Pik-Fix: Restoring and Colorizing Old PhotosRunsheng Xu, Zhengzhong Tu, Yuanqi Du et al.
Restoring and inpainting the visual memories that are present, but often impaired, in old photos remains an intriguing but unsolved research topic. Decades-old photos often suffer from severe and commingled degradation such as cracks, defocus, and color-fading, which are difficult to treat individually and harder to repair when they interact. Deep learning presents a plausible avenue, but the lack of large-scale datasets of old photos makes addressing this restoration task very challenging. Here we present a novel reference-based end-to-end learning framework that is able to both repair and colorize old, degraded pictures. Our proposed framework consists of three modules: a restoration sub-network that conducts restoration from degradations, a similarity network that performs color histogram matching and color transfer, and a colorization subnet that learns to predict the chroma elements of images conditioned on chromatic reference signals. The overall system makes uses of color histogram priors from reference images, which greatly reduces the need for large-scale training data. We have also created a first-of-a-kind public dataset of real old photos that are paired with ground truth ''pristine'' photos that have been manually restored by PhotoShop experts. We conducted extensive experiments on this dataset and synthetic datasets, and found that our method significantly outperforms previous state-of-the-art models using both qualitative comparisons and quantitative measurements. Understanding Dark Scenes by Contrasting Multi-Modal ObservationsXiaoyu Dong, Naoto Yokoya
Understanding dark scenes based on multi-modal image data is challenging, as both the visible and auxiliary modalities provide limited semantic information for the task. Previous methods focus on fusing the two modalities but neglect the correlations among semantic classes when minimizing losses to align pixels with labels, resulting in inaccurate class predictions. To address these issues, we introduce a supervised multi-modal contrastive learning approach to increase the semantic discriminability of the learned multi-modal feature spaces by jointly performing cross-modal and intra-modal contrast under the supervision of the class correlations. The cross-modal contrast encourages same-class embeddings from across the two modalities to be closer and pushes different-class ones apart. The intra-modal contrast forces same-class or different-class embeddings within each modality to be together or apart. We validate our approach on a variety of tasks that cover diverse light conditions and image modalities. Experiments show that our approach can effectively enhance dark scene understanding based on multi-modal images with limited semantics by shaping semantic-discriminative feature spaces. V2V4Real: A Real-world Large-scale Dataset for Vehicle-to-Vehicle Cooperative PerceptionRunsheng Xu, Xin Xia, Jinlong Li et al.
Modern perception systems of autonomous vehicles are known to be sensitive to occlusions and lack the capability of long perceiving range. It has been one of the key bottlenecks that prevents Level 5 autonomy. Recent research has demonstrated that the Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) cooperative perception system has great potential to revolutionize the autonomous driving industry. However, the lack of a real-world dataset hinders the progress of this field. To facilitate the development of cooperative perception, we present V2V4Real, the first large-scale real-world multi-modal dataset for V2V perception. The data is collected by two vehicles equipped with multi-modal sensors driving together through diverse scenarios. Our V2V4Real dataset covers a driving area of 410 km, comprising 20K LiDAR frames, 40K RGB frames, 240K annotated 3D bounding boxes for 5 classes, and HDMaps that cover all the driving routes. V2V4Real introduces three perception tasks, including cooperative 3D object detection, cooperative 3D object tracking, and Sim2Real domain adaptation for cooperative perception. MUSE: Benchmarking Manufacturable, Functional, and Assemblable Text-to-CAD GenerationXiaoyu Dong, Zhi Li, Xiao-Ming Wu
Large language models (LLMs) have recently advanced text-driven 3D generation, yet Text-to-CAD remains far from supporting industrial product design. Existing benchmarks focus primarily on generating single-part CAD models and evaluate them using geometric similarity metrics that fail to capture functionality, manufacturability, and assemblability. To address this gap, we introduce MUSE, a Text-to-CAD benchmark focused on complex, editable boundary representation (B-Rep) assemblies. MUSE pairs practical design instances with structured Design Specifications and evaluates generated models through a three-stage protocol: code check, geometric check, and design-intent alignment. The final stage uses design-specific rubrics to assess functionality, manufacturability, and assemblability, moving beyond shape matching toward practical design quality. To enable scalable evaluation, we use a rubric-based visual language model (VLM) judge and validate its reliability through human annotation. Experiments on closed-source and open-source LLMs reveal a clear failure cascade from executable code to valid geometry and finally to engineering-ready design, with even the strongest models achieving limited success on fine-grained engineering criteria. Together, MUSE provides a realistic benchmark and evaluation framework for advancing Text-to-CAD from geometric generation toward true engineering design. Learning Mutual Modulation for Self-Supervised Cross-Modal Super-ResolutionXiaoyu Dong, Naoto Yokoya, Longguang Wang et al.
Self-supervised cross-modal super-resolution (SR) can overcome the difficulty of acquiring paired training data, but is challenging because only low-resolution (LR) source and high-resolution (HR) guide images from different modalities are available. Existing methods utilize pseudo or weak supervision in LR space and thus deliver results that are blurry or not faithful to the source modality. To address this issue, we present a mutual modulation SR (MMSR) model, which tackles the task by a mutual modulation strategy, including a source-to-guide modulation and a guide-to-source modulation. In these modulations, we develop cross-domain adaptive filters to fully exploit cross-modal spatial dependency and help induce the source to emulate the resolution of the guide and induce the guide to mimic the modality characteristics of the source. Moreover, we adopt a cycle consistency constraint to train MMSR in a fully self-supervised manner. Experiments on various tasks demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance of our MMSR.

Optimal Embedding Dimension for Sparse Subspace EmbeddingsShabarish Chenakkod, Michał Dereziński, Xiaoyu Dong et al.
A random $m\times n$ matrix $S$ is an oblivious subspace embedding (OSE) with parameters $ε>0$, $δ\in(0,1/3)$ and $d\leq m\leq n$, if for any $d$-dimensional subspace $W\subseteq R^n$, $P\big(\,\forall_{x\in W}\ (1+ε)^{-1}\|x\|\leq\|Sx\|\leq (1+ε)\|x\|\,\big)\geq 1-δ.$ It is known that the embedding dimension of an OSE must satisfy $m\geq d$, and for any $θ> 0$, a Gaussian embedding matrix with $m\geq (1+θ) d$ is an OSE with $ε= O_θ(1)$. However, such optimal embedding dimension is not known for other embeddings. Of particular interest are sparse OSEs, having $s\ll m$ non-zeros per column, with applications to problems such as least squares regression and low-rank approximation. We show that, given any $θ> 0$, an $m\times n$ random matrix $S$ with $m\geq (1+θ)d$ consisting of randomly sparsified $\pm1/\sqrt s$ entries and having $s= O(\log^4(d))$ non-zeros per column, is an oblivious subspace embedding with $ε= O_θ(1)$. Our result addresses the main open question posed by Nelson and Nguyen (FOCS 2013), who conjectured that sparse OSEs can achieve $m=O(d)$ embedding dimension, and it improves on $m=O(d\log(d))$ shown by Cohen (SODA 2016). We use this to construct the first oblivious subspace embedding with $O(d)$ embedding dimension that can be applied faster than current matrix multiplication time, and to obtain an optimal single-pass algorithm for least squares regression. We further extend our results to Leverage Score Sparsification (LESS), which is a recently introduced non-oblivious embedding technique. We use LESS to construct the first subspace embedding with low distortion $ε=o(1)$ and optimal embedding dimension $m=O(d/ε^2)$ that can be applied in current matrix multiplication time.

AI Can Be Cognitively Biased: An Exploratory Study on Threshold Priming in LLM-Based Batch Relevance AssessmentNuo Chen, Jiqun Liu, Xiaoyu Dong et al.
Cognitive biases are systematic deviations in thinking that lead to irrational judgments and problematic decision-making, extensively studied across various fields. Recently, large language models (LLMs) have shown advanced understanding capabilities but may inherit human biases from their training data. While social biases in LLMs have been well-studied, cognitive biases have received less attention, with existing research focusing on specific scenarios. The broader impact of cognitive biases on LLMs in various decision-making contexts remains underexplored. We investigated whether LLMs are influenced by the threshold priming effect in relevance judgments, a core task and widely-discussed research topic in the Information Retrieval (IR) coummunity. The priming effect occurs when exposure to certain stimuli unconsciously affects subsequent behavior and decisions. Our experiment employed 10 topics from the TREC 2019 Deep Learning passage track collection, and tested AI judgments under different document relevance scores, batch lengths, and LLM models, including GPT-3.5, GPT-4, LLaMa2-13B and LLaMa2-70B. Results showed that LLMs tend to give lower scores to later documents if earlier ones have high relevance, and vice versa, regardless of the combination and model used. Our finding demonstrates that LLM%u2019s judgments, similar to human judgments, are also influenced by threshold priming biases, and suggests that researchers and system engineers should take into account potential human-like cognitive biases in designing, evaluating, and auditing LLMs in IR tasks and beyond.

How does Gauge Cooling Stabilize Complex Langevin?Zhenning Cai, Yana Di, Xiaoyu Dong
We study the mechanism of the gauge cooling technique to stabilize the complex Langevin method in the one-dimensional periodic setting. In this case, we find the exact solutions for the gauge transform which minimizes the Frobenius norm of link variables. Thereby, we derive the underlying stochastic differential equations by continuing the numerical method with gauge cooling, and thus provide a number of insights on the effects of gauge cooling. A specific case study is carried out for the Polyakov loop model in $SU(2)$ theory, in which we show that the gauge cooling may help form a localized distribution to guarantee there is no excursion too far away from the real axis.

Continual Dialogue State Tracking via Reason-of-Select DistillationYujie Feng, Bo Liu, Xiaoyu Dong et al.
An ideal dialogue system requires continuous skill acquisition and adaptation to new tasks while retaining prior knowledge. Dialogue State Tracking (DST), vital in these systems, often involves learning new services and confronting catastrophic forgetting, along with a critical capability loss termed the "Value Selection Quandary." To address these challenges, we introduce the Reason-of-Select (RoS) distillation method by enhancing smaller models with a novel 'meta-reasoning' capability. Meta-reasoning employs an enhanced multi-domain perspective, combining fragments of meta-knowledge from domain-specific dialogues during continual learning. This transcends traditional single-perspective reasoning. The domain bootstrapping process enhances the model's ability to dissect intricate dialogues from multiple possible values. Its domain-agnostic property aligns data distribution across different domains, effectively mitigating forgetting. Additionally, two novel improvements, "multi-value resolution" strategy and Semantic Contrastive Reasoning Selection method, significantly enhance RoS by generating DST-specific selection chains and mitigating hallucinations in teachers' reasoning, ensuring effective and reliable knowledge transfer. Extensive experiments validate the exceptional performance and robust generalization capabilities of our method. The source code is provided for reproducibility.

Robust Self-Supervised Cross-Modal Super-Resolution against Real-World Misaligned ObservationsXiaoyu Dong, Jiahuan Li, Ziteng Cui et al.
We study cross-modal super-resolution (SR) on real-world misaligned data, where only a limited number of low-resolution (LR) source and high-resolution (HR) guide image pairs with complex spatial misalignments are available. To address this challenge, we propose RobSelf--a fully self-supervised model that is optimized online, requiring no training data, ground-truth supervision, or pre-alignment. RobSelf features two key techniques: a misalignment-aware feature translator and a content-aware reference filter. The translator reformulates unsupervised cross-modal and cross-resolution alignment as a weakly-supervised, misalignment-aware translation subtask, producing an aligned guide feature with inherent redundancy. Guided by this feature, the filter performs reference-based discriminative self-enhancement on the source, enabling SR predictions with high resolution and high fidelity. Across a variety of tasks, we demonstrate that RobSelf achieves state-of-the-art performance and superior efficiency. Unsupervised Degradation Representation Learning for Blind Super-ResolutionLongguang Wang, Yingqian Wang, Xiaoyu Dong et al.
Most existing CNN-based super-resolution (SR) methods are developed based on an assumption that the degradation is fixed and known (e.g., bicubic downsampling). However, these methods suffer a severe performance drop when the real degradation is different from their assumption. To handle various unknown degradations in real-world applications, previous methods rely on degradation estimation to reconstruct the SR image. Nevertheless, degradation estimation methods are usually time-consuming and may lead to SR failure due to large estimation errors. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised degradation representation learning scheme for blind SR without explicit degradation estimation. Specifically, we learn abstract representations to distinguish various degradations in the representation space rather than explicit estimation in the pixel space. Moreover, we introduce a Degradation-Aware SR (DASR) network with flexible adaption to various degradations based on the learned representations. It is demonstrated that our degradation representation learning scheme can extract discriminative representations to obtain accurate degradation information. Exploring Sparsity in Image Super-Resolution for Efficient InferenceLongguang Wang, Xiaoyu Dong, Yingqian Wang et al.
Current CNN-based super-resolution (SR) methods process all locations equally with computational resources being uniformly assigned in space. However, since missing details in low-resolution (LR) images mainly exist in regions of edges and textures, less computational resources are required for those flat regions. Therefore, existing CNN-based methods involve redundant computation in flat regions, which increases their computational cost and limits their applications on mobile devices. In this paper, we explore the sparsity in image SR to improve inference efficiency of SR networks. Specifically, we develop a Sparse Mask SR (SMSR) network to learn sparse masks to prune redundant computation. Within our SMSR, spatial masks learn to identify "important" regions while channel masks learn to mark redundant channels in those "unimportant" regions. Consequently, redundant computation can be accurately localized and skipped while maintaining comparable performance. It is demonstrated that our SMSR achieves state-of-the-art performance with 41%/33%/27% FLOPs being reduced for x2/3/4 SR. Code is available at: https://github.com/LongguangWang/SMSR.

Well-Conditioned Oblivious Perturbations in Linear SpaceShabarish Chenakkod, Michał Dereziński, Xiaoyu Dong et al.
Perturbing a deterministic $n$-dimensional matrix with small Gaussian noise is a cornerstone of smoothed analysis of algorithms [Spielman and Teng, JACM 2004], as it reduces the condition number of the input to $O(n)$, and with it the complexity of many matrix algorithms. However, when deployed algorithmically, these perturbations are expensive due to the cost of generating and storing $n^2$ Gaussian random variables. We propose a perturbation that requires generating and storing $O(n)$ random numbers in $O(\log n)$ bits of precision, and reduces the condition number of any deterministic matrix to $O(n)$, matching Gaussian perturbations. Our result in particular implies a better complexity for the perturbed conjugate gradient algorithm, showing that we can solve an $n\times n$ linear system in linear space to within an arbitrarily small constant backward error using $O(n)$ matrix-vector products. In our construction, we introduce the concept of a pattern matrix, which is a dense deterministic matrix that maps all sparse vectors into dense vectors, and we combine it with a sparse perturbation whose entries are dependent and located in a non-uniform fashion. In order to analyze this construction, we develop new techniques for lower bounding the smallest singular value of a random matrix with dependent entries.

Understanding Layer Significance in LLM AlignmentGuangyuan Shi, Zexin Lu, Xiaoyu Dong et al.
Aligning large language models (LLMs) through supervised fine-tuning is essential for tailoring them to specific applications. Recent studies suggest that alignment primarily adjusts a model's presentation style rather than its foundational knowledge, indicating that only certain components of the model are significantly impacted. To uncover how alignment affects model behavior at a granular level, we propose identifying which layers within LLMs are most critical to the alignment process. Our approach, named ILA, involves learning a binary mask for the parameter changes in each layer during alignment, as an indicator of layer significance. Experimental results reveal that, despite substantial differences in alignment datasets, the important layers of a model identified by ILA exhibit nearly 90\% overlap, highlighting fundamental patterns in LLM alignment. The results also indicate that freezing non-essential layers improves overall model performance, while selectively tuning the most critical layers significantly enhances fine-tuning efficiency with minimal performance loss. Finally, we discuss how these findings extend from LLM alignment to reasoning.

Last-Iterate Convergence of Randomized Kaczmarz and SGD with Greedy Step SizeMichał Dereziński, Xiaoyu Dong
We study last-iterate convergence of SGD with greedy step size over smooth quadratics in the interpolation regime, a setting which captures the classical Randomized Kaczmarz algorithm as well as other popular iterative linear system solvers. For these methods, we show that the $t$-th iterate attains an $O(1/t^{3/4})$ convergence rate, addressing a question posed by Attia, Schliserman, Sherman, and Koren, who gave an $O(1/t^{1/2})$ guarantee for this setting. In the proof, we introduce the family of stochastic contraction processes, whose behavior can be described by the evolution of a certain deterministic eigenvalue equation, which we analyze via a careful discrete-to-continuous reduction.

GEMeX: A Large-Scale, Groundable, and Explainable Medical VQA Benchmark for Chest X-ray DiagnosisBo Liu, Ke Zou, Liming Zhan et al.
Medical Visual Question Answering (Med-VQA) combines computer vision and natural language processing to automatically answer clinical inquiries about medical images. However, current Med-VQA datasets exhibit two significant limitations: (1) they often lack visual and textual explanations for answers, hindering comprehension for patients and junior doctors; (2) they typically offer a narrow range of question formats, inadequately reflecting the diverse requirements in practical scenarios. These limitations pose significant challenges to the development of a reliable and user-friendly Med-VQA system. To address these challenges, we introduce a large-scale, Groundable, and Explainable Medical VQA benchmark for chest X-ray diagnosis (GEMeX), featuring several innovative components: (1) a multi-modal explainability mechanism that offers detailed visual and textual explanations for each question-answer pair, thereby enhancing answer comprehensibility; (2) four question types, open-ended, closed-ended, single-choice, and multiple-choice, to better reflect practical needs. With 151,025 images and 1,605,575 questions, GEMeX is the currently largest chest X-ray VQA dataset. Evaluation of 12 representative large vision language models (LVLMs) on GEMeX reveals suboptimal performance, underscoring the dataset's complexity. Meanwhile, we propose a strong model by fine-tuning an existing LVLM on the GEMeX training set. The substantial performance improvement showcases the dataset's effectiveness. Optimal Oblivious Subspace Embeddings with Near-optimal SparsityShabarish Chenakkod, Michał Dereziński, Xiaoyu Dong
An oblivious subspace embedding is a random $m\times n$ matrix $Π$ such that, for any $d$-dimensional subspace, with high probability $Π$ preserves the norms of all vectors in that subspace within a $1\pmε$ factor. In this work, we give an oblivious subspace embedding with the optimal dimension $m=Θ(d/ε^2)$ that has a near-optimal sparsity of $\tilde O(1/ε)$ non-zero entries per column of $Π$. This is the first result to nearly match the conjecture of Nelson and Nguyen [FOCS 2013] in terms of the best sparsity attainable by an optimal oblivious subspace embedding, improving on a prior bound of $\tilde O(1/ε^6)$ non-zeros per column [Chenakkod et al., STOC 2024]. We further extend our approach to the non-oblivious setting, proposing a new family of Leverage Score Sparsified embeddings with Independent Columns, which yield faster runtimes for matrix approximation and regression tasks. In our analysis, we develop a new method which uses a decoupling argument together with the cumulant method for bounding the edge universality error of isotropic random matrices. To achieve near-optimal sparsity, we combine this general-purpose approach with new traces inequalities that leverage the specific structure of our subspace embedding construction.

We give a proof of the conjecture of Nelson and Nguyen [FOCS 2013] on the optimal dimension and sparsity of oblivious subspace embeddings, up to sub-polylogarithmic factors: For any $n\geq d$ and $ε\geq d^{-O(1)}$, there is a random $\tilde O(d/ε^2)\times n$ matrix $Π$ with $\tilde O(\log(d)/ε)$ non-zeros per column such that for any $A\in\mathbb{R}^{n\times d}$, with high probability, $(1-ε)\|Ax\|\leq\|ΠAx\|\leq(1+ε)\|Ax\|$ for all $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$, where $\tilde O(\cdot)$ hides only sub-polylogarithmic factors in $d$. Our result in particular implies a new fastest sub-current matrix multiplication time reduction of size $\tilde O(d/ε^2)$ for a broad class of $n\times d$ linear regression tasks. A key novelty in our analysis is a matrix concentration technique we call iterative decoupling, which we use to fine-tune the higher-order trace moment bounds attainable via existing random matrix universality tools [Brailovskaya and van Handel, GAFA 2024].

Unifying Color and Lightness Correction with View-Adaptive Curve Adjustment for Robust 3D Novel View SynthesisZiteng Cui, Shuhong Liu, Xiaoyu Dong et al.
High-quality image acquisition in real-world environments remains challenging due to complex illumination variations and inherent limitations of camera imaging pipelines. These issues are exacerbated in multi-view capture, where differences in lighting, sensor responses, and image signal processor (ISP) configurations introduce photometric and chromatic inconsistencies that violate the assumptions of photometric consistency underlying modern 3D novel view synthesis (NVS) methods, including Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), leading to degraded reconstruction and rendering quality. We propose Luminance-GS++, a 3DGS-based framework for robust NVS under diverse illumination conditions. Our method combines a globally view-adaptive lightness adjustment with a local pixel-wise residual refinement for precise color correction. We further design unsupervised objectives that jointly enforce lightness correction and multi-view geometric and photometric consistency. Extensive experiments demonstrate state-of-the-art performance across challenging scenarios, including low-light, overexposure, and complex luminance and chromatic variations. Unlike prior approaches that modify the underlying representation, our method preserves the explicit 3DGS formulation, improving reconstruction fidelity while maintaining real-time rendering efficiency.

Enhancing 3D LiDAR Segmentation by Shaping Dense and Accurate 2D Semantic PredictionsXiaoyu Dong, Tiankui Xian, Wanshui Gan et al.
Semantic segmentation of 3D LiDAR point clouds is important in urban remote sensing for understanding real-world street environments. This task, by projecting LiDAR point clouds and 3D semantic labels as sparse maps, can be reformulated as a 2D problem. However, the intrinsic sparsity of the projected LiDAR and label maps can result in sparse and inaccurate intermediate 2D semantic predictions, which in return limits the final 3D accuracy. To address this issue, we enhance this task by shaping dense and accurate 2D predictions. Specifically, we develop a multi-modal segmentation model, MM2D3D. By leveraging camera images as auxiliary data, we introduce cross-modal guided filtering to overcome label map sparsity by constraining intermediate 2D semantic predictions with dense semantic relations derived from the camera images; and we introduce dynamic cross pseudo supervision to overcome LiDAR map sparsity by encouraging the 2D predictions to emulate the dense distribution of the semantic predictions from the camera images. Experiments show that our techniques enable our model to achieve intermediate 2D semantic predictions with dense distribution and higher accuracy, which effectively enhances the final 3D accuracy. Comparisons with previous methods demonstrate our superior performance in both 2D and 3D spaces.

Continual learning (CL) is essential for deploying large language models (LLMs) in dynamic real-world environments without the need for costly retraining. Recent model merging-based methods have attracted significant attention, but they still struggle to effectively manage the trade-off between learning new knowledge and preventing forgetting, a challenge largely stemming from suboptimal number of merges and merging frequency. In this paper, we introduce Adaptive Iterative Model Merging (AimMerging), a novel CL framework that utilizes learning and forgetting signals from the training trajectory to dynamically monitor the model's training status. Guided by dynamic monitoring, the training trajectory-guided merge controller adaptively determines the timing and frequency of iterative fusion, while the rehearsal-based knowledge fusion module computes the merging weights and executes the fusion. Comprehensive experiments on three CL benchmarks with various model sizes (from 770M to 13B) demonstrate that AimMerging achieves significant performance improvements over existing state-of-the-art methods, with an average relative improvement of 80% and 59% on FWT and BWT, respectively. Convolutional neural networks are constructed with massive operations with different types and are highly computationally intensive. Among these operations, multiplication operation is higher in computational complexity and usually requires {more} energy consumption with longer inference time than other operations, which hinders the deployment of convolutional neural networks on mobile devices. In many resource-limited edge devices, complicated operations can be calculated via lookup tables to reduce computational cost. Motivated by this, in this paper, we introduce a generic and efficient lookup operation which can be used as a basic operation for the construction of neural networks. Instead of calculating the multiplication of weights and activation values, simple yet efficient lookup operations are adopted to compute their responses. To enable end-to-end optimization of the lookup operation, we construct the lookup tables in a differentiable manner and propose several training strategies to promote their convergence. By replacing computationally expensive multiplication operations with our lookup operations, we develop lookup networks for the image classification, image super-resolution, and point cloud classification tasks. It is demonstrated that our lookup networks can benefit from the lookup operations to achieve higher efficiency in terms of energy consumption and inference speed while maintaining competitive performance to vanilla convolutional networks. Extensive experiments show that our lookup networks produce state-of-the-art performance on different tasks (both classification and regression tasks) and different data types (both images and point clouds).

Bridging the Domain Gap for Multi-Agent PerceptionRunsheng Xu, Jinlong Li, Xiaoyu Dong et al.
Existing multi-agent perception algorithms usually select to share deep neural features extracted from raw sensing data between agents, achieving a trade-off between accuracy and communication bandwidth limit. However, these methods assume all agents have identical neural networks, which might not be practical in the real world. The transmitted features can have a large domain gap when the models differ, leading to a dramatic performance drop in multi-agent perception. In this paper, we propose the first lightweight framework to bridge such domain gaps for multi-agent perception, which can be a plug-in module for most existing systems while maintaining confidentiality. Our framework consists of a learnable feature resizer to align features in multiple dimensions and a sparse cross-domain transformer for domain adaption. Extensive experiments on the public multi-agent perception dataset V2XSet have demonstrated that our method can effectively bridge the gap for features from different domains and outperform other baseline methods significantly by at least 8% for point-cloud-based 3D object detection.

ROMNet: Renovate the Old MemoriesRunsheng Xu, Zhengzhong Tu, Yuanqi Du et al.
Renovating the memories in old photos is an intriguing research topic in computer vision fields. These legacy images often suffer from severe and commingled degradations such as cracks, noise, and color-fading, while lack of large-scale paired old photo datasets makes this restoration task very challenging. In this work, we present a novel reference-based end-to-end learning framework that can jointly repair and colorize the degraded legacy pictures. Specifically, the proposed framework consists of three modules: a restoration sub-network for degradation restoration, a similarity sub-network for color histogram matching and transfer, and a colorization subnet that learns to predict the chroma elements of the images conditioned on chromatic reference signals. The whole system takes advantage of the color histogram priors in a given reference image, which vastly reduces the dependency on large-scale training data. Apart from the proposed method, we also create, to our knowledge, the first public and real-world old photo dataset with paired ground truth for evaluating old photo restoration models, wherein each old photo is paired with a manually restored pristine image by PhotoShop experts. Our extensive experiments conducted on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms state-of-the-arts both quantitatively and qualitatively.
