A Learning-based Optimization Algorithm:Image Registration Optimizer Network

Jia Wang, Ping Wang, Biao Li et al.

Remote sensing image registration is valuable for image-based navigation system despite posing many challenges. As the search space of registration is usually non-convex, the optimization algorithm, which aims to search the best transformation parameters, is a challenging step. Conventional optimization algorithms can hardly reconcile the contradiction of simultaneous rapid convergence and the global optimization. In this paper, a novel learning-based optimization algorithm named Image Registration Optimizer Network (IRON) is proposed, which can predict the global optimum after single iteration. The IRON is trained by a 3D tensor (9x9x9), which consists of similar metric values. The elements of the 3D tensor correspond to the 9x9x9 neighbors of the initial parameters in the search space. Then, the tensor's label is a vector that points to the global optimal parameters from the initial parameters. Because of the special architecture, the IRON could predict the global optimum directly for any initialization. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs better than other classical optimization algorithms as it has higher accuracy, lower root of mean square error (RMSE), and more efficiency. Our IRON codes are available for further study.https://www.github.com/jaxwangkd04/IRON

SensoryT5: Infusing Sensorimotor Norms into T5 for Enhanced Fine-grained Emotion Classification

Yuhan Xia, Qingqing Zhao, Yunfei Long et al.

In traditional research approaches, sensory perception and emotion classification have traditionally been considered separate domains. Yet, the significant influence of sensory experiences on emotional responses is undeniable. The natural language processing (NLP) community has often missed the opportunity to merge sensory knowledge with emotion classification. To address this gap, we propose SensoryT5, a neuro-cognitive approach that integrates sensory information into the T5 (Text-to-Text Transfer Transformer) model, designed specifically for fine-grained emotion classification. This methodology incorporates sensory cues into the T5's attention mechanism, enabling a harmonious balance between contextual understanding and sensory awareness. The resulting model amplifies the richness of emotional representations. In rigorous tests across various detailed emotion classification datasets, SensoryT5 showcases improved performance, surpassing both the foundational T5 model and current state-of-the-art works. Notably, SensoryT5's success signifies a pivotal change in the NLP domain, highlighting the potential influence of neuro-cognitive data in refining machine learning models' emotional sensitivity.

PLanTS: Periodicity-aware Latent-state Representation Learning for Multivariate Time Series

Jia Wang, Xiao Wang, Chi Zhang

Multivariate time series (MTS) are ubiquitous in domains such as healthcare, climate science, and industrial monitoring, but their high dimensionality, limited labeled data, and non-stationary nature pose significant challenges for conventional machine learning methods. While recent self-supervised learning (SSL) approaches mitigate label scarcity by data augmentations or time point-based contrastive strategy, they neglect the intrinsic periodic structure of MTS and fail to capture the dynamic evolution of latent states. We propose PLanTS, a periodicity-aware self-supervised learning framework that explicitly models irregular latent states and their transitions. We first designed a period-aware multi-granularity patching mechanism and a generalized contrastive loss to preserve both instance-level and state-level similarities across multiple temporal resolutions. To further capture temporal dynamics, we design a next-transition prediction pretext task that encourages representations to encode predictive information about future state evolution. We evaluate PLanTS across a wide range of downstream tasks-including multi-class and multi-label classification, forecasting, trajectory tracking and anomaly detection. PLanTS consistently improves the representation quality over existing SSL methods and demonstrates superior runtime efficiency compared to DTW-based methods.

KNN-enhanced Deep Learning Against Noisy Labels

Shuyu Kong, You Li, Jia Wang et al.

Supervised learning on Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is data hungry. Optimizing performance of DNN in the presence of noisy labels has become of paramount importance since collecting a large dataset will usually bring in noisy labels. Inspired by the robustness of K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) against data noise, in this work, we propose to apply deep KNN for label cleanup. Our approach leverages DNNs for feature extraction and KNN for ground-truth label inference. We iteratively train the neural network and update labels to simultaneously proceed towards higher label recovery rate and better classification performance. Experiment results show that under the same setting, our approach outperforms existing label correction methods and achieves better accuracy on multiple datasets, e.g.,76.78% on Clothing1M dataset.
