Blockchain-based Digital Twins: Research Trends, Issues, and Future Challenges

Sabah Suhail, Rasheed Hussain, Raja Jurdak et al.

Industrial processes rely on sensory data for decision-making processes, risk assessment, and performance evaluation. Extracting actionable insights from the collected data calls for an infrastructure that can ensure the dissemination of trustworthy data. For the physical data to be trustworthy, it needs to be cross-validated through multiple sensor sources with overlapping fields of view. Cross-validated data can then be stored on the blockchain, to maintain its integrity and trustworthiness. Once trustworthy data is recorded on the blockchain, product lifecycle events can be fed into data-driven systems for process monitoring, diagnostics, and optimized control. In this regard, Digital Twins (DTs) can be leveraged to draw intelligent conclusions from data by identifying the faults and recommending precautionary measures ahead of critical events. Empowering DTs with blockchain in industrial use-cases targets key challenges of disparate data repositories, untrustworthy data dissemination, and the need for predictive maintenance. In this survey, while highlighting the key benefits of using blockchain-based DTs, we present a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art research results for blockchain-based DTs. Based on the current research trends, we discuss a trustworthy blockchain-based DTs framework. We highlight the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in blockchain-based DTs. Furthermore, we discuss current and future research and deployment challenges of blockchain-supported DTs that require further investigation.

AppsPred: Predicting Context-Aware Smartphone Apps using Random Forest Learning

Iqbal H. Sarker, Khaled Salah

Due to the popularity of context-awareness in the Internet of Things (IoT) and the recent advanced features in the most popular IoT device, i.e., smartphone, modeling and predicting personalized usage behavior based on relevant contexts can be highly useful in assisting them to carry out daily routines and activities. Usage patterns of different categories smartphone apps such as social networking, communication, entertainment, or daily life services related apps usually vary greatly between individuals. People use these apps differently in different contexts, such as temporal context, spatial context, individual mood and preference, work status, Internet connectivity like Wifi? status, or device related status like phone profile, battery level etc. Thus, we consider individuals' apps usage as a multi-class context-aware problem for personalized modeling and prediction. Random Forest learning is one of the most popular machine learning techniques to build a multi-class prediction model. Therefore, in this paper, we present an effective context-aware smartphone apps prediction model, and name it "AppsPred" using random forest machine learning technique that takes into account optimal number of trees based on such multi-dimensional contexts to build the resultant forest. The effectiveness of this model is examined by conducting experiments on smartphone apps usage datasets collected from individual users. The experimental results show that our AppsPred significantly outperforms other popular machine learning classification approaches like ZeroR, Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, Support Vector Machines, Logistic Regression while predicting smartphone apps in various context-aware test cases.

A Review of Performance, Energy and Privacy of Intrusion Detection Systems for IoT

Junaid Arshad, Muhammad Ajmal Azad, Khaled Salah et al.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a disruptive technology with applications across diverse domains such as transportation and logistics systems, smart grids, smart homes, connected vehicles, and smart cities. Alongside the growth of these infrastructures, the volume and variety of attacks on these infrastructures has increased highlighting the significance of distinct protection mechanisms. Intrusion detection is one of the distinguished protection mechanisms with notable recent efforts made to establish effective intrusion detection for IoT and IoV. However, unique characteristics of such infrastructures including battery power, bandwidth and processors overheads, and the network dynamics can influence the operation of an intrusion detection system. This paper presents a comprehensive study of existing intrusion detection systems for IoT systems including emerging systems such as Internet of Vehicles (IoV). The paper analyzes existing systems in three aspects: computational overhead, energy consumption and privacy implications. Based on a rigorous analysis of the existing intrusion detection approaches, the paper also identifies open challenges for an effective and collaborative design of intrusion detection system for resource-constrained IoT system in general and its applications such as IoV. These efforts are envisaged to highlight state of the art with respect to intrusion detection for IoT and open challenges requiring specific efforts to achieve efficient intrusion detection within these systems.
