Towards Generic and Controllable Attacks Against Object DetectionGuopeng Li, Yue Xu, Jian Ding et al.
Existing adversarial attacks against Object Detectors (ODs) suffer from two inherent limitations. Firstly, ODs have complicated meta-structure designs, hence most advanced attacks for ODs concentrate on attacking specific detector-intrinsic structures, which makes it hard for them to work on other detectors and motivates us to design a generic attack against ODs. Secondly, most works against ODs make Adversarial Examples (AEs) by generalizing image-level attacks from classification to detection, which brings redundant computations and perturbations in semantically meaningless areas (e.g., backgrounds) and leads to an emergency for seeking controllable attacks for ODs. To this end, we propose a generic white-box attack, LGP (local perturbations with adaptively global attacks), to blind mainstream object detectors with controllable perturbations. For a detector-agnostic attack, LGP tracks high-quality proposals and optimizes three heterogeneous losses simultaneously. In this way, we can fool the crucial components of ODs with a part of their outputs without the limitations of specific structures. Regarding controllability, we establish an object-wise constraint that exploits foreground-background separation adaptively to induce the attachment of perturbations to foregrounds. Experimentally, the proposed LGP successfully attacked sixteen state-of-the-art object detectors on MS-COCO and DOTA datasets, with promising imperceptibility and transferability obtained. COP-Q: Safety-First Reinforcement Learning for Robot Control via Cholesky-Ordered ProjectionGuopeng Li, Moritz A. Zanger, Matthijs T. J. Spaan et al.
Safe robot control requires maximizing return while satisfying safety constraints. In off-policy safe reinforcement learning, reward and safety Q-values are commonly learned by separate critic ensembles, with uncertainty handled independently for each objective. This objective-wise treatment neglects inter-objective correlation and can lead to overly conservative value estimates, thereby reducing sample efficiency. To address this issue, we propose Cholesky-Ordered Projection Q-learning (COP-Q), a safety-first method that incorporates inter-objective covariance into vector-valued Q-value estimation. COP-Q constructs a generalized confidence bound in the joint Q-value space and uses Cholesky factorization to encode objective priority in a sequential form. This preserves conservatism on safety while adaptively reducing excessive conservatism on the reward objective. The resulting estimate is used in both temporal-difference target computation and actor optimization. COP-Q incurs minimal computational overhead and is readily compatible with most existing deep Q-learning frameworks. Experiments on robot locomotion in Brax and safe navigation in Safety-Gymnasium, covering both hard- and soft-safety settings, demonstrate that COP-Q achieves strong safety performance together with competitive or improved sample efficiency relative to representative baselines.

We present STEP3-VL-10B, a lightweight open-source foundation model designed to redefine the trade-off between compact efficiency and frontier-level multimodal intelligence. STEP3-VL-10B is realized through two strategic shifts: first, a unified, fully unfrozen pre-training strategy on 1.2T multimodal tokens that integrates a language-aligned Perception Encoder with a Qwen3-8B decoder to establish intrinsic vision-language synergy; and second, a scaled post-training pipeline featuring over 1k iterations of reinforcement learning. Crucially, we implement Parallel Coordinated Reasoning (PaCoRe) to scale test-time compute, allocating resources to scalable perceptual reasoning that explores and synthesizes diverse visual hypotheses. Consequently, despite its compact 10B footprint, STEP3-VL-10B rivals or surpasses models 10$\times$-20$\times$ larger (e.g., GLM-4.6V-106B, Qwen3-VL-235B) and top-tier proprietary flagships like Gemini 2.5 Pro and Seed-1.5-VL. Delivering best-in-class performance, it records 92.2% on MMBench and 80.11% on MMMU, while excelling in complex reasoning with 94.43% on AIME2025 and 75.95% on MathVision. We release the full model suite to provide the community with a powerful, efficient, and reproducible baseline.

GENIUS: Generative Fluid Intelligence Evaluation SuiteRuichuan An, Sihan Yang, Ziyu Guo et al.
Unified Multimodal Models (UMMs) have shown remarkable progress in visual generation. Yet, existing benchmarks predominantly assess $\textit{Crystallized Intelligence}$, which relies on recalling accumulated knowledge and learned schemas. This focus overlooks $\textit{Generative Fluid Intelligence (GFI)}$: the capacity to induce patterns, reason through constraints, and adapt to novel scenarios on the fly. To rigorously assess this capability, we introduce $\textbf{GENIUS}$ ($\textbf{GEN}$ Fluid $\textbf{I}$ntelligence Eval$\textbf{U}$ation $\textbf{S}$uite). We formalize $\textit{GFI}$ as a synthesis of three primitives. These include $\textit{Inducing Implicit Patterns}$ (e.g., inferring personalized visual preferences), $\textit{Executing Ad-hoc Constraints}$ (e.g., visualizing abstract metaphors), and $\textit{Adapting to Contextual Knowledge}$ (e.g., simulating counter-intuitive physics). Collectively, these primitives challenge models to solve problems grounded entirely in the immediate context. Our systematic evaluation of 12 representative models reveals significant performance deficits in these tasks. Crucially, our diagnostic analysis disentangles these failure modes. It demonstrates that deficits stem from limited context comprehension rather than insufficient intrinsic generative capability. To bridge this gap, we propose a training-free attention intervention strategy. Ultimately, $\textbf{GENIUS}$ establishes a rigorous standard for $\textit{GFI}$, guiding the field beyond knowledge utilization toward dynamic, general-purpose reasoning. GEBench: Benchmarking Image Generation Models as GUI EnvironmentsHaodong Li, Jingwei Wu, Quan Sun et al.
Recent advancements in image generation models have enabled the prediction of future Graphical User Interface (GUI) states based on user instructions. However, existing benchmarks primarily focus on general domain visual fidelity, leaving the evaluation of state transitions and temporal coherence in GUI-specific contexts underexplored. To address this gap, we introduce GEBench, a comprehensive benchmark for evaluating dynamic interaction and temporal coherence in GUI generation. GEBench comprises 700 carefully curated samples spanning five task categories, covering both single-step interactions and multi-step trajectories across real-world and fictional scenarios, as well as grounding point localization. To support systematic evaluation, we propose GE-Score, a novel five-dimensional metric that assesses Goal Achievement, Interaction Logic, Content Consistency, UI Plausibility, and Visual Quality. Extensive evaluations on current models indicate that while they perform well on single-step transitions, they struggle significantly with maintaining temporal coherence and spatial grounding over longer interaction sequences. Our findings identify icon interpretation, text rendering, and localization precision as critical bottlenecks. This work provides a foundation for systematic assessment and suggests promising directions for future research toward building high-fidelity generative GUI environments. PEARL: Personalized Streaming Video Understanding ModelYuanhong Zheng, Ruichuan An, Xiaopeng Lin et al.
Human cognition of new concepts is inherently a streaming process: we continuously recognize new objects or identities and update our memories over time. However, current multimodal personalization methods are largely limited to static images or offline videos. This disconnects continuous visual input from instant real-world feedback, limiting their ability to provide the real-time, interactive personalized responses essential for future AI assistants. To bridge this gap, we first propose and formally define the novel task of Personalized Streaming Video Understanding (PSVU). To facilitate research in this new direction, we introduce PEARL-Bench, the first comprehensive benchmark designed specifically to evaluate this challenging setting. It evaluates a model's ability to respond to personalized concepts at exact timestamps under two modes: (1) Frame-level, focusing on a specific person or object in discrete frames, and (2) a novel Video-level, focusing on personalized actions unfolding across continuous frames. PEARL-Bench comprises 132 unique videos and 2,173 fine-grained annotations with precise timestamps. Concept diversity and annotation quality are strictly ensured through a combined pipeline of automated generation and human verification. To tackle this challenging new setting, we further propose PEARL, a plug-and-play, training-free strategy that serves as a strong baseline. Extensive evaluations across 8 offline and online models demonstrate that PEARL achieves state-of-the-art performance. Notably, it brings consistent PSVU improvements when applied to 3 distinct architectures, proving to be a highly effective and robust strategy. We hope this work advances vision-language model (VLM) personalization and inspires further research into streaming personalized AI assistants. Step 3.5 Flash: Open Frontier-Level Intelligence with 11B Active ParametersAilin Huang, Ang Li, Aobo Kong et al.
We introduce Step 3.5 Flash, a sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model that bridges frontier-level agentic intelligence and computational efficiency. We focus on what matters most when building agents: sharp reasoning and fast, reliable execution. Step 3.5 Flash pairs a 196B-parameter foundation with 11B active parameters for efficient inference. It is optimized with interleaved 3:1 sliding-window/full attention and Multi-Token Prediction (MTP-3) to reduce the latency and cost of multi-round agentic interactions. To reach frontier-level intelligence, we design a scalable reinforcement learning framework that combines verifiable signals with preference feedback, while remaining stable under large-scale off-policy training, enabling consistent self-improvement across mathematics, code, and tool use. Step 3.5 Flash demonstrates strong performance across agent, coding, and math tasks, achieving 85.4% on IMO-AnswerBench, 86.4% on LiveCodeBench-v6 (2024.08-2025.05), 88.2% on tau2-Bench, 69.0% on BrowseComp (with context management), and 51.0% on Terminal-Bench 2.0, comparable to frontier models such as GPT-5.2 xHigh and Gemini 3.0 Pro. By redefining the efficiency frontier, Step 3.5 Flash provides a high-density foundation for deploying sophisticated agents in real-world industrial environments.

Distil the informative essence of loop detector data set: Is network-level traffic forecasting hungry for more data?Guopeng Li, Victor L. Knoop, J. W. C. et al.
Network-level traffic condition forecasting has been intensively studied for decades. Although prediction accuracy has been continuously improved with emerging deep learning models and ever-expanding traffic data, traffic forecasting still faces many challenges in practice. These challenges include the robustness of data-driven models, the inherent unpredictability of traffic dynamics, and whether further improvement of traffic forecasting requires more sensor data. In this paper, we focus on this latter question and particularly on data from loop detectors. To answer this, we propose an uncertainty-aware traffic forecasting framework to explore how many samples of loop data are truly effective for training forecasting models. Firstly, the model design combines traffic flow theory with graph neural networks, ensuring the robustness of prediction and uncertainty quantification. Secondly, evidential learning is employed to quantify different sources of uncertainty in a single pass. The estimated uncertainty is used to "distil" the essence of the dataset that sufficiently covers the information content. Results from a case study of a highway network around Amsterdam show that, from 2018 to 2021, more than 80\% of the data during daytime can be removed. The remaining 20\% samples have equal prediction power for training models. This result suggests that indeed large traffic datasets can be subdivided into significantly smaller but equally informative datasets. From these findings, we conclude that the proposed methodology proves valuable in evaluating large traffic datasets' true information content. Further extensions, such as extracting smaller, spatially non-redundant datasets, are possible with this method.

Step1X-Edit: A Practical Framework for General Image EditingShiyu Liu, Yucheng Han, Peng Xing et al. · tsinghua
In recent years, image editing models have witnessed remarkable and rapid development. The recent unveiling of cutting-edge multimodal models such as GPT-4o and Gemini2 Flash has introduced highly promising image editing capabilities. These models demonstrate an impressive aptitude for fulfilling a vast majority of user-driven editing requirements, marking a significant advancement in the field of image manipulation. However, there is still a large gap between the open-source algorithm with these closed-source models. Thus, in this paper, we aim to release a state-of-the-art image editing model, called Step1X-Edit, which can provide comparable performance against the closed-source models like GPT-4o and Gemini2 Flash. More specifically, we adopt the Multimodal LLM to process the reference image and the user's editing instruction. A latent embedding has been extracted and integrated with a diffusion image decoder to obtain the target image. To train the model, we build a data generation pipeline to produce a high-quality dataset. For evaluation, we develop the GEdit-Bench, a novel benchmark rooted in real-world user instructions. Experimental results on GEdit-Bench demonstrate that Step1X-Edit outperforms existing open-source baselines by a substantial margin and approaches the performance of leading proprietary models, thereby making significant contributions to the field of image editing.

Off-Policy Safe Reinforcement Learning with Constrained Optimistic ExplorationGuopeng Li, Matthijs T. J. Spaan, Julian F. P. Kooij
When safety is formulated as a limit of cumulative cost, safe reinforcement learning (RL) aims to learn policies that maximize return subject to the cost constraint in data collection and deployment. Off-policy safe RL methods, although offering high sample efficiency, suffer from constraint violations due to cost-agnostic exploration and estimation bias in cumulative cost. To address this issue, we propose Constrained Optimistic eXploration Q-learning (COX-Q), an off-policy safe RL algorithm that integrates cost-bounded online exploration and conservative offline distributional value learning. First, we introduce a novel cost-constrained optimistic exploration strategy that resolves gradient conflicts between reward and cost in the action space and adaptively adjusts the trust region to control the training cost. Second, we adopt truncated quantile critics to stabilize the cost value learning. Quantile critics also quantify epistemic uncertainty to guide exploration. Experiments on safe velocity, safe navigation, and autonomous driving tasks demonstrate that COX-Q achieves high sample efficiency, competitive test safety performance, and controlled data collection cost. The results highlight COX-Q as a promising RL method for safety-critical applications.

Unleashing Unlabeled Data: A Paradigm for Cross-View Geo-LocalizationGuopeng Li, Ming Qian, Gui-Song Xia
This paper investigates the effective utilization of unlabeled data for large-area cross-view geo-localization (CVGL), encompassing both unsupervised and semi-supervised settings. Common approaches to CVGL rely on ground-satellite image pairs and employ label-driven supervised training. However, the cost of collecting precise cross-view image pairs hinders the deployment of CVGL in real-life scenarios. Without the pairs, CVGL will be more challenging to handle the significant imaging and spatial gaps between ground and satellite images. To this end, we propose an unsupervised framework including a cross-view projection to guide the model for retrieving initial pseudo-labels and a fast re-ranking mechanism to refine the pseudo-labels by leveraging the fact that ``the perfectly paired ground-satellite image is located in a unique and identical scene". The framework exhibits competitive performance compared with supervised works on three open-source benchmarks. Our code and models will be released on https://github.com/liguopeng0923/UCVGL.

Pattern retrieval of traffic congestion using graph-based associations of traffic domain-specific featuresTin T. Nguyen, Simeon C. Calvert, Guopeng Li et al.
The fast-growing amount of traffic data brings many opportunities for revealing more insightful information about traffic dynamics. However, it also demands an effective database management system in which information retrieval is arguably an important feature. The ability to locate similar patterns in big datasets potentially paves the way for further valuable analyses in traffic management. This paper proposes a content-based retrieval system for spatiotemporal patterns of highway traffic congestion. There are two main components in our framework, namely pattern representation and similarity measurement. To effectively interpret retrieval outcomes, the paper proposes a graph-based approach (relation-graph) for the former component, in which fundamental traffic phenomena are encoded as nodes and their spatiotemporal relationships as edges. In the latter component, the similarities between congestion patterns are customizable with various aspects according to user expectations. We evaluated the proposed framework by applying it to a dataset of hundreds of patterns with various complexities (temporally and spatially). The example queries indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method, i.e. the obtained patterns present similar traffic phenomena as in the given examples. In addition, the success of the proposed approach directly derives a new opportunity for semantic retrieval, in which expected patterns are described by adopting the relation-graph notion to associate fundamental traffic phenomena.

NextStep-1: Toward Autoregressive Image Generation with Continuous Tokens at ScaleNextStep Team, Chunrui Han, Guopeng Li et al. · tsinghua
Prevailing autoregressive (AR) models for text-to-image generation either rely on heavy, computationally-intensive diffusion models to process continuous image tokens, or employ vector quantization (VQ) to obtain discrete tokens with quantization loss. In this paper, we push the autoregressive paradigm forward with NextStep-1, a 14B autoregressive model paired with a 157M flow matching head, training on discrete text tokens and continuous image tokens with next-token prediction objectives. NextStep-1 achieves state-of-the-art performance for autoregressive models in text-to-image generation tasks, exhibiting strong capabilities in high-fidelity image synthesis. Furthermore, our method shows strong performance in image editing, highlighting the power and versatility of our unified approach. To facilitate open research, we will release our code and models to the community.

Fuse Before Transfer: Knowledge Fusion for Heterogeneous DistillationGuopeng Li, Qiang Wang, Ke Yan et al.
Most knowledge distillation (KD) methodologies predominantly focus on teacher-student pairs with similar architectures, such as both being convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, the potential and flexibility of KD can be greatly improved by expanding it to novel Cross-Architecture KD (CAKD), where the knowledge of homogeneous and heterogeneous teachers can be transferred flexibly to a given student. The primary challenge in CAKD lies in the substantial feature gaps between heterogeneous models, originating from the distinction of their inherent inductive biases and module functions. To this end, we introduce an assistant model as a bridge to facilitate smooth feature knowledge transfer between heterogeneous teachers and students. More importantly, within our proposed design principle, the assistant model combines the advantages of cross-architecture inductive biases and module functions by merging convolution and attention modules derived from both student and teacher module functions. Furthermore, we observe that heterogeneous features exhibit diverse spatial distributions in CAKD, hindering the effectiveness of conventional pixel-wise mean squared error (MSE) loss. Therefore, we leverage a spatial-agnostic InfoNCE loss to align features after spatial smoothing, thereby improving the feature alignments in CAKD. Our proposed method is evaluated across some homogeneous model pairs and arbitrary heterogeneous combinations of CNNs, ViTs, and MLPs, achieving state-of-the-art performance for distilled models with a maximum gain of 11.47% on CIFAR-100 and 3.67% on ImageNet-1K. Astraea: A State-Aware Scheduling Engine for LLM-Powered AgentsHongqiu Ni, Jiabao Zhang, Guopeng Li et al.
Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly being deployed as intelligent agents. Their multi-stage workflows, which alternate between local computation and calls to external network services like Web APIs, introduce a mismatch in their execution pattern and the scheduling granularity of existing inference systems such as vLLM. Existing systems typically focus on per-segment optimization which prevents them from minimizing the end-to-end latency of the complete agentic workflow, i.e., the global Job Completion Time (JCT) over the entire request lifecycle. To address this limitation, we propose Astraea, a service engine designed to shift the optimization from local segments to the global request lifecycle. Astraea employs a state-aware, hierarchical scheduling algorithm that integrates a request's historical state with future predictions. It dynamically classifies requests by their I/O and compute intensive nature and uses an enhanced HRRN policy to balance efficiency and fairness. Astraea also implements an adaptive KV cache manager that intelligently handles the agent state during I/O waits based on the system memory pressure. Extensive experiments show that Astraea reduces average JCT by up to 25.5\% compared to baseline methods. Moreover, our approach demonstrates strong robustness and stability under high load across various model scales.

You Think, You ACT: The New Task of Arbitrary Text to Motion GenerationRunqi Wang, Caoyuan Ma, Guopeng Li et al.
Text to Motion aims to generate human motions from texts. Existing settings rely on limited Action Texts that include action labels, which limits flexibility and practicability in scenarios difficult to describe directly. This paper extends limited Action Texts to arbitrary ones. Scene texts without explicit action labels can enhance the practicality of models in complex and diverse industries such as virtual human interaction, robot behavior generation, and film production, while also supporting the exploration of potential implicit behavior patterns. However, newly introduced Scene Texts may yield multiple reasonable output results, causing significant challenges in existing data, framework, and evaluation. To address this practical issue, we first create a new dataset HUMANML3D++ by extending texts of the largest existing dataset HUMANML3D. Secondly, we propose a simple yet effective framework that extracts action instructions from arbitrary texts and subsequently generates motions. Furthermore, we also benchmark this new setting with multi-solution metrics to address the inadequacies of existing single-solution metrics. Extensive experiments indicate that Text to Motion in this realistic setting is challenging, fostering new research in this practical direction.

Step-GUI Technical ReportHaolong Yan, Jia Wang, Xin Huang et al.
Recent advances in multimodal large language models unlock unprecedented opportunities for GUI automation. However, a fundamental challenge remains: how to efficiently acquire high-quality training data while maintaining annotation reliability? We introduce a self-evolving training pipeline powered by the Calibrated Step Reward System, which converts model-generated trajectories into reliable training signals through trajectory-level calibration, achieving >90% annotation accuracy with 10-100x lower cost. Leveraging this pipeline, we introduce Step-GUI, a family of models (4B/8B) that achieves state-of-the-art GUI performance (8B: 80.2% AndroidWorld, 48.5% OSWorld, 62.6% ScreenShot-Pro) while maintaining robust general capabilities. As GUI agent capabilities improve, practical deployment demands standardized interfaces across heterogeneous devices while protecting user privacy. To this end, we propose GUI-MCP, the first Model Context Protocol for GUI automation with hierarchical architecture that combines low-level atomic operations and high-level task delegation to local specialist models, enabling high-privacy execution where sensitive data stays on-device. Finally, to assess whether agents can handle authentic everyday usage, we introduce AndroidDaily, a benchmark grounded in real-world mobile usage patterns with 3146 static actions and 235 end-to-end tasks across high-frequency daily scenarios (8B: static 89.91%, end-to-end 52.50%). Our work advances the development of practical GUI agents and demonstrates strong potential for real-world deployment in everyday digital interactions.

Energy Score-based Pseudo-Label Filtering and Adaptive Loss for Imbalanced Semi-supervised SAR target recognitionXinzheng Zhang, Yuqing Luo, Guopeng Li
Automatic target recognition (ATR) is an important use case for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image interpretation. Recent years have seen significant advancements in SAR ATR technology based on semi-supervised learning. However, existing semi-supervised SAR ATR algorithms show low recognition accuracy in the case of class imbalance. This work offers a non-balanced semi-supervised SAR target recognition approach using dynamic energy scores and adaptive loss. First, an energy score-based method is developed to dynamically select unlabeled samples near to the training distribution as pseudo-labels during training, assuring pseudo-label reliability in long-tailed distribution circumstances. Secondly, loss functions suitable for class imbalances are proposed, including adaptive margin perception loss and adaptive hard triplet loss, the former offsets inter-class confusion of classifiers, alleviating the imbalance issue inherent in pseudo-label generation. The latter effectively tackles the model's preference for the majority class by focusing on complex difficult samples during training. Experimental results on extremely imbalanced SAR datasets demonstrate that the proposed method performs well under the dual constraints of scarce labels and data imbalance, effectively overcoming the model bias caused by data imbalance and achieving high-precision target recognition.
