Toward Reinforcement Learning-based Rectilinear Macro Placement Under Human Constraints

Tuyen P. Le, Hieu T. Nguyen, Seungyeol Baek et al.

Macro placement is a critical phase in chip design, which becomes more intricate when involving general rectilinear macros and layout areas. Furthermore, macro placement that incorporates human-like constraints, such as design hierarchy and peripheral bias, has the potential to significantly reduce the amount of additional manual labor required from designers. This study proposes a methodology that leverages an approach suggested by Google's Circuit Training (G-CT) to provide a learning-based macro placer that not only supports placing rectilinear cases, but also adheres to crucial human-like design principles. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework in achieving power-performance-area (PPA) metrics and in obtaining placements of high quality, comparable to those produced with human intervention. Additionally, our methodology shows potential as a generalized model to address diverse macro shapes and layout areas.

Center Emphasized Visual Saliency and a Contrast-based Full Reference Image Quality Index

Md Abu Layek, Sanjida Afroz, TaeChoong Chung et al.

Objective image quality assessment (IQA) is imperative in the current multimedia-intensive world, in order to assess the visual quality of an image at close to a human level of ability. Many~parameters such as color intensity, structure, sharpness, contrast, presence of an object, etc., draw human attention to an image. Psychological vision research suggests that human vision is biased to the center area of an image and display screen. As a result, if the center part contains any visually salient information, it draws human attention even more and any distortion in that part will be better perceived than other parts. To the best of our knowledge, previous IQA methods have not considered this fact. In this paper, we propose a full reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) approach using visual saliency and contrast; however, we give extra attention to the center by increasing the sensitivity of the similarity maps in that region. We evaluated our method on three large-scale popular benchmark databases used by most of the current IQA researchers (TID2008, CSIQ~and LIVE), having a total of 3345 distorted images with 28~different kinds of distortions. Our~method is compared with 13 state-of-the-art approaches. This comparison reveals the stronger correlation of our method with human-evaluated values. The prediction-of-quality score is consistent for distortion specific as well as distortion independent cases. Moreover, faster processing makes it applicable to any real-time application. The MATLAB code is publicly available to test the algorithm and can be found online at http://layek.khu.ac.kr/CEQI.

Deep Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning Algorithm in Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes

Le Pham Tuyen, Ngo Anh Vien, Abu Layek et al.

In recent years, reinforcement learning has achieved many remarkable successes due to the growing adoption of deep learning techniques and the rapid growth in computing power. Nevertheless, it is well-known that flat reinforcement learning algorithms are often not able to learn well and data-efficient in tasks having hierarchical structures, e.g. consisting of multiple subtasks. Hierarchical reinforcement learning is a principled approach that is able to tackle these challenging tasks. On the other hand, many real-world tasks usually have only partial observability in which state measurements are often imperfect and partially observable. The problems of RL in such settings can be formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP). In this paper, we study hierarchical RL in POMDP in which the tasks have only partial observability and possess hierarchical properties. We propose a hierarchical deep reinforcement learning approach for learning in hierarchical POMDP. The deep hierarchical RL algorithm is proposed to apply to both MDP and POMDP learning. We evaluate the proposed algorithm on various challenging hierarchical POMDP.
