Multi-View Azimuth Stereo via Tangent Space ConsistencyXu Cao, Hiroaki Santo, Fumio Okura et al.
We present a method for 3D reconstruction only using calibrated multi-view surface azimuth maps. Our method, multi-view azimuth stereo, is effective for textureless or specular surfaces, which are difficult for conventional multi-view stereo methods. We introduce the concept of tangent space consistency: Multi-view azimuth observations of a surface point should be lifted to the same tangent space. Leveraging this consistency, we recover the shape by optimizing a neural implicit surface representation. Our method harnesses the robust azimuth estimation capabilities of photometric stereo methods or polarization imaging while bypassing potentially complex zenith angle estimation. Experiments using azimuth maps from various sources validate the accurate shape recovery with our method, even without zenith angles.

PlantPose: Universal Plant Skeleton Estimation via Tree-constrained Graph GenerationXinpeng Liu, Hiroaki Santo, Yosuke Toda et al.
Accurate estimation of plant skeletal structures (e.g., branching structures) from images is essential for smart agriculture and plant science. Unlike human skeletons with fixed topology, plant skeleton estimation presents a unique challenge, i.e., estimating arbitrary tree graphs from images. To address this problem, we introduce PlantPose, a universal plant skeleton estimator via tree-constrained graph generation. PlantPose combines learning-based graph generation with traditional graph algorithms to enforce tree constraints during the training loop. To enhance the model's generalization capability, we curate a large and diverse dataset comprising real-world and synthetic plant images, along with simplified representations (e.g., sketches and abstract drawings). This dataset enables the generalized model to adapt to diverse input styles and categories of plant images while preserving topological consistency. Our approach demonstrates robust and accurate plant skeleton estimation across multiple domains, including previously unseen out-of-domain scenarios. Further analyses highlight the method's strengths and limitations in handling complex, heterogeneous data distributions. Interaction-via-Actions: Cattle Interaction Detection with Joint Learning of Action-Interaction Latent SpaceRen Nakagawa, Yang Yang, Risa Shinoda et al.
This paper introduces a method and application for automatically detecting behavioral interactions between grazing cattle from a single image, which is essential for smart livestock management in the cattle industry, such as for detecting estrus. Although interaction detection for humans has been actively studied, a non-trivial challenge lies in cattle interaction detection, specifically the lack of a comprehensive behavioral dataset that includes interactions, as the interactions of grazing cattle are rare events. We, therefore, propose CattleAct, a data-efficient method for interaction detection by decomposing interactions into the combinations of actions by individual cattle. Specifically, we first learn an action latent space from a large-scale cattle action dataset. Then, we embed rare interactions via the fine-tuning of the pre-trained latent space using contrastive learning, thereby constructing a unified latent space of actions and interactions. On top of the proposed method, we develop a practical working system integrating video and GPS inputs. Experiments on a commercial-scale pasture demonstrate the accurate interaction detection achieved by our method compared to the baselines. Unsupervised 3D Human Pose Estimation via Conditional Multi-view Ancestral SamplingRyohei Goto, Takuya Fujihashi, Shunsuke Saruwatari et al.
We propose a method of estimating a 3D human pose from a single view without 3D supervision. The key to our method is to leverage the 2D diffusion priors of motion diffusion models (MDMs) pre-trained on large 2D human pose datasets. Specifically, we extend multi-view ancestral sampling of diffusion models to the task of 2D-3D lifting of human pose. To this end, we newly propose a conditional multi-view ancestral sampling (cMAS) that optimizes the 3D pose such that its multi-view projections follow the manifold in 2D MDM noise space, while conditioning the 3D pose to match the given 2D poses and anatomical constraints of humans. Experiments on the Yoga dataset demonstrate that our method achieves better cross-domain performance compared to state-of-the-art supervised and unsupervised 3D pose estimation methods, including extreme human poses where 3D supervision is unavailable. AnimalCLAP: Taxonomy-Aware Language-Audio Pretraining for Species Recognition and Trait InferenceRisa Shinoda, Kaede Shiohara, Nakamasa Inoue et al.
Animal vocalizations provide crucial insights for wildlife assessment, particularly in complex environments such as forests, aiding species identification and ecological monitoring. Recent advances in deep learning have enabled automatic species classification from their vocalizations. However, classifying species unseen during training remains challenging. To address this limitation, we introduce AnimalCLAP, a taxonomy-aware language-audio framework comprising a new dataset and model that incorporate hierarchical biological information. Specifically, our vocalization dataset consists of 4,225 hours of recordings covering 6,823 species, annotated with 22 ecological traits. The AnimalCLAP model is trained on this dataset to align audio and textual representations using taxonomic structures, improving the recognition of unseen species. We demonstrate that our proposed model effectively infers ecological and biological attributes of species directly from their vocalizations, achieving superior performance compared to CLAP. DP-SfM: Dual-Pixel Structure-from-Motion without Scale AmbiguityLilika Makabe, Kohei Ashida, Hiroaki Santo et al.
Multi-view 3D reconstruction, namely, structure-from-motion followed by multi-view stereo, is a fundamental component of 3D computer vision. In general, multi-view 3D reconstruction suffers from an unknown scale ambiguity unless a reference object of known size is present in the scene. In this article, we show that multi-view images captured using a dual-pixel (DP) sensor can automatically resolve the scale ambiguity, without requiring a reference object or prior calibration. Specifically, the defocus blur observed in DP images provides sufficient information to determine the absolute scale when paired with depth maps (up to scale) recovered from multi-view 3D reconstruction. Based on this observation, we develop a simple yet effective linear method to estimate the absolute scale, followed by the intensity-based optimization stage that aligns the left and right DP images by shifting them back toward each other using cross-view blur kernels. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach across diverse scenes captured with different cameras and lenses. Gaussian Mesh Renderer for Lightweight Differentiable RenderingXinpeng Liu, Fumio Okura
3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has enabled high-fidelity virtualization with fast rendering and optimization for novel view synthesis. On the other hand, triangle mesh models still remain a popular choice for surface reconstruction but suffer from slow or heavy optimization in traditional mesh-based differentiable renderers. To address this problem, we propose a new lightweight differentiable mesh renderer leveraging the efficient rasterization process of 3DGS, named Gaussian Mesh Renderer (GMR), which tightly integrates the Gaussian and mesh representations. Each Gaussian primitive is analytically derived from the corresponding mesh triangle, preserving structural fidelity and enabling the gradient flow. Compared to the traditional mesh renderers, our method achieves smoother gradients, which especially contributes to better optimization using smaller batch sizes with limited memory. Text-Guided Scene Sketch-to-Photo SynthesisAprilPyone MaungMaung, Makoto Shing, Kentaro Mitsui et al.
We propose a method for scene-level sketch-to-photo synthesis with text guidance. Although object-level sketch-to-photo synthesis has been widely studied, whole-scene synthesis is still challenging without reference photos that adequately reflect the target style. To this end, we leverage knowledge from recent large-scale pre-trained generative models, resulting in text-guided sketch-to-photo synthesis without the need for reference images. To train our model, we use self-supervised learning from a set of photographs. Specifically, we use a pre-trained edge detector that maps both color and sketch images into a standardized edge domain, which reduces the gap between photograph-based edge images (during training) and hand-drawn sketch images (during inference). We implement our method by fine-tuning a latent diffusion model (i.e., Stable Diffusion) with sketch and text conditions. Experiments show that the proposed method translates original sketch images that are not extracted from color images into photos with compelling visual quality.

NRGS: Neural Regularization for Robust 3D Semantic Gaussian SplattingZaiyan Yang, Xinpeng Liu, Heng Guo et al.
We propose a neural regularization method that refines the noisy 3D semantic field produced by lifting multi-view inconsistent 2D features, in order to obtain an accurate and robust 3D semantic Gaussian Splatting. The 2D features extracted from vision foundation models suffer from multi-view inconsistency due to a lack of cross-view constraints. Lifting these inconsistent features directly into 3D Gaussians results in a noisy semantic field, which degrades the performance of downstream tasks. Previous methods either focus on obtaining consistent multi-view features in the preprocessing stage or aim to mitigate noise through improved optimization strategies, often at the cost of increased preprocessing time or expensive computational overhead. In contrast, we introduce a variance-aware conditional MLP that operates directly on the 3D Gaussians, leveraging their geometric and appearance attributes to correct semantic errors in 3D space. Experiments on different datasets show that our method enhances the accuracy of lifted semantics, providing an efficient and effective approach to robust 3D semantic Gaussian Splatting.

BioVITA: Biological Dataset, Model, and Benchmark for Visual-Textual-Acoustic AlignmentRisa Shinoda, Kaede Shiohara, Nakamasa Inoue et al.
Understanding animal species from multimodal data poses an emerging challenge at the intersection of computer vision and ecology. While recent biological models, such as BioCLIP, have demonstrated strong alignment between images and textual taxonomic information for species identification, the integration of the audio modality remains an open problem. We propose BioVITA, a novel visual-textual-acoustic alignment framework for biological applications. BioVITA involves (i) a training dataset, (ii) a representation model, and (iii) a retrieval benchmark. First, we construct a large-scale training dataset comprising 1.3 million audio clips and 2.3 million images, covering 14,133 species annotated with 34 ecological trait labels. Second, building upon BioCLIP2, we introduce a two-stage training framework to effectively align audio representations with visual and textual representations. Third, we develop a cross-modal retrieval benchmark that covers all possible directional retrieval across the three modalities (i.e., image-to-audio, audio-to-text, text-to-image, and their reverse directions), with three taxonomic levels: Family, Genus, and Species. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model learns a unified representation space that captures species-level semantics beyond taxonomy, advancing multimodal biodiversity understanding. Near-light Photometric Stereo with Symmetric LightsLilika Makabe, Heng Guo, Hiroaki Santo et al.
This paper describes a linear solution method for near-light photometric stereo by exploiting symmetric light source arrangements. Unlike conventional non-convex optimization approaches, by arranging multiple sets of symmetric nearby light source pairs, our method derives a closed-form solution for surface normal and depth without requiring initialization. In addition, our method works as long as the light sources are symmetrically distributed about an arbitrary point even when the entire spatial offset is uncalibrated. Experiments showcase the accuracy of shape recovery accuracy of our method, achieving comparable results to the state-of-the-art calibrated near-light photometric stereo method while significantly reducing requirements of careful depth initialization and light calibration.

GaussianPlant: Structure-aligned Gaussian Splatting for 3D Reconstruction of PlantsYang Yang, Risa Shinoda, Hiroaki Santo et al.
We present a method for jointly recovering the appearance and internal structure of botanical plants from multi-view images based on 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). While 3DGS exhibits robust reconstruction of scene appearance for novel-view synthesis, it lacks structural representations underlying those appearances (e.g., branching patterns of plants), which limits its applicability to tasks such as plant phenotyping. To achieve both high-fidelity appearance and structural reconstruction, we introduce GaussianPlant, a hierarchical 3DGS representation, which disentangles structure and appearance. Specifically, we employ structure primitives (StPs) to explicitly represent branch and leaf geometry, and appearance primitives (ApPs) to the plants' appearance using 3D Gaussians. StPs represent a simplified structure of the plant, i.e., modeling branches as cylinders and leaves as disks. To accurately distinguish the branches and leaves, StP's attributes (i.e., branches or leaves) are optimized in a self-organized manner. ApPs are bound to each StP to represent the appearance of branches or leaves as in conventional 3DGS. StPs and ApPs are jointly optimized using a re-rendering loss on the input multi-view images, as well as the gradient flow from ApP to StP using the binding correspondence information. We conduct experiments to qualitatively evaluate the reconstruction accuracy of both appearance and structure, as well as real-world experiments to qualitatively validate the practical performance. Experiments show that the GaussianPlant achieves both high-fidelity appearance reconstruction via ApPs and accurate structural reconstruction via StPs, enabling the extraction of branch structure and leaf instances.

TreeFormer: Single-view Plant Skeleton Estimation via Tree-constrained Graph GenerationXinpeng Liu, Hiroaki Santo, Yosuke Toda et al.

Unlike human skeletons with fixed topology, plant skeleton estimation presents a unique challenge, i.e., estimating arbitrary tree graphs from images. While recent graph generation methods successfully infer thin structures from images, it is challenging to constrain the output graph strictly to a tree structure. To this problem, we present TreeFormer, a plant skeleton estimator via tree-constrained graph generation. Our approach combines learning-based graph generation with traditional graph algorithms to impose the constraints during the training loop. Specifically, our method projects an unconstrained graph onto a minimum spanning tree (MST) during the training loop and incorporates this prior knowledge into the gradient descent optimization by suppressing unwanted feature values. Experiments show that our method accurately estimates target plant skeletal structures for multiple domains: Synthetic tree patterns, real botanical roots, and grapevine branches. High-fidelity Multi-view Normal Integration with Scale-encoded Neural Surface RepresentationTongyu Yang, Heng Guo, Yasuyuki Matsushita et al.
Previous multi-view normal integration methods typically sample a single ray per pixel, without considering the spatial area covered by each pixel, which varies with camera intrinsics and the camera-to-object distance. Consequently, when the target object is captured at different distances, the normals at corresponding pixels may differ across views. This multi-view surface normal inconsistency results in the blurring of high-frequency details in the reconstructed surface. To address this issue, we propose a scale-encoded neural surface representation that incorporates the pixel coverage area into the neural representation. By associating each 3D point with a spatial scale and calculating its normal from a hybrid grid-based encoding, our method effectively represents multi-scale surface normals captured at varying distances. Furthermore, to enable scale-aware surface reconstruction, we introduce a mesh extraction module that assigns an optimal local scale to each vertex based on the training observations. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach consistently yields high-fidelity surface reconstruction from normals observed at varying distances, outperforming existing multi-view normal integration methods.

HalDec-Bench: Benchmarking Hallucination Detector in Image CaptioningKuniaki Saito, Risa Shinoda, Shohei Tanaka et al.
Hallucination detection in captions (HalDec) assesses a vision-language model's ability to correctly align image content with text by identifying errors in captions that misrepresent the image. Beyond evaluation, effective hallucination detection is also essential for curating high-quality image-caption pairs used to train VLMs. However, the generalizability of VLMs as hallucination detectors across different captioning models and hallucination types remains unclear due to the lack of a comprehensive benchmark. In this work, we introduce HalDec-Bench, a benchmark designed to evaluate hallucination detectors in a principled and interpretable manner. HalDec-Bench contains captions generated by diverse VLMs together with human annotations indicating the presence of hallucinations, detailed hallucination-type categories, and segment-level labels. The benchmark provides tasks with a wide range of difficulty levels and reveals performance differences across models that are not visible in existing multimodal reasoning or alignment benchmarks. Our analysis further uncovers two key findings. First, detectors tend to recognize sentences appearing at the beginning of a response as correct, regardless of their actual correctness. Second, our experiments suggest that dataset noise can be substantially reduced by using strong VLMs as filters while employing recent VLMs as caption generators. Zero-shot Hierarchical Plant Segmentation via Foundation Segmentation Models and Text-to-image AttentionJunhao Xing, Ryohei Miyakawa, Yang Yang et al.
Foundation segmentation models achieve reasonable leaf instance extraction from top-view crop images without training (i.e., zero-shot). However, segmenting entire plant individuals with each consisting of multiple overlapping leaves remains challenging. This problem is referred to as a hierarchical segmentation task, typically requiring annotated training datasets, which are often species-specific and require notable human labor. To address this, we introduce ZeroPlantSeg, a zero-shot segmentation for rosette-shaped plant individuals from top-view images. We integrate a foundation segmentation model, extracting leaf instances, and a vision-language model, reasoning about plants' structures to extract plant individuals without additional training. Evaluations on datasets with multiple plant species, growth stages, and shooting environments demonstrate that our method surpasses existing zero-shot methods and achieves better cross-domain performance than supervised methods. HoGS: Unified Near and Far Object Reconstruction via Homogeneous Gaussian SplattingXinpeng Liu, Zeyi Huang, Fumio Okura et al.
Novel view synthesis has demonstrated impressive progress recently, with 3D Gaussian splatting (3DGS) offering efficient training time and photorealistic real-time rendering. However, reliance on Cartesian coordinates limits 3DGS's performance on distant objects, which is important for reconstructing unbounded outdoor environments. We found that, despite its ultimate simplicity, using homogeneous coordinates, a concept on the projective geometry, for the 3DGS pipeline remarkably improves the rendering accuracies of distant objects. We therefore propose Homogeneous Gaussian Splatting (HoGS) incorporating homogeneous coordinates into the 3DGS framework, providing a unified representation for enhancing near and distant objects. HoGS effectively manages both expansive spatial positions and scales particularly in outdoor unbounded environments by adopting projective geometry principles. Experiments show that HoGS significantly enhances accuracy in reconstructing distant objects while maintaining high-quality rendering of nearby objects, along with fast training speed and real-time rendering capability. AlignBench: Benchmarking Fine-Grained Image-Text Alignment with Synthetic Image-Caption PairsKuniaki Saito, Risa Shinoda, Shohei Tanaka et al.
Assessing image-text alignment models such as CLIP is crucial for bridging visual and linguistic representations. Yet existing benchmarks rely on rule-based perturbations or short captions, limiting their ability to measure fine-grained alignment. We introduce AlignBench, a benchmark that provides a new indicator of image-text alignment by evaluating detailed image-caption pairs generated by diverse image-to-text and text-to-image models. Each sentence is annotated for correctness, enabling direct assessment of VLMs as alignment evaluators. Benchmarking a wide range of decoder-based VLMs reveals three key findings: (i) CLIP-based models, even those tailored for compositional reasoning, remain nearly blind; (ii) detectors systematically over-score early sentences; and (iii) they show strong self-preference, favoring their own outputs and harming detection performance. Spectral Sensitivity Estimation with an Uncalibrated Diffraction GratingLilika Makabe, Hiroaki Santo, Fumio Okura et al.
This paper introduces a practical and accurate calibration method for camera spectral sensitivity using a diffraction grating. Accurate calibration of camera spectral sensitivity is crucial for various computer vision tasks, including color correction, illumination estimation, and material analysis. Unlike existing approaches that require specialized narrow-band filters or reference targets with known spectral reflectances, our method only requires an uncalibrated diffraction grating sheet, readily available off-the-shelf. By capturing images of the direct illumination and its diffracted pattern through the grating sheet, our method estimates both the camera spectral sensitivity and the diffraction grating parameters in a closed-form manner. Experiments on synthetic and real-world data demonstrate that our method outperforms conventional reference target-based methods, underscoring its effectiveness and practicality.

NeuraLeaf: Neural Parametric Leaf Models with Shape and Deformation DisentanglementYang Yang, Dongni Mao, Hiroaki Santo et al.
We develop a neural parametric model for 3D leaves for plant modeling and reconstruction that are essential for agriculture and computer graphics. While neural parametric models are actively studied for humans and animals, plant leaves present unique challenges due to their diverse shapes and flexible deformation. To this problem, we introduce a neural parametric model for leaves, NeuraLeaf. Capitalizing on the fact that flattened leaf shapes can be approximated as a 2D plane, NeuraLeaf disentangles the leaves' geometry into their 2D base shapes and 3D deformations. This representation allows learning from rich sources of 2D leaf image datasets for the base shapes, and also has the advantage of simultaneously learning textures aligned with the geometry. To model the 3D deformation, we propose a novel skeleton-free skinning model and create a newly captured 3D leaf dataset called DeformLeaf. We show that NeuraLeaf successfully generates a wide range of leaf shapes with deformation, resulting in accurate model fitting to 3D observations like depth maps and point clouds. NeRSP: Neural 3D Reconstruction for Reflective Objects with Sparse Polarized ImagesYufei Han, Heng Guo, Koki Fukai et al.
We present NeRSP, a Neural 3D reconstruction technique for Reflective surfaces with Sparse Polarized images. Reflective surface reconstruction is extremely challenging as specular reflections are view-dependent and thus violate the multiview consistency for multiview stereo. On the other hand, sparse image inputs, as a practical capture setting, commonly cause incomplete or distorted results due to the lack of correspondence matching. This paper jointly handles the challenges from sparse inputs and reflective surfaces by leveraging polarized images. We derive photometric and geometric cues from the polarimetric image formation model and multiview azimuth consistency, which jointly optimize the surface geometry modeled via implicit neural representation. Based on the experiments on our synthetic and real datasets, we achieve the state-of-the-art surface reconstruction results with only 6 views as input.

Descriptor-Free Multi-View Region Matching for Instance-Wise 3D ReconstructionTakuma Doi, Fumio Okura, Toshiki Nagahara et al.
This paper proposes a multi-view extension of instance segmentation without relying on texture or shape descriptor matching. Multi-view instance segmentation becomes challenging for scenes with repetitive textures and shapes, e.g., plant leaves, due to the difficulty of multi-view matching using texture or shape descriptors. To this end, we propose a multi-view region matching method based on epipolar geometry, which does not rely on any feature descriptors. We further show that the epipolar region matching can be easily integrated into instance segmentation and effective for instance-wise 3D reconstruction. Experiments demonstrate the improved accuracy of multi-view instance matching and the 3D reconstruction compared to the baseline methods.

Probabilistic Plant Modeling via Multi-View Image-to-Image TranslationTakahiro Isokane, Fumio Okura, Ayaka Ide et al.
This paper describes a method for inferring three-dimensional (3D) plant branch structures that are hidden under leaves from multi-view observations. Unlike previous geometric approaches that heavily rely on the visibility of the branches or use parametric branching models, our method makes statistical inferences of branch structures in a probabilistic framework. By inferring the probability of branch existence using a Bayesian extension of image-to-image translation applied to each of multi-view images, our method generates a probabilistic plant 3D model, which represents the 3D branching pattern that cannot be directly observed. Experiments demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approach in generating convincing branch structures in comparison to prior approaches.
