Topology-aware Generalization of Decentralized SGD

This paper studies the algorithmic stability and generalizability of decentralized stochastic gradient descent (D-SGD). We prove that the consensus model learned by D-SGD is $\mathcal{O}{(N^{-1}+m^{-1} +λ^2)}$-stable in expectation in the non-convex non-smooth setting, where $N$ is the total sample size, $m$ is the worker number, and $1+λ$ is the spectral gap that measures the connectivity of the communication topology. These results then deliver an $\mathcal{O}{(N^{-(1+α)/2}+ m^{-(1+α)/2}+λ^{1+α} + φ_{\mathcal{S}})}$ in-average generalization bound, which is non-vacuous even when $λ$ is closed to $1$, in contrast to vacuous as suggested by existing literature on the projected version of D-SGD. Our theory indicates that the generalizability of D-SGD is positively correlated with the spectral gap, and can explain why consensus control in initial training phase can ensure better generalization. Experiments of VGG-11 and ResNet-18 on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100 and Tiny-ImageNet justify our theory. To our best knowledge, this is the first work on the topology-aware generalization of vanilla D-SGD. A Wireless AI-Generated Content (AIGC) Provisioning Framework Empowered by Semantic Communication

With the significant advances in AI-generated content (AIGC) and the proliferation of mobile devices, providing high-quality AIGC services via wireless networks is becoming the future direction. However, the primary challenges of AIGC services provisioning in wireless networks lie in unstable channels, limited bandwidth resources, and unevenly distributed computational resources. To this end, this paper proposes a semantic communication (SemCom)-empowered AIGC (SemAIGC) generation and transmission framework, where only semantic information of the content rather than all the binary bits should be generated and transmitted by using SemCom. Specifically, SemAIGC integrates diffusion models within the semantic encoder and decoder to design a workload-adjustable transceiver thereby allowing adjustment of computational resource utilization in edge and local. In addition, a Resource-aware wOrklOad Trade-off (ROOT) scheme is devised to intelligently make workload adaptation decisions for the transceiver, thus efficiently generating, transmitting, and fine-tuning content as per dynamic wireless channel conditions and service requirements. Simulations verify the superiority of our proposed SemAIGC framework in terms of latency and content quality compared to conventional approaches.

FedSDG-FS: Efficient and Secure Feature Selection for Vertical Federated Learning

Vertical Federated Learning (VFL) enables multiple data owners, each holding a different subset of features about largely overlapping sets of data sample(s), to jointly train a useful global model. Feature selection (FS) is important to VFL. It is still an open research problem as existing FS works designed for VFL either assumes prior knowledge on the number of noisy features or prior knowledge on the post-training threshold of useful features to be selected, making them unsuitable for practical applications. To bridge this gap, we propose the Federated Stochastic Dual-Gate based Feature Selection (FedSDG-FS) approach. It consists of a Gaussian stochastic dual-gate to efficiently approximate the probability of a feature being selected, with privacy protection through Partially Homomorphic Encryption without a trusted third-party. To reduce overhead, we propose a feature importance initialization method based on Gini impurity, which can accomplish its goals with only two parameter transmissions between the server and the clients. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets show that FedSDG-FS significantly outperforms existing approaches in terms of achieving accurate selection of high-quality features as well as building global models with improved performance.

How Does Naming Affect LLMs on Code Analysis Tasks?

The Large Language Models (LLMs), such as GPT and BERT, were proposed for natural language processing (NLP) and have shown promising results as general-purpose language models. An increasing number of industry professionals and researchers are adopting LLMs for program analysis tasks. However, one significant difference between programming languages and natural languages is that a programmer has the flexibility to assign any names to variables, methods, and functions in the program, whereas a natural language writer does not. Intuitively, the quality of naming in a program affects the performance of LLMs in program analysis tasks. This paper investigates how naming affects LLMs on code analysis tasks. Specifically, we create a set of datasets with code containing nonsense or misleading names for variables, methods, and functions, respectively. We then use well-trained models (CodeBERT) to perform code analysis tasks on these datasets. The experimental results show that naming has a significant impact on the performance of code analysis tasks based on LLMs, indicating that code representation learning based on LLMs heavily relies on well-defined names in code. Additionally, we conduct a case study on some special code analysis tasks using GPT, providing further insights.

Which Features are Learned by CodeBert: An Empirical Study of the BERT-based Source Code Representation Learning

The Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) were proposed in the natural language process (NLP) and shows promising results. Recently researchers applied the BERT to source-code representation learning and reported some good news on several downstream tasks. However, in this paper, we illustrated that current methods cannot effectively understand the logic of source codes. The representation of source code heavily relies on the programmer-defined variable and function names. We design and implement a set of experiments to demonstrate our conjecture and provide some insights for future works.

Distributed Pruning Towards Tiny Neural Networks in Federated Learning

Neural network pruning is an essential technique for reducing the size and complexity of deep neural networks, enabling large-scale models on devices with limited resources. However, existing pruning approaches heavily rely on training data for guiding the pruning strategies, making them ineffective for federated learning over distributed and confidential datasets. Additionally, the memory- and computation-intensive pruning process becomes infeasible for recourse-constrained devices in federated learning. To address these challenges, we propose FedTiny, a distributed pruning framework for federated learning that generates specialized tiny models for memory- and computing-constrained devices. We introduce two key modules in FedTiny to adaptively search coarse- and finer-pruned specialized models to fit deployment scenarios with sparse and cheap local computation. First, an adaptive batch normalization selection module is designed to mitigate biases in pruning caused by the heterogeneity of local data. Second, a lightweight progressive pruning module aims to finer prune the models under strict memory and computational budgets, allowing the pruning policy for each layer to be gradually determined rather than evaluating the overall model structure. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of FedTiny, which outperforms state-of-the-art approaches, particularly when compressing deep models to extremely sparse tiny models. FedTiny achieves an accuracy improvement of 2.61% while significantly reducing the computational cost by 95.91% and the memory footprint by 94.01% compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Safety Layers in Aligned Large Language Models: The Key to LLM Security

Aligned LLMs are secure, capable of recognizing and refusing to answer malicious questions. However, the role of internal parameters in maintaining such security is not well understood yet, further these models can be vulnerable to security degradation when subjected to fine-tuning attacks. To address these challenges, our work uncovers the mechanism behind security in aligned LLMs at the parameter level, identifying a small set of contiguous layers in the middle of the model that are crucial for distinguishing malicious queries from normal ones, referred to as ``safety layers". We first confirm the existence of these safety layers by analyzing variations in input vectors within the model's internal layers. Additionally, we leverage the over-rejection phenomenon and parameters scaling analysis to precisely locate the safety layers. Building on these findings, we propose a novel fine-tuning approach, Safely Partial-Parameter Fine-Tuning (SPPFT), that fixes the gradient of the safety layers during fine-tuning to address the security degradation. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach can significantly preserve LLM security while maintaining performance and reducing computational resources compared to full fine-tuning.

Pay "Attention" to Adverse Weather: Weather-aware Attention-based Object Detection

Despite the recent advances of deep neural networks, object detection for adverse weather remains challenging due to the poor perception of some sensors in adverse weather. Instead of relying on one single sensor, multimodal fusion has been one promising approach to provide redundant detection information based on multiple sensors. However, most existing multimodal fusion approaches are ineffective in adjusting the focus of different sensors under varying detection environments in dynamic adverse weather conditions. Moreover, it is critical to simultaneously observe local and global information under complex weather conditions, which has been neglected in most early or late-stage multimodal fusion works. In view of these, this paper proposes a Global-Local Attention (GLA) framework to adaptively fuse the multi-modality sensing streams, i.e., camera, gated camera, and lidar data, at two fusion stages. Specifically, GLA integrates an early-stage fusion via a local attention network and a late-stage fusion via a global attention network to deal with both local and global information, which automatically allocates higher weights to the modality with better detection features at the late-stage fusion to cope with the specific weather condition adaptively. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed GLA compared with state-of-the-art fusion approaches under various adverse weather conditions, such as light fog, dense fog, and snow.

Residue-based Label Protection Mechanisms in Vertical Logistic Regression

Federated learning (FL) enables distributed participants to collaboratively learn a global model without revealing their private data to each other. Recently, vertical FL, where the participants hold the same set of samples but with different features, has received increased attention. This paper first presents one label inference attack method to investigate the potential privacy leakages of the vertical logistic regression model. Specifically, we discover that the attacker can utilize the residue variables, which are calculated by solving the system of linear equations constructed by local dataset and the received decrypted gradients, to infer the privately owned labels. To deal with this, we then propose three protection mechanisms, e.g., additive noise mechanism, multiplicative noise mechanism, and hybrid mechanism which leverages local differential privacy and homomorphic encryption techniques, to prevent the attack and improve the robustness of the vertical logistic regression. model. Experimental results show that both the additive noise mechanism and the multiplicative noise mechanism can achieve efficient label protection with only a slight drop in model testing accuracy, furthermore, the hybrid mechanism can achieve label protection without any testing accuracy degradation, which demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of our protection techniques

Towards Robust On-Ramp Merging via Augmented Multimodal Reinforcement Learning

Despite the success of AI-enabled onboard perception, on-ramp merging has been one of the main challenges for autonomous driving. Due to limited sensing range of onboard sensors, a merging vehicle can hardly observe main road conditions and merge properly. By leveraging the wireless communications between connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), a merging CAV has potential to proactively obtain the intentions of nearby vehicles. However, CAVs can be prone to inaccurate observations, such as the noisy basic safety messages (BSM) and poor quality surveillance images. In this paper, we present a novel approach for Robust on-ramp merge of CAVs via Augmented and Multi-modal Reinforcement Learning, named by RAMRL. Specifically, we formulate the on-ramp merging problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) by taking driving safety, comfort driving behavior, and traffic efficiency into account. To provide reliable merging maneuvers, we simultaneously leverage BSM and surveillance images for multi-modal observation, which is used to learn a policy model through proximal policy optimization (PPO). Moreover, to improve data efficiency and provide better generalization performance, we train the policy model with augmented data (e.g., noisy BSM and noisy surveillance images). Extensive experiments are conducted with Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) platform under two typical merging scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our robust on-ramp merging design.

InFi: End-to-End Learning to Filter Input for Resource-Efficiency in Mobile-Centric Inference

Mobile-centric AI applications have high requirements for resource-efficiency of model inference. Input filtering is a promising approach to eliminate the redundancy so as to reduce the cost of inference. Previous efforts have tailored effective solutions for many applications, but left two essential questions unanswered: (1) theoretical filterability of an inference workload to guide the application of input filtering techniques, thereby avoiding the trial-and-error cost for resource-constrained mobile applications; (2) robust discriminability of feature embedding to allow input filtering to be widely effective for diverse inference tasks and input content. To answer them, we first formalize the input filtering problem and theoretically compare the hypothesis complexity of inference models and input filters to understand the optimization potential. Then we propose the first end-to-end learnable input filtering framework that covers most state-of-the-art methods and surpasses them in feature embedding with robust discriminability. We design and implement InFi that supports six input modalities and multiple mobile-centric deployments. Comprehensive evaluations confirm our theoretical results and show that InFi outperforms strong baselines in applicability, accuracy, and efficiency. InFi achieve 8.5x throughput and save 95% bandwidth, while keeping over 90% accuracy, for a video analytics application on mobile platforms.

Fed-CPrompt: Contrastive Prompt for Rehearsal-Free Federated Continual Learning

Federated continual learning (FCL) learns incremental tasks over time from confidential datasets distributed across clients. This paper focuses on rehearsal-free FCL, which has severe forgetting issues when learning new tasks due to the lack of access to historical task data. To address this issue, we propose Fed-CPrompt based on prompt learning techniques to obtain task-specific prompts in a communication-efficient way. Fed-CPrompt introduces two key components, asynchronous prompt learning, and contrastive continual loss, to handle asynchronous task arrival and heterogeneous data distributions in FCL, respectively. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of Fed-CPrompt in achieving SOTA rehearsal-free FCL performance.

PATROL: Privacy-Oriented Pruning for Collaborative Inference Against Model Inversion Attacks

Collaborative inference has been a promising solution to enable resource-constrained edge devices to perform inference using state-of-the-art deep neural networks (DNNs). In collaborative inference, the edge device first feeds the input to a partial DNN locally and then uploads the intermediate result to the cloud to complete the inference. However, recent research indicates model inversion attacks (MIAs) can reconstruct input data from intermediate results, posing serious privacy concerns for collaborative inference. Existing perturbation and cryptography techniques are inefficient and unreliable in defending against MIAs while performing accurate inference. This paper provides a viable solution, named PATROL, which develops privacy-oriented pruning to balance privacy, efficiency, and utility of collaborative inference. PATROL takes advantage of the fact that later layers in a DNN can extract more task-specific features. Given limited local resources for collaborative inference, PATROL intends to deploy more layers at the edge based on pruning techniques to enforce task-specific features for inference and reduce task-irrelevant but sensitive features for privacy preservation. To achieve privacy-oriented pruning, PATROL introduces two key components: Lipschitz regularization and adversarial reconstruction training, which increase the reconstruction errors by reducing the stability of MIAs and enhance the target inference model by adversarial training, respectively. On a real-world collaborative inference task, vehicle re-identification, we demonstrate the superior performance of PATROL in terms of against MIAs.

Federated Semi-Supervised Domain Adaptation via Knowledge Transfer

Given the rapidly changing machine learning environments and expensive data labeling, semi-supervised domain adaptation (SSDA) is imperative when the labeled data from the source domain is statistically different from the partially labeled data from the target domain. Most prior SSDA research is centrally performed, requiring access to both source and target data. However, data in many fields nowadays is generated by distributed end devices. Due to privacy concerns, the data might be locally stored and cannot be shared, resulting in the ineffectiveness of existing SSDA research. This paper proposes an innovative approach to achieve SSDA over multiple distributed and confidential datasets, named by Federated Semi-Supervised Domain Adaptation (FSSDA). FSSDA integrates SSDA with federated learning based on strategically designed knowledge distillation techniques, whose efficiency is improved by performing source and target training in parallel. Moreover, FSSDA controls the amount of knowledge transferred across domains by properly selecting a key parameter, i.e., the imitation parameter. Further, the proposed FSSDA can be effectively generalized to multi-source domain adaptation scenarios. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of FSSDA design.

Multi-Operational Mathematical Derivations in Latent Space

This paper investigates the possibility of approximating multiple mathematical operations in latent space for expression derivation. To this end, we introduce different multi-operational representation paradigms, modelling mathematical operations as explicit geometric transformations. By leveraging a symbolic engine, we construct a large-scale dataset comprising 1.7M derivation steps stemming from 61K premises and 6 operators, analysing the properties of each paradigm when instantiated with state-of-the-art neural encoders. Specifically, we investigate how different encoding mechanisms can approximate expression manipulation in latent space, exploring the trade-off between learning different operators and specialising within single operations, as well as the ability to support multi-step derivations and out-of-distribution generalisation. Our empirical analysis reveals that the multi-operational paradigm is crucial for disentangling different operators, while discriminating the conclusions for a single operation is achievable in the original expression encoder. Moreover, we show that architectural choices can heavily affect the training dynamics, structural organisation, and generalisation of the latent space, resulting in significant variations across paradigms and classes of encoders.

Importance-Aware Data Selection for Efficient LLM Instruction Tuning

Instruction tuning plays a critical role in enhancing the performance and efficiency of Large Language Models (LLMs). Its success depends not only on the quality of the instruction data but also on the inherent capabilities of the LLM itself. Some studies suggest that even a small amount of high-quality data can achieve instruction fine-tuning results that are on par with, or even exceed, those from using a full-scale dataset. However, rather than focusing solely on calculating data quality scores to evaluate instruction data, there is a growing need to select high-quality data that maximally enhances the performance of instruction tuning for a given LLM. In this paper, we propose the Model Instruction Weakness Value (MIWV) as a novel metric to quantify the importance of instruction data in enhancing model's capabilities. The MIWV metric is derived from the discrepancies in the model's responses when using In-Context Learning (ICL), helping identify the most beneficial data for enhancing instruction tuning performance. Our experimental results demonstrate that selecting only the top 1\% of data based on MIWV can outperform training on the full dataset. Furthermore, this approach extends beyond existing research that focuses on data quality scoring for data selection, offering strong empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Secure Transformer Inference Protocol

Security of model parameters and user data is critical for Transformer-based services, such as ChatGPT. While recent strides in secure two-party protocols have successfully addressed security concerns in serving Transformer models, their adoption is practically infeasible due to the prohibitive cryptographic overheads involved. Drawing insights from our hands-on experience in developing two real-world Transformer-based services, we identify the inherent efficiency bottleneck in the two-party assumption. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel three-party threat model. Within this framework, we design a semi-symmetric permutation-based protection scheme and present STIP, the first secure Transformer inference protocol without any inference accuracy loss. Experiments on representative Transformer models in real systems show that STIP has practical security and outperforms state-of-the-art secure two-party protocols in efficiency by millions of times.

Tight Memory-Regret Lower Bounds for Streaming Bandits

In this paper, we investigate the streaming bandits problem, wherein the learner aims to minimize regret by dealing with online arriving arms and sublinear arm memory. We establish the tight worst-case regret lower bound of $Ω\left( (TB)^α K^{1-α}\right), α= 2^{B} / (2^{B+1}-1)$ for any algorithm with a time horizon $T$, number of arms $K$, and number of passes $B$. The result reveals a separation between the stochastic bandits problem in the classical centralized setting and the streaming setting with bounded arm memory. Notably, in comparison to the well-known $Ω(\sqrt{KT})$ lower bound, an additional double logarithmic factor is unavoidable for any streaming bandits algorithm with sublinear memory permitted. Furthermore, we establish the first instance-dependent lower bound of $Ω\left(T^{1/(B+1)} \sum_{Δ_x>0} \frac{μ^*}{Δ_x}\right)$ for streaming bandits. These lower bounds are derived through a unique reduction from the regret-minimization setting to the sample complexity analysis for a sequence of $ε$-optimal arms identification tasks, which maybe of independent interest. To complement the lower bound, we also provide a multi-pass algorithm that achieves a regret upper bound of $\tilde{O} \left( (TB)^α K^{1 - α}\right)$ using constant arm memory.

MLink: Linking Black-Box Models from Multiple Domains for Collaborative Inference

The cost efficiency of model inference is critical to real-world machine learning (ML) applications, especially for delay-sensitive tasks and resource-limited devices. A typical dilemma is: in order to provide complex intelligent services (e.g. smart city), we need inference results of multiple ML models, but the cost budget (e.g. GPU memory) is not enough to run all of them. In this work, we study underlying relationships among black-box ML models and propose a novel learning task: model linking, which aims to bridge the knowledge of different black-box models by learning mappings (dubbed model links) between their output spaces. We propose the design of model links which supports linking heterogeneous black-box ML models. Also, in order to address the distribution discrepancy challenge, we present adaptation and aggregation methods of model links. Based on our proposed model links, we developed a scheduling algorithm, named MLink. Through collaborative multi-model inference enabled by model links, MLink can improve the accuracy of obtained inference results under the cost budget. We evaluated MLink on a multi-modal dataset with seven different ML models and two real-world video analytics systems with six ML models and 3,264 hours of video. Experimental results show that our proposed model links can be effectively built among various black-box models. Under the budget of GPU memory, MLink can save 66.7% inference computations while preserving 94% inference accuracy, which outperforms multi-task learning, deep reinforcement learning-based scheduler and frame filtering baselines.

Image-based Prompt Injection: Hijacking Multimodal LLMs through Visually Embedded Adversarial Instructions

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) integrate vision and text to power applications, but this integration introduces new vulnerabilities. We study Image-based Prompt Injection (IPI), a black-box attack in which adversarial instructions are embedded into natural images to override model behavior. Our end-to-end IPI pipeline incorporates segmentation-based region selection, adaptive font scaling, and background-aware rendering to conceal prompts from human perception while preserving model interpretability. Using the COCO dataset and GPT-4-turbo, we evaluate 12 adversarial prompt strategies and multiple embedding configurations. The results show that IPI can reliably manipulate the output of the model, with the most effective configuration achieving up to 64\% attack success under stealth constraints. These findings highlight IPI as a practical threat in black-box settings and underscore the need for defenses against multimodal prompt injection.

Monotonic Reference-Free Refinement for Autoformalization

While statement autoformalization has advanced rapidly, full-theorem autoformalization remains largely unexplored. Existing iterative refinement methods in statement autoformalization typicall improve isolated aspects of formalization, such as syntactic correctness, but struggle to jointly optimizing multiple quality dimensions, which is critical for full-theorem autoformalization. We introduce a reference-free iterative monotonic process for full-theorem autoformalization that leverages complementary feedback from theorem provers and LLM-based judges, without access to ground-truth proofs or existing formalizations at inference time. Our approach optimizes a masked composite objective over Formal Validity, Logical Preservation, Mathematical Consistency, and Formal Quality, guided by a responsiveness map that indicates how different LLMs acting as different roles preferentially improve each dimension. We further propose an acceptance policy that guarantees certified monotonic improvement, and provide conditions ensuring convergence and termination. Empirical experiments demonstrate the proposed process enables simultaneous improvement across multiple dimensions, achieving 93.44% formal validity and a 78.22% overall score on miniF2F, and 44.09% formal validity and a 29.79% overall score on ProofNet.

IntentVCNet: Bridging Spatio-Temporal Gaps for Intention-Oriented Controllable Video Captioning

Intent-oriented controlled video captioning aims to generate targeted descriptions for specific targets in a video based on customized user intent. Current Large Visual Language Models (LVLMs) have gained strong instruction following and visual comprehension capabilities. Although the LVLMs demonstrated proficiency in spatial and temporal understanding respectively, it was not able to perform fine-grained spatial control in time sequences in direct response to instructions. This substantial spatio-temporal gap complicates efforts to achieve fine-grained intention-oriented control in video. Towards this end, we propose a novel IntentVCNet that unifies the temporal and spatial understanding knowledge inherent in LVLMs to bridge the spatio-temporal gap from both prompting and model perspectives. Specifically, we first propose a prompt combination strategy designed to enable LLM to model the implicit relationship between prompts that characterize user intent and video sequences. We then propose a parameter efficient box adapter that augments the object semantic information in the global visual context so that the visual token has a priori information about the user intent. The final experiment proves that the combination of the two strategies can further enhance the LVLM's ability to model spatial details in video sequences, and facilitate the LVLMs to accurately generate controlled intent-oriented captions. Our proposed method achieved state-of-the-art results in several open source LVLMs and was the runner-up in the IntentVC challenge. Our code is available on https://github.com/thqiu0419/IntentVCNet.

FormalScience: Scalable Human-in-the-Loop Autoformalisation of Science with Agentic Code Generation in Lean

Formalising informal mathematical reasoning into formally verifiable code is a significant challenge for large language models. In scientific fields such as physics, domain-specific machinery (\textit{e.g.} Dirac notation, vector calculus) imposes additional formalisation challenges that modern LLMs and agentic approaches have yet to tackle. To aid autoformalisation in scientific domains, we present FormalScience; a domain-agnostic human-in-the-loop agentic pipeline that enables a single domain expert (without deep formal language experience) to produce \textit{syntactically correct} and \textit{semantically aligned} formal proofs of informal reasoning for low economic cost. Applying FormalScience to physics, we construct FormalPhysics, a dataset of 200 university-level (LaTeX) physics problems and solutions (primarily quantum mechanics and electromagnetism), along with their Lean4 formal representations. Compared to existing formal math benchmarks, FormalPhysics achieves perfect formal validity and exhibits greater statement complexity. We evaluate open-source models and proprietary systems on a statement autoformalisation task on our dataset via zero-shot prompting, self-refinement with error feedback, and a novel multi-stage agentic approach, and explore autoformalisation limitations in modern LLM-based approaches. We provide the first systematic characterisation of semantic drift in physics autoformalisation in terms of concepts such as notational collapse and abstraction elevation which reveals what formal language verifies when full semantic preservation is unattainable. From IOCs to Regex: Automating CTI Operationalization for SOC with LLMs

Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) reports contain Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) that are critical for security operations. To operationalize these IOCs across heterogeneous logs, analysts often convert them into regular expressions (regexes) for tasks such as digital forensics, log parsing, and SIEM rule creation. However, regex construction is still largely manual, requiring analysts to extract IOCs from CTI reports and transform them into syntactically valid and semantically precise patterns. This process is slow, error-prone, and increasingly impractical as CTI volumes grow. Although recent studies have applied Large Language Models (LLMs) to IOC extraction, they typically output plain strings rather than regexes, limiting practical deployment. Plain IOCs cannot effectively capture variations in system context, log format, or attacker behavior. To address this gap, we propose IOCRegex-gen, a fully automated LLM-based regex generation system that converts IOCs into regexes. The system introduces two key innovations: (i) a group-aware mechanism that identifies which IOC segments should be represented as capture or non-capture groups, and (ii) an iterative reasoning and multi-stage validation pipeline to ensure syntactic validity and semantic correctness. Experiments on over 3,000 real CTI reports and 2,400 ground-truth strings from the MITRE ATT&CK Evaluation framework show that IOCRegex-gen achieves an average hit rate of 99.1% and a false-positive rate of only 0.8%, demonstrating its effectiveness for large-scale CTI processing and automated regex generation.

Nice Fold or Hero Call: Learning Budget-Efficient Thinking for Adaptive Reasoning

Large reasoning models (LRMs) improve problem solving through extended reasoning, but often misallocate test-time compute. Existing efficiency methods reduce cost by compressing reasoning traces or conditioning budget on perceived difficulty, yet largely overlook solvability. As a result, they may spend large budgets on queries beyond the model's capability while compressing hard-but-solvable queries that require deeper reasoning. In this work, we formulate adaptive reasoning as a computational investment under uncertainty, where budget should follow the expected return of reasoning rather than perceived difficulty alone. To instantiate this principle, we propose Budget-Efficient Thinking (BET), a two-stage framework that combines behavioral cold-start with GRPO under an investment-cost-aware reward. By aligning solve-or-fold decisions with rollout-derived solvability, BET learns three behaviors: (1) short solve, answering easy queries concisely; (2) nice fold, abstaining early when continued reasoning has near-zero expected return; and (3) hero call, preserving sufficient compute for hard-but-solvable queries. Across seven benchmarks and three base models, BET reduces reasoning tokens by ~55% on average while achieving overall performance improvements, and transfers zero-shot from mathematical reasoning to scientific QA and logical reasoning with comparable efficiency gains.

Hide Your Malicious Goal Into Benign Narratives: Jailbreak Large Language Models through Carrier Articles

Large Language Model (LLM) jailbreak refers to a type of attack aimed to bypass the safeguard of an LLM to generate contents that are inconsistent with the safe usage guidelines. Based on the insights from the self-attention computation process, this paper proposes a novel blackbox jailbreak approach, which involves crafting the payload prompt by strategically injecting the prohibited query into a carrier article. The carrier article maintains the semantic proximity to the prohibited query, which is automatically produced by combining a hypernymy article and a context, both of which are generated from the prohibited query. The intuition behind the usage of carrier article is to activate the neurons in the model related to the semantics of the prohibited query while suppressing the neurons that will trigger the objectionable text. Carrier article itself is benign, and we leveraged prompt injection techniques to produce the payload prompt. We evaluate our approach using JailbreakBench, testing against four target models across 100 distinct jailbreak objectives. The experimental results demonstrate our method's superior effectiveness, achieving an average success rate of 63% across all target models, significantly outperforming existing blackbox jailbreak methods.

Metis: Learning to Jailbreak LLMs via Self-Evolving Metacognitive Policy Optimization

Red teaming is critical for uncovering vulnerabilities in Large Language Models (LLMs). While automated methods have improved scalability, existing approaches often rely on static heuristics or stochastic search, rendering them brittle against advanced safety alignment. To address this, we introduce Metis, a framework that reformulates jailbreaking as inference-time policy optimization within an adversarial Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP). Metis employs a self-evolving metacognitive loop to perform causal diagnosis of a target's defense logic and leverages structured feedback as a semantic gradient to refine its policy, offering enhanced interpretability through transparent reasoning traces. Extensive evaluations across 10 diverse models demonstrate that Metis achieves the strongest average Attack Success Rate (ASR) among compared methods at 89.2%, maintaining high efficacy on resilient frontier models (e.g., 76.0% on O1 and 78.0% on GPT-5-chat) where traditional baselines exhibit substantial performance degradation. By replacing redundant exploration with directed optimization, Metis reduces token costs by an average of 8.2x and up to 11.4x. Our analysis reveals that current defenses remain vulnerable to internally-steered, closed-loop reasoning trajectories under the tested settings, highlighting a critical need for next-generation defenses capable of reasoning about safety dynamically during inference.

Permit: Permission-Aware Representation Intervention for Controlled Generation in Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in enterprise settings where they handle sensitive documents and user context, raising acute concerns over security and controllability. Conventional access control regulates whether information is accessible to the model, yet leaves how the model uses that information at generation time largely unconstrained: once sensitive content enters the context, outputs may still drift beyond a user's authorized scope. We present Permit, a novel permission-aware representation intervention framework that closes this gap by enforcing fine-grained control directly on the model's hidden states. Through exploratory analysis, we find that permission conditions induce hidden-state shifts that are (i) separable across permissions and (ii) concentrated in a small set of dominant directions. Permit exploits this geometry in two stages: it first identifies a permission-sensitive subspace from activation differences across permission conditions, and then performs lightweight interventions within this subspace to steer generation, with two concrete instantiations (offset-based and gated). Both operate atop a frozen backbone with only a handful of permission-specific parameters, achieving precise control with minimal overhead. Experimental results demonstrate that Permit performs better than the state-of-the-art method across multiple permission settings while driving information leakage to near zero, achieving over 18% F1-score improvement with >98% fewer trainable parameters.

MOBA: A Material-Oriented Backdoor Attack against LiDAR-based 3D Object Detection Systems

LiDAR-based 3D object detection is widely used in safety-critical systems. However, these systems remain vulnerable to backdoor attacks that embed hidden malicious behaviors during training. A key limitation of existing backdoor attacks is their lack of physical realizability, primarily due to the digital-to-physical domain gap. Digital triggers often fail in real-world settings because they overlook material-dependent LiDAR reflection properties. On the other hand, physically constructed triggers are often unoptimized, leading to low effectiveness or easy detectability.This paper introduces Material-Oriented Backdoor Attack (MOBA), a novel framework that bridges the digital-physical gap by explicitly modeling the material properties of real-world triggers. MOBA tackles two key challenges in physical backdoor design: 1) robustness of the trigger material under diverse environmental conditions, 2) alignment between the physical trigger's behavior and its digital simulation. First, we propose a systematic approach to selecting robust trigger materials, identifying titanium dioxide (TiO_2) for its high diffuse reflectivity and environmental resilience. Second, to ensure the digital trigger accurately mimics the physical behavior of the material-based trigger, we develop a novel simulation pipeline that features: (1) an angle-independent approximation of the Oren-Nayar BRDF model to generate realistic LiDAR intensities, and (2) a distance-aware scaling mechanism to maintain spatial consistency across varying depths. We conduct extensive experiments on state-of-the-art LiDAR-based and Camera-LiDAR fusion models, showing that MOBA achieves a 93.50% attack success rate, outperforming prior methods by over 41%. Our work reveals a new class of physically realizable threats and underscores the urgent need for defenses that account for material-level properties in real-world environments.

FDLLM: A Dedicated Detector for Black-Box LLMs Fingerprinting

Large Language Models (LLMs) are rapidly transforming the landscape of digital content creation. However, the prevalent black-box Application Programming Interface (API) access to many LLMs introduces significant challenges in accountability, governance, and security. LLM fingerprinting, which aims to identify the source model by analyzing statistical and stylistic features of generated text, offers a potential solution. Current progress in this area is hindered by a lack of dedicated datasets and the need for efficient, practical methods that are robust against adversarial manipulations. To address these challenges, we introduce FD-Dataset, a comprehensive bilingual fingerprinting benchmark comprising 90,000 text samples from 20 famous proprietary and open-source LLMs. Furthermore, we present FDLLM, a novel fingerprinting method that leverages parameter-efficient Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) to fine-tune a foundation model. This approach enables LoRA to extract deep, persistent features that characterize each source LLM. Through our analysis, we find that LoRA adaptation promotes the aggregation of outputs from the same LLM in representation space while enhancing the separation between different LLMs. This mechanism explains why LoRA proves particularly effective for LLM fingerprinting. Extensive empirical evaluations on FD-Dataset demonstrate FDLLM's superiority, achieving a Macro F1 score 22.1% higher than the strongest baseline. FDLLM also exhibits strong generalization to newly released models, achieving an average accuracy of 95% on unseen models. Notably, FDLLM remains consistently robust under various adversarial attacks, including polishing, translation, and synonym substitution. Experimental results show that FDLLM reduces the average attack success rate from 49.2% (LM-D) to 23.9%.

Beyond the Wrapper: Identifying Artifact Reliance in Static Malware Classifiers using TRUSTEE

Modern cybersecurity relies heavily on static machine-learning-based malware classifiers. However, transformations such as packing and other non-semantic modifications applied to executable files limit their reliability. Malware classifiers often learn these unnecessary artifacts rather than the true binary behavior because of the high association between maliciousness and packing. Moreover, these malware classifiers are black boxes, making it difficult to understand what they learn. To address this issue, we proposed a two-part framework using the post-hoc interpretability XAI tool TRUSTEE, followed by a manual analysis of the top features. We conducted several controlled experiments by varying the dataset composition ratios to understand their impact on the results. The top-ranked features across all experiments, identified by TRUSTEE, were predominantly packing artifacts, portable executable(PE) metadata, and n-grams at the string level, rather than malicious semantics. These results suggest that these malware classifiers are highly sensitive to dataset composition and can misinterpret packing as malicious behavior. Our proposed framework allows for the reproducible diagnosis of such biases and forms a guideline for building more robust and semantically meaningful malware detection models

CSGuard: Toward Forgery-Resistant Watermarking in Diffusion Models via Compressed Sensing Constraint

Latent-based diffusion model watermarking embeds watermarks into generated images' latent space to enable content attribution, offering a training-free solution for intellectual property protection and digital forensics. However, these methods exhibit a critical vulnerability to the forgery attack, attackers can extract the watermark by inverting the watermarked image and re-generating it with an arbitrary prompt, thereby enabling false attribution on malicious content. In this paper, we propose the CSGuard, the first forgery-resistant watermarking schema that leverages compressed sensing to bind the watermarked image generation and verification to a secret matrix. This ensures that only users possessing the secret matrix can correctly embed or verify the image watermark, prevents the illegal users from forgery without compromising generation quality and watermark integrity. Experimental results demonstrate that CSGuard achieves strong forgery resistance, reduces the attack success rate from 100.0\% to 28.12\%, and achieve 100\% detection rate on benign watermarked images without compromising watermarking effectiveness.

Double-I Watermark: Protecting Model Copyright for LLM Fine-tuning

To support various applications, a prevalent and efficient approach for business owners is leveraging their valuable datasets to fine-tune a pre-trained LLM through the API provided by LLM owners or cloud servers. However, this process carries a substantial risk of model misuse, potentially resulting in severe economic consequences for business owners. Thus, safeguarding the copyright of these customized models during LLM fine-tuning has become an urgent practical requirement, but there are limited existing solutions to provide such protection. To tackle this pressing issue, we propose a novel watermarking approach named ``Double-I watermark''. Specifically, based on the instruct-tuning data, two types of backdoor data paradigms are introduced with trigger in the instruction and the input, respectively. By leveraging LLM's learning capability to incorporate customized backdoor samples into the dataset, the proposed approach effectively injects specific watermarking information into the customized model during fine-tuning, which makes it easy to inject and verify watermarks in commercial scenarios. We evaluate the proposed "Double-I watermark" under various fine-tuning methods, demonstrating its harmlessness, robustness, uniqueness, imperceptibility, and validity through both quantitative and qualitative analyses.

Activation-Space Anchored Access Control for Multi-Class Permission Reasoning in Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed over knowledge bases for efficient knowledge retrieval and question answering. However, LLMs can inadvertently answer beyond a user's permission scope, leaking sensitive content, thus making it difficult to deploy knowledge-base QA under fine-grained access control requirements. In this work, we identify a geometric regularity in intermediate activations: for the same query, representations induced by different permission scopes cluster distinctly and are readily separable. Building on this separability, we propose Activation-space Anchored Access Control (AAAC), a training-free framework for multi-class permission control. AAAC constructs an anchor bank, with one permission anchor per class, from a small offline sample set and requires no fine-tuning. At inference time, a multi-anchor steering mechanism redirects each query's activations toward the anchor-defined authorized region associated with the current user, thereby suppressing over-privileged generations by design. Finally, extensive experiments across three LLM families demonstrate that AAAC reduces permission violation rates by up to 86.5% and prompt-based attack success rates by 90.7%, while improving response usability with minor inference overhead compared to baselines.

Reasoning with Autoregressive-Diffusion Collaborative Thoughts

Autoregressive and diffusion models represent two complementary generative paradigms. Autoregressive models excel at sequential planning and constraint composition, yet struggle with tasks that require explicit spatial or physical grounding. Diffusion models, in contrast, capture rich spatial structure through high-dimensional generation, but lack the stepwise logical control needed to satisfy complex, multi-stage constraints or to reliably identify and correct errors. We introduce Collaborative Thoughts, a unified collaborative framework that enables autoregressive and diffusion models to reason and generate jointly through a closed-loop interaction. In Collaborative Thoughts, autoregressive models perform structured planning and constraint management, diffusion models instantiate these constraints as intermediate visual thoughts, and a vision-based critic module evaluates whether the visual thoughts satisfy the intended structural and physical requirements. This feedback is then used to iteratively refine subsequent planning and generation steps, mitigating error propagation across modalities. Importantly, Collaborative Thoughts uses the same collaborative loop regardless of whether the task is autoregressive question answering or diffusion-based visual generation. Through representative examples, we illustrate how Collaborative Thoughts can improve the reliability of spatial reasoning and the controllability of generation.

Micro-Macro Spatial-Temporal Graph-based Encoder-Decoder for Map-Constrained Trajectory Recovery

Recovering intermediate missing GPS points in a sparse trajectory, while adhering to the constraints of the road network, could offer deep insights into users' moving behaviors in intelligent transportation systems. Although recent studies have demonstrated the advantages of achieving map-constrained trajectory recovery via an end-to-end manner, they still face two significant challenges. Firstly, existing methods are mostly sequence-based models. It is extremely hard for them to comprehensively capture the micro-semantics of individual trajectory, including the information of each GPS point and the movement between two GPS points. Secondly, existing approaches ignore the impact of the macro-semantics, i.e., the road conditions and the people's shared travel preferences reflected by a group of trajectories. To address the above challenges, we propose a Micro-Macro Spatial-Temporal Graph-based Encoder-Decoder (MM-STGED). Specifically, we model each trajectory as a graph to efficiently describe the micro-semantics of trajectory and design a novel message-passing mechanism to learn trajectory representations. Additionally, we extract the macro-semantics of trajectories and further incorporate them into a well-designed graph-based decoder to guide trajectory recovery. Extensive experiments conducted on sparse trajectories with three different sampling intervals that are respectively constructed from two real-world trajectory datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed model.

Adversarial Evasion in Non-Stationary Malware Detection: Minimizing Drift Signals through Similarity-Constrained Perturbations

Deep learning has emerged as a powerful approach for malware detection, demonstrating impressive accuracy across various data representations. However, these models face critical limitations in real-world, non-stationary environments where both malware characteristics and detection systems continuously evolve. Our research investigates a fundamental security question: Can an attacker generate adversarial malware samples that simultaneously evade classification and remain inconspicuous to drift monitoring mechanisms? We propose a novel approach that generates targeted adversarial examples in the classifier's standardized feature space, augmented with sophisticated similarity regularizers. By carefully constraining perturbations to maintain distributional similarity with clean malware, we create an optimization objective that balances targeted misclassification with drift signal minimization. We quantify the effectiveness of this approach by comprehensively comparing classifier output probabilities using multiple drift metrics. Our experiments demonstrate that similarity constraints can reduce output drift signals, with $\ell_2$ regularization showing the most promising results. We observe that perturbation budget significantly influences the evasion-detectability trade-off, with increased budget leading to higher attack success rates and more substantial drift indicators.

Autoformalization in the Wild: Assessing LLMs on Real-World Mathematical Definitions

Thanks to their linguistic capabilities, LLMs offer an opportunity to bridge the gap between informal mathematics and formal languages through autoformalization. However, it is still unclear how well LLMs generalize to sophisticated and naturally occurring mathematical statements. To address this gap, we investigate the task of autoformalizing real-world mathematical definitions: a critical component of mathematical discourse. Specifically, we introduce two novel resources for autoformalization, collecting definitions from Wikipedia (Def_Wiki) and arXiv papers (Def_ArXiv). We then systematically evaluate a range of LLMs, analyzing their ability to formalize definitions into Isabelle/HOL. Furthermore, we investigate strategies to enhance LLMs' performance including refinement through external feedback from Proof Assistants, and formal definition grounding, where we augment LLMs' formalizations through relevant contextual elements from formal mathematical libraries. Our findings reveal that definitions present a greater challenge compared to existing benchmarks, such as miniF2F. In particular, we found that LLMs still struggle with self-correction, and aligning with relevant mathematical libraries. At the same time, structured refinement methods and definition grounding strategies yield notable improvements of up to 16% on self-correction capabilities and 43% on the reduction of undefined errors, highlighting promising directions for enhancing LLM-based autoformalization in real-world scenarios.

IoT-Brain: Grounding LLMs for Semantic-Spatial Sensor Scheduling

Intelligent systems powered by large-scale sensor networks are shifting from predefined monitoring to intent-driven operation, revealing a critical Semantic-to-Physical Mapping Gap. While large language models (LLMs) excel at semantic understanding, existing perception-centric pipelines operate retrospectively, overlooking the fundamental decision of what to sense and when. We formalize this proactive decision as Semantic-Spatial Sensor Scheduling (S3) and demonstrate that direct LLM planning is unreliable due to inherent gaps in representation, reasoning, and optimization. To bridge these gaps, we introduce the Spatial Trajectory Graph (STG), a neuro-symbolic paradigm governed by a verify-before-commit discipline that transforms open-ended planning into a verifiable graph optimization problem. Based on STG, we implement IoT-Brain, a concrete system embodiment, and construct TopoSense-Bench, a campus-scale benchmark with 5,250 natural-language queries across 2,510 cameras. Evaluations show that IoT-Brain boosts task success rate by 37.6% over the strongest search-intensive methods while running nearly 2 times faster and using 6.6 times fewer prompt tokens. In real-world deployment, it approaches the reliability upper bound while reducing 4.1 times network bandwidth, providing a foundational framework for LLMs to interact with the physical world with unprecedented reliability and efficiency.

Security Tensors as a Cross-Modal Bridge: Extending Text-Aligned Safety to Vision in LVLM

Large visual-language models (LVLMs) integrate aligned large language models (LLMs) with visual modules to process multimodal inputs. However, the safety mechanisms developed for text-based LLMs do not naturally extend to visual modalities, leaving LVLMs vulnerable to harmful image inputs. To address this cross-modal safety gap, we introduce security tensors - trainable input vectors applied during inference through either the textual or visual modality. These tensors transfer textual safety alignment to visual processing without modifying the model's parameters. They are optimized using a curated dataset containing (i) malicious image-text pairs requiring rejection, (ii) contrastive benign pairs with text structurally similar to malicious queries, with the purpose of being contrastive examples to guide visual reliance, and (iii) general benign samples preserving model functionality. Experimental results demonstrate that both textual and visual security tensors significantly enhance LVLMs' ability to reject diverse harmful visual inputs while maintaining near-identical performance on benign tasks. Further internal analysis towards hidden-layer representations reveals that security tensors successfully activate the language module's textual "safety layers" in visual inputs, thereby effectively extending text-based safety to the visual modality.

MVP-Shapley: Feature-based Modeling for Evaluating the Most Valuable Player in Basketball

The burgeoning growth of the esports and multiplayer online gaming community has highlighted the critical importance of evaluating the Most Valuable Player (MVP). The establishment of an explainable and practical MVP evaluation method is very challenging. In our study, we specifically focus on play-by-play data, which records related events during the game, such as assists and points. We aim to address the challenges by introducing a new MVP evaluation framework, denoted as \oursys, which leverages Shapley values. This approach encompasses feature processing, win-loss model training, Shapley value allocation, and MVP ranking determination based on players' contributions. Additionally, we optimize our algorithm to align with expert voting results from the perspective of causality. Finally, we substantiated the efficacy of our method through validation using the NBA dataset and the Dunk City Dynasty dataset and implemented online deployment in the industry.

CTS: A Consistency-Based Medical Image Segmentation Model

In medical image segmentation tasks, diffusion models have shown significant potential. However, mainstream diffusion models suffer from drawbacks such as multiple sampling times and slow prediction results. Recently, consistency models, as a standalone generative network, have resolved this issue. Compared to diffusion models, consistency models can reduce the sampling times to once, not only achieving similar generative effects but also significantly speeding up training and prediction. However, they are not suitable for image segmentation tasks, and their application in the medical imaging field has not yet been explored. Therefore, this paper applies the consistency model to medical image segmentation tasks, designing multi-scale feature signal supervision modes and loss function guidance to achieve model convergence. Experiments have verified that the CTS model can obtain better medical image segmentation results with a single sampling during the test phase.

When AI Persuades: Adversarial Explanation Attacks on Human Trust in AI-Assisted Decision Making

Most adversarial threats in artificial intelligence target the computational behavior of models rather than the humans who rely on them. Yet modern AI systems increasingly operate within human decision loops, where users interpret and act on model recommendations. Large Language Models generate fluent natural-language explanations that shape how users perceive and trust AI outputs, revealing a new attack surface at the cognitive layer: the communication channel between AI and its users. We introduce adversarial explanation attacks (AEAs), where an attacker manipulates the framing of LLM-generated explanations to modulate human trust in incorrect outputs. We formalize this behavioral threat through the trust miscalibration gap, a metric that captures the difference in human trust between correct and incorrect outputs under adversarial explanations. By incorporating this gap, AEAs explore the daunting threats in which persuasive explanations reinforce users' trust in incorrect predictions. To characterize this threat, we conducted a controlled experiment (n = 205), systematically varying four dimensions of explanation framing: reasoning mode, evidence type, communication style, and presentation format. Our findings show that users report nearly identical trust for adversarial and benign explanations, with adversarial explanations preserving the vast majority of benign trust despite being incorrect. The most vulnerable cases arise when AEAs closely resemble expert communication, combining authoritative evidence, neutral tone, and domain-appropriate reasoning. Vulnerability is highest on hard tasks, in fact-driven domains, and among participants who are less formally educated, younger, or highly trusting of AI. This is the first systematic security study that treats explanations as an adversarial cognitive channel and quantifies their impact on human trust in AI-assisted decision making.

MASA: LLM-Driven Multi-Agent Systems for Autoformalization

Autoformalization serves a crucial role in connecting natural language and formal reasoning. This paper presents MASA, a novel framework for building multi-agent systems for autoformalization driven by Large Language Models (LLMs). MASA leverages collaborative agents to convert natural language statements into their formal representations. The architecture of MASA is designed with a strong emphasis on modularity, flexibility, and extensibility, allowing seamless integration of new agents and tools to adapt to a fast-evolving field. We showcase the effectiveness of MASA through use cases on real-world mathematical definitions and experiments on formal mathematics datasets. This work highlights the potential of multi-agent systems powered by the interaction of LLMs and theorem provers in enhancing the efficiency and reliability of autoformalization, providing valuable insights and support for researchers and practitioners in the field.

DyME: Dynamic Multi-Concept Erasure in Diffusion Models with Bi-Level Orthogonal LoRA Adaptation

Text-to-image diffusion models (DMs) inadvertently reproduce copyrighted styles and protected visual concepts, raising legal and ethical concerns. Concept erasure has emerged as a safeguard, aiming to selectively suppress such concepts through fine-tuning. However, existing methods do not scale to practical settings where providers must erase multiple and possibly conflicting concepts. The core bottleneck is their reliance on static erasure: a single checkpoint is fine-tuned to remove all target concepts, regardless of the actual erasure needs at inference. This rigid design mismatches real-world usage, where requests vary per generation, leading to degraded erasure success and reduced fidelity for non-target content. We propose DyME, an on-demand erasure framework that trains lightweight, concept-specific LoRA adapters and dynamically composes only those needed at inference. This modular design enables flexible multi-concept erasure, but naive composition causes interference among adapters, especially when many or semantically related concepts are suppressed. To overcome this, we introduce bi-level orthogonality constraints at both the feature and parameter levels, disentangling representation shifts and enforcing orthogonal adapter subspaces. We further develop ErasureBench-H, a new hierarchical benchmark with brand-series-character structure, enabling principled evaluation across semantic granularities and erasure set sizes. Experiments on ErasureBench-H and standard datasets (e.g., CIFAR-100, Imagenette) demonstrate that DyME consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baselines, achieving higher multi-concept erasure fidelity with minimal collateral degradation.

AIP: Subverting Retrieval-Augmented Generation via Adversarial Instructional Prompt

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) enhances large language models (LLMs) by retrieving relevant documents from external sources to improve factual accuracy and verifiability. However, this reliance introduces new attack surfaces within the retrieval pipeline, beyond the LLM itself. While prior RAG attacks have exposed such vulnerabilities, they largely rely on manipulating user queries, which is often infeasible in practice due to fixed or protected user inputs. This narrow focus overlooks a more realistic and stealthy vector: instructional prompts, which are widely reused, publicly shared, and rarely audited. Their implicit trust makes them a compelling target for adversaries to manipulate RAG behavior covertly. We introduce a novel attack for Adversarial Instructional Prompt (AIP) that exploits adversarial instructional prompts to manipulate RAG outputs by subtly altering retrieval behavior. By shifting the attack surface to the instructional prompts, AIP reveals how trusted yet seemingly benign interface components can be weaponized to degrade system integrity. The attack is crafted to achieve three goals: (1) naturalness, to evade user detection; (2) utility, to encourage use of prompts; and (3) robustness, to remain effective across diverse query variations. We propose a diverse query generation strategy that simulates realistic linguistic variation in user queries, enabling the discovery of prompts that generalize across paraphrases and rephrasings. Building on this, a genetic algorithm-based joint optimization is developed to evolve adversarial prompts by balancing attack success, clean-task utility, and stealthiness. Experimental results show that AIP achieves up to 95.23% ASR while preserving benign functionality. These findings uncover a critical and previously overlooked vulnerability in RAG systems, emphasizing the need to reassess the shared instructional prompts.

Untraceable DeepFakes via Traceable Fingerprint Elimination

Recent advancements in DeepFakes attribution technologies have significantly enhanced forensic capabilities, enabling the extraction of traces left by generative models (GMs) in images, making DeepFakes traceable back to their source GMs. Meanwhile, several attacks have attempted to evade attribution models (AMs) for exploring their limitations, calling for more robust AMs. However, existing attacks fail to eliminate GMs' traces, thus can be mitigated by defensive measures. In this paper, we identify that untraceable DeepFakes can be achieved through a multiplicative attack, which can fundamentally eliminate GMs' traces, thereby evading AMs even enhanced with defensive measures. We design a universal and black-box attack method that trains an adversarial model solely using real data, applicable for various GMs and agnostic to AMs. Experimental results demonstrate the outstanding attack capability and universal applicability of our method, achieving an average attack success rate (ASR) of 97.08\% against 6 advanced AMs on DeepFakes generated by 9 GMs. Even in the presence of defensive mechanisms, our method maintains an ASR exceeding 72.39\%. Our work underscores the potential challenges posed by multiplicative attacks and highlights the need for more robust AMs.

VMask: Tunable Label Privacy Protection for Vertical Federated Learning via Layer Masking

Though vertical federated learning (VFL) is generally considered to be privacy-preserving, recent studies have shown that VFL system is vulnerable to label inference attacks originating from various attack surfaces. Among these attacks, the model completion (MC) attack is currently the most powerful one. Existing defense methods against it either sacrifice model accuracy or incur impractical computational overhead. In this paper, we propose VMask, a novel label privacy protection framework designed to defend against MC attack from the perspective of layer masking. Our key insight is to disrupt the strong correlation between input data and intermediate outputs by applying the secret sharing (SS) technique to mask layer parameters in the attacker's model. We devise a strategy for selecting critical layers to mask, reducing the overhead that would arise from naively applying SS to the entire model. Moreover, VMask is the first framework to offer a tunable privacy budget to defenders, allowing for flexible control over the levels of label privacy according to actual requirements. We built a VFL system, implemented VMask on it, and extensively evaluated it using five model architectures and 13 datasets with different modalities, comparing it to 12 other defense methods. The results demonstrate that VMask achieves the best privacy-utility trade-off, successfully thwarting the MC attack (reducing the label inference accuracy to a random guessing level) while preserving model performance (e.g., in Transformer-based model, the averaged drop of VFL model accuracy is only 0.09%). VMask's runtime is up to 60,846 times faster than cryptography-based methods, and it only marginally exceeds that of standard VFL by 1.8 times in a large Transformer-based model, which is generally acceptable.

VTarbel: Targeted Label Attack with Minimal Knowledge on Detector-enhanced Vertical Federated Learning

Vertical federated learning (VFL) enables multiple parties with disjoint features to collaboratively train models without sharing raw data. While privacy vulnerabilities of VFL are extensively-studied, its security threats-particularly targeted label attacks-remain underexplored. In such attacks, a passive party perturbs inputs at inference to force misclassification into adversary-chosen labels. Existing methods rely on unrealistic assumptions (e.g., accessing VFL-model's outputs) and ignore anomaly detectors deployed in real-world systems. To bridge this gap, we introduce VTarbel, a two-stage, minimal-knowledge attack framework explicitly designed to evade detector-enhanced VFL inference. During the preparation stage, the attacker selects a minimal set of high-expressiveness samples (via maximum mean discrepancy), submits them through VFL protocol to collect predicted labels, and uses these pseudo-labels to train estimated detector and surrogate model on local features. In attack stage, these models guide gradient-based perturbations of remaining samples, crafting adversarial instances that induce targeted misclassifications and evade detection. We implement VTarbel and evaluate it against four model architectures, seven multimodal datasets, and two anomaly detectors. Across all settings, VTarbel outperforms four state-of-the-art baselines, evades detection, and retains effective against three representative privacy-preserving defenses. These results reveal critical security blind spots in current VFL deployments and underscore urgent need for robust, attack-aware defenses.

Sample-Efficient Reinforcement Learning Controller for Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established intervention for Parkinson's disease (PD), but conventional open-loop systems lack adaptability, are energy-inefficient due to continuous stimulation, and provide limited personalization to individual neural dynamics. Adaptive DBS (aDBS) offers a closed-loop alternative, using biomarkers such as beta-band oscillations to dynamically modulate stimulation. While reinforcement learning (RL) holds promise for personalized aDBS control, existing methods suffer from high sample complexity, unstable exploration in binary action spaces, and limited deployability on resource-constrained hardware. We propose SEA-DBS, a sample-efficient actor-critic framework that addresses the core challenges of RL-based adaptive neurostimulation. SEA-DBS integrates a predictive reward model to reduce reliance on real-time feedback and employs Gumbel Softmax-based exploration for stable, differentiable policy updates in binary action spaces. Together, these components improve sample efficiency, exploration robustness, and compatibility with resource-constrained neuromodulatory hardware. We evaluate SEA-DBS on a biologically realistic simulation of Parkinsonian basal ganglia activity, demonstrating faster convergence, stronger suppression of pathological beta-band power, and resilience to post-training FP16 quantization. Our results show that SEA-DBS offers a practical and effective RL-based aDBS framework for real-time, resource-constrained neuromodulation.
