Reconstructing Movement from Sparse Samples: Enhanced Spatio-Temporal Matching Strategies for Low-Frequency Data

Ali Yousefian, Arianna Burzacchi, Simone Vantini

This paper explores potential improvements to the Spatial-Temporal Matching algorithm for aligning the GPS trajectories to road networks. While this algorithm is effective, it presents some limitations in computational efficiency and the accuracy of the results, especially in dense environments with relatively high sampling intervals. To address this, the paper proposes four modifications to the original algorithm: a dynamic buffer, an adaptive observation probability, a redesigned temporal scoring function, and a behavioral analysis to account for the historical mobility patterns. The enhancements are assessed using real-world data from the urban area of Milan, and through newly defined evaluation metrics to be applied in the absence of ground truth. The results of the experiment show significant improvements in performance efficiency and path quality across various metrics.

Evaluating Impacts of Traffic Regulations in Complex Mobility Systems Using Scenario-Based Simulations

Arianna Burzacchi, Marco Pistore

Urban traffic regulation policies are increasingly used to address congestion, emissions, and accessibility in cities, yet their impacts are difficult to assess due to the socio-technical complexity of urban mobility systems. Recent advances in data availability and computational power enable new forms of model-driven, simulation-based decision support for transportation policy design. This paper proposes a novel simulation paradigm for the ex-ante evaluation of direct and indirect impacts, spanning traffic conditions, transportation-related effects and economic accessibility. The approach integrates a multi-layer urban mobility model combining a physical layer of mobility flows and emissions with a social layer capturing behavioral responses and adaptation to policy changes. Real-world data are used to instantiate the current as-is scenario, while policy alternatives and behavioral assumptions are encoded as model parameters to generate multiple what-if scenarios. The framework supports systematic comparison across scenarios by analyzing variations in simulated outcomes induced by policy interventions. The proposed approach is illustrated through a case study that aims to assess the impacts of the introduction of broad urban traffic restriction schemes. Results demonstrate the framework's ability to explore alternative regulatory designs and user responses, supporting informed and anticipatory evaluation of urban traffic policies.

Enhancing Interactive Voting-Based Map Matching: Improving Efficiency and Robustness for Heterogeneous GPS Trajectories

William Alemanni, Arianna Burzacchi, Davide Colombi et al.

This paper presents an enhanced version of the Interactive Voting-Based Map Matching algorithm, designed to efficiently process trajectories with varying sampling rates. The main aim is to reconstruct GPS trajectories with high accuracy, independent of input data quality. Building upon the original algorithm, developed exclusively for aligning GPS signals to road networks, we extend its capabilities by integrating trajectory imputation. Our improvements also include the implementation of a distance-bounded interactive voting strategy to reduce computational complexity, as well as modifications to address missing data in the road network. Furthermore, we incorporate a custom-built asset derived from OpenStreetMap, enabling this approach to be smoothly applied in any geographic region covered by OpenStreetMap's road network. These advancements preserve the core strengths of the original algorithm while significantly extending its applicability to diverse real-world scenarios.
