How Do LLMs and VLMs Understand Viewpoint Rotation Without Vision? An Interpretability StudyZhen Yang, Ping Jian, Zhongbin Guo et al.
Over the past year, spatial intelligence has drawn increasing attention. Many prior works study it from the perspective of visual-spatial intelligence, where models have access to visuospatial information from visual inputs. However, in the absence of visual information, whether linguistic intelligence alone is sufficient to endow models with spatial intelligence, and how models perform relevant tasks with text-only inputs still remain unexplored. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on a fundamental and critical capability in spatial intelligence from a linguistic perspective: viewpoint rotation understanding (VRU). Specifically, LLMs and VLMs are asked to infer their final viewpoint and predict the corresponding observation in an environment given textual description of viewpoint rotation and observation over multiple steps. We find that both LLMs and VLMs perform poorly on our proposed dataset while human can easily achieve 100% accuracy, indicating a substantial gap between current model capabilities and the requirements of spatial intelligence. To uncover the underlying mechanisms, we conduct a layer-wise probing analysis and head-wise causal intervention. Our findings reveal that although models encode viewpoint information in the hidden states, they appear to struggle to bind the viewpoint position with corresponding observation, resulting in a hallucination in final layers. Finally, we selectively fine-tune the key attention heads identified by causal intervention to improve VRU performance. Experimental results demonstrate that such selective fine-tuning achieves improved VRU performance while avoiding catastrophic forgetting of generic abilities. Thought-Path Contrastive Learning via Premise-Oriented Data Augmentation for Logical Reading ComprehensionChenxu Wang, Ping Jian, Zhen Yang
Logical reading comprehension is a challenging task that entails grasping the underlying semantics of text and applying reasoning to deduce the correct answer. Prior researches have primarily focused on enhancing logical reasoning capabilities through Chain-of-Thought (CoT) or data augmentation. However, previous work constructing chain-of-thought rationales concentrates solely on analyzing correct options, neglecting the incorrect alternatives. Addtionally, earlier efforts on data augmentation by altering contexts rely on rule-based methods, which result in generated contexts that lack diversity and coherence. To address these issues, we propose a Premise-Oriented Data Augmentation (PODA) framework. This framework can generate CoT rationales including analyses for both correct and incorrect options, while constructing diverse and high-quality counterfactual contexts from incorrect candidate options. We integrate summarizing premises and identifying premises for each option into rationales. Subsequently, we employ multi-step prompts with identified premises to construct counterfactual context. To facilitate the model's capabilities to better differentiate the reasoning process associated with each option, we introduce a novel thought-path contrastive learning method that compares reasoning paths between the original and counterfactual samples. Experimental results on three representative LLMs demonstrate that our method can improve the baselines substantially across two challenging logical reasoning benchmarks (ReClor and LogiQA 2.0). Can LLMs See Without Pixels? Benchmarking Spatial Intelligence from Textual DescriptionsZhongbin Guo, Zhen Yang, Yushan Li et al.
Recent advancements in Spatial Intelligence (SI) have predominantly relied on Vision-Language Models (VLMs), yet a critical question remains: does spatial understanding originate from visual encoders or the fundamental reasoning backbone? Inspired by this question, we introduce SiT-Bench, a novel benchmark designed to evaluate the SI performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) without pixel-level input, comprises over 3,800 expert-annotated items across five primary categories and 17 subtasks, ranging from egocentric navigation and perspective transformation to fine-grained robotic manipulation. By converting single/multi-view scenes into high-fidelity, coordinate-aware textual descriptions, we challenge LLMs to perform symbolic textual reasoning rather than visual pattern matching. Evaluation results of state-of-the-art (SOTA) LLMs reveals that while models achieve proficiency in localized semantic tasks, a significant "spatial gap" remains in global consistency. Notably, we find that explicit spatial reasoning significantly boosts performance, suggesting that LLMs possess latent world-modeling potential. Our proposed dataset SiT-Bench serves as a foundational resource to foster the development of spatially-grounded LLM backbones for future VLMs and embodied agents. LISA-3D: Lifting Language-Image Segmentation to 3D via Multi-View ConsistencyZhongbin Guo, Jiahe Liu, Wenyu Gao et al.
Text-driven 3D reconstruction demands a mask generator that simultaneously understands open-vocabulary instructions and remains consistent across viewpoints. We present LISA-3D, a two-stage framework that lifts language-image segmentation into 3D by retrofitting the instruction-following model LISA with geometry-aware Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) layers and reusing a frozen SAM-3D reconstructor. During training we exploit off-the-shelf RGB-D sequences and their camera poses to build a differentiable reprojection loss that enforces cross-view agreement without requiring any additional 3D-text supervision. The resulting masks are concatenated with RGB images to form RGBA prompts for SAM-3D, which outputs Gaussian splats or textured meshes without retraining. Across ScanRefer and Nr3D, LISA-3D improves language-to-3D accuracy by up to +15.6 points over single-view baselines while adapting only 11.6M parameters. The system is modular, data-efficient, and supports zero-shot deployment on unseen categories, providing a practical recipe for language-guided 3D content creation. Multi-choice Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) is a challenging extension of Natural Language Processing (NLP) that requires the ability to comprehend the semantics and logical relationships between entities in a given text. The MRC task has traditionally been viewed as a process of answering questions based on the given text. This single-stage approach has often led the network to concentrate on generating the correct answer, potentially neglecting the comprehension of the text itself. As a result, many prevalent models have faced challenges in performing well on this task when dealing with longer texts. In this paper, we propose a two-stage knowledge distillation method that teaches the model to better comprehend the document by dividing the MRC task into two separate stages. Our experimental results show that the student model, when equipped with our method, achieves significant improvements, demonstrating the effectiveness of our method.

HINTBench: Horizon-agent Intrinsic Non-attack Trajectory BenchmarkJiacheng Wang, Jinchang Hou, Fabian Wang et al.
Existing agent-safety evaluation has focused mainly on externally induced risks. Yet agents may still enter unsafe trajectories under benign conditions. We study this complementary but underexplored setting through the lens of \emph{intrinsic} risk, where intrinsic failures remain latent, propagate across long-horizon execution, and eventually lead to high-consequence outcomes. To evaluate this setting, we introduce \emph{non-attack intrinsic risk auditing} and present \textbf{HINTBench}, a benchmark of 629 agent trajectories (523 risky, 106 safe; 33 steps on average) supporting three tasks: risk detection, risk-step localization, and intrinsic failure-type identification. Its annotations are organized under a unified five-constraint taxonomy. Experiments reveal a substantial capability gap: strong LLMs perform well on trajectory-level risk detection, but their performance drops to below 35 Strict-F1 on risk-step localization, while fine-grained failure diagnosis proves even harder. Existing guard models transfer poorly to this setting. These findings establish intrinsic risk auditing as an open challenge for agent safety.

Prompt-based Logical Semantics Enhancement for Implicit Discourse Relation RecognitionChenxu Wang, Ping Jian, Mu Huang
Implicit Discourse Relation Recognition (IDRR), which infers discourse relations without the help of explicit connectives, is still a crucial and challenging task for discourse parsing. Recent works tend to exploit the hierarchical structure information from the annotated senses, which demonstrate enhanced discourse relation representations can be obtained by integrating sense hierarchy. Nevertheless, the performance and robustness for IDRR are significantly constrained by the availability of annotated data. Fortunately, there is a wealth of unannotated utterances with explicit connectives, that can be utilized to acquire enriched discourse relation features. In light of such motivation, we propose a Prompt-based Logical Semantics Enhancement (PLSE) method for IDRR. Essentially, our method seamlessly injects knowledge relevant to discourse relation into pre-trained language models through prompt-based connective prediction. Furthermore, considering the prompt-based connective prediction exhibits local dependencies due to the deficiency of masked language model (MLM) in capturing global semantics, we design a novel self-supervised learning objective based on mutual information maximization to derive enhanced representations of logical semantics for IDRR. Experimental results on PDTB 2.0 and CoNLL16 datasets demonstrate that our method achieves outstanding and consistent performance against the current state-of-the-art models.

Patch the Distribution Mismatch: RL Rewriting Agent for Stable Off-Policy SFTJiacheng Wang, Ping Jian, Zhen Yang et al.
Large language models (LLMs) have made rapid progress, yet adapting them to downstream scenarios still commonly relies on supervised fine-tuning (SFT). When downstream data exhibit a substantial distribution shift from the model's prior training distribution, SFT can induce catastrophic forgetting. To narrow this gap, data rewriting has been proposed as a data-centric approach that rewrites downstream training data prior to SFT. However, existing methods typically sample rewrites from a prompt-induced conditional distribution, so the resulting targets are not necessarily aligned with the model's natural QA-style generation distribution. Moreover, reliance on fixed templates can lead to diversity collapse. To address these issues, we cast data rewriting as a policy learning problem and learn a rewriting policy that better matches the backbone's QA-style generation distribution while preserving diversity. Since distributional alignment, diversity and task consistency are automatically evaluable but difficult to optimize end-to-end with differentiable objectives, we leverage reinforcement learning to optimize the rewrite distribution under reward feedback and propose an RL-based data-rewriting agent. The agent jointly optimizes QA-style distributional alignment and diversity under a hard task-consistency gate, thereby constructing a higher-quality rewritten dataset for downstream SFT. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves downstream gains comparable to standard SFT while reducing forgetting on non-downstream benchmarks by 12.34% on average. ICL-Router: In-Context Learned Model Representations for LLM RoutingChenxu Wang, Hao Li, Yiqun Zhang et al.
Large language models (LLMs) often exhibit complementary strengths. Model routing harnesses these strengths by dynamically directing each query to the most suitable model, given a candidate model pool. However, routing performance relies on accurate model representations, and adding new models typically requires retraining, limiting scalability. To address these challenges, we propose a novel routing method using in-context vectors to represent model capabilities. The method proceeds in two stages. First, queries are embedded and projected into vectors, with a projector and LLM-based router trained to reconstruct the original queries, aligning vector representations with the router's semantic space. Second, each candidate model is profiled on a query set, and the router learns -- based on in-context vectors of query and model performance -- to predict whether each model can correctly answer new queries. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art routing performance in both in-distribution and out-of-distribution tasks. Look, Listen and Segment: Towards Weakly Supervised Audio-visual Semantic SegmentationChengzhi Li, Heyan Huang, Ping Jian et al.
Audio-Visual Semantic Segmentation (AVSS) aligns audio and video at the pixel level but requires costly per-frame annotations. We introduce Weakly Supervised Audio-Visual Semantic Segmentation (WSAVSS), which uses only video-level labels to generate per-frame semantic masks of sounding objects. We decompose WSAVSS into looking, listening, and segmentation, and propose Progressive Cross-modal Alignment for Semantics (PCAS) with two modules: *Looking-before-Listening* and *Listening-before-Segmentation*. PCAS builds a classification task to train the audio-visual encoder using video labels, injects visual semantic prompts to enhance frame-level audio understanding, and then applies progressive contrastive alignment to map audio categories to image regions without mask annotations. Experiments show PCAS achieves state-of-the-art performance among weakly supervised methods on AVS and remains competitive with fully supervised baselines on AVSS, validating its effectiveness.

Beyond Flatlands: Unlocking Spatial Intelligence by Decoupling 3D Reasoning from Numerical RegressionZhongbin Guo, Jiahe Liu, Yushan Li et al.
Existing Vision Language Models (VLMs) architecturally rooted in "flatland" perception, fundamentally struggle to comprehend real-world 3D spatial intelligence. This failure stems from a dual-bottleneck: input-stage conflict between computationally exorbitant geometric-aware encoders and superficial 2D-only features, and output-stage misalignment where discrete tokenizers are structurally incapable of producing precise, continuous numerical values. To break this impasse, we introduce GEODE (Geometric-Output and Decoupled-Input Engine), a novel architecture that resolves this dual-bottleneck by decoupling 3D reasoning from numerical generation. GEODE augments main VLM with two specialized, plug-and-play modules: Decoupled Rationale Module (DRM) that acts as spatial co-processor, aligning explicit 3D data with 2D visual features via cross-attention and distilling spatial Chain-of-Thought (CoT) logic into injectable Rationale Tokens; and Direct Regression Head (DRH), an "Embedding-as-Value" paradigm which routes specialized control tokens to a lightweight MLP for precise, continuous regression of scalars and 3D bounding boxes. The synergy of these modules allows our 1.5B parameter model to function as a high-level semantic dispatcher, achieving state-of-the-art spatial reasoning performance that rivals 7B+ models.

Improving Temporal Understanding Logic Consistency in Video-Language Models via Attention EnhancementChengzhi Li, Heyan Huang, Ping Jian et al.
Large language models (LLMs) often generate self-contradictory outputs, which severely impacts their reliability and hinders their adoption in practical applications. In video-language models (Video-LLMs), this phenomenon recently draws the attention of researchers. Specifically, these models fail to provide logically consistent responses to rephrased questions based on their grounding outputs. However, the underlying causes of this phenomenon remain underexplored. In this work, we adopt an interpretability-driven approach to analyze, statistically summarize, and intervention the potential factors of the phenomenon. We find that one of the primary reasons for the inconsistency in responses lies in the inability of cross-modal attention heads to effectively distinguish video tokens across different timestamps. To address this, we propose an attention enhancement method called Temporally Conditioned Attention Sharpening (TCAS), which constructs an enhancement objective based on attention distinctions to enhance the model's temporal resolution capability, thereby improving its temporal understanding logic consistency. Experimental results demonstrate that our method significantly enhances the temporal logic consistency of Video-LLMs. Further interpretability analyses reveal that our method indeed improves the temporal discriminability of attention heads, validating our conclusions. Additionally, our method achieves performance improvements in general video temporal grounding tasks, highlighting that temporal logic consistency is a bottleneck in temporal understanding. By enhancing consistency, our method drives significant progress in video temporal understanding.

TAMMs: Temporal-Aware Multimodal Model for Satellite Image Change Understanding and ForecastingZhongbin Guo, Yuhao Wang, Ping Jian et al.
Temporal Change Description (TCD) and Future Satellite Image Forecasting (FSIF) are critical, yet historically disjointed tasks in Satellite Image Time Series (SITS) analysis. Both are fundamentally limited by the common challenge of modeling long-range temporal dynamics. To explore how to improve the performance of methods on both tasks simultaneously by enhancing long-range temporal understanding capabilities, we introduce TAMMs, the first unified framework designed to jointly perform TCD and FSIF within a single MLLM-diffusion architecture. TAMMs introduces two key innovations: Temporal Adaptation Modules (TAM) enhance frozen MLLM's ability to comprehend long-range dynamics, and Semantic-Fused Control Injection (SFCI) mechanism translates this change understanding into fine-grained generative control. This synergistic design makes the understanding from the TCD task to directly inform and improve the consistency of the FSIF task. Extensive experiments demonstrate TAMMs significantly outperforms state-of-the-art specialist baselines on both tasks.

MS-Ranker: Accumulating Evidence from Potentially Correct Candidates for Answer SelectionYingxue Zhang, Fandong Meng, Peng Li et al.
As conventional answer selection (AS) methods generally match the question with each candidate answer independently, they suffer from the lack of matching information between the question and the candidate. To address this problem, we propose a novel reinforcement learning (RL) based multi-step ranking model, named MS-Ranker, which accumulates information from potentially correct candidate answers as extra evidence for matching the question with a candidate. In specific, we explicitly consider the potential correctness of candidates and update the evidence with a gating mechanism. Moreover, as we use a listwise ranking reward, our model learns to pay more attention to the overall performance. Experiments on two benchmarks, namely WikiQA and SemEval-2016 CQA, show that our model significantly outperforms existing methods that do not rely on external resources.

In this paper, we transform tag recommendation into a word-based text generation problem and introduce a sequence-to-sequence model. The model inherits the advantages of LSTM-based encoder for sequential modeling and attention-based decoder with local positional encodings for learning relations globally. Experimental results on Zhihu datasets illustrate the proposed model outperforms other state-of-the-art text classification based methods.

Neural Chinese Word Segmentation as Sequence to Sequence TranslationXuewen Shi, Heyan Huang, Ping Jian et al.
Recently, Chinese word segmentation (CWS) methods using neural networks have made impressive progress. Most of them regard the CWS as a sequence labeling problem which construct models based on local features rather than considering global information of input sequence. In this paper, we cast the CWS as a sequence translation problem and propose a novel sequence-to-sequence CWS model with an attention-based encoder-decoder framework. The model captures the global information from the input and directly outputs the segmented sequence. It can also tackle other NLP tasks with CWS jointly in an end-to-end mode. Experiments on Weibo, PKU and MSRA benchmark datasets show that our approach has achieved competitive performances compared with state-of-the-art methods. Meanwhile, we successfully applied our proposed model to jointly learning CWS and Chinese spelling correction, which demonstrates its applicability of multi-task fusion.

Semantic Graph Convolutional Network for Implicit Discourse Relation ClassificationYingxue Zhang, Ping Jian, Fandong Meng et al.
Implicit discourse relation classification is of great importance for discourse parsing, but remains a challenging problem due to the absence of explicit discourse connectives communicating these relations. Modeling the semantic interactions between the two arguments of a relation has proven useful for detecting implicit discourse relations. However, most previous approaches model such semantic interactions from a shallow interactive level, which is inadequate on capturing enough semantic information. In this paper, we propose a novel and effective Semantic Graph Convolutional Network (SGCN) to enhance the modeling of inter-argument semantics on a deeper interaction level for implicit discourse relation classification. We first build an interaction graph over representations of the two arguments, and then automatically extract in-depth semantic interactive information through graph convolution. Experimental results on the English corpus PDTB and the Chinese corpus CDTB both demonstrate the superiority of our model to previous state-of-the-art systems.

Induction Networks for Few-Shot Text ClassificationRuiying Geng, Binhua Li, Yongbin Li et al.
Text classification tends to struggle when data is deficient or when it needs to adapt to unseen classes. In such challenging scenarios, recent studies have used meta-learning to simulate the few-shot task, in which new queries are compared to a small support set at the sample-wise level. However, this sample-wise comparison may be severely disturbed by the various expressions in the same class. Therefore, we should be able to learn a general representation of each class in the support set and then compare it to new queries. In this paper, we propose a novel Induction Network to learn such a generalized class-wise representation, by innovatively leveraging the dynamic routing algorithm in meta-learning. In this way, we find the model is able to induce and generalize better. We evaluate the proposed model on a well-studied sentiment classification dataset (English) and a real-world dialogue intent classification dataset (Chinese). Experiment results show that on both datasets, the proposed model significantly outperforms the existing state-of-the-art approaches, proving the effectiveness of class-wise generalization in few-shot text classification.
