Enhancing Embedding Representation Stability in Recommendation Systems with Semantic IDCarolina Zheng, Minhui Huang, Dmitrii Pedchenko et al.
The exponential growth of online content has posed significant challenges to ID-based models in industrial recommendation systems, ranging from extremely high cardinality and dynamically growing ID space, to highly skewed engagement distributions, to prediction instability as a result of natural id life cycles (e.g, the birth of new IDs and retirement of old IDs). To address these issues, many systems rely on random hashing to handle the id space and control the corresponding model parameters (i.e embedding table). However, this approach introduces data pollution from multiple ids sharing the same embedding, leading to degraded model performance and embedding representation instability. This paper examines these challenges and introduces Semantic ID prefix ngram, a novel token parameterization technique that significantly improves the performance of the original Semantic ID. Semantic ID prefix ngram creates semantically meaningful collisions by hierarchically clustering items based on their content embeddings, as opposed to random assignments. Through extensive experimentation, we demonstrate that Semantic ID prefix ngram not only addresses embedding instability but also significantly improves tail id modeling, reduces overfitting, and mitigates representation shifts. We further highlight the advantages of Semantic ID prefix ngram in attention-based models that contextualize user histories, showing substantial performance improvements. We also report our experience of integrating Semantic ID into Meta production Ads Ranking system, leading to notable performance gains and enhanced prediction stability in live deployments.

Voice-Face Cross-modal Matching and Retrieval: A BenchmarkChuyuan Xiong, Deyuan Zhang, Tao Liu et al.
Cross-modal associations between voice and face from a person can be learnt algorithmically, which can benefit a lot of applications. The problem can be defined as voice-face matching and retrieval tasks. Much research attention has been paid on these tasks recently. However, this research is still in the early stage. Test schemes based on random tuple mining tend to have low test confidence. Generalization ability of models can not be evaluated by small scale datasets. Performance metrics on various tasks are scarce. A benchmark for this problem needs to be established. In this paper, first, a framework based on comprehensive studies is proposed for voice-face matching and retrieval. It achieves state-of-the-art performance with various performance metrics on different tasks and with high test confidence on large scale datasets, which can be taken as a baseline for the follow-up research. In this framework, a voice anchored L2-Norm constrained metric space is proposed, and cross-modal embeddings are learned with CNN-based networks and triplet loss in the metric space. The embedding learning process can be more effective and efficient with this strategy. Different network structures of the framework and the cross language transfer abilities of the model are also analyzed. Second, a voice-face dataset (with 1.15M face data and 0.29M audio data) from Chinese speakers is constructed, and a convenient and quality controllable dataset collection tool is developed. The dataset and source code of the paper will be published together with this paper.

PT-Spike: A Precise-Time-Dependent Single Spike Neuromorphic Architecture with Efficient Supervised LearningTao Liu, Lei Jiang, Yier Jin et al.
One of the most exciting advancements in AI over the last decade is the wide adoption of ANNs, such as DNN and CNN, in many real-world applications. However, the underlying massive amounts of computation and storage requirement greatly challenge their applicability in resource-limited platforms like the drone, mobile phone, and IoT devices etc. The third generation of neural network model--Spiking Neural Network (SNN), inspired by the working mechanism and efficiency of human brain, has emerged as a promising solution for achieving more impressive computing and power efficiency within light-weighted devices (e.g. single chip). However, the relevant research activities have been narrowly carried out on conventional rate-based spiking system designs for fulfilling the practical cognitive tasks, underestimating SNN's energy efficiency, throughput, and system flexibility. Although the time-based SNN can be more attractive conceptually, its potentials are not unleashed in realistic applications due to lack of efficient coding and practical learning schemes. In this work, a Precise-Time-Dependent Single Spike Neuromorphic Architecture, namely "PT-Spike", is developed to bridge this gap. Three constituent hardware-favorable techniques: precise single-spike temporal encoding, efficient supervised temporal learning, and fast asymmetric decoding are proposed accordingly to boost the energy efficiency and data processing capability of the time-based SNN at a more compact neural network model size when executing real cognitive tasks. Simulation results show that "PT-Spike" demonstrates significant improvements in network size, processing efficiency and power consumption with marginal classification accuracy degradation when compared with the rate-based SNN and ANN under the similar network configuration.
