UAV Trajectory Planning for AoI-Minimal Data Collection in UAV-Aided IoT Networks by TransformerBotao Zhu, Ebrahim Bedeer, Ha H. Nguyen et al.
Maintaining freshness of data collection in Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks has attracted increasing attention. By taking into account age-of-information (AoI), we investigate the trajectory planning problem of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that is used to aid a cluster-based IoT network. An optimization problem is formulated to minimize the total AoI of the collected data by the UAV from the ground IoT network. Since the total AoI of the IoT network depends on the flight time of the UAV and the data collection time at hovering points, we jointly optimize the selection of hovering points and the visiting order to these points. We exploit the state-of-the-art transformer and the weighted A*, which is a path search algorithm, to design a machine learning algorithm to solve the formulated problem. The whole UAV-IoT system is fed into the encoder network of the proposed algorithm, and the algorithm's decoder network outputs the visiting order to ground clusters. Then, the weighted A* is used to find the hovering point for each cluster in the ground IoT network. Simulation results show that the trained model by the proposed algorithm has a good generalization ability to generate solutions for IoT networks with different numbers of ground clusters, without the need to retrain the model. Furthermore, results show that our proposed algorithm can find better UAV trajectories with the minimum total AoI when compared to other algorithms.

Energy-Efficient and Real-Time Sensing for Federated Continual Learning via Sample-Driven ControlMinh Ngoc Luu, Minh-Duong Nguyen, Ebrahim Bedeer et al.
An intelligent Real-Time Sensing (RTS) system must continuously acquire, update, integrate, and apply knowledge to adapt to real-world dynamics. Managing distributed intelligence in this context requires Federated Continual Learning (FCL). However, effectively capturing the diverse characteristics of RTS data in FCL systems poses significant challenges, including severely impacting computational and communication resources, escalating energy costs, and ultimately degrading overall system performance. To overcome these challenges, we investigate how the data distribution shift from ideal to practical RTS scenarios affects Artificial Intelligence (AI) model performance by leveraging the \textit{generalization gap} concept. In this way, we can analyze how sampling time in RTS correlates with the decline in AI performance, computation cost, and communication efficiency. Based on this observation, we develop a novel Sample-driven Control for Federated Continual Learning (SCFL) technique, specifically designed for mobile edge networks with RTS capabilities. In particular, SCFL is an optimization problem that harnesses the sampling process to concurrently minimize the generalization gap and improve overall accuracy while upholding the energy efficiency of the FCL framework. To solve the highly complex and time-varying optimization problem, we introduce a new soft actor-critic algorithm with explicit and implicit constraints (A2C-EI). Our empirical experiments reveal that we can achieve higher efficiency compared to other DRL baselines. Notably, SCFL can significantly reduce energy consumption up to $85\%$ while maintaining FL convergence and timely data transmission.

Deep Learning-based List Sphere Decoding for Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) Signaling DetectionSina Abbasi, Ebrahim Bedeer
Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling is a candidate non-orthonormal transmission technique to improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of future communication systems. However, such improvements of the SE are at the cost of additional computational complexity to remove the intentionally introduced intersymbol interference. In this paper, we investigate the use of deep learning (DL) to reduce the detection complexity of FTN signaling. To eliminate the need of having a noise whitening filter at the receiver, we first present an equivalent FTN signaling model based on using a set of orthonormal basis functions and identify its operation region. Second, we propose a DL-based list sphere decoding (DL-LSD) algorithm that selects and updates the initial radius of the original LSD to guarantee a pre-defined number $N_{\text{L}}$ of lattice points inside the hypersphere. This is achieved by training a neural network to output an approximate initial radius that includes $N_{\text{L}}$ lattice points. At the testing phase, if the hypersphere has more than $N_{\text{L}}$ lattice points, we keep the $N_{\text{L}}$ closest points to the point corresponding to the received FTN signal; however, if the hypersphere has less than $N_{\text{L}}$ points, we increase the approximate initial radius by a value that depends on the standard deviation of the distribution of the output radii from the training phase. Then, the approximate value of the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) is calculated based on the obtained $N_{\text{L}}$ points. Simulation results show that the computational complexity of the proposed DL-LSD is lower than its counterpart of the original LSD by orders of magnitude.

Low Complexity Classification Approach for Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) Signalling DetectionSina Abbasi, Ebrahim Bedeer
Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling can improve the spectral efficiency (SE); however, at the expense of high computational complexity to remove the introduced intersymbol interference (ISI). Motivated by the recent success of ML in physical layer (PHY) problems, in this paper we investigate the use of ML in reducing the detection complexity of FTN signaling. In particular, we view the FTN signaling detection problem as a classification task, where the received signal is considered as an unlabeled class sample that belongs to a set of all possible classes samples. If we use an off-shelf classifier, then the set of all possible classes samples belongs to an $N$-dimensional space, where $N$ is the transmission block length, which has a huge computational complexity. We propose a low-complexity classifier (LCC) that exploits the ISI structure of FTN signaling to perform the classification task in $N_p \ll N$-dimension space. The proposed LCC consists of two stages: 1) offline pre-classification that constructs the labeled classes samples in the $N_p$-dimensional space and 2) online classification where the detection of the received samples occurs. The proposed LCC is extended to produce soft-outputs as well. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed LCC in balancing performance and complexity.

Robust Single- and Multi-Pinching Antenna Systems Under User Location UncertaintyHao Feng, Ebrahim Bedeer, Ming Zeng et al.
Pinching antenna (PA) systems have recently emerged as a promising architecture for reconfigurable wireless communications by enabling flexible antenna placement along a dielectric waveguide. However, existing works typically assume perfect knowledge of user locations, which is impractical in real systems where location estimation errors are inevitable. In this paper, we investigate robust power allocation and antenna placement for PA systems under user location uncertainty. We consider both single-antenna and multi-antenna configurations, where the true user locations are unknown but lie within bounded uncertainty regions. For the single-antenna case, we adopt a worst-case robust design and leverage the S-procedure to transform the joint power allocation and antenna placement problem into a convex semidefinite program (SDP), ensuring that quality-of-service (QoS) constraints are satisfied for all possible user locations. For the multi-antenna case, we address the additional challenges arising from the superposition of channel components from multiple antennas by developing an efficient numerical procedure to evaluate the worst-case channel gain. Then, we derive a closed-form solution for optimal power allocation and develop a block coordinate descent algorithm to optimize antenna placement. Simulation results show that the proposed framework provides robustness to location uncertainty while achieving power consumption close to that of outage-based benchmark schemes.

Joint Cluster Head Selection and Trajectory Planning in UAV-Aided IoT Networks by Reinforcement Learning with Sequential ModelBotao Zhu, Ebrahim Bedeer, Ha H. Nguyen et al.
Employing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has attracted growing interests and emerged as the state-of-the-art technology for data collection in Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. In this paper, with the objective of minimizing the total energy consumption of the UAV-IoT system, we formulate the problem of jointly designing the UAV's trajectory and selecting cluster heads in the IoT network as a constrained combinatorial optimization problem which is classified as NP-hard and challenging to solve. We propose a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) with a sequential model strategy that can effectively learn the policy represented by a sequence-to-sequence neural network for the UAV's trajectory design in an unsupervised manner. Through extensive simulations, the obtained results show that the proposed DRL method can find the UAV's trajectory that requires much less energy consumption when compared to other baseline algorithms and achieves close-to-optimal performance. In addition, simulation results show that the trained model by our proposed DRL algorithm has an excellent generalization ability to larger problem sizes without the need to retrain the model.

UAV Trajectory Planning in Wireless Sensor Networks for Energy Consumption Minimization by Deep Reinforcement LearningBotao Zhu, Ebrahim Bedeer, Ha H. Nguyen et al.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a promising candidate solution for data collection of large-scale wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this paper, we investigate a UAV-aided WSN, where cluster heads (CHs) receive data from their member nodes, and a UAV is dispatched to collect data from CHs along the planned trajectory. We aim to minimize the total energy consumption of the UAV-WSN system in a complete round of data collection. Toward this end, we formulate the energy consumption minimization problem as a constrained combinatorial optimization problem by jointly selecting CHs from nodes within clusters and planning the UAV's visiting order to the selected CHs. The formulated energy consumption minimization problem is NP-hard, and hence, hard to solve optimally. In order to tackle this challenge, we propose a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) technique, pointer network-A* (Ptr-A*), which can efficiently learn from experiences the UAV trajectory policy for minimizing the energy consumption. The UAV's start point and the WSN with a set of pre-determined clusters are fed into the Ptr-A*, and the Ptr-A* outputs a group of CHs and the visiting order to these CHs, i.e., the UAV's trajectory. The parameters of the Ptr-A* are trained on small-scale clusters problem instances for faster training by using the actor-critic algorithm in an unsupervised manner. At inference, three search strategies are also proposed to improve the quality of solutions. Simulation results show that the trained models based on 20-clusters and 40-clusters have a good generalization ability to solve the UAV's trajectory planning problem in WSNs with different numbers of clusters, without the need to retrain the models. Furthermore, the results show that our proposed DRL algorithm outperforms two baseline techniques.
