From Pixels to Words -- Towards Native One-Vision Models at Scale

Current vision-language models (VLMs) typically stitch together separate image encoders and language decoders via multi-stage alignment, a modular framework that inevitably fragments pixel-level signals across frames and scatters early pixel-word interactions. In parallel, native VLMs, despite impressive performance on single images, remain largely unexplored in multi-image, video understanding, and spatial intelligence. Hence, we introduce NEO-ov, a native foundation model that learns cross-frame and pixel-word correspondence end-to-end, without any external encoders, auxiliary adapters, or post-hoc fusion. By eliminating module boundaries entirely, NEO-ov enables fine-grained and unified spatiotemporal modeling to emerge natively inside the model. Notably, NEO-ov largely narrows the gap to modular counterparts while excelling at fine-grained visual perception, validating that native "one-vision" architectures are not only feasible but competitive at scale. Beyond empirical performance, we unveil systematic architectural analyses and detailed training recipes to facilitate subsequent native multimodal modeling. Power-LLaVA: Large Language and Vision Assistant for Power Transmission Line Inspection

The inspection of power transmission line has achieved notable achievements in the past few years, primarily due to the integration of deep learning technology. However, current inspection approaches continue to encounter difficulties in generalization and intelligence, which restricts their further applicability. In this paper, we introduce Power-LLaVA, the first large language and vision assistant designed to offer professional and reliable inspection services for power transmission line by engaging in dialogues with humans. Moreover, we also construct a large-scale and high-quality dataset specialized for the inspection task. By employing a two-stage training strategy on the constructed dataset, Power-LLaVA demonstrates exceptional performance at a comparatively low training cost. Extensive experiments further prove the great capabilities of Power-LLaVA within the realm of power transmission line inspection. Code shall be released.

Interpretability is a Kind of Safety: An Interpreter-based Ensemble for Adversary Defense

While having achieved great success in rich real-life applications, deep neural network (DNN) models have long been criticized for their vulnerability to adversarial attacks. Tremendous research efforts have been dedicated to mitigating the threats of adversarial attacks, but the essential trait of adversarial examples is not yet clear, and most existing methods are yet vulnerable to hybrid attacks and suffer from counterattacks. In light of this, in this paper, we first reveal a gradient-based correlation between sensitivity analysis-based DNN interpreters and the generation process of adversarial examples, which indicates the Achilles's heel of adversarial attacks and sheds light on linking together the two long-standing challenges of DNN: fragility and unexplainability. We then propose an interpreter-based ensemble framework called X-Ensemble for robust adversary defense. X-Ensemble adopts a novel detection-rectification process and features in building multiple sub-detectors and a rectifier upon various types of interpretation information toward target classifiers. Moreover, X-Ensemble employs the Random Forests (RF) model to combine sub-detectors into an ensemble detector for adversarial hybrid attacks defense. The non-differentiable property of RF further makes it a precious choice against the counterattack of adversaries. Extensive experiments under various types of state-of-the-art attacks and diverse attack scenarios demonstrate the advantages of X-Ensemble to competitive baseline methods.

AnchorSeg: Language Grounded Query Banks for Reasoning Segmentation

Reasoning segmentation requires models to ground complex, implicit textual queries into precise pixel-level masks. Existing approaches rely on a single segmentation token $\texttt{<SEG>}$, whose hidden state implicitly encodes both semantic reasoning and spatial localization, limiting the model's ability to explicitly disentangle what to segment from where to segment. We introduce AnchorSeg, which reformulates reasoning segmentation as a structured conditional generation process over image tokens, conditioned on language grounded query banks. Instead of compressing all semantic reasoning and spatial localization into a single embedding, AnchorSeg constructs an ordered sequence of query banks: latent reasoning tokens that capture intermediate semantic states, and a segmentation anchor token that provides explicit spatial grounding. We model spatial conditioning as a factorized distribution over image tokens, where the anchor query determines localization signals while contextual queries provide semantic modulation. To bridge token-level predictions and pixel-level supervision, we propose Token--Mask Cycle Consistency (TMCC), a bidirectional training objective that enforces alignment across resolutions. By explicitly decoupling spatial grounding from semantic reasoning through structured language grounded query banks, AnchorSeg achieves state-of-the-art results on ReasonSeg test set (67.7\% gIoU and 68.1\% cIoU). BCTuner: LLM-Guided Monte Carlo Tree Search for Efficient Blockchain Knob Tuning

Knob tuning plays a critical role in improving the performance of permissioned blockchains. However, efficient tuning remains challenging due to the architectural complexity of blockchains and the semantic gap between knob-specific logic and the numerical optimization requirements of tuning tools. In addition, configuration changes are often coupled across different stages of the transaction pipeline, making their performance impact difficult to isolate and predict. Since each trial requires deployment and distributed benchmarking, ineffective exploration incurs substantial cost. These challenges motivate BCTuner, a Large Language Model (LLM)-guided framework that combines knowledge-guided reasoning with structured search. BCTuner organizes multi-source tuning knowledge to support LLM-based reasoning over knob semantics, constraints, and deployment context. It formulates tuning as a Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) process over structured action trajectories, where configurations are incrementally constructed, validated, evaluated, and refined rather than generated in one step. BCTuner further applies adaptive pruning to discard infeasible or low-potential branches before system evaluation. We evaluate BCTuner on Hyperledger Fabric and ChainMaker under diverse workloads and network settings. Experimental results show that BCTuner achieves up to 211.38% throughput improvement over default configurations and outperforms the state-of-the-art blockchain tuning method by up to 20% in performance, while requiring up to 8x fewer interactions with the blockchain system.

Datasets and Benchmarks for Nanophotonic Structure and Parametric Design Simulations

Nanophotonic structures have versatile applications including solar cells, anti-reflective coatings, electromagnetic interference shielding, optical filters, and light emitting diodes. To design and understand these nanophotonic structures, electrodynamic simulations are essential. These simulations enable us to model electromagnetic fields over time and calculate optical properties. In this work, we introduce frameworks and benchmarks to evaluate nanophotonic structures in the context of parametric structure design problems. The benchmarks are instrumental in assessing the performance of optimization algorithms and identifying an optimal structure based on target optical properties. Moreover, we explore the impact of varying grid sizes in electrodynamic simulations, shedding light on how evaluation fidelity can be strategically leveraged in enhancing structure designs.

Learning Gentle Grasping from Human-Free Force Control Demonstration

Humans can steadily and gently grasp unfamiliar objects based on tactile perception. Robots still face challenges in achieving similar performance due to the difficulty of learning accurate grasp-force predictions and force control strategies that can be generalized from limited data. In this article, we propose an approach for learning grasping from ideal force control demonstrations, to achieve similar performance of human hands with limited data size. Our approach utilizes objects with known contact characteristics to automatically generate reference force curves without human demonstrations. In addition, we design the dual convolutional neural networks (Dual-CNN) architecture which incorporats a physics-based mechanics module for learning target grasping force predictions from demonstrations. The described method can be effectively applied in vision-based tactile sensors and enables gentle and stable grasping of objects from the ground. The described prediction model and grasping strategy were validated in offline evaluations and online experiments, and the accuracy and generalizability were demonstrated.

IFG: Internet-Scale Guidance for Functional Grasping Generation

Large Vision Models trained on internet-scale data have demonstrated strong capabilities in segmenting and semantically understanding object parts, even in cluttered, crowded scenes. However, while these models can direct a robot toward the general region of an object, they lack the geometric understanding required to precisely control dexterous robotic hands for 3D grasping. To overcome this, our key insight is to leverage simulation with a force-closure grasping generation pipeline that understands local geometries of the hand and object in the scene. Because this pipeline is slow and requires ground-truth observations, the resulting data is distilled into a diffusion model that operates in real-time on camera point clouds. By combining the global semantic understanding of internet-scale models with the geometric precision of a simulation-based locally-aware force-closure, \our achieves high-performance semantic grasping without any manually collected training data. Solvaformer: an SE(3)-equivariant graph transformer for small molecule solubility prediction

Accurate prediction of small molecule solubility using material-sparing approaches is critical for accelerating synthesis and process optimization, yet experimental measurement is costly and many learning approaches either depend on quantumderived descriptors or offer limited interpretability. We introduce Solvaformer, a geometry-aware graph transformer that models solutions as multiple molecules with independent SE(3) symmetries. The architecture combines intramolecular SE(3)-equivariant attention with intermolecular scalar attention, enabling cross-molecular communication without imposing spurious relative geometry. We train Solvaformer in a multi-task setting to predict both solubility (log S) and solvation free energy, using an alternating-batch regimen that trains on quantum-mechanical data (CombiSolv-QM) and on experimental measurements (BigSolDB 2.0). Solvaformer attains the strongest overall performance among the learned models and approaches a DFT-assisted gradient-boosting baseline, while outperforming an EquiformerV2 ablation and sequence-based alternatives. In addition, token-level attention produces chemically coherent attributions: case studies recover known intra- vs. inter-molecular hydrogen-bonding patterns that govern solubility differences in positional isomers. Taken together, Solvaformer provides an accurate, scalable, and interpretable approach to solution-phase property prediction by uniting geometric inductive bias with a mixed dataset training strategy on complementary computational and experimental data.

Confounding Robust Continuous Control via Automatic Reward Shaping

Reward shaping has been applied widely to accelerate Reinforcement Learning (RL) agents' training. However, a principled way of designing effective reward shaping functions, especially for complex continuous control problems, remains largely under-explained. In this work, we propose to automatically learn a reward shaping function for continuous control problems from offline datasets, potentially contaminated by unobserved confounding variables. Specifically, our method builds upon the recently proposed causal Bellman equation to learn a tight upper bound on the optimal state values, which is then used as the potentials in the Potential-Based Reward Shaping (PBRS) framework. Our proposed reward shaping algorithm is tested with Soft-Actor-Critic (SAC) on multiple commonly used continuous control benchmarks and exhibits strong performance guarantees under unobserved confounders. More broadly, our work marks a solid first step towards confounding robust continuous control from a causal perspective. From Pixels to Words -- Towards Native Vision-Language Primitives at Scale

The edifice of native Vision-Language Models (VLMs) has emerged as a rising contender to typical modular VLMs, shaped by evolving model architectures and training paradigms. Yet, two lingering clouds cast shadows over its widespread exploration and promotion: (-) What fundamental constraints set native VLMs apart from modular ones, and to what extent can these barriers be overcome? (-) How to make research in native VLMs more accessible and democratized, thereby accelerating progress in the field. In this paper, we clarify these challenges and outline guiding principles for constructing native VLMs. Specifically, one native VLM primitive should: (i) effectively align pixel and word representations within a shared semantic space; (ii) seamlessly integrate the strengths of formerly separate vision and language modules; (iii) inherently embody various cross-modal properties that support unified vision-language encoding, aligning, and reasoning. Hence, we launch NEO, a novel family of native VLMs built from first principles, capable of rivaling top-tier modular counterparts across diverse real-world scenarios. With only 390M image-text examples, NEO efficiently develops visual perception from scratch while mitigating vision-language conflicts inside a dense and monolithic model crafted from our elaborate primitives. We position NEO as a cornerstone for scalable and powerful native VLMs, paired with a rich set of reusable components that foster a cost-effective and extensible ecosystem. AttentionLego: An Open-Source Building Block For Spatially-Scalable Large Language Model Accelerator With Processing-In-Memory Technology

Large language models (LLMs) with Transformer architectures have become phenomenal in natural language processing, multimodal generative artificial intelligence, and agent-oriented artificial intelligence. The self-attention module is the most dominating sub-structure inside Transformer-based LLMs. Computation using general-purpose graphics processing units (GPUs) inflicts reckless demand for I/O bandwidth for transferring intermediate calculation results between memories and processing units. To tackle this challenge, this work develops a fully customized vanilla self-attention accelerator, AttentionLego, as the basic building block for constructing spatially expandable LLM processors. AttentionLego provides basic implementation with fully-customized digital logic incorporating Processing-In-Memory (PIM) technology. Towards Sample Efficient Agents through Algorithmic Alignment

In this work, we propose and explore Deep Graph Value Network (DeepGV) as a promising method to work around sample complexity in deep reinforcement-learning agents using a message-passing mechanism. The main idea is that the agent should be guided by structured non-neural-network algorithms like dynamic programming. According to recent advances in algorithmic alignment, neural networks with structured computation procedures can be trained efficiently. We demonstrate the potential of graph neural network in supporting sample efficient learning by showing that Deep Graph Value Network can outperform unstructured baselines by a large margin in solving the Markov Decision Process (MDP). Post-Earthquake Restoration of Electricity-Gas Distribution Systems with Damage Information Collection and Repair Vehicle Routing

Extreme events such as earthquakes pose significant threats to integrated electricity-gas distribution systems (IEGDS) by causing widespread damage. Existing restoration approaches typically assume full awareness of damage, which may not be true if monitoring and communication infrastructures are impaired. In such circumstances, field inspection is necessary. This paper presents a novel adaptive restoration framework for IEGDS, considering dynamic damage assessment and repair. The restoration problem is formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), capturing the gradually revealed contingency and the evolving impact of field crew actions. To address the computational challenges of POMDPs in real-time applications, an advanced belief tree search (BTS) algorithm is introduced. This algorithm enables crew members to continuously update their actions based on evolving belief states, leveraging comprehensive simulations to evaluate potential future trajectories and identify optimal inspection and repair strategies. Based on the BTS algorithm, a unified real-time decision-making framework is developed for IEGDS restoration. Case studies on two distinct IEGDS systems demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed method. The results indicate that the proposed approach achieves an outage cost comparable to the ideal solution, and reduces the total outage cost by more than 15% compared to strategies based on stochastic programming and heuristic methods.

DR.Experts: Differential Refinement of Distortion-Aware Experts for Blind Image Quality Assessment

Blind Image Quality Assessment, aiming to replicate human perception of visual quality without reference, plays a key role in vision tasks, yet existing models often fail to effectively capture subtle distortion cues, leading to a misalignment with human subjective judgments. We identify that the root cause of this limitation lies in the lack of reliable distortion priors, as methods typically learn shallow relationships between unified image features and quality scores, resulting in their insensitive nature to distortions and thus limiting their performance. To address this, we introduce DR.Experts, a novel prior-driven BIQA framework designed to explicitly incorporate distortion priors, enabling a reliable quality assessment. DR.Experts begins by leveraging a degradation-aware vision-language model to obtain distortion-specific priors, which are further refined and enhanced by the proposed Distortion-Saliency Differential Module through distinguishing them from semantic attentions, thereby ensuring the genuine representations of distortions. The refined priors, along with semantics and bridging representation, are then fused by a proposed mixture-of-experts style module named the Dynamic Distortion Weighting Module. This mechanism weights each distortion-specific feature as per its perceptual impact, ensuring that the final quality prediction aligns with human perception. Extensive experiments conducted on five challenging BIQA benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of DR.Experts over current methods and showcase its excellence in terms of generalization and data efficiency.

AmbiBench: Benchmarking Mobile GUI Agents Beyond One-Shot Instructions in the Wild

Benchmarks are paramount for gauging progress in the domain of Mobile GUI Agents. In practical scenarios, users frequently fail to articulate precise directives containing full task details at the onset, and their expressions are typically ambiguous. Consequently, agents are required to converge on the user's true intent via active clarification and interaction during execution. However, existing benchmarks predominantly operate under the idealized assumption that user-issued instructions are complete and unequivocal. This paradigm focuses exclusively on assessing single-turn execution while overlooking the alignment capability of the agent. To address this limitation, we introduce AmbiBench, the first benchmark incorporating a taxonomy of instruction clarity to shift evaluation from unidirectional instruction following to bidirectional intent alignment. Grounded in Cognitive Gap theory, we propose a taxonomy of four clarity levels: Detailed, Standard, Incomplete, and Ambiguous. We construct a rigorous dataset of 240 ecologically valid tasks across 25 applications, subject to strict review protocols. Furthermore, targeting evaluation in dynamic environments, we develop MUSE (Mobile User Satisfaction Evaluator), an automated framework utilizing an MLLM-as-a-judge multi-agent architecture. MUSE performs fine-grained auditing across three dimensions: Outcome Effectiveness, Execution Quality, and Interaction Quality. Empirical results on AmbiBench reveal the performance boundaries of SoTA agents across different clarity levels, quantify the gains derived from active interaction, and validate the strong correlation between MUSE and human judgment. This work redefines evaluation standards, laying the foundation for next-generation agents capable of truly understanding user intent.

Literature Meets Data: A Synergistic Approach to Hypothesis Generation

AI holds promise for transforming scientific processes, including hypothesis generation. Prior work on hypothesis generation can be broadly categorized into theory-driven and data-driven approaches. While both have proven effective in generating novel and plausible hypotheses, it remains an open question whether they can complement each other. To address this, we develop the first method that combines literature-based insights with data to perform LLM-powered hypothesis generation. We apply our method on five different datasets and demonstrate that integrating literature and data outperforms other baselines (8.97\% over few-shot, 15.75\% over literature-based alone, and 3.37\% over data-driven alone). Additionally, we conduct the first human evaluation to assess the utility of LLM-generated hypotheses in assisting human decision-making on two challenging tasks: deception detection and AI generated content detection. Our results show that human accuracy improves significantly by 7.44\% and 14.19\% on these tasks, respectively. These findings suggest that integrating literature-based and data-driven approaches provides a comprehensive and nuanced framework for hypothesis generation and could open new avenues for scientific inquiry.

Causally Aligned Curriculum Learning

A pervasive challenge in Reinforcement Learning (RL) is the "curse of dimensionality" which is the exponential growth in the state-action space when optimizing a high-dimensional target task. The framework of curriculum learning trains the agent in a curriculum composed of a sequence of related and more manageable source tasks. The expectation is that when some optimal decision rules are shared across source tasks and the target task, the agent could more quickly pick up the necessary skills to behave optimally in the environment, thus accelerating the learning process. However, this critical assumption of invariant optimal decision rules does not necessarily hold in many practical applications, specifically when the underlying environment contains unobserved confounders. This paper studies the problem of curriculum RL through causal lenses. We derive a sufficient graphical condition characterizing causally aligned source tasks, i.e., the invariance of optimal decision rules holds. We further develop an efficient algorithm to generate a causally aligned curriculum, provided with qualitative causal knowledge of the target task. Finally, we validate our proposed methodology through experiments in discrete and continuous confounded tasks with pixel observations.

HypoEval: Hypothesis-Guided Evaluation for Natural Language Generation

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated great potential for automating the evaluation of natural language generation. Previous frameworks of LLM-as-a-judge fall short in two ways: they either use zero-shot setting without consulting any human input, which leads to low alignment, or fine-tune LLMs on labeled data, which requires a non-trivial number of samples. Moreover, previous methods often provide little reasoning behind automated evaluations. In this paper, we propose HypoEval, Hypothesis-guided Evaluation framework, which first uses a small corpus of human evaluations to generate more detailed rubrics for human judgments and then incorporates a checklist-like approach to combine LLM's assigned scores on each decomposed dimension to acquire overall scores. With only 30 human evaluations, HypoEval achieves state-of-the-art performance in alignment with both human rankings (Spearman correlation) and human scores (Pearson correlation), on average outperforming G-Eval by 11.86% and fine-tuned Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct with at least 3 times more human evaluations by 11.95%. Furthermore, we conduct systematic studies to assess the robustness of HypoEval, highlighting its effectiveness as a reliable and interpretable automated evaluation framework.

NeuroLoRA: Context-Aware Neuromodulation for Parameter-Efficient Multi-Task Adaptation

Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) techniques, particularly Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA), have become essential for adapting Large Language Models (LLMs) to downstream tasks. While the recent FlyLoRA framework successfully leverages bio-inspired sparse random projections to mitigate parameter interference, it relies on a static, magnitude-based routing mechanism that is agnostic to input context. In this paper, we propose NeuroLoRA, a novel Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) based LoRA framework inspired by biological neuromodulation -- the dynamic regulation of neuronal excitability based on context. NeuroLoRA retains the computational efficiency of frozen random projections while introducing a lightweight, learnable neuromodulation gate that contextually rescales the projection space prior to expert selection. We further propose a Contrastive Orthogonality Loss to explicitly enforce separation between expert subspaces, enhancing both task decoupling and continual learning capacity. Extensive experiments on MMLU, GSM8K, and ScienceQA demonstrate that NeuroLoRA consistently outperforms FlyLoRA and other strong baselines across single-task adaptation, multi-task model merging, and sequential continual learning scenarios, while maintaining comparable parameter efficiency.

Causal Flow Q-Learning for Robust Offline Reinforcement Learning

Expressive policies based on flow-matching have been successfully applied in reinforcement learning (RL) more recently due to their ability to model complex action distributions from offline data. These algorithms build on standard policy gradients, which assume that there is no unmeasured confounding in the data. However, this condition does not necessarily hold for pixel-based demonstrations when a mismatch exists between the demonstrator's and the learner's sensory capabilities, leading to implicit confounding biases in offline data. We address the challenge by investigating the problem of confounded observations in offline RL from a causal perspective. We develop a novel causal offline RL objective that optimizes policies' worst-case performance that may arise due to confounding biases. Based on this new objective, we introduce a practical implementation that learns expressive flow-matching policies from confounded demonstrations, employing a deep discriminator to assess the discrepancy between the target policy and the nominal behavioral policy. Experiments across 25 pixel-based tasks demonstrate that our proposed confounding-robust augmentation procedure achieves a success rate 120\% that of confounding-unaware, state-of-the-art offline RL methods.

Confounding Robust Deep Reinforcement Learning: A Causal Approach

A key task in Artificial Intelligence is learning effective policies for controlling agents in unknown environments to optimize performance measures. Off-policy learning methods, like Q-learning, allow learners to make optimal decisions based on past experiences. This paper studies off-policy learning from biased data in complex and high-dimensional domains where \emph{unobserved confounding} cannot be ruled out a priori. Building on the well-celebrated Deep Q-Network (DQN), we propose a novel deep reinforcement learning algorithm robust to confounding biases in observed data. Specifically, our algorithm attempts to find a safe policy for the worst-case environment compatible with the observations. We apply our method to twelve confounded Atari games, and find that it consistently dominates the standard DQN in all games where the observed input to the behavioral and target policies mismatch and unobserved confounders exist.

Fairy: Interactive Mobile Assistant to Real-world Tasks via LMM-based Multi-agent

Large multi-modal models (LMMs) have advanced mobile GUI agents. However, existing methods struggle with real-world scenarios involving diverse app interfaces and evolving user needs. End-to-end methods relying on model's commonsense often fail on long-tail apps, and agents without user interaction act unilaterally, harming user experience. To address these limitations, we propose Fairy, an interactive multi-agent mobile assistant capable of continuously accumulating app knowledge and self-evolving during usage. Fairy enables cross-app collaboration, interactive execution, and continual learning through three core modules:(i) a Global Task Planner that decomposes user tasks into sub-tasks from a cross-app view; (ii) an App-Level Executor that refines sub-tasks into steps and actions based on long- and short-term memory, achieving precise execution and user interaction via four core agents operating in dual loops; and (iii) a Self-Learner that consolidates execution experience into App Map and Tricks. To evaluate Fairy, we introduce RealMobile-Eval, a real-world benchmark with a comprehensive metric suite, and LMM-based agents for automated scoring. Experiments show that Fairy with GPT-4o backbone outperforms the previous SoTA by improving user requirement completion by 33.7% and reducing redundant steps by 58.5%, showing the effectiveness of its interaction and self-learning.

Learning Generalizable Behavior via Visual Rewrite Rules

Though deep reinforcement learning agents have achieved unprecedented success in recent years, their learned policies can be brittle, failing to generalize to even slight modifications of their environments or unfamiliar situations. The black-box nature of the neural network learning dynamics makes it impossible to audit trained deep agents and recover from such failures. In this paper, we propose a novel representation and learning approach to capture environment dynamics without using neural networks. It originates from the observation that, in games designed for people, the effect of an action can often be perceived in the form of local changes in consecutive visual observations. Our algorithm is designed to extract such vision-based changes and condense them into a set of action-dependent descriptive rules, which we call ''visual rewrite rules'' (VRRs). We also present preliminary results from a VRR agent that can explore, expand its rule set, and solve a game via planning with its learned VRR world model. In several classical games, our non-deep agent demonstrates superior performance, extreme sample efficiency, and robust generalization ability compared with several mainstream deep agents.

Deep Compression of Neural Networks for Fault Detection on Tennessee Eastman Chemical Processes

Artificial neural network has achieved the state-of-art performance in fault detection on the Tennessee Eastman process, but it often requires enormous memory to fund its massive parameters. In order to implement online real-time fault detection, three deep compression techniques (pruning, clustering, and quantization) are applied to reduce the computational burden. We have extensively studied 7 different combinations of compression techniques, all methods achieve high model compression rates over 64% while maintain high fault detection accuracy. The best result is applying all three techniques, which reduces the model sizes by 91.5% and remains a high accuracy over 94%. This result leads to a smaller storage requirement in production environments, and makes the deployment smoother in real world.

Are L2 adversarial examples intrinsically different?

Deep Neural Network (DDN) has achieved notable success in various tasks, including many security concerning scenarios. However, a considerable amount of work has proved its vulnerability to adversaries. We unravel the properties that can intrinsically differentiate adversarial examples and normal inputs through theoretical analysis. That is, adversarial examples generated by $L_2$ attacks usually have larger input sensitivity which can be used to identify them efficiently. We also found that those generated by $L_\infty$ attacks will be different enough in the pixel domain to be detected empirically. To verify our analysis, we proposed a \textbf{G}uided \textbf{C}omplementary \textbf{D}efense module (\textbf{GCD}) integrating detection and recovery processes. When compared with adversarial detection methods, our detector achieves a detection AUC of over 0.98 against most of the attacks. When comparing our guided rectifier with commonly used adversarial training methods and other rectification methods, our rectifier outperforms them by a large margin. We achieve a recovered classification accuracy of up to 99\% on MNIST, 89\% on CIFAR-10, and 87\% on ImageNet subsets against $L_2$ attacks. Furthermore, under the white-box setting, our holistic defensive module shows a promising degree of robustness. Thus, we confirm that at least $L_2$ adversarial examples are intrinsically different enough from normal inputs both theoretically and empirically. And we shed light upon designing simple yet effective defensive methods with these properties.
