A Virtual Reality Training System for Automotive Engines Assembly and Disassembly

Automotive engine assembly and disassembly are common and crucial programs in the automotive industry. Traditional education trains students to learn automotive engine assembly and disassembly in lecture courses and then to operate with physical engines, which are generally low effectiveness and high cost. In this work, we developed a multi-layer structured Virtual Reality (VR) system to provide students with training in automotive engine (Buick Verano) assembly and disassembly. We designed the VR training system with The VR training system is designed to have several major features, including replaceable engine parts and reusable tools, friendly user interfaces and guidance, and bottom-up designed multi-layer architecture, which can be extended to various engine models. The VR system is evaluated with controlled experiments of two groups of students. The results demonstrate that our VR training system provides remarkable usability in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. Currently, our VR system has been demonstrated and employed in the courses of Chinese colleges to train students in automotive engine assembly and disassembly. Differentiable Parsing and Visual Grounding of Natural Language Instructions for Object Placement

We present a new method, PARsing And visual GrOuNding (ParaGon), for grounding natural language in object placement tasks. Natural language generally describes objects and spatial relations with compositionality and ambiguity, two major obstacles to effective language grounding. For compositionality, ParaGon parses a language instruction into an object-centric graph representation to ground objects individually. For ambiguity, ParaGon uses a novel particle-based graph neural network to reason about object placements with uncertainty. Essentially, ParaGon integrates a parsing algorithm into a probabilistic, data-driven learning framework. It is fully differentiable and trained end-to-end from data for robustness against complex, ambiguous language input.

GPA: Learning GUI Process Automation from Demonstrations

GUI Process Automation (GPA) is a lightweight but general vision-based Robotic Process Automation (RPA), which enables fast and stable process replay with only a single demo. Addressing the fragility of traditional RPA and the non-deterministic risks of current vision language model-based GUI agents, GPA introduces three core benefits: (1) Robustness via Sequential Monte Carlo-based localization to handle rescaling and detection uncertainty; (2) Deterministic and Reliability safeguarded by readiness calibration; and (3) Privacy through fast, fully local execution. This approach delivers the adaptability, robustness, and security required for enterprise workflows. It can also be used as an MCP/CLI tool by other agents with coding capabilities so that the agent only reasons and orchestrates while GPA handles the GUI execution. We conducted a pilot experiment to compare GPA with Gemini 3 Pro (with CUA tools) and found that GPA achieves higher success rate with 10 times faster execution speed in finishing long-horizon GUI tasks.

MCP-Universe: Benchmarking Large Language Models with Real-World Model Context Protocol Servers

The Model Context Protocol has emerged as a transformative standard for connecting large language models to external data sources and tools, rapidly gaining adoption across major AI providers and development platforms. However, existing benchmarks are overly simplistic and fail to capture real application challenges such as long-horizon reasoning and large, unfamiliar tool spaces. To address this critical gap, we introduce MCP-Universe, the first comprehensive benchmark specifically designed to evaluate LLMs in realistic and hard tasks through interaction with real-world MCP servers. Our benchmark encompasses 6 core domains spanning 11 different MCP servers: Location Navigation, Repository Management, Financial Analysis, 3D Design, Browser Automation, and Web Searching. To ensure rigorous evaluation, we implement execution-based evaluators, including format evaluators for agent format compliance, static evaluators for time-invariant content matching, and dynamic evaluators that automatically retrieve real-time ground truth for temporally sensitive tasks. Through extensive evaluation of leading LLMs, we find that even SOTA models such as GPT-5 (43.72%), Grok-4 (33.33%) and Claude-4.0-Sonnet (29.44%) exhibit significant performance limitations. In addition, our benchmark poses a significant long-context challenge for LLM agents, as the number of input tokens increases rapidly with the number of interaction steps. Moreover, it introduces an unknown-tools challenge, as LLM agents often lack familiarity with the precise usage of the MCP servers. Notably, enterprise-level agents like Cursor cannot achieve better performance than standard ReAct frameworks. Beyond evaluation, we open-source our extensible evaluation framework with UI support, enabling researchers and practitioners to seamlessly integrate new agents and MCP servers while fostering innovation in the rapidly evolving MCP ecosystem.

Generative Adversarial Gumbel MCTS for Abstract Visual Composition Generation

We study abstract visual composition, in which identity is primarily determined by the spatial configuration and relations among a small set of geometric primitives (e.g., parts, symmetry, topology). They are invariant primarily to texture and photorealistic detail. Composing such structures from fixed components under geometric constraints and vague goal specification (such as text) is non-trivial due to combinatorial placement choices, limited data, and discrete feasibility (overlap-free, allowable orientations), which create a sparse solution manifold ill-suited to purely statistical pixel-space generators. We propose a constraint-guided framework that combines explicit geometric reasoning with neural semantics. An AlphaGo-style search enforces feasibility, while a fine-tuned vision-language model scores semantic alignment as reward signals. Our algorithm uses a policy network as a heuristic in Monte-Carlo Tree Search and fine-tunes the network via search-generated plans. Inspired by the Generative Adversarial Network, we use the generated instances for adversarial reward refinement. Over time, the generation should approach the actual data more closely when the reward model cannot distinguish between generated instances and ground-truth. In the Tangram Assembly task, our approach yields higher validity and semantic fidelity than diffusion and auto-regressive baselines, especially as constraints tighten.

On Benchmarking the Capability of Symbolic Execution Tools with Logic Bombs

Symbolic execution now becomes an indispensable technique for software testing and program analysis. There are several symbolic execution tools available off-the-shelf, and we need a practical benchmark approach to learn their capabilities. Therefore, this paper introduces a novel approach to benchmark symbolic execution tools in a fine-grained and efficient manner. In particular, our approach evaluates the performance of such tools against the known challenges faced by general symbolic execution techniques, such as floating-point numbers and symbolic memories. To this end, we first survey related papers and systematize the challenges of symbolic execution. We extract 12 distinct challenges from the literature and categorize them into two categories: symbolic-reasoning challenges and path-explosion challenges. Then, we develop a dataset of logic bombs and a framework to benchmark symbolic execution tools automatically. For each challenge, our dataset contains several logic bombs, each of which is guarded by a specific challenging problem. If a symbolic execution tool can find test cases to trigger logic bombs, it indicates that the tool can handle the corresponding problems. We have conducted real-world experiments with three popular symbolic execution tools: KLEE, Angr, and Triton. Experimental results show that our approach can reveal their capabilities and limitations in handling particular issues accurately and efficiently. The benchmark process generally takes only dozens of minutes to evaluate a tool. We release our dataset on GitHub as open source, with an aim to better facilitate the community to conduct future work on benchmarking symbolic execution tools.

GTA1: GUI Test-time Scaling Agent

Graphical user interface (GUI) agents autonomously complete tasks across platforms (\eg, Linux) by sequentially decomposing user instructions into action proposals that iteratively interact with visual elements in the evolving environment. However, two main challenges arise: i) planning (\ie, the action proposal sequence) under expansive action space, where selecting an appropriate plan is non-trivial, as many valid ones may exist; ii) accurately grounding actions in complex and high-resolution interfaces, \ie, precisely interacting with visual targets. This paper investigates the aforementioned challenges with our \textbf{G}UI \textbf{T}est-time Scaling \textbf{A}gent, namely GTA1. First, we conduct test-time scaling to select the most appropriate action proposal: at each step, multiple candidate proposals are sampled and evaluated and selected by a judge model. It trades off computation for better decision quality by concurrent sampling. Second, we propose a model that improves grounding of the selected action proposals to its corresponding visual elements. Our key insight is that reinforcement learning (RL) facilitates grounding through inherent objective alignments, rewarding successful clicks on interface elements. Experimentally, GTA1 achieves state-of-the-art performance on both grounding and agent task execution benchmarks. The code and models are released here.

On the Empirical Complexity of Reasoning and Planning in LLMs

Chain-of-thought (CoT), tree-of-thought (ToT), and related techniques work surprisingly well in practice for some complex reasoning tasks with Large Language Models (LLMs), but why? This work seeks the underlying reasons by conducting experimental case studies and linking the performance benefits to well-established sample and computational complexity principles in machine learning. We experimented with 6 reasoning tasks, ranging from grade school math, air travel planning, ..., to Blocksworld. The results suggest that (i) both CoT and ToT benefit significantly from task decomposition, which breaks a complex reasoning task into a sequence of steps with low sample complexity and explicitly outlines the reasoning structure, and (ii) for computationally hard reasoning tasks, the more sophisticated tree structure of ToT outperforms the linear structure of CoT. These findings provide useful guidelines for the use of LLM in solving reasoning tasks in practice.

Insights into dendritic growth mechanisms in batteries: A combined machine learning and computational study

In recent years, researchers have increasingly sought batteries as an efficient and cost-effective solution for energy storage and supply, owing to their high energy density, low cost, and environmental resilience. However, the issue of dendrite growth has emerged as a significant obstacle in battery development. Excessive dendrite growth during charging and discharging processes can lead to battery short-circuiting, degradation of electrochemical performance, reduced cycle life, and abnormal exothermic events. Consequently, understanding the dendrite growth process has become a key challenge for researchers. In this study, we investigated dendrite growth mechanisms in batteries using a combined machine learning approach, specifically a two-dimensional artificial convolutional neural network (CNN) model, along with computational methods. We developed two distinct computer models to predict dendrite growth in batteries. The CNN-1 model employs standard convolutional neural network techniques for dendritic growth prediction, while CNN-2 integrates additional physical parameters to enhance model robustness. Our results demonstrate that CNN-2 significantly enhances prediction accuracy, offering deeper insights into the impact of physical factors on dendritic growth. This improved model effectively captures the dynamic nature of dendrite formation, exhibiting high accuracy and sensitivity. These findings contribute to the advancement of safer and more reliable energy storage systems.

Grounding Emotional Descriptions to Electrovibration Haptic Signals

Designing and displaying haptic signals with sensory and emotional attributes can improve the user experience in various applications. Free-form user language provides rich sensory and emotional information for haptic design (e.g., ``This signal feels smooth and exciting''), but little work exists on linking user descriptions to haptic signals (i.e., language grounding). To address this gap, we conducted a study where 12 users described the feel of 32 signals perceived on a surface haptics (i.e., electrovibration) display. We developed a computational pipeline using natural language processing (NLP) techniques, such as GPT-3.5 Turbo and word embedding methods, to extract sensory and emotional keywords and group them into semantic clusters (i.e., concepts). We linked the keyword clusters to haptic signal features (e.g., pulse count) using correlation analysis. The proposed pipeline demonstrates the viability of a computational approach to analyzing haptic experiences. We discuss our future plans for creating a predictive model of haptic experience.

Speculative Interference Attacks: Breaking Invisible Speculation Schemes

Recent security vulnerabilities that target speculative execution (e.g., Spectre) present a significant challenge for processor design. The highly publicized vulnerability uses speculative execution to learn victim secrets by changing cache state. As a result, recent computer architecture research has focused on invisible speculation mechanisms that attempt to block changes in cache state due to speculative execution. Prior work has shown significant success in preventing Spectre and other vulnerabilities at modest performance costs. In this paper, we introduce speculative interference attacks, which show that prior invisible speculation mechanisms do not fully block these speculation-based attacks. We make two key observations. First, misspeculated younger instructions can change the timing of older, bound-to-retire instructions, including memory operations. Second, changing the timing of a memory operation can change the order of that memory operation relative to other memory operations, resulting in persistent changes to the cache state. Using these observations, we demonstrate (among other attack variants) that secret information accessed by mis-speculated instructions can change the order of bound-to-retire loads. Load timing changes can therefore leave secret-dependent changes in the cache, even in the presence of invisible speculation mechanisms. We show that this problem is not easy to fix: Speculative interference converts timing changes to persistent cache-state changes, and timing is typically ignored by many cache-based defenses. We develop a framework to understand the attack and demonstrate concrete proof-of-concept attacks against invisible speculation mechanisms. We provide security definitions sufficient to block speculative interference attacks; describe a simple defense mechanism with a high performance cost; and discuss how future research can improve its performance.

Visual Semantic SLAM with Landmarks for Large-Scale Outdoor Environment

Semantic SLAM is an important field in autonomous driving and intelligent agents, which can enable robots to achieve high-level navigation tasks, obtain simple cognition or reasoning ability and achieve language-based human-robot-interaction. In this paper, we built a system to creat a semantic 3D map by combining 3D point cloud from ORB SLAM with semantic segmentation information from Convolutional Neural Network model PSPNet-101 for large-scale environments. Besides, a new dataset for KITTI sequences has been built, which contains the GPS information and labels of landmarks from Google Map in related streets of the sequences. Moreover, we find a way to associate the real-world landmark with point cloud map and built a topological map based on semantic map.

Active Learning for Risk-Sensitive Inverse Reinforcement Learning

One typical assumption in inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) is that human experts act to optimize the expected utility of a stochastic cost with a fixed distribution. This assumption deviates from actual human behaviors under ambiguity. Risk-sensitive inverse reinforcement learning (RS-IRL) bridges such gap by assuming that humans act according to a random cost with respect to a set of subjectively distorted distributions instead of a fixed one. Such assumption provides the additional flexibility to model human's risk preferences, represented by a risk envelope, in safe-critical tasks. However, like other learning from demonstration techniques, RS-IRL could also suffer inefficient learning due to redundant demonstrations. Inspired by the concept of active learning, this research derives a probabilistic disturbance sampling scheme to enable an RS-IRL agent to query expert support that is likely to expose unrevealed boundaries of the expert's risk envelope. Experimental results confirm that our approach accelerates the convergence of RS-IRL algorithms with lower variance while still guaranteeing unbiased convergence.

DeepObfuscation: Securing the Structure of Convolutional Neural Networks via Knowledge Distillation

This paper investigates the piracy problem of deep learning models. Designing and training a well-performing model is generally expensive. However, when releasing them, attackers may reverse engineer the models and pirate their design. This paper, therefore, proposes deep learning obfuscation, aiming at obstructing attackers from pirating a deep learning model. In particular, we focus on obfuscating convolutional neural networks (CNN), a widely employed type of deep learning architectures for image recognition. Our approach obfuscates a CNN model eventually by simulating its feature extractor with a shallow and sequential convolutional block. To this end, we employ a recursive simulation method and a joint training method to train the simulation network. The joint training method leverages both the intermediate knowledge generated by a feature extractor and data labels to train a simulation network. In this way, we can obtain an obfuscated model without accuracy loss. We have verified the feasibility of our approach with three prevalent CNNs, i.e., GoogLeNet, ResNet, and DenseNet. Although these networks are very deep with tens or hundreds of layers, we can simulate them in a shallow network including only five or seven convolutional layers. The obfuscated models are even more efficient than the original models. Our obfuscation approach is very effective to protect the critical structure of a deep learning model from being exposed to attackers. Moreover, it can also thwart attackers from pirating the model with transfer learning or incremental learning techniques because the shallow simulation network bears poor learning ability. To our best knowledge, this paper serves as a first attempt to obfuscate deep learning models, which may shed light on more future studies.
