A Constant-Factor Approximation for Continuous Dynamic Time Warping in 2D

Continuous Dynamic Time Warping (CDTW) is a robust similarity measure for polygonal curves that has recently found a variety of applications. Despite its practical use, not much is known about the algorithmic complexity of computing it in 2D, especially when one requires either an exact solution or strong approximation guarantees. We fill this gap by introducing a $5$-approximation algorithm with running time $O(n^5)$ under the 1-norm. This is the first constant-factor approximation for 2D CDTW with polynomial running time. We extend our algorithm to all polygonal norms on $\mathbb{R}^2$, which we subsequently use in order to achieve a $(5+\varepsilon)$-approximation with time complexity $O(n^5 / \varepsilon^{1/2})$ for CDTW in 2D under any fixed norm. The latter result in particular includes the usual Euclidean 2-norm.

On Cyclic Solutions to the Min-Max Latency Multi-Robot Patrolling Problem

We consider the following surveillance problem: Given a set $P$ of $n$ sites in a metric space and a set of $k$ robots with the same maximum speed, compute a patrol schedule of minimum latency for the robots. Here a patrol schedule specifies for each robot an infinite sequence of sites to visit (in the given order) and the latency $L$ of a schedule is the maximum latency of any site, where the latency of a site $s$ is the supremum of the lengths of the time intervals between consecutive visits to $s$. When $k=1$ the problem is equivalent to the travelling salesman problem (TSP) and thus it is NP-hard. We have two main results. We consider cyclic solutions in which the set of sites must be partitioned into $\ell$ groups, for some~$\ell \leq k$, and each group is assigned a subset of the robots that move along the travelling salesman tour of the group at equal distance from each other. Our first main result is that approximating the optimal latency of the class of cyclic solutions can be reduced to approximating the optimal travelling salesman tour on some input, with only a $1+\varepsilon$ factor loss in the approximation factor and an $O\left(\left( k/\varepsilon \right)^k\right)$ factor loss in the runtime, for any $\varepsilon >0$. Our second main result shows that an optimal cyclic solution is a $2(1-1/k)$-approximation of the overall optimal solution. Note that for $k=2$ this implies that an optimal cyclic solution is optimal overall. The results have a number of consequences. For the Euclidean version of the problem, for instance, combining our results with known results on Euclidean TSP, yields a PTAS for approximating an optimal cyclic solution, and it yields a $(2(1-1/k)+\varepsilon)$-approximation of the optimal unrestricted solution. If the conjecture mentioned above is true, then our algorithm is actually a PTAS for the general problem in the Euclidean setting.

Fundamentals of Computing Continuous Dynamic Time Warping in 2D under Different Norms

Continuous Dynamic Time Warping (CDTW) measures the similarity of polygonal curves robustly to outliers and to sampling rates, but the design and analysis of CDTW algorithms face multiple challenges. We show that CDTW cannot be computed exactly under the Euclidean 2-norm using only algebraic operations, and we give an exact algorithm for CDTW under norms approximating the 2-norm. The latter result relies on technical fundamentals that we establish, and which generalise to any norm and to related measures such as the partial Fréchet similarity.

Computing Planar Convex Hulls with a Promise

Computing the convex hull of a planar $n$-point set $P$ is one of the most fundamental problems in computational geometry. It has an $Ω(n \log n)$ lower bound in the algebraic computation tree model, and many convex hull algorithms match this bound. Classical results show that, under special input assumptions, sub-$O(n \log n)$ algorithms are possible. For instance, when the points are given in lexicographic or angular order, the convex hull can be computed in linear time. Even under the weaker assumption that the sequence of points corresponds to the ordered vertices of a simple polygonal chain, linear-time algorithms exist. This naturally raises the question: can the convex hull of a point set be computed in sub-$O(n \log n)$ time under weaker input assumptions? We answer this positively. Under the promise that the input sequence contains the convex hull as a subsequence, we give a deterministic $O(n \sqrt{\log n})$-time algorithm to compute the convex hull of $P$. With randomisation, we achieve expected running time $O(n \log^{\varepsilon} n)$ for any constant $\varepsilon > 0$. We find this surprising, as points not on the convex hull may behave adversarially toward our convex hull construction algorithm. Yet the promise that \emph{only} the hull points are sorted suffices for $o(n \log n)$-time algorithms. Finally, we show that this promise is tight: if it is even slightly broken, i.e., allowing just one hull point to appear out of order, we prove an adversarial $Ω(n \log n)$-time lower bound. Consequently, the promise cannot be verified with fewer than $Ω(n \log n)$ comparisons. This also negatively resolves an open problem of Löffler and Raichel, who conjectured sub-$O(n \log n)$-time algorithms for computing the convex hull of a supersequence containing the hull as a subsequence.

Smallest Enclosing Disk Queries Using Farthest-Point Voronoi Diagrams

Let $S$ be a set of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Our goal is to preprocess $S$ to efficiently compute the smallest enclosing disk of the points in $S$ that lie inside an axis-aligned query rectangle. Previous data structures for this problem achieve a query time of $O(\log^6 n)$ with $O(n \log^2 n)$ preprocessing time and space by lifting the points to 3D, dualizing them into polyhedra, and searching through their intersections. We present a significantly simpler approach, solely based on 2D geometric structures, specifically 2D farthest-point Voronoi diagrams. Our approach achieves a deterministic query time of $O(\log^4 n)$ and, via randomization, an expected query time of $O(\log^{5/2} n \log\log n)$ with the same preprocessing bounds.

(k, l)-Medians Clustering of Trajectories Using Continuous Dynamic Time Warping

Due to the massively increasing amount of available geospatial data and the need to present it in an understandable way, clustering this data is more important than ever. As clusters might contain a large number of objects, having a representative for each cluster significantly facilitates understanding a clustering. Clustering methods relying on such representatives are called center-based. In this work we consider the problem of center-based clustering of trajectories. In this setting, the representative of a cluster is again a trajectory. To obtain a compact representation of the clusters and to avoid overfitting, we restrict the complexity of the representative trajectories by a parameter l. This restriction, however, makes discrete distance measures like dynamic time warping (DTW) less suited. There is recent work on center-based clustering of trajectories with a continuous distance measure, namely, the Fréchet distance. While the Fréchet distance allows for restriction of the center complexity, it can also be sensitive to outliers, whereas averaging-type distance measures, like DTW, are less so. To obtain a trajectory clustering algorithm that allows restricting center complexity and is more robust to outliers, we propose the usage of a continuous version of DTW as distance measure, which we call continuous dynamic time warping (CDTW). Our contribution is twofold: 1. To combat the lack of practical algorithms for CDTW, we develop an approximation algorithm that computes it. 2. We develop the first clustering algorithm under this distance measure and show a practical way to compute a center from a set of trajectories and subsequently iteratively improve it. To obtain insights into the results of clustering under CDTW on practical data, we conduct extensive experiments.

Approximation Algorithms for Multi-Robot Patrol-Scheduling with Min-Max Latency

We consider the problem of finding patrol schedules for $k$ robots to visit a given set of $n$ sites in a metric space. Each robot has the same maximum speed and the goal is to minimize the weighted maximum latency of any site, where the latency of a site is defined as the maximum time duration between consecutive visits of that site. The problem is NP-hard, as it has the traveling salesman problem as a special case (when $k=1$ and all sites have the same weight). We present a polynomial-time algorithm with an approximation factor of $O(k^2 \log \frac{w_{\max}}{w_{\min}})$ to the optimal solution, where $w_{\max}$ and $w_{\min}$ are the maximum and minimum weight of the sites respectively. Further, we consider the special case where the sites are in 1D. When all sites have the same weight, we present a polynomial-time algorithm to solve the problem exactly. If the sites may have different weights, we present a $12$-approximate solution, which runs in polynomial time when the number of robots, $k$, is a constant.

Approximating $(k,\ell)$-center clustering for curves

The Euclidean $k$-center problem is a classical problem that has been extensively studied in computer science. Given a set $\mathcal{G}$ of $n$ points in Euclidean space, the problem is to determine a set $\mathcal{C}$ of $k$ centers (not necessarily part of $\mathcal{G}$) such that the maximum distance between a point in $\mathcal{G}$ and its nearest neighbor in $\mathcal{C}$ is minimized. In this paper we study the corresponding $(k,\ell)$-center problem for polygonal curves under the Fréchet distance, that is, given a set $\mathcal{G}$ of $n$ polygonal curves in $\mathbb{R}^d$, each of complexity $m$, determine a set $\mathcal{C}$ of $k$ polygonal curves in $\mathbb{R}^d$, each of complexity $\ell$, such that the maximum Fréchet distance of a curve in $\mathcal{G}$ to its closest curve in $\mathcal{C}$ is minimized. In this paper, we substantially extend and improve the known approximation bounds for curves in dimension $2$ and higher. We show that, if $\ell$ is part of the input, then there is no polynomial-time approximation scheme unless $\mathsf{P}=\mathsf{NP}$. Our constructions yield different bounds for one and two-dimensional curves and the discrete and continuous Fréchet distance. In the case of the discrete Fréchet distance on two-dimensional curves, we show hardness of approximation within a factor close to $2.598$. This result also holds when $k=1$, and the $\mathsf{NP}$-hardness extends to the case that $\ell=\infty$, i.e., for the problem of computing the minimum-enclosing ball under the Fréchet distance. Finally, we observe that a careful adaptation of Gonzalez' algorithm in combination with a curve simplification yields a $3$-approximation in any dimension, provided that an optimal simplification can be computed exactly. We conclude that our approximation bounds are close to being tight.
