Predictive Moving Sample Method for Physics-Informed Neural Solvers of Time-Dependent PDEsBeining Xu, Bocheng Zhang, Haijun Yu et al.
Time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs) often develop sharp fronts, localized peaks, and other moving structures that occupy only a small portion of the space--time domain but dominate the approximation error. This makes fixed or uniformly sampled collocation strategies inefficient for physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), especially in high dimensions and over long-time prediction intervals. We propose the predictive moving sample method (PMSM), which builds on the moving sample method (MSM) in \cite{xu2026moving} by replacing its full time domain iterative training with a progressive time-stepping strategy and simplifying the velocity-field loss to further reduce the per-step cost. To improve practicality for long-time prediction, we further introduce the windowed-reset predictive moving sample method (WR-PMSM), which restricts extension training to an active time window and periodically resets the reference state, thereby reducing the growth of optimization cost while preserving global consistency through a final refinement stage. Across four representative benchmarks, PMSM consistently outperforms both standard PINNs and the original MSM under matched collocation budgets. These results suggest that transporting samples according to residual dynamics provides an effective and practical route to neural network solvers for time-dependent PDEs.

A Quantitative Approach to Understand Self-Supervised Models as Cross-lingual Feature ExtractorsShuyue Stella Li, Beining Xu, Xiangyu Zhang et al.
In this work, we study the features extracted by English self-supervised learning (SSL) models in cross-lingual contexts and propose a new metric to predict the quality of feature representations. Using automatic speech recognition (ASR) as a downstream task, we analyze the effect of model size, training objectives, and model architecture on the models' performance as a feature extractor for a set of topologically diverse corpora. We develop a novel metric, the Phonetic-Syntax Ratio (PSR), to measure the phonetic and synthetic information in the extracted representations using deep generalized canonical correlation analysis. Results show the contrastive loss in the wav2vec2.0 objective facilitates more effective cross-lingual feature extraction. There is a positive correlation between PSR scores and ASR performance, suggesting that phonetic information extracted by monolingual SSL models can be used for downstream tasks in cross-lingual settings. The proposed metric is an effective indicator of the quality of the representations and can be useful for model selection.

S$^2$-MLLM: Boosting Spatial Reasoning Capability of MLLMs for 3D Visual Grounding with Structural GuidanceBeining Xu, Siting Zhu, Zhao Jin et al.
3D Visual Grounding (3DVG) focuses on locating objects in 3D scenes based on natural language descriptions, serving as a fundamental task for embodied AI and robotics. Recent advances in Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have motivated research into extending them to 3DVG. However, MLLMs primarily process 2D visual inputs and struggle with understanding 3D spatial structure of scenes solely from these limited perspectives. Existing methods mainly utilize viewpoint-dependent rendering of reconstructed point clouds to provide explicit structural guidance for MLLMs in 3DVG tasks, leading to inefficiency and limited spatial reasoning. To address this issue, we propose S$^2$-MLLM, an efficient framework that enhances spatial reasoning in MLLMs through implicit spatial reasoning. We introduce a spatial guidance strategy that leverages the structure awareness of feed-forward 3D reconstruction. By acquiring 3D structural understanding during training, our model can implicitly reason about 3D scenes without relying on inefficient point cloud reconstruction. Moreover, we propose a structure-enhanced module (SE), which first employs intra-view and inter-view attention mechanisms to capture dependencies within views and correspondences across views. The module further integrates multi-level position encoding to associate visual representations with spatial positions and viewpoint information, enabling more accurate structural understanding. Extensive experiments demonstrate that S$^2$-MLLM unifies superior performance, generalization, and efficiency, achieving significant performance over existing methods across the ScanRefer, Nr3D, and Sr3D datasets. SGLoc: Semantic Localization System for Camera Pose Estimation from 3D Gaussian Splatting RepresentationBeining Xu, Siting Zhu, Hesheng Wang
We propose SGLoc, a novel localization system that directly regresses camera poses from 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) representation by leveraging semantic information. Our method utilizes the semantic relationship between 2D image and 3D scene representation to estimate the 6DoF pose without prior pose information. In this system, we introduce a multi-level pose regression strategy that progressively estimates and refines the pose of query image from the global 3DGS map, without requiring initial pose priors. Moreover, we introduce a semantic-based global retrieval algorithm that establishes correspondences between 2D (image) and 3D (3DGS map). By matching the extracted scene semantic descriptors of 2D query image and 3DGS semantic representation, we align the image with the local region of the global 3DGS map, thereby obtaining a coarse pose estimation. Subsequently, we refine the coarse pose by iteratively optimizing the difference between the query image and the rendered image from 3DGS. Our SGLoc demonstrates superior performance over baselines on 12scenes and 7scenes datasets, showing excellent capabilities in global localization without initial pose prior. Detecting Stealth Sycophancy in Mental-Health Dialogue with Dynamic Emotional Signature GraphsTianze Han, Beining Xu, Hanbo Zhang et al.
As conversational AI therapists are increasingly used in psychological support settings, reliable offline evaluation of therapeutic response quality remains an open problem. This paper studies multi-domain support-dialogue evaluation without relying on large language models as final judges. We use a direct LLM judge as a baseline that reads raw dialogue text and predicts whether the target response is harmful, productive, or neutral. We find that direct LLM judges and symmetric text-similarity metrics are poorly aligned with therapeutic quality because the target label depends on clinical direction: whether the response moves the user state toward regulation or reframing, leaves it broadly unchanged, or reinforces deterioration through higher risk affect or cognitive-distortion mass. To address this issue, we propose Dynamic Emotional Signature Graphs (DESG), a model-agnostic evaluator that represents dialogue windows with decoupled clinical states and scores them using asymmetric clinical geometry. We evaluate DESG on a constructed diagnostic stress-test benchmark of 3{,}000 dialogue windows from EmpatheticDialogues, ESConv, and CRADLE-Dialogue, covering peer support, counseling dialogue, and crisis-oriented interaction. On the 600-window held-out test aggregate, DESG-Ensemble achieves 0.9353 macro-F1, exceeding ConcatANN by 1.51 percentage points, BERTScore by 19.63 points, and TRACT by 33.81 points. Feature ablations, artifact controls, a 100-window blinded adjudicator audit, and qualitative disagreement cases indicate that the clinical state manifold is the main discriminative substrate, while graph-based trajectory components provide asymmetric scoring and interpretable diagnostics rather than serving as the sole source of performance.

Adaptable and Precise: Enterprise-Scenario LLM Function-Calling Capability Training PipelineGuancheng Zeng, Wentao Ding, Beining Xu et al.
Enterprises possess a vast array of API assets scattered across various functions, forming the backbone of existing business processes. By leveraging these APIs as functional tools, enterprises can design diverse, scenario-specific agent applications, driven by on-premise function-calling models as the core engine. However, generic models often fail to meet enterprise requirements in terms of computational efficiency, output accuracy, and stability, necessitating scenario-specific adaptation. In this paper, we propose a training pipeline for function-calling capabilities tailored to real-world business scenarios. This pipeline includes the synthesis and augmentation of scenario-specific function-calling data, model fine-tuning, and performance evaluation and analysis. Using this pipeline, we generated 1,260 fully AI-generated samples and 1,035 augmented manually-labeled samples in digital HR agent scenario. The Qwen2.5-Coder-7B-Instruct model was employed as the base model and fine-tuned using the LoRA method on four GPUs with 24GB VRAM. Our fine-tuned model demonstrated outstanding performance in evaluations and practical applications, surpassing GPT-4 and GPT-4o in accuracy on the test set. These results validate the reliability of the proposed pipeline for training scenario-specific function-calling models.

ViT3D Alignment of LLaMA3: 3D Medical Image Report GenerationSiyou Li, Beining Xu, Yihao Luo et al.
Automatic medical report generation (MRG), which aims to produce detailed text reports from medical images, has emerged as a critical task in this domain. MRG systems can enhance radiological workflows by reducing the time and effort required for report writing, thereby improving diagnostic efficiency. In this work, we present a novel approach for automatic MRG utilizing a multimodal large language model. Specifically, we employed the 3D Vision Transformer (ViT3D) image encoder introduced from M3D-CLIP to process 3D scans and use the Asclepius-Llama3-8B as the language model to generate the text reports by auto-regressive decoding. The experiment shows our model achieved an average Green score of 0.3 on the MRG task validation set and an average accuracy of 0.61 on the visual question answering (VQA) task validation set, outperforming the baseline model. Our approach demonstrates the effectiveness of the ViT3D alignment of LLaMA3 for automatic MRG and VQA tasks by tuning the model on a small dataset.

Understanding the Effects of RLHF on the Quality and Detectability of LLM-Generated TextsBeining Xu, Arkaitz Zubiaga
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated exceptional performance on a range of downstream NLP tasks by generating text that closely resembles human writing. However, the ease of achieving this similarity raises concerns from potential malicious uses at scale by bad actors, as LLM-generated text becomes increasingly difficult to discern from human text. Although detection methods have been developed to address this issue, bad actors can further manipulate LLM-generated texts to make them less detectable. In this work, we study how further editing texts with Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), which aligns model outputs with human preferences, affects (a) the quality of generated texts for two tasks, and (b) the performance of LLM-generated text detectors, looking at both training-based and zero-shot detection methods. Although RLHF improves the quality of LLM-generated texts, we find that it also tends to produce more detectable, lengthy, and repetitive outputs. Additionally, we observe that training-based detectors are vulnerable to short texts and to texts that incorporate code, whereas zero-shot detectors exhibit greater robustness.

TECP: Token-Entropy Conformal Prediction for LLMsBeining Xu, Yongming Lu
Uncertainty quantification (UQ) for open-ended language generation remains a critical yet underexplored challenge, especially under black-box constraints where internal model signals are inaccessible. In this paper, we introduce Token-Entropy Conformal Prediction (TECP), a novel framework that leverages token-level entropy as a logit-free, reference-free uncertainty measure and integrates it into a split conformal prediction (CP) pipeline to construct prediction sets with formal coverage guarantees. Unlike existing approaches that rely on semantic consistency heuristics or white-box features, TECP directly estimates epistemic uncertainty from the token entropy structure of sampled generations and calibrates uncertainty thresholds via CP quantiles to ensure provable error control. Empirical evaluations across six large language models and two benchmarks (CoQA and TriviaQA) demonstrate that TECP consistently achieves reliable coverage and compact prediction sets, outperforming prior self-consistency-based UQ methods. Our method provides a principled and efficient solution for trustworthy generation in black-box LLM settings.

IAG: Input-aware Backdoor Attack on VLMs for Visual GroundingJunxian Li, Beining Xu, Di Zhang
Vision-language models (VLMs) have shown significant advancements in tasks such as visual grounding, where they localize specific objects in images based on natural language queries and images. However, security issues in visual grounding tasks for VLMs remain underexplored, especially in the context of backdoor attacks. In this paper, we introduce a novel input-aware backdoor attack method, IAG, designed to manipulate the grounding behavior of VLMs. This attack forces the model to ground a specific target object in the input image, regardless of the user's query. We propose an adaptive trigger generator that embeds the semantic information of the attack target's description into the original image using a text-conditional U-Net, thereby overcoming the open-vocabulary attack challenge. To ensure the attack's stealthiness, we utilize a reconstruction loss to minimize visual discrepancies between poisoned and clean images. Additionally, we introduce a unified method for generating attack data. IAG is evaluated theoretically and empirically, demonstrating its feasibility and effectiveness. Notably, our ASR@0.5 on InternVL-2.5-8B reaches over 65\% on various testing sets. IAG also shows promising potential on manipulating Ferret-7B and LlaVA-1.5-7B with very little accuracy decrease on clean samples. Extensive specific experiments, such as ablation study and potential defense, also indicate the robustness and transferability of our attack.

Design and Evaluation of Deep Learning-Based Dual-Spectrum Image Fusion MethodsBeining Xu, Junxian Li
Visible images offer rich texture details, while infrared images emphasize salient targets. Fusing these complementary modalities enhances scene understanding, particularly for advanced vision tasks under challenging conditions. Recently, deep learning-based fusion methods have gained attention, but current evaluations primarily rely on general-purpose metrics without standardized benchmarks or downstream task performance. Additionally, the lack of well-developed dual-spectrum datasets and fair algorithm comparisons hinders progress. To address these gaps, we construct a high-quality dual-spectrum dataset captured in campus environments, comprising 1,369 well-aligned visible-infrared image pairs across four representative scenarios: daytime, nighttime, smoke occlusion, and underpasses. We also propose a comprehensive and fair evaluation framework that integrates fusion speed, general metrics, and object detection performance using the lang-segment-anything model to ensure fairness in downstream evaluation. Extensive experiments benchmark several state-of-the-art fusion algorithms under this framework. Results demonstrate that fusion models optimized for downstream tasks achieve superior performance in target detection, especially in low-light and occluded scenes. Notably, some algorithms that perform well on general metrics do not translate to strong downstream performance, highlighting limitations of current evaluation practices and validating the necessity of our proposed framework. The main contributions of this work are: (1)a campus-oriented dual-spectrum dataset with diverse and challenging scenes; (2) a task-aware, comprehensive evaluation framework; and (3) thorough comparative analysis of leading fusion methods across multiple datasets, offering insights for future development.
