FindIt: A Format-Informed Visual Detection Benchmark for Generalist Multimodal LLMs

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) are predominantly evaluated on free-form vision-language tasks such as visual question answering, captioning, and summarization. However, their practical use is rapidly expanding to more structured computer vision settings, where users prompt models to perform localization-centric tasks such as object detection, often within larger agentic or decision-making systems. Despite this shift, there is currently no standardized benchmark that systematically evaluates these capabilities at scale. In this work, we introduce the first comprehensive benchmark specifically designed to assess the promptable localization abilities of generalist MLLMs. Our benchmark spans four core task categories: object detection, referring expression detection, instance-level detection, and video-based detection. To enable consistent and fair evaluation, we develop a unified framework that standardizes inputs, enforces parsable bounding box outputs, and defines transparent evaluation protocols across tasks. Using this suite, we evaluate a diverse set of open-source and proprietary MLLMs, providing an in-depth analysis of their performance and limitations. Beyond accuracy, we examine models' ability to adhere to output format specifications, showing that current systems are highly sensitive to formatting constraints and often fail to generalize even to minor variations. Our results highlight both the strengths and shortcomings of state-of-the-art MLLMs in localization settings, and point toward important directions for improving multimodal model design and evaluation.

PhoCaL: A Multi-Modal Dataset for Category-Level Object Pose Estimation with Photometrically Challenging Objects

Object pose estimation is crucial for robotic applications and augmented reality. Beyond instance level 6D object pose estimation methods, estimating category-level pose and shape has become a promising trend. As such, a new research field needs to be supported by well-designed datasets. To provide a benchmark with high-quality ground truth annotations to the community, we introduce a multimodal dataset for category-level object pose estimation with photometrically challenging objects termed PhoCaL. PhoCaL comprises 60 high quality 3D models of household objects over 8 categories including highly reflective, transparent and symmetric objects. We developed a novel robot-supported multi-modal (RGB, depth, polarisation) data acquisition and annotation process. It ensures sub-millimeter accuracy of the pose for opaque textured, shiny and transparent objects, no motion blur and perfect camera synchronisation. To set a benchmark for our dataset, state-of-the-art RGB-D and monocular RGB methods are evaluated on the challenging scenes of PhoCaL.

HouseCat6D -- A Large-Scale Multi-Modal Category Level 6D Object Perception Dataset with Household Objects in Realistic Scenarios

Estimating 6D object poses is a major challenge in 3D computer vision. Building on successful instance-level approaches, research is shifting towards category-level pose estimation for practical applications. Current category-level datasets, however, fall short in annotation quality and pose variety. Addressing this, we introduce HouseCat6D, a new category-level 6D pose dataset. It features 1) multi-modality with Polarimetric RGB and Depth (RGBD+P), 2) encompasses 194 diverse objects across 10 household categories, including two photometrically challenging ones, and 3) provides high-quality pose annotations with an error range of only 1.35 mm to 1.74 mm. The dataset also includes 4) 41 large-scale scenes with comprehensive viewpoint and occlusion coverage, 5) a checkerboard-free environment, and 6) dense 6D parallel-jaw robotic grasp annotations. Additionally, we present benchmark results for leading category-level pose estimation networks.

Human-Scene Network: A Novel Baseline with Self-rectifying Loss for Weakly supervised Video Anomaly Detection

Video anomaly detection in surveillance systems with only video-level labels (i.e. weakly-supervised) is challenging. This is due to, (i) the complex integration of human and scene based anomalies comprising of subtle and sharp spatio-temporal cues in real-world scenarios, (ii) non-optimal optimization between normal and anomaly instances under weak supervision. In this paper, we propose a Human-Scene Network to learn discriminative representations by capturing both subtle and strong cues in a dissociative manner. In addition, a self-rectifying loss is also proposed that dynamically computes the pseudo temporal annotations from video-level labels for optimizing the Human-Scene Network effectively. The proposed Human-Scene Network optimized with self-rectifying loss is validated on three publicly available datasets i.e. UCF-Crime, ShanghaiTech and IITB-Corridor, outperforming recently reported state-of-the-art approaches on five out of the six scenarios considered.

LAC: Latent Action Composition for Skeleton-based Action Segmentation

Skeleton-based action segmentation requires recognizing composable actions in untrimmed videos. Current approaches decouple this problem by first extracting local visual features from skeleton sequences and then processing them by a temporal model to classify frame-wise actions. However, their performances remain limited as the visual features cannot sufficiently express composable actions. In this context, we propose Latent Action Composition (LAC), a novel self-supervised framework aiming at learning from synthesized composable motions for skeleton-based action segmentation. LAC is composed of a novel generation module towards synthesizing new sequences. Specifically, we design a linear latent space in the generator to represent primitive motion. New composed motions can be synthesized by simply performing arithmetic operations on latent representations of multiple input skeleton sequences. LAC leverages such synthesized sequences, which have large diversity and complexity, for learning visual representations of skeletons in both sequence and frame spaces via contrastive learning. The resulting visual encoder has a high expressive power and can be effectively transferred onto action segmentation tasks by end-to-end fine-tuning without the need for additional temporal models. We conduct a study focusing on transfer-learning and we show that representations learned from pre-trained LAC outperform the state-of-the-art by a large margin on TSU, Charades, PKU-MMD datasets.

ViA: View-invariant Skeleton Action Representation Learning via Motion Retargeting

Current self-supervised approaches for skeleton action representation learning often focus on constrained scenarios, where videos and skeleton data are recorded in laboratory settings. When dealing with estimated skeleton data in real-world videos, such methods perform poorly due to the large variations across subjects and camera viewpoints. To address this issue, we introduce ViA, a novel View-Invariant Autoencoder for self-supervised skeleton action representation learning. ViA leverages motion retargeting between different human performers as a pretext task, in order to disentangle the latent action-specific `Motion' features on top of the visual representation of a 2D or 3D skeleton sequence. Such `Motion' features are invariant to skeleton geometry and camera view and allow ViA to facilitate both, cross-subject and cross-view action classification tasks. We conduct a study focusing on transfer-learning for skeleton-based action recognition with self-supervised pre-training on real-world data (e.g., Posetics). Our results showcase that skeleton representations learned from ViA are generic enough to improve upon state-of-the-art action classification accuracy, not only on 3D laboratory datasets such as NTU-RGB+D 60 and NTU-RGB+D 120, but also on real-world datasets where only 2D data are accurately estimated, e.g., Toyota Smarthome, UAV-Human and Penn Action.

Depth-based Privileged Information for Boosting 3D Human Pose Estimation on RGB

Despite the recent advances in computer vision research, estimating the 3D human pose from single RGB images remains a challenging task, as multiple 3D poses can correspond to the same 2D projection on the image. In this context, depth data could help to disambiguate the 2D information by providing additional constraints about the distance between objects in the scene and the camera. Unfortunately, the acquisition of accurate depth data is limited to indoor spaces and usually is tied to specific depth technologies and devices, thus limiting generalization capabilities. In this paper, we propose a method able to leverage the benefits of depth information without compromising its broader applicability and adaptability in a predominantly RGB-camera-centric landscape. Our approach consists of a heatmap-based 3D pose estimator that, leveraging the paradigm of Privileged Information, is able to hallucinate depth information from the RGB frames given at inference time. More precisely, depth information is used exclusively during training by enforcing our RGB-based hallucination network to learn similar features to a backbone pre-trained only on depth data. This approach proves to be effective even when dealing with limited and small datasets. Experimental results reveal that the paradigm of Privileged Information significantly enhances the model's performance, enabling efficient extraction of depth information by using only RGB images.

Object Pose Transformer: Unifying Unseen Object Pose Estimation

Learning model-free object pose estimation for unseen instances remains a fundamental challenge in 3D vision. Existing methods typically fall into two disjoint paradigms: category-level approaches predict absolute poses in a canonical space but rely on predefined taxonomies, while relative pose methods estimate cross-view transformations but cannot recover single-view absolute pose. In this work, we propose Object Pose Transformer (\ours{}), a unified feed-forward framework that bridges these paradigms through task factorization within a single model. \ours{} jointly predicts depth, point maps, camera parameters, and normalized object coordinates (NOCS) from RGB inputs, enabling both category-level absolute SA(3) pose and unseen-object relative SE(3) pose. Our approach leverages contrastive object-centric latent embeddings for canonicalization without requiring semantic labels at inference time, and uses point maps as a camera-space representation to enable multi-view relative geometric reasoning. Through cross-frame feature interaction and shared object embeddings, our model leverages relative geometric consistency across views to improve absolute pose estimation, reducing ambiguity in single-view predictions. Furthermore, \ours{} is camera-agnostic, learning camera intrinsics on-the-fly and supporting optional depth input for metric-scale recovery, while remaining fully functional in RGB-only settings. Extensive experiments on diverse benchmarks (NOCS, HouseCat6D, Omni6DPose, Toyota-Light) demonstrate state-of-the-art performance in both absolute and relative pose estimation tasks within a single unified architecture.

SnapPose3D: Diffusion-Based Single-Frame 2D-to-3D Lifting of Human Poses

Depth ambiguity and joint uncertainty are the two main obstacles in obtaining accurate human pose predictions by 2D-to-3D lifting methods proposed in the literature. In particular, these issues are caused by 2D joint locations that can be mapped to multiple 3D positions, inducing multiple possible final poses. Following these considerations, we propose leveraging diffusion-based models generation capability to predict multiple hypotheses and aggregate them in a final accurate pose. Therefore, we introduce SnapPose3D, a pose-lifting framework trained deterministically to denoise 3D poses conditioned on both visual context and 2D pose features. SnapPose3D adopts a probabilistic approach during inference, generating multiple hypotheses through random sampling from a unit Gaussian distribution. Unlike most previous methods that address pose ambiguity by processing temporal sequences, SnapPose3D uses single frames as input, avoiding tracking and limiting computational cost, data acquisition complexity, and the need for online, real-time applications. We extensively evaluate SnapPose3D on well-known benchmarks for the 3D human pose estimation task showing its ability to generate and aggregate accurate hypotheses that lead to state-of-the-art results.

Mixture of Experts Guided by Gaussian Splatters Matters: A new Approach to Weakly-Supervised Video Anomaly Detection

Video Anomaly Detection (VAD) is a challenging task due to the variability of anomalous events and the limited availability of labeled data. Under the Weakly-Supervised VAD (WSVAD) paradigm, only video-level labels are provided during training, while predictions are made at the frame level. Although state-of-the-art models perform well on simple anomalies (e.g., explosions), they struggle with complex real-world events (e.g., shoplifting). This difficulty stems from two key issues: (1) the inability of current models to address the diversity of anomaly types, as they process all categories with a shared model, overlooking category-specific features; and (2) the weak supervision signal, which lacks precise temporal information, limiting the ability to capture nuanced anomalous patterns blended with normal events. To address these challenges, we propose Gaussian Splatting-guided Mixture of Experts (GS-MoE), a novel framework that employs a set of expert models, each specialized in capturing specific anomaly types. These experts are guided by a temporal Gaussian splatting loss, enabling the model to leverage temporal consistency and enhance weak supervision. The Gaussian splatting approach encourages a more precise and comprehensive representation of anomalies by focusing on temporal segments most likely to contain abnormal events. The predictions from these specialized experts are integrated through a mixture-of-experts mechanism to model complex relationships across diverse anomaly patterns. Our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance, with a 91.58% AUC on the UCF-Crime dataset, and demonstrates superior results on XD-Violence and MSAD datasets. By leveraging category-specific expertise and temporal guidance, GS-MoE sets a new benchmark for VAD under weak supervision.

Just Dance with $π$! A Poly-modal Inductor for Weakly-supervised Video Anomaly Detection

Weakly-supervised methods for video anomaly detection (VAD) are conventionally based merely on RGB spatio-temporal features, which continues to limit their reliability in real-world scenarios. This is due to the fact that RGB-features are not sufficiently distinctive in setting apart categories such as shoplifting from visually similar events. Therefore, towards robust complex real-world VAD, it is essential to augment RGB spatio-temporal features by additional modalities. Motivated by this, we introduce the Poly-modal Induced framework for VAD: "PI-VAD", a novel approach that augments RGB representations by five additional modalities. Specifically, the modalities include sensitivity to fine-grained motion (Pose), three dimensional scene and entity representation (Depth), surrounding objects (Panoptic masks), global motion (optical flow), as well as language cues (VLM). Each modality represents an axis of a polygon, streamlined to add salient cues to RGB. PI-VAD includes two plug-in modules, namely Pseudo-modality Generation module and Cross Modal Induction module, which generate modality-specific prototypical representation and, thereby, induce multi-modal information into RGB cues. These modules operate by performing anomaly-aware auxiliary tasks and necessitate five modality backbones -- only during training. Notably, PI-VAD achieves state-of-the-art accuracy on three prominent VAD datasets encompassing real-world scenarios, without requiring the computational overhead of five modality backbones at inference.

GazeD: Context-Aware Diffusion for Accurate 3D Gaze Estimation

We introduce GazeD, a new 3D gaze estimation method that jointly provides 3D gaze and human pose from a single RGB image. Leveraging the ability of diffusion models to deal with uncertainty, it generates multiple plausible 3D gaze and pose hypotheses based on the 2D context information extracted from the input image. Specifically, we condition the denoising process on the 2D pose, the surroundings of the subject, and the context of the scene. With GazeD we also introduce a novel way of representing the 3D gaze by positioning it as an additional body joint at a fixed distance from the eyes. The rationale is that the gaze is usually closely related to the pose, and thus it can benefit from being jointly denoised during the diffusion process. Evaluations across three benchmark datasets demonstrate that GazeD achieves state-of-the-art performance in 3D gaze estimation, even surpassing methods that rely on temporal information. Self-Supervised Video Representation Learning via Latent Time Navigation

Self-supervised video representation learning aimed at maximizing similarity between different temporal segments of one video, in order to enforce feature persistence over time. This leads to loss of pertinent information related to temporal relationships, rendering actions such as `enter' and `leave' to be indistinguishable. To mitigate this limitation, we propose Latent Time Navigation (LTN), a time-parameterized contrastive learning strategy that is streamlined to capture fine-grained motions. Specifically, we maximize the representation similarity between different video segments from one video, while maintaining their representations time-aware along a subspace of the latent representation code including an orthogonal basis to represent temporal changes. Our extensive experimental analysis suggests that learning video representations by LTN consistently improves performance of action classification in fine-grained and human-oriented tasks (e.g., on Toyota Smarthome dataset). In addition, we demonstrate that our proposed model, when pre-trained on Kinetics-400, generalizes well onto the unseen real world video benchmark datasets UCF101 and HMDB51, achieving state-of-the-art performance in action recognition.

DemoGrasp: Few-Shot Learning for Robotic Grasping with Human Demonstration

The ability to successfully grasp objects is crucial in robotics, as it enables several interactive downstream applications. To this end, most approaches either compute the full 6D pose for the object of interest or learn to predict a set of grasping points. While the former approaches do not scale well to multiple object instances or classes yet, the latter require large annotated datasets and are hampered by their poor generalization capabilities to new geometries. To overcome these shortcomings, we propose to teach a robot how to grasp an object with a simple and short human demonstration. Hence, our approach neither requires many annotated images nor is it restricted to a specific geometry. We first present a small sequence of RGB-D images displaying a human-object interaction. This sequence is then leveraged to build associated hand and object meshes that represent the depicted interaction. Subsequently, we complete missing parts of the reconstructed object shape and estimate the relative transformation between the reconstruction and the visible object in the scene. Finally, we transfer the a-priori knowledge from the relative pose between object and human hand with the estimate of the current object pose in the scene into necessary grasping instructions for the robot. Exhaustive evaluations with Toyota's Human Support Robot (HSR) in real and synthetic environments demonstrate the applicability of our proposed methodology and its advantage in comparison to previous approaches.

UNIK: A Unified Framework for Real-world Skeleton-based Action Recognition

Action recognition based on skeleton data has recently witnessed increasing attention and progress. State-of-the-art approaches adopting Graph Convolutional networks (GCNs) can effectively extract features on human skeletons relying on the pre-defined human topology. Despite associated progress, GCN-based methods have difficulties to generalize across domains, especially with different human topological structures. In this context, we introduce UNIK, a novel skeleton-based action recognition method that is not only effective to learn spatio-temporal features on human skeleton sequences but also able to generalize across datasets. This is achieved by learning an optimal dependency matrix from the uniform distribution based on a multi-head attention mechanism. Subsequently, to study the cross-domain generalizability of skeleton-based action recognition in real-world videos, we re-evaluate state-of-the-art approaches as well as the proposed UNIK in light of a novel Posetics dataset. This dataset is created from Kinetics-400 videos by estimating, refining and filtering poses. We provide an analysis on how much performance improves on smaller benchmark datasets after pre-training on Posetics for the action classification task. Experimental results show that the proposed UNIK, with pre-training on Posetics, generalizes well and outperforms state-of-the-art when transferred onto four target action classification datasets: Toyota Smarthome, Penn Action, NTU-RGB+D 60 and NTU-RGB+D 120.

Toyota Smarthome Untrimmed: Real-World Untrimmed Videos for Activity Detection

Designing activity detection systems that can be successfully deployed in daily-living environments requires datasets that pose the challenges typical of real-world scenarios. In this paper, we introduce a new untrimmed daily-living dataset that features several real-world challenges: Toyota Smarthome Untrimmed (TSU). TSU contains a wide variety of activities performed in a spontaneous manner. The dataset contains dense annotations including elementary, composite activities and activities involving interactions with objects. We provide an analysis of the real-world challenges featured by our dataset, highlighting the open issues for detection algorithms. We show that current state-of-the-art methods fail to achieve satisfactory performance on the TSU dataset. Therefore, we propose a new baseline method for activity detection to tackle the novel challenges provided by our dataset. This method leverages one modality (i.e. optic flow) to generate the attention weights to guide another modality (i.e RGB) to better detect the activity boundaries. This is particularly beneficial to detect activities characterized by high temporal variance. We show that the method we propose outperforms state-of-the-art methods on TSU and on another popular challenging dataset, Charades.
