WCL-BBCD: A Contrastive Learning and Knowledge Graph Approach to Named Entity Recognition

Renjie Zhou, Qiang Hu, Jian Wan et al.

Named Entity Recognition task is one of the core tasks of information extraction. Word ambiguity and word abbreviation are important reasons for the low recognition rate of named entities. In this paper, we propose a novel named entity recognition model WCL-BBCD (Word Contrastive Learning with BERT-BiLSTM-CRF-DBpedia), which incorporates the idea of contrastive learning. The model first trains the sentence pairs in the text, calculate similarity between sentence pairs, and fine-tunes BERT used for the named entity recognition task according to the similarity, so as to alleviate word ambiguity. Then, the fine-tuned BERT is combined with BiLSTM-CRF to perform the named entity recognition task. Finally, the recognition results are corrected in combination with prior knowledge such as knowledge graphs, so as to alleviate the low-recognition-rate problem caused by word abbreviations. The results of experimentals conducted on the CoNLL-2003 English dataset and OntoNotes V5 English dataset show that our model outperforms other similar models on.

Spike-driven Transformer V2: Meta Spiking Neural Network Architecture Inspiring the Design of Next-generation Neuromorphic Chips

Man Yao, Jiakui Hu, Tianxiang Hu et al.

Neuromorphic computing, which exploits Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) on neuromorphic chips, is a promising energy-efficient alternative to traditional AI. CNN-based SNNs are the current mainstream of neuromorphic computing. By contrast, no neuromorphic chips are designed especially for Transformer-based SNNs, which have just emerged, and their performance is only on par with CNN-based SNNs, offering no distinct advantage. In this work, we propose a general Transformer-based SNN architecture, termed as ``Meta-SpikeFormer", whose goals are: 1) Lower-power, supports the spike-driven paradigm that there is only sparse addition in the network; 2) Versatility, handles various vision tasks; 3) High-performance, shows overwhelming performance advantages over CNN-based SNNs; 4) Meta-architecture, provides inspiration for future next-generation Transformer-based neuromorphic chip designs. Specifically, we extend the Spike-driven Transformer in \citet{yao2023spike} into a meta architecture, and explore the impact of structure, spike-driven self-attention, and skip connection on its performance. On ImageNet-1K, Meta-SpikeFormer achieves 80.0\% top-1 accuracy (55M), surpassing the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) SNN baselines (66M) by 3.7\%. This is the first direct training SNN backbone that can simultaneously supports classification, detection, and segmentation, obtaining SOTA results in SNNs. Finally, we discuss the inspiration of the meta SNN architecture for neuromorphic chip design. Source code and models are available at \url{https://github.com/BICLab/Spike-Driven-Transformer-V2}.

Scaling Spike-driven Transformer with Efficient Spike Firing Approximation Training

Man Yao, Xuerui Qiu, Tianxiang Hu et al.

The ambition of brain-inspired Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) is to become a low-power alternative to traditional Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). This work addresses two major challenges in realizing this vision: the performance gap between SNNs and ANNs, and the high training costs of SNNs. We identify intrinsic flaws in spiking neurons caused by binary firing mechanisms and propose a Spike Firing Approximation (SFA) method using integer training and spike-driven inference. This optimizes the spike firing pattern of spiking neurons, enhancing efficient training, reducing power consumption, improving performance, enabling easier scaling, and better utilizing neuromorphic chips. We also develop an efficient spike-driven Transformer architecture and a spike-masked autoencoder to prevent performance degradation during SNN scaling. On ImageNet-1k, we achieve state-of-the-art top-1 accuracy of 78.5\%, 79.8\%, 84.0\%, and 86.2\% with models containing 10M, 19M, 83M, and 173M parameters, respectively. For instance, the 10M model outperforms the best existing SNN by 7.2\% on ImageNet, with training time acceleration and inference energy efficiency improved by 4.5$\times$ and 3.9$\times$, respectively. We validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method across various tasks, including object detection, semantic segmentation, and neuromorphic vision tasks. This work enables SNNs to match ANN performance while maintaining the low-power advantage, marking a significant step towards SNNs as a general visual backbone. Hulu-Med: A Transparent Generalist Model towards Holistic Medical Vision-Language Understanding

Songtao Jiang, Yuan Wang, Sibo Song et al.

Real-world clinical decision-making requires integrating heterogeneous data, including medical text, 2D images, 3D volumes, and videos, while existing AI systems fail to unify all these signals, limiting their utility. In this paper, we introduce Hulu-Med, a transparent, generalist medical Vision-Language Model (VLM) designed to unify language-only, 2D/3D vision-language, and video understanding within a single architecture. Hulu-Med is trained on a curated corpus of 16.7 million samples, comprising exclusively public or synthetic data, spanning 12 major anatomical systems and 14 medical imaging modalities. Hulu-Med employs a medical-aware token-reduction strategy that prunes redundant visual tokens, achieving up to a 55% reduction for 3D and video inputs, improving cross-modal efficiency, and enabling training at 7B-32B parameter scales in approximately 4,000-40,000 GPU hours. Across 30 public in-domain and out-of-domain medical benchmarks-covering text reasoning, visual question answering, report generation, multilingual dialogue, video understanding, and rare disease diagnosis-Hulu-Med surpasses existing open-source models on 27 of 30 benchmarks and outperforms proprietary systems such as GPT-4o on 16 benchmarks. Despite being a VLM, Hulu-Med outperforms GPT-4o and matches GPT-o1 on the text-only HealthBench. For the first time in the community, we provide a fully transparent, reproducible and cost-effective pipeline for holistic medical vision-language understanding by releasing our end-to-end data curation, training procedures, and model parameters. MedEthicsQA: A Comprehensive Question Answering Benchmark for Medical Ethics Evaluation of LLMs

Jianhui Wei, Zijie Meng, Zikai Xiao et al.

While Medical Large Language Models (MedLLMs) have demonstrated remarkable potential in clinical tasks, their ethical safety remains insufficiently explored. This paper introduces $\textbf{MedEthicsQA}$, a comprehensive benchmark comprising $\textbf{5,623}$ multiple-choice questions and $\textbf{5,351}$ open-ended questions for evaluation of medical ethics in LLMs. We systematically establish a hierarchical taxonomy integrating global medical ethical standards. The benchmark encompasses widely used medical datasets, authoritative question banks, and scenarios derived from PubMed literature. Rigorous quality control involving multi-stage filtering and multi-faceted expert validation ensures the reliability of the dataset with a low error rate ($2.72\%$). Evaluation of state-of-the-art MedLLMs exhibit declined performance in answering medical ethics questions compared to their foundation counterparts, elucidating the deficiencies of medical ethics alignment. The dataset, registered under CC BY-NC 4.0 license, is available at https://github.com/JianhuiWei7/MedEthicsQA.
