Joint Token Pruning and Squeezing Towards More Aggressive Compression of Vision TransformersSiyuan Wei, Tianzhu Ye, Shen Zhang et al.
Although vision transformers (ViTs) have shown promising results in various computer vision tasks recently, their high computational cost limits their practical applications. Previous approaches that prune redundant tokens have demonstrated a good trade-off between performance and computation costs. Nevertheless, errors caused by pruning strategies can lead to significant information loss. Our quantitative experiments reveal that the impact of pruned tokens on performance should be noticeable. To address this issue, we propose a novel joint Token Pruning & Squeezing module (TPS) for compressing vision transformers with higher efficiency. Firstly, TPS adopts pruning to get the reserved and pruned subsets. Secondly, TPS squeezes the information of pruned tokens into partial reserved tokens via the unidirectional nearest-neighbor matching and similarity-based fusing steps. Compared to state-of-the-art methods, our approach outperforms them under all token pruning intensities. Especially while shrinking DeiT-tiny&small computational budgets to 35%, it improves the accuracy by 1%-6% compared with baselines on ImageNet classification. The proposed method can accelerate the throughput of DeiT-small beyond DeiT-tiny, while its accuracy surpasses DeiT-tiny by 4.78%. Experiments on various transformers demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, while analysis experiments prove our higher robustness to the errors of the token pruning policy. KD-CVG: A Knowledge-Driven Approach for Creative Video GenerationLinkai Liu, Wei Feng, Xi Zhao et al.
Creative Generation (CG) leverages generative models to automatically produce advertising content that highlights product features, and it has been a significant focus of recent research. However, while CG has advanced considerably, most efforts have concentrated on generating advertising text and images, leaving Creative Video Generation (CVG) relatively underexplored. This gap is largely due to two major challenges faced by Text-to-Video (T2V) models: (a) \textbf{ambiguous semantic alignment}, where models struggle to accurately correlate product selling points with creative video content, and (b) \textbf{inadequate motion adaptability}, resulting in unrealistic movements and distortions. To address these challenges, we develop a comprehensive Advertising Creative Knowledge Base (ACKB) as a foundational resource and propose a knowledge-driven approach (KD-CVG) to overcome the knowledge limitations of existing models. KD-CVG consists of two primary modules: Semantic-Aware Retrieval (SAR) and Multimodal Knowledge Reference (MKR). SAR utilizes the semantic awareness of graph attention networks and reinforcement learning feedback to enhance the model's comprehension of the connections between selling points and creative videos. Building on this, MKR incorporates semantic and motion priors into the T2V model to address existing knowledge gaps. Extensive experiments have demonstrated KD-CVG's superior performance in achieving semantic alignment and motion adaptability, validating its effectiveness over other state-of-the-art methods. One Size, Many Fits: Aligning Diverse Group-Wise Click Preferences in Large-Scale Advertising Image GenerationShuo Lu, Haohan Wang, Wei Feng et al.
Advertising image generation has increasingly focused on online metrics like Click-Through Rate (CTR), yet existing approaches adopt a ``one-size-fits-all" strategy that optimizes for overall CTR while neglecting preference diversity among user groups. This leads to suboptimal performance for specific groups, limiting targeted marketing effectiveness. To bridge this gap, we present \textit{One Size, Many Fits} (OSMF), a unified framework that aligns diverse group-wise click preferences in large-scale advertising image generation. OSMF begins with product-aware adaptive grouping, which dynamically organizes users based on their attributes and product characteristics, representing each group with rich collective preference features. Building on these groups, preference-conditioned image generation employs a Group-aware Multimodal Large Language Model (G-MLLM) to generate tailored images for each group. The G-MLLM is pre-trained to simultaneously comprehend group features and generate advertising images. Subsequently, we fine-tune the G-MLLM using our proposed Group-DPO for group-wise preference alignment, which effectively enhances each group's CTR on the generated images. To further advance this field, we introduce the Grouped Advertising Image Preference Dataset (GAIP), the first large-scale public dataset of group-wise image preferences, including around 600K groups built from 40M users. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework achieves the state-of-the-art performance in both offline and online settings. Design Your Ad: Personalized Advertising Image and Text Generation with Unified Autoregressive ModelsYexing Xu, Wei Feng, Shen Zhang et al.
Generating realistic and user-preferred advertisements is a key challenge in e-commerce. Existing approaches utilize multiple independent models driven by click-through-rate (CTR) to controllably create attractive image or text advertisements. However, their pipelines lack cross-modal perception and rely on CTR that only reflects average preferences. Therefore, we explore jointly generating personalized image-text advertisements from historical click behaviors. We first design a Unified Advertisement Generative model (Uni-AdGen) that employs a single autoregressive framework to produce both advertising images and texts. By incorporating a foreground perception module and instruction tuning, Uni-AdGen enhances the realism of the generated content. To further personalize advertisements, we equip Uni-AdGen with a coarse-to-fine preference understanding module that effectively captures user interests from noisy multimodal historical behaviors to drive personalized generation. Additionally, we construct the first large-scale Personalized Advertising image-text dataset (PAd1M) and introduce a Product Background Similarity (PBS) metric to facilitate training and evaluation. xGR: Efficient Generative Recommendation Serving at ScaleQingxiao Sun, Tongxuan Liu, Shen Zhang et al.
Recommendation system delivers substantial economic benefits by providing personalized predictions. Generative recommendation (GR) integrates LLMs to enhance the understanding of long user-item sequences. Despite employing attention-based architectures, GR's workload differs markedly from that of LLM serving. GR typically processes long prompt while producing short, fixed-length outputs, yet the computational cost of each decode phase is especially high due to the large beam width. In addition, since the beam search involves a vast item space, the sorting overhead becomes particularly time-consuming. We propose xGR, a GR-oriented serving system that meets strict low-latency requirements under highconcurrency scenarios. First, xGR unifies the processing of prefill and decode phases through staged computation and separated KV cache. Second, xGR enables early sorting termination and mask-based item filtering with data structure reuse. Third, xGR reconstructs the overall pipeline to exploit multilevel overlap and multi-stream parallelism. Our experiments with real-world recommendation service datasets demonstrate that xGR achieves at least 3.49x throughput compared to the state-of-the-art baseline under strict latency constraints.

HiDiffusion: Unlocking Higher-Resolution Creativity and Efficiency in Pretrained Diffusion ModelsShen Zhang, Zhaowei Chen, Zhenyu Zhao et al.
Diffusion models have become a mainstream approach for high-resolution image synthesis. However, directly generating higher-resolution images from pretrained diffusion models will encounter unreasonable object duplication and exponentially increase the generation time. In this paper, we discover that object duplication arises from feature duplication in the deep blocks of the U-Net. Concurrently, We pinpoint the extended generation times to self-attention redundancy in U-Net's top blocks. To address these issues, we propose a tuning-free higher-resolution framework named HiDiffusion. Specifically, HiDiffusion contains Resolution-Aware U-Net (RAU-Net) that dynamically adjusts the feature map size to resolve object duplication and engages Modified Shifted Window Multi-head Self-Attention (MSW-MSA) that utilizes optimized window attention to reduce computations. we can integrate HiDiffusion into various pretrained diffusion models to scale image generation resolutions even to 4096x4096 at 1.5-6x the inference speed of previous methods. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach can address object duplication and heavy computation issues, achieving state-of-the-art performance on higher-resolution image synthesis tasks.

Representation Entanglement for Generation: Training Diffusion Transformers Is Much Easier Than You ThinkGe Wu, Shen Zhang, Ruijing Shi et al.
REPA and its variants effectively mitigate training challenges in diffusion models by incorporating external visual representations from pretrained models, through alignment between the noisy hidden projections of denoising networks and foundational clean image representations. We argue that the external alignment, which is absent during the entire denoising inference process, falls short of fully harnessing the potential of discriminative representations. In this work, we propose a straightforward method called Representation Entanglement for Generation (REG), which entangles low-level image latents with a single high-level class token from pretrained foundation models for denoising. REG acquires the capability to produce coherent image-class pairs directly from pure noise, substantially improving both generation quality and training efficiency. This is accomplished with negligible additional inference overhead, requiring only one single additional token for denoising (<0.5\% increase in FLOPs and latency). The inference process concurrently reconstructs both image latents and their corresponding global semantics, where the acquired semantic knowledge actively guides and enhances the image generation process. On ImageNet 256$\times$256, SiT-XL/2 + REG demonstrates remarkable convergence acceleration, achieving $\textbf{63}\times$ and $\textbf{23}\times$ faster training than SiT-XL/2 and SiT-XL/2 + REPA, respectively. More impressively, SiT-L/2 + REG trained for merely 400K iterations outperforms SiT-XL/2 + REPA trained for 4M iterations ($\textbf{10}\times$ longer). The Velocity Deficit: Initial Energy Injection for Flow MatchingLinze Li, Zong-Wei Hong, Shen Zhang et al.
While Flow Matching theoretically guarantees constant-velocity trajectories, we identify a critical breakdown in high-dimensional practice: the Velocity Deficit. We show that the MSE objective systematically underestimates velocity magnitude, causing generated samples to fail to reach the data manifold-a phenomenon we term Integration Lag. To rectify this, we propose Initial Energy Injection, instantiated via two complementary methods: the training-based Magnitude-Aware Flow Matching (MAFM) and the training-free Scale Schedule Corrector (SSC). Both are grounded in our discovery of a crucial asymmetry: velocity contraction causes harmful kinetic stagnation at the trajectory's start, yet acts as a beneficial denoising mechanism at its end. Empirically, SSC yields significant efficiency gains with zero retraining and just one line of code. On ImageNet-1k (256x256), it improves FID by 44.6% (from 13.68 to 7.58) and achieves a 5x speedup, enabling a 50-step generator (FID 7.58) to beat a 250-step baseline (FID 8.65). Furthermore, our methods generalize to Text-to-Image tasks and high-resolution generation, improving FID on MS-COCO by ~22%.

Machine Learning and Deep Learning Algorithms for Bearing Fault Diagnostics -- A Comprehensive ReviewShen Zhang, Shibo Zhang, Bingnan Wang et al.
In this survey paper, we systematically summarize existing literature on bearing fault diagnostics with machine learning (ML) and data mining techniques. While conventional ML methods, including artificial neural network (ANN), principal component analysis (PCA), support vector machines (SVM), etc., have been successfully applied to the detection and categorization of bearing faults for decades, recent developments in deep learning (DL) algorithms in the last five years have sparked renewed interest in both industry and academia for intelligent machine health monitoring. In this paper, we first provide a brief review of conventional ML methods, before taking a deep dive into the state-of-the-art DL algorithms for bearing fault applications. Specifically, the superiority of DL based methods over conventional ML methods are analyzed in terms of fault feature extraction and classification performances; many new functionalities enabled by DL techniques are also summarized. In addition, to obtain a more intuitive insight, a comparative study is conducted on the classification accuracy of different algorithms utilizing the open-source Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) bearing dataset. Finally, to facilitate the transition on applying various DL algorithms to bearing fault diagnostics, detailed recommendations and suggestions are provided for specific application conditions such as the setup environment, the data size, and the number of sensors and sensor types. Future research directions to further enhance the performance of DL algorithms on health monitoring are also discussed.

Samsung Research China-Beijing at SemEval-2024 Task 3: A multi-stage framework for Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction in ConversationsShen Zhang, Haojie Zhang, Jing Zhang et al.
In human-computer interaction, it is crucial for agents to respond to human by understanding their emotions. Unraveling the causes of emotions is more challenging. A new task named Multimodal Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction in Conversations is responsible for recognizing emotion and identifying causal expressions. In this study, we propose a multi-stage framework to generate emotion and extract the emotion causal pairs given the target emotion. In the first stage, Llama-2-based InstructERC is utilized to extract the emotion category of each utterance in a conversation. After emotion recognition, a two-stream attention model is employed to extract the emotion causal pairs given the target emotion for subtask 2 while MuTEC is employed to extract causal span for subtask 1. Our approach achieved first place for both of the two subtasks in the competition.

LEDiT: Your Length-Extrapolatable Diffusion Transformer without Positional EncodingShen Zhang, Siyuan Liang, Yaning Tan et al.
Diffusion transformers (DiTs) struggle to generate images at resolutions higher than their training resolutions. The primary obstacle is that the explicit positional encodings(PE), such as RoPE, need extrapolating to unseen positions which degrades performance when the inference resolution differs from training. In this paper, We propose a Length-Extrapolatable Diffusion Transformer~(LEDiT) to overcome this limitation. LEDiT needs no explicit PEs, thereby avoiding PE extrapolation. The key innovation of LEDiT lies in the use of causal attention. We demonstrate that causal attention can implicitly encode global positional information and show that such information facilitates extrapolation. We further introduce a locality enhancement module, which captures fine-grained local information to complement the global coarse-grained position information encoded by causal attention. Experimental results on both conditional and text-to-image generation tasks demonstrate that LEDiT supports up to 4x resolution scaling (e.g., from 256x256 to 512x512), achieving better image quality compared to the state-of-the-art length extrapolation methods. VeCoR -- Velocity Contrastive Regularization for Flow MatchingZong-Wei Hong, Jing-lun Li, Lin-Ze Li et al.
Flow Matching (FM) has recently emerged as a principled and efficient alternative to diffusion models. Standard FM encourages the learned velocity field to follow a target direction; however, it may accumulate errors along the trajectory and drive samples off the data manifold, leading to perceptual degradation, especially in lightweight or low-step configurations. To enhance stability and generalization, we extend FM into a balanced attract-repel scheme that provides explicit guidance on both "where to go" and "where not to go." To be formal, we propose \textbf{Velocity Contrastive Regularization (VeCoR)}, a complementary training scheme for flow-based generative modeling that augments the standard FM objective with contrastive, two-sided supervision. VeCoR not only aligns the predicted velocity with a stable reference direction (positive supervision) but also pushes it away from inconsistent, off-manifold directions (negative supervision). This contrastive formulation transforms FM from a purely attractive, one-sided objective into a two-sided training signal, regularizing trajectory evolution and improving perceptual fidelity across datasets and backbones. On ImageNet-1K 256$\times$256, VeCoR yields 22\% and 35\% relative FID reductions on SiT-XL/2 and REPA-SiT-XL/2 backbones, respectively, and achieves further FID gains (32\% relative) on MS-COCO text-to-image generation, demonstrating consistent improvements in stability, convergence, and image quality, particularly in low-step and lightweight settings. Towards a 3D Transfer-based Black-box Attack via Critical Feature GuidanceShuchao Pang, Zhenghan Chen, Shen Zhang et al.
Deep neural networks for 3D point clouds have been demonstrated to be vulnerable to adversarial examples. Previous 3D adversarial attack methods often exploit certain information about the target models, such as model parameters or outputs, to generate adversarial point clouds. However, in realistic scenarios, it is challenging to obtain any information about the target models under conditions of absolute security. Therefore, we focus on transfer-based attacks, where generating adversarial point clouds does not require any information about the target models. Based on our observation that the critical features used for point cloud classification are consistent across different DNN architectures, we propose CFG, a novel transfer-based black-box attack method that improves the transferability of adversarial point clouds via the proposed Critical Feature Guidance. Specifically, our method regularizes the search of adversarial point clouds by computing the importance of the extracted features, prioritizing the corruption of critical features that are likely to be adopted by diverse architectures. Further, we explicitly constrain the maximum deviation extent of the generated adversarial point clouds in the loss function to ensure their imperceptibility. Extensive experiments conducted on the ModelNet40 and ScanObjectNN benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed CFG outperforms the state-of-the-art attack methods by a large margin.

A comparative study on machine learning models combining with outlier detection and balanced sampling methods for credit scoringHongyi Qian, Shen Zhang, Baohui Wang et al.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms have grown rapidly over the past decade as the network infrastructure has improved and the demand for personal lending has grown. Such platforms allow users to create peer-to-peer lending relationships without the help of traditional financial institutions. Assessing the borrowers' credit is crucial to reduce the default rate and benign development of P2P platforms. Building a personal credit scoring machine learning model can effectively predict whether users will repay loans on the P2P platform. And the handling of data outliers and sample imbalance problems can affect the final effect of machine learning models. There have been some studies on balanced sampling methods, but the effect of outlier detection methods and their combination with balanced sampling methods on the effectiveness of machine learning models has not been fully studied. In this paper, the influence of using different outlier detection methods and balanced sampling methods on commonly used machine learning models is investigated. Experiments on 44,487 Lending Club samples show that proper outlier detection can improve the effectiveness of the machine learning model, and the balanced sampling method only has a good effect on a few machine learning models, such as MLP.

Deep Learning in Human Activity Recognition with Wearable Sensors: A Review on AdvancesShibo Zhang, Yaxuan Li, Shen Zhang et al.
Mobile and wearable devices have enabled numerous applications, including activity tracking, wellness monitoring, and human--computer interaction, that measure and improve our daily lives. Many of these applications are made possible by leveraging the rich collection of low-power sensors found in many mobile and wearable devices to perform human activity recognition (HAR). Recently, deep learning has greatly pushed the boundaries of HAR on mobile and wearable devices. This paper systematically categorizes and summarizes existing work that introduces deep learning methods for wearables-based HAR and provides a comprehensive analysis of the current advancements, developing trends, and major challenges. We also present cutting-edge frontiers and future directions for deep learning-based HAR.

This review paper systematically summarizes the existing literature on utilizing machine learning (ML) techniques for the control and monitoring of electric machine drives. It is anticipated that with the rapid progress in learning algorithms and specialized embedded hardware platforms, machine learning-based data-driven approaches will become standard tools for the automated high-performance control and monitoring of electric drives. Additionally, this paper also provides some outlook toward promoting its widespread application in the industry with a focus on deploying ML algorithms onto embedded system-on-chip (SoC) field-programmable gate array (FPGA) devices.

A Survey of Deep Reinforcement Learning Algorithms for Motion Planning and Control of Autonomous VehiclesFei Ye, Shen Zhang, Pin Wang et al.
In this survey, we systematically summarize the current literature on studies that apply reinforcement learning (RL) to the motion planning and control of autonomous vehicles. Many existing contributions can be attributed to the pipeline approach, which consists of many hand-crafted modules, each with a functionality selected for the ease of human interpretation. However, this approach does not automatically guarantee maximal performance due to the lack of a system-level optimization. Therefore, this paper also presents a growing trend of work that falls into the end-to-end approach, which typically offers better performance and smaller system scales. However, their performance also suffers from the lack of expert data and generalization issues. Finally, the remaining challenges applying deep RL algorithms on autonomous driving are summarized, and future research directions are also presented to tackle these challenges.

Continuous-time Gaussian Process Trajectory Generation for Multi-robot Formation via Probabilistic InferenceShuang Guo, Bo Liu, Shen Zhang et al.
In this paper, we extend a famous motion planning approach GPMP2 to multi-robot cases, yielding a novel centralized trajectory generation method for the multi-robot formation. A sparse Gaussian Process model is employed to represent the continuous-time trajectories of all robots as a limited number of states, which improves computational efficiency due to the sparsity. We add constraints to guarantee collision avoidance between individuals as well as formation maintenance, then all constraints and kinematics are formulated on a factor graph. By introducing a global planner, our proposed method can generate trajectories efficiently for a team of robots which have to get through a width-varying area by adaptive formation change. Finally, we provide the implementation of an incremental replanning algorithm to demonstrate the online operation potential of our proposed framework. The experiments in simulation and real world illustrate the feasibility, efficiency and scalability of our approach.

Few-Shot Bearing Fault Diagnosis Based on Model-Agnostic Meta-LearningShen Zhang, Fei Ye, Bingnan Wang et al.
The rapid development of artificial intelligence and deep learning has provided many opportunities to further enhance the safety, stability, and accuracy of industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). As indispensable components to many mission-critical CPS assets and equipment, mechanical bearings need to be monitored to identify any trace of abnormal conditions. Most of the data-driven approaches applied to bearing fault diagnosis up-to-date are trained using a large amount of fault data collected a priori. In many practical applications, however, it can be unsafe and time-consuming to collect sufficient data samples for each fault category, making it challenging to train a robust classifier. In this paper, we propose a few-shot learning framework for bearing fault diagnosis based on model-agnostic meta-learning (MAML), which targets for training an effective fault classifier using limited data. In addition, it can leverage the training data and learn to identify new fault scenarios more efficiently. Case studies on the generalization to new artificial faults show that the proposed framework achieves an overall accuracy up to 25% higher than a Siamese network-based benchmark study. Finally, the robustness and the generalization capability of the proposed framework are further validated by applying it to identify real bearing damages using data from artificial damages, which compares favorably against 6 state-of-the-art few-shot learning algorithms using consistent test environments.

Semi-Supervised Learning of Bearing Anomaly Detection via Deep Variational AutoencodersShen Zhang, Fei Ye, Bingnan Wang et al.
Most of the data-driven approaches applied to bearing fault diagnosis up to date are established in the supervised learning paradigm, which usually requires a large set of labeled data collected a priori. In practical applications, however, obtaining accurate labels based on real-time bearing conditions can be far more challenging than simply collecting a huge amount of unlabeled data using various sensors. In this paper, we thus propose a semi-supervised learning approach for bearing anomaly detection using variational autoencoder (VAE) based deep generative models, which allows for effective utilization of dataset when only a small subset of data have labels. Finally, a series of experiments is performed using both the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) bearing dataset and the University of Cincinnati's Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems (IMS) dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed semi-supervised learning scheme greatly outperforms two mainstream semi-supervised learning approaches and a baseline supervised convolutional neural network approach, with the overall accuracy improvement ranging between 3% to 30% using different proportions of labeled samples.

Visualization of Multi-Objective Switched Reluctance Machine Optimization at Multiple Operating Conditions with t-SNEShen Zhang, Shibo Zhang, Sufei Li et al.
The optimization of electric machines at multiple operating points is crucial for applications that require frequent changes on speeds and loads, such as the electric vehicles, to strive for the machine optimal performance across the entire driving cycle. However, the number of objectives that would need to be optimized would significantly increase with the number of operating points considered in the optimization, thus posting a potential problem in regards to the visualization techniques currently in use, such as in the scatter plots of Pareto fronts, the parallel coordinates, and in the principal component analysis (PCA), inhibiting their ability to provide machine designers with intuitive and informative visualizations of all of the design candidates and their ability to pick a few for further fine-tuning with performance verification. Therefore, this paper proposes the utilization of t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) to visualize all of the optimization objectives of various electric machines design candidates with various operating conditions, which constitute a high-dimensional set of data that would lie on several different, but related, low-dimensional manifolds. Finally, two case studies of switched reluctance machines (SRM) are presented to illustrate the superiority of then t-SNE when compared to traditional visualization techniques used in electric machine optimizations.
