ARNOLD: A Benchmark for Language-Grounded Task Learning With Continuous States in Realistic 3D ScenesRan Gong, Jiangyong Huang, Yizhou Zhao et al. · berkeley
Understanding the continuous states of objects is essential for task learning and planning in the real world. However, most existing task learning benchmarks assume discrete (e.g., binary) object goal states, which poses challenges for the learning of complex tasks and transferring learned policy from simulated environments to the real world. Furthermore, state discretization limits a robot's ability to follow human instructions based on the grounding of actions and states. To tackle these challenges, we present ARNOLD, a benchmark that evaluates language-grounded task learning with continuous states in realistic 3D scenes. ARNOLD is comprised of 8 language-conditioned tasks that involve understanding object states and learning policies for continuous goals. To promote language-instructed learning, we provide expert demonstrations with template-generated language descriptions. We assess task performance by utilizing the latest language-conditioned policy learning models. Our results indicate that current models for language-conditioned manipulations continue to experience significant challenges in novel goal-state generalizations, scene generalizations, and object generalizations. These findings highlight the need to develop new algorithms that address this gap and underscore the potential for further research in this area. Project website: https://arnold-benchmark.github.io.

GR00T N1: An Open Foundation Model for Generalist Humanoid RobotsJohan Bjorck, Fernando Castañeda, Nikita Cherniadev et al. · nvidia
General-purpose robots need a versatile body and an intelligent mind. Recent advancements in humanoid robots have shown great promise as a hardware platform for building generalist autonomy in the human world. A robot foundation model, trained on massive and diverse data sources, is essential for enabling the robots to reason about novel situations, robustly handle real-world variability, and rapidly learn new tasks. To this end, we introduce GR00T N1, an open foundation model for humanoid robots. GR00T N1 is a Vision-Language-Action (VLA) model with a dual-system architecture. The vision-language module (System 2) interprets the environment through vision and language instructions. The subsequent diffusion transformer module (System 1) generates fluid motor actions in real time. Both modules are tightly coupled and jointly trained end-to-end. We train GR00T N1 with a heterogeneous mixture of real-robot trajectories, human videos, and synthetically generated datasets. We show that our generalist robot model GR00T N1 outperforms the state-of-the-art imitation learning baselines on standard simulation benchmarks across multiple robot embodiments. Furthermore, we deploy our model on the Fourier GR-1 humanoid robot for language-conditioned bimanual manipulation tasks, achieving strong performance with high data efficiency.

VRKitchen2.0-IndoorKit: A Tutorial for Augmented Indoor Scene Building in OmniverseYizhou Zhao, Steven Gong, Xiaofeng Gao et al.
With the recent progress of simulations by 3D modeling software and game engines, many researchers have focused on Embodied AI tasks in the virtual environment. However, the research community lacks a platform that can easily serve both indoor scene synthesis and model benchmarking with various algorithms. Meanwhile, computer graphics-related tasks need a toolkit for implementing advanced synthesizing techniques. To facilitate the study of indoor scene building methods and their potential robotics applications, we introduce INDOORKIT: a built-in toolkit for NVIDIA OMNIVERSE that provides flexible pipelines for indoor scene building, scene randomizing, and animation controls. Besides, combining Python coding in the animation software INDOORKIT assists researchers in creating real-time training and controlling avatars and robotics. Dramatic progress has been made in animating individual characters. However, we still lack automatic control over activities between characters, especially those involving interactions. In this paper, we present a novel energy-based framework to sample and synthesize animations by associating the characters' body motions, facial expressions, and social relations. We propose a Spatial-Temporal And-Or graph (ST-AOG), a stochastic grammar model, to encode the contextual relationship between motion, emotion, and relation, forming a triangle in a conditional random field. We train our model from a labeled dataset of two-character interactions. Experiments demonstrate that our method can recognize the social relation between two characters and sample new scenes of vivid motion and emotion using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) given the social relation. Thus, our method can provide animators with an automatic way to generate 3D character animations, help synthesize interactions between Non-Player Characters (NPCs), and enhance machine emotion intelligence (EQ) in virtual reality (VR).

We introduce OPEND, a benchmark for learning how to use a hand to open cabinet doors or drawers in a photo-realistic and physics-reliable simulation environment driven by language instruction. To solve the task, we propose a multi-step planner composed of a deep neural network and rule-base controllers. The network is utilized to capture spatial relationships from images and understand semantic meaning from language instructions. Controllers efficiently execute the plan based on the spatial and semantic understanding. We evaluate our system by measuring its zero-shot performance in test data set. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of decision planning by our multi-step planner for different hands, while suggesting that there is significant room for developing better models to address the challenge brought by language understanding, spatial reasoning, and long-term manipulation. We will release OPEND and host challenges to promote future research in this area.

CurveRL: Principled Distribution-Aware Context Reweighting for LLM ReasoningKe Sun, Yizhou Zhao, Jiayi Xin et al.
Context or prompt-level reweighting has emerged as a central algorithmic lever in Reinforcement Learning with Verified Rewards (RLVR) for improving the reasoning capability of large language models, yet the principle determining what constitutes an optimal weighting remains poorly understood. We address this gap by formulating prompt reweighting as a functional derivative of a utility functional defined in the pass-rate function space, yielding a unified optimality framework that accommodates existing schemes, including REINFORCE and GRPO. Building on this optimality framework, we propose a distribution-aware prompt reweighting approach, called CurveRL, based on a quantile coordinate transform, in which the weight assigned to each prompt depends not on the absolute value of pass rates but on its rank and density to reflect the distributional structure of the pass rates in the learning dynamics. Extensive experiments across multiple benchmarks demonstrate that our proposed CurveRL consistently outperforms GRPO and other RLVR baselines. Our study identifies context-distribution control as a principled axis for analyzing and designing prompt-reweighted RLVR algorithms. The code is released in https://github.com/zhyzmath/CurveRL.

Semantic-aligned Fusion Transformer for One-shot Object DetectionYizhou Zhao, Xun Guo, Yan Lu
One-shot object detection aims at detecting novel objects according to merely one given instance. With extreme data scarcity, current approaches explore various feature fusions to obtain directly transferable meta-knowledge. Yet, their performances are often unsatisfactory. In this paper, we attribute this to inappropriate correlation methods that misalign query-support semantics by overlooking spatial structures and scale variances. Upon analysis, we leverage the attention mechanism and propose a simple but effective architecture named Semantic-aligned Fusion Transformer (SaFT) to resolve these issues. Specifically, we equip SaFT with a vertical fusion module (VFM) for cross-scale semantic enhancement and a horizontal fusion module (HFM) for cross-sample feature fusion. Together, they broaden the vision for each feature point from the support to a whole augmented feature pyramid from the query, facilitating semantic-aligned associations. Extensive experiments on multiple benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our framework. Without fine-tuning on novel classes, it brings significant performance gains to one-stage baselines, lifting state-of-the-art results to a higher level.

Alignment-guided Temporal Attention for Video Action RecognitionYizhou Zhao, Zhenyang Li, Xun Guo et al.
Temporal modeling is crucial for various video learning tasks. Most recent approaches employ either factorized (2D+1D) or joint (3D) spatial-temporal operations to extract temporal contexts from the input frames. While the former is more efficient in computation, the latter often obtains better performance. In this paper, we attribute this to a dilemma between the sufficiency and the efficiency of interactions among various positions in different frames. These interactions affect the extraction of task-relevant information shared among frames. To resolve this issue, we prove that frame-by-frame alignments have the potential to increase the mutual information between frame representations, thereby including more task-relevant information to boost effectiveness. Then we propose Alignment-guided Temporal Attention (ATA) to extend 1-dimensional temporal attention with parameter-free patch-level alignments between neighboring frames. It can act as a general plug-in for image backbones to conduct the action recognition task without any model-specific design. Extensive experiments on multiple benchmarks demonstrate the superiority and generality of our module.

Training-free CryoET Tomogram SegmentationYizhou Zhao, Hengwei Bian, Michael Mu et al.
Cryogenic Electron Tomography (CryoET) is a useful imaging technology in structural biology that is hindered by its need for manual annotations, especially in particle picking. Recent works have endeavored to remedy this issue with few-shot learning or contrastive learning techniques. However, supervised training is still inevitable for them. We instead choose to leverage the power of existing 2D foundation models and present a novel, training-free framework, CryoSAM. In addition to prompt-based single-particle instance segmentation, our approach can automatically search for similar features, facilitating full tomogram semantic segmentation with only one prompt. CryoSAM is composed of two major parts: 1) a prompt-based 3D segmentation system that uses prompts to complete single-particle instance segmentation recursively with Cross-Plane Self-Prompting, and 2) a Hierarchical Feature Matching mechanism that efficiently matches relevant features with extracted tomogram features. They collaborate to enable the segmentation of all particles of one category with just one particle-specific prompt. Our experiments show that CryoSAM outperforms existing works by a significant margin and requires even fewer annotations in particle picking. This paper investigates the fundamental limits of information-theoretic decentralized secure aggregation (DSA) with user dropouts. We consider a fully decentralized network where $K$ users communicate over broadcast channels without a trusted aggregation server. Each user holds a private input and aims to recover the sum of the surviving users' inputs (users may drop) while ensuring that no additional information about individual inputs is revealed to that user, even if it can collude with other users. A two-round communication protocol is considered, where we assume at least $U$ users survive and each user can collude with at most $T$ other users. For this setting, the optimal communication rate region is fully characterized: we show that DSA is infeasible if $U\le T+1$; otherwise, the optimal rate region is given by $R_1\geq 1$ and $R_2\geq \frac{1}{U-T-1}$, where $R_1$ and $R_2$ denote the first- and second-round communication rates, respectively. The proposed aggregation scheme is based on correlated secret keys constructed from $(T+1)$-private maximum distance separable (MDS) matrices, which simultaneously provide robustness against user dropouts and security against collusion. We also derive tight converse bounds that establish the optimality of the proposed scheme. Our result shows that the optimal second-round communication rate depends only on the effective redundancy level $U-T-1$ regardless the total number of users.

On the Fundamental Limits of Hierarchical Secure Aggregation with Dropout and Collusion ResilienceZhou Li, Yizhou Zhao, Xiang Zhang et al.
We study the fundamental communication limits of information-theoretic secure aggregation in a hierarchical network consisting of a server, multiple relays, and multiple users per relay. Communication proceeds over two rounds and two hops, and the system is subject to arbitrary user and relay dropouts. Up to $T$ users may collude with either the server or any single relay. The server aims to recover the sum of the inputs of all users that survive the first round, while learning no additional information beyond the aggregate sum and the inputs of the colluding users. Each relay, however, must learn nothing about the users' inputs except for the information revealed by the inputs of the colluding users under the same collusion model. We introduce a four-dimensional rate tuple that captures the communication cost across rounds and hops. Under a delayed message availability model, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for feasibility and fully characterize the optimal first-round communication rates. For the second round, we characterize the optimal user-to-relay rate and derive lower and upper bounds on the relay-to-server rate. While these bounds do not coincide in general, they are tight in certain regimes of interest. Our results reveal a sharp threshold phenomenon: secure aggregation is feasible if and only if the total number of surviving users across surviving relays exceeds the collusion threshold. Achievability is established via a vector linear coding scheme with carefully structured correlated randomness exhibiting MDS-like properties, ensuring correctness and information-theoretic security under all possible dropout patterns. TAB-DRW: A DFT-based Robust Watermark for Generative Tabular DataYizhou Zhao, Xiang Li, Peter Song et al.
The rise of generative AI has enabled the production of high-fidelity synthetic tabular data across fields such as healthcare, finance, and public policy, raising growing concerns about data provenance and misuse. Watermarking offers a promising solution to address these concerns by ensuring the traceability of synthetic data, but existing methods face many limitations: they are computationally expensive due to reliance on large diffusion models, struggle with mixed discrete-continuous data, or lack robustness to post-modifications. To address them, we propose TAB-DRW, an efficient and robust post-editing watermarking scheme for generative tabular data. TAB-DRW embeds watermark signals in the frequency domain: it normalizes heterogeneous features via the Yeo-Johnson transformation and standardization, applies the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), and adjusts the imaginary parts of adaptively selected entries according to precomputed pseudorandom bits. To further enhance robustness and efficiency, we introduce a novel rank-based pseudorandom bit generation method that enables row-wise retrieval without incurring storage overhead. Experiments on five benchmark tabular datasets show that TAB-DRW achieves strong detectability and robustness against common post-processing attacks, while preserving high data fidelity and fully supporting mixed-type features.

Multi-Rollout On-Policy Distillation via Peer Successes and FailuresWeichen Yu, Xiaomin Li, Yizhou Zhao et al.
Large language models are often post-trained with sparse verifier rewards, which indicate whether a sampled trajectory succeeds but provide limited guidance about where reasoning succeeds or fails. On-policy distillation (OPD) offers denser token-level supervision by training on student-generated trajectories, yet existing methods typically distill each rollout independently and ignore the other attempts sampled for the same prompt. We introduce Multi-Rollout On-Policy Distillation (MOPD), a peer-conditioned distillation framework that uses the student's local rollout group to construct more informative teacher signals. MOPD conditions the teacher on both successful and failed peer rollouts: successes provide positive evidence for valid reasoning patterns, while failures provide structured negative evidence about plausible mistakes to avoid. We study two peer-context constructions: positive peer imitation and contrastive success-failure conditioning. Experiments on competitive programming, mathematical reasoning, scientific question answering, and tool-use benchmarks show that MOPD consistently improves over standard on-policy baselines. Further teacher-signal analysis shows that mixed success-failure contexts better align teacher scores with verifier rewards, indicating that the gains arise from more faithful, instance-adaptive supervision. These results indicate that effective on-policy distillation should exploit the student's multi-rollout trial-and-error behavior rather than treating rollouts as isolated samples.

MarkTune: Improving the Quality-Detectability Trade-off in Open-Weight LLM WatermarkingYizhou Zhao, Zhiwei Steven Wu, Adam Block
Watermarking aims to embed hidden signals in generated text that can be reliably detected when given access to a secret key. Open-weight language models pose acute challenges for such watermarking schemes because the inference-time interventions that dominate contemporary approaches cannot be enforced once model weights are public. Existing watermaking techniques for open-weight models, such as the recently proposed GaussMark, typically rely on small modifications to model weights, which can yield signals detectable to those equipped with a secret key, but achieving detection power comparable to inference-time watermarks generally requires weight perturbations that noticeably reduce generation quality. We introduce MarkTune, a theoretically principled, on-policy fine-tuning framework that treats the GaussMark signal as a reward while simultaneously regularizing against degradation in text quality. We derive MarkTune as an improvement on GaussMark and demonstrate that MarkTune consistently improves the quality-detectability trade-off over GaussMark by steering finer-grained, watermark-aware weight updates within the model's representation space while preserving generation quality. Empirically, we show that MarkTune pushes the quality-detectability frontier of GaussMark close to that of inference-time watermarking, remains robust to paraphrasing and fine-tuning attacks, and exhibits strong generalization: a model fine-tuned on one dataset retains substantial watermark detection power on unseen datasets. Together, these results establish MarkTune as a general strategy for embedding robust, high-quality watermarks into open-weight LMs.

ConsistNav: Closing the Action Consistency Gap in Zero-Shot Object Navigation with Semantic Executive ControlHaosen Wang, Zhenyang Li, Yinqiang Zhang et al.
Zero-shot object navigation has advanced rapidly with open-vocabulary detectors, image--text models, and language-guided exploration. However, even after current methods detect a plausible target hypothesis, the agent may still oscillate between exploration and pursuit, or abandon the object near success. We identify this failure mode as an action consistency gap: semantic evidence is repeatedly reinterpreted at each step without persistent commitment across the episode. We introduce ConsistNav, a training-free zero-shot ObjectNav framework built around a semantic executive composed of three coordinated modules: Finite-State Executive Controller stages target pursuit through guarded semantic phases; Persistent Candidate Memory accumulates cross-frame target evidence into stable object hypotheses; and Stability-Aware Action Control suppresses rotational stagnation, ineffective pursuit, and unverified stopping. This design changes neither the detector nor the low-level planner; instead, it controls when semantic evidence should influence navigation and when it should be suppressed or revisited. We conduct extensive experiments on HM3D and MP3D, where ConsistNav achieves state-of-the-art results among compared zero-shot ObjectNav methods and improves SR by 11.4% and SPL by 7.9% over the controlled baseline on MP3D. Ablation studies and real-world deployment experiments further demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed executive mechanism.

Learning from the Tangram to Solve Mini Visual TasksYizhou Zhao, Liang Qiu, Pan Lu et al.
Current pre-training methods in computer vision focus on natural images in the daily-life context. However, abstract diagrams such as icons and symbols are common and important in the real world. This work is inspired by Tangram, a game that requires replicating an abstract pattern from seven dissected shapes. By recording human experience in solving tangram puzzles, we present the Tangram dataset and show that a pre-trained neural model on the Tangram helps solve some mini visual tasks based on low-resolution vision. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method generates intelligent solutions for aesthetic tasks such as folding clothes and evaluating room layouts. The pre-trained feature extractor can facilitate the convergence of few-shot learning tasks on human handwriting and improve the accuracy in identifying icons by their contours. RoboAlign-R1: Distilled Multimodal Reward Alignment for Robot Video World ModelsHao Wu, Yuqi Li, Yuan Gao et al.
Existing robot video world models are typically trained with low-level objectives such as reconstruction and perceptual similarity, which are poorly aligned with the capabilities that matter most for robot decision making, including instruction following, manipulation success, and physical plausibility. They also suffer from error accumulation in long-horizon autoregressive prediction. We present RoboAlign-R1, a framework that combines reward-aligned post-training with stabilized long-horizon inference for robot video world models. We construct RobotWorldBench, a benchmark of 10,000 annotated video-instruction pairs collected from four robot data sources, and train a multimodal teacher judge, RoboAlign-Judge, to provide fine-grained six-dimensional evaluation of generated videos. We then distill the teacher into a lightweight student reward model for efficient reinforcement-learning-based post-training. To reduce long-horizon rollout drift, we further introduce Sliding Window Re-encoding (SWR), a training-free inference strategy that periodically refreshes the generation context. Under our in-domain evaluation protocol, RoboAlign-R1 improves the aggregate six-dimension score by 10.1% over the strongest baseline, including gains of 7.5% on Manipulation Accuracy and 4.6% on Instruction Following; these ranking improvements are further supported by an external VLM-based cross-check and a blinded human study. Meanwhile, SWR improves long-horizon prediction quality with only about 1% additional latency, yielding a 2.8% gain in SSIM and a 9.8% reduction in LPIPS. Together, these results show that reward-aligned post-training and stabilized long-horizon decoding improve task consistency, physical realism, and long-horizon prediction quality in robot video world models.

MOSIV: Multi-Object System Identification from VideosChunjiang Liu, Xiaoyuan Wang, Qingran Lin et al.
We introduce the challenging problem of multi-object system identification from videos, for which prior methods are ill-suited due to their focus on single-object scenes or discrete material classification with a fixed set of material prototypes. To address this, we propose MOSIV, a new framework that directly optimizes for continuous, per-object material parameters using a differentiable simulator guided by geometric objectives derived from video. We also present a new synthetic benchmark with contact-rich, multi-object interactions to facilitate evaluation. On this benchmark, MOSIV substantially improves grounding accuracy and long-horizon simulation fidelity over adapted baselines, establishing it as a strong baseline for this new task. Our analysis shows that object-level fine-grained supervision and geometry-aligned objectives are critical for stable optimization in these complex, multi-object settings. Optimal Communication Rate of Secure Aggregation over Ring Networks with Pairwise KeysXiang Zhang, Han Yu, Zhou Li et al.
Information-theoretic topological secure aggregation (TSA)\cite{zhang2026information_regular} enables distributed users to compute neighborhood sums over arbitrary networks without revealing individual inputs, while remaining communication-efficient. It has broad applications, including secure model aggregation in decentralized federated learning (FL). Existing TSA formulations rely on arbitrarily correlated keys generated by a trusted key server, which introduces a single point of failure. In this paper, we instead study TSA with \tit{pairwise} secret keys, where each user pair $(i,j)$ shares an independent key $S_{i,j}$. Such keys can be established through inter-user communication, eliminating the need for a key server and improving robustness. Focusing on a ring topology with $K$ users, we characterize the minimum per-user communication rate: \tit{to securely compute one bit of the desired input sum, each user must send at least $1$ bit to its neighbors when $K=3,4$, and at least $2$ bits for all $K\ge 5$}. The higher rate in larger networks arises because each user must simultaneously satisfy two independent key-alignment constraints from its two neighborhoods, which cannot be resolved within a single broadcast symbol under pairwise key independence. We propose a linear pairwise-masking scheme that achieves these rates and prove its optimality via tight entropic converse bounds that exploit the dependency structure of the keys. Notably, for all $K\ge 4$, only a subset of the $\binom{K}{2}$ pairwise keys -- specifically, those between users at ring distance $2$ -- is sufficient to achieve optimality, revealing a nontrivial role of topological sparsity in secure aggregation.

Synergistic Global-space Camera and Human Reconstruction from VideosYizhou Zhao, Tuanfeng Y. Wang, Bhiksha Raj et al.
Remarkable strides have been made in reconstructing static scenes or human bodies from monocular videos. Yet, the two problems have largely been approached independently, without much synergy. Most visual SLAM methods can only reconstruct camera trajectories and scene structures up to scale, while most HMR methods reconstruct human meshes in metric scale but fall short in reasoning with cameras and scenes. This work introduces Synergistic Camera and Human Reconstruction (SynCHMR) to marry the best of both worlds. Specifically, we design Human-aware Metric SLAM to reconstruct metric-scale camera poses and scene point clouds using camera-frame HMR as a strong prior, addressing depth, scale, and dynamic ambiguities. Conditioning on the dense scene recovered, we further learn a Scene-aware SMPL Denoiser to enhance world-frame HMR by incorporating spatio-temporal coherency and dynamic scene constraints. HoliGS: Holistic Gaussian Splatting for Embodied View SynthesisXiaoyuan Wang, Yizhou Zhao, Botao Ye et al.
We propose HoliGS, a novel deformable Gaussian splatting framework that addresses embodied view synthesis from long monocular RGB videos. Unlike prior 4D Gaussian splatting and dynamic NeRF pipelines, which struggle with training overhead in minute-long captures, our method leverages invertible Gaussian Splatting deformation networks to reconstruct large-scale, dynamic environments accurately. Specifically, we decompose each scene into a static background plus time-varying objects, each represented by learned Gaussian primitives undergoing global rigid transformations, skeleton-driven articulation, and subtle non-rigid deformations via an invertible neural flow. This hierarchical warping strategy enables robust free-viewpoint novel-view rendering from various embodied camera trajectories by attaching Gaussians to a complete canonical foreground shape (\eg, egocentric or third-person follow), which may involve substantial viewpoint changes and interactions between multiple actors. Our experiments demonstrate that \ourmethod~ achieves superior reconstruction quality on challenging datasets while significantly reducing both training and rendering time compared to state-of-the-art monocular deformable NeRFs. Geometry Aware Operator Transformer as an Efficient and Accurate Neural Surrogate for PDEs on Arbitrary DomainsShizheng Wen, Arsh Kumbhat, Levi Lingsch et al.
The very challenging task of learning solution operators of PDEs on arbitrary domains accurately and efficiently is of vital importance to engineering and industrial simulations. Despite the existence of many operator learning algorithms to approximate such PDEs, we find that accurate models are not necessarily computationally efficient and vice versa. We address this issue by proposing a geometry aware operator transformer (GAOT) for learning PDEs on arbitrary domains. GAOT combines novel multiscale attentional graph neural operator encoders and decoders, together with geometry embeddings and (vision) transformer processors to accurately map information about the domain and the inputs into a robust approximation of the PDE solution. Multiple innovations in the implementation of GAOT also ensure computational efficiency and scalability. We demonstrate this significant gain in both accuracy and efficiency of GAOT over several baselines on a large number of learning tasks from a diverse set of PDEs, including achieving state of the art performance on three large scale three-dimensional industrial CFD datasets.

CryoCCD: Conditional Cycle-consistent Diffusion with Biophysical Modeling for Cryo-EM SynthesisRunmin Jiang, Genpei Zhang, Yuntian Yang et al. · cmu, harvard
Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has become a cornerstone of structural biology, enabling near-atomic resolution analysis of macromolecules through advanced computational methods. However, the development of cryo-EM processing tools is constrained by the scarcity of high-quality annotated datasets. Synthetic data generation offers a promising alternative, but existing approaches lack thorough biophysical modeling of heterogeneity and fail to reproduce the complex noise observed in real imaging. To address these limitations, we present CryoCCD, a synthesis framework that unifies versatile biophysical modeling with the first conditional cycle-consistent diffusion model tailored for cryo-EM. The biophysical engine provides multi-functional generation capabilities to capture authentic biological organization, and the diffusion model is enhanced with cycle consistency and mask-guided contrastive learning to ensure realistic noise while preserving structural fidelity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CryoCCD generates structurally faithful micrographs, enhances particle picking and pose estimation, as well as achieves superior performance over state-of-the-art baselines, while also generalizing effectively to held-out protein families.

Aligning Proteins and Language: A Foundation Model for Protein RetrievalQifeng Wu, Zhengzhe Liu, Han Zhu et al.
This paper aims to retrieve proteins with similar structures and semantics from large-scale protein dataset, facilitating the functional interpretation of protein structures derived by structural determination methods like cryo-Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM). Motivated by the recent progress of vision-language models (VLMs), we propose a CLIP-style framework for aligning 3D protein structures with functional annotations using contrastive learning. For model training, we propose a large-scale dataset of approximately 200,000 protein-caption pairs with rich functional descriptors. We evaluate our model in both in-domain and more challenging cross-database retrieval on Protein Data Bank (PDB) and Electron Microscopy Data Bank (EMDB) dataset, respectively. In both cases, our approach demonstrates promising zero-shot retrieval performance, highlighting the potential of multimodal foundation models for structure-function understanding in protein biology.

Point Resampling and Ray Transformation Aid to Editable NeRF ModelsZhenyang Li, Zilong Chen, Feifan Qu et al.
In NeRF-aided editing tasks, object movement presents difficulties in supervision generation due to the introduction of variability in object positions. Moreover, the removal operations of certain scene objects often lead to empty regions, presenting challenges for NeRF models in inpainting them effectively. We propose an implicit ray transformation strategy, allowing for direct manipulation of the 3D object's pose by operating on the neural-point in NeRF rays. To address the challenge of inpainting potential empty regions, we present a plug-and-play inpainting module, dubbed differentiable neural-point resampling (DNR), which interpolates those regions in 3D space at the original ray locations within the implicit space, thereby facilitating object removal & scene inpainting tasks. Importantly, employing DNR effectively narrows the gap between ground truth and predicted implicit features, potentially increasing the mutual information (MI) of the features across rays. Then, we leverage DNR and ray transformation to construct a point-based editable NeRF pipeline PR^2T-NeRF. Results primarily evaluated on 3D object removal & inpainting tasks indicate that our pipeline achieves state-of-the-art performance. In addition, our pipeline supports high-quality rendering visualization for diverse editing operations without necessitating extra supervision.

MASIV: Toward Material-Agnostic System Identification from VideosYizhou Zhao, Haoyu Chen, Chunjiang Liu et al.
System identification from videos aims to recover object geometry and governing physical laws. Existing methods integrate differentiable rendering with simulation but rely on predefined material priors, limiting their ability to handle unknown ones. We introduce MASIV, the first vision-based framework for material-agnostic system identification. Unlike existing approaches that depend on hand-crafted constitutive laws, MASIV employs learnable neural constitutive models, inferring object dynamics without assuming a scene-specific material prior. However, the absence of full particle state information imposes unique challenges, leading to unstable optimization and physically implausible behaviors. To address this, we introduce dense geometric guidance by reconstructing continuum particle trajectories, providing temporally rich motion constraints beyond sparse visual cues. Comprehensive experiments show that MASIV achieves state-of-the-art performance in geometric accuracy, rendering quality, and generalization ability.

Learning to Act with Affordance-Aware Multimodal Neural SLAMZhiwei Jia, Kaixiang Lin, Yizhou Zhao et al.
Recent years have witnessed an emerging paradigm shift toward embodied artificial intelligence, in which an agent must learn to solve challenging tasks by interacting with its environment. There are several challenges in solving embodied multimodal tasks, including long-horizon planning, vision-and-language grounding, and efficient exploration. We focus on a critical bottleneck, namely the performance of planning and navigation. To tackle this challenge, we propose a Neural SLAM approach that, for the first time, utilizes several modalities for exploration, predicts an affordance-aware semantic map, and plans over it at the same time. This significantly improves exploration efficiency, leads to robust long-horizon planning, and enables effective vision-and-language grounding. With the proposed Affordance-aware Multimodal Neural SLAM (AMSLAM) approach, we obtain more than 40% improvement over prior published work on the ALFRED benchmark and set a new state-of-the-art generalization performance at a success rate of 23.48% on the test unseen scenes.

ValueNet: A New Dataset for Human Value Driven Dialogue SystemLiang Qiu, Yizhou Zhao, Jinchao Li et al.
Building a socially intelligent agent involves many challenges, one of which is to teach the agent to speak guided by its value like a human. However, value-driven chatbots are still understudied in the area of dialogue systems. Most existing datasets focus on commonsense reasoning or social norm modeling. In this work, we present a new large-scale human value dataset called ValueNet, which contains human attitudes on 21,374 text scenarios. The dataset is organized in ten dimensions that conform to the basic human value theory in intercultural research. We further develop a Transformer-based value regression model on ValueNet to learn the utility distribution. Comprehensive empirical results show that the learned value model could benefit a wide range of dialogue tasks. For example, by teaching a generative agent with reinforcement learning and the rewards from the value model, our method attains state-of-the-art performance on the personalized dialog generation dataset: Persona-Chat. With values as additional features, existing emotion recognition models enable capturing rich human emotions in the context, which further improves the empathetic response generation performance in the EmpatheticDialogues dataset. To the best of our knowledge, ValueNet is the first large-scale text dataset for human value modeling, and we are the first one trying to incorporate a value model into emotionally intelligent dialogue systems. LUMINOUS: Indoor Scene Generation for Embodied AI ChallengesYizhou Zhao, Kaixiang Lin, Zhiwei Jia et al.
Learning-based methods for training embodied agents typically require a large number of high-quality scenes that contain realistic layouts and support meaningful interactions. However, current simulators for Embodied AI (EAI) challenges only provide simulated indoor scenes with a limited number of layouts. This paper presents Luminous, the first research framework that employs state-of-the-art indoor scene synthesis algorithms to generate large-scale simulated scenes for Embodied AI challenges. Further, we automatically and quantitatively evaluate the quality of generated indoor scenes via their ability to support complex household tasks. Luminous incorporates a novel scene generation algorithm (Constrained Stochastic Scene Generation (CSSG)), which achieves competitive performance with human-designed scenes. Within Luminous, the EAI task executor, task instruction generation module, and video rendering toolkit can collectively generate a massive multimodal dataset of new scenes for the training and evaluation of Embodied AI agents. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the data generated by Luminous, enabling the comprehensive assessment of embodied agents on generalization and robustness.

IconQA: A New Benchmark for Abstract Diagram Understanding and Visual Language ReasoningPan Lu, Liang Qiu, Jiaqi Chen et al.
Current visual question answering (VQA) tasks mainly consider answering human-annotated questions for natural images. However, aside from natural images, abstract diagrams with semantic richness are still understudied in visual understanding and reasoning research. In this work, we introduce a new challenge of Icon Question Answering (IconQA) with the goal of answering a question in an icon image context. We release IconQA, a large-scale dataset that consists of 107,439 questions and three sub-tasks: multi-image-choice, multi-text-choice, and filling-in-the-blank. The IconQA dataset is inspired by real-world diagram word problems that highlight the importance of abstract diagram understanding and comprehensive cognitive reasoning. Thus, IconQA requires not only perception skills like object recognition and text understanding, but also diverse cognitive reasoning skills, such as geometric reasoning, commonsense reasoning, and arithmetic reasoning. To facilitate potential IconQA models to learn semantic representations for icon images, we further release an icon dataset Icon645 which contains 645,687 colored icons on 377 classes. We conduct extensive user studies and blind experiments and reproduce a wide range of advanced VQA methods to benchmark the IconQA task. Also, we develop a strong IconQA baseline Patch-TRM that applies a pyramid cross-modal Transformer with input diagram embeddings pre-trained on the icon dataset. STAR: Sparse Transformer-based Action RecognitionFeng Shi, Chonghan Lee, Liang Qiu et al.
The cognitive system for human action and behavior has evolved into a deep learning regime, and especially the advent of Graph Convolution Networks has transformed the field in recent years. However, previous works have mainly focused on over-parameterized and complex models based on dense graph convolution networks, resulting in low efficiency in training and inference. Meanwhile, the Transformer architecture-based model has not yet been well explored for cognitive application in human action and behavior estimation. This work proposes a novel skeleton-based human action recognition model with sparse attention on the spatial dimension and segmented linear attention on the temporal dimension of data. Our model can also process the variable length of video clips grouped as a single batch. Experiments show that our model can achieve comparable performance while utilizing much less trainable parameters and achieve high speed in training and inference. Experiments show that our model achieves 4~18x speedup and 1/7~1/15 model size compared with the baseline models at competitive accuracy.

SocAoG: Incremental Graph Parsing for Social Relation Inference in DialoguesLiang Qiu, Yuan Liang, Yizhou Zhao et al.
Inferring social relations from dialogues is vital for building emotionally intelligent robots to interpret human language better and act accordingly. We model the social network as an And-or Graph, named SocAoG, for the consistency of relations among a group and leveraging attributes as inference cues. Moreover, we formulate a sequential structure prediction task, and propose an $α$-$β$-$γ$ strategy to incrementally parse SocAoG for the dynamic inference upon any incoming utterance: (i) an $α$ process predicting attributes and relations conditioned on the semantics of dialogues, (ii) a $β$ process updating the social relations based on related attributes, and (iii) a $γ$ process updating individual's attributes based on interpersonal social relations. Empirical results on DialogRE and MovieGraph show that our model infers social relations more accurately than the state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the ablation study shows the three processes complement each other, and the case study demonstrates the dynamic relational inference.

Towards Socially Intelligent Agents with Mental State Transition and Human UtilityLiang Qiu, Yizhou Zhao, Yuan Liang et al.
Building a socially intelligent agent involves many challenges. One of which is to track the agent's mental state transition and teach the agent to make decisions guided by its value like a human. Towards this end, we propose to incorporate mental state simulation and value modeling into dialogue agents. First, we build a hybrid mental state parser that extracts information from both the dialogue and event observations and maintains a graphical representation of the agent's mind; Meanwhile, the transformer-based value model learns human preferences from the human value dataset, ValueNet. Empirical results show that the proposed model attains state-of-the-art performance on the dialogue/action/emotion prediction task in the fantasy text-adventure game dataset, LIGHT. We also show example cases to demonstrate: (i) how the proposed mental state parser can assist the agent's decision by grounding on the context like locations and objects, and (ii) how the value model can help the agent make decisions based on its personal priorities.

In the robust secure aggregation problem, a server wishes to learn and only learn the sum of the inputs of a number of users while some users may drop out (i.e., may not respond). The identity of the dropped users is not known a priori and the server needs to securely recover the sum of the remaining surviving users. We consider the following minimal two-round model of secure aggregation. Over the first round, any set of no fewer than $U$ users out of $K$ users respond to the server and the server wants to learn the sum of the inputs of all responding users. The remaining users are viewed as dropped. Over the second round, any set of no fewer than $U$ users of the surviving users respond (i.e., dropouts are still possible over the second round) and from the information obtained from the surviving users over the two rounds, the server can decode the desired sum. The security constraint is that even if the server colludes with any $T$ users and the messages from the dropped users are received by the server (e.g., delayed packets), the server is not able to infer any additional information beyond the sum in the information theoretic sense. For this information theoretic secure aggregation problem, we characterize the optimal communication cost. When $U \leq T$, secure aggregation is not feasible, and when $U > T$, to securely compute one symbol of the sum, the minimum number of symbols sent from each user to the server is $1$ over the first round, and $1/(U-T)$ over the second round.

We generalize the existing principle of the maximum Shannon entropy in reinforcement learning (RL) to weighted entropy by characterizing the state-action pairs with some qualitative weights, which can be connected with prior knowledge, experience replay, and evolution process of the policy. We propose an algorithm motivated for self-balancing exploration with the introduced weight function, which leads to state-of-the-art performance on Mujoco tasks despite its simplicity in implementation.

Vertical-Horizontal Structured Attention for Generating Music with ChordsYizhou Zhao, Liang Qiu, Wensi Ai et al.
In this paper, we propose a lightweight music-generating model based on variational autoencoder (VAE) with structured attention. Generating music is different from generating text because the melodies with chords give listeners distinguished polyphonic feelings. In a piece of music, a chord consisting of multiple notes comes from either the mixture of multiple instruments or the combination of multiple keys of a single instrument. We focus our study on the latter. Our model captures not only the temporal relations along time but the structure relations between keys. Experimental results show that our model has a better performance than baseline MusicVAE in capturing notes in a chord. Besides, our method accords with music theory since it maintains the configuration of the circle of fifths, distinguishes major and minor keys from interval vectors, and manifests meaningful structures between music phrases.

Structured Attention for Unsupervised Dialogue Structure InductionLiang Qiu, Yizhou Zhao, Weiyan Shi et al.
Inducing a meaningful structural representation from one or a set of dialogues is a crucial but challenging task in computational linguistics. Advancement made in this area is critical for dialogue system design and discourse analysis. It can also be extended to solve grammatical inference. In this work, we propose to incorporate structured attention layers into a Variational Recurrent Neural Network (VRNN) model with discrete latent states to learn dialogue structure in an unsupervised fashion. Compared to a vanilla VRNN, structured attention enables a model to focus on different parts of the source sentence embeddings while enforcing a structural inductive bias. Experiments show that on two-party dialogue datasets, VRNN with structured attention learns semantic structures that are similar to templates used to generate this dialogue corpus. While on multi-party dialogue datasets, our model learns an interactive structure demonstrating its capability of distinguishing speakers or addresses, automatically disentangling dialogues without explicit human annotation.

Joint Mind Modeling for Explanation Generation in Complex Human-Robot Collaborative TasksXiaofeng Gao, Ran Gong, Yizhou Zhao et al.
Human collaborators can effectively communicate with their partners to finish a common task by inferring each other's mental states (e.g., goals, beliefs, and desires). Such mind-aware communication minimizes the discrepancy among collaborators' mental states, and is crucial to the success in human ad-hoc teaming. We believe that robots collaborating with human users should demonstrate similar pedagogic behavior. Thus, in this paper, we propose a novel explainable AI (XAI) framework for achieving human-like communication in human-robot collaborations, where the robot builds a hierarchical mind model of the human user and generates explanations of its own mind as a form of communications based on its online Bayesian inference of the user's mental state. To evaluate our framework, we conduct a user study on a real-time human-robot cooking task. Experimental results show that the generated explanations of our approach significantly improves the collaboration performance and user perception of the robot. Expand-and-Randomize: An Algebraic Approach to Secure ComputationYizhou Zhao, Hua Sun
We consider the secure computation problem in a minimal model, where Alice and Bob each holds an input and wish to securely compute a function of their inputs at Carol without revealing any additional information about the inputs. For this minimal secure computation problem, we propose a novel coding scheme built from two steps. First, the function to be computed is expanded such that it can be recovered while additional information might be leaked. Second, a randomization step is applied to the expanded function such that the leaked information is protected. We implement this expand-and-randomize coding scheme with two algebraic structures - the finite field and the modulo ring of integers, where the expansion step is realized with the addition operation and the randomization step is realized with the multiplication operation over the respective algebraic structures.
