Adversarial attacks on an optical neural networkShuming Jiao, Ziwei Song, Shuiying Xiang
Adversarial attacks have been extensively investigated for machine learning systems including deep learning in the digital domain. However, the adversarial attacks on optical neural networks (ONN) have been seldom considered previously. In this work, we first construct an accurate image classifier with an ONN using a mesh of interconnected Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI). Then a corresponding adversarial attack scheme is proposed for the first time. The attacked images are visually very similar to the original ones but the ONN system becomes malfunctioned and generates wrong classification results in most time. The results indicate that adversarial attack is also a significant issue for optical machine learning systems.

Solving combinational optimization problems with evolutionary single-pixel imagingWei Huang, Jiaxiang Li, Shuming Jiao et al.
Single-pixel imaging (SPI) is a novel optical imaging technique by replacing the pixelated sensor array in a conventional camera with a single-pixel detector. In previous works, SPI is usually used for capturing object images or performing image processing tasks. In this work, we propose a SPI scheme for processing other types of data in addition to images. An Ising machine model is implemented optically with SPI for solving combinational optimization problems including number partition and graph maximum cut. Simulated and experimental results show that our proposed scheme can optimize the Hamiltonian function with evolutionary illumination patterns.

Playing Tic-Tac-Toe Games with Intelligent Single-pixel ImagingShuming Jiao, Jiaxiang Li, Wei Huang et al.
Single-pixel imaging (SPI) is a novel optical imaging technique by replacing a two-dimensional pixelated sensor with a single-pixel detector and pattern illuminations. SPI have been extensively used for various tasks related to image acquisition and processing. In this work, a novel non-image-based task of playing Tic-Tac-Toe games interactively is merged into the framework of SPI. An optoelectronic artificial intelligent (AI) player with minimal digital computation can detect the game states, generate optimal moves and display output results mainly by pattern illumination and single-pixel detection. Simulated and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of proposed scheme and its unbeatable performance against human players.

Polarized deep diffractive neural network for classification, generation, multiplexing and de-multiplexing of orbital angular momentum modesJiaqi Zhang, Zhiyuan Ye, Jianhua Yin et al.
The multiplexing and de-multiplexing of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams are critical issues in optical communication. Optical diffractive neural networks have been introduced to perform classification, generation, multiplexing and de-multiplexing of OAM beams. However, conventional diffractive neural networks cannot handle OAM modes with a varying spatial distribution of polarization directions. Herein, we propose a polarized optical deep diffractive neural network that is designed based on the concept of rectangular micro-structure meta-material. Our proposed polarized optical diffractive neural network is trained to classify, generate, multiplex and de-multiplex polarized OAM beams. The simulation results show that our network framework can successfully classify 14 kinds of orthogonally polarized vortex beams and de-multiplex the hybrid OAM beams into Gauss beams at two, three and four spatial positions respectively. 6 polarized OAM beams with identical total intensity and 8 cylinder vector beams with different topology charges also have been classified effectively. Additionally, results reveal that the network can generate hybrid OAM beams with high quality and multiplex two polarized linear beams into 8 kinds of cylinder vector beams.

Visual cryptography in single-pixel imagingShuming Jiao, Jun Feng, Yang Gao et al.
Two novel visual cryptography (VC) schemes are proposed by combining VC with single-pixel imaging (SPI) for the first time. It is pointed out that the overlapping of visual key images in VC is similar to the superposition of pixel intensities by a single-pixel detector in SPI. In the first scheme, QR-code VC is designed by using opaque sheets instead of transparent sheets. The secret image can be recovered when identical illumination patterns are projected onto multiple visual key images and a single detector is used to record the total light intensities. In the second scheme, the secret image is shared by multiple illumination pattern sequences and it can be recovered when the visual key patterns are projected onto identical items. The application of VC can be extended to more diversified scenarios by our proposed schemes.

Does deep learning always outperform simple linear regression in optical imaging?Shuming Jiao, Yang Gao, Jun Feng et al.
Deep learning has been extensively applied in many optical imaging applications in recent years. Despite the success, the limitations and drawbacks of deep learning in optical imaging have been seldom investigated. In this work, we show that conventional linear-regression-based methods can outperform the previously proposed deep learning approaches for two black-box optical imaging problems in some extent. Deep learning demonstrates its weakness especially when the number of training samples is small. The advantages and disadvantages of linear-regression-based methods and deep learning are analyzed and compared. Since many optical systems are essentially linear, a deep learning network containing many nonlinearity functions sometimes may not be the most suitable option.

Data hiding in complex-amplitude modulation using a digital micromirror deviceShuming Jiao, Dongfang Zhang, Chonglei Zhang et al.
A digital micromirror device (DMD) is an amplitude-type spatial light modulator. However, a complex-amplitude light modulation with a DMD can be achieved using the superpixel scheme. In the superpixel scheme, we notice that multiple different DMD local block patterns may correspond to the same complex superpixel value. Based on this inherent encoding redundancy, a large amount of external data can be embedded into the DMD pattern without extra cost. Meanwhile, the original complex light field information carried by the DMD pattern is fully preserved. This proposed scheme is favorable for applications such as secure information transmission and copyright protection.

Known-plaintext attack and ciphertext-only attack for encrypted single-pixel imagingShuming Jiao, Yang Gao, Ting Lei et al.
In many previous works, a single-pixel imaging (SPI) system is constructed as an optical image encryption system. Unauthorized users are not able to reconstruct the plaintext image from the ciphertext intensity sequence without knowing the illumination pattern key. However, little cryptanalysis about encrypted SPI has been investigated in the past. In this work, we propose a known-plaintext attack scheme and a ciphertext-only attack scheme to an encrypted SPI system for the first time. The known-plaintext attack is implemented by interchanging the roles of illumination patterns and object images in the SPI model. The ciphertext-only attack is implemented based on the statistical features of single-pixel intensity values. The two schemes can crack encrypted SPI systems and successfully recover the key containing correct illumination patterns.

Optical machine learning with incoherent light and a single-pixel detectorShuming Jiao, Jun Feng, Yang Gao et al.
An optical diffractive neural network (DNN) can be implemented with a cascaded phase mask architecture. Like an optical computer, the system can perform machine learning tasks such as number digit recognition in an all-optical manner. However, the system can only work under coherent light illumination and the precision requirement in practical experiments is quite high. This paper proposes an optical machine learning framework based on single-pixel imaging (MLSPI). The MLSPI system can perform the same linear pattern recognition task as DNN. Furthermore, it can work under incoherent lighting conditions, has lower experimental complexity and can be easily programmable.

Multiple-image encryption and hiding with an optical diffractive neural networkYang Gao, Shuming Jiao, Juncheng Fang et al.
A cascaded phase-only mask architecture (or an optical diffractive neural network) can be employed for different optical information processing tasks such as pattern recognition, orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode conversion, image salience detection and image encryption. However, for optical encryption and watermarking applications, such a system usually cannot process multiple pairs of input images and output images simultaneously. In our proposed scheme, multiple input images can be simultaneously fed to an optical diffractive neural network (DNN) system and each corresponding output image will be displayed in a non-overlap sub-region in the output imaging plane. Each input image undergoes a different optical transform in an independent channel within the same system. The multiple cascaded phase masks in the system can be effectively optimized by a wavefront matching algorithm. Similar to recent optical pattern recognition and mode conversion works, the orthogonality property is employed to design a multiplexed DNN.

Compression of phase-only holograms with JPEG standard and deep learningShuming Jiao, Zhi Jin, Chenliang Chang et al.
It is a critical issue to reduce the enormous amount of data in the processing, storage and transmission of a hologram in digital format. In photograph compression, the JPEG standard is commonly supported by almost every system and device. It will be favorable if JPEG standard is applicable to hologram compression, with advantages of universal compatibility. However, the reconstructed image from a JPEG compressed hologram suffers from severe quality degradation since some high frequency features in the hologram will be lost during the compression process. In this work, we employ a deep convolutional neural network to reduce the artifacts in a JPEG compressed hologram. Simulation and experimental results reveal that our proposed "JPEG + deep learning" hologram compression scheme can achieve satisfactory reconstruction results for a computer-generated phase-only hologram after compression.

Design of optimal illumination patterns in single-pixel imaging using image dictionariesJun Feng, Shuming Jiao, Yang Gao et al.
Single-pixel imaging (SPI) has a major drawback that many sequential illuminations are required for capturing one single image with long acquisition time. Basis illumination patterns such as Fourier patterns and Hadamard patterns can achieve much better imaging efficiency than random patterns. But the performance is still sub-optimal since the basis patterns are fixed and non-adaptive for varying object images. This Letter proposes a novel scheme for designing and optimizing the illumination patterns adaptively from an image dictionary by extracting the common image features using principal component analysis (PCA). Simulation and experimental results reveal that our proposed scheme outperforms conventional Fourier SPI in terms of imaging efficiency.

Fast Object Classification in Single-pixel ImagingShuming Jiao
In single-pixel imaging (SPI), the target object is illuminated with varying patterns sequentially and an intensity sequence is recorded by a single-pixel detector without spatial resolution. A high quality object image can only be computationally reconstructed after a large number of illuminations, with disadvantages of long imaging time and high cost. Conventionally, object classification is performed after a reconstructed object image with good fidelity is available. In this paper, we propose to classify the target object with a small number of illuminations in a fast manner for Fourier SPI. A naive Bayes classifier is employed to classify the target objects based on the single-pixel intensity sequence without any image reconstruction and each sequence element is regarded as an object feature in the classifier. Simulation results demonstrate our proposed scheme can classify the number digit object images with high accuracy (e.g. 80% accuracy using only 13 illuminations, at a sampling ratio of 0.3%).

Information security is a critical issue in modern society and image watermarking can effectively prevent unauthorized information access. Optical image watermarking techniques generally have advantages of parallel high-speed processing and multi-dimensional capabilities compared with digital approaches. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the research works related to optical image hiding and watermarking techniques conducted in the past decade. The past research works are focused on two major aspects, various optical systems for image hiding and the methods for embedding optical system output into a host image. A summary of the state-of-the-art works is made from these two perspectives.
