UniPixie: Unified and Probabilistic 3D Physics Learning via Flow Matching

Existing feed-forward networks excel at predicting a single set of physical properties from visual appearance, but this point-estimate paradigm fundamentally fails to capture the real world's inherent physical ambiguity. We address this by reframing physics prediction as a task of learning a controllable, continuous distribution of material properties. We introduce UNIPIXIE, a framework trained to predict a continuous and parameterized path of physically plausible material properties from a single visual input. By learning a direct mapping along an object's softest-to-stiffest spectrum on our PIXIEMULTIVERSE dataset, UNIPIXIE allows for controllable generation of diverse, physically valid material fields via a single intuitive parameter. Crucially, UNIPIXIE introduces a novel unified architecture to produce simulation-ready parameters for diverse physics solvers, including continuum-based Material Point Method (MPM), reduced-order deformation based on Linear Blend Skinning (LBS), and anchor-based Spring-Mass systems, addressing a key portability issue in prior work. Experiments show our approach not only generates a rich variety of plausible dynamics but also reduces Young's Modulus prediction error by over 50% against the strongest deterministic baseline, bridging the gap between static point estimates and the continuous nature of physical reality. Certified Robust Neural Networks: Generalization and Corruption Resistance

Recent work have demonstrated that robustness (to "corruption") can be at odds with generalization. Adversarial training, for instance, aims to reduce the problematic susceptibility of modern neural networks to small data perturbations. Surprisingly, overfitting is a major concern in adversarial training despite being mostly absent in standard training. We provide here theoretical evidence for this peculiar "robust overfitting" phenomenon. Subsequently, we advance a novel distributionally robust loss function bridging robustness and generalization. We demonstrate both theoretically as well as empirically the loss to enjoy a certified level of robustness against two common types of corruption--data evasion and poisoning attacks--while ensuring guaranteed generalization. We show through careful numerical experiments that our resulting holistic robust (HR) training procedure yields SOTA performance. Finally, we indicate that HR training can be interpreted as a direct extension of adversarial training and comes with a negligible additional computational burden. Holistic Robust Data-Driven Decisions

The design of data-driven formulations for machine learning and decision-making with good out-of-sample performance is a key challenge. The observation that good in-sample performance does not guarantee good out-of-sample performance is generally known as overfitting. Practical overfitting can typically not be attributed to a single cause but is caused by several factors simultaneously. We consider here three overfitting sources: (i) statistical error as a result of working with finite sample data, (ii) data noise, which occurs when the data points are measured only with finite precision, and finally, (iii) data misspecification in which a small fraction of all data may be wholly corrupted. Although existing data-driven formulations may be robust against one of these three sources in isolation, they do not provide holistic protection against all overfitting sources simultaneously. We design a novel data-driven formulation that guarantees such holistic protection and is computationally viable. Our distributionally robust optimization formulation can be interpreted as a novel combination of a Kullback-Leibler and Lévy-Prokhorov robust optimization formulation. In the context of classification and regression problems, we show that several popular regularized and robust formulations naturally reduce to a particular case of our proposed novel formulation. Finally, we apply the proposed HR formulation to two real-life applications and study it alongside several benchmarks: (1) training neural networks on healthcare data, where we analyze various robustness and generalization properties in the presence of noise, labeling errors, and scarce data, (2) a portfolio selection problem with real stock data, and analyze the risk/return tradeoff under the natural severe distribution shift of the application.

ADMM-Q: An Improved Hessian-based Weight Quantizer for Post-Training Quantization of Large Language Models

Quantization is an effective strategy to reduce the storage and computation footprint of large language models (LLMs). Post-training quantization (PTQ) is a leading approach for compressing LLMs. Popular weight quantization procedures, including GPTQ and RTN, suffer in model utility, especially at aggressive quantization levels (sub-4-bit). We propose ADMM-Q, a novel weight quantization algorithm that considers the layer-wise quantization problem. Our algorithm is based on a combinatorial variant of the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). Our operator-splitting procedure updates weights continuously to minimize the layer-wise reconstruction error, while gradually enforcing the quantization constraints with convergence guarantees. We propose additional algorithmic enhancements (e.g., penalty scheduling, preconditioning, and a local search post-processing step) to make ADMM-Q efficient at LLM scale. ADMM-Q is modular and can be used as a drop-in replacement for any weight quantizer within existing quantization pipelines: ADMM-Q is fully composable with existing techniques including range clipping, learned or random rotations, and activation scaling. Using ADMM-Q in place of GPTQ on Qwen3-8B, we decrease WikiText-2 perplexity in: (i) the W3A16 weight-only setting (12.85 $\rightarrow$ 10.06); (ii) the W4A8 SmoothQuant procedure (9.29 $\rightarrow$ 8.68); and (iii) the W2A4KV4 SpinQuant procedure (66.11 $\rightarrow$ 19.42).

Reasoning Models Can be Accurately Pruned Via Chain-of-Thought Reconstruction

Reasoning language models such as DeepSeek-R1 produce long chain-of-thought traces during inference time which make them costly to deploy at scale. We show that using compression techniques such as neural network pruning produces greater performance loss than in typical language modeling tasks, and in some cases can make the model slower since they cause the model to produce more thinking tokens but with worse performance. We show that this is partly due to the fact that standard LLM pruning methods often focus on input reconstruction, whereas reasoning is a decode-dominated task. We introduce a simple, drop-in fix: during pruning we jointly reconstruct activations from the input and the model's on-policy chain-of-thought traces. This "Reasoning-Aware Compression" (RAC) integrates seamlessly into existing pruning workflows such as SparseGPT, and boosts their performance significantly. Preserving Deep Representations In One-Shot Pruning: A Hessian-Free Second-Order Optimization Framework

We present SNOWS, a one-shot post-training pruning framework aimed at reducing the cost of vision network inference without retraining. Current leading one-shot pruning methods minimize layer-wise least squares reconstruction error which does not take into account deeper network representations. We propose to optimize a more global reconstruction objective. This objective accounts for nonlinear activations deep in the network to obtain a better proxy for the network loss. This nonlinear objective leads to a more challenging optimization problem -- we demonstrate it can be solved efficiently using a specialized second-order optimization framework. A key innovation of our framework is the use of Hessian-free optimization to compute exact Newton descent steps without needing to compute or store the full Hessian matrix. A distinct advantage of SNOWS is that it can be readily applied on top of any sparse mask derived from prior methods, readjusting their weights to exploit nonlinearities in deep feature representations. SNOWS obtains state-of-the-art results on various one-shot pruning benchmarks including residual networks and Vision Transformers (ViT/B-16 and ViT/L-16, 86m and 304m parameters respectively).

Pixie: Fast and Generalizable Supervised Learning of 3D Physics from Pixels

Inferring the physical properties of 3D scenes from visual information is a critical yet challenging task for creating interactive and realistic virtual worlds. While humans intuitively grasp material characteristics such as elasticity or stiffness, existing methods often rely on slow, per-scene optimization, limiting their generalizability and application. To address this problem, we introduce PIXIE, a novel method that trains a generalizable neural network to predict physical properties across multiple scenes from 3D visual features purely using supervised losses. Once trained, our feed-forward network can perform fast inference of plausible material fields, which coupled with a learned static scene representation like Gaussian Splatting enables realistic physics simulation under external forces. To facilitate this research, we also collected PIXIEVERSE, one of the largest known datasets of paired 3D assets and physic material annotations. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that PIXIE is about 1.46-4.39x better and orders of magnitude faster than test-time optimization methods. By leveraging pretrained visual features like CLIP, our method can also zero-shot generalize to real-world scenes despite only ever been trained on synthetic data. https://pixie-3d.github.io/

DMS, AE, DAA: methods and applications of adaptive time series model selection, ensemble, and financial evaluation

We introduce three adaptive time series learning methods, called Dynamic Model Selection (DMS), Adaptive Ensemble (AE), and Dynamic Asset Allocation (DAA). The methods respectively handle model selection, ensembling, and contextual evaluation in financial time series. Empirically, we use the methods to forecast the returns of four key indices in the US market, incorporating information from the VIX and Yield curves. We present financial applications of the learning results, including fully-automated portfolios and dynamic hedging strategies. The strategies strongly outperform long-only benchmarks over our testing period, spanning from Q4 2015 to the end of 2021. The key outputs of the learning methods are interpreted during the 2020 market crash.
