Multimodal Data Curation Through Ranked RetrievalPratyush Muthukumar, Harshil Kotamreddy, Sarah Amiraslani et al.
Shared embedding spaces are widely used for multimodal search and data curation. In practice, two problems often limit how well this works. First, embeddings can reflect modality more than meaning, so examples cluster by input type even when the underlying content matches. Second, the paired supervision used to train these spaces is often noisy. When we blend many heterogeneous, human-labeled datasets, these issues reinforce each other and degrade cross-modal retrieval. We present a framework that improves alignment by acting on both the training pairs and the embedding model. Symmetric Nucleus Subsampling (SNS) refines training pairs by trimming raw inputs and annotations to the portions that best support each other. Expert Embedding Engine (EEE) combines complementary embedding experts using a learned projection network, together with a bias-aware objective that reduces modality-driven separation in the embedding space. We demonstrate that this approach collapses the modality gap by over 90% on average vs base embedding experts and is a strong data curator, with datablends from our method outperforming stratified sampling and traditional curation baselines in downstream model performance.

Semi Supervised Meta Learning for Spatiotemporal LearningFaraz Waseem, Pratyush Muthukumar
We approached the goal of applying meta-learning to self-supervised masked autoencoders for spatiotemporal learning in three steps. Broadly, we seek to understand the impact of applying meta-learning to existing state-of-the-art representation learning architectures. Thus, we test spatiotemporal learning through: a meta-learning architecture only, a representation learning architecture only, and an architecture applying representation learning alongside a meta learning architecture. We utilize the Memory Augmented Neural Network (MANN) architecture to apply meta-learning to our framework. Specifically, we first experiment with applying a pre-trained MAE and fine-tuning on our small-scale spatiotemporal dataset for video reconstruction tasks. Next, we experiment with training an MAE encoder and applying a classification head for action classification tasks. Finally, we experiment with applying a pre-trained MAE and fine-tune with MANN backbone for action classification tasks.

Generative Adversarial Imitation Learning for Empathy-based AIPratyush Muthukumar, Karishma Muthukumar, Deepan Muthirayan et al.
Generative adversarial imitation learning (GAIL) is a model-free algorithm that has been shown to provide strong results in imitating complex behaviors in high-dimensional environments. In this paper, we utilize the GAIL model for text generation to develop empathy-based context-aware conversational AI. Our model uses an expert trajectory of empathetic prompt-response dialogues which can accurately exhibit the correct empathetic emotion when generating a response. The Generator of the GAIL model uses the GPT-2 sequential pre-trained language model trained on 117 million parameters from 40 GB of internet data. We propose a novel application of an approach used in transfer learning to fine tune the GPT-2 model in order to generate concise, user-specific empathetic responses validated against the Discriminator. Our novel GAIL model utilizes a sentiment analysis history-based reinforcement learning approach to empathetically respond to human interactions in a personalized manner. We find that our model's response scores on various human-generated prompts collected from the Facebook Empathetic Dialogues dataset outperform baseline counterparts. Moreover, our model improves upon various history-based conversational AI models developed recently, as our model's performance over a sustained conversation of 3 or more interactions outperform similar conversational AI models.

A Stochastic Time Series Model for Predicting Financial Trends using NLPPratyush Muthukumar, Jie Zhong
Stock price forecasting is a highly complex and vitally important field of research. Recent advancements in deep neural network technology allow researchers to develop highly accurate models to predict financial trends. We propose a novel deep learning model called ST-GAN, or Stochastic Time-series Generative Adversarial Network, that analyzes both financial news texts and financial numerical data to predict stock trends. We utilize cutting-edge technology like the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to learn the correlations among textual and numerical data over time. We develop a new method of training a time-series GAN directly using the learned representations of Naive Bayes' sentiment analysis on financial text data alongside technical indicators from numerical data. Our experimental results show significant improvement over various existing models and prior research on deep neural networks for stock price forecasting.
