Enhancing the QA Model through a Multi-domain Debiasing FrameworkYuefeng Wang, ChangJae Lee
Question-answering (QA) models have advanced significantly in machine reading comprehension but often exhibit biases that hinder their performance, particularly with complex queries in adversarial conditions. This study evaluates the ELECTRA-small model on the Stanford Question Answering Dataset (SQuAD) v1.1 and adversarial datasets AddSent and AddOneSent. By identifying errors related to lexical bias, numerical reasoning, and entity recognition, we develop a multi-domain debiasing framework incorporating knowledge distillation, debiasing techniques, and domain expansion. Our results demonstrate up to 2.6 percentage point improvements in Exact Match (EM) and F1 scores across all test sets, with gains in adversarial contexts. These findings highlight the potential of targeted bias mitigation strategies to enhance the robustness and reliability of natural language understanding systems.

From Keyboard to Chatbot: An AI-powered Integration Platform with Large-Language Models for Teaching Computational Thinking for Young ChildrenChangjae Lee, Jinjun Xiong
Teaching programming in early childhood (4-9) to enhance computational thinking has gained popularity in the recent movement of computer science for all. However, current practices ignore some fundamental issues resulting from young children's developmental readiness, such as the sustained capability to keyboarding, the decomposition of complex tasks to small tasks, the need for intuitive mapping from abstract programming to tangible outcomes, and the limited amount of screen time exposure. To address these issues in this paper, we present a novel methodology with an AI-powered integration platform to effectively teach computational thinking for young children. The system features a hybrid pedagogy that supports both the top-down and bottom-up approach for teaching computational thinking. Young children can describe their desired task in natural language, while the system can respond with an easy-to-understand program consisting of the right level of decomposed sub-tasks. A tangible robot can immediately execute the decomposed program and demonstrate the program's outcomes to young children. The system is equipped with an intelligent chatbot that can interact with young children through natural languages, and children can speak to the chatbot to complete all the needed programming tasks, while the chatbot orchestrates the execution of the program onto the robot. This would completely eliminates the need of keyboards for young children to program. By developing such a system, we aim to make the concept of computational thinking more accessible to young children, fostering a natural understanding of programming concepts without the need of explicit programming skills. Through the interactive experience provided by the robotic agent, our system seeks to engage children in an effective manner, contributing to the field of educational technology for early childhood computer science education.

SABER: A SQL-Compatible Semantic Document Processing System Based on Extended Relational AlgebraChangjae Lee, Zhuoyue Zhao, Jinjun Xiong
The emergence of large-language models (LLMs) has enabled a new class of semantic data processing systems (SDPSs) to support declarative queries against unstructured documents. Existing SDPSs are, however, lacking a unified algebraic foundation, making their queries difficult to compose, reason, and optimize. We propose a new semantic algebra, SABER (Semantic Algebra Based on Extended Relational algebra), opening the possibility of semantic operations' logical plan construction, optimization, and formal correctness guarantees. We further propose to implement SABER in a SQL-compatible syntax so that it natively supports mixed structured/unstructured data processing. With SABER, we showcase the feasibility of providing a unified interface for existing SDPSs so that it can effectively mix and match any semantically-compatible operator implementation from any SDPS, greatly enhancing SABER's applicability for community contributions.

Exploring Multimodal AI Reasoning for Meteorological Forecasting from Skew-T DiagramsChangJae Lee, Heecheol Yang, Jonghak Choi
Forecasting from atmospheric soundings is a fundamental task in operational meteorology, often requiring structured visual reasoning over Skew-T log-P diagrams by human forecasters. While recent advances in Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have shown promise in other scientific domains, their application to meteorological diagram interpretation remains largely unexplored. In this study, we present a lightweight AI assistant that interprets Skew-T diagrams using a small language model (LM) and a small VLM fine-tuned to emulate human forecasters. Using a curriculum learning framework, we first train the models to identify key atmospheric features from diagrams through visual question answering, followed by chain-of-thought reasoning tasks that estimate precipitation probability based on the derived visual groundings. Model inputs include either textual summaries or generated Skew-T diagrams derived from operational Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) forecasts, paired with three-hour precipitation observations from South Korea's Auto Weather Stations network. Evaluation results demonstrate that the fine-tuned VLM achieves skill comparable to an operational NWP model, despite relying solely on static atmospheric profiles. Ablation studies reveal that visual grounding and reasoning supervision are critical for performance, while attention map analysis confirms that the model learns to focus on relevant meteorological features. These findings highlight the potential of compact, interpretable multimodal models to support weather forecasting tasks. The approach offers a computationally efficient alternative to large-scale systems, and future work could extend it to more complex applications.

Large language models (LLMs) have attracted significant attention for their exceptional abilities in various natural language processing tasks, but they suffer from hallucinations that will cause performance degradation. One promising solution to improve the LLMs' performance is to ask LLMs to revise their answer after generation, a technique known as self-correction. Among the two types of self-correction, intrinsic self-correction is considered a promising direction because it does not utilize external knowledge. However, recent works doubt the validity of LLM's ability to conduct intrinsic self-correction. In this paper, we present a novel perspective on the intrinsic self-correction capabilities of LLMs through theoretical analyses and empirical experiments. In addition, we identify two critical factors for successful self-correction: zero temperature and fair prompts. Leveraging these factors, we demonstrate that intrinsic self-correction ability is exhibited across multiple existing LLMs. Our findings offer insights into the fundamental theories underlying the self-correction behavior of LLMs and remark on the importance of unbiased prompts and zero temperature settings in harnessing their full potential.
