operations, and determine the optimal sub-network by discretization, \textit{i.e.}, pruning off weak candidates. The discretization process, performed on either operations or edges, incurs significant inaccuracy and thus the quality of the final architecture is not guaranteed. This paper presents discretization-aware architecture search (DA\textsuperscript{2}S), with the core idea being adding a loss term to push the super-network towards the configuration of desired topology, so that the accuracy loss brought by discretization is largely alleviated. Experiments on standard image classification benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our approach, in particular, under imbalanced target network configurations that were not studied before.

Vision-Dialog Navigation by Exploring Cross-modal MemoryYi Zhu, Fengda Zhu, Zhaohuan Zhan et al.
Vision-dialog navigation posed as a new holy-grail task in vision-language disciplinary targets at learning an agent endowed with the capability of constant conversation for help with natural language and navigating according to human responses. Besides the common challenges faced in visual language navigation, vision-dialog navigation also requires to handle well with the language intentions of a series of questions about the temporal context from dialogue history and co-reasoning both dialogs and visual scenes. In this paper, we propose the Cross-modal Memory Network (CMN) for remembering and understanding the rich information relevant to historical navigation actions. Our CMN consists of two memory modules, the language memory module (L-mem) and the visual memory module (V-mem). Specifically, L-mem learns latent relationships between the current language interaction and a dialog history by employing a multi-head attention mechanism. V-mem learns to associate the current visual views and the cross-modal memory about the previous navigation actions. The cross-modal memory is generated via a vision-to-language attention and a language-to-vision attention. Benefiting from the collaborative learning of the L-mem and the V-mem, our CMN is able to explore the memory about the decision making of historical navigation actions which is for the current step. Experiments on the CVDN dataset show that our CMN outperforms the previous state-of-the-art model by a significant margin on both seen and unseen environments.

C-MIL: Continuation Multiple Instance Learning for Weakly Supervised Object DetectionFang Wan, Chang Liu, Wei Ke et al.
Weakly supervised object detection (WSOD) is a challenging task when provided with image category supervision but required to simultaneously learn object locations and object detectors. Many WSOD approaches adopt multiple instance learning (MIL) and have non-convex loss functions which are prone to get stuck into local minima (falsely localize object parts) while missing full object extent during training. In this paper, we introduce a continuation optimization method into MIL and thereby creating continuation multiple instance learning (C-MIL), with the intention of alleviating the non-convexity problem in a systematic way. We partition instances into spatially related and class related subsets, and approximate the original loss function with a series of smoothed loss functions defined within the subsets. Optimizing smoothed loss functions prevents the training procedure falling prematurely into local minima and facilitates the discovery of Stable Semantic Extremal Regions (SSERs) which indicate full object extent. On the PASCAL VOC 2007 and 2012 datasets, C-MIL improves the state-of-the-art of weakly supervised object detection and weakly supervised object localization with large margins.

Min-Entropy Latent Model for Weakly Supervised Object DetectionFang Wan, Pengxu Wei, Zhenjun Han et al.
Weakly supervised object detection is a challenging task when provided with image category supervision but required to learn, at the same time, object locations and object detectors. The inconsistency between the weak supervision and learning objectives introduces significant randomness to object locations and ambiguity to detectors. In this paper, a min-entropy latent model (MELM) is proposed for weakly supervised object detection. Min-entropy serves as a model to learn object locations and a metric to measure the randomness of object localization during learning. It aims to principally reduce the variance of learned instances and alleviate the ambiguity of detectors. MELM is decomposed into three components including proposal clique partition, object clique discovery, and object localization. MELM is optimized with a recurrent learning algorithm, which leverages continuation optimization to solve the challenging non-convexity problem. Experiments demonstrate that MELM significantly improves the performance of weakly supervised object detection, weakly supervised object localization, and image classification, against the state-of-the-art approaches.

SIXray : A Large-scale Security Inspection X-ray Benchmark for Prohibited Item Discovery in Overlapping ImagesCaijing Miao, Lingxi Xie, Fang Wan et al.
In this paper, we present a large-scale dataset and establish a baseline for prohibited item discovery in Security Inspection X-ray images. Our dataset, named SIXray, consists of 1,059,231 X-ray images, in which 6 classes of 8,929 prohibited items are manually annotated. It raises a brand new challenge of overlapping image data, meanwhile shares the same properties with existing datasets, including complex yet meaningless contexts and class imbalance. We propose an approach named class-balanced hierarchical refinement (CHR) to deal with these difficulties. CHR assumes that each input image is sampled from a mixture distribution, and that deep networks require an iterative process to infer image contents accurately. To accelerate, we insert reversed connections to different network backbones, delivering high-level visual cues to assist mid-level features. In addition, a class-balanced loss function is designed to maximally alleviate the noise introduced by easy negative samples. We evaluate CHR on SIXray with different ratios of positive/negative samples. Compared to the baselines, CHR enjoys a better ability of discriminating objects especially using mid-level features, which offers the possibility of using a weakly-supervised approach towards accurate object localization. In particular, the advantage of CHR is more significant in the scenarios with fewer positive training samples, which demonstrates its potential application in real-world security inspection.

Deep domain adaptation methods can reduce the distribution discrepancy by learning domain-invariant embedddings. However, these methods only focus on aligning the whole data distributions, without considering the class-level relations among source and target images. Thus, a target embeddings of a bird might be aligned to source embeddings of an airplane. This semantic misalignment can directly degrade the classifier performance on the target dataset. To alleviate this problem, we present a similarity constrained alignment (SCA) method for unsupervised domain adaptation. When aligning the distributions in the embedding space, SCA enforces a similarity-preserving constraint to maintain class-level relations among the source and target images, i.e., if a source image and a target image are of the same class label, their corresponding embeddings are supposed to be aligned nearby, and vise versa. In the absence of target labels, we assign pseudo labels for target images. Given labeled source images and pseudo-labeled target images, the similarity-preserving constraint can be implemented by minimizing the triplet loss. With the joint supervision of domain alignment loss and similarity-preserving constraint, we train a network to obtain domain-invariant embeddings with two critical characteristics, intra-class compactness and inter-class separability. Extensive experiments conducted on the two datasets well demonstrate the effectiveness of SCA.

Similarity-preserving Image-image Domain Adaptation for Person Re-identificationWeijian Deng, Liang Zheng, Qixiang Ye et al.
This article studies the domain adaptation problem in person re-identification (re-ID) under a "learning via translation" framework, consisting of two components, 1) translating the labeled images from the source to the target domain in an unsupervised manner, 2) learning a re-ID model using the translated images. The objective is to preserve the underlying human identity information after image translation, so that translated images with labels are effective for feature learning on the target domain. To this end, we propose a similarity preserving generative adversarial network (SPGAN) and its end-to-end trainable version, eSPGAN. Both aiming at similarity preserving, SPGAN enforces this property by heuristic constraints, while eSPGAN does so by optimally facilitating the re-ID model learning. More specifically, SPGAN separately undertakes the two components in the "learning via translation" framework. It first preserves two types of unsupervised similarity, namely, self-similarity of an image before and after translation, and domain-dissimilarity of a translated source image and a target image. It then learns a re-ID model using existing networks. In comparison, eSPGAN seamlessly integrates image translation and re-ID model learning. During the end-to-end training of eSPGAN, re-ID learning guides image translation to preserve the underlying identity information of an image. Meanwhile, image translation improves re-ID learning by providing identity-preserving training samples of the target domain style. In the experiment, we show that identities of the fake images generated by SPGAN and eSPGAN are well preserved. Based on this, we report the new state-of-the-art domain adaptation results on two large-scale person re-ID datasets.

SRN: Side-output Residual Network for Object Reflection Symmetry Detection and BeyondWei Ke, Jie Chen, Jianbin Jiao et al.
In this paper, we establish a baseline for object reflection symmetry detection in complex backgrounds by presenting a new benchmark and an end-to-end deep learning approach, opening up a promising direction for symmetry detection in the wild. The new benchmark, Sym-PASCAL, spans challenges including object diversity, multi-objects, part-invisibility, and various complex backgrounds that are far beyond those in existing datasets. The end-to-end deep learning approach, referred to as a side-output residual network (SRN), leverages the output residual units (RUs) to fit the errors between the object ground-truth symmetry and the side-outputs of multiple stages. By cascading RUs in a deep-to-shallow manner, SRN exploits the 'flow' of errors among multiple stages to address the challenges of fitting complex output with limited convolutional layers, suppressing the complex backgrounds, and effectively matching object symmetry at different scales. SRN is further upgraded to a multi-task side-output residual network (MT-SRN) for joint symmetry and edge detection, demonstrating its generality to image-to-mask learning tasks. Experimental results validate both the challenging aspects of Sym-PASCAL benchmark related to real-world images and the state-of-the-art performance of the proposed SRN approach.
