MM-PCQA: Multi-Modal Learning for No-reference Point Cloud Quality AssessmentZicheng Zhang, Wei Sun, Xiongkuo Min et al.
The visual quality of point clouds has been greatly emphasized since the ever-increasing 3D vision applications are expected to provide cost-effective and high-quality experiences for users. Looking back on the development of point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) methods, the visual quality is usually evaluated by utilizing single-modal information, i.e., either extracted from the 2D projections or 3D point cloud. The 2D projections contain rich texture and semantic information but are highly dependent on viewpoints, while the 3D point clouds are more sensitive to geometry distortions and invariant to viewpoints. Therefore, to leverage the advantages of both point cloud and projected image modalities, we propose a novel no-reference point cloud quality assessment (NR-PCQA) metric in a multi-modal fashion. In specific, we split the point clouds into sub-models to represent local geometry distortions such as point shift and down-sampling. Then we render the point clouds into 2D image projections for texture feature extraction. To achieve the goals, the sub-models and projected images are encoded with point-based and image-based neural networks. Finally, symmetric cross-modal attention is employed to fuse multi-modal quality-aware information. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms all compared state-of-the-art methods and is far ahead of previous NR-PCQA methods, which highlights the effectiveness of the proposed method. Deep Neural Network for Blind Visual Quality Assessment of 4K ContentWei Lu, Wei Sun, Xiongkuo Min et al.
The 4K content can deliver a more immersive visual experience to consumers due to the huge improvement of spatial resolution. However, existing blind image quality assessment (BIQA) methods are not suitable for the original and upscaled 4K contents due to the expanded resolution and specific distortions. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based BIQA model for 4K content, which on one hand can recognize true and pseudo 4K content and on the other hand can evaluate their perceptual visual quality. Considering the characteristic that high spatial resolution can represent more abundant high-frequency information, we first propose a Grey-level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) based texture complexity measure to select three representative image patches from a 4K image, which can reduce the computational complexity and is proven to be very effective for the overall quality prediction through experiments. Then we extract different kinds of visual features from the intermediate layers of the convolutional neural network (CNN) and integrate them into the quality-aware feature representation. Finally, two multilayer perception (MLP) networks are utilized to map the quality-aware features into the class probability and the quality score for each patch respectively. The overall quality index is obtained through the average pooling of patch results. The proposed model is trained through the multi-task learning manner and we introduce an uncertainty principle to balance the losses of the classification and regression tasks. The experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms all compared BIQA metrics on four 4K content quality assessment databases.

DPNet: Dual-Path Network for Real-time Object Detection with Lightweight AttentionQuan Zhou, Huimin Shi, Weikang Xiang et al.
The recent advances of compressing high-accuracy convolution neural networks (CNNs) have witnessed remarkable progress for real-time object detection. To accelerate detection speed, lightweight detectors always have few convolution layers using single-path backbone. Single-path architecture, however, involves continuous pooling and downsampling operations, always resulting in coarse and inaccurate feature maps that are disadvantageous to locate objects. On the other hand, due to limited network capacity, recent lightweight networks are often weak in representing large scale visual data. To address these problems, this paper presents a dual-path network, named DPNet, with a lightweight attention scheme for real-time object detection. The dual-path architecture enables us to parallelly extract high-level semantic features and low-level object details. Although DPNet has nearly duplicated shape with respect to single-path detectors, the computational costs and model size are not significantly increased. To enhance representation capability, a lightweight self-correlation module (LSCM) is designed to capture global interactions, with only few computational overheads and network parameters. In neck, LSCM is extended into a lightweight crosscorrelation module (LCCM), capturing mutual dependencies among neighboring scale features. We have conducted exhaustive experiments on MS COCO and Pascal VOC 2007 datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that DPNet achieves state-of the-art trade-off between detection accuracy and implementation efficiency. Specifically, DPNet achieves 30.5% AP on MS COCO test-dev and 81.5% mAP on Pascal VOC 2007 test set, together mwith nearly 2.5M model size, 1.04 GFLOPs, and 164 FPS and 196 FPS for 320 x 320 input images of two datasets.

Impedance Modeling and Stability Analysis of Droop-Controlled Inverter Under Unbalanced Power Grid Operating ConditionsQiang Zeng, Lipeng Zhu, Yang Li et al.
With the growing integration of renewable energy sources into power grids, the risks of oscillation caused by interactions between grid-tied inverters and the grids are becoming increasingly prominent. Although existing studies have made significant progress in inverter modeling and oscillatory stability analysis, most of them do not sufficiently consider complex mirror frequency coupling effects (MFCE) under unbalanced operating conditions, leading to unreliable models and erroneous stability analysis results. To address this inadequacy, this work develops a novel sequence impedance modeling scheme that can be widely applied to unbalanced operating conditions. In particular, taking a representative type of grid-forming inverter for instance, i.e., droop-controlled inverter (DCI), a single-input single-output sequence impedance modeling method based on harmonic linearization (HL) is proposed to comprehensively model both a given DCI and the connected grid. By accounting for multi-frequency interactions within the DCI, this method captures MFCE and unbalanced factors, leading to a more accurate impedance model. Further, the dominant factors influencing system stability are identified with a combination of normalized sensitivity analysis and proportional weighting. Finally, the detailed impacts of these dominant factors on system stability margin under three typical unbalanced operating conditions are analyzed through the Bode criterion. The effectiveness and reliability of the whole scheme proposed in this work are validated on the constructed grid-connected droop-controlled experimental platform.

CoRTX: Contrastive Framework for Real-time ExplanationYu-Neng Chuang, Guanchu Wang, Fan Yang et al.
Recent advancements in explainable machine learning provide effective and faithful solutions for interpreting model behaviors. However, many explanation methods encounter efficiency issues, which largely limit their deployments in practical scenarios. Real-time explainer (RTX) frameworks have thus been proposed to accelerate the model explanation process by learning a one-feed-forward explainer. Existing RTX frameworks typically build the explainer under the supervised learning paradigm, which requires large amounts of explanation labels as the ground truth. Considering that accurate explanation labels are usually hard to obtain due to constrained computational resources and limited human efforts, effective explainer training is still challenging in practice. In this work, we propose a COntrastive Real-Time eXplanation (CoRTX) framework to learn the explanation-oriented representation and relieve the intensive dependence of explainer training on explanation labels. Specifically, we design a synthetic strategy to select positive and negative instances for the learning of explanation. Theoretical analysis show that our selection strategy can benefit the contrastive learning process on explanation tasks. Experimental results on three real-world datasets further demonstrate the efficiency and efficacy of our proposed CoRTX framework.

Accelerating Shapley Explanation via Contributive Cooperator SelectionGuanchu Wang, Yu-Neng Chuang, Mengnan Du et al.
Even though Shapley value provides an effective explanation for a DNN model prediction, the computation relies on the enumeration of all possible input feature coalitions, which leads to the exponentially growing complexity. To address this problem, we propose a novel method SHEAR to significantly accelerate the Shapley explanation for DNN models, where only a few coalitions of input features are involved in the computation. The selection of the feature coalitions follows our proposed Shapley chain rule to minimize the absolute error from the ground-truth Shapley values, such that the computation can be both efficient and accurate. To demonstrate the effectiveness, we comprehensively evaluate SHEAR across multiple metrics including the absolute error from the ground-truth Shapley value, the faithfulness of the explanations, and running speed. The experimental results indicate SHEAR consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baseline methods across different evaluation metrics, which demonstrates its potentials in real-world applications where the computational resource is limited.

As the reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) continue to advance, LLM-based agent systems offer advantages in flexibility and interpretability over traditional systems, garnering increasing attention. However, despite the widespread research interest and industrial application of agent systems, these systems, like their traditional counterparts, frequently encounter anomalies. These anomalies lead to instability and insecurity, hindering their further development. Therefore, a comprehensive and systematic approach to the operation and maintenance of agent systems is urgently needed. Unfortunately, current research on the operations of agent systems is sparse. To address this gap, we have undertaken a survey on agent system operations with the aim of establishing a clear framework for the field, defining the challenges, and facilitating further development. Specifically, this paper begins by systematically defining anomalies within agent systems, categorizing them into intra-agent anomalies and inter-agent anomalies. Next, we introduce a novel and comprehensive operational framework for agent systems, dubbed Agent System Operations (AgentOps). We provide detailed definitions and explanations of its four key stages: monitoring, anomaly detection, root cause localization, and resolution.

Rate-Perception Optimized Preprocessing for Video CodingChengqian Ma, Zhiqiang Wu, Chunlei Cai et al.
In the past decades, lots of progress have been done in the video compression field including traditional video codec and learning-based video codec. However, few studies focus on using preprocessing techniques to improve the rate-distortion performance. In this paper, we propose a rate-perception optimized preprocessing (RPP) method. We first introduce an adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform loss function which can save the bitrate and keep essential high frequency components as well. Furthermore, we also combine several state-of-the-art techniques from low-level vision fields into our approach, such as the high-order degradation model, efficient lightweight network design, and Image Quality Assessment model. By jointly using these powerful techniques, our RPP approach can achieve on average, 16.27% bitrate saving with different video encoders like AVC, HEVC, and VVC under multiple quality metrics. In the deployment stage, our RPP method is very simple and efficient which is not required any changes in the setting of video encoding, streaming, and decoding. Each input frame only needs to make a single pass through RPP before sending into video encoders. In addition, in our subjective visual quality test, 87% of users think videos with RPP are better or equal to videos by only using the codec to compress, while these videos with RPP save about 12% bitrate on average. Our RPP framework has been integrated into the production environment of our video transcoding services which serve millions of users every day.

Energy Management of Multi-mode Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle using Multi-agent Deep Reinforcement LearningMin Hua, Cetengfei Zhang, Fanggang Zhang et al.
The recently emerging multi-mode plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology is one of the pathways making contributions to decarbonization, and its energy management requires multiple-input and multipleoutput (MIMO) control. At the present, the existing methods usually decouple the MIMO control into singleoutput (MISO) control and can only achieve its local optimal performance. To optimize the multi-mode vehicle globally, this paper studies a MIMO control method for energy management of the multi-mode PHEV based on multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL). By introducing a relevance ratio, a hand-shaking strategy is proposed to enable two learning agents to work collaboratively under the MADRL framework using the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm. Unified settings for the DDPG agents are obtained through a sensitivity analysis of the influencing factors to the learning performance. The optimal working mode for the hand-shaking strategy is attained through a parametric study on the relevance ratio. The advantage of the proposed energy management method is demonstrated on a software-in-the-loop testing platform. The result of the study indicates that the learning rate of the DDPG agents is the greatest influencing factor for learning performance. Using the unified DDPG settings and a relevance ratio of 0.2, the proposed MADRL system can save up to 4% energy compared to the single-agent learning system and up to 23.54% energy compared to the conventional rule-based system.

Content-Adaptive Rate-Quality Curve Prediction Model in Media Processing SystemShibo Yin, Zhiyu Zhang, Peirong Ning et al.
In streaming media services, video transcoding is a common practice to alleviate bandwidth demands. Unfortunately, traditional methods employing a uniform rate factor (RF) across all videos often result in significant inefficiencies. Content-adaptive encoding (CAE) techniques address this by dynamically adjusting encoding parameters based on video content characteristics. However, existing CAE methods are often tightly coupled with specific encoding strategies, leading to inflexibility. In this paper, we propose a model that predicts both RF-quality and RF-bitrate curves, which can be utilized to derive a comprehensive bitrate-quality curve. This approach facilitates flexible adjustments to the encoding strategy without necessitating model retraining. The model leverages codec features, content features, and anchor features to predict the bitrate-quality curve accurately. Additionally, we introduce an anchor suspension method to enhance prediction accuracy. Experiments confirm that the actual quality metric (VMAF) of the compressed video stays within 1 of the target, achieving an accuracy of 99.14%. By incorporating our quality improvement strategy with the rate-quality curve prediction model, we conducted online A/B tests, obtaining both +0.107% improvements in video views and video completions and +0.064% app duration time. Our model has been deployed on the Xiaohongshu App.

There has been much recent interest in the regulation of AI. We argue for a view based on civil-rights legislation, built on the notions of equal treatment and equal impact. In a closed-loop view of the AI system and its users, the equal treatment concerns one pass through the loop. Equal impact, in our view, concerns the long-run average behaviour across repeated interactions. In order to establish the existence of the average and its properties, one needs to study the ergodic properties of the closed-loop and its unique stationary measure.

Scenario-Guided LLM-based Mobile App GUI TestingShengcheng Yu, Yuchen Ling, Chunrong Fang et al.
The assurance of mobile app GUI has become increasingly important, as the GUI serves as the primary medium of interaction between users and apps. Although numerous automated GUI testing approaches have been developed with diverse strategies, a substantial gap remains between these approaches and the underlying app business logic. Most existing approaches focus on general exploration rather than the completion of specific testing scenarios, often resulting in missed coverage of critical functionalities. Inspired by the manual testing process, which treats business logic, driven testing scenarios as the fundamental unit of testing, this paper introduces an approach that leverages large language models (LLMs) to comprehend the semantics expressed in app GUIs and their contextual relevance to given testing scenarios. Building upon this capability, we propose ScenGen, a novel scenario-guided LLM-based GUI testing framework that employs a multi-agent collaboration mechanism to simulate and automate the phases of manual testing. ScenGen integrates five agents. The Observer perceives the app GUI state by extracting and structuring GUI widgets and layouts, thereby interpreting the semantic information presented in the GUI. This information is then passed to the Decider, which makes scenario-driven decisions with the guidance of LLMs to identify target widgets and determine appropriate actions toward fulfilling specific testing goals. The Executor executes the decided operations on the app, while the Supervisor verifies whether the execution results align with the intended testing scenario completion, ensuring traceability and consistency in test generation and execution. Finally, the Recorder records the corresponding GUI operations into the context memory as a knowledge base for subsequent decision-making and concurrently monitors runtime bug occurrences.

The growing adoption of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) presents a transformative opportunity for revolutionizing transportation energy systems. The shift towards electrifying transportation aims to curb environmental concerns related to fossil fuel consumption. This necessitates efficient energy management systems (EMS) to optimize energy efficiency. The evolution of EMS from HEVs to connected hybrid electric vehicles (CHEVs) represent a pivotal shift. For HEVs, EMS now confronts the intricate energy cooperation requirements of CHEVs, necessitating advanced algorithms for route optimization, charging coordination, and load distribution. Challenges persist in both domains, including optimal energy utilization for HEVs, and cooperative eco-driving control (CED) for CHEVs across diverse vehicle types. Reinforcement learning (RL) stands out as a promising tool for addressing these challenges. Specifically, within the realm of CHEVs, the application of multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) emerges as a powerful approach for effectively tackling the intricacies of CED control. Despite extensive research, few reviews span from individual vehicles to multi-vehicle scenarios. This review bridges the gap, highlighting challenges, advancements, and potential contributions of RL-based solutions for future sustainable transportation systems.

Fairness in Forecasting of Observations of Linear Dynamical SystemsQuan Zhou, Jakub Marecek, Robert N. Shorten
In machine learning, training data often capture the behaviour of multiple subgroups of some underlying human population. This behaviour can often be modelled as observations of an unknown dynamical system with an unobserved state. When the training data for the subgroups are not controlled carefully, however, under-representation bias arises. To counter under-representation bias, we introduce two natural notions of fairness in time-series forecasting problems: subgroup fairness and instantaneous fairness. These notions extend predictive parity to the learning of dynamical systems. We also show globally convergent methods for the fairness-constrained learning problems using hierarchies of convexifications of non-commutative polynomial optimisation problems. We also show that by exploiting sparsity in the convexifications, we can reduce the run time of our methods considerably. Our empirical results on a biased data set motivated by insurance applications and the well-known COMPAS data set demonstrate the efficacy of our methods.

Empirical Analysis of AI-based Energy Management in Electric Vehicles: A Case Study on Reinforcement LearningJincheng Hu, Yang Lin, Jihao Li et al.
Reinforcement learning-based (RL-based) energy management strategy (EMS) is considered a promising solution for the energy management of electric vehicles with multiple power sources. It has been shown to outperform conventional methods in energy management problems regarding energy-saving and real-time performance. However, previous studies have not systematically examined the essential elements of RL-based EMS. This paper presents an empirical analysis of RL-based EMS in a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). The empirical analysis is developed in four aspects: algorithm, perception and decision granularity, hyperparameters, and reward function. The results show that the Off-policy algorithm effectively develops a more fuel-efficient solution within the complete driving cycle compared with other algorithms. Improving the perception and decision granularity does not produce a more desirable energy-saving solution but better balances battery power and fuel consumption. The equivalent energy optimization objective based on the instantaneous state of charge (SOC) variation is parameter sensitive and can help RL-EMSs to achieve more efficient energy-cost strategies.

Energy Management of Multi-mode Hybrid Electric Vehicles based on Hand-shaking Multi-agent LearningMin Hua, Zhi Li, Quan Zhou
The future transportation system will be a multi-agent network where connected AI agents can work together to address the grand challenges in our age, e.g., mitigation of real-world driving energy consumption. Distinguished from the existing research on vehicle energy management, which decoupled multiple inputs and multiple outputs (MIMO) control into single-output(MISO) control, this paper studied a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) framework to deal with multiple control outputs simultaneously. A new hand-shaking strategy is proposed for the DRL agents by introducing an independence ratio, and a parametric study is conducted to obtain the best setting for the MADRL framework. The study suggested that the MADRL with an independence ratio of 0.2 is the best, and more than 2.4% of energy can be saved over the conventional DRL framework.

Closed-Loop Sim-to-Real Reinforcement Learning for Deformable Microfiber Shape ControlAlessandro Amici, Houari Bettahar, Veeti Jaakkola et al.
Autonomous contact-based micromanipulation is challenging because surface and interfacial interactions at the microscale are difficult to model accurately, limiting the use of conventional model-based control and sim-to-real learning. We present a closed-loop sim-to-real reinforcement learning (RL) approach for microfiber shape control on a surface. The central idea is to train geometric shape regulation in a simplified frictionless simulator and rely on real-time visual feedback during deployment to iteratively correct the observed effects of unmodeled surface interactions. An RL policy trained entirely in simulation is transferred directly to a physical dual-gripper micromanipulation system operating at 40 Hz, without retraining or domain adaptation. Using silk microfibers as a testbed, the policy achieves a mean point-wise shape error of 270 $\pm$ 80 $μ$m across twenty-four diverse initial configurations. Across nine specimens covering all combinations of three fiber diameters (50, 80, and 120 $μ$m) and three manipulated lengths (10 mm, 15mm, and 20 mm), the same policy achieves sub-millimeter final shape error without any retraining or retuning. These results show that a policy learned in a simplified simulator can achieve repeatable real-world microfiber shape regulation under surface contact, provided that the task-relevant effects of the sim-to-real mismatch remain observable and correctable within the closed feedback loop.

Clustering of time series is a well-studied problem, with applications ranging from quantitative, personalized models of metabolism obtained from metabolite concentrations to state discrimination in quantum information theory. We consider a variant, where given a set of trajectories and a number of parts, we jointly partition the set of trajectories and learn linear dynamical system (LDS) models for each part, so as to minimize the maximum error across all the models. We present globally convergent methods and EM heuristics, accompanied by promising computational results. The key highlight of this method is that it does not require a predefined hidden state dimension but instead provides an upper bound. Additionally, it offers guidance for determining regularization in the system identification.

CaseGen: A Benchmark for Multi-Stage Legal Case Documents GenerationHaitao Li, Jiaying Ye, Yiran Hu et al.
Legal case documents play a critical role in judicial proceedings. As the number of cases continues to rise, the reliance on manual drafting of legal case documents is facing increasing pressure and challenges. The development of large language models (LLMs) offers a promising solution for automating document generation. However, existing benchmarks fail to fully capture the complexities involved in drafting legal case documents in real-world scenarios. To address this gap, we introduce CaseGen, the benchmark for multi-stage legal case documents generation in the Chinese legal domain. CaseGen is based on 500 real case samples annotated by legal experts and covers seven essential case sections. It supports four key tasks: drafting defense statements, writing trial facts, composing legal reasoning, and generating judgment results. To the best of our knowledge, CaseGen is the first benchmark designed to evaluate LLMs in the context of legal case document generation. To ensure an accurate and comprehensive evaluation, we design the LLM-as-a-judge evaluation framework and validate its effectiveness through human annotations. We evaluate several widely used general-domain LLMs and legal-specific LLMs, highlighting their limitations in case document generation and pinpointing areas for potential improvement. This work marks a step toward a more effective framework for automating legal case documents drafting, paving the way for the reliable application of AI in the legal field. Fairness holds a pivotal role in the realm of machine learning, particularly when it comes to addressing groups categorised by protected attributes, e.g., gender, race. Prevailing algorithms in fair learning predominantly hinge on accessibility or estimations of these protected attributes, at least in the training process. We design a single group-blind projection map that aligns the feature distributions of both groups in the source data, achieving (demographic) group parity, without requiring values of the protected attribute for individual samples in the computation of the map, as well as its use. Instead, our approach utilises the feature distributions of the privileged and unprivileged groups in a boarder population and the essential assumption that the source data are unbiased representation of the population. We present numerical results on synthetic data and real data.

KVPruner: Structural Pruning for Faster and Memory-Efficient Large Language ModelsBo Lv, Quan Zhou, Xuanang Ding et al.
The bottleneck associated with the key-value(KV) cache presents a significant challenge during the inference processes of large language models. While depth pruning accelerates inference, it requires extensive recovery training, which can take up to two weeks. On the other hand, width pruning retains much of the performance but offers slight speed gains. To tackle these challenges, we propose KVPruner to improve model efficiency while maintaining performance. Our method uses global perplexity-based analysis to determine the importance ratio for each block and provides multiple strategies to prune non-essential KV channels within blocks. Compared to the original model, KVPruner reduces runtime memory usage by 50% and boosts throughput by over 35%. Additionally, our method requires only two hours of LoRA fine-tuning on small datasets to recover most of the performance.

Explore and Establish Synergistic Effects Between Weight Pruning and Coreset Selection in Neural Network TrainingWeilin Wan, Fan Yi, Weizhong Zhang et al.
Modern deep neural networks rely heavily on massive model weights and training samples, incurring substantial computational costs. Weight pruning and coreset selection are two emerging paradigms proposed to improve computational efficiency. In this paper, we first explore the interplay between redundant weights and training samples through a transparent analysis: redundant samples, particularly noisy ones, cause model weights to become unnecessarily overtuned to fit them, complicating the identification of irrelevant weights during pruning; conversely, irrelevant weights tend to overfit noisy data, undermining coreset selection effectiveness. To further investigate and harness this interplay in deep learning, we develop a Simultaneous Weight and Sample Tailoring mechanism (SWaST) that alternately performs weight pruning and coreset selection to establish a synergistic effect in training. During this investigation, we observe that when simultaneously removing a large number of weights and samples, a phenomenon we term critical double-loss can occur, where important weights and their supportive samples are mistakenly eliminated at the same time, leading to model instability and nearly irreversible degradation that cannot be recovered in subsequent training. Unlike classic machine learning models, this issue can arise in deep learning due to the lack of theoretical guarantees on the correctness of weight pruning and coreset selection, which explains why these paradigms are often developed independently. We mitigate this by integrating a state preservation mechanism into SWaST, enabling stable joint optimization. Extensive experiments reveal a strong synergy between pruning and coreset selection across varying prune rates and coreset sizes, delivering accuracy boosts of up to 17.83% alongside 10% to 90% FLOPs reductions.

Dynamic Contrastive Learning for Hierarchical Retrieval: A Case Study of Distance-Aware Cross-View Geo-LocalizationSuofei Zhang, Xinxin Wang, Xiaofu Wu et al.
Existing deep learning-based cross-view geo-localization methods primarily focus on improving the accuracy of cross-domain image matching, rather than enabling models to comprehensively capture contextual information around the target and minimize the cost of localization errors. To support systematic research into this Distance-Aware Cross-View Geo-Localization (DACVGL) problem, we construct Distance-Aware Campus (DA-Campus), the first benchmark that pairs multi-view imagery with precise distance annotations across three spatial resolutions. Based on DA-Campus, we formulate DACVGL as a hierarchical retrieval problem across different domains. Our study further reveals that, due to the inherent complexity of spatial relationships among buildings, this problem can only be addressed via a contrastive learning paradigm, rather than conventional metric learning. To tackle this challenge, we propose Dynamic Contrastive Learning (DyCL), a novel framework that progressively aligns feature representations according to hierarchical spatial margins. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DyCL is highly complementary to existing multi-scale metric learning methods and yields substantial improvements in both hierarchical retrieval performance and overall cross-view geo-localization accuracy. Targeted False Positive Synthesis via Detector-guided Adversarial Diffusion Attacker for Robust Polyp DetectionQuan Zhou, Gan Luo, Qiang Hu et al.
Polyp detection is crucial for colorectal cancer screening, yet existing models are limited by the scale and diversity of available data. While generative models show promise for data augmentation, current methods mainly focus on enhancing polyp diversity, often overlooking the critical issue of false positives. In this paper, we address this gap by proposing an adversarial diffusion framework to synthesize high-value false positives. The extensive variability of negative backgrounds presents a significant challenge in false positive synthesis. To overcome this, we introduce two key innovations: First, we design a regional noise matching strategy to construct a negative synthesis space using polyp detection datasets. This strategy trains a negative-centric diffusion model by masking polyp regions, ensuring the model focuses exclusively on learning diverse background patterns. Second, we introduce the Detector-guided Adversarial Diffusion Attacker (DADA) module, which perturbs the negative synthesis process to disrupt a pre-trained detector's decision, guiding the negative-centric diffusion model to generate high-value, detector-confusing false positives instead of low-value, ordinary backgrounds. Our approach is the first to apply adversarial diffusion to lesion detection, establishing a new paradigm for targeted false positive synthesis and paving the way for more reliable clinical applications in colorectal cancer screening. Extensive results on public and in-house datasets verify the superiority of our method over the current state-of-the-arts, with our synthesized data improving the detectors by at least 2.6% and 2.7% in F1-score, respectively, over the baselines. YUNet: Improved YOLOv11 Network for Skyline DetectionGang Yang, Miao Wang, Quan Zhou et al.
Skyline detection plays an important role in geolocalizaion, flight control, visual navigation, port security, etc. The appearance of the sky and non-sky areas are variable, because of different weather or illumination environment, which brings challenges to skyline detection. In this research, we proposed the YUNet algorithm, which improved the YOLOv11 architecture to segment the sky region and extract the skyline in complicated and variable circumstances. To improve the ability of multi-scale and large range contextual feature fusion, the YOLOv11 architecture is extended as an UNet-like architecture, consisting of an encoder, neck and decoder submodule. The encoder extracts the multi-scale features from the given images. The neck makes fusion of these multi-scale features. The decoder applies the fused features to complete the prediction rebuilding. To validate the proposed approach, the YUNet was tested on Skyfinder and CH1 datasets for segmentation and skyline detection respectively. Our test shows that the IoU of YUnet segmentation can reach 0.9858, and the average error of YUnet skyline detection is just 1.36 pixels. FPB: Feature Pyramid Branch for Person Re-IdentificationSuofei Zhang, Zirui Yin, Xiofu Wu et al.
High performance person Re-Identification (Re-ID) requires the model to focus on both global silhouette and local details of pedestrian. To extract such more representative features, an effective way is to exploit deep models with multiple branches. However, most multi-branch based methods implemented by duplication of part backbone structure normally lead to severe increase of computational cost. In this paper, we propose a lightweight Feature Pyramid Branch (FPB) to extract features from different layers of networks and aggregate them in a bidirectional pyramid structure. Cooperated by attention modules and our proposed cross orthogonality regularization, FPB significantly prompts the performance of backbone network by only introducing less than 1.5M extra parameters. Extensive experimental results on standard benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed FPB based model outperforms state-of-the-art methods with obvious margin as well as much less model complexity. FPB borrows the idea of the Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) from prevailing object detection methods. To our best knowledge, it is the first successful application of similar structure in person Re-ID tasks, which empirically proves that pyramid network as affiliated branch could be a potential structure in related feature embedding models. A Reduction of the Elastic Net to Support Vector Machines with an Application to GPU ComputingQuan Zhou, Wenlin Chen, Shiji Song et al.
The past years have witnessed many dedicated open-source projects that built and maintain implementations of Support Vector Machines (SVM), parallelized for GPU, multi-core CPUs and distributed systems. Up to this point, no comparable effort has been made to parallelize the Elastic Net, despite its popularity in many high impact applications, including genetics, neuroscience and systems biology. The first contribution in this paper is of theoretical nature. We establish a tight link between two seemingly different algorithms and prove that Elastic Net regression can be reduced to SVM with squared hinge loss classification. Our second contribution is to derive a practical algorithm based on this reduction. The reduction enables us to utilize prior efforts in speeding up and parallelizing SVMs to obtain a highly optimized and parallel solver for the Elastic Net and Lasso. With a simple wrapper, consisting of only 11 lines of MATLAB code, we obtain an Elastic Net implementation that naturally utilizes GPU and multi-core CPUs. We demonstrate on twelve real world data sets, that our algorithm yields identical results as the popular (and highly optimized) glmnet implementation but is one or several orders of magnitude faster.

DCP-CLIP:A Coarse-to-Fine Framework for Open-Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation with Dual InteractionJing Wang, Huimin Shi, Quan Zhou et al.
The recent years have witnessed the remarkable development for open-vocabulary semantic segmentation (OVSS) using visual-language foundation models, yet still suffer from following fundamental challenges: (1) insufficient cross-modal communications between textual and visual spaces, and (2) significant computational costs from the interactions with massive number of categories. To address these issues, this paper describes a novel coarse-to-fine framework, called DCP-CLIP, for OVSS. Unlike prior efforts that mainly relied on pre-established category content and the inherent spatial-class interaction capability of CLIP, we dynamic constructing category-relevant textual features and explicitly models dual interactions between spatial image features and textual class semantics. Specifically, we first leverage CLIP's open-vocabulary recognition capability to identify semantic categories relevant to the image context, upon which we dynamically generate corresponding textual features to serve as initial textual guidance. Subsequently, we conduct a coarse segmentation by cross-modally integrating semantic information from textual guidance into the visual representations and achieve refined segmentation by integrating spatially enriched features from the encoder to recover fine-grained details and enhance spatial resolution. In final, we leverage spatial information from the segmentation side to refine category predictions for each mask, facilitating more precise semantic labeling. Experiments on multiple OVSS benchmarks demonstrate that DCP-CLIP outperforms existing methods by delivering both higher accuracy and greater efficiency.

Filament: Denning-Style Information Flow Control for RustJeffrey C. Ching, Quan Zhou, Danfeng Zhang
Existing language-based information-flow control (IFC) tools face a fundamental tension: Denning-style systems that track explicit and implicit flows at the variable level typically require compiler modifications, while more coarse-grained approaches, including recent work Cocoon, avoid compiler changes but impose more restrictive programming models. We present Filament, a Denning-style static IFC library for Rust that requires no compiler modifications. Filament addresses three key challenges in building a practical IFC library for Rust. First, it enables fine-grained explicit-flow checking with minimal annotation overhead by leveraging Rust's type inference. Second, it introduces pc_block!, a lightweight construct for enforcing implicit flows via a compile-time program counter label, without requiring compiler support. Third, it provides fcall! and mcall! macros to support seamless and safe interoperability with standard and third-party libraries. Our evaluation shows that Filament incurs negligible compile-time overhead and requires only modest annotations. Moreover, compared to Cocoon, Filament offers a more permissive programming model, reducing the need for frequent escape hatches that bypass security checks.

KAN-AD: Time Series Anomaly Detection with Kolmogorov-Arnold NetworksQuan Zhou, Changhua Pei, Fei Sun et al.
Time series anomaly detection (TSAD) underpins real-time monitoring in cloud services and web systems, allowing rapid identification of anomalies to prevent costly failures. Most TSAD methods driven by forecasting models tend to overfit by emphasizing minor fluctuations. Our analysis reveals that effective TSAD should focus on modeling "normal" behavior through smooth local patterns. To achieve this, we reformulate time series modeling as approximating the series with smooth univariate functions. The local smoothness of each univariate function ensures that the fitted time series remains resilient against local disturbances. However, a direct KAN implementation proves susceptible to these disturbances due to the inherently localized characteristics of B-spline functions. We thus propose KAN-AD, replacing B-splines with truncated Fourier expansions and introducing a novel lightweight learning mechanism that emphasizes global patterns while staying robust to local disturbances. On four popular TSAD benchmarks, KAN-AD achieves an average 15% improvement in detection accuracy (with peaks exceeding 27%) over state-of-the-art baselines. Remarkably, it requires fewer than 1,000 trainable parameters, resulting in a 50% faster inference speed compared to the original KAN, demonstrating the approach's efficiency and practical viability.

Soft-constrained Schrodinger Bridge: a Stochastic Control ApproachJhanvi Garg, Xianyang Zhang, Quan Zhou
Schrödinger bridge can be viewed as a continuous-time stochastic control problem where the goal is to find an optimally controlled diffusion process whose terminal distribution coincides with a pre-specified target distribution. We propose to generalize this problem by allowing the terminal distribution to differ from the target but penalizing the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the two distributions. We call this new control problem soft-constrained Schrödinger bridge (SSB). The main contribution of this work is a theoretical derivation of the solution to SSB, which shows that the terminal distribution of the optimally controlled process is a geometric mixture of the target and some other distribution. This result is further extended to a time series setting. One application is the development of robust generative diffusion models. We propose a score matching-based algorithm for sampling from geometric mixtures and showcase its use via a numerical example for the MNIST data set.

Out-of-Distribution Detection using Neural Activation PriorWeilin Wan, Weizhong Zhang, Quan Zhou et al.
Out-of-distribution detection (OOD) is a crucial technique for deploying machine learning models in the real world to handle the unseen scenarios. In this paper, we first propose a simple yet effective Neural Activation Prior (NAP) for OOD detection. Our neural activation prior is based on a key observation that, for a channel before the global pooling layer of a fully trained neural network, the probability of a few neurons being activated with a large response by an in-distribution (ID) sample is significantly higher than that by an OOD sample. An intuitive explanation is that for a model fully trained on ID dataset, each channel would play a role in detecting a certain pattern in the ID dataset, and a few neurons can be activated with a large response when the pattern is detected in an input sample. Then, a new scoring function based on this prior is proposed to highlight the role of these strongly activated neurons in OOD detection. Our approach is plug-and-play and does not lead to any performance degradation on ID data classification and requires no extra training or statistics from training or external datasets. Notice that previous methods primarily rely on post-global-pooling features of the neural networks, while the within-channel distribution information we leverage would be discarded by the global pooling operator. Consequently, our method is orthogonal to existing approaches and can be effectively combined with them in various applications. Experimental results show that our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on CIFAR benchmark and ImageNet dataset, which demonstrates the power of the proposed prior. Finally, we extend our method to Transformers and the experimental findings indicate that NAP can also significantly enhance the performance of OOD detection on Transformers, thereby demonstrating the broad applicability of this prior knowledge.

Representative Action Selection for Large Action Space: From Bandits to MDPsQuan Zhou, Shie Mannor
We study the problem of selecting a small, representative action subset from an extremely large action space shared across a family of reinforcement learning (RL) environments -- a fundamental challenge in applications like inventory management and recommendation systems, where direct learning over the entire space is intractable. Our goal is to identify a fixed subset of actions that, for every environment in the family, contains a near-optimal action, thereby enabling efficient learning without exhaustively evaluating all actions. This work extends our prior results for meta-bandits to the more general setting of Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). We prove that our existing algorithm achieves performance comparable to using the full action space. This theoretical guarantee is established under a relaxed, non-centered sub-Gaussian process model, which accommodates greater environmental heterogeneity. Consequently, our approach provides a computationally and sample-efficient solution for large-scale combinatorial decision-making under uncertainty.

ViTs: Teaching Machines to See Time Series Anomalies Like Human ExpertsZexin Wang, Changhua Pei, Yang Liu et al.
Web service administrators must ensure the stability of multiple systems by promptly detecting anomalies in Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Achieving the goal of "train once, infer across scenarios" remains a fundamental challenge for time series anomaly detection models. Beyond improving zero-shot generalization, such models must also flexibly handle sequences of varying lengths during inference, ranging from one hour to one week, without retraining. Conventional approaches rely on sliding-window encoding and self-supervised learning, which restrict inference to fixed-length inputs. Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable zero-shot capabilities across general domains. However, when applied to time series data, they face inherent limitations due to context length. To address this issue, we propose ViTs, a Vision-Language Model (VLM)-based framework that converts time series curves into visual representations. By rescaling time series images, temporal dependencies are preserved while maintaining a consistent input size, thereby enabling efficient processing of arbitrarily long sequences without context constraints. Training VLMs for this purpose introduces unique challenges, primarily due to the scarcity of aligned time series image-text data. To overcome this, we employ an evolutionary algorithm to automatically generate thousands of high-quality image-text pairs and design a three-stage training pipeline consisting of: (1) time series knowledge injection, (2) anomaly detection enhancement, and (3) anomaly reasoning refinement. Extensive experiments demonstrate that ViTs substantially enhance the ability of VLMs to understand and detect anomalies in time series data. As the reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) continue to advance, LLM-based agent systems offer advantages in flexibility and interpretability over traditional systems, garnering increasing attention. However, despite the widespread research interest and industrial application of agent systems, these systems, like their traditional counterparts, frequently encounter anomalies. These anomalies lead to instability and insecurity, hindering their further development. Therefore, a comprehensive and systematic approach to the operation and maintenance of agent systems is urgently needed. Unfortunately, current research on the operations of agent systems is sparse. To address this gap, we have undertaken a survey on agent system operations with the aim of establishing a clear framework for the field, defining the challenges, and facilitating further development. Specifically, this paper begins by systematically defining anomalies within agent systems, categorizing them into intra-agent anomalies and inter-agent anomalies. Next, we introduce a novel and comprehensive operational framework for agent systems, dubbed Agent System Operations (AgentOps). We provide detailed definitions and explanations of its four key stages: monitoring, anomaly detection, root cause analysis, and resolution.

We study the problem of selecting a subset from a large action space shared by a family of bandits, with the goal of achieving performance nearly matching that of using the full action space. We assume that similar actions tend to have related payoffs, modeled by a Gaussian process. To exploit this structure, we propose a simple epsilon-net algorithm to select a representative subset. We provide theoretical guarantees for its performance and compare it empirically to Thompson Sampling and Upper Confidence Bound.

Chemistry-aware battery degradation prediction under simulated real-world cyclic protocolsYuqi Li, Han Zhang, Xiaofan Gui et al.
Battery degradation is governed by complex and randomized cyclic conditions, yet existing modeling and prediction frameworks usually rely on rigid, unchanging protocols that fail to capture real-world dynamics. The stochastic electrical signals make such prediction extremely challenging, while, on the other hand, they provide abundant additional information, such as voltage fluctuations, which may probe the degradation mechanisms. Here, we present chemistry-aware battery degradation prediction under dynamic conditions with machine learning, which integrates hidden Markov processes for realistic power simulations, an automated batch-testing system that generates a large electrochemical dataset under randomized conditions, an interfacial chemistry database derived from high-throughput X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for mechanistic probing, and a machine learning model for prediction. By automatically constructing a polynomial-scale feature space from irregular electrochemical curves, our model accurately predicts both battery life and critical knee points. This feature space also predicts the composition of the solid electrolyte interphase, revealing six distinct failure mechanisms-demonstrating a viable approach to use electrical signals to infer interfacial chemistry. This work establishes a scalable and adaptive framework for integrating chemical engineering and data science to advance noninvasive diagnostics and optimize processes for more durable and sustainable energy storage technologies.

Optimisation Strategies for Ensuring Fairness in Machine Learning: With and Without DemographicsQuan Zhou
Ensuring fairness has emerged as one of the primary concerns in AI and its related algorithms. Over time, the field of machine learning fairness has evolved to address these issues. This paper provides an extensive overview of this field and introduces two formal frameworks to tackle open questions in machine learning fairness. In one framework, operator-valued optimisation and min-max objectives are employed to address unfairness in time-series problems. This approach showcases state-of-the-art performance on the notorious COMPAS benchmark dataset, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-world scenarios. In the second framework, the challenge of lacking sensitive attributes, such as gender and race, in commonly used datasets is addressed. This issue is particularly pressing because existing algorithms in this field predominantly rely on the availability or estimations of such attributes to assess and mitigate unfairness. Here, a framework for a group-blind bias-repair is introduced, aiming to mitigate bias without relying on sensitive attributes. The efficacy of this approach is showcased through analyses conducted on the Adult Census Income dataset. Additionally, detailed algorithmic analyses for both frameworks are provided, accompanied by convergence guarantees, ensuring the robustness and reliability of the proposed methodologies.

DRBANET: A Lightweight Dual-Resolution Network for Semantic Segmentation with Boundary AuxiliaryLinjie Wang, Quan Zhou, Chenfeng Jiang et al.
Due to the powerful ability to encode image details and semantics, many lightweight dual-resolution networks have been proposed in recent years. However, most of them ignore the benefit of boundary information. This paper introduces a lightweight dual-resolution network, called DRBANet, aiming to refine semantic segmentation results with the aid of boundary information. DRBANet adopts dual parallel architecture, including: high resolution branch (HRB) and low resolution branch (LRB). Specifically, HRB mainly consists of a set of Efficient Inverted Bottleneck Modules (EIBMs), which learn feature representations with larger receptive fields. LRB is composed of a series of EIBMs and an Extremely Lightweight Pyramid Pooling Module (ELPPM), where ELPPM is utilized to capture multi-scale context through hierarchical residual connections. Finally, a boundary supervision head is designed to capture object boundaries in HRB. Extensive experiments on Cityscapes and CamVid datasets demonstrate that our method achieves promising trade-off between segmentation accuracy and running efficiency.

DPNET: Dual-Path Network for Efficient Object Detectioj with Lightweight Self-AttentionHuimin Shi, Quan Zhou, Yinghao Ni et al.
Object detection often costs a considerable amount of computation to get satisfied performance, which is unfriendly to be deployed in edge devices. To address the trade-off between computational cost and detection accuracy, this paper presents a dual path network, named DPNet, for efficient object detection with lightweight self-attention. In backbone, a single input/output lightweight self-attention module (LSAM) is designed to encode global interactions between different positions. LSAM is also extended into a multiple-inputs version in feature pyramid network (FPN), which is employed to capture cross-resolution dependencies in two paths. Extensive experiments on the COCO dataset demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art detection results. More specifically, DPNet obtains 29.0% AP on COCO test-dev, with only 1.14 GFLOPs and 2.27M model size for a 320x320 image.

Furthermore, existing platforms only take expert data scientists into consideration, and thus they are inflexible for infrastructure administrators and non-user-friendly for citizen data scientists. We propose Submarine, a unified machine learning platform, to address the challenges.

Subgroup Fairness in Two-Sided MarketsQuan Zhou, Jakub Marecek, Robert N. Shorten
It is well known that two-sided markets are unfair in a number of ways. For instance, female workers at Uber earn less than their male colleagues per mile driven. Similar observations have been made for other minority subgroups in other two-sided markets. Here, we suggest a novel market-clearing mechanism for two-sided markets, which promotes equalisation of the pay per hour worked across multiple subgroups, as well as within each subgroup. In the process, we introduce a novel notion of subgroup fairness (which we call Inter-fairness), which can be combined with other notions of fairness within each subgroup (called Intra-fairness), and the utility for the customers (Customer-Care) in the objective of the market-clearing problem. While the novel non-linear terms in the objective complicate market clearing by making the problem non-convex, we show that a certain non-convex augmented Lagrangian relaxation can be approximated to any precision in time polynomial in the number of market participants using semi-definite programming. This makes it possible to implement the market-clearing mechanism efficiently. On the example of driver-ride assignment in an Uber-like system, we demonstrate the efficacy and scalability of the approach, and trade-offs between Inter- and Intra-fairness.

BubbleNet: Inferring micro-bubble dynamics with semi-physics-informed deep learningHanfeng Zhai, Quan Zhou, Guohui Hu
Micro-bubbles and bubbly flows are widely observed and applied in chemical engineering, medicine, involves deformation, rupture, and collision of bubbles, phase mixture, etc. We study bubble dynamics by setting up two numerical simulation cases: bubbly flow with a single bubble and multiple bubbles, both confined in the microchannel, with parameters corresponding to their medical backgrounds. Both the cases have their medical background applications. Multiphase flow simulation requires high computation accuracy due to possible component losses that may be caused by sparse meshing during the computation. Hence, data-driven methods can be adopted as an useful tool. Based on physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), we propose a novel deep learning framework BubbleNet, which entails three main parts: deep neural networks (DNN) with sub nets for predicting different physics fields; the semi-physics-informed part, with only the fluid continuum condition and the pressure Poisson equation $\mathcal{P}$ encoded within; the time discretized normalizer (TDN), an algorithm to normalize field data per time step before training. We apply the traditional DNN and our BubbleNet to train the coarsened simulation data and predict the physics fields of both the two bubbly flow cases. The BubbleNets are trained for both with and without $\mathcal{P}$, from which we conclude that the 'physics-informed' part can serve as inner supervision. Results indicate our framework can predict the physics fields more accurately, estimating the prediction absolute errors. Our deep learning predictions outperform traditional numerical methods computed with similar data density meshing. The proposed network can potentially be applied to many other engineering fields.

The Sensitivity of Word Embeddings-based Author Detection Models to Semantic-preserving Adversarial PerturbationsJeremiah Duncan, Fabian Fallas, Chris Gropp et al.
Authorship analysis is an important subject in the field of natural language processing. It allows the detection of the most likely writer of articles, news, books, or messages. This technique has multiple uses in tasks related to authorship attribution, detection of plagiarism, style analysis, sources of misinformation, etc. The focus of this paper is to explore the limitations and sensitiveness of established approaches to adversarial manipulations of inputs. To this end, and using those established techniques, we first developed an experimental frame-work for author detection and input perturbations. Next, we experimentally evaluated the performance of the authorship detection model to a collection of semantic-preserving adversarial perturbations of input narratives. Finally, we compare and analyze the effects of different perturbation strategies, input and model configurations, and the effects of these on the author detection model.

Ferrofluidic Manipulator: Automatic Manipulation of Non-magnetic Microparticles at Air-Ferrofluid InterfaceZoran Cenev, P. A. Diluka Harischandra, Seppo Nurmi et al.
Manipulation of small-scale matter is a fundamental topic in micro- and nanorobotics. Numerous magnetic robotic systems have been developed for the manipulation of microparticles in an ambient environment, liquid as well as on the air-liquid interface. These systems move intrinsically magnetic or magnetically tagged objects by inducing a magnetic torque or force. However, most of the materials found in nature are non-magnetic. Here, we report a ferrofluidic manipulator for automatic two-dimensional manipulation of non-magnetic objects floating on top of a ferrofluid. The manipulation system employs eight centimeter-scale solenoids, which can move non-magnetic particles by deforming the air-ferrofluid interface. Using linear programming, we can control the motion of the non-magnetic particles with a predefined trajectory of a line, square, and circle with a precision of 25.1+/-19.5 um, 34.4+/-28.4 um and 33.4+/-26.6 um, respectively. The ferrofluidic manipulator is versatile with the materials and the shapes of the objects under manipulation. We have successfully manipulated particles made of polyethylene, polystyrene, a silicon chip, and poppy and sesame seeds. This work shows a promising venue for the manipulation of living and non-living matter at the air-liquid interface.

The current optimization approaches of construction machinery are mainly based on internal sensors. However, the decision of a reasonable strategy is not only determined by its intrinsic signals, but also very strongly by environmental information, especially the terrain. Due to the dynamically changing of the construction site and the consequent absence of a high definition map, the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) offering the terrain information for construction machines is still challenging. Current SLAM technologies proposed for mobile machines are strongly dependent on costly or computationally expensive sensors, such as RTK GPS and cameras, so that commercial use is rare. In this study, we proposed an affordable SLAM method to create a multi-layer gird map for the construction site so that the machine can have the environmental information and be optimized accordingly. Concretely, after the machine passes by, we can get the local information and record it. Combining with positioning technology, we then create a map of the interesting places of the construction site. As a result of our research gathered from Gazebo, we showed that a suitable layout is the combination of 1 IMU and 2 differential GPS antennas using the unscented Kalman filter, which keeps the average distance error lower than 2m and the mapping error lower than 1.3% in the harsh environment. As an outlook, our SLAM technology provides the cornerstone to activate many efficiency improvement approaches.

In machine learning, training data often capture the behaviour of multiple subgroups of some underlying human population. When the amounts of training data for the subgroups are not controlled carefully, under-representation bias arises. We introduce two natural notions of subgroup fairness and instantaneous fairness to address such under-representation bias in time-series forecasting problems. In particular, we consider the subgroup-fair and instant-fair learning of a linear dynamical system (LDS) from multiple trajectories of varying lengths, and the associated forecasting problems. We provide globally convergent methods for the learning problems using hierarchies of convexifications of non-commutative polynomial optimisation problems. Our empirical results on a biased data set motivated by insurance applications and the well-known COMPAS data set demonstrate both the beneficial impact of fairness considerations on statistical performance and encouraging effects of exploiting sparsity on run time.

Bridge the Domain Gap Between Ultra-wide-field and Traditional Fundus Images via Adversarial Domain AdaptationLie Ju, Xin Wang, Quan Zhou et al.
For decades, advances in retinal imaging technology have enabled effective diagnosis and management of retinal disease using fundus cameras. Recently, ultra-wide-field (UWF) fundus imaging by Optos camera is gradually put into use because of its broader insights on fundus for some lesions that are not typically seen in traditional fundus images. Research on traditional fundus images is an active topic but studies on UWF fundus images are few. One of the most important reasons is that UWF fundus images are hard to obtain. In this paper, for the first time, we explore domain adaptation from the traditional fundus to UWF fundus images. We propose a flexible framework to bridge the domain gap between two domains and co-train a UWF fundus diagnosis model by pseudo-labelling and adversarial learning. We design a regularisation technique to regulate the domain adaptation. Also, we apply MixUp to overcome the over-fitting issue from incorrect generated pseudo-labels. Our experimental results on either single or both domains demonstrate that the proposed method can well adapt and transfer the knowledge from traditional fundus images to UWF fundus images and improve the performance of retinal disease recognition.

BiCANet: Bi-directional Contextual Aggregating Network for Image Semantic SegmentationQuan Zhou, Dechun Cong, Bin Kang et al.
Exploring contextual information in convolution neural networks (CNNs) has gained substantial attention in recent years for semantic segmentation. This paper introduces a Bi-directional Contextual Aggregating Network, called BiCANet, for semantic segmentation. Unlike previous approaches that encode context in feature space, BiCANet aggregates contextual cues from a categorical perspective, which is mainly consist of three parts: contextual condensed projection block (CCPB), bi-directional context interaction block (BCIB), and muti-scale contextual fusion block (MCFB). More specifically, CCPB learns a category-based mapping through a split-transform-merge architecture, which condenses contextual cues with different receptive fields from intermediate layer. BCIB, on the other hand, employs dense skipped-connections to enhance the class-level context exchanging. Finally, MCFB integrates multi-scale contextual cues by investigating short- and long-ranged spatial dependencies. To evaluate BiCANet, we have conducted extensive experiments on three semantic segmentation datasets: PASCAL VOC 2012, Cityscapes, and ADE20K. The experimental results demonstrate that BiCANet outperforms recent state-of-the-art networks without any postprocess techniques. Particularly, BiCANet achieves the mIoU score of 86.7%, 82.4% and 38.66% on PASCAL VOC 2012, Cityscapes and ADE20K testset, respectively.
