Residual Channel Attention Network for Brain Glioma Segmentation

Yiming Yao, Peisheng Qian, Ziyuan Zhao et al.

A glioma is a malignant brain tumor that seriously affects cognitive functions and lowers patients' life quality. Segmentation of brain glioma is challenging because of interclass ambiguities in tumor regions. Recently, deep learning approaches have achieved outstanding performance in the automatic segmentation of brain glioma. However, existing algorithms fail to exploit channel-wise feature interdependence to select semantic attributes for glioma segmentation. In this study, we implement a novel deep neural network that integrates residual channel attention modules to calibrate intermediate features for glioma segmentation. The proposed channel attention mechanism adaptively weights feature channel-wise to optimize the latent representation of gliomas. We evaluate our method on the established dataset BraTS2017. Experimental results indicate the superiority of our method.

Zero-Shot Interpretable Image Steganalysis for Invertible Image Hiding

Hao Wang, Yiming Yao, Yaguang Xie et al.

Image steganalysis, which aims at detecting secret information concealed within images, has become a critical countermeasure for assessing the security of steganography methods, especially the emerging invertible image hiding approaches. However, prior studies merely classify input images into two categories (i.e., stego or cover) and typically conduct steganalysis under the constraint that training and testing data must follow similar distribution, thereby hindering their application in real-world scenarios. To overcome these shortcomings, we propose a novel interpretable image steganalysis framework tailored for invertible image hiding schemes under a challenging zero-shot setting. Specifically, we integrate image hiding, revealing, and steganalysis into a unified framework, endowing the steganalysis component with the capability to recover the secret information embedded in stego images. Additionally, we elaborate a simple yet effective residual augmentation strategy for generating stego images to further enhance the generalizability of the steganalyzer in cross-dataset and cross-architecture scenarios. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed approach significantly outperforms the existing steganalysis techniques for invertible image hiding schemes.

An Autonomous Probing System for Collecting Measurements at Depth from Small Surface Vehicles

Yuying Huang, Yiming Yao, Johanna Hansen et al.

This paper presents the portable autonomous probing system (APS), a low-cost robotic design for collecting water quality measurements at targeted depths from an autonomous surface vehicle (ASV). This system fills an important but often overlooked niche in marine sampling by enabling mobile sensor observations throughout the near-surface water column without the need for advanced underwater equipment. We present a probe delivery mechanism built with commercially available components and describe the corresponding open-source simulator and winch controller. Finally, we demonstrate the system in a field deployment and discuss design trade-offs and areas for future improvement. A Systematic Survey on Large Language Models for Algorithm Design

Fei Liu, Yiming Yao, Ping Guo et al.

Algorithm Design (AD) is crucial for effective problem-solving across various domains. The advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) has notably enhanced the automation and innovation within this field, offering new perspectives and promising solutions. Over the past three years, the integration of LLMs into AD (LLM4AD) has seen substantial progress, with applications spanning optimization, machine learning, mathematical reasoning, and scientific discovery. Given the rapid advancements and expanding scope of this field, a systematic review is both timely and necessary. This paper provides a systematic review of LLM4AD. First, we offer an overview and summary of existing studies. Then, we introduce a taxonomy and review the literature across four dimensions: the roles of LLMs, search methods, prompt methods, and application domains with a discussion of potential and achievements of LLMs in AD. Finally, we identify current challenges and highlight several promising directions for future research.

Evolve Cost-aware Acquisition Functions Using Large Language Models

Yiming Yao, Fei Liu, Ji Cheng et al.

Many real-world optimization scenarios involve expensive evaluation with unknown and heterogeneous costs. Cost-aware Bayesian optimization stands out as a prominent solution in addressing these challenges. To approach the global optimum within a limited budget in a cost-efficient manner, the design of cost-aware acquisition functions (AFs) becomes a crucial step. However, traditional manual design paradigm typically requires extensive domain knowledge and involves a labor-intensive trial-and-error process. This paper introduces EvolCAF, a novel framework that integrates large language models (LLMs) with evolutionary computation (EC) to automatically design cost-aware AFs. Leveraging the crossover and mutation in the algorithmic space, EvolCAF offers a novel design paradigm, significantly reduces the reliance on domain expertise and model training. The designed cost-aware AF maximizes the utilization of available information from historical data, surrogate models and budget details. It introduces novel ideas not previously explored in the existing literature on acquisition function design, allowing for clear interpretations to provide insights into its behavior and decision-making process. In comparison to the well-known EIpu and EI-cool methods designed by human experts, our approach showcases remarkable efficiency and generalization across various tasks, including 12 synthetic problems and 3 real-world hyperparameter tuning test sets.

FoMEMO: Towards Foundation Models for Expensive Multi-objective Optimization

Yiming Yao, Fei Liu, Liang Zhao et al.

Expensive multi-objective optimization is a prevalent and crucial concern in many real-world scenarios, where sample-efficiency is vital due to the limited evaluations to recover the true Pareto front for decision making. Existing works either involve rebuilding Gaussian process surrogates from scratch for each objective in each new problem encountered, or rely on extensive past domain experiments for pre-training deep learning models, making them hard to generalize and impractical to cope with various emerging applications in the real world. To address this issue, we propose a new paradigm named FoMEMO (Foundation Models for Expensive Multi-objective Optimization), which enables the establishment of a foundation model conditioned on any domain trajectory and user preference, and facilitates fast in-context optimization based on the predicted preference-wise aggregation posteriors. Rather than accessing extensive domain experiments in the real world, we demonstrate that pre-training the foundation model with a diverse set of hundreds of millions of synthetic data can lead to superior adaptability to unknown problems, without necessitating any subsequent model training or updates in the optimization process. We evaluate our method across a variety of synthetic benchmarks and real-word applications, and demonstrate its superior generality and competitive performance compared to existing methods.
