Air Quality Prediction with Physics-Guided Dual Neural ODEs in Open Systems

Jindong Tian, Yuxuan Liang, Ronghui Xu et al.

Air pollution significantly threatens human health and ecosystems, necessitating effective air quality prediction to inform public policy. Traditional approaches are generally categorized into physics-based and data-driven models. Physics-based models usually struggle with high computational demands and closed-system assumptions, while data-driven models may overlook essential physical dynamics, confusing the capturing of spatiotemporal correlations. Although some physics-guided approaches combine the strengths of both models, they often face a mismatch between explicit physical equations and implicit learned representations. To address these challenges, we propose Air-DualODE, a novel physics-guided approach that integrates dual branches of Neural ODEs for air quality prediction. The first branch applies open-system physical equations to capture spatiotemporal dependencies for learning physics dynamics, while the second branch identifies the dependencies not addressed by the first in a fully data-driven way. These dual representations are temporally aligned and fused to enhance prediction accuracy. Our experimental results demonstrate that Air-DualODE achieves state-of-the-art performance in predicting pollutant concentrations across various spatial scales, thereby offering a promising solution for real-world air quality challenges.

ABCNet v2: Adaptive Bezier-Curve Network for Real-time End-to-end Text Spotting

Yuliang Liu, Chunhua Shen, Lianwen Jin et al.

End-to-end text-spotting, which aims to integrate detection and recognition in a unified framework, has attracted increasing attention due to its simplicity of the two complimentary tasks. It remains an open problem especially when processing arbitrarily-shaped text instances. Previous methods can be roughly categorized into two groups: character-based and segmentation-based, which often require character-level annotations and/or complex post-processing due to the unstructured output. Here, we tackle end-to-end text spotting by presenting Adaptive Bezier Curve Network v2 (ABCNet v2). Our main contributions are four-fold: 1) For the first time, we adaptively fit arbitrarily-shaped text by a parameterized Bezier curve, which, compared with segmentation-based methods, can not only provide structured output but also controllable representation. 2) We design a novel BezierAlign layer for extracting accurate convolution features of a text instance of arbitrary shapes, significantly improving the precision of recognition over previous methods. 3) Different from previous methods, which often suffer from complex post-processing and sensitive hyper-parameters, our ABCNet v2 maintains a simple pipeline with the only post-processing non-maximum suppression (NMS). 4) As the performance of text recognition closely depends on feature alignment, ABCNet v2 further adopts a simple yet effective coordinate convolution to encode the position of the convolutional filters, which leads to a considerable improvement with negligible computation overhead. Comprehensive experiments conducted on various bilingual (English and Chinese) benchmark datasets demonstrate that ABCNet v2 can achieve state-of-the-art performance while maintaining very high efficiency.

Tag and Correct: Question aware Open Information Extraction with Two-stage Decoding

Martin Kuo, Yaobo Liang, Lei Ji et al.

Question Aware Open Information Extraction (Question aware Open IE) takes question and passage as inputs, outputting an answer tuple which contains a subject, a predicate, and one or more arguments. Each field of answer is a natural language word sequence and is extracted from the passage. The semi-structured answer has two advantages which are more readable and falsifiable compared to span answer. There are two approaches to solve this problem. One is an extractive method which extracts candidate answers from the passage with the Open IE model, and ranks them by matching with questions. It fully uses the passage information at the extraction step, but the extraction is independent to the question. The other one is the generative method which uses a sequence to sequence model to generate answers directly. It combines the question and passage as input at the same time, but it generates the answer from scratch, which does not use the facts that most of the answer words come from in the passage. To guide the generation by passage, we present a two-stage decoding model which contains a tagging decoder and a correction decoder. At the first stage, the tagging decoder will tag keywords from the passage. At the second stage, the correction decoder will generate answers based on tagged keywords. Our model could be trained end-to-end although it has two stages. Compared to previous generative models, we generate better answers by generating coarse to fine. We evaluate our model on WebAssertions (Yan et al., 2018) which is a Question aware Open IE dataset. Our model achieves a BLEU score of 59.32, which is better than previous generative methods.

Audio-based automatic mating success prediction of giant pandas

WeiRan Yan, MaoLin Tang, Qijun Zhao et al.

Giant pandas, stereotyped as silent animals, make significantly more vocal sounds during breeding season, suggesting that sounds are essential for coordinating their reproduction and expression of mating preference. Previous biological studies have also proven that giant panda sounds are correlated with mating results and reproduction. This paper makes the first attempt to devise an automatic method for predicting mating success of giant pandas based on their vocal sounds. Given an audio sequence of mating giant pandas recorded during breeding encounters, we first crop out the segments with vocal sound of giant pandas, and normalize its magnitude, and length. We then extract acoustic features from the audio segment and feed the features into a deep neural network, which classifies the mating into success or failure. The proposed deep neural network employs convolution layers followed by bidirection gated recurrent units to extract vocal features, and applies attention mechanism to force the network to focus on most relevant features. Evaluation experiments on a data set collected during the past nine years obtain promising results, proving the potential of audio-based automatic mating success prediction methods in assisting giant panda reproduction.

Style Transfer as Unsupervised Machine Translation

Zhirui Zhang, Shuo Ren, Shujie Liu et al.

Language style transferring rephrases text with specific stylistic attributes while preserving the original attribute-independent content. One main challenge in learning a style transfer system is a lack of parallel data where the source sentence is in one style and the target sentence in another style. With this constraint, in this paper, we adapt unsupervised machine translation methods for the task of automatic style transfer. We first take advantage of style-preference information and word embedding similarity to produce pseudo-parallel data with a statistical machine translation (SMT) framework. Then the iterative back-translation approach is employed to jointly train two neural machine translation (NMT) based transfer systems. To control the noise generated during joint training, a style classifier is introduced to guarantee the accuracy of style transfer and penalize bad candidates in the generated pseudo data. Experiments on benchmark datasets show that our proposed method outperforms previous state-of-the-art models in terms of both accuracy of style transfer and quality of input-output correspondence.
