ECL: Class-Enhancement Contrastive Learning for Long-tailed Skin Lesion ClassificationYilan Zhang, Jianqi Chen, Ke Wang et al.
Skin image datasets often suffer from imbalanced data distribution, exacerbating the difficulty of computer-aided skin disease diagnosis. Some recent works exploit supervised contrastive learning (SCL) for this long-tailed challenge. Despite achieving significant performance, these SCL-based methods focus more on head classes, yet ignoring the utilization of information in tail classes. In this paper, we propose class-Enhancement Contrastive Learning (ECL), which enriches the information of minority classes and treats different classes equally. For information enhancement, we design a hybrid-proxy model to generate class-dependent proxies and propose a cycle update strategy for parameters optimization. A balanced-hybrid-proxy loss is designed to exploit relations between samples and proxies with different classes treated equally. Taking both "imbalanced data" and "imbalanced diagnosis difficulty" into account, we further present a balanced-weighted cross-entropy loss following curriculum learning schedule. Experimental results on the classification of imbalanced skin lesion data have demonstrated the superiority and effectiveness of our method.
FastFace: Fast-converging Scheduler for Large-scale Face Recognition Training with One GPUXueyuan Gong, Zhiquan Liu, Yain-Whar Si et al.
Computing power has evolved into a foundational and indispensable resource in the area of deep learning, particularly in tasks such as Face Recognition (FR) model training on large-scale datasets, where multiple GPUs are often a necessity. Recognizing this challenge, some FR methods have started exploring ways to compress the fully-connected layer in FR models. Unlike other approaches, our observations reveal that without prompt scheduling of the learning rate (LR) during FR model training, the loss curve tends to exhibit numerous stationary subsequences. To address this issue, we introduce a novel LR scheduler leveraging Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and Haar Convolutional Kernel (HCK) to eliminate stationary subsequences, resulting in a significant reduction in converging time. However, the proposed scheduler incurs a considerable computational overhead due to its time complexity. To overcome this limitation, we propose FastFace, a fast-converging scheduler with negligible time complexity, i.e. O(1) per iteration, during training. In practice, FastFace is able to accelerate FR model training to a quarter of its original time without sacrificing more than 1% accuracy, making large-scale FR training feasible even with just one single GPU in terms of both time and space complexity. Extensive experiments validate the efficiency and effectiveness of FastFace. The code is publicly available at: https://github.com/amoonfana/FastFace

Adaptation and Fine-tuning with TabPFN for Travelling Salesman ProblemNguyen Gia Hien Vu, Yifan Tang, Rey Lim et al.
Tabular Prior-Data Fitted Network (TabPFN) is a foundation model designed for small to medium-sized tabular data, which has attracted much attention recently. This paper investigates the application of TabPFN in Combinatorial Optimization (CO) problems. The aim is to lessen challenges in time and data-intensive training requirements often observed in using traditional methods including exact and heuristic algorithms, Machine Learning (ML)-based models, to solve CO problems. Proposing possibly the first ever application of TabPFN for such a purpose, we adapt and fine-tune the TabPFN model to solve the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP), one of the most well-known CO problems. Specifically, we adopt the node-based approach and the node-predicting adaptation strategy to construct the entire TSP route. Our evaluation with varying instance sizes confirms that TabPFN requires minimal training, adapts to TSP using a single sample, performs better generalization across varying TSP instance sizes, and reduces performance degradation. Furthermore, the training process with adaptation and fine-tuning is completed within minutes. The methodology leads to strong solution quality even without post-processing and achieves performance comparable to other models with post-processing refinement. Our findings suggest that the TabPFN model is a promising approach to solve structured and CO problems efficiently under training resource constraints and rapid deployment requirements.
ORCHID: A Chinese Debate Corpus for Target-Independent Stance Detection and Argumentative Dialogue SummarizationXiutian Zhao, Ke Wang, Wei Peng
Dialogue agents have been receiving increasing attention for years, and this trend has been further boosted by the recent progress of large language models (LLMs). Stance detection and dialogue summarization are two core tasks of dialogue agents in application scenarios that involve argumentative dialogues. However, research on these tasks is limited by the insufficiency of public datasets, especially for non-English languages. To address this language resource gap in Chinese, we present ORCHID (Oral Chinese Debate), the first Chinese dataset for benchmarking target-independent stance detection and debate summarization. Our dataset consists of 1,218 real-world debates that were conducted in Chinese on 476 unique topics, containing 2,436 stance-specific summaries and 14,133 fully annotated utterances. Besides providing a versatile testbed for future research, we also conduct an empirical study on the dataset and propose an integrated task. The results show the challenging nature of the dataset and suggest a potential of incorporating stance detection in summarization for argumentative dialogue.

Initializing Perturbations in Multiple Directions for Fast Adversarial TrainingXunguang Wang, Ship Peng Xu, Eric Ke Wang
Recent developments in the filed of Deep Learning have demonstrated that Deep Neural Networks(DNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial examples. Specifically, in image classification, an adversarial example can fool the well trained deep neural networks by adding barely imperceptible perturbations to clean images. Adversarial Training, one of the most direct and effective methods, minimizes the losses of perturbed-data to learn robust deep networks against adversarial attacks. It has been proven that using the fast gradient sign method (FGSM) can achieve Fast Adversarial Training. However, FGSM-based adversarial training may finally obtain a failed model because of overfitting to FGSM samples. In this paper, we proposed the Diversified Initialized Perturbations Adversarial Training (DIP-FAT) which involves seeking the initialization of the perturbation via enlarging the output distances of the target model in a random directions. Due to the diversity of random directions, the embedded fast adversarial training using FGSM increases the information from the adversary and reduces the possibility of overfitting. In addition to preventing overfitting, the extensive results show that our proposed DIP-FAT technique can also improve the accuracy of the clean data. The biggest advantage of DIP-FAT method: achieving the best banlance among clean-data, perturbed-data and efficiency.
