MindGPT: Interpreting What You See with Non-invasive Brain RecordingsJiaxuan Chen, Yu Qi, Yueming Wang et al.
Decoding of seen visual contents with non-invasive brain recordings has important scientific and practical values. Efforts have been made to recover the seen images from brain signals. However, most existing approaches cannot faithfully reflect the visual contents due to insufficient image quality or semantic mismatches. Compared with reconstructing pixel-level visual images, speaking is a more efficient and effective way to explain visual information. Here we introduce a non-invasive neural decoder, termed as MindGPT, which interprets perceived visual stimuli into natural languages from fMRI signals. Specifically, our model builds upon a visually guided neural encoder with a cross-attention mechanism, which permits us to guide latent neural representations towards a desired language semantic direction in an end-to-end manner by the collaborative use of the large language model GPT. By doing so, we found that the neural representations of the MindGPT are explainable, which can be used to evaluate the contributions of visual properties to language semantics. Our experiments show that the generated word sequences truthfully represented the visual information (with essential details) conveyed in the seen stimuli. The results also suggested that with respect to language decoding tasks, the higher visual cortex (HVC) is more semantically informative than the lower visual cortex (LVC), and using only the HVC can recover most of the semantic information. Multi-Depth Branch Network for Efficient Image Super-ResolutionHuiyuan Tian, Li Zhang, Shijian Li et al.
A longstanding challenge in Super-Resolution (SR) is how to efficiently enhance high-frequency details in Low-Resolution (LR) images while maintaining semantic coherence. This is particularly crucial in practical applications where SR models are often deployed on low-power devices. To address this issue, we propose an innovative asymmetric SR architecture featuring Multi-Depth Branch Module (MDBM). These MDBMs contain branches of different depths, designed to capture high- and low-frequency information simultaneously and efficiently. The hierarchical structure of MDBM allows the deeper branch to gradually accumulate fine-grained local details under the contextual guidance of the shallower branch. We visualize this process using feature maps, and further demonstrate the rationality and effectiveness of this design using proposed novel Fourier spectral analysis methods. Moreover, our model exhibits more significant spectral differentiation between branches than existing branch networks. This suggests that MDBM reduces feature redundancy and offers a more effective method for integrating high- and low-frequency information. Extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations on various datasets show that our model can generate structurally consistent and visually realistic HR images. Spiking NeRF: Representing the Real-World Geometry by a Discontinuous RepresentationZhanfeng Liao, Qian Zheng, Yan Liu et al.
A crucial reason for the success of existing NeRF-based methods is to build a neural density field for the geometry representation via multiple perceptron layers (MLPs). MLPs are continuous functions, however, real geometry or density field is frequently discontinuous at the interface between the air and the surface. Such a contrary brings the problem of unfaithful geometry representation. To this end, this paper proposes spiking NeRF, which leverages spiking neurons and a hybrid Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-Spiking Neural Network (SNN) framework to build a discontinuous density field for faithful geometry representation. Specifically, we first demonstrate the reason why continuous density fields will bring inaccuracy. Then, we propose to use the spiking neurons to build a discontinuous density field. We conduct a comprehensive analysis for the problem of existing spiking neuron models and then provide the numerical relationship between the parameter of the spiking neuron and the theoretical accuracy of geometry. Based on this, we propose a bounded spiking neuron to build the discontinuous density field. Our method achieves SOTA performance. EvoBrain: Continual Learning of EEG Foundation Models Across Heterogeneous BCI TasksYangxuan Zhou, Sha Zhao, Jiquan Wang et al.
Electroencephalography (EEG) is the cornerstone of non-invasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), yet conventional decoding relies on fragmented, task-specific architectures that severely limit cross-task scalability. While EEG foundation models pre-trained on massive corpora promise universal brain decoding, current post-training depends on task-isolated fine-tuning. This static paradigm restricts knowledge transfer across heterogeneous tasks, hinders model scalability, and incurs computational and storage overheads that scale linearly with task count. To overcome these bottlenecks, we formulate downstream adaptation as a cross-task continual learning problem and propose EvoBrain, a dynamic, task-aware continual learning framework for unified EEG decoding. EvoBrain addresses the plasticity-stability trade-off via two complementary components: (1) Neuro-Spectral Task Normalization (NSN) aligns incoming tasks with historical statistics while recalibrating spectral responses to handle distributional and neuro-spectral shifts; and (2) Response-Affinity Distillation (RAD), combined with time-dependent replay, preserves old-task response geometry and promotes selective knowledge transfer between spectrally compatible tasks, effectively mitigating forgetting. Extensive evaluations across six distinct BCI tasks demonstrate that EvoBrain consistently surpasses state-of-the-art methods across diverse foundation backbones, optimally balancing plasticity and stability. To our knowledge, this work pioneers cross-task continual learning in the EEG domain, advancing the realization of a unified, one-for-all brain decoding system.

Constructing Deep Spiking Neural Networks from Artificial Neural Networks with Knowledge DistillationQi Xu, Yaxin Li, Jiangrong Shen et al.
Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are well known as the brain-inspired models with high computing efficiency, due to a key component that they utilize spikes as information units, close to the biological neural systems. Although spiking based models are energy efficient by taking advantage of discrete spike signals, their performance is limited by current network structures and their training methods. As discrete signals, typical SNNs cannot apply the gradient descent rules directly into parameters adjustment as artificial neural networks (ANNs). Aiming at this limitation, here we propose a novel method of constructing deep SNN models with knowledge distillation (KD) that uses ANN as teacher model and SNN as student model. Through ANN-SNN joint training algorithm, the student SNN model can learn rich feature information from the teacher ANN model through the KD method, yet it avoids training SNN from scratch when communicating with non-differentiable spikes. Our method can not only build a more efficient deep spiking structure feasibly and reasonably, but use few time steps to train whole model compared to direct training or ANN to SNN methods. More importantly, it has a superb ability of noise immunity for various types of artificial noises and natural signals. The proposed novel method provides efficient ways to improve the performance of SNN through constructing deeper structures in a high-throughput fashion, with potential usage for light and efficient brain-inspired computing of practical scenarios.

Constrained Update Projection Approach to Safe Policy OptimizationLong Yang, Jiaming Ji, Juntao Dai et al.
Safe reinforcement learning (RL) studies problems where an intelligent agent has to not only maximize reward but also avoid exploring unsafe areas. In this study, we propose CUP, a novel policy optimization method based on Constrained Update Projection framework that enjoys rigorous safety guarantee. Central to our CUP development is the newly proposed surrogate functions along with the performance bound. Compared to previous safe RL methods, CUP enjoys the benefits of 1) CUP generalizes the surrogate functions to generalized advantage estimator (GAE), leading to strong empirical performance. 2) CUP unifies performance bounds, providing a better understanding and interpretability for some existing algorithms; 3) CUP provides a non-convex implementation via only first-order optimizers, which does not require any strong approximation on the convexity of the objectives. To validate our CUP method, we compared CUP against a comprehensive list of safe RL baselines on a wide range of tasks. A Human-Machine Joint Learning Framework to Boost Endogenous BCI TrainingHanwen Wang, Yu Qi, Lin Yao et al.
Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide a direct pathway from the brain to external devices and have demonstrated great potential for assistive and rehabilitation technologies. Endogenous BCIs based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, such as motor imagery (MI) BCIs, can provide some level of control. However, mastering spontaneous BCI control requires the users to generate discriminative and stable brain signal patterns by imagery, which is challenging and is usually achieved over a very long training time (weeks/months). Here, we propose a human-machine joint learning framework to boost the learning process in endogenous BCIs, by guiding the user to generate brain signals towards an optimal distribution estimated by the decoder, given the historical brain signals of the user. To this end, we firstly model the human-machine joint learning process in a uniform formulation. Then a human-machine joint learning framework is proposed: 1) for the human side, we model the learning process in a sequential trial-and-error scenario and propose a novel ``copy/new'' feedback paradigm to help shape the signal generation of the subject toward the optimal distribution; 2) for the machine side, we propose a novel adaptive learning algorithm to learn an optimal signal distribution along with the subject's learning process. Specifically, the decoder reweighs the brain signals generated by the subject to focus more on ``good'' samples to cope with the learning process of the subject. Online and psuedo-online BCI experiments with 18 healthy subjects demonstrated the advantages of the proposed joint learning process over co-adaptive approaches in both learning efficiency and effectiveness.

ESL-SNNs: An Evolutionary Structure Learning Strategy for Spiking Neural NetworksJiangrong Shen, Qi Xu, Jian K. Liu et al.
Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have manifested remarkable advantages in power consumption and event-driven property during the inference process. To take full advantage of low power consumption and improve the efficiency of these models further, the pruning methods have been explored to find sparse SNNs without redundancy connections after training. However, parameter redundancy still hinders the efficiency of SNNs during training. In the human brain, the rewiring process of neural networks is highly dynamic, while synaptic connections maintain relatively sparse during brain development. Inspired by this, here we propose an efficient evolutionary structure learning (ESL) framework for SNNs, named ESL-SNNs, to implement the sparse SNN training from scratch. The pruning and regeneration of synaptic connections in SNNs evolve dynamically during learning, yet keep the structural sparsity at a certain level. As a result, the ESL-SNNs can search for optimal sparse connectivity by exploring all possible parameters across time. Our experiments show that the proposed ESL-SNNs framework is able to learn SNNs with sparse structures effectively while reducing the limited accuracy. The ESL-SNNs achieve merely 0.28% accuracy loss with 10% connection density on the DVS-Cifar10 dataset. Our work presents a brand-new approach for sparse training of SNNs from scratch with biologically plausible evolutionary mechanisms, closing the gap in the expressibility between sparse training and dense training. Hence, it has great potential for SNN lightweight training and inference with low power consumption and small memory usage.

Multi-Level Firing with Spiking DS-ResNet: Enabling Better and Deeper Directly-Trained Spiking Neural NetworksLang Feng, Qianhui Liu, Huajin Tang et al.
Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are bio-inspired neural networks with asynchronous discrete and sparse characteristics, which have increasingly manifested their superiority in low energy consumption. Recent research is devoted to utilizing spatio-temporal information to directly train SNNs by backpropagation. However, the binary and non-differentiable properties of spike activities force directly trained SNNs to suffer from serious gradient vanishing and network degradation, which greatly limits the performance of directly trained SNNs and prevents them from going deeper. In this paper, we propose a multi-level firing (MLF) method based on the existing spatio-temporal back propagation (STBP) method, and spiking dormant-suppressed residual network (spiking DS-ResNet). MLF enables more efficient gradient propagation and the incremental expression ability of the neurons. Spiking DS-ResNet can efficiently perform identity mapping of discrete spikes, as well as provide a more suitable connection for gradient propagation in deep SNNs. With the proposed method, our model achieves superior performances on a non-neuromorphic dataset and two neuromorphic datasets with much fewer trainable parameters and demonstrates the great ability to combat the gradient vanishing and degradation problem in deep SNNs.

DANI-Net: Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo by Differentiable Shadow Handling, Anisotropic Reflectance Modeling, and Neural Inverse RenderingZongrui Li, Qian Zheng, Boxin Shi et al.
Uncalibrated photometric stereo (UPS) is challenging due to the inherent ambiguity brought by the unknown light. Although the ambiguity is alleviated on non-Lambertian objects, the problem is still difficult to solve for more general objects with complex shapes introducing irregular shadows and general materials with complex reflectance like anisotropic reflectance. To exploit cues from shadow and reflectance to solve UPS and improve performance on general materials, we propose DANI-Net, an inverse rendering framework with differentiable shadow handling and anisotropic reflectance modeling. Unlike most previous methods that use non-differentiable shadow maps and assume isotropic material, our network benefits from cues of shadow and anisotropic reflectance through two differentiable paths. Experiments on multiple real-world datasets demonstrate our superior and robust performance.

Biologically inspired structure learning with reverse knowledge distillation for spiking neural networksQi Xu, Yaxin Li, Xuanye Fang et al.
Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have superb characteristics in sensory information recognition tasks due to their biological plausibility. However, the performance of some current spiking-based models is limited by their structures which means either fully connected or too-deep structures bring too much redundancy. This redundancy from both connection and neurons is one of the key factors hindering the practical application of SNNs. Although Some pruning methods were proposed to tackle this problem, they normally ignored the fact the neural topology in the human brain could be adjusted dynamically. Inspired by this, this paper proposed an evolutionary-based structure construction method for constructing more reasonable SNNs. By integrating the knowledge distillation and connection pruning method, the synaptic connections in SNNs can be optimized dynamically to reach an optimal state. As a result, the structure of SNNs could not only absorb knowledge from the teacher model but also search for deep but sparse network topology. Experimental results on CIFAR100 and DVS-Gesture show that the proposed structure learning method can get pretty well performance while reducing the connection redundancy. The proposed method explores a novel dynamical way for structure learning from scratch in SNNs which could build a bridge to close the gap between deep learning and bio-inspired neural dynamics.

SceneCalib: Automatic Targetless Calibration of Cameras and Lidars in Autonomous DrivingAyon Sen, Gang Pan, Anton Mitrokhin et al.
Accurate camera-to-lidar calibration is a requirement for sensor data fusion in many 3D perception tasks. In this paper, we present SceneCalib, a novel method for simultaneous self-calibration of extrinsic and intrinsic parameters in a system containing multiple cameras and a lidar sensor. Existing methods typically require specially designed calibration targets and human operators, or they only attempt to solve for a subset of calibration parameters. We resolve these issues with a fully automatic method that requires no explicit correspondences between camera images and lidar point clouds, allowing for robustness to many outdoor environments. Furthermore, the full system is jointly calibrated with explicit cross-camera constraints to ensure that camera-to-camera and camera-to-lidar extrinsic parameters are consistent.

Dynamic Ensemble Bayesian Filter for Robust Control of a Human Brain-machine InterfaceYu Qi, Xinyun Zhu, Kedi Xu et al.
Objective: Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) aim to provide direct brain control of devices such as prostheses and computer cursors, which have demonstrated great potential for mobility restoration. One major limitation of current BMIs lies in the unstable performance in online control due to the variability of neural signals, which seriously hinders the clinical availability of BMIs. Method: To deal with the neural variability in online BMI control, we propose a dynamic ensemble Bayesian filter (DyEnsemble). DyEnsemble extends Bayesian filters with a dynamic measurement model, which adjusts its parameters in time adaptively with neural changes. This is achieved by learning a pool of candidate functions and dynamically weighting and assembling them according to neural signals. In this way, DyEnsemble copes with variability in signals and improves the robustness of online control. Results: Online BMI experiments with a human participant demonstrate that, compared with the velocity Kalman filter, DyEnsemble significantly improves the control accuracy (increases the success rate by 13.9% and reduces the reach time by 13.5% in the random target pursuit task) and robustness (performs more stably over different experiment days). Conclusion: Our results demonstrate the superiority of DyEnsemble in online BMI control. Significance: DyEnsemble frames a novel and flexible framework for robust neural decoding, which is beneficial to different neural decoding applications.

NeIF: Representing General Reflectance as Neural Intrinsics Fields for Uncalibrated Photometric StereoZongrui Li, Qian Zheng, Feishi Wang et al.
Uncalibrated photometric stereo (UPS) is challenging due to the inherent ambiguity brought by unknown light. Existing solutions alleviate the ambiguity by either explicitly associating reflectance to light conditions or resolving light conditions in a supervised manner. This paper establishes an implicit relation between light clues and light estimation and solves UPS in an unsupervised manner. The key idea is to represent the reflectance as four neural intrinsics fields, i.e., position, light, specular, and shadow, based on which the neural light field is implicitly associated with light clues of specular reflectance and cast shadow. The unsupervised, joint optimization of neural intrinsics fields can be free from training data bias as well as accumulating error, and fully exploits all observed pixel values for UPS. Our method achieves a superior performance advantage over state-of-the-art UPS methods on public and self-collected datasets, under regular and challenging setups. The code will be released soon.

TinyLight: Adaptive Traffic Signal Control on Devices with Extremely Limited ResourcesDong Xing, Qian Zheng, Qianhui Liu et al.
Recent advances in deep reinforcement learning (DRL) have largely promoted the performance of adaptive traffic signal control (ATSC). Nevertheless, regarding the implementation, most works are cumbersome in terms of storage and computation. This hinders their deployment on scenarios where resources are limited. In this work, we propose TinyLight, the first DRL-based ATSC model that is designed for devices with extremely limited resources. TinyLight first constructs a super-graph to associate a rich set of candidate features with a group of light-weighted network blocks. Then, to diminish the model's resource consumption, we ablate edges in the super-graph automatically with a novel entropy-minimized objective function. This enables TinyLight to work on a standalone microcontroller with merely 2KB RAM and 32KB ROM. We evaluate TinyLight on multiple road networks with real-world traffic demands. Toward Large-scale Spiking Neural Networks: A Comprehensive Survey and Future DirectionsYangfan Hu, Qian Zheng, Guoqi Li et al.
Deep learning has revolutionized artificial intelligence (AI), achieving remarkable progress in fields such as computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing. Moreover, the recent success of large language models (LLMs) has fueled a surge in research on large-scale neural networks. However, the escalating demand for computing resources and energy consumption has prompted the search for energy-efficient alternatives. Inspired by the human brain, spiking neural networks (SNNs) promise energy-efficient computation with event-driven spikes. To provide future directions toward building energy-efficient large SNN models, we present a survey of existing methods for developing deep spiking neural networks, with a focus on emerging Spiking Transformers. Our main contributions are as follows: (1) an overview of learning methods for deep spiking neural networks, categorized by ANN-to-SNN conversion and direct training with surrogate gradients; (2) an overview of network architectures for deep spiking neural networks, categorized by deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and Transformer architecture; and (3) a comprehensive comparison of state-of-the-art deep SNNs with a focus on emerging Spiking Transformers. We then further discuss and outline future directions toward large-scale SNNs.

EMOD: A Unified EEG Emotion Representation Framework Leveraging V-A Guided Contrastive LearningYuning Chen, Sha Zhao, Shijian Li et al.
Emotion recognition from EEG signals is essential for affective computing and has been widely explored using deep learning. While recent deep learning approaches have achieved strong performance on single EEG emotion datasets, their generalization across datasets remains limited due to the heterogeneity in annotation schemes and data formats. Existing models typically require dataset-specific architectures tailored to input structure and lack semantic alignment across diverse emotion labels. To address these challenges, we propose EMOD: A Unified EEG Emotion Representation Framework Leveraging Valence-Arousal (V-A) Guided Contrastive Learning. EMOD learns transferable and emotion-aware representations from heterogeneous datasets by bridging both semantic and structural gaps. Specifically, we project discrete and continuous emotion labels into a unified V-A space and formulate a soft-weighted supervised contrastive loss that encourages emotionally similar samples to cluster in the latent space. To accommodate variable EEG formats, EMOD employs a flexible backbone comprising a Triple-Domain Encoder followed by a Spatial-Temporal Transformer, enabling robust extraction and integration of temporal, spectral, and spatial features. We pretrain EMOD on 8 public EEG datasets and evaluate its performance on three benchmark datasets. Experimental results show that EMOD achieves the state-of-the-art performance, demonstrating strong adaptability and generalization across diverse EEG-based emotion recognition scenarios.

CBraMod: A Criss-Cross Brain Foundation Model for EEG DecodingJiquan Wang, Sha Zhao, Zhiling Luo et al.
Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive technique to measure and record brain electrical activity, widely used in various BCI and healthcare applications. Early EEG decoding methods rely on supervised learning, limited by specific tasks and datasets, hindering model performance and generalizability. With the success of large language models, there is a growing body of studies focusing on EEG foundation models. However, these studies still leave challenges: Firstly, most of existing EEG foundation models employ full EEG modeling strategy. It models the spatial and temporal dependencies between all EEG patches together, but ignores that the spatial and temporal dependencies are heterogeneous due to the unique structural characteristics of EEG signals. Secondly, existing EEG foundation models have limited generalizability on a wide range of downstream BCI tasks due to varying formats of EEG data, making it challenging to adapt to. To address these challenges, we propose a novel foundation model called CBraMod. Specifically, we devise a criss-cross transformer as the backbone to thoroughly leverage the structural characteristics of EEG signals, which can model spatial and temporal dependencies separately through two parallel attention mechanisms. And we utilize an asymmetric conditional positional encoding scheme which can encode positional information of EEG patches and be easily adapted to the EEG with diverse formats. CBraMod is pre-trained on a very large corpus of EEG through patch-based masked EEG reconstruction. We evaluate CBraMod on up to 10 downstream BCI tasks (12 public datasets). CBraMod achieves the state-of-the-art performance across the wide range of tasks, proving its strong capability and generalizability. UniSpike: Accelerating Spiking Neural Networks on Neuromorphic Systems via Eliminating Address RedundancyQinghui Xing, Zhuo Chen, Xin Du et al.
Many-core neuromorphic systems accelerate Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), yet their packet-based spike communication can spend substantial traffic and energy repeatedly transmitting destination addresses. This overhead is amplified by the small payload of spike packets: in representative workloads, duplicate address transmissions account for up to 49% of the total traffic. This paper presents UniSpike, a hardware-software co-design that removes address redundancy by aggregating spikes destined for the same core into compact packets. UniSpike combines destination-centric spike scheduling, lightweight runtime packet assembly hardware, and destination-aware SNN partitioning. Across diverse SNN workloads, UniSpike reduces traffic by 1.93$\times$ on average, delivering 1.77$\times$ speedup and 1.50$\times$ energy efficiency improvement over state-of-the-art designs.

FP3O: Enabling Proximal Policy Optimization in Multi-Agent Cooperation with Parameter-Sharing VersatilityLang Feng, Dong Xing, Junru Zhang et al.
Existing multi-agent PPO algorithms lack compatibility with different types of parameter sharing when extending the theoretical guarantee of PPO to cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). In this paper, we propose a novel and versatile multi-agent PPO algorithm for cooperative MARL to overcome this limitation. Our approach is achieved upon the proposed full-pipeline paradigm, which establishes multiple parallel optimization pipelines by employing various equivalent decompositions of the advantage function. This procedure successfully formulates the interconnections among agents in a more general manner, i.e., the interconnections among pipelines, making it compatible with diverse types of parameter sharing. We provide a solid theoretical foundation for policy improvement and subsequently develop a practical algorithm called Full-Pipeline PPO (FP3O) by several approximations. Empirical evaluations on Multi-Agent MuJoCo and StarCraftII tasks demonstrate that FP3O outperforms other strong baselines and exhibits remarkable versatility across various parameter-sharing configurations.

ActivityForensics: A Comprehensive Benchmark for Localizing Manipulated Activity in VideosPeijun Bao, Anwei Luo, Gang Pan et al.
Temporal forgery localization aims to temporally identify manipulated segments in videos. Most existing benchmarks focus on appearance-level forgeries, such as face swapping and object removal. However, recent advances in video generation have driven the emergence of activity-level forgeries that modify human actions to distort event semantics, resulting in highly deceptive forgeries that critically undermine media authenticity and public trust. To overcome this issue, we introduce ActivityForensics, the first large-scale benchmark for localizing manipulated activity in videos. It contains over 6K forged video segments that are seamlessly blended into the video context, rendering high visual consistency that makes them almost indistinguishable from authentic content to the human eye. We further propose Temporal Artifact Diffuser (TADiff), a simple yet effective baseline that exposes artifact cues through a diffusion-based feature regularizer. Based on ActivityForensics, we introduce comprehensive evaluation protocols covering intra-domain, cross-domain, and open-world settings, and benchmark a wide range of state-of-the-art forgery localizers to facilitate future research. Brain-CLIPLM: Decoding Compressed Semantic Representations in EEG for Language ReconstructionXiaoli Yang, Huiyuan Tian, Yurui Li et al.
Decoding natural language from non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) remains fundamentally limited by low signal-to-noise ratio and restricted information bandwidth. This raises a fundamental question regarding whether sentence-level linguistic structure can be reliably recovered from such signals. In this work, we suggest that this assumption may not hold under realistic information constraints, and instead propose a semantic compression hypothesis in which EEG signals encode a compressed set of semantic anchors rather than full linguistic structure. Under our new perspective, direct sentence reconstruction becomes an overparameterized objective relative to the intrinsic information capacity of EEG. To address this mismatch, we introduce Brain-CLIPLM, a two-stage framework that decomposes EEG-to-text decoding into semantic anchor extraction via contrastive learning and sentence reconstruction using a retrieval-grounded large language model (LLM) with Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning, following a granularity matching principle that aligns decoding complexity with neural information capacity. Evaluated on the Zurich Cognitive Language Processing Corpus, Brain-CLIPLM achieves 67.55\% top-5 and 85.00\% top-25 sentence retrieval accuracy, significantly outperforming direct decoding baseline, while cross-subject evaluation confirms robust generalization. Control analyses, including permutation testing, further demonstrate that EEG-derived representations carry sentence-specific information beyond language model priors. These results suggest that EEG-to-text decoding is better framed as recovering compressed semantic content rather than reconstructing full sentences, providing a biologically grounded and data-efficient pathway for non-invasive brain-computer interfaces.

Spin-UP: Spin Light for Natural Light Uncalibrated Photometric StereoZongrui Li, Zhan Lu, Haojie Yan et al.
Natural Light Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo (NaUPS) relieves the strict environment and light assumptions in classical Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo (UPS) methods. However, due to the intrinsic ill-posedness and high-dimensional ambiguities, addressing NaUPS is still an open question. Existing works impose strong assumptions on the environment lights and objects' material, restricting the effectiveness in more general scenarios. Alternatively, some methods leverage supervised learning with intricate models while lacking interpretability, resulting in a biased estimation. In this work, we proposed Spin Light Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo (Spin-UP), an unsupervised method to tackle NaUPS in various environment lights and objects. The proposed method uses a novel setup that captures the object's images on a rotatable platform, which mitigates NaUPS's ill-posedness by reducing unknowns and provides reliable priors to alleviate NaUPS's ambiguities. Leveraging neural inverse rendering and the proposed training strategies, Spin-UP recovers surface normals, environment light, and isotropic reflectance under complex natural light with low computational cost. Experiments have shown that Spin-UP outperforms other supervised / unsupervised NaUPS methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance on synthetic and real-world datasets. DeeperBrain: A Neuro-Grounded EEG Foundation Model Towards Universal BCIJiquan Wang, Sha Zhao, Yangxuan Zhou et al.
Electroencephalography (EEG) foundation models hold significant promise for universal Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). However, existing approaches often rely on end-to-end fine-tuning and exhibit limited efficacy under frozen-probing protocols, lacking the intrinsic universality required for broad generalization. This limitation stems from adapting general-purpose sequence architectures that overlook the biophysical and dynamical principles of neural activity. To bridge this gap, we propose DeeperBrain, a neuro-grounded foundation model integrating domain-specific inductive biases into its model design and learning objectives. Architecturally, DeeperBrain incorporates a volume conduction-aware channel encoding to model spatial mixing via 3D geometry, and a neurodynamics-aware temporal encoding capturing slow adaptations using oscillatory and exponential bases. For pretraining, we introduce a dual-objective strategy combining Masked EEG Reconstruction (MER) for local fidelity and Neurodynamics Statistics Prediction (NSP). NSP enforces alignment with macroscopic brain states by predicting interpretable order parameters, including spectral power, functional connectivity, cross-frequency coupling, and dynamic complexity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DeeperBrain achieves state-of-the-art or highly competitive performance under end-to-end fine-tuning. Crucially, it maintains superior efficacy under a rigorous frozen-probing protocol, verifying that embedding neuroscientific first principles endows learned representations with the intrinsic universality essential for universal BCI. Neural Architecture Search of Time-to-First-Spike-Coded Spiking Neural Networks for Efficient Eye-based Emotion RecognitionQianhui Liu, Jing Yang, Miao Yu et al.
Eye-based emotion recognition enables eyewear devices to perceive users' emotional states and support emotion-aware interaction. However, deploying such functionality on their resource-limited embedded hardware remains challenging. Time-to-first-spike (TTFS)-coded spiking neural networks (SNNs) offer a promising solution due to their extremely sparse and energy-efficient computation, where each neuron emits at most one binary spike. While prior works have primarily focused on improving TTFS SNN training algorithms, the role of network architecture has been largely overlooked. This is particularly critical, as spike timing in TTFS SNNs is tightly coupled with architectural design, and eye-based emotion recognition requires compact yet highly efficient networks. In this paper, we propose TNAS-ER, the first neural architecture search (NAS) framework tailored to TTFS SNNs for eye-based emotion recognition. TNAS-ER presents a novel ANN-assisted search strategy that leverages a ReLU-based ANN counterpart to guide architecture optimization and stabilize training of the TTFS SNN. TNAS-ER employs an evolutionary algorithm, with weighted and unweighted average recall jointly defined as fitness objectives for emotion recognition. Extensive experiments demonstrate that TNAS-ER achieves high recognition performance with significantly improved efficiency. Furthermore, we evaluate TNAS-ER on a neuromorphic hardware, confirming its superior energy efficiency and strong potential for real-world applications.

PP-FormulaNet: Bridging Accuracy and Efficiency in Advanced Formula RecognitionHongen Liu, Cheng Cui, Yuning Du et al.
Formula recognition is an important task in document intelligence. It involves converting mathematical expressions from document images into structured symbolic formats that computers can easily work with. LaTeX is the most common format used for this purpose. In this work, we present PP-FormulaNet, a state-of-the-art formula recognition model that excels in both accuracy and efficiency. To meet the diverse needs of applications, we have developed two specialized models: PP-FormulaNet-L, tailored for high-accuracy scenarios, and PP-FormulaNet-S, optimized for high-efficiency contexts. Our extensive evaluations reveal that PP-FormulaNet-L attains accuracy levels that surpass those of prominent models such as UniMERNet by a significant 6%. Conversely, PP-FormulaNet-S operates at speeds that are over 16 times faster. These advancements facilitate seamless integration of PP-FormulaNet into a broad spectrum of document processing environments that involve intricate mathematical formulas. Furthermore, we introduce a Formula Mining System, which is capable of extracting a vast amount of high-quality formula data. This system further enhances the robustness and applicability of our formula recognition model. EEGAgent: A Unified Framework for Automated EEG Analysis Using Large Language ModelsSha Zhao, Mingyi Peng, Haiteng Jiang et al.
Scalable and generalizable analysis of brain activity is essential for advancing both clinical diagnostics and cognitive research. Electroencephalography (EEG), a non-invasive modality with high temporal resolution, has been widely used for brain states analysis. However, most existing EEG models are usually tailored for individual specific tasks, limiting their utility in realistic scenarios where EEG analysis often involves multi-task and continuous reasoning. In this work, we introduce EEGAgent, a general-purpose framework that leverages large language models (LLMs) to schedule and plan multiple tools to automatically complete EEG-related tasks. EEGAgent is capable of performing the key functions: EEG basic information perception, spatiotemporal EEG exploration, EEG event detection, interaction with users, and EEG report generation. To realize these capabilities, we design a toolbox composed of different tools for EEG preprocessing, feature extraction, event detection, etc. These capabilities were evaluated on public datasets, and our EEGAgent can support flexible and interpretable EEG analysis, highlighting its potential for real-world clinical applications.

Mitigating Communication Costs in Neural Networks: The Role of Dendritic NonlinearityXundong Wu, Pengfei Zhao, Zilin Yu et al.
Our understanding of biological neuronal networks has profoundly influenced the development of artificial neural networks (ANNs). However, neurons utilized in ANNs differ considerably from their biological counterparts, primarily due to the absence of complex dendritic trees with local nonlinearities. Early studies have suggested that dendritic nonlinearities could substantially improve the learning capabilities of neural network models. In this study, we systematically examined the role of nonlinear dendrites within neural networks. Utilizing machine-learning methodologies, we assessed how dendritic nonlinearities influence neural network performance. Our findings demonstrate that dendritic nonlinearities do not substantially affect learning capacity; rather, their primary benefit lies in enabling network capacity expansion while minimizing communication costs through effective localized feature aggregation. This research provides critical insights with significant implications for designing future neural network accelerators aimed at reducing communication overhead during neural network training and inference.

Otters: An Energy-Efficient SpikingTransformer via Optical Time-to-First-Spike EncodingZhanglu Yan, Jiayi Mao, Qianhui Liu et al.
Spiking neural networks (SNNs) promise high energy efficiency, particularly with time-to-first-spike (TTFS) encoding, which maximizes sparsity by emitting at most one spike per neuron. However, such energy advantage is often unrealized because inference requires evaluating a temporal decay function and subsequent multiplication with the synaptic weights. This paper challenges this costly approach by repurposing a physical hardware `bug', namely, the natural signal decay in optoelectronic devices, as the core computation of TTFS. We fabricated a custom indium oxide optoelectronic synapse, showing how its natural physical decay directly implements the required temporal function. By treating the device's analog output as the fused product of the synaptic weight and temporal decay, optoelectronic synaptic TTFS (named Otters) eliminates these expensive digital operations. To use the Otters paradigm in complex architectures like the transformer, which are challenging to train directly due to the sparsity issue, we introduce a novel quantized neural network-to-SNN conversion algorithm. This complete hardware-software co-design enables our model to achieve state-of-the-art accuracy across seven GLUE benchmark datasets and demonstrates a 1.77$\times$ improvement in energy efficiency over previous leading SNNs, based on a comprehensive analysis of compute, data movement, and memory access costs using energy measurements from a commercial 22nm process. Our work thus establishes a new paradigm for energy-efficient SNNs, translating fundamental device physics directly into powerful computational primitives. All codes and data are open source.

SpectralKD: A Unified Framework for Interpreting and Distilling Vision Transformers via Spectral AnalysisHuiyuan Tian, Bonan Xu, Shijian Li et al.
Knowledge Distillation (KD) has achieved widespread success in compressing large Vision Transformers (ViTs), but a unified theoretical framework for both ViTs and KD is still lacking. In this paper, we propose SpectralKD, a novel unified analytical framework that offers deeper insights into ViTs and optimizes KD via spectral analysis. Our model-wise analysis reveals that CaiT concentrates information in their first and last few layers, informing optimal layer selection for KD. Surprisingly, our layer-wise analysis discovers that Swin Transformer and CaiT exhibit similar spectral encoding patterns despite their architectural differences, leading to feature map alignment guideline. Building on these insights, we propose a simple yet effective spectral alignment method for KD. Benefiting from the deeper understanding by above analysis results, even such a simple strategy achieves state-of-the-art performance on ImageNet-1K without introducing any trainable parameters, improving DeiT-Tiny by $+5.2\%$ and Swin-Tiny by $+1.4\%$ in top-1 accuracy. Furthermore, our post-training analysis reveals that distilled students can reproduce spectral patterns similar to their teachers, opening a new area we term ``distillation dynamics". Sewer Image Super-Resolution with Depth Priors and Its Lightweight NetworkGang Pan, Chen Wang, Zhijie Sui et al.
The Quick-view (QV) technique serves as a primary method for detecting defects within sewerage systems. However, the effectiveness of QV is impeded by the limited visual range of its hardware, resulting in suboptimal image quality for distant portions of the sewer network. Image super-resolution is an effective way to improve image quality and has been applied in a variety of scenes. However, research on super-resolution for sewer images remains considerably unexplored. In response, this study leverages the inherent depth relationships present within QV images and introduces a novel Depth-guided, Reference-based Super-Resolution framework denoted as DSRNet. It comprises two core components: a depth extraction module and a depth information matching module (DMM). DSRNet utilizes the adjacent frames of the low-resolution image as reference images and helps them recover texture information based on the correlation. By combining these modules, the integration of depth priors significantly enhances both visual quality and performance benchmarks. Besides, in pursuit of computational efficiency and compactness, a super-resolution knowledge distillation model based on an attention mechanism is introduced. This mechanism facilitates the acquisition of feature similarity between a more complex teacher model and a streamlined student model, with the latter being a lightweight version of DSRNet. Experimental results demonstrate that DSRNet significantly improves PSNR and SSIM compared with other methods. This study also conducts experiments on sewer defect semantic segmentation, object detection, and classification on the Pipe dataset and Sewer-ML dataset. Experiments show that the method can improve the performance of low-resolution sewer images in these tasks.

EReCu: Pseudo-label Evolution Fusion and Refinement with Multi-Cue Learning for Unsupervised Camouflage DetectionShuo Jiang, Gaojia Zhang, Min Tan et al.
Unsupervised Camouflaged Object Detection (UCOD) remains a challenging task due to the high intrinsic similarity between target objects and their surroundings, as well as the reliance on noisy pseudo-labels that hinder fine-grained texture learning. While existing refinement strategies aim to alleviate label noise, they often overlook intrinsic perceptual cues, leading to boundary overflow and structural ambiguity. In contrast, learning without pseudo-label guidance yields coarse features with significant detail loss. To address these issues, we propose a unified UCOD framework that enhances both the reliability of pseudo-labels and the fidelity of features. Our approach introduces the Multi-Cue Native Perception module, which extracts intrinsic visual priors by integrating low-level texture cues with mid-level semantics, enabling precise alignment between masks and native object information. Additionally, Pseudo-Label Evolution Fusion intelligently refines labels through teacher-student interaction and utilizes depthwise separable convolution for efficient semantic denoising. It also incorporates Spectral Tensor Attention Fusion to effectively balance semantic and structural information through compact spectral aggregation across multi-layer attention maps. Finally, Local Pseudo-Label Refinement plays a pivotal role in local detail optimization by leveraging attention diversity to restore fine textures and enhance boundary fidelity. Extensive experiments on multiple UCOD datasets demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance, characterized by superior detail perception, robust boundary alignment, and strong generalization under complex camouflage scenarios.

ALAM: Algebraically Consistent Latent Transitions for Vision-Language-Action ModelsZuojin Tang, Haoyun Liu, Xinyuan Chang et al.
Vision-language-action (VLA) models remain constrained by the scarcity of action-labeled robot data, whereas action-free videos provide abundant evidence of how the physical world changes. Latent action models offer a promising way to extract such priors from videos, but reconstruction-trained latent codes are not necessarily suitable for policy generation: they may predict future observations while lacking the structure needed to be reused or generated coherently with robot actions. We introduce ALAM (Algebraic Latent Action Model), an Algebraically Consistent Latent Action Model that turns temporal relations in action-free video into structural supervision. Given frame triplets, ALAM learns latent transitions that are grounded by reconstruction while being regularized by composition and reversal consistency, encouraging a locally additive transition space. For downstream VLA learning, we freeze the pretrained encoder and use its latent transition sequences as auxiliary generative targets, co-generated with robot actions under a joint flow-matching objective. This couples structured latent transitions with flow-based policy generation, allowing the policy to exploit ALAM's locally consistent transition geometry without requiring latent-to-action decoding. Representation probes show that ALAM reduces additivity and reversibility errors by 25-85 times over unstructured latent-action baselines and improves long-horizon cumulative reconstruction. When transferred to VLA policies, ALAM raises the average success rate from 47.9% to 85.0% on MetaWorld MT50 and from 94.1% to 98.1% on LIBERO, with consistent gains on real-world manipulation tasks. Ablations further confirm that the strongest improvements arise from the synergy between algebraically structured latent transitions and joint flow matching.

One Token Per Frame: Reconsidering Visual Bandwidth in World Models for VLA PolicyZuojin Tang, Shengchao Yuan, Xiaoxin Bai et al.
Vision-language-action (VLA) models increasingly rely on auxiliary world modules to plan over long horizons, yet how such modules should be parameterized on top of a pretrained VLA remains an open design question. Existing world-model-augmented VLAs typically pass the per-frame visual stream into the world module at high visual bandwidth and treat its rollout as a side product of action prediction; under a constrained adaptation budget on a frozen backbone, this leaves both the per-frame representation and the latent action coupling under-examined. We introduce OneWM-VLA, which compresses each view into a single semantic token per frame through an Adaptive Attention Pooling, and produces the resulting latent stream and the action trajectory under a single flow-matching objective rather than connecting them through a separate decoder. Empirically, we find that per-frame visual bandwidth can be reduced to a single token without compromising long-horizon performance under our setup. Trained with 14.71M LoRA parameters on a $π_0$ (2B) backbone, OneWM-VLA improves the average success rate from 47.9% to 61.3% on MetaWorld~MT50, reaches 95.6% on LIBERO-Long (vs.85.2% for $π_0$), and reaches 60.0% on the long-horizon deformable task Fold Cloth on a real Piper arm (vs.20.0% for $π_0$).

Semi-Supervised Pipe Video Temporal Defect Interval LocalizationZhu Huang, Gang Pan, Chao Kang et al.
In sewer pipe Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) inspection, accurate temporal defect localization is essential for effective defect classification, detection, segmentation and quantification. Industry standards typically do not require time-interval annotations, even though they are more informative than time-point annotations for defect localization, resulting in additional annotation costs when fully supervised methods are used. Additionally, differences in scene types and camera motion patterns between pipe inspections and Temporal Action Localization (TAL) hinder the effective transfer of point-supervised TAL methods. Therefore, this study introduces a Semi-supervised multi-Prototype-based method incorporating visual Odometry for enhanced attention guidance (PipeSPO). PipeSPO fully leverages unlabeled data through unsupervised pretext tasks and utilizes time-point annotated data with a weakly supervised multi-prototype-based method, relying on visual odometry features to capture camera pose information. Experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that PipeSPO achieves 41.89% average precision across Intersection over Union (IoU) thresholds of 0.1-0.7, improving by 8.14% over current state-of-the-art methods.

The Composite Task Challenge for Cooperative Multi-Agent Reinforcement LearningYurui Li, Yuxuan Chen, Li Zhang et al.
The significant role of division of labor (DOL) in promoting cooperation is widely recognized in real-world applications.Many cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) methods have incorporated the concept of DOL to improve cooperation among agents.However, the tasks used in existing testbeds typically correspond to tasks where DOL is often not a necessary feature for achieving optimal policies.Additionally, the full utilize of DOL concept in MARL methods remains unrealized due to the absence of appropriate tasks.To enhance the generality and applicability of MARL methods in real-world scenarios, there is a necessary to develop tasks that demand multi-agent DOL and cooperation.In this paper, we propose a series of tasks designed to meet these requirements, drawing on real-world rules as the guidance for their design.We guarantee that DOL and cooperation are necessary condition for completing tasks and introduce three factors to expand the diversity of proposed tasks to cover more realistic situations.We evaluate 10 cooperative MARL methods on the proposed tasks.The results indicate that all baselines perform poorly on these tasks.To further validate the solvability of these tasks, we also propose simplified variants of proposed tasks.Experimental results show that baselines are able to handle these simplified variants, providing evidence of the solvability of the proposed tasks.The source files is available at https://github.com/Yurui-Li/CTC.

CUP: A Conservative Update Policy Algorithm for Safe Reinforcement LearningLong Yang, Jiaming Ji, Juntao Dai et al.
Safe reinforcement learning (RL) is still very challenging since it requires the agent to consider both return maximization and safe exploration. In this paper, we propose CUP, a Conservative Update Policy algorithm with a theoretical safety guarantee. We derive the CUP based on the new proposed performance bounds and surrogate functions. Although using bounds as surrogate functions to design safe RL algorithms have appeared in some existing works, we develop them at least three aspects: (i) We provide a rigorous theoretical analysis to extend the surrogate functions to generalized advantage estimator (GAE). GAE significantly reduces variance empirically while maintaining a tolerable level of bias, which is an efficient step for us to design CUP; (ii) The proposed bounds are tighter than existing works, i.e., using the proposed bounds as surrogate functions are better local approximations to the objective and safety constraints. (iii) The proposed CUP provides a non-convex implementation via first-order optimizers, which does not depend on any convex approximation. Finally, extensive experiments show the effectiveness of CUP where the agent satisfies safe constraints. We have opened the source code of CUP at https://github.com/RL-boxes/Safe-RL.

Rethinking Sampling Strategies for Unsupervised Person Re-identificationXumeng Han, Xuehui Yu, Guorong Li et al.
Unsupervised person re-identification (re-ID) remains a challenging task. While extensive research has focused on the framework design and loss function, this paper shows that sampling strategy plays an equally important role. We analyze the reasons for the performance differences between various sampling strategies under the same framework and loss function. We suggest that deteriorated over-fitting is an important factor causing poor performance, and enhancing statistical stability can rectify this problem. Inspired by that, a simple yet effective approach is proposed, termed group sampling, which gathers samples from the same class into groups. The model is thereby trained using normalized group samples, which helps alleviate the negative impact of individual samples. Group sampling updates the pipeline of pseudo-label generation by guaranteeing that samples are more efficiently classified into the correct classes. It regulates the representation learning process, enhancing statistical stability for feature representation in a progressive fashion. Extensive experiments on Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID and MSMT17 show that group sampling achieves performance comparable to state-of-the-art methods and outperforms the current techniques under purely camera-agnostic settings. Brain Network Construction and Classification Toolbox (BrainNetClass)Zhen Zhou, Xiaobo Chen, Yu Zhang et al.
Brain functional network has become an increasingly used approach in understanding brain functions and diseases. Many network construction methods have been developed, whereas the majority of the studies still used static pairwise Pearson's correlation-based functional connectivity. The goal of this work is to introduce a toolbox namely "Brain Network Construction and Classification" (BrainNetClass) to the field to promote more advanced brain network construction methods. It comprises various brain network construction methods, including some state-of-the-art methods that were recently developed to capture more complex interactions among brain regions along with connectome feature extraction, reduction, parameter optimization towards network-based individualized classification. BrainNetClass is a MATLAB-based, open-source, cross-platform toolbox with graphical user-friendly interfaces for cognitive and clinical neuroscientists to perform rigorous computer-aided diagnosis with interpretable result presentations even though they do not possess neuroimage computing and machine learning knowledge. Automatic sleep staging is essential for sleep assessment and disorder diagnosis. Most existing methods depend on one specific dataset and are limited to be generalized to other unseen datasets, for which the training data and testing data are from the same dataset. In this paper, we introduce domain generalization into automatic sleep staging and propose the task of generalizable sleep staging which aims to improve the model generalization ability to unseen datasets. Inspired by existing domain generalization methods, we adopt the feature alignment idea and propose a framework called SleepDG to solve it. Considering both of local salient features and sequential features are important for sleep staging, we propose a Multi-level Feature Alignment combining epoch-level and sequence-level feature alignment to learn domain-invariant feature representations. Specifically, we design an Epoch-level Feature Alignment to align the feature distribution of each single sleep epoch among different domains, and a Sequence-level Feature Alignment to minimize the discrepancy of sequential features among different domains. SleepDG is validated on five public datasets, achieving the state-of-the-art performance.

LLMs as Bridges: Reformulating Grounded Multimodal Named Entity RecognitionJinyuan Li, Han Li, Di Sun et al.
Grounded Multimodal Named Entity Recognition (GMNER) is a nascent multimodal task that aims to identify named entities, entity types and their corresponding visual regions. GMNER task exhibits two challenging properties: 1) The weak correlation between image-text pairs in social media results in a significant portion of named entities being ungroundable. 2) There exists a distinction between coarse-grained referring expressions commonly used in similar tasks (e.g., phrase localization, referring expression comprehension) and fine-grained named entities. In this paper, we propose RiVEG, a unified framework that reformulates GMNER into a joint MNER-VE-VG task by leveraging large language models (LLMs) as a connecting bridge. This reformulation brings two benefits: 1) It maintains the optimal MNER performance and eliminates the need for employing object detection methods to pre-extract regional features, thereby naturally addressing two major limitations of existing GMNER methods. 2) The introduction of entity expansion expression and Visual Entailment (VE) module unifies Visual Grounding (VG) and Entity Grounding (EG). It enables RiVEG to effortlessly inherit the Visual Entailment and Visual Grounding capabilities of any current or prospective multimodal pretraining models. Extensive experiments demonstrate that RiVEG outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the existing GMNER dataset and achieves absolute leads of 10.65%, 6.21%, and 8.83% in all three subtasks.

Enhancing SNN-based Spatio-Temporal Learning: A Benchmark Dataset and Cross-Modality Attention ModelShibo Zhou, Bo Yang, Mengwen Yuan et al.
Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), renowned for their low power consumption, brain-inspired architecture, and spatio-temporal representation capabilities, have garnered considerable attention in recent years. Similar to Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), high-quality benchmark datasets are of great importance to the advances of SNNs. However, our analysis indicates that many prevalent neuromorphic datasets lack strong temporal correlation, preventing SNNs from fully exploiting their spatio-temporal representation capabilities. Meanwhile, the integration of event and frame modalities offers more comprehensive visual spatio-temporal information. Yet, the SNN-based cross-modality fusion remains underexplored. In this work, we present a neuromorphic dataset called DVS-SLR that can better exploit the inherent spatio-temporal properties of SNNs. Compared to existing datasets, it offers advantages in terms of higher temporal correlation, larger scale, and more varied scenarios. In addition, our neuromorphic dataset contains corresponding frame data, which can be used for developing SNN-based fusion methods. By virtue of the dual-modal feature of the dataset, we propose a Cross-Modality Attention (CMA) based fusion method. The CMA model efficiently utilizes the unique advantages of each modality, allowing for SNNs to learn both temporal and spatial attention scores from the spatio-temporal features of event and frame modalities, subsequently allocating these scores across modalities to enhance their synergy. Experimental results demonstrate that our method not only improves recognition accuracy but also ensures robustness across diverse scenarios.

Mitigating Reward Over-Optimization in RLHF via Behavior-Supported RegularizationJuntao Dai, Taiye Chen, Yaodong Yang et al.
Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) is an effective method for aligning large language models (LLMs) with human values. However, reward over-optimization remains an open challenge leading to discrepancies between the performance of LLMs under the reward model and the true human objectives. A primary contributor to reward over-optimization is the extrapolation error that arises when the reward model evaluates out-of-distribution (OOD) responses. However, current methods still fail to prevent the increasing frequency of OOD response generation during the reinforcement learning (RL) process and are not effective at handling extrapolation errors from OOD responses. In this work, we propose the Behavior-Supported Policy Optimization (BSPO) method to mitigate the reward over-optimization issue. Specifically, we define behavior policy as the next token distribution of the reward training dataset to model the in-distribution (ID) region of the reward model. Building on this, we introduce the behavior-supported Bellman operator to regularize the value function, penalizing all OOD values without impacting the ID ones. Consequently, BSPO reduces the generation of OOD responses during the RL process, thereby avoiding overestimation caused by the reward model's extrapolation errors. Theoretically, we prove that BSPO guarantees a monotonic improvement of the supported policy until convergence to the optimal behavior-supported policy. Empirical results from extensive experiments show that BSPO outperforms baselines in preventing reward over-optimization due to OOD evaluation and finding the optimal ID policy.

CausalCOMRL: Context-Based Offline Meta-Reinforcement Learning with Causal RepresentationZhengzhe Zhang, Wenjia Meng, Haoliang Sun et al.
Context-based offline meta-reinforcement learning (OMRL) methods have achieved appealing success by leveraging pre-collected offline datasets to develop task representations that guide policy learning. However, current context-based OMRL methods often introduce spurious correlations, where task components are incorrectly correlated due to confounders. These correlations can degrade policy performance when the confounders in the test task differ from those in the training task. To address this problem, we propose CausalCOMRL, a context-based OMRL method that integrates causal representation learning. This approach uncovers causal relationships among the task components and incorporates the causal relationships into task representations, enhancing the generalizability of RL agents. We further improve the distinction of task representations from different tasks by using mutual information optimization and contrastive learning. Utilizing these causal task representations, we employ SAC to optimize policies on meta-RL benchmarks. Experimental results show that CausalCOMRL achieves better performance than other methods on most benchmarks.

Personalized Sleep Staging Leveraging Source-free Unsupervised Domain AdaptationYangxuan Zhou, Sha Zhao, Jiquan Wang et al.
Sleep staging is crucial for assessing sleep quality and diagnosing related disorders. Recent deep learning models for automatic sleep staging using polysomnography often suffer from poor generalization to new subjects because they are trained and tested on the same labeled datasets, overlooking individual differences. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel Source-Free Unsupervised Individual Domain Adaptation (SF-UIDA) framework. This two-step adaptation scheme allows the model to effectively adjust to new unlabeled individuals without needing source data, facilitating personalized customization in clinical settings. Our framework has been applied to three established sleep staging models and tested on three public datasets, achieving state-of-the-art performance.

VLASCD: A Visual Language Action Model for Simultaneous Chatting and Decision MakingZuojin Tang, Bin Hu, Chenyang Zhao et al.
Recent large pretrained models such as LLMs (e.g., GPT series) and VLAs (e.g., OpenVLA) have achieved notable progress on multimodal tasks, yet they are built upon a multi-input single-output (MISO) paradigm. We show that this paradigm fundamentally limits performance in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) scenarios, where parallel task execution is required. In MISO architectures, tasks compete for a shared output channel, creating mutual exclusion effects that cause unbalanced optimization and degraded performance. To address this gap, we introduce MIMO-VLA (VLASCD), a unified training framework that enables concurrent multi-task outputs, exemplified by simultaneous dialogue generation and decision-making. Inspired by human cognition, MIMO-VLA eliminates interference between tasks and supports efficient parallel processing. Experiments on the CARLA autonomous driving platform demonstrate that MIMO-VLA substantially outperforms state-of-the-art MISO-based LLMs, reinforcement learning models, and VLAs in MIMO settings, establishing a new direction for multimodal and multitask learning.

Hybrid Spiking Vision Transformer for Object Detection with Event CamerasQi Xu, Jie Deng, Jiangrong Shen et al.
Event-based object detection has gained increasing attention due to its advantages such as high temporal resolution, wide dynamic range, and asynchronous address-event representation. Leveraging these advantages, Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) have emerged as a promising approach, offering low energy consumption and rich spatiotemporal dynamics. To further enhance the performance of event-based object detection, this study proposes a novel hybrid spike vision Transformer (HsVT) model. The HsVT model integrates a spatial feature extraction module to capture local and global features, and a temporal feature extraction module to model time dependencies and long-term patterns in event sequences. This combination enables HsVT to capture spatiotemporal features, improving its capability to handle complex event-based object detection tasks. To support research in this area, we developed and publicly released The Fall Detection Dataset as a benchmark for event-based object detection tasks. This dataset, captured using an event-based camera, ensures facial privacy protection and reduces memory usage due to the event representation format. We evaluated the HsVT model on GEN1 and Fall Detection datasets across various model sizes. Experimental results demonstrate that HsVT achieves significant performance improvements in event detection with fewer parameters.

Efficient ANN-SNN Conversion with Error Compensation LearningChang Liu, Jiangrong Shen, Xuming Ran et al.
Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have demonstrated outstanding performance in numerous tasks, but deployment in resource-constrained environments remains a challenge due to their high computational and memory requirements. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) operate through discrete spike events and offer superior energy efficiency, providing a bio-inspired alternative. However, current ANN-to-SNN conversion often results in significant accuracy loss and increased inference time due to conversion errors such as clipping, quantization, and uneven activation. This paper proposes a novel ANN-to-SNN conversion framework based on error compensation learning. We introduce a learnable threshold clipping function, dual-threshold neurons, and an optimized membrane potential initialization strategy to mitigate the conversion error. Together, these techniques address the clipping error through adaptive thresholds, dynamically reduce the quantization error through dual-threshold neurons, and minimize the non-uniformity error by effectively managing the membrane potential. Experimental results on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, ImageNet datasets show that our method achieves high-precision and ultra-low latency among existing conversion methods. Using only two time steps, our method significantly reduces the inference time while maintains competitive accuracy of 94.75% on CIFAR-10 dataset under ResNet-18 structure. This research promotes the practical application of SNNs on low-power hardware, making efficient real-time processing possible.

Safe Reinforcement Learning using Finite-Horizon Gradient-based EstimationJuntao Dai, Yaodong Yang, Qian Zheng et al.
A key aspect of Safe Reinforcement Learning (Safe RL) involves estimating the constraint condition for the next policy, which is crucial for guiding the optimization of safe policy updates. However, the existing Advantage-based Estimation (ABE) method relies on the infinite-horizon discounted advantage function. This dependence leads to catastrophic errors in finite-horizon scenarios with non-discounted constraints, resulting in safety-violation updates. In response, we propose the first estimation method for finite-horizon non-discounted constraints in deep Safe RL, termed Gradient-based Estimation (GBE), which relies on the analytic gradient derived along trajectories. Our theoretical and empirical analyses demonstrate that GBE can effectively estimate constraint changes over a finite horizon. Constructing a surrogate optimization problem with GBE, we developed a novel Safe RL algorithm called Constrained Gradient-based Policy Optimization (CGPO). CGPO identifies feasible optimal policies by iteratively resolving sub-problems within trust regions. Our empirical results reveal that CGPO, unlike baseline algorithms, successfully estimates the constraint functions of subsequent policies, thereby ensuring the efficiency and feasibility of each update.

The convergence of artificial intelligence and edge computing has spurred growing interest in enabling intelligent services directly on resource-constrained devices. While traditional deep learning models require significant computational resources and centralized data management, the resulting latency, bandwidth consumption, and privacy concerns have exposed critical limitations in cloud-centric paradigms. Brain-inspired computing, particularly Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), offers a promising alternative by emulating biological neuronal dynamics to achieve low-power, event-driven computation. This survey provides a comprehensive overview of Edge Intelligence based on SNNs (EdgeSNNs), examining their potential to address the challenges of on-device learning, inference, and security in edge scenarios. We present a systematic taxonomy of EdgeSNN foundations, encompassing neuron models, learning algorithms, and supporting hardware platforms. Three representative practical considerations of EdgeSNN are discussed in depth: on-device inference using lightweight SNN models, resource-aware training and updating under non-stationary data conditions, and secure and privacy-preserving issues. Furthermore, we highlight the limitations of evaluating EdgeSNNs on conventional hardware and introduce a dual-track benchmarking strategy to support fair comparisons and hardware-aware optimization. Through this study, we aim to bridge the gap between brain-inspired learning and practical edge deployment, offering insights into current advancements, open challenges, and future research directions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first dedicated and comprehensive survey on EdgeSNNs, providing an essential reference for researchers and practitioners working at the intersection of neuromorphic computing and edge intelligence.
