Link the World: Improving Open-domain Conversation with Dynamic Spatiotemporal-aware KnowledgeHan Zhou, Xinchao Xu, Wenquan Wu et al.
Making chatbots world aware in a conversation like a human is a crucial challenge, where the world may contain dynamic knowledge and spatiotemporal state. Several recent advances have tried to link the dialog system to a static knowledge base or search engine, but they do not contain all the world information needed for conversations. In contrast, we propose a new method to improve the dialogue system using spatiotemporal aware dynamic knowledge. We utilize service information as a way for the dialogue system to link the world. The system actively builds a request according to the dialog context and spatiotemporal state to get service information and then generates world aware responses. To implement this method, we collect DuSinc, an open-domain human-human dialogue dataset, where a participant can access the service to get the information needed for dialogue responses. Through automatic and human evaluations, we found that service information significantly improves the consistency, informativeness, factuality, and engagingness of the dialogue system, making it behave more like a human. Compared to the pre-trained models without spatiotemporal aware dynamic knowledge, the overall session-level score was improved by 60.87\%. The collection dataset and methods will be open-sourced.
Towards Boosting the Open-Domain Chatbot with Human FeedbackHua Lu, Siqi Bao, Huang He et al.
Many open-domain dialogue models pre-trained with social media comments can generate coherent replies but have difficulties producing engaging responses when interacting with real users. This phenomenon might mainly result from the deficiency of annotated human-human conversations and the misalignment with human preference. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient approach Diamante to boost the open-domain chatbot, where two kinds of human feedback (including explicit demonstration and implicit preference) are collected and leveraged. By asking annotators to select or amend the model-generated candidate responses, Diamante efficiently collects the human demonstrated responses and constructs a Chinese chit-chat dataset. To enhance the alignment with human preference, Diamante leverages the implicit preference in the data collection process and introduces the generation-evaluation joint training. Comprehensive experiments indicate that the Diamante dataset and joint training paradigm can significantly boost the performance of Chinese pre-trained dialogue models.

Query Enhanced Knowledge-Intensive Conversation via Unsupervised Joint ModelingMingzhu Cai, Siqi Bao, Xin Tian et al. · baidu
In this paper, we propose an unsupervised query enhanced approach for knowledge-intensive conversations, namely QKConv. There are three modules in QKConv: a query generator, an off-the-shelf knowledge selector, and a response generator. QKConv is optimized through joint training, which produces the response by exploring multiple candidate queries and leveraging corresponding selected knowledge. The joint training solely relies on the dialogue context and target response, getting exempt from extra query annotations or knowledge provenances. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed QKConv, we conduct experiments on three representative knowledge-intensive conversation datasets: conversational question-answering, task-oriented dialogue, and knowledge-grounded conversation. Experimental results reveal that QKConv performs better than all unsupervised methods across three datasets and achieves competitive performance compared to supervised methods.

PLATO-K: Internal and External Knowledge Enhanced Dialogue GenerationSiqi Bao, Huang He, Jun Xu et al.
Recently, the practical deployment of open-domain dialogue systems has been plagued by the knowledge issue of information deficiency and factual inaccuracy. To this end, we introduce PLATO-K based on two-stage dialogic learning to strengthen internal knowledge memorization and external knowledge exploitation. In the first stage, PLATO-K learns through massive dialogue corpora and memorizes essential knowledge into model parameters. In the second stage, PLATO-K mimics human beings to search for external information and to leverage the knowledge in response generation. Extensive experiments reveal that the knowledge issue is alleviated significantly in PLATO-K with such comprehensive internal and external knowledge enhancement. Compared to the existing state-of-the-art Chinese dialogue model, the overall engagingness of PLATO-K is improved remarkably by 36.2% and 49.2% on chit-chat and knowledge-intensive conversations.

Q-TOD: A Query-driven Task-oriented Dialogue SystemXin Tian, Yingzhan Lin, Mengfei Song et al.
Existing pipelined task-oriented dialogue systems usually have difficulties adapting to unseen domains, whereas end-to-end systems are plagued by large-scale knowledge bases in practice. In this paper, we introduce a novel query-driven task-oriented dialogue system, namely Q-TOD. The essential information from the dialogue context is extracted into a query, which is further employed to retrieve relevant knowledge records for response generation. Firstly, as the query is in the form of natural language and not confined to the schema of the knowledge base, the issue of domain adaption is alleviated remarkably in Q-TOD. Secondly, as the query enables the decoupling of knowledge retrieval from the generation, Q-TOD gets rid of the issue of knowledge base scalability. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed Q-TOD, we collect query annotations for three publicly available task-oriented dialogue datasets. Comprehensive experiments verify that Q-TOD outperforms strong baselines and establishes a new state-of-the-art performance on these datasets.

Towards Building an Open-Domain Dialogue System Incorporated with Internet MemesHua Lu, Zhen Guo, Chanjuan Li et al.
In recent years, Internet memes have been widely used in online chatting. Compared with text-based communication, conversations become more expressive and attractive when Internet memes are incorporated. This paper presents our solutions for the Meme incorporated Open-domain Dialogue (MOD) Challenge of DSTC10, where three tasks are involved: text response modeling, meme retrieval, and meme emotion classification. Firstly, we leverage a large-scale pre-trained dialogue model for coherent and informative response generation. Secondly, based on interaction-based text-matching, our approach can retrieve appropriate memes with good generalization ability. Thirdly, we propose to model the emotion flow (EF) in conversations and introduce an auxiliary task of emotion description prediction (EDP) to boost the performance of meme emotion classification. Experimental results on the MOD dataset demonstrate that our methods can incorporate Internet memes into dialogue systems effectively.

Familia is an open-source toolkit for pragmatic topic modeling in industry. Familia abstracts the utilities of topic modeling in industry as two paradigms: semantic representation and semantic matching. Efficient implementations of the two paradigms are made publicly available for the first time. Furthermore, we provide off-the-shelf topic models trained on large-scale industrial corpora, including Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), SentenceLDA and Topical Word Embedding (TWE). We further describe typical applications which are successfully powered by topic modeling, in order to ease the confusions and difficulties of software engineers during topic model selection and utilization.

Retro*: Optimizing LLMs for Reasoning-Intensive Document RetrievalJunwei Lan, Jianlyu Chen, Zheng Liu et al.
With the growing popularity of LLM agents and RAG, it has become increasingly important to retrieve documents that are essential for solving a task, even when their connection to the task is indirect or implicit. Addressing this problem requires fine-grained reasoning to accurately assess the relevance between the task and each candidate document. This capability, however, poses a significant challenge for existing IR techniques. Despite recent progress in reasoning-enhanced IR, existing approaches still face significant challenges in applicability, scalability, and efficiency. In this work, we propose Retro*, a novel approach for reasoning-intensive document retrieval. Our method introduces a rubric-based relevance scoring mechanism, enabling the model to reason about the relationship between a task and a document based on explicitly defined criteria, whereby producing a fine-grained, interpretable relevance score. Retro* also supports test-time scaling by combining multiple reasoning trajectories via score integration, which produces more reliable relevance estimates. To optimize Retro*'s reasoning capabilities, we introduce a novel reinforcement learning algorithm tailored for its relevance scoring mechanism, which employs two composite rewards to fully exploit the trajectories of each training sample. Our experiments show that Retro* outperforms existing document retrieval methods with notable advantages, leading to state-of-the-art performance on the BRIGHT benchmark.

ChessArena: A Chess Testbed for Evaluating Strategic Reasoning Capabilities of Large Language ModelsJincheng Liu, Sijun He, Jingjing Wu et al.
Recent large language models (LLMs) have shown strong reasoning capabilities. However, a critical question remains: do these models possess genuine reasoning skills particularly complex strategic reasoning or are they primarily excelling at sophisticated pattern recognition within their training data? To address this question, this paper presents a chess testbed, ChessArena, to evaluate the strategic reasoning capabilities of LLMs. Chess requires complex strategic reasoning capabilities including long-term planning, strict rule comprehension, and multi-turn conversation memorization. Specifically, ChessArena is a competitive framework where LLMs play against each other, under four different play modes. The testbed is equipped with a ranking algorithm and a leaderboard. The testbed can also evaluate fine-grained capabilities including basic understanding, move selection, and puzzle solving. Over 13 LLMs with different modes are evaluated in ChessArena, playing over 800 games. The results reveal significant shortcomings in current LLMs: no model can beat Maia-1100 (a chess engine at human amateur level), while some even failed to defeat a random player that selects moves arbitrarily. We also present a strong baseline to the testbed: our fine-tuned Qwen3-8B substantially improved performance, approaching much larger state-of-the-art reasoning models.

TOD-DA: Towards Boosting the Robustness of Task-oriented Dialogue Modeling on Spoken ConversationsXin Tian, Xinxian Huang, Dongfeng He et al.
Task-oriented dialogue systems have been plagued by the difficulties of obtaining large-scale and high-quality annotated conversations. Furthermore, most of the publicly available datasets only include written conversations, which are insufficient to reflect actual human behaviors in practical spoken dialogue systems. In this paper, we propose Task-oriented Dialogue Data Augmentation (TOD-DA), a novel model-agnostic data augmentation paradigm to boost the robustness of task-oriented dialogue modeling on spoken conversations. The TOD-DA consists of two modules: 1) Dialogue Enrichment to expand training data on task-oriented conversations for easing data sparsity and 2) Spoken Conversation Simulator to imitate oral style expressions and speech recognition errors in diverse granularities for bridging the gap between written and spoken conversations. With such designs, our approach ranked first in both tasks of DSTC10 Track2, a benchmark for task-oriented dialogue modeling on spoken conversations, demonstrating the superiority and effectiveness of our proposed TOD-DA.

Amendable Generation for Dialogue State TrackingXin Tian, Liankai Huang, Yingzhan Lin et al.
In task-oriented dialogue systems, recent dialogue state tracking methods tend to perform one-pass generation of the dialogue state based on the previous dialogue state. The mistakes of these models made at the current turn are prone to be carried over to the next turn, causing error propagation. In this paper, we propose a novel Amendable Generation for Dialogue State Tracking (AG-DST), which contains a two-pass generation process: (1) generating a primitive dialogue state based on the dialogue of the current turn and the previous dialogue state, and (2) amending the primitive dialogue state from the first pass. With the additional amending generation pass, our model is tasked to learn more robust dialogue state tracking by amending the errors that still exist in the primitive dialogue state, which plays the role of reviser in the double-checking process and alleviates unnecessary error propagation. Experimental results show that AG-DST significantly outperforms previous works in two active DST datasets (MultiWOZ 2.2 and WOZ 2.0), achieving new state-of-the-art performances.
PLATO-XL: Exploring the Large-scale Pre-training of Dialogue GenerationSiqi Bao, Huang He, Fan Wang et al.
To explore the limit of dialogue generation pre-training, we present the models of PLATO-XL with up to 11 billion parameters, trained on both Chinese and English social media conversations. To train such large models, we adopt the architecture of unified transformer with high computation and parameter efficiency. In addition, we carry out multi-party aware pre-training to better distinguish the characteristic information in social media conversations. With such designs, PLATO-XL successfully achieves superior performances as compared to other approaches in both Chinese and English chitchat. We further explore the capacity of PLATO-XL on other conversational tasks, such as knowledge grounded dialogue and task-oriented conversation. The experimental results indicate that PLATO-XL obtains state-of-the-art results across multiple conversational tasks, verifying its potential as a foundation model of conversational AI.
A Unified Pre-training Framework for Conversational AISiqi Bao, Bingjin Chen, Huang He et al.
In this work, we explore the application of PLATO-2 on various dialogue systems, including open-domain conversation, knowledge grounded dialogue, and task-oriented conversation. PLATO-2 is initially designed as an open-domain chatbot, trained via two-stage curriculum learning. In the first stage, a coarse-grained response generation model is learned to fit the simplified one-to-one mapping relationship. This model is applied to the task-oriented conversation, given that the semantic mappings tend to be deterministic in task completion. In the second stage, another fine-grained generation model and an evaluation model are further learned for diverse response generation and coherence estimation, respectively. With superior capability on capturing one-to-many mapping, such models are suitable for the open-domain conversation and knowledge grounded dialogue. For the comprehensive evaluation of PLATO-2, we have participated in multiple tasks of DSTC9, including interactive evaluation of open-domain conversation (Track3-task2), static evaluation of knowledge grounded dialogue (Track3-task1), and end-to-end task-oriented conversation (Track2-task1). PLATO-2 has obtained the 1st place in all three tasks, verifying its effectiveness as a unified framework for various dialogue systems.

The Track-1 of DSTC9 aims to effectively answer user requests or questions during task-oriented dialogues, which are out of the scope of APIs/DB. By leveraging external knowledge resources, relevant information can be retrieved and encoded into the response generation for these out-of-API-coverage queries. In this work, we have explored several advanced techniques to enhance the utilization of external knowledge and boost the quality of response generation, including schema guided knowledge decision, negatives enhanced knowledge selection, and knowledge grounded response generation. To evaluate the performance of our proposed method, comprehensive experiments have been carried out on the publicly available dataset. Our approach was ranked as the best in human evaluation of DSTC9 Track-1.
PLATO-2: Towards Building an Open-Domain Chatbot via Curriculum LearningSiqi Bao, Huang He, Fan Wang et al.
To build a high-quality open-domain chatbot, we introduce the effective training process of PLATO-2 via curriculum learning. There are two stages involved in the learning process. In the first stage, a coarse-grained generation model is trained to learn response generation under the simplified framework of one-to-one mapping. In the second stage, a fine-grained generative model augmented with latent variables and an evaluation model are further trained to generate diverse responses and to select the best response, respectively. PLATO-2 was trained on both Chinese and English data, whose effectiveness and superiority are verified through comprehensive evaluations, achieving new state-of-the-art results.

Pre-training models have been proved effective for a wide range of natural language processing tasks. Inspired by this, we propose a novel dialogue generation pre-training framework to support various kinds of conversations, including chit-chat, knowledge grounded dialogues, and conversational question answering. In this framework, we adopt flexible attention mechanisms to fully leverage the bi-directional context and the uni-directional characteristic of language generation. We also introduce discrete latent variables to tackle the inherent one-to-many mapping problem in response generation. Two reciprocal tasks of response generation and latent act recognition are designed and carried out simultaneously within a shared network. Comprehensive experiments on three publicly available datasets verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed framework.

3D Deep Affine-Invariant Shape Learning for Brain MR Image SegmentationZhou He, Siqi Bao, Albert Chung
Recent advancements in medical image segmentation techniques have achieved compelling results. However, most of the widely used approaches do not take into account any prior knowledge about the shape of the biomedical structures being segmented. More recently, some works have presented approaches to incorporate shape information. However, many of them are indeed introducing more parameters to the segmentation network to learn the general features, which any segmentation network is able learn, instead of specifically shape features. In this paper, we present a novel approach that seamlessly integrates the shape information into the segmentation network. Experiments on human brain MRI segmentation demonstrate that our approach can achieve a lower Hausdorff distance and higher Dice coefficient than the state-of-the-art approaches.

DAL: Dual Adversarial Learning for Dialogue GenerationShaobo Cui, Rongzhong Lian, Di Jiang et al.
In open-domain dialogue systems, generative approaches have attracted much attention for response generation. However, existing methods are heavily plagued by generating safe responses and unnatural responses. To alleviate these two problems, we propose a novel framework named Dual Adversarial Learning (DAL) for high-quality response generation. DAL is the first work to innovatively utilizes the duality between query generation and response generation to avoid safe responses and increase the diversity of the generated responses. Additionally, DAL uses adversarial learning to mimic human judges and guides the system to generate natural responses. Experimental results demonstrate that DAL effectively improves both diversity and overall quality of the generated responses. DAL outperforms the state-of-the-art methods regarding automatic metrics and human evaluations.
Know More about Each Other: Evolving Dialogue Strategy via Compound AssessmentSiqi Bao, Huang He, Fan Wang et al.
In this paper, a novel Generation-Evaluation framework is developed for multi-turn conversations with the objective of letting both participants know more about each other. For the sake of rational knowledge utilization and coherent conversation flow, a dialogue strategy which controls knowledge selection is instantiated and continuously adapted via reinforcement learning. Under the deployed strategy, knowledge grounded conversations are conducted with two dialogue agents. The generated dialogues are comprehensively evaluated on aspects like informativeness and coherence, which are aligned with our objective and human instinct. These assessments are integrated as a compound reward to guide the evolution of dialogue strategy via policy gradient. Comprehensive experiments have been carried out on the publicly available dataset, demonstrating that the proposed method outperforms the other state-of-the-art approaches significantly.
Familia: A Configurable Topic Modeling Framework for Industrial Text EngineeringDi Jiang, Yuanfeng Song, Rongzhong Lian et al.
In the last decade, a variety of topic models have been proposed for text engineering. However, except Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (PLSA) and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), most of existing topic models are seldom applied or considered in industrial scenarios. This phenomenon is caused by the fact that there are very few convenient tools to support these topic models so far. Intimidated by the demanding expertise and labor of designing and implementing parameter inference algorithms, software engineers are prone to simply resort to PLSA/LDA, without considering whether it is proper for their problem at hand or not. In this paper, we propose a configurable topic modeling framework named Familia, in order to bridge the huge gap between academic research fruits and current industrial practice. Familia supports an important line of topic models that are widely applicable in text engineering scenarios. In order to relieve burdens of software engineers without knowledge of Bayesian networks, Familia is able to conduct automatic parameter inference for a variety of topic models. Simply through changing the data organization of Familia, software engineers are able to easily explore a broad spectrum of existing topic models or even design their own topic models, and find the one that best suits the problem at hand. With its superior extendability, Familia has a novel sampling mechanism that strikes balance between effectiveness and efficiency of parameter inference. Furthermore, Familia is essentially a big topic modeling framework that supports parallel parameter inference and distributed parameter storage. The utilities and necessity of Familia are demonstrated in real-life industrial applications. Familia would significantly enlarge software engineers' arsenal of topic models and pave the way for utilizing highly customized topic models in real-life problems.
