ChildVox: A Speech, Audio, and Large Audio-Language Model Benchmark in Understanding and Characterizing Sound across Childhood

We present ChildVox, a novel benchmark for characterizing the diverse acoustic signals through which children communicate. Specifically, ChildVox follows the full developmental trajectory from birth through school age, covering physiological sounds, non-linguistic vocalizations, canonical syllables, and spoken language. ChildVox integrates more than 20 sub-tasks across 17 child-centered audio and speech datasets, enabling systematic cross-corpus and cross-domain comparison. We evaluate a representative range of audio and speech foundation models, including self-supervised, ASR-oriented, and large audio-language models, on tasks including physiological sound classification, vocalization and canonical syllables modeling, and speech quality assessment and recognition. Benchmark results show that ChildVox provides a suite of high-performance models in recognizing a wide range of acoustic signals from children, supporting downstream applications such as characterizing children's language levels and tracking speech production with age.

MM-AU:Towards Multimodal Understanding of Advertisement Videos

Advertisement videos (ads) play an integral part in the domain of Internet e-commerce as they amplify the reach of particular products to a broad audience or can serve as a medium to raise awareness about specific issues through concise narrative structures. The narrative structures of advertisements involve several elements like reasoning about the broad content (topic and the underlying message) and examining fine-grained details involving the transition of perceived tone due to the specific sequence of events and interaction among characters. In this work, to facilitate the understanding of advertisements along the three important dimensions of topic categorization, perceived tone transition, and social message detection, we introduce a multimodal multilingual benchmark called MM-AU composed of over 8.4K videos (147 hours) curated from multiple web sources. We explore multiple zero-shot reasoning baselines through the application of large language models on the ads transcripts. Further, we demonstrate that leveraging signals from multiple modalities, including audio, video, and text, in multimodal transformer-based supervised models leads to improved performance compared to unimodal approaches.

Egocentric Speaker Classification in Child-Adult Dyadic Interactions: From Sensing to Computational Modeling

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by challenges in social communication, repetitive behavior, and sensory processing. One important research area in ASD is evaluating children's behavioral changes over time during treatment. The standard protocol with this objective is BOSCC, which involves dyadic interactions between a child and clinicians performing a pre-defined set of activities. A fundamental aspect of understanding children's behavior in these interactions is automatic speech understanding, particularly identifying who speaks and when. Conventional approaches in this area heavily rely on speech samples recorded from a spectator perspective, and there is limited research on egocentric speech modeling. In this study, we design an experiment to perform speech sampling in BOSCC interviews from an egocentric perspective using wearable sensors and explore pre-training Ego4D speech samples to enhance child-adult speaker classification in dyadic interactions. Our findings highlight the potential of egocentric speech collection and pre-training to improve speaker classification accuracy.

VoxCare: Studying Natural Communication Behaviors of Hospital Caregivers through Wearable Sensing of Egocentric Audio

Healthcare professionals work in complex, high-stakes environments where effective communication is critical for care delivery, team coordination, and individual well-being. However, communication activity in everyday clinical settings remains challenging to measure and largely unexplored in human behavioral research. We present VoxCare, a scalable egocentric wearable audio sensing and computing system that captures natural communication behaviors of hospital professionals in real-world settings without storing raw audio. VoxCare performs real-time, on-device acoustic feature extraction and applies a speech foundation model-guided teacher-student framework to identify foreground speech activity. From these features, VoxCare derives interpretable behavioral measures of communication frequency, duration, and vocal arousal. Our analyses reveal how, when, and how often clinicians communicate across different shifts and working units, and suggest that communication activity reflects underlying workload and stress. By enabling continuous assessment of communication patterns in everyday contexts, this study provides data-driven approaches to understand the behaviors of healthcare providers and ultimately improve healthcare delivery.

Examining Test-Time Adaptation for Personalized Child Speech Recognition

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) models often experience performance degradation due to data domain shifts introduced at test time, a challenge that is further amplified for child speakers. Test-time adaptation (TTA) methods have shown great potential in bridging this domain gap. However, the use of TTA to adapt ASR models to the individual differences in each child's speech has not yet been systematically studied. In this work, we investigate the effectiveness of two widely used TTA methods-SUTA, SGEM-in adapting off-the-shelf ASR models and their fine-tuned versions for child speech recognition, with the goal of enabling continuous, unsupervised adaptation at test time. Our findings show that TTA significantly improves the performance of both off-the-shelf and fine-tuned ASR models, both on average and across individual child speakers, compared to unadapted baselines. However, while TTA helps adapt to individual variability, it may still be limited with non-linguistic child speech.

Voxlect: A Speech Foundation Model Benchmark for Modeling Dialects and Regional Languages Around the Globe

We present Voxlect, a novel benchmark for modeling dialects and regional languages worldwide using speech foundation models. Specifically, we report comprehensive benchmark evaluations on dialects and regional language varieties in English, Arabic, Mandarin and Cantonese, Tibetan, Indic languages, Thai, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, and Italian. Our study used over 2 million training utterances from 30 publicly available speech corpora that are provided with dialectal information. We evaluate the performance of several widely used speech foundation models in classifying speech dialects. We assess the robustness of the dialectal models under noisy conditions and present an error analysis that highlights modeling results aligned with geographic continuity. In addition to benchmarking dialect classification, we demonstrate several downstream applications enabled by Voxlect. Specifically, we show that Voxlect can be applied to augment existing speech recognition datasets with dialect information, enabling a more detailed analysis of ASR performance across dialectal variations. Voxlect is also used as a tool to evaluate the performance of speech generation systems. Can Generic LLMs Help Analyze Child-adult Interactions Involving Children with Autism in Clinical Observation?

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown significant potential in understanding human communication and interaction. However, their performance in the domain of child-inclusive interactions, including in clinical settings, remains less explored. In this work, we evaluate generic LLMs' ability to analyze child-adult dyadic interactions in a clinically relevant context involving children with ASD. Specifically, we explore LLMs in performing four tasks: classifying child-adult utterances, predicting engaged activities, recognizing language skills and understanding traits that are clinically relevant. Our evaluation shows that generic LLMs are highly capable of analyzing long and complex conversations in clinical observation sessions, often surpassing the performance of non-expert human evaluators. The results show their potential to segment interactions of interest, assist in language skills evaluation, identify engaged activities, and offer clinical-relevant context for assessments.

Who Said What WSW 2.0? Enhanced Automated Analysis of Preschool Classroom Speech

This paper introduces an automated framework WSW2.0 for analyzing vocal interactions in preschool classrooms, enhancing both accuracy and scalability through the integration of wav2vec2-based speaker classification and Whisper (large-v2 and large-v3) speech transcription. A total of 235 minutes of audio recordings (160 minutes from 12 children and 75 minutes from 5 teachers), were used to compare system outputs to expert human annotations. WSW2.0 achieves a weighted F1 score of .845, accuracy of .846, and an error-corrected kappa of .672 for speaker classification (child vs. teacher). Transcription quality is moderate to high with word error rates of .119 for teachers and .238 for children. WSW2.0 exhibits relatively high absolute agreement intraclass correlations (ICC) with expert transcriptions for a range of classroom language features. These include teacher and child mean utterance length, lexical diversity, question asking, and responses to questions and other utterances, which show absolute agreement intraclass correlations between .64 and .98. To establish scalability, we apply the framework to an extensive dataset spanning two years and over 1,592 hours of classroom audio recordings, demonstrating the framework's robustness for broad real-world applications. These findings highlight the potential of deep learning and natural language processing techniques to revolutionize educational research by providing accurate measures of key features of preschool classroom speech, ultimately guiding more effective intervention strategies and supporting early childhood language development.

Large Language Models based ASR Error Correction for Child Conversations

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) has recently shown remarkable progress, but accurately transcribing children's speech remains a significant challenge. Recent developments in Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown promise in improving ASR transcriptions. However, their applications in child speech including conversational scenarios are underexplored. In this study, we explore the use of LLMs in correcting ASR errors for conversational child speech. We demonstrate the promises and challenges of LLMs through experiments on two children's conversational speech datasets with both zero-shot and fine-tuned ASR outputs. We find that while LLMs are helpful in correcting zero-shot ASR outputs and fine-tuned CTC-based ASR outputs, it remains challenging for LLMs to improve ASR performance when incorporating contextual information or when using fine-tuned autoregressive ASR (e.g., Whisper) outputs.

Exploring Speech Foundation Models for Speaker Diarization in Child-Adult Dyadic Interactions

Speech foundation models, trained on vast datasets, have opened unique opportunities in addressing challenging low-resource speech understanding, such as child speech. In this work, we explore the capabilities of speech foundation models on child-adult speaker diarization. We show that exemplary foundation models can achieve 39.5% and 62.3% relative reductions in Diarization Error Rate and Speaker Confusion Rate, respectively, compared to previous speaker diarization methods. In addition, we benchmark and evaluate the speaker diarization results of the speech foundation models with varying the input audio window size, speaker demographics, and training data ratio. Our results highlight promising pathways for understanding and adopting speech foundation models to facilitate child speech understanding.

Understanding Spoken Language Development of Children with ASD Using Pre-trained Speech Embeddings

Speech processing techniques are useful for analyzing speech and language development in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), who are often varied and delayed in acquiring these skills. Early identification and intervention are crucial, but traditional assessment methodologies such as caregiver reports are not adequate for the requisite behavioral phenotyping. Natural Language Sample (NLS) analysis has gained attention as a promising complement. Researchers have developed benchmarks for spoken language capabilities in children with ASD, obtainable through the analysis of NLS. This paper proposes applications of speech processing technologies in support of automated assessment of children's spoken language development by classification between child and adult speech and between speech and nonverbal vocalization in NLS, with respective F1 macro scores of 82.6% and 67.8%, underscoring the potential for accurate and scalable tools for ASD research and clinical use.

Cross Domain Adaptation by Learning Partially Shared Classifiers and Weighting Source Data Points in the Shared Subspaces

Transfer learning is a problem defined over two domains. These two domains share the same feature space and class label space, but have significantly different distributions. One domain has sufficient labels, named as source domain, and the other domain has few labels, named as target do- main. The problem is to learn a effective classifier for the target domain. In this paper, we propose a novel transfer learning method for this problem by learning a partially shared classifier for the target domain, and weighting the source domain data points. We learn some shared subspaces for both the data points of the two domains, and a shared classifier in the shared subspaces. We hope that in the shared subspaces, the distributions of two domain can match each other well, and to match the distributions, we weight the source domain data points with different weighting factors. Moreover, we adapt the shared classifier to each domain by learning different adaptation functions. To learn the subspace transformation matrices, the classifier parameters, and the adaptation parameters, we build a objective function with weighted clas- sification errors, parameter regularization, local reconstruction regularization, and distribution matching. This objective function is minimized by an itera- tive algorithm. Experiments show its effectiveness over benchmark data sets, including travel destination review data set, face expression data set, spam email data set, etc.
