ByT5 model for massively multilingual grapheme-to-phoneme conversion

In this study, we tackle massively multilingual grapheme-to-phoneme conversion through implementing G2P models based on ByT5. We have curated a G2P dataset from various sources that covers around 100 languages and trained large-scale multilingual G2P models based on ByT5. We found that ByT5 operating on byte-level inputs significantly outperformed the token-based mT5 model in terms of multilingual G2P. Pairwise comparison with monolingual models in these languages suggests that multilingual ByT5 models generally lower the phone error rate by jointly learning from a variety of languages. The pretrained model can further benefit low resource G2P through zero-shot prediction on unseen languages or provides pretrained weights for finetuning, which helps the model converge to a lower phone error rate than randomly initialized weights. Impedance Modeling and Stability Analysis of Droop-Controlled Inverter Under Unbalanced Power Grid Operating Conditions

With the growing integration of renewable energy sources into power grids, the risks of oscillation caused by interactions between grid-tied inverters and the grids are becoming increasingly prominent. Although existing studies have made significant progress in inverter modeling and oscillatory stability analysis, most of them do not sufficiently consider complex mirror frequency coupling effects (MFCE) under unbalanced operating conditions, leading to unreliable models and erroneous stability analysis results. To address this inadequacy, this work develops a novel sequence impedance modeling scheme that can be widely applied to unbalanced operating conditions. In particular, taking a representative type of grid-forming inverter for instance, i.e., droop-controlled inverter (DCI), a single-input single-output sequence impedance modeling method based on harmonic linearization (HL) is proposed to comprehensively model both a given DCI and the connected grid. By accounting for multi-frequency interactions within the DCI, this method captures MFCE and unbalanced factors, leading to a more accurate impedance model. Further, the dominant factors influencing system stability are identified with a combination of normalized sensitivity analysis and proportional weighting. Finally, the detailed impacts of these dominant factors on system stability margin under three typical unbalanced operating conditions are analyzed through the Bode criterion. The effectiveness and reliability of the whole scheme proposed in this work are validated on the constructed grid-connected droop-controlled experimental platform.

Collaborative Camouflaged Object Detection: A Large-Scale Dataset and Benchmark

In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study on a new task called collaborative camouflaged object detection (CoCOD), which aims to simultaneously detect camouflaged objects with the same properties from a group of relevant images. To this end, we meticulously construct the first large-scale dataset, termed CoCOD8K, which consists of 8,528 high-quality and elaborately selected images with object mask annotations, covering 5 superclasses and 70 subclasses. The dataset spans a wide range of natural and artificial camouflage scenes with diverse object appearances and backgrounds, making it a very challenging dataset for CoCOD. Besides, we propose the first baseline model for CoCOD, named bilateral-branch network (BBNet), which explores and aggregates co-camouflaged cues within a single image and between images within a group, respectively, for accurate camouflaged object detection in given images. This is implemented by an inter-image collaborative feature exploration (CFE) module, an intra-image object feature search (OFS) module, and a local-global refinement (LGR) module. We benchmark 18 state-of-the-art models, including 12 COD algorithms and 6 CoSOD algorithms, on the proposed CoCOD8K dataset under 5 widely used evaluation metrics. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the significantly superior performance compared to other competitors. Learning to Solve Multiple-TSP with Time Window and Rejections via Deep Reinforcement Learning

We propose a manager-worker framework based on deep reinforcement learning to tackle a hard yet nontrivial variant of Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP), \ie~multiple-vehicle TSP with time window and rejections (mTSPTWR), where customers who cannot be served before the deadline are subject to rejections. Particularly, in the proposed framework, a manager agent learns to divide mTSPTWR into sub-routing tasks by assigning customers to each vehicle via a Graph Isomorphism Network (GIN) based policy network. A worker agent learns to solve sub-routing tasks by minimizing the cost in terms of both tour length and rejection rate for each vehicle, the maximum of which is then fed back to the manager agent to learn better assignments. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms strong baselines in terms of higher solution quality and shorter computation time. More importantly, the trained agents also achieve competitive performance for solving unseen larger instances.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Guided Improvement Heuristic for Job Shop Scheduling

Recent studies in using deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to solve Job-shop scheduling problems (JSSP) focus on construction heuristics. However, their performance is still far from optimality, mainly because the underlying graph representation scheme is unsuitable for modelling partial solutions at each construction step. This paper proposes a novel DRL-guided improvement heuristic for solving JSSP, where graph representation is employed to encode complete solutions. We design a Graph Neural-Network-based representation scheme, consisting of two modules to effectively capture the information of dynamic topology and different types of nodes in graphs encountered during the improvement process. To speed up solution evaluation during improvement, we present a novel message-passing mechanism that can evaluate multiple solutions simultaneously. We prove that the computational complexity of our method scales linearly with problem size. Experiments on classic benchmarks show that the improvement policy learned by our method outperforms state-of-the-art DRL-based methods by a large margin.

Pix2Fact: When Vision Is Not Enough -- Benchmarking Fine-Grained VQA with Web Verification on High-Resolution Real-World Scenes

Despite progress on general tasks, vision-language models (VLMs) still struggle with challenges that demand both fine-grained visual grounding and external knowledge, a synergy overlooked by existing benchmarks that evaluate these abilities in isolation. To fill this void, we introduce Pix2Fact, a visual question-answering benchmark designed to assess expert-level visual perception and knowledge search. Pix2Fact comprises 1,000 high-resolution (4K+) images spanning eight scenarios. Its questions and answers are meticulously crafted by PhD-holding annotators from top global universities across diverse disciplines. Each question requires detailed visual grounding and the integration of external knowledge. Evaluating ten state-of-the-art VLMs, including proprietary models such as Gemini-3.1-Pro and GPT-5.4, we find that Pix2Fact poses a formidable challenge: the most advanced model (Gemini-3.1-Pro) achieves only 51.7% average accuracy, even with access to visual ground truth and search tools. Our analysis attributes this low accuracy to three factors, frequent visual grounding errors even with visual ground truth, shallow search harnessing, and VLM's inability to retrieve long-tail, unstructured local information. This striking gap exposes the limitations of current models in assisting humans with real-world scenarios that demand overwhelming visual comprehension. We believe Pix2Fact will serve as a critical benchmark to drive the next generation of language-vision agents that seamlessly integrate fine-grained perception with robust knowledge search.

COMICS: End-to-end Bi-grained Contrastive Learning for Multi-face Forgery Detection

DeepFakes have raised serious societal concerns, leading to a great surge in detection-based forensics methods in recent years. Face forgery recognition is a standard detection method that usually follows a two-phase pipeline. While those methods perform well in ideal experimental environment, they face challenges when dealing with DeepFakes in the wild involving complex background and multiple faces of varying sizes. Moreover, most face forgery recognition methods can only process one face at a time. One straightforward way to address this issue is to simultaneous process multi-face by integrating face extraction and forgery detection in an end-to-end fashion by adapting advanced object detection architectures. However, as these object detection architectures are designed to capture the discriminative features of different object categories rather than the subtle forgery traces among the faces, the direct adaptation suffers from limited representation ability. In this paper, we propose COMICS, an end-to-end framework for multi-face forgery detection. COMICS integrates face extraction and forgery detection in a seamless manner and adapts to advanced object detection architectures. The proposed bi-grained contrastive learning approach explores face forgery traces at both the coarse- and fine-grained levels. Specifically, coarse-grained level contrastive learning captures the discriminative features among positive and negative proposal pairs at multiple layers produced by the proposal generator, and fine-grained level contrastive learning captures the pixel-wise discrepancy between the forged and original areas of the same face and the pixel-wise content inconsistency among different faces. Extensive experiments on the OpenForensics and FFIW datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms other counterparts and shows great potential for being integrated into various architectures.

Sampling Efficient Deep Reinforcement Learning through Preference-Guided Stochastic Exploration

Massive practical works addressed by Deep Q-network (DQN) algorithm have indicated that stochastic policy, despite its simplicity, is the most frequently used exploration approach. However, most existing stochastic exploration approaches either explore new actions heuristically regardless of Q-values or inevitably introduce bias into the learning process to couple the sampling with Q-values. In this paper, we propose a novel preference-guided $ε$-greedy exploration algorithm that can efficiently learn the action distribution in line with the landscape of Q-values for DQN without introducing additional bias. Specifically, we design a dual architecture consisting of two branches, one of which is a copy of DQN, namely the Q-branch. The other branch, which we call the preference branch, learns the action preference that the DQN implicit follows. We theoretically prove that the policy improvement theorem holds for the preference-guided $ε$-greedy policy and experimentally show that the inferred action preference distribution aligns with the landscape of corresponding Q-values. Consequently, preference-guided $ε$-greedy exploration motivates the DQN agent to take diverse actions, i.e., actions with larger Q-values can be sampled more frequently whereas actions with smaller Q-values still have a chance to be explored, thus encouraging the exploration. We assess the proposed method with four well-known DQN variants in nine different environments. Extensive results confirm the superiority of our proposed method in terms of performance and convergence speed. Semi-supervised Medical Image Segmentation via Query Distribution Consistency

Semi-supervised learning is increasingly popular in medical image segmentation due to its ability to leverage large amounts of unlabeled data to extract additional information. However, most existing semi-supervised segmentation methods focus only on extracting information from unlabeled data. In this paper, we propose a novel Dual KMax UX-Net framework that leverages labeled data to guide the extraction of information from unlabeled data. Our approach is based on a mutual learning strategy that incorporates two modules: 3D UX-Net as our backbone meta-architecture and KMax decoder to enhance the segmentation performance. Extensive experiments on the Atrial Segmentation Challenge dataset have shown that our method can significantly improve performance by merging unlabeled data. Meanwhile, our framework outperforms state-of-the-art semi-supervised learning methods on 10\% and 20\% labeled settings. Code located at: https://github.com/Rows21/DK-UXNet.

HierCat: Hierarchical Query Categorization from Weakly Supervised Data at Facebook Marketplace

Query categorization at customer-to-customer e-commerce platforms like Facebook Marketplace is challenging due to the vagueness of search intent, noise in real-world data, and imbalanced training data across languages. Its deployment also needs to consider challenges in scalability and downstream integration in order to translate modeling advances into better search result relevance. In this paper we present HierCat, the query categorization system at Facebook Marketplace. HierCat addresses these challenges by leveraging multi-task pre-training of dual-encoder architectures with a hierarchical inference step to effectively learn from weakly supervised training data mined from searcher engagement. We show that HierCat not only outperforms popular methods in offline experiments, but also leads to 1.4% improvement in NDCG and 4.3% increase in searcher engagement at Facebook Marketplace Search in online A/B testing.

Bootstrapping meaning through listening: Unsupervised learning of spoken sentence embeddings

Inducing semantic representations directly from speech signals is a highly challenging task but has many useful applications in speech mining and spoken language understanding. This study tackles the unsupervised learning of semantic representations for spoken utterances. Through converting speech signals into hidden units generated from acoustic unit discovery, we propose WavEmbed, a multimodal sequential autoencoder that predicts hidden units from a dense representation of speech. Secondly, we also propose S-HuBERT to induce meaning through knowledge distillation, in which a sentence embedding model is first trained on hidden units and passes its knowledge to a speech encoder through contrastive learning. The best performing model achieves a moderate correlation (0.5~0.6) with human judgments, without relying on any labels or transcriptions. Furthermore, these models can also be easily extended to leverage textual transcriptions of speech to learn much better speech embeddings that are strongly correlated with human annotations. Our proposed methods are applicable to the development of purely data-driven systems for speech mining, indexing and search.

MesonGS++: Post-training Compression of 3D Gaussian Splatting with Hyperparameter Searching

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) achieves high-quality novel view synthesis with real-time rendering, but its storage cost remains prohibitive for practical deployment. Existing post-training compression methods still rely on many coupled hyperparameters across pruning, transformation, quantization, and entropy coding, making it difficult to control the final compressed size and fully exploit the rate-distortion trade-off. We propose MesonGS++, a size-aware post-training codec for 3D Gaussian compression. On the codec side, MesonGS++ combines joint importance-based pruning, octree geometry coding, attribute transformation, selective vector quantization for higher-degree spherical harmonics, and group-wise mixed-precision quantization with entropy coding. On the configuration side, it treats the reserve ratio and bit-width allocation as the dominant rate-distortion knobs and jointly optimizes them under a target storage budget via discrete sampling and 0--1 integer linear programming. We further propose a linear size estimator and a CUDA parallel quantization operator to accelerate the hyperparameter searching process. Extensive experiments show that MesonGS++ achieves over 34$\times$ compression while preserving rendering fidelity, outperforming state-of-the-art post-training methods and accurately meeting target size budgets. Remarkably, without any training, MesonGS++ can even surpass the PSNR of vanilla 3DGS at a 20$\times$ compression rate on the Stump scene. A Hybrid Framework for Spatial Interpolation: Merging Data-driven with Domain Knowledge

Estimating spatially distributed information through the interpolation of scattered observation datasets often overlooks the critical role of domain knowledge in understanding spatial dependencies. Additionally, the features of these data sets are typically limited to the spatial coordinates of the scattered observation locations. In this paper, we propose a hybrid framework that integrates data-driven spatial dependency feature extraction with rule-assisted spatial dependency function mapping to augment domain knowledge. We demonstrate the superior performance of our framework in two comparative application scenarios, highlighting its ability to capture more localized spatial features in the reconstructed distribution fields. Furthermore, we underscore its potential to enhance nonlinear estimation capabilities through the application of transformed fuzzy rules and to quantify the inherent uncertainties associated with the observation data sets. Our framework introduces an innovative approach to spatial information estimation by synergistically combining observational data with rule-assisted domain knowledge.

Mamba Meets Scheduling: Learning to Solve Flexible Job Shop Scheduling with Efficient Sequence Modeling

The Flexible Job Shop Problem (FJSP) is a well-studied combinatorial optimization problem with extensive applications for manufacturing and production scheduling. It involves assigning jobs to various machines to optimize criteria, such as minimizing total completion time. Current learning-based methods in this domain often rely on localized feature extraction models, limiting their capacity to capture overarching dependencies spanning operations and machines. This paper introduces an innovative architecture that harnesses Mamba, a state-space model with linear computational complexity, to facilitate comprehensive sequence modeling tailored for FJSP. In contrast to prevalent graph-attention-based frameworks that are computationally intensive for FJSP, we show our model is more efficient. Specifically, the proposed model possesses an encoder and a decoder. The encoder incorporates a dual Mamba block to extract operation and machine features separately. Additionally, we introduce an efficient cross-attention decoder to learn interactive embeddings of operations and machines. Our experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves faster solving speed and surpasses the performance of state-of-the-art learning-based methods for FJSP across various benchmarks.

Deep Progressive Feature Aggregation Network for High Dynamic Range Imaging

High dynamic range (HDR) imaging is an important task in image processing that aims to generate well-exposed images in scenes with varying illumination. Although existing multi-exposure fusion methods have achieved impressive results, generating high-quality HDR images in dynamic scenes is still difficult. The primary challenges are ghosting artifacts caused by object motion between low dynamic range images and distorted content in under and overexposed regions. In this paper, we propose a deep progressive feature aggregation network for improving HDR imaging quality in dynamic scenes. To address the issues of object motion, our method implicitly samples high-correspondence features and aggregates them in a coarse-to-fine manner for alignment. In addition, our method adopts a densely connected network structure based on the discrete wavelet transform, which aims to decompose the input features into multiple frequency subbands and adaptively restore corrupted contents. Experiments show that our proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art performance under different scenes, compared to other promising HDR imaging methods. Specifically, the HDR images generated by our method contain cleaner and more detailed content, with fewer distortions, leading to better visual quality.

Decision-making with Speculative Opponent Models

Opponent modelling has proven effective in enhancing the decision-making of the controlled agent by constructing models of opponent agents. However, existing methods often rely on access to the observations and actions of opponents, a requirement that is infeasible when such information is either unobservable or challenging to obtain. To address this issue, we introduce Distributional Opponent-aided Multi-agent Actor-Critic (DOMAC), the first speculative opponent modelling algorithm that relies solely on local information (i.e., the controlled agent's observations, actions, and rewards). Specifically, the actor maintains a speculated belief about the opponents using the tailored speculative opponent models that predict the opponents' actions using only local information. Moreover, DOMAC features distributional critic models that estimate the return distribution of the actor's policy, yielding a more fine-grained assessment of the actor's quality. This thus more effectively guides the training of the speculative opponent models that the actor depends upon. Furthermore, we formally derive a policy gradient theorem with the proposed opponent models. Extensive experiments under eight different challenging multi-agent benchmark tasks within the MPE, Pommerman and StarCraft Multiagent Challenge (SMAC) demonstrate that our DOMAC successfully models opponents' behaviours and delivers superior performance against state-of-the-art methods with a faster convergence speed.

RFM-Pose:Reinforcement-Guided Flow Matching for Fast Category-Level 6D Pose Estimation

Object pose estimation is a fundamental problem in computer vision and plays a critical role in virtual reality and embodied intelligence, where agents must understand and interact with objects in 3D space. Recently, score based generative models have to some extent solved the rotational symmetry ambiguity problem in category level pose estimation, but their efficiency remains limited by the high sampling cost of score-based diffusion. In this work, we propose a new framework, RFM-Pose, that accelerates category-level 6D object pose generation while actively evaluating sampled hypotheses. To improve sampling efficiency, we adopt a flow-matching generative model and generate pose candidates along an optimal transport path from a simple prior to the pose distribution. To further refine these candidates, we cast the flow-matching sampling process as a Markov decision process and apply proximal policy optimization to fine-tune the sampling policy. In particular, we interpret the flow field as a learnable policy and map an estimator to a value network, enabling joint optimization of pose generation and hypothesis scoring within a reinforcement learning framework. Experiments on the REAL275 benchmark demonstrate that RFM-Pose achieves favorable performance while significantly reducing computational cost. Moreover, similar to prior work, our approach can be readily adapted to object pose tracking and attains competitive results in this setting.

Learning Topological Representations with Bidirectional Graph Attention Network for Solving Job Shop Scheduling Problem

Existing learning-based methods for solving job shop scheduling problems (JSSP) usually use off-the-shelf GNN models tailored to undirected graphs and neglect the rich and meaningful topological structures of disjunctive graphs (DGs). This paper proposes the topology-aware bidirectional graph attention network (TBGAT), a novel GNN architecture based on the attention mechanism, to embed the DG for solving JSSP in a local search framework. Specifically, TBGAT embeds the DG from a forward and a backward view, respectively, where the messages are propagated by following the different topologies of the views and aggregated via graph attention. Then, we propose a novel operator based on the message-passing mechanism to calculate the forward and backward topological sorts of the DG, which are the features for characterizing the topological structures and exploited by our model. In addition, we theoretically and experimentally show that TBGAT has linear computational complexity to the number of jobs and machines, respectively, strengthening our method's practical value. Besides, extensive experiments on five synthetic datasets and seven classic benchmarks show that TBGAT achieves new SOTA results by outperforming a wide range of neural methods by a large margin. Divide-and-Conquer Decoupled Network for Cross-Domain Few-Shot Segmentation

Cross-domain few-shot segmentation (CD-FSS) aims to tackle the dual challenge of recognizing novel classes and adapting to unseen domains with limited annotations. However, encoder features often entangle domain-relevant and category-relevant information, limiting both generalization and rapid adaptation to new domains. To address this issue, we propose a Divide-and-Conquer Decoupled Network (DCDNet). In the training stage, to tackle feature entanglement that impedes cross-domain generalization and rapid adaptation, we propose the Adversarial-Contrastive Feature Decomposition (ACFD) module. It decouples backbone features into category-relevant private and domain-relevant shared representations via contrastive learning and adversarial learning. Then, to mitigate the potential degradation caused by the disentanglement, the Matrix-Guided Dynamic Fusion (MGDF) module adaptively integrates base, shared, and private features under spatial guidance, maintaining structural coherence. In addition, in the fine-tuning stage, to enhanced model generalization, the Cross-Adaptive Modulation (CAM) module is placed before the MGDF, where shared features guide private features via modulation ensuring effective integration of domain-relevant information. Extensive experiments on four challenging datasets show that DCDNet outperforms existing CD-FSS methods, setting a new state-of-the-art for cross-domain generalization and few-shot adaptation.

CAGS: Color-Adaptive Volumetric Video Streaming with Dynamic 3D Gaussian Splatting

Volumetric video (VV) streaming enables real-time, immersive access to remote 3D environments, powering telepresence, ecological monitoring, and robotic teleoperation. These applications turn VV streaming into a real-time interface to remote physical environments, imposing new system-level demands for photorealistic scene representation, low-latency interaction, and robust performance under heterogeneous networks. 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has been widely used for real-time photorealistic rendering, offering superior visual quality and rendering performance, but it faces challenges due to bandwidth consumption. Furthermore, as the foundation of adaptive VV streaming, existing Levels of Detail (LoD) methods based on density are not well-suited to Gaussian representations, leading to visible gaps and severe quality degradation. Recent studies have also explored attribute compression techniques to reduce bandwidth consumption. Our preliminary studies reveal that aggressive attribute compression primarily causes color distortion, which can be effectively corrected in the rendered image using a reference image. Motivated by these findings, we propose a novel Color-Adaptive scheme for adaptive VV streaming that uses vector quantization (VQ) to establish LoDs and correct color distortions with low-resolution reference images. We further present CAGS, an adaptive VV streaming system compatible with diverse Gaussian representations, which integrates the Color-Adaptive scheme by rendering reference images on the streaming server and performing color restoration on the client. Extensive experiments on our prototype system demonstrate that CAGS outperforms the existing adaptive streaming systems in PSNR by 5$\sim$20 dB under fluctuating bandwidth, operates significantly faster than existing scalable Gaussian compression methods, and generalizes across different Gaussian representations.

Cognitively Layered Data Synthesis for Domain Adaptation of LLMs to Space Situational Awareness

Large language models (LLMs) demonstrate exceptional performance on general-purpose tasks. however, transferring them to complex engineering domains such as space situational awareness (SSA) remains challenging owing to insufficient structural alignment with mission chains, the absence of higher-order cognitive supervision, and poor correspondence between data quality criteria and engineering specifications. The core bottleneck is the construction of high-quality supervised fine-tuning (SFT) datasets. To this end, we propose BD-FDG (Bloom's Taxonomy-based Domain-specific Fine-tuning Data Generation), a framework that addresses incomplete knowledge coverage, shallow cognitive depth, and limited quality controllability through three mechanisms: structured knowledge organization, cognitively layered question modeling, and automated quality control. The framework uses a knowledge tree to ensure structured corpus coverage, designs a question generation scheme spanning nine categories and six cognitive levels from Remember to Create to produce samples with a continuous difficulty gradient, and applies a multidimensional scoring pipeline to enforce domain rigor and consistency. Using BD-FDG, we construct SSA-SFT, a domain dataset of approximately 230K samples, and fine-tune Qwen3-8B to obtain SSA-LLM-8B. Experiments show that SSA-LLM-8B achieves relative BLEU-1 improvements of 144\% (no-think) and 176\% (think) on the domain test set and a win rate of 82.21\% over the baseline in arena comparisons, while largely preserving general benchmark performance (MMLU-Pro, MATH-500). These results validate SFT data construction driven by cognitive layering as an effective paradigm for complex engineering domains and provide a transferable framework for domain-specific LLM adaptation.

Reasoning in a Combinatorial and Constrained World: Benchmarking LLMs on Natural-Language Combinatorial Optimization

While large language models (LLMs) have shown strong performance in math and logic reasoning, their ability to handle combinatorial optimization (CO) -- searching high-dimensional solution spaces under hard constraints -- remains underexplored. To bridge the gap, we introduce NLCO, a \textbf{N}atural \textbf{L}anguage \textbf{C}ombinatorial \textbf{O}ptimization benchmark that evaluates LLMs on end-to-end CO reasoning: given a language-described decision-making scenario, the model must output a discrete solution without writing code or calling external solvers. NLCO covers 43 CO problems and is organized using a four-layer taxonomy of variable types, constraint families, global patterns, and objective classes, enabling fine-grained evaluation. We provide solver-annotated solutions and comprehensively evaluate LLMs by feasibility, solution optimality, and reasoning efficiency. Experiments across a wide range of modern LLMs show that high-performing models achieve strong feasibility and solution quality on small instances, but both degrade as instance size grows, even if more tokens are used for reasoning. We also observe systematic effects across the taxonomy: set-based tasks are relatively easy, whereas graph-structured problems and bottleneck objectives lead to more frequent failures.

Phone-to-audio alignment without text: A Semi-supervised Approach

The task of phone-to-audio alignment has many applications in speech research. Here we introduce two Wav2Vec2-based models for both text-dependent and text-independent phone-to-audio alignment. The proposed Wav2Vec2-FS, a semi-supervised model, directly learns phone-to-audio alignment through contrastive learning and a forward sum loss, and can be coupled with a pretrained phone recognizer to achieve text-independent alignment. The other model, Wav2Vec2-FC, is a frame classification model trained on forced aligned labels that can both perform forced alignment and text-independent segmentation. Evaluation results suggest that both proposed methods, even when transcriptions are not available, generate highly close results to existing forced alignment tools. DeepFake-o-meter: An Open Platform for DeepFake Detection

In recent years, the advent of deep learning-based techniques and the significant reduction in the cost of computation resulted in the feasibility of creating realistic videos of human faces, commonly known as DeepFakes. The availability of open-source tools to create DeepFakes poses as a threat to the trustworthiness of the online media. In this work, we develop an open-source online platform, known as DeepFake-o-meter, that integrates state-of-the-art DeepFake detection methods and provide a convenient interface for the users. We describe the design and function of DeepFake-o-meter in this work.

Discovering Clinically Meaningful Shape Features for the Analysis of Tumor Pathology Images

With the advanced imaging technology, digital pathology imaging of tumor tissue slides is becoming a routine clinical procedure for cancer diagnosis. This process produces massive imaging data that capture histological details in high resolution. Recent developments in deep-learning methods have enabled us to automatically detect and characterize the tumor regions in pathology images at large scale. From each identified tumor region, we extracted 30 well-defined descriptors that quantify its shape, geometry, and topology. We demonstrated how those descriptor features were associated with patient survival outcome in lung adenocarcinoma patients from the National Lung Screening Trial (n=143). Besides, a descriptor-based prognostic model was developed and validated in an independent patient cohort from The Cancer Genome Atlas Program program (n=318). This study proposes new insights into the relationship between tumor shape, geometrical, and topological features and patient prognosis. Applying Feature Underspecified Lexicon Phonological Features in Multilingual Text-to-Speech

This study investigates whether the phonological features derived from the Featurally Underspecified Lexicon model can be applied in text-to-speech systems to generate native and non-native speech in English and Mandarin. We present a mapping of ARPABET/pinyin to SAMPA/SAMPA-SC and then to phonological features. This mapping was tested for whether it could lead to the successful generation of native, non-native, and code-switched speech in the two languages. We ran two experiments, one with a small dataset and one with a larger dataset. The results supported that phonological features could be used as a feasible input system for languages in or not in the train data, although further investigation is needed to improve model performance. The results lend support to FUL by presenting successfully synthesised output, and by having the output carrying a source-language accent when synthesising a language not in the training data. The TTS process stimulated human second language acquisition process and thus also confirm FUL's ability to account for acquisition.

ST-Prune: Training-Free Spatio-Temporal Token Pruning for Vision-Language Models in Autonomous Driving

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have become central to autonomous driving systems, yet their deployment is severely bottlenecked by the massive computational overhead of multi-view camera and multi-frame video input. Existing token pruning methods, primarily designed for single-image inputs, treat each frame or view in isolation and thus fail to exploit the inherent spatio-temporal redundancies in driving scenarios. To bridge this gap, we propose ST-Prune, a training-free, plug-and-play framework comprising two complementary modules: Motion-aware Temporal Pruning (MTP) and Ring-view Spatial Pruning (RSP). MTP addresses temporal redundancy by encoding motion volatility and temporal recency as soft constraints within the diversity selection objective, prioritizing dynamic trajectories and current-frame content over static historical background. RSP further resolves spatial redundancy by exploiting the ring-view camera geometry to penalize bilateral cross-view similarity, eliminating duplicate projections and residual background that temporal pruning alone cannot suppress. These two modules together constitute a complete spatio-temporal pruning process, preserving key scene information under strict compression. Validated across four benchmarks spanning perception, prediction, and planning, ST-Prune establishes new state-of-the-art for training-free token pruning. Notably, even at 90\% token reduction, ST-Prune achieves near-lossless performance with certain metrics surpassing the full-model baseline, while maintaining inference speeds comparable to existing pruning approaches.

Aligning Crowd Feedback via Distributional Preference Reward Modeling

Deep Reinforcement Learning is widely used for aligning Large Language Models (LLM) with human preference. However, the conventional reward modelling is predominantly dependent on human annotations provided by a select cohort of individuals. Such dependence may unintentionally result in skewed models that reflect the inclinations of these annotators, thereby failing to adequately represent the wider population's expectations. We propose the Distributional Preference Reward Model (DPRM), a simple yet effective framework to align large language models with diverse human preferences. To this end, we characterize multiple preferences by a categorical distribution and introduce a Bayesian updater to accommodate shifted or new preferences. On top of that, we design an optimal-transportation-based loss to calibrate DPRM to align with the preference distribution. Finally, the expected reward is utilized to fine-tune an LLM policy to generate responses favoured by the population. Our experiments show that DPRM significantly enhances the alignment of LLMs with population preference, yielding more accurate, unbiased, and contextually appropriate responses.

On-Board Vision-Language Models for Personalized Autonomous Vehicle Motion Control: System Design and Real-World Validation

Personalized driving refers to an autonomous vehicle's ability to adapt its driving behavior or control strategies to match individual users' preferences and driving styles while maintaining safety and comfort standards. However, existing works either fail to capture every individual preference precisely or become computationally inefficient as the user base expands. Vision-Language Models (VLMs) offer promising solutions to this front through their natural language understanding and scene reasoning capabilities. In this work, we propose a lightweight yet effective on-board VLM framework that provides low-latency personalized driving performance while maintaining strong reasoning capabilities. Our solution incorporates a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)-based memory module that enables continuous learning of individual driving preferences through human feedback. Through comprehensive real-world vehicle deployment and experiments, our system has demonstrated the ability to provide safe, comfortable, and personalized driving experiences across various scenarios and significantly reduce takeover rates by up to 76.9%. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first end-to-end VLM-based motion control system in real-world autonomous vehicles.

Adaptive Spatial-Temporal Graph Learning-Enabled Short-Term Voltage Stability Assessment against Time-Varying Topological Conditions

The emerging deep learning (DL) technology has recently exhibited great potential in data-driven short-term voltage stability (SVS) assessment of complex power grids. However, without sufficient attention to the time-varying topological structures of today's power grids, the majority of existing DL-based SVS assessment schemes could experience severe performance degradation in practice. To address this drawback, this paper proposes an adaptive spatial-temporal graph learning-enabled SVS assessment approach that can adapt well to various topological changes. First, considering the time-varying topological conditions of a given power grid, an adaptive graph representation matrix is automatically learned to effectively capture the complicated spatial correlations between individual buses within the grid. Then, to help better capture regional SVS features for subsequent learning processes, the adaptive graph representation matrix is properly adjusted by introducing a spatial attention mechanism. Further, with post-fault system trajectory data linked together via attention-based graph representation, a residual spatiotemporal graph convolutional network is carefully built with Optuna-based optimization to deeply mine system-wide spatiotemporal features and thus achieve structure-adaptive SVS assessment. Numerical test results on two representative sub-systems of a realistic provincial power grid in South China demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach under various changing topological conditions.

DiffAD: A Unified Diffusion Modeling Approach for Autonomous Driving

End-to-end autonomous driving (E2E-AD) has rapidly emerged as a promising approach toward achieving full autonomy. However, existing E2E-AD systems typically adopt a traditional multi-task framework, addressing perception, prediction, and planning tasks through separate task-specific heads. Despite being trained in a fully differentiable manner, they still encounter issues with task coordination, and the system complexity remains high. In this work, we introduce DiffAD, a novel diffusion probabilistic model that redefines autonomous driving as a conditional image generation task. By rasterizing heterogeneous targets onto a unified bird's-eye view (BEV) and modeling their latent distribution, DiffAD unifies various driving objectives and jointly optimizes all driving tasks in a single framework, significantly reducing system complexity and harmonizing task coordination. The reverse process iteratively refines the generated BEV image, resulting in more robust and realistic driving behaviors. Closed-loop evaluations in Carla demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method, achieving a new state-of-the-art Success Rate and Driving Score.

SCALM: Towards Semantic Caching for Automated Chat Services with Large Language Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) have become increasingly popular, transforming a wide range of applications across various domains. However, the real-world effectiveness of their query cache systems has not been thoroughly investigated. In this work, we for the first time conducted an analysis on real-world human-to-LLM interaction data, identifying key challenges in existing caching solutions for LLM-based chat services. Our findings reveal that current caching methods fail to leverage semantic connections, leading to inefficient cache performance and extra token costs. To address these issues, we propose SCALM, a new cache architecture that emphasizes semantic analysis and identifies significant cache entries and patterns. We also detail the implementations of the corresponding cache storage and eviction strategies. Our evaluations show that SCALM increases cache hit ratios and reduces operational costs for LLMChat services. Compared with other state-of-the-art solutions in GPTCache, SCALM shows, on average, a relative increase of 63% in cache hit ratio and a relative improvement of 77% in tokens savings.

Adaptive Tool Use in Large Language Models with Meta-Cognition Trigger

Large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable emergent capabilities, transforming the execution of functional tasks by leveraging external tools for complex problems that require specialized processing or up-to-date data. While existing research expands LLMs access to diverse tools (e.g., program interpreters, search engines, calculators), the necessity of using these tools is often overlooked, leading to indiscriminate tool invocation. This naive approach raises two key issues: increased latency due to unnecessary tool calls, and potential errors resulting from faulty interactions with external tools. In this paper, we introduce meta-cognition as a proxy for LLMs self-assessment of their capabilities, reflecting the model's awareness of its own limitations. Based on this, we propose MeCo, an adaptive decision-making strategy for external tool use. MeCo quantifies metacognitive scores by capturing high-level cognitive signals in the representation space, guiding when to invoke tools. Notably, MeCo is fine-tuning-free and incurs minimal cost. Experiments across multiple backbone models and benchmarks show that MeCo reliably detects LLMs' internal cognitive signals and significantly improves tool-use decision-making.

Evaluation of Infrastructure-based Warning System on Driving Behaviors-A Roundabout Study

Smart intersections have the potential to improve road safety with sensing, communication, and edge computing technologies. Perception sensors installed at a smart intersection can monitor the traffic environment in real time and send infrastructure-based warnings to nearby travelers through V2X communication. This paper investigated how infrastructure-based warnings can influence driving behaviors and improve roundabout safety through a driving-simulator study - a challenging driving scenario for human drivers. A co-simulation platform integrating Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) and Webots was developed to serve as the driving simulator. A real-world roundabout in Ann Arbor, Michigan was built in the co-simulation platform as the study area, and the merging scenarios were investigated. 36 participants were recruited and asked to navigate the roundabout under three danger levels (e.g., low, medium, high) and three collision warning designs (e.g., no warning, warning issued 1 second in advance, warning issued 2 seconds in advance). Results indicated that advanced warnings can significantly enhance safety by minimizing potential risks compared to scenarios without warnings. Earlier warnings enabled smoother driver responses and reduced abrupt decelerations. In addition, a personalized intention prediction model was developed to predict drivers' stop-or-go decisions when the warning is displayed. Among all tested machine learning models, the XGBoost model achieved the highest prediction accuracy with a precision rate of 95.56% and a recall rate of 97.73%.

Multi-view Content-aware Indexing for Long Document Retrieval

Long document question answering (DocQA) aims to answer questions from long documents over 10k words. They usually contain content structures such as sections, sub-sections, and paragraph demarcations. However, the indexing methods of long documents remain under-explored, while existing systems generally employ fixed-length chunking. As they do not consider content structures, the resultant chunks can exclude vital information or include irrelevant content. Motivated by this, we propose the Multi-view Content-aware indexing (MC-indexing) for more effective long DocQA via (i) segment structured document into content chunks, and (ii) represent each content chunk in raw-text, keywords, and summary views. We highlight that MC-indexing requires neither training nor fine-tuning. Having plug-and-play capability, it can be seamlessly integrated with any retrievers to boost their performance. Besides, we propose a long DocQA dataset that includes not only question-answer pair, but also document structure and answer scope. When compared to state-of-art chunking schemes, MC-indexing has significantly increased the recall by 42.8%, 30.0%, 23.9%, and 16.3% via top k= 1.5, 3, 5, and 10 respectively. These improved scores are the average of 8 widely used retrievers (2 sparse and 6 dense) via extensive experiments.

AIM 2025 Challenge on High FPS Motion Deblurring: Methods and Results

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the AIM 2025 High FPS Non-Uniform Motion Deblurring Challenge, highlighting the proposed solutions and final results. The objective of this challenge is to identify effective networks capable of producing clearer and visually compelling images in diverse and challenging conditions, by learning representative visual cues for complex aggregations of motion types. A total of 68 participants registered for the competition, and 9 teams ultimately submitted valid entries. This paper thoroughly evaluates the state-of-the-art advances in high-FPS single image motion deblurring, showcasing the significant progress in the field, while leveraging samples of the novel dataset, MIORe, that introduces challenging examples of movement patterns.

Frequency-Aware Guidance for Blind Image Restoration via Diffusion Models

Blind image restoration remains a significant challenge in low-level vision tasks. Recently, denoising diffusion models have shown remarkable performance in image synthesis. Guided diffusion models, leveraging the potent generative priors of pre-trained models along with a differential guidance loss, have achieved promising results in blind image restoration. However, these models typically consider data consistency solely in the spatial domain, often resulting in distorted image content. In this paper, we propose a novel frequency-aware guidance loss that can be integrated into various diffusion models in a plug-and-play manner. Our proposed guidance loss, based on 2D discrete wavelet transform, simultaneously enforces content consistency in both the spatial and frequency domains. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in three blind restoration tasks: blind image deblurring, imaging through turbulence, and blind restoration for multiple degradations. Notably, our method achieves a significant improvement in PSNR score, with a remarkable enhancement of 3.72\,dB in image deblurring. Moreover, our method exhibits superior capability in generating images with rich details and reduced distortion, leading to the best visual quality.

Emotion Diffusion Classifier with Adaptive Margin Discrepancy Training for Facial Expression Recognition

Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is essential for human-machine interaction, as it enables machines to interpret human emotions and internal states from facial affective behaviors. Although deep learning has significantly advanced FER performance, most existing deep-learning-based FER methods rely heavily on discriminative classifiers for fast predictions. These models tend to learn shortcuts and are vulnerable to even minor distribution shifts. To address this issue, we adopt a conditional generative diffusion model and introduce the Emotion Diffusion Classifier (EmoDC) for FER, which demonstrates enhanced adversarial robustness. However, retraining EmoDC using standard strategies fails to penalize incorrect categorical descriptions, leading to suboptimal recognition performance. To improve EmoDC, we propose margin-based discrepancy training, which encourages accurate predictions when conditioned on correct categorical descriptions and penalizes predictions conditioned on mismatched ones. This method enforces a minimum margin between noise-prediction errors for correct and incorrect categories, thereby enhancing the model's discriminative capability. Nevertheless, using a fixed margin fails to account for the varying difficulty of noise prediction across different images, limiting its effectiveness. To overcome this limitation, we propose Adaptive Margin Discrepancy Training (AMDiT), which dynamically adjusts the margin for each sample. Extensive experiments show that AMDiT significantly improves the accuracy of EmoDC over the Base model with standard denoising diffusion training on the RAF-DB basic subset, the RAF-DB compound subset, SFEW-2.0, and AffectNet, in 100-step evaluations. Additionally, EmoDC outperforms state-of-the-art discriminative classifiers in terms of robustness against noise and blur.

Every Activation Boosted: Scaling General Reasoner to 1 Trillion Open Language Foundation

We introduce Ling 2.0, a series reasoning-oriented language foundation built upon the principle that every activation boosts reasoning capability. Designed to scale from tens of billions to one trillion parameters under a unified Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) paradigm, Ling 2.0 emphasizes high sparsity, cross-scale consistency, and efficiency guided by empirical scaling laws. The series includes three non-thinking (instruct) models - Ling-mini-2.0, Ling-flash-2.0, and Ling-1T - ranging from 16B to 1T total parameters and achieving up to 7-fold active-compute efficiency compared with dense counterparts. Ling 2.0 integrates coordinated innovations across model architecture, pre-training, post-training, and infrastructure: a high-sparsity MoE with MTP for efficient reasoning, reasoning-oriented data and mid-training CoT activation, reinforcement-based fine-tuning (DFT, Evo-CoT), and full-scale FP8 training with fine-grained heterogeneous pipelines. At the trillion scale, Ling-1T establishes a new Pareto frontier of reasoning accuracy versus computational efficiency, demonstrating that sparse activation, when properly aligned with reasoning objectives, enables scalable and efficient intelligence. Collectively, Ling 2.0 provides a coherent, open, and efficient foundation for advancing future reasoning and thinking models, including the Ring series built upon the same base.

Lifelong Learner: Discovering Versatile Neural Solvers for Vehicle Routing Problems

Deep learning has been extensively explored to solve vehicle routing problems (VRPs), which yields a range of data-driven neural solvers with promising outcomes. However, most neural solvers are trained to tackle VRP instances in a relatively monotonous context, e.g., simplifying VRPs by using Euclidean distance between nodes and adhering to a single problem size, which harms their off-the-shelf application in different scenarios. To enhance their versatility, this paper presents a novel lifelong learning framework that incrementally trains a neural solver to manage VRPs in distinct contexts. Specifically, we propose a lifelong learner (LL), exploiting a Transformer network as the backbone, to solve a series of VRPs. The inter-context self-attention mechanism is proposed within LL to transfer the knowledge obtained from solving preceding VRPs into the succeeding ones. On top of that, we develop a dynamic context scheduler (DCS), employing the cross-context experience replay to further facilitate LL looking back on the attained policies of solving preceding VRPs. Extensive results on synthetic and benchmark instances (problem sizes up to 18k) show that our LL is capable of discovering effective policies for tackling generic VRPs in varying contexts, which outperforms other neural solvers and achieves the best performance for most VRPs.

RESCHED: Rethinking Flexible Job Shop Scheduling from a Transformer-based Architecture with Simplified States

Neural approaches to the Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP), particularly those based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), have gained growing attention in recent years. However, existing methods rely on complex feature-engineered state representations (i.e., often requiring more than 20 handcrafted features) and graph-biased neural architectures. To reduce modeling complexity and advance a more generalizable framework for FJSP, we introduce \textsc{ReSched}, a minimalist DRL framework that rethinks both the scheduling formulation and model design. First, by revisiting the Markov Decision Process (MDP) formulation of FJSP, we condense the state space to just four essential features, eliminating historical dependencies through a subproblem-based perspective. Second, we employ Transformer blocks with dot-product attention, augmented by three lightweight but effective architectural modifications tailored to scheduling tasks. Extensive experiments show that \textsc{ReSched} outperforms classical dispatching rules and state-of-the-art DRL methods on FJSP. Moreover, \textsc{ReSched} also generalizes well to the Job Shop Scheduling Problem (JSSP) and the Flexible Flow Shop Scheduling Problem (FFSP), achieving competitive performance against neural baselines specifically designed for these variants.

An Agentic Framework with LLMs for Solving Complex Vehicle Routing Problems

Complex vehicle routing problems (VRPs) remain a fundamental challenge, demanding substantial expert effort for intent interpretation and algorithm design. While large language models (LLMs) offer a promising path toward automation, current approaches still rely on external intervention, which restrict autonomy and often lead to execution errors and low solution feasibility. To address these challenges, we propose an Agentic Framework with LLMs (AFL) for solving complex vehicle routing problems, achieving full automation from problem instance to solution. AFL directly extracts knowledge from raw inputs and enables self-contained code generation without handcrafted modules or external solvers. To improve trustworthiness, AFL decomposes the overall pipeline into three manageable subtasks and employs four specialized agents whose coordinated interactions enforce cross-functional consistency and logical soundness. Extensive experiments on 60 complex VRPs, ranging from standard benchmarks to practical variants, validate the effectiveness and generality of our framework, showing comparable performance against meticulously designed algorithms. Notably, it substantially outperforms existing LLM-based baselines in both code reliability and solution feasibility, achieving rates close to 100% on the evaluated benchmarks.

Refining Hybrid Genetic Search for CVRP via Reinforcement Learning-Finetuned LLM

While large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used as automated heuristic designers for vehicle routing problems (VRPs), current state-of-the-art methods predominantly rely on prompting massive, general-purpose models like GPT-4. This work challenges that paradigm by demonstrating that a smaller, specialized LLM, when meticulously fine-tuned, can generate components that surpass expert-crafted heuristics within advanced solvers. We propose RFTHGS, a novel Reinforcement learning (RL) framework for Fine-Tuning a small LLM to generate high-performance crossover operators for the Hybrid Genetic Search (HGS) solver, applied to the Capacitated VRP (CVRP). Our method employs a multi-tiered, curriculum-based reward function that progressively guides the LLM to master generating first compilable, then executable, and finally, superior-performing operators that exceed human expert designs. This is coupled with an operator caching mechanism that discourages plagiarism and promotes diversity during training. Comprehensive experiments show that our fine-tuned LLM produces crossover operators which significantly outperform the expert-designed ones in HGS. The performance advantage remains consistent, generalizing from small-scale instances to large-scale problems with up to 1000 nodes. Furthermore, RFTHGS exceeds the performance of leading neuro-combinatorial baselines, prompt-based methods, and commercial LLMs such as GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini.

Adaptive Overclocking: Dynamic Control of Thinking Path Length via Real-Time Reasoning Signals

Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) often suffer from computational inefficiency due to overthinking, where a fixed reasoning budget fails to match the varying complexity of tasks. To address this issue, we propose Adaptive Overclocking, a method that makes the overclocking hyperparameter $α$ dynamic and context-aware. Our method adjusts reasoning speed in real time through two complementary signals: (1) token-level model uncertainty for fine-grained step-wise control, and (2) input complexity estimation for informed initialization. We implement this approach with three strategies: Uncertainty-Aware Alpha Scheduling (UA-$α$S), Complexity-Guided Alpha Initialization (CG-$α$I), and a Hybrid Adaptive Control (HAC) that combines both. Experiments on GSM8K, MATH, and SVAMP show that HAC achieves superior accuracy-latency trade-offs, reducing unnecessary computation on simple problems while allocating more resources to challenging ones. By mitigating overthinking, Adaptive Overclocking enhances both efficiency and overall reasoning performance.

The Interpretability Analysis of the Model Can Bring Improvements to the Text-to-SQL Task

To elevate the foundational capabilities and generalization prowess of the text-to-SQL model in real-world applications, we integrate model interpretability analysis with execution-guided strategy for semantic parsing of WHERE clauses in SQL queries. Furthermore, we augment this approach with filtering adjustments, logical correlation refinements, and model fusion, culminating in the design of the CESQL model that facilitates conditional enhancement. Our model excels on the WikiSQL dataset, which is emblematic of single-table database query tasks, markedly boosting the accuracy of prediction outcomes. When predicting conditional values in WHERE clauses, we have not only minimized our dependence on data within the condition columns of tables but also circumvented the impact of manually labeled training data. Our hope is that this endeavor to enhance accuracy in processing basic database queries will offer fresh perspectives for research into handling complex queries and scenarios featuring irregular data in real-world database environments.

Graph Neural Networks for Job Shop Scheduling Problems: A Survey

Job shop scheduling problems (JSSPs) represent a critical and challenging class of combinatorial optimization problems. Recent years have witnessed a rapid increase in the application of graph neural networks (GNNs) to solve JSSPs, albeit lacking a systematic survey of the relevant literature. This paper aims to thoroughly review prevailing GNN methods for different types of JSSPs and the closely related flow-shop scheduling problems (FSPs), especially those leveraging deep reinforcement learning (DRL). We begin by presenting the graph representations of various JSSPs, followed by an introduction to the most commonly used GNN architectures. We then review current GNN-based methods for each problem type, highlighting key technical elements such as graph representations, GNN architectures, GNN tasks, and training algorithms. Finally, we summarize and analyze the advantages and limitations of GNNs in solving JSSPs and provide potential future research opportunities. We hope this survey can motivate and inspire innovative approaches for more powerful GNN-based approaches in tackling JSSPs and other scheduling problems.

Geometric Distortion Guided Transformer for Omnidirectional Image Super-Resolution

As virtual and augmented reality applications gain popularity, omnidirectional image (ODI) super-resolution has become increasingly important. Unlike 2D plain images that are formed on a plane, ODIs are projected onto spherical surfaces. Applying established image super-resolution methods to ODIs, therefore, requires performing equirectangular projection (ERP) to map the ODIs onto a plane. ODI super-resolution needs to take into account geometric distortion resulting from ERP. However, without considering such geometric distortion of ERP images, previous deep-learning-based methods only utilize a limited range of pixels and may easily miss self-similar textures for reconstruction. In this paper, we introduce a novel Geometric Distortion Guided Transformer for Omnidirectional image Super-Resolution (GDGT-OSR). Specifically, a distortion modulated rectangle-window self-attention mechanism, integrated with deformable self-attention, is proposed to better perceive the distortion and thus involve more self-similar textures. Distortion modulation is achieved through a newly devised distortion guidance generator that produces guidance by exploiting the variability of distortion across latitudes. Furthermore, we propose a dynamic feature aggregation scheme to adaptively fuse the features from different self-attention modules. We present extensive experimental results on public datasets and show that the new GDGT-OSR outperforms methods in existing literature.

Spherical Convolution empowered FoV Prediction in 360-degree Video Multicast with Limited FoV Feedback

Field of view (FoV) prediction is critical in 360-degree video multicast, which is a key component of the emerging Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications. Most of the current prediction methods combining saliency detection and FoV information neither take into account that the distortion of projected 360-degree videos can invalidate the weight sharing of traditional convolutional networks, nor do they adequately consider the difficulty of obtaining complete multi-user FoV information, which degrades the prediction performance. This paper proposes a spherical convolution-empowered FoV prediction method, which is a multi-source prediction framework combining salient features extracted from 360-degree video with limited FoV feedback information. A spherical convolution neural network (CNN) is used instead of a traditional two-dimensional CNN to eliminate the problem of weight sharing failure caused by video projection distortion. Specifically, salient spatial-temporal features are extracted through a spherical convolution-based saliency detection model, after which the limited feedback FoV information is represented as a time-series model based on a spherical convolution-empowered gated recurrent unit network. Finally, the extracted salient video features are combined to predict future user FoVs. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is better than other prediction methods.

Applying Phonological Features in Multilingual Text-To-Speech

This study investigates whether phonological features can be applied in text-to-speech systems to generate native and non-native speech in English and Mandarin. We present a mapping of ARPABET/pinyin to SAMPA/SAMPA-SC and then to phonological features. We tested whether this mapping could lead to the successful generation of native, non-native, and code-switched speech in the two languages. We ran two experiments, one with a small dataset and one with a larger dataset. The results proved that phonological features could be used as a feasible input system, although further investigation is needed to improve model performance. The accented output generated by the TTS models also helps with understanding human second language acquisition processes.

Synchronising speech segments with musical beats in Mandarin and English singing

Generating synthesised singing voice with models trained on speech data has many advantages due to the models' flexibility and controllability. However, since the information about the temporal relationship between segments and beats are lacking in speech training data, the synthesised singing may sound off-beat at times. Therefore, the availability of the information on the temporal relationship between speech segments and music beats is crucial. The current study investigated the segment-beat synchronisation in singing data, with hypotheses formed based on the linguistics theories of P-centre and sonority hierarchy. A Mandarin corpus and an English corpus of professional singing data were manually annotated and analysed. The results showed that the presence of musical beats was more dependent on segment duration than sonority. However, the sonority hierarchy and the P-centre theory were highly related to the location of beats. Mandarin and English demonstrated cross-linguistic variations despite exhibiting common patterns.
