Interpretable Vision-Language Survival Analysis with Ordinal Inductive Bias for Computational Pathology

Histopathology Whole-Slide Images (WSIs) provide an important tool to assess cancer prognosis in computational pathology (CPATH). While existing survival analysis (SA) approaches have made exciting progress, they are generally limited to adopting highly-expressive network architectures and only coarse-grained patient-level labels to learn visual prognostic representations from gigapixel WSIs. Such learning paradigm suffers from critical performance bottlenecks, when facing present scarce training data and standard multi-instance learning (MIL) framework in CPATH. To overcome it, this paper, for the first time, proposes a new Vision-Language-based SA (VLSA) paradigm. Concretely, (1) VLSA is driven by pathology VL foundation models. It no longer relies on high-capability networks and shows the advantage of data efficiency. (2) In vision-end, VLSA encodes textual prognostic prior and then employs it as auxiliary signals to guide the aggregating of visual prognostic features at instance level, thereby compensating for the weak supervision in MIL. Moreover, given the characteristics of SA, we propose i) ordinal survival prompt learning to transform continuous survival labels into textual prompts; and ii) ordinal incidence function as prediction target to make SA compatible with VL-based prediction. Notably, VLSA's predictions can be interpreted intuitively by our Shapley values-based method. The extensive experiments on five datasets confirm the effectiveness of our scheme. Our VLSA could pave a new way for SA in CPATH by offering weakly-supervised MIL an effective means to learn valuable prognostic clues from gigapixel WSIs. AdvMIL: Adversarial Multiple Instance Learning for the Survival Analysis on Whole-Slide Images

The survival analysis on histological whole-slide images (WSIs) is one of the most important means to estimate patient prognosis. Although many weakly-supervised deep learning models have been developed for gigapixel WSIs, their potential is generally restricted by classical survival analysis rules and fully-supervised learning requirements. As a result, these models provide patients only with a completely-certain point estimation of time-to-event, and they could only learn from the labeled WSI data currently at a small scale. To tackle these problems, we propose a novel adversarial multiple instance learning (AdvMIL) framework. This framework is based on adversarial time-to-event modeling, and integrates the multiple instance learning (MIL) that is much necessary for WSI representation learning. It is a plug-and-play one, so that most existing MIL-based end-to-end methods can be easily upgraded by applying this framework, gaining the improved abilities of survival distribution estimation and semi-supervised learning. Our extensive experiments show that AdvMIL not only could often bring performance improvement to mainstream WSI survival analysis methods at a relatively low computational cost, but also enables these methods to effectively utilize unlabeled data via semi-supervised learning. Moreover, it is observed that AdvMIL could help improving the robustness of models against patch occlusion and two representative image noises. The proposed AdvMIL framework could promote the research of survival analysis in computational pathology with its novel adversarial MIL paradigm.

MiRD: Reliable Set-Valued Prediction for Open-Ended Question Answering via Miscoverage Risk Decomposition

Reliable set-valued prediction provides a principled way to mitigate hallucinations in open-ended question answering (QA), yet existing conformal approaches typically rely on a fragile premise: finite sampling must already produce at least one admissible candidate, or calibration examples violating this condition are discarded. In this paper, we introduce MiRD, a two-stage framework that decomposes overall miscoverage into sampling failure and conditional selection failure. In Stage I, MiRD establishes an expectation-level marginal upper bound on the probability that finite sampling produces no admissible answer under a fixed budget. In Stage II, conditioned on sampling success, MiRD calibrates a conformal selection threshold using admission-correlated nonconformity scores defined over the full calibration set, thereby preserving calibration-set integrity. Across three open-ended QA datasets and eight models, MiRD controls sampling risk, conditional selection risk, and overall miscoverage, while yielding tighter first-stage bounds than PAC-style alternatives and more adaptive prediction sets than successful-only calibration.

DSCA: A Dual-Stream Network with Cross-Attention on Whole-Slide Image Pyramids for Cancer Prognosis

The cancer prognosis on gigapixel Whole-Slide Images (WSIs) has always been a challenging task. To further enhance WSI visual representations, existing methods have explored image pyramids, instead of single-resolution images, in WSIs. In spite of this, they still face two major problems: high computational cost and the unnoticed semantical gap in multi-resolution feature fusion. To tackle these problems, this paper proposes to efficiently exploit WSI pyramids from a new perspective, the dual-stream network with cross-attention (DSCA). Our key idea is to utilize two sub-streams to process the WSI patches with two resolutions, where a square pooling is devised in a high-resolution stream to significantly reduce computational costs, and a cross-attention-based method is proposed to properly handle the fusion of dual-stream features. We validate our DSCA on three publicly-available datasets with a total number of 3,101 WSIs from 1,911 patients. Our experiments and ablation studies verify that (i) the proposed DSCA could outperform existing state-of-the-art methods in cancer prognosis, by an average C-Index improvement of around 4.6%; (ii) our DSCA network is more efficient in computation -- it has more learnable parameters (6.31M vs. 860.18K) but less computational costs (2.51G vs. 4.94G), compared to a typical existing multi-resolution network. (iii) the key components of DSCA, dual-stream and cross-attention, indeed contribute to our model's performance, gaining an average C-Index rise of around 2.0% while maintaining a relatively-small computational load. Our DSCA could serve as an alternative and effective tool for WSI-based cancer prognosis.

Why Misinformation is Created? Detecting them by Integrating Intent Features

Various social media platforms, e.g., Twitter and Reddit, allow people to disseminate a plethora of information more efficiently and conveniently. However, they are inevitably full of misinformation, causing damage to diverse aspects of our daily lives. To reduce the negative impact, timely identification of misinformation, namely Misinformation Detection (MD), has become an active research topic receiving widespread attention. As a complex phenomenon, the veracity of an article is influenced by various aspects. In this paper, we are inspired by the opposition of intents between misinformation and real information. Accordingly, we propose to reason the intent of articles and form the corresponding intent features to promote the veracity discrimination of article features. To achieve this, we build a hierarchy of a set of intents for both misinformation and real information by referring to the existing psychological theories, and we apply it to reason the intent of articles by progressively generating binary answers with an encoder-decoder structure. We form the corresponding intent features and integrate it with the token features to achieve more discriminative article features for MD. Upon these ideas, we suggest a novel MD method, namely Detecting Misinformation by Integrating Intent featuRes (DM-INTER). To evaluate the performance of DM-INTER, we conduct extensive experiments on benchmark MD datasets. The experimental results validate that DM-INTER can outperform the existing baseline MD methods.

Wavelet-based Mamba with Fourier Adjustment for Low-light Image Enhancement

Frequency information (e.g., Discrete Wavelet Transform and Fast Fourier Transform) has been widely applied to solve the issue of Low-Light Image Enhancement (LLIE). However, existing frequency-based models primarily operate in the simple wavelet or Fourier space of images, which lacks utilization of valid global and local information in each space. We found that wavelet frequency information is more sensitive to global brightness due to its low-frequency component while Fourier frequency information is more sensitive to local details due to its phase component. In order to achieve superior preliminary brightness enhancement by optimally integrating spatial channel information with low-frequency components in the wavelet transform, we introduce channel-wise Mamba, which compensates for the long-range dependencies of CNNs and has lower complexity compared to Diffusion and Transformer models. So in this work, we propose a novel Wavelet-based Mamba with Fourier Adjustment model called WalMaFa, consisting of a Wavelet-based Mamba Block (WMB) and a Fast Fourier Adjustment Block (FFAB). We employ an Encoder-Latent-Decoder structure to accomplish the end-to-end transformation. Specifically, WMB is adopted in the Encoder and Decoder to enhance global brightness while FFAB is adopted in the Latent to fine-tune local texture details and alleviate ambiguity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed WalMaFa achieves state-of-the-art performance with fewer computational resources and faster speed. CeCNN: Copula-enhanced convolutional neural networks in joint prediction of refraction error and axial length based on ultra-widefield fundus images

The ultra-widefield (UWF) fundus image is an attractive 3D biomarker in AI-aided myopia screening because it provides much richer myopia-related information. Though axial length (AL) has been acknowledged to be highly related to the two key targets of myopia screening, Spherical Equivalence (SE) measurement and high myopia diagnosis, its prediction based on the UWF fundus image is rarely considered. To save the high expense and time costs of measuring SE and AL, we propose the Copula-enhanced Convolutional Neural Network (CeCNN), a one-stop UWF-based ophthalmic AI framework to jointly predict SE, AL, and myopia status. The CeCNN formulates a multiresponse regression that relates multiple dependent discrete-continuous responses and the image covariate, where the nonlinearity of the association is modeled by a backbone CNN. To thoroughly describe the dependence structure among the responses, we model and incorporate the conditional dependence among responses in a CNN through a new copula-likelihood loss. We provide statistical interpretations of the conditional dependence among responses, and reveal that such dependence is beyond the dependence explained by the image covariate. We heuristically justify that the proposed loss can enhance the estimation efficiency of the CNN weights. We apply the CeCNN to the UWF dataset collected by us and demonstrate that the CeCNN sharply enhances the predictive capability of various backbone CNNs. Our study evidences the ophthalmology view that besides SE, AL is also an important measure to myopia.

Set-Valued Prediction for Large Language Models with Feasibility-Aware Coverage Guarantees

Large language models (LLMs) inherently operate over a large generation space, yet conventional usage typically reports the most likely generation (MLG) as a point prediction, which underestimates the model's capability: although the top-ranked response can be incorrect, valid answers may still exist within the broader output space and can potentially be discovered through repeated sampling. This observation motivates moving from point prediction to set-valued prediction, where the model produces a set of candidate responses rather than a single MLG. In this paper, we propose a principled framework for set-valued prediction, which provides feasibility-aware coverage guarantees. We show that, given the finite-sampling nature of LLM generation, coverage is not always achievable: even with multiple samplings, LLMs may fail to yield an acceptable response for certain questions within the sampled candidate set. To address this, we establish a minimum achievable risk level (MRL), below which statistical coverage guarantees cannot be satisfied. Building on this insight, we then develop a data-driven calibration procedure that constructs prediction sets from sampled responses by estimating a rigorous threshold, ensuring that the resulting set contains a correct answer with a desired probability whenever the target risk level is feasible. Extensive experiments on six language generation tasks with five LLMs demonstrate both the statistical validity and the predictive efficiency of our framework.

OU-CoViT: Copula-Enhanced Bi-Channel Multi-Task Vision Transformers with Dual Adaptation for OU-UWF Images

Myopia screening using cutting-edge ultra-widefield (UWF) fundus imaging and joint modeling of multiple discrete and continuous clinical scores presents a promising new paradigm for multi-task problems in Ophthalmology. The bi-channel framework that arises from the Ophthalmic phenomenon of ``interocular asymmetries'' of both eyes (OU) calls for new employment on the SOTA transformer-based models. However, the application of copula models for multiple mixed discrete-continuous labels on deep learning (DL) is challenging. Moreover, the application of advanced large transformer-based models to small medical datasets is challenging due to overfitting and computational resource constraints. To resolve these challenges, we propose OU-CoViT: a novel Copula-Enhanced Bi-Channel Multi-Task Vision Transformers with Dual Adaptation for OU-UWF images, which can i) incorporate conditional correlation information across multiple discrete and continuous labels within a deep learning framework (by deriving the closed form of a novel Copula Loss); ii) take OU inputs subject to both high correlation and interocular asymmetries using a bi-channel model with dual adaptation; and iii) enable the adaptation of large vision transformer (ViT) models to small medical datasets. Solid experiments demonstrate that OU-CoViT significantly improves prediction performance compared to single-channel baseline models with empirical loss. Furthermore, the novel architecture of OU-CoViT allows generalizability and extensions of our dual adaptation and Copula Loss to various ViT variants and large DL models on small medical datasets. Our approach opens up new possibilities for joint modeling of heterogeneous multi-channel input and mixed discrete-continuous clinical scores in medical practices and has the potential to advance AI-assisted clinical decision-making in various medical domains beyond Ophthalmology.

OUCopula: Bi-Channel Multi-Label Copula-Enhanced Adapter-Based CNN for Myopia Screening Based on OU-UWF Images

Myopia screening using cutting-edge ultra-widefield (UWF) fundus imaging is potentially significant for ophthalmic outcomes. Current multidisciplinary research between ophthalmology and deep learning (DL) concentrates primarily on disease classification and diagnosis using single-eye images, largely ignoring joint modeling and prediction for Oculus Uterque (OU, both eyes). Inspired by the complex relationships between OU and the high correlation between the (continuous) outcome labels (Spherical Equivalent and Axial Length), we propose a framework of copula-enhanced adapter convolutional neural network (CNN) learning with OU UWF fundus images (OUCopula) for joint prediction of multiple clinical scores. We design a novel bi-channel multi-label CNN that can (1) take bi-channel image inputs subject to both high correlation and heterogeneity (by sharing the same backbone network and employing adapters to parameterize the channel-wise discrepancy), and (2) incorporate correlation information between continuous output labels (using a copula). Solid experiments show that OUCopula achieves satisfactory performance in myopia score prediction compared to backbone models. Moreover, OUCopula can far exceed the performance of models constructed for single-eye inputs. Importantly, our study also hints at the potential extension of the bi-channel model to a multi-channel paradigm and the generalizability of OUCopula across various backbone CNNs.

MDE-Edit: Masked Dual-Editing for Multi-Object Image Editing via Diffusion Models

Multi-object editing aims to modify multiple objects or regions in complex scenes while preserving structural coherence. This task faces significant challenges in scenarios involving overlapping or interacting objects: (1) Inaccurate localization of target objects due to attention misalignment, leading to incomplete or misplaced edits; (2) Attribute-object mismatch, where color or texture changes fail to align with intended regions due to cross-attention leakage, creating semantic conflicts (\textit{e.g.}, color bleeding into non-target areas). Existing methods struggle with these challenges: approaches relying on global cross-attention mechanisms suffer from attention dilution and spatial interference between objects, while mask-based methods fail to bind attributes to geometrically accurate regions due to feature entanglement in multi-object scenarios. To address these limitations, we propose a training-free, inference-stage optimization approach that enables precise localized image manipulation in complex multi-object scenes, named MDE-Edit. MDE-Edit optimizes the noise latent feature in diffusion models via two key losses: Object Alignment Loss (OAL) aligns multi-layer cross-attention with segmentation masks for precise object positioning, and Color Consistency Loss (CCL) amplifies target attribute attention within masks while suppressing leakage to adjacent regions. This dual-loss design ensures localized and coherent multi-object edits. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MDE-Edit outperforms state-of-the-art methods in editing accuracy and visual quality, offering a robust solution for complex multi-object image manipulation tasks.

AdaptLIL: A Gaze-Adaptive Visualization for Ontology Mapping

Symbolic Planning and Multi-Agent Path Finding in Extremely Dense Environments with Movable Obstacles

We introduce the Block Rearrangement Problem (BRaP), a challenging component of large warehouse management which involves rearranging storage blocks within dense grids to achieve a target state. We formally define the BRaP as a graph search problem. Building on intuitions from sliding puzzle problems, we propose five search-based solution algorithms, leveraging joint configuration space search, classical planning, multi-agent pathfinding, and expert heuristics. We evaluate the five approaches empirically for plan quality and scalability. Despite the exponential relation between search space size and block number, our methods demonstrate efficiency in creating rearrangement plans for deeply buried blocks in up to 80x80 grids.

Large Foundation Model for Ads Recommendation

Online advertising relies on accurate recommendation models, with recent advances using pre-trained large-scale foundation models (LFMs) to capture users' general interests across multiple scenarios and tasks. However, existing methods have critical limitations: they extract and transfer only user representations (URs), ignoring valuable item representations (IRs) and user-item cross representations (CRs); and they simply use a UR as a feature in downstream applications, which fails to bridge upstream-downstream gaps and overlooks more transfer granularities. In this paper, we propose LFM4Ads, an All-Representation Multi-Granularity transfer framework for ads recommendation. It first comprehensively transfers URs, IRs, and CRs, i.e., all available representations in the pre-trained foundation model. To effectively utilize the CRs, it identifies the optimal extraction layer and aggregates them into transferable coarse-grained forms. Furthermore, we enhance the transferability via multi-granularity mechanisms: non-linear adapters for feature-level transfer, an Isomorphic Interaction Module for module-level transfer, and Standalone Retrieval for model-level transfer. LFM4Ads has been successfully deployed in Tencent's industrial-scale advertising platform, processing tens of billions of daily samples while maintaining terabyte-scale model parameters with billions of sparse embedding keys across approximately two thousand features. Since its production deployment in Q4 2024, LFM4Ads has achieved 10+ successful production launches across various advertising scenarios, including primary ones like Weixin Moments and Channels. These launches achieve an overall GMV lift of 2.45% across the entire platform, translating to estimated annual revenue increases in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Remember Past, Anticipate Future: Learning Continual Multimodal Misinformation Detectors

Nowadays, misinformation articles, especially multimodal ones, are widely spread on social media platforms and cause serious negative effects. To control their propagation, Multimodal Misinformation Detection (MMD) becomes an active topic in the community to automatically identify misinformation. Previous MMD methods focus on supervising detectors by collecting offline data. However, in real-world scenarios, new events always continually emerge, making MMD models trained on offline data consistently outdated and ineffective. To address this issue, training MMD models under online data streams is an alternative, inducing an emerging task named continual MMD. Unfortunately, it is hindered by two major challenges. First, training on new data consistently decreases the detection performance on past data, named past knowledge forgetting. Second, the social environment constantly evolves over time, affecting the generalization on future data. To alleviate these challenges, we propose to remember past knowledge by isolating interference between event-specific parameters with a Dirichlet process-based mixture-of-expert structure, and anticipate future environmental distributions by learning a continuous-time dynamics model. Accordingly, we induce a new continual MMD method DAEDCMD. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DAEDCMD can consistently and significantly outperform the compared methods, including six MMD baselines and three continual learning methods.

Robust Misinformation Detection by Visiting Potential Commonsense Conflict

The development of Internet technology has led to an increased prevalence of misinformation, causing severe negative effects across diverse domains. To mitigate this challenge, Misinformation Detection (MD), aiming to detect online misinformation automatically, emerges as a rapidly growing research topic in the community. In this paper, we propose a novel plug-and-play augmentation method for the MD task, namely Misinformation Detection with Potential Commonsense Conflict (MD-PCC). We take inspiration from the prior studies indicating that fake articles are more likely to involve commonsense conflict. Accordingly, we construct commonsense expressions for articles, serving to express potential commonsense conflicts inferred by the difference between extracted commonsense triplet and golden ones inferred by the well-established commonsense reasoning tool COMET. These expressions are then specified for each article as augmentation. Any specific MD methods can be then trained on those commonsense-augmented articles. Besides, we also collect a novel commonsense-oriented dataset named CoMis, whose all fake articles are caused by commonsense conflict. We integrate MD-PCC with various existing MD backbones and compare them across both 4 public benchmark datasets and CoMis. Empirical results demonstrate that MD-PCC can consistently outperform the existing MD baselines.

CeViT: Copula-Enhanced Vision Transformer in multi-task learning and bi-group image covariates with an application to myopia screening

We aim to assist image-based myopia screening by resolving two longstanding problems, "how to integrate the information of ocular images of a pair of eyes" and "how to incorporate the inherent dependence among high-myopia status and axial length for both eyes." The classification-regression task is modeled as a novel 4-dimensional muti-response regression, where discrete responses are allowed, that relates to two dependent 3rd-order tensors (3D ultrawide-field fundus images). We present a Vision Transformer-based bi-channel architecture, named CeViT, where the common features of a pair of eyes are extracted via a shared Transformer encoder, and the interocular asymmetries are modeled through separated multilayer perceptron heads. Statistically, we model the conditional dependence among mixture of discrete-continuous responses given the image covariates by a so-called copula loss. We establish a new theoretical framework regarding fine-tuning on CeViT based on latent representations, allowing the black-box fine-tuning procedure interpretable and guaranteeing higher relative efficiency of fine-tuning weight estimation in the asymptotic setting. We apply CeViT to an annotated ultrawide-field fundus image dataset collected by Shanghai Eye \& ENT Hospital, demonstrating that CeViT enhances the baseline model in both accuracy of classifying high-myopia and prediction of AL on both eyes.

Simultaneous Human-robot Matching and Routing for Multi-robot Tour Guiding under Time Uncertainty

This work presents a framework for multi-robot tour guidance in a partially known environment with uncertainty, such as a museum. In the proposed centralized multi-robot planner, a simultaneous matching and routing problem (SMRP) is formulated to match the humans with robot guides according to their selected places of interest (POIs) and generate the routes and schedules for the robots according to uncertain spatial and time estimation. A large neighborhood search algorithm is developed to efficiently find sub-optimal low-cost solutions for the SMRP. The scalability and optimality of the multi-robot planner are evaluated computationally under different numbers of humans, robots, and POIs. The largest case tested involves 50 robots, 250 humans, and 50 POIs. Then, a photo-realistic multi-robot simulation platform was developed based on Habitat-AI to verify the tour guiding performance in an uncertain indoor environment. Results demonstrate that the proposed centralized tour planner is scalable, makes a smooth trade-off in the plans under different environmental constraints, and can lead to robust performance with inaccurate uncertainty estimations (within a certain margin).

Robust Task Scheduling for Heterogeneous Robot Teams under Capability Uncertainty

This paper develops a stochastic programming framework for multi-agent systems where task decomposition, assignment, and scheduling problems are simultaneously optimized. The framework can be applied to heterogeneous mobile robot teams with distributed sub-tasks. Examples include pandemic robotic service coordination, explore and rescue, and delivery systems with heterogeneous vehicles. Due to their inherent flexibility and robustness, multi-agent systems are applied in a growing range of real-world problems that involve heterogeneous tasks and uncertain information. Most previous works assume one fixed way to decompose a task into roles that can later be assigned to the agents. This assumption is not valid for a complex task where the roles can vary and multiple decomposition structures exist. Meanwhile, it is unclear how uncertainties in task requirements and agent capabilities can be systematically quantified and optimized under a multi-agent system setting. A representation for complex tasks is proposed: agent capabilities are represented as a vector of random distributions, and task requirements are verified by a generalizable binary function. The conditional value at risk (CVaR) is chosen as a metric in the objective function to generate robust plans. An efficient algorithm is described to solve the model, and the whole framework is evaluated in two different practical test cases: capture-the-flag and robotic service coordination during a pandemic (e.g., COVID-19). Results demonstrate that the framework is generalizable, scalable up to 140 agents and 40 tasks for the example test cases, and provides low-cost plans that ensure a high probability of success.

Robust localization for planar moving robot in changing environment: A perspective on density of correspondence and depth

Visual localization for planar moving robot is important to various indoor service robotic applications. To handle the textureless areas and frequent human activities in indoor environments, a novel robust visual localization algorithm which leverages dense correspondence and sparse depth for planar moving robot is proposed. The key component is a minimal solution which computes the absolute camera pose with one 3D-2D correspondence and one 2D-2D correspondence. The advantages are obvious in two aspects. First, the robustness is enhanced as the sample set for pose estimation is maximal by utilizing all correspondences with or without depth. Second, no extra effort for dense map construction is required to exploit dense correspondences for handling textureless and repetitive texture scenes. That is meaningful as building a dense map is computational expensive especially in large scale. Moreover, a probabilistic analysis among different solutions is presented and an automatic solution selection mechanism is designed to maximize the success rate by selecting appropriate solutions in different environmental characteristics. Finally, a complete visual localization pipeline considering situations from the perspective of correspondence and depth density is summarized and validated on both simulation and public real-world indoor localization dataset. Heterogeneous Vehicle Routing and Teaming with Gaussian Distributed Energy Uncertainty

For robot swarms operating on complex missions in an uncertain environment, it is important that the decision-making algorithm considers both heterogeneity and uncertainty. This paper presents a stochastic programming framework for the vehicle routing problem with stochastic travel energy costs and heterogeneous vehicles and tasks. We represent the heterogeneity as linear constraints, estimate the uncertain energy cost through Gaussian process regression, formulate this stochasticity as chance constraints or stochastic recourse costs, and then solve the stochastic programs using branch and cut algorithms to minimize the expected energy cost. The performance and practicality are demonstrated through extensive computational experiments and a practical test case.

Weak Texture Information Map Guided Image Super-resolution with Deep Residual Networks

Single image super-resolution (SISR) is an image processing task which obtains high-resolution (HR) image from a low-resolution (LR) image. Recently, due to the capability in feature extraction, a series of deep learning methods have brought important crucial improvement for SISR. However, we observe that no matter how deeper the networks are designed, they usually do not have good generalization ability, which leads to the fact that almost all of existing SR methods have poor performances on restoration of the weak texture details. To solve these problems, we propose a weak texture information map guided image super-resolution with deep residual networks. It contains three sub-networks, one main network which extracts the main features and fuses weak texture details, another two auxiliary networks extract the weak texture details fallen in the main network. Two part of networks work cooperatively, the auxiliary networks predict and integrates week texture information into the main network, which is conducive to the main network learning more inconspicuous details. Experiments results demonstrate that our method's performs achieve the state-of-the-art quantitatively. Specifically, the image super-resolution results of our method own more weak texture details.

Globally optimal consensus maximization for robust visual inertial localization in point and line map

Map based visual inertial localization is a crucial step to reduce the drift in state estimation of mobile robots. The underlying problem for localization is to estimate the pose from a set of 3D-2D feature correspondences, of which the main challenge is the presence of outliers, especially in changing environment. In this paper, we propose a robust solution based on efficient global optimization of the consensus maximization problem, which is insensitive to high percentage of outliers. We first introduce translation invariant measurements (TIMs) for both points and lines to decouple the consensus maximization problem into rotation and translation subproblems, allowing for a two-stage solver with reduced solution dimensions. Then we show that (i) the rotation can be calculated by minimizing TIMs using only 1-dimensional branch-and-bound (BnB), (ii) the translation can be found by running 1-dimensional search for three times with prioritized progressive voting. Compared with the popular randomized solver, our solver achieves deterministic global convergence without depending on an initial value. While compared with existing BnB based methods, ours is exponentially faster. Finally, by evaluating the performance on both simulation and real-world datasets, our approach gives accurate pose even when there are 90\% outliers (only 2 inliers).

Low-Power Computer Vision: Status, Challenges, Opportunities

Computer vision has achieved impressive progress in recent years. Meanwhile, mobile phones have become the primary computing platforms for millions of people. In addition to mobile phones, many autonomous systems rely on visual data for making decisions and some of these systems have limited energy (such as unmanned aerial vehicles also called drones and mobile robots). These systems rely on batteries and energy efficiency is critical. This article serves two main purposes: (1) Examine the state-of-the-art for low-power solutions to detect objects in images. Since 2015, the IEEE Annual International Low-Power Image Recognition Challenge (LPIRC) has been held to identify the most energy-efficient computer vision solutions. This article summarizes 2018 winners' solutions. (2) Suggest directions for research as well as opportunities for low-power computer vision.

LiDAR-Camera Calibration under Arbitrary Configurations: Observability and Methods

LiDAR-camera calibration is a precondition for many heterogeneous systems that fuse data from LiDAR and camera. However, the constraint from common field of view and the requirement for strict time synchronization make the calibration a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a novel LiDAR-camera calibration method aiming to eliminate these two constraints. Specifically, we capture a scan of 3D LiDAR when both the environment and the sensors are stationary, then move the camera to reconstruct the 3D environment using the sequentially obtained images. Finally, we align 3D visual points to the laser scan based on tightly couple graph optimization method to calculate the extrinsic parameters between LiDAR and camera. Under this design, the configuration of these two sensors are free from the common field of view constraint owing to the extended view from the moving camera. And we also eliminate the requirement for strict time synchronization as we only use the single scan of laser data when the sensors are stationary. We theoretically derive the conditions of minimal observability for our method and prove that the accuracy of calibration is improved by collecting more observations from multiple scattered calibration targets. We validate our method on both simulation platform and real-world datasets. Experiments show that our method achieves higher accuracy than other comparable methods, which is in accordance with our theoretical analysis. In addition, the proposed method is beneficial to not only plane measurement error based chessboard, but also other point measurement error based calibration targets, such as boxes and polygonal boards.

Physics Enhanced Artificial Intelligence

We propose that intelligently combining models from the domains of Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning with Physical and Expert models will yield a more "trustworthy" model than any one model from a single domain, given a complex and narrow enough problem. Based on mean-variance portfolio theory and bias-variance trade-off analysis, we prove combining models from various domains produces a model that has lower risk, increasing user trust. We call such combined models - physics enhanced artificial intelligence (PEAI), and suggest use cases for PEAI.

2-Entity RANSAC for robust visual localization in changing environment

Visual localization has attracted considerable attention due to its low-cost and stable sensor, which is desired in many applications, such as autonomous driving, inspection robots and unmanned aerial vehicles. However, current visual localization methods still struggle with environmental changes across weathers and seasons, as there is significant appearance variation between the map and the query image. The crucial challenge in this situation is that the percentage of outliers, i.e. incorrect feature matches, is high. In this paper, we derive minimal closed form solutions for 3D-2D localization with the aid of inertial measurements, using only 2 pairs of point matches or 1 pair of point match and 1 pair of line match. These solutions are further utilized in the proposed 2-entity RANSAC, which is more robust to outliers as both line and point features can be used simultaneously and the number of matches required for pose calculation is reduced. Furthermore, we introduce three feature sampling strategies with different advantages, enabling an automatic selection mechanism. With the mechanism, our 2-entity RANSAC can be adaptive to the environments with different distribution of feature types in different segments. Finally, we evaluate the method on both synthetic and real-world datasets, validating its performance and effectiveness in inter-session scenarios.

RaD-VIO: Rangefinder-aided Downward Visual-Inertial Odometry

State-of-the-art forward facing monocular visual-inertial odometry algorithms are often brittle in practice, especially whilst dealing with initialisation and motion in directions that render the state unobservable. In such cases having a reliable complementary odometry algorithm enables robust and resilient flight. Using the common local planarity assumption, we present a fast, dense, and direct frame-to-frame visual-inertial odometry algorithm for downward facing cameras that minimises a joint cost function involving a homography based photometric cost and an IMU regularisation term. Via extensive evaluation in a variety of scenarios we demonstrate superior performance than existing state-of-the-art downward facing odometry algorithms for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs).

2018 Low-Power Image Recognition Challenge

The Low-Power Image Recognition Challenge (LPIRC, https://rebootingcomputing.ieee.org/lpirc) is an annual competition started in 2015. The competition identifies the best technologies that can classify and detect objects in images efficiently (short execution time and low energy consumption) and accurately (high precision). Over the four years, the winners' scores have improved more than 24 times. As computer vision is widely used in many battery-powered systems (such as drones and mobile phones), the need for low-power computer vision will become increasingly important. This paper summarizes LPIRC 2018 by describing the three different tracks and the winners' solutions.

Wavelet Video Coding Algorithm Based on Energy Weighted Significance Probability Balancing Tree

This work presents a 3-D wavelet video coding algorithm. By analyzing the contribution of each biorthogonal wavelet basis to reconstructed signal's energy, we weight each wavelet subband according to its basis energy. Based on distribution of weighted coefficients, we further discuss a 3-D wavelet tree structure named \textbf{significance probability balancing tree}, which places the coefficients with similar probabilities of being significant on the same layer. It is implemented by using hybrid spatial orientation tree and temporal-domain block tree. Subsequently, a novel 3-D wavelet video coding algorithm is proposed based on the energy-weighted significance probability balancing tree. Experimental results illustrate that our algorithm always achieves good reconstruction quality for different classes of video sequences. Compared with asymmetric 3-D orientation tree, the average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) gain of our algorithm are 1.24dB, 2.54dB and 2.57dB for luminance (Y) and chrominance (U,V) components, respectively. Compared with temporal-spatial orientation tree algorithm, our algorithm gains 0.38dB, 2.92dB and 2.39dB higher PSNR separately for Y, U, and V components. In addition, the proposed algorithm requires lower computation cost than those of the above two algorithms.

Patch-based Contour Prior Image Denoising for Salt and Pepper Noise

The salt and pepper noise brings a significant challenge to image denoising technology, i.e. how to removal the noise clearly and retain the details effectively? In this paper, we propose a patch-based contour prior denoising approach for salt and pepper noise. First, noisy image is cut into patches as basic representation unit, a discrete total variation model is designed to extract contour structures; Second, a weighted Euclidean distance is designed to search the most similar patches, then, corresponding contour stencils are extracted from these similar patches; At the last, we build filter from contour stencils in the framework of regression. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed method is competitive with the state-of-the-art methods in terms of the peak signal-to-noise (PSNR) and visual effects.

A Convolutional Neural Networks Denoising Approach for Salt and Pepper Noise

The salt and pepper noise, especially the one with extremely high percentage of impulses, brings a significant challenge to image denoising. In this paper, we propose a non-local switching filter convolutional neural network denoising algorithm, named NLSF-CNN, for salt and pepper noise. As its name suggested, our NLSF-CNN consists of two steps, i.e., a NLSF processing step and a CNN training step. First, we develop a NLSF pre-processing step for noisy images using non-local information. Then, the pre-processed images are divided into patches and used for CNN training, leading to a CNN denoising model for future noisy images. We conduct a number of experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of NLSF-CNN. Experimental results show that NLSF-CNN outperforms the state-of-the-art denoising algorithms with a few training images.

A salt and pepper noise image denoising method based on the generative classification

In this paper, an image denoising algorithm is proposed for salt and pepper noise. First, a generative model is built on a patch as a basic unit and then the algorithm locates the image noise within that patch in order to better describe the patch and obtain better subsequent clustering. Second, the algorithm classifies patches using a generative clustering method, thus providing additional similarity information for noise repair and suppressing the interference of noise, abandoning those categories that consist of a smaller number of patches. Finally, the algorithm builds a non-local switching filter to remove the salt and pepper noise. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively denoises salt and pepper noise of various densities. It obtains a better visual quality and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio score than several state-of-the-art algorithms. In short, our algorithm uses a noisy patch as the basic unit, a patch clustering method to optimize the repair data set as well as obtain a better denoising effect, and provides a guideline for future denoising and repair methods.
