Taxi Dispatch with Real-Time Sensing Data in Metropolitan Areas: A Receding Horizon Control ApproachFei Miao, Shuo Han, Shan Lin et al.
Traditional taxi systems in metropolitan areas often suffer from inefficiencies due to uncoordinated actions as system capacity and customer demand change. With the pervasive deployment of networked sensors in modern vehicles, large amounts of information regarding customer demand and system status can be collected in real time. This information provides opportunities to perform various types of control and coordination for large-scale intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, we present a receding horizon control (RHC) framework to dispatch taxis, which incorporates highly spatiotemporally correlated demand/supply models and real-time GPS location and occupancy information. The objectives include matching spatiotemporal ratio between demand and supply for service quality with minimum current and anticipated future taxi idle driving distance. Extensive trace-driven analysis with a data set containing taxi operational records in San Francisco shows that our solution reduces the average total idle distance by 52%, and reduces the supply demand ratio error across the city during one experimental time slot by 45%. Moreover, our RHC framework is compatible with a wide variety of predictive models and optimization problem formulations. This compatibility property allows us to solve robust optimization problems with corresponding demand uncertainty models that provide disruptive event information.
ChatSearch: a Dataset and a Generative Retrieval Model for General Conversational Image RetrievalZijia Zhao, Longteng Guo, Tongtian Yue et al.
In this paper, we investigate the task of general conversational image retrieval on open-domain images. The objective is to search for images based on interactive conversations between humans and computers. To advance this task, we curate a dataset called ChatSearch. This dataset includes a multi-round multimodal conversational context query for each target image, thereby requiring the retrieval system to find the accurate image from database. Simultaneously, we propose a generative retrieval model named ChatSearcher, which is trained end-to-end to accept/produce interleaved image-text inputs/outputs. ChatSearcher exhibits strong capability in reasoning with multimodal context and can leverage world knowledge to yield visual retrieval results. It demonstrates superior performance on the ChatSearch dataset and also achieves competitive results on other image retrieval tasks and visual conversation tasks. We anticipate that this work will inspire further research on interactive multimodal retrieval systems. Our dataset will be available at https://github.com/joez17/ChatSearch.

Acoustic Echo Cancellation by Combining Adaptive Digital Filter and Recurrent Neural NetworkLu Ma, Hua Huang, Pei Zhao et al.
Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) plays a key role in voice interaction. Due to the explicit mathematical principle and intelligent nature to accommodate conditions, adaptive filters with different types of implementations are always used for AEC, giving considerable performance. However, there would be some kinds of residual echo in the results, including linear residue introduced by mismatching between estimation and the reality and non-linear residue mostly caused by non-linear components on the audio devices. The linear residue can be reduced with elaborate structure and methods, leaving the non-linear residue intractable for suppression. Though, some non-linear processing methods have already be raised, they are complicated and inefficient for suppression, and would bring damage to the speech audio. In this paper, a fusion scheme by combining adaptive filter and neural network is proposed for AEC. The echo could be reduced in a large scale by adaptive filtering, resulting in little residual echo. Though it is much smaller than speech audio, it could also be perceived by human ear and would make communication annoy. The neural network is elaborately designed and trained for suppressing such residual echo. Experiments compared with prevailing methods are conducted, validating the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed combination scheme.

Playing Atari Ball Games with Hierarchical Reinforcement LearningHua Huang, Adrian Barbu
Human beings are particularly good at reasoning and inference from just a few examples. When facing new tasks, humans will leverage knowledge and skills learned before, and quickly integrate them with the new task. In addition to learning by experimentation, human also learn socio-culturally through instructions and learning by example. In this way humans can learn much faster compared with most current artificial intelligence algorithms in many tasks. In this paper, we test the idea of speeding up machine learning through social learning. We argue that in solving real-world problems, especially when the task is designed by humans, and/or for humans, there are typically instructions from user manuals and/or human experts which give guidelines on how to better accomplish the tasks. We argue that these instructions have tremendous value in designing a reinforcement learning system which can learn in human fashion, and we test the idea by playing the Atari games Tennis and Pong. We experimentally demonstrate that the instructions provide key information about the task, which can be used to decompose the learning task into sub-systems and construct options for the temporally extended planning, and dramatically accelerate the learning process.
