Building systems that achieve a deeper understanding of language is one of the central goals of natural language processing (NLP). Towards this goal, recent works have begun to train language models on narrative datasets which require extracting the most critical information by integrating across long contexts. However, it is still an open question whether these models are learning a deeper understanding of the text, or if the models are simply learning a heuristic to complete the task. This work investigates this further by turning to the one language processing system that truly understands complex language: the human brain. We show that training language models for deeper narrative understanding results in richer representations that have improved alignment to human brain activity. We further find that the improvements in brain alignment are larger for character names than for other discourse features, which indicates that these models are learning important narrative elements. Taken together, these results suggest that this type of training can indeed lead to deeper language understanding. These findings have consequences both for cognitive neuroscience by revealing some of the significant factors behind brain-NLP alignment, and for NLP by highlighting that understanding of long-range context can be improved beyond language modeling.

Unified 3D Scene Understanding Through Physical World ModelingWanhee Lee, Klemen Kotar, Rahul Mysore Venkatesh et al.
Understanding 3D scenes requires flexible combinations of visual reasoning tasks, including depth estimation, novel view synthesis, and object manipulation, all of which are essential for perception and interaction. Existing approaches have typically addressed these tasks in isolation, preventing them from sharing a common representation or transferring knowledge across tasks. A conceptually simpler but practically non-trivial alternative is to unify these diverse tasks into a single model, reducing different tasks from separate training objectives to merely different prompts and allowing for joint training across all datasets. In this work, we present a physical world model for unified 3D understanding and interaction (3WM), formulated as a probabilistic graphical model in which nodes represent multimodal scene elements such as RGB, optical flow, and camera pose. Diverse tasks emerge from different inference pathways through the graph: novel view synthesis from RGB and dense flow prompts, object manipulation from RGB and sparse flow prompts, and depth estimation from RGB and camera conditioning, all zero-shot without task-specific training. 3WM outperforms specialized baselines without the need for finetuning by offering precise controllability, strong geometric consistency, and robustness in real-world scenarios, achieving state-of-the-art performance on NVS and 3D object manipulation. Beyond predefined tasks, the model supports composable inference pathways, such as moving objects aside while navigating a 3D environment, enabling complex geometric reasoning. This demonstrates that a unified model can serve as a practical alternative to fragmented task-specific systems, taking a step towards a general-purpose visual world model.

Zero-shot World Models Are Developmentally Efficient LearnersKhai Loong Aw, Klemen Kotar, Wanhee Lee et al.
Young children demonstrate early abilities to understand their physical world, estimating depth, motion, object coherence, interactions, and many other aspects of physical scene understanding. Children are both data-efficient and flexible cognitive systems, creating competence despite extremely limited training data, while generalizing to myriad untrained tasks -- a major challenge even for today's best AI systems. Here we introduce a novel computational hypothesis for these abilities, the Zero-shot Visual World Model (ZWM). ZWM is based on three principles: a sparse temporally-factored predictor that decouples appearance from dynamics; zero-shot estimation through approximate causal inference; and composition of inferences to build more complex abilities. We show that ZWM can be learned from the first-person experience of a single child, rapidly generating competence across multiple physical understanding benchmarks. It also broadly recapitulates behavioral signatures of child development and builds brain-like internal representations. Our work presents a blueprint for efficient and flexible learning from human-scale data, advancing both a computational account for children's early physical understanding and a path toward data-efficient AI systems.

Children acquire object category representations from their everyday experiences in the first few years of life. What do the inputs to this learning process look like? We analyzed first-person videos of young children's visual experience at home from the BabyView dataset ($N$ = 31 participants, 868 hours, ages 5--36 months), using a supervised object detection model to extract common object categories from more than 3 million frames. We found that children's object category exposure was highly skewed: a few categories (e.g., cups, chairs) dominated children's visual experiences while most categories appeared rarely, replicating previous findings from a more restricted set of contexts. Category exemplars were highly variable: children encountered objects from unusual angles, in highly cluttered scenes, and partially occluded views; many categories (especially animals) were most frequently viewed as depictions. Surprisingly, despite this variability, detected categories (e.g., giraffes, apples) showed stronger groupings within superordinate categories (e.g., animals, food) relative to groupings derived from canonical photographs of these categories. We found this same pattern when using high-dimensional embeddings from both self-supervised visual and multimodal models; this effect was also recapitulated in densely sampled data from individual children. Understanding the robustness and efficiency of visual category learning will require the development of models that can exploit strong superordinate structure and learn from non-canonical, sparse, and variable exemplars.

3D Scene Understanding Through Local Random Access Sequence ModelingWanhee Lee, Klemen Kotar, Rahul Mysore Venkatesh et al.
3D scene understanding from single images is a pivotal problem in computer vision with numerous downstream applications in graphics, augmented reality, and robotics. While diffusion-based modeling approaches have shown promise, they often struggle to maintain object and scene consistency, especially in complex real-world scenarios. To address these limitations, we propose an autoregressive generative approach called Local Random Access Sequence (LRAS) modeling, which uses local patch quantization and randomly ordered sequence generation. By utilizing optical flow as an intermediate representation for 3D scene editing, our experiments demonstrate that LRAS achieves state-of-the-art novel view synthesis and 3D object manipulation capabilities. Furthermore, we show that our framework naturally extends to self-supervised depth estimation through a simple modification of the sequence design. By achieving strong performance on multiple 3D scene understanding tasks, LRAS provides a unified and effective framework for building the next generation of 3D vision models.

World Modeling with Probabilistic Structure IntegrationKlemen Kotar, Wanhee Lee, Rahul Venkatesh et al.
We present Probabilistic Structure Integration (PSI), a system for learning richly controllable and flexibly promptable world models from data. PSI consists of a three-step cycle. The first step, Probabilistic prediction, involves building a probabilistic graphical model Psi of the data, in the form of a random-access autoregressive sequence model. Psi supports a complete set of learned conditional distributions describing the dependence of any variables in the data on any other set of variables. In step 2, Structure extraction, we show how to extract underlying low-dimensional properties in the data, corresponding to a diverse set of meaningful "intermediate structures", in a zero-shot fashion via causal inference on Psi. Step 3, Integration, completes the cycle by converting these structures into new token types that are then continually mixed back into the training diet as conditioning signals and prediction targets. Each such cycle augments the capabilities of Psi, both allowing it to model the underlying data better, and creating new control handles -- akin to an LLM-like universal prompting language. We train an instance of Psi on 1.4 trillion tokens of internet video data; we use it to perform a variety of useful video prediction and understanding inferences; we extract state-of-the-art optical flow, self-supervised depth and object segmentation; and we use these structures to support a full cycle of predictive improvements.

Assessing the alignment between infants' visual and linguistic experience using multimodal language modelsAlvin Wei Ming Tan, Jane Yang, Tarun Sepuri et al.
Figuring out which objects or concepts words refer to is a central language learning challenge for young children. Most models of this process posit that children learn early object labels from co-occurrences of words and their referents that occur when someone around them talks about an object in the immediate physical environment. But how aligned in time are children's visual and linguistic experiences during everyday learning? To date, answers to this question have been limited by the need for labor-intensive manual annotations of vision-language co-occurrences. Here, we evaluate the use of contrastive language-image pretraining (CLIP) models to automatically characterize vision-language alignment in egocentric videos taken from the infant perspective in home environments. After validating CLIP alignment scores using human alignment judgments, we apply this metric to a large corpus of infant-perspective videos. We show that idealized aligned moments for learning (e.g., "look at the ball" with a ball present in the child's view) are relatively rare in children's everyday experiences compared to modern machine learning datasets, and highlight variability in alignment both within and across children. These findings suggest that infrequent alignment is a constraint for models describing early word learning and offer a new method for investigating children's multimodal environment.

Detecting False Alarms from Automatic Static Analysis Tools: How Far are We?Hong Jin Kang, Khai Loong Aw, David Lo
Automatic static analysis tools (ASATs), such as Findbugs, have a high false alarm rate. The large number of false alarms produced poses a barrier to adoption. Researchers have proposed the use of machine learning to prune false alarms and present only actionable warnings to developers. The state-of-the-art study has identified a set of "Golden Features" based on metrics computed over the characteristics and history of the file, code, and warning. Recent studies show that machine learning using these features is extremely effective and that they achieve almost perfect performance. We perform a detailed analysis to better understand the strong performance of the "Golden Features". We found that several studies used an experimental procedure that results in data leakage and data duplication, which are subtle issues with significant implications. Firstly, the ground-truth labels have leaked into features that measure the proportion of actionable warnings in a given context. Secondly, many warnings in the testing dataset appear in the training dataset. Next, we demonstrate limitations in the warning oracle that determines the ground-truth labels, a heuristic comparing warnings in a given revision to a reference revision in the future. We show the choice of reference revision influences the warning distribution. Moreover, the heuristic produces labels that do not agree with human oracles. Hence, the strong performance of these techniques previously seen is overoptimistic of their true performance if adopted in practice. Our results convey several lessons and provide guidelines for evaluating false alarm detectors.
