Greedy Alignment Principle for Optimizer Selection

Recent works have shown that gradient-update alignment is a powerful signal for modulating optimizer updates, often leading to faster training. We promote this update-wise heuristic as a mathematically grounded principle for selecting and tuning optimizer hyperparameters. By treating gradients and updates as signals and an optimizer as a causal filter that maps between them, we formulate optimizer selection as maximizing the expected drop rate in loss over a prescribed family of optimizers. We show that this objective is exactly the inner product between the optimizer filter and the gradient autocorrelation, and prove that a greedy optimum exists and has a stability bound under perturbations of the estimated gradient statistics. Specializing in momentum-based optimizers, the theory yields simple dynamic momentum selection rules for both SGD+Momentum and Adam/AdamW. Experiments across image classification, language model fine-tuning, and vision transformer fine-tuning show that the resulting dynamic momentum rules match or improve upon the best fixed hyperparameters found via manual sweeps, reducing the need for exhaustive momentum sweeps. LucidDreamer: Domain-free Generation of 3D Gaussian Splatting Scenes

With the widespread usage of VR devices and contents, demands for 3D scene generation techniques become more popular. Existing 3D scene generation models, however, limit the target scene to specific domain, primarily due to their training strategies using 3D scan dataset that is far from the real-world. To address such limitation, we propose LucidDreamer, a domain-free scene generation pipeline by fully leveraging the power of existing large-scale diffusion-based generative model. Our LucidDreamer has two alternate steps: Dreaming and Alignment. First, to generate multi-view consistent images from inputs, we set the point cloud as a geometrical guideline for each image generation. Specifically, we project a portion of point cloud to the desired view and provide the projection as a guidance for inpainting using the generative model. The inpainted images are lifted to 3D space with estimated depth maps, composing a new points. Second, to aggregate the new points into the 3D scene, we propose an aligning algorithm which harmoniously integrates the portions of newly generated 3D scenes. The finally obtained 3D scene serves as initial points for optimizing Gaussian splats. LucidDreamer produces Gaussian splats that are highly-detailed compared to the previous 3D scene generation methods, with no constraint on domain of the target scene. Vector Scaffolding: Inter-Scale Orchestration for Differentiable Image Vectorization

Differentiable vector graphics have enabled powerful gradient-based optimization of vector primitives directly from raster images. However, existing frameworks formulate this as a flat optimization problem, forcing hundreds to thousands of randomly initialized curves to blindly compete for pixel-level error reduction. This disordered optimization leads to topology collapse, where macroscopic structures are distorted by internal high-frequency noise, resulting in a redundant and uneditable "polygon soup" that limits practical editability. To address this limitation, we propose Vector Scaffolding, a novel hierarchical optimization framework that shifts from flat pixel-matching to structured topological construction tailored for vector graphics. By identifying a key cause of topology collapse as the mathematical imbalance between area and boundary gradients, we introduce Interior Gradient Aggregation to stabilize the learning dynamics of multi-scale curve mixtures. Upon this stabilized landscape, we employ Progressive Stratification and Rapid Inflation Scheduling to progressively densify vector primitives with extremely high learning rates ($\times 50$). Experiments demonstrate that our approach accelerates optimization by $2.5\times$ while simultaneously improving PSNR by up to 1.4 dB over the previous state of the art.

Rethinking RGB Color Representation for Image Restoration Models

Image restoration models are typically trained with a pixel-wise distance loss defined over the RGB color representation space, which is well known to be a source of blurry and unrealistic textures in the restored images. The reason, we believe, is that the three-channel RGB space is insufficient for supervising the restoration models. To this end, we augment the representation to hold structural information of local neighborhoods at each pixel while keeping the color information and pixel-grainedness unharmed. The result is a new representation space, dubbed augmented RGB ($a$RGB) space. Substituting the underlying representation space for the per-pixel losses facilitates the training of image restoration models, thereby improving the performance without affecting the evaluation phase. Notably, when combined with auxiliary objectives such as adversarial or perceptual losses, our $a$RGB space consistently improves overall metrics by reconstructing both color and local structures, overcoming the conventional perception-distortion trade-off.

MARS2 2025 Challenge on Multimodal Reasoning: Datasets, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Outlook

This paper reviews the MARS2 2025 Challenge on Multimodal Reasoning. We aim to bring together different approaches in multimodal machine learning and LLMs via a large benchmark. We hope it better allows researchers to follow the state-of-the-art in this very dynamic area. Meanwhile, a growing number of testbeds have boosted the evolution of general-purpose large language models. Thus, this year's MARS2 focuses on real-world and specialized scenarios to broaden the multimodal reasoning applications of MLLMs. Our organizing team released two tailored datasets Lens and AdsQA as test sets, which support general reasoning in 12 daily scenarios and domain-specific reasoning in advertisement videos, respectively. We evaluated 40+ baselines that include both generalist MLLMs and task-specific models, and opened up three competition tracks, i.e., Visual Grounding in Real-world Scenarios (VG-RS), Visual Question Answering with Spatial Awareness (VQA-SA), and Visual Reasoning in Creative Advertisement Videos (VR-Ads). Finally, 76 teams from the renowned academic and industrial institutions have registered and 40+ valid submissions (out of 1200+) have been included in our ranking lists. Our datasets, code sets (40+ baselines and 15+ participants' methods), and rankings are publicly available on the MARS2 workshop website and our GitHub organization page https://github.com/mars2workshop/, where our updates and announcements of upcoming events will be continuously provided.

SemanticDraw: Towards Real-Time Interactive Content Creation from Image Diffusion Models

We introduce SemanticDraw, a new paradigm of interactive content creation where high-quality images are generated in near real-time from given multiple hand-drawn regions, each encoding prescribed semantic meaning. In order to maximize the productivity of content creators and to fully realize their artistic imagination, it requires both quick interactive interfaces and fine-grained regional controls in their tools. Despite astonishing generation quality from recent diffusion models, we find that existing approaches for regional controllability are very slow (52 seconds for $512 \times 512$ image) while not compatible with acceleration methods such as LCM, blocking their huge potential in interactive content creation. From this observation, we build our solution for interactive content creation in two steps: (1) we establish compatibility between region-based controls and acceleration techniques for diffusion models, maintaining high fidelity of multi-prompt image generation with $\times 10$ reduced number of inference steps, (2) we increase the generation throughput with our new multi-prompt stream batch pipeline, enabling low-latency generation from multiple, region-based text prompts on a single RTX 2080 Ti GPU. Our proposed framework is generalizable to any existing diffusion models and acceleration schedulers, allowing sub-second (0.64 seconds) image content creation application upon well-established image diffusion models. Clean Images are Hard to Reblur: Exploiting the Ill-Posed Inverse Task for Dynamic Scene Deblurring

The goal of dynamic scene deblurring is to remove the motion blur in a given image. Typical learning-based approaches implement their solutions by minimizing the L1 or L2 distance between the output and the reference sharp image. Recent attempts adopt visual recognition features in training to improve the perceptual quality. However, those features are primarily designed to capture high-level contexts rather than low-level structures such as blurriness. Instead, we propose a more direct way to make images sharper by exploiting the inverse task of deblurring, namely, reblurring. Reblurring amplifies the remaining blur to rebuild the original blur, however, a well-deblurred clean image with zero-magnitude blur is hard to reblur. Thus, we design two types of reblurring loss functions for better deblurring. The supervised reblurring loss at training stage compares the amplified blur between the deblurred and the sharp images. The self-supervised reblurring loss at inference stage inspects if there noticeable blur remains in the deblurred. Our experimental results on large-scale benchmarks and real images demonstrate the effectiveness of the reblurring losses in improving the perceptual quality of the deblurred images in terms of NIQE and LPIPS scores as well as visual sharpness.

AIM 2020 Challenge on Video Temporal Super-Resolution

Videos in the real-world contain various dynamics and motions that may look unnaturally discontinuous in time when the recordedframe rate is low. This paper reports the second AIM challenge on Video Temporal Super-Resolution (VTSR), a.k.a. frame interpolation, with a focus on the proposed solutions, results, and analysis. From low-frame-rate (15 fps) videos, the challenge participants are required to submit higher-frame-rate (30 and 60 fps) sequences by estimating temporally intermediate frames. To simulate realistic and challenging dynamics in the real-world, we employ the REDS_VTSR dataset derived from diverse videos captured in a hand-held camera for training and evaluation purposes. There have been 68 registered participants in the competition, and 5 teams (one withdrawn) have competed in the final testing phase. The winning team proposes the enhanced quadratic video interpolation method and achieves state-of-the-art on the VTSR task.
