FLGo: A Fully Customizable Federated Learning Platform

Zheng Wang, Xiaoliang Fan, Zhaopeng Peng et al.

Federated learning (FL) has found numerous applications in healthcare, finance, and IoT scenarios. Many existing FL frameworks offer a range of benchmarks to evaluate the performance of FL under realistic conditions. However, the process of customizing simulations to accommodate application-specific settings, data heterogeneity, and system heterogeneity typically remains unnecessarily complicated. This creates significant hurdles for traditional ML researchers in exploring the usage of FL, while also compromising the shareability of codes across FL frameworks. To address this issue, we propose a novel lightweight FL platform called FLGo, to facilitate cross-application FL studies with a high degree of shareability. Our platform offers 40+ benchmarks, 20+ algorithms, and 2 system simulators as out-of-the-box plugins. We also provide user-friendly APIs for quickly customizing new plugins that can be readily shared and reused for improved reproducibility. Finally, we develop a range of experimental tools, including parallel acceleration, experiment tracker and analyzer, and parameters auto-tuning. FLGo is maintained at \url{flgo-xmu.github.io}.

SAGE-NDVI: A Stereotype-Breaking Evaluation Metric for Remote Sensing Image Dehazing Using Satellite-to-Ground NDVI Knowledge

Zepeng Liu, Zhicheng Yang, Mingye Zhu et al.

Image dehazing is a meaningful low-level computer vision task and can be applied to a variety of contexts. In our industrial deployment scenario based on remote sensing (RS) images, the quality of image dehazing directly affects the grade of our crop identification and growth monitoring products. However, the widely used peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index (SSIM) provide ambiguous visual interpretation. In this paper, we design a new objective metric for RS image dehazing evaluation. Our proposed metric leverages a ground-based phenology observation resource to calculate the vegetation index error between RS and ground images at a hazy date. Extensive experiments validate that our metric appropriately evaluates different dehazing models and is in line with human visual perception.

Agriculture-Vision Challenge 2022 -- The Runner-Up Solution for Agricultural Pattern Recognition via Transformer-based Models

Zhicheng Yang, Jui-Hsin Lai, Jun Zhou et al.

The Agriculture-Vision Challenge in CVPR is one of the most famous and competitive challenges for global researchers to break the boundary between computer vision and agriculture sectors, aiming at agricultural pattern recognition from aerial images. In this paper, we propose our solution to the third Agriculture-Vision Challenge in CVPR 2022. We leverage a data pre-processing scheme and several Transformer-based models as well as data augmentation techniques to achieve a mIoU of 0.582, accomplishing the 2nd place in this challenge.

Prior Guided Feature Enrichment Network for Few-Shot Segmentation

Zhuotao Tian, Hengshuang Zhao, Michelle Shu et al.

State-of-the-art semantic segmentation methods require sufficient labeled data to achieve good results and hardly work on unseen classes without fine-tuning. Few-shot segmentation is thus proposed to tackle this problem by learning a model that quickly adapts to new classes with a few labeled support samples. Theses frameworks still face the challenge of generalization ability reduction on unseen classes due to inappropriate use of high-level semantic information of training classes and spatial inconsistency between query and support targets. To alleviate these issues, we propose the Prior Guided Feature Enrichment Network (PFENet). It consists of novel designs of (1) a training-free prior mask generation method that not only retains generalization power but also improves model performance and (2) Feature Enrichment Module (FEM) that overcomes spatial inconsistency by adaptively enriching query features with support features and prior masks. Extensive experiments on PASCAL-5$^i$ and COCO prove that the proposed prior generation method and FEM both improve the baseline method significantly. Our PFENet also outperforms state-of-the-art methods by a large margin without efficiency loss. It is surprising that our model even generalizes to cases without labeled support samples. Our code is available at https://github.com/Jia-Research-Lab/PFENet/.

Spectral Roll-off Points Variations: Exploring Useful Information in Feature Maps by Its Variations

Yunkai Yu, Yuyang You, Zhihong Yang et al.

Useful information (UI) is an elusive concept in neural networks. A quantitative measurement of UI is absent, despite the variations of UI can be recognized by prior knowledge. The communication bandwidth of feature maps decreases after downscaling operations, but UI flows smoothly after training due to lower Nyquist frequency. Inspired by the low-Nyqusit-frequency nature of UI, we propose the use of spectral roll-off points (SROPs) to estimate UI on variations. The computation of an SROP is extended from a 1-D signal to a 2-D image by the required rotation invariance in image classification tasks. SROP statistics across feature maps are implemented as layer-wise useful information estimates. We design sanity checks to explore SROP variations when UI variations are produced by variations in model input, model architecture and training stages. The variations of SROP is synchronizes with UI variations in various randomized and sufficiently trained model structures. Therefore, SROP variations is an accurate and convenient sign of UI variations, which promotes the explainability of data representations with respect to frequency-domain knowledge.

2D Attentional Irregular Scene Text Recognizer

Pengyuan Lyu, Zhicheng Yang, Xinhang Leng et al.

Irregular scene text, which has complex layout in 2D space, is challenging to most previous scene text recognizers. Recently, some irregular scene text recognizers either rectify the irregular text to regular text image with approximate 1D layout or transform the 2D image feature map to 1D feature sequence. Though these methods have achieved good performance, the robustness and accuracy are still limited due to the loss of spatial information in the process of 2D to 1D transformation. Different from all of previous, we in this paper propose a framework which transforms the irregular text with 2D layout to character sequence directly via 2D attentional scheme. We utilize a relation attention module to capture the dependencies of feature maps and a parallel attention module to decode all characters in parallel, which make our method more effective and efficient. Extensive experiments on several public benchmarks as well as our collected multi-line text dataset show that our approach is effective to recognize regular and irregular scene text and outperforms previous methods both in accuracy and speed.

Wireless Access to Ultimate Virtual Reality 360-Degree Video At Home

Huanle Zhang, Ahmed Elmokashfi, Zhicheng Yang et al.

Virtual reality 360-degree videos will become the first prosperous online VR application. VR 360 videos are data-hungry and latency-sensitive that pose unique challenges to the networking infrastructure. In this paper, we focus on the ultimate VR 360 that satisfies human eye fidelity. The ultimate VR 360 requires downlink 1.5 Gbps for viewing and uplink 6.6 Gbps for live broadcasting, with round-trip time of less than 8.3 ms. On the other hand, wireless access to VR 360 services is preferred over wire-line transmission because of the better user experience and the safety concern (e.g., tripping hazard). We explore in this paper whether the most advanced wireless technologies from both cellular communications and WiFi communications support the ultimate VR 360. Specifically, we consider 5G in cellular communications, IEEE 802.11ac (operating in 5GHz) and IEEE 802.11ad (operating in 60GHz) in WiFi communications. According to their performance specified in their standards and/or empirical measurements, we have the following findings: (1) Only 5G has the potential to support both the the ultimate VR 360 viewing and live broadcasting. However, it is difficult for 5G to support multiple users of the ultimate VR live broadcasting at home; (2) IEEE 802.11ac supports the ultimate VR 360 viewing but fails to support the ultimate VR 360 live broadcasting because it does not meet the data rate requirement of the ultimate VR 360 live broadcasting; (3) IEEE 802.11ad fails to support the ultimate VR 360, because its current implementation incurs very high latency. Our preliminary results indicate that more advanced wireless technologies are needed to fully support multiple ultimate VR 360 users at home.
