Grasp Transfer based on Self-Aligning Implicit Representations of Local SurfacesAhmet Tekden, Marc Peter Deisenroth, Yasemin Bekiroglu
Objects we interact with and manipulate often share similar parts, such as handles, that allow us to transfer our actions flexibly due to their shared functionality. This work addresses the problem of transferring a grasp experience or a demonstration to a novel object that shares shape similarities with objects the robot has previously encountered. Existing approaches for solving this problem are typically restricted to a specific object category or a parametric shape. Our approach, however, can transfer grasps associated with implicit models of local surfaces shared across object categories. Specifically, we employ a single expert grasp demonstration to learn an implicit local surface representation model from a small dataset of object meshes. At inference time, this model is used to transfer grasps to novel objects by identifying the most geometrically similar surfaces to the one on which the expert grasp is demonstrated. Our model is trained entirely in simulation and is evaluated on simulated and real-world objects that are not seen during training. Evaluations indicate that grasp transfer to unseen object categories using this approach can be successfully performed both in simulation and real-world experiments. The simulation results also show that the proposed approach leads to better spatial precision and grasp accuracy compared to a baseline approach.

Dynamical systems (DS) methods for Learning-from-Demonstration (LfD) provide stable, continuous policies from few demonstrations. First-order dynamical systems (DS) are effective for many point-to-point and periodic tasks, as long as a unique velocity is defined for each state. For tasks with intersections (e.g., drawing an "8"), extensions such as second-order dynamics or phase variables are often used. However, by incorporating velocity, second-order models become sensitive to disturbances near intersections, as velocity is used to disambiguate motion direction. Moreover, this disambiguation may fail when nearly identical position-velocity pairs correspond to different onward motions. In contrast, phase-based methods rely on open-loop time or phase variables, which limit their ability to recover after perturbations. We introduce Phase-varying Neural Potential Functions (PNPF), an LfD framework that conditions a potential function on a phase variable which is estimated directly from state progression, rather than on open-loop temporal inputs. This phase variable allows the system to handle state revisits, while the learned potential function generates local vector fields for reactive and stable control. PNPF generalizes effectively across point-to-point, periodic, and full 6D motion tasks, outperforms existing baselines on trajectories with intersections, and demonstrates robust performance in real-time robotic manipulation under external disturbances.

A Unifying Variational Framework for Gaussian Process Motion PlanningLucas Cosier, Rares Iordan, Sicelukwanda Zwane et al.
To control how a robot moves, motion planning algorithms must compute paths in high-dimensional state spaces while accounting for physical constraints related to motors and joints, generating smooth and stable motions, avoiding obstacles, and preventing collisions. A motion planning algorithm must therefore balance competing demands, and should ideally incorporate uncertainty to handle noise, model errors, and facilitate deployment in complex environments. To address these issues, we introduce a framework for robot motion planning based on variational Gaussian processes, which unifies and generalizes various probabilistic-inference-based motion planning algorithms, and connects them with optimization-based planners. Our framework provides a principled and flexible way to incorporate equality-based, inequality-based, and soft motion-planning constraints during end-to-end training, is straightforward to implement, and provides both interval-based and Monte-Carlo-based uncertainty estimates. We conduct experiments using different environments and robots, comparing against baseline approaches based on the feasibility of the planned paths, and obstacle avoidance quality. Results show that our proposed approach yields a good balance between success rates and path quality.

DURableVS: Data-efficient Unsupervised Recalibrating Visual Servoing via online learning in a structured generative modelNishad Gothoskar, Miguel Lázaro-Gredilla, Yasemin Bekiroglu et al.
Visual servoing enables robotic systems to perform accurate closed-loop control, which is required in many applications. However, existing methods either require precise calibration of the robot kinematic model and cameras or use neural architectures that require large amounts of data to train. In this work, we present a method for unsupervised learning of visual servoing that does not require any prior calibration and is extremely data-efficient. Our key insight is that visual servoing does not depend on identifying the veridical kinematic and camera parameters, but instead only on an accurate generative model of image feature observations from the joint positions of the robot. We demonstrate that with our model architecture and learning algorithm, we can consistently learn accurate models from less than 50 training samples (which amounts to less than 1 min of unsupervised data collection), and that such data-efficient learning is not possible with standard neural architectures. Further, we show that by using the generative model in the loop and learning online, we can enable a robotic system to recover from calibration errors and to detect and quickly adapt to possibly unexpected changes in the robot-camera system (e.g. bumped camera, new objects).

Simultaneous Tactile Exploration and Grasp Refinement for Unknown ObjectsCristiana de Farias, Naresh Marturi, Rustam Stolkin et al.
This paper addresses the problem of simultaneously exploring an unknown object to model its shape, using tactile sensors on robotic fingers, while also improving finger placement to optimise grasp stability. In many situations, a robot will have only a partial camera view of the near side of an observed object, for which the far side remains occluded. We show how an initial grasp attempt, based on an initial guess of the overall object shape, yields tactile glances of the far side of the object which enable the shape estimate and consequently the successive grasps to be improved. We propose a grasp exploration approach using a probabilistic representation of shape, based on Gaussian Process Implicit Surfaces. This representation enables initial partial vision data to be augmented with additional data from successive tactile glances. This is combined with a probabilistic estimate of grasp quality to refine grasp configurations. When choosing the next set of finger placements, a bi-objective optimisation method is used to mutually maximise grasp quality and improve shape representation during successive grasp attempts. Experimental results show that the proposed approach yields stable grasp configurations more efficiently than a baseline method, while also yielding improved shape estimate of the grasped object.

We introduce a novel formulation for incorporating visual feedback in controlling robots. We define a generative model from actions to image observations of features on the end-effector. Inference in the model allows us to infer the robot state corresponding to target locations of the features. This, in turn, guides motion of the robot and allows for matching the target locations of the features in significantly fewer steps than state-of-the-art visual servoing methods. The training procedure for our model enables effective learning of the kinematics, feature structure, and camera parameters, simultaneously. This can be done with no prior information about the robot, structure, and cameras that observe it. Learning is done sample-efficiently and shows strong generalization to test data. Since our formulation is modular, we can modify components of our setup, like cameras and objects, and relearn them quickly online. Our method can handle noise in the observed state and noise in the controllers that we interact with. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by executing grasping and tight-fit insertions on robots with inaccurate controllers.

In this work we study the problem of exploring surfaces and building compact 3D representations of the environment surrounding a robot through active perception. We propose an online probabilistic framework that merges visual and tactile measurements using Gaussian Random Field and Gaussian Process Implicit Surfaces. The system investigates incomplete point clouds in order to find a small set of regions of interest which are then physically explored with a robotic arm equipped with tactile sensors. We show experimental results obtained using a PrimeSense camera, a Kinova Jaco2 robotic arm and Optoforce sensors on different scenarios. We then demonstrate how to use the online framework for object detection and terrain classification.

CapriDB - Capture, Print, Innovate: A Low-Cost Pipeline and Database for Reproducible Manipulation ResearchFlorian T. Pokorny, Yasemin Bekiroglu, Karl Pauwels et al.
We present a novel approach and database which combines the inexpensive generation of 3D object models via monocular or RGB-D camera images with 3D printing and a state of the art object tracking algorithm. Unlike recent efforts towards the creation of 3D object databases for robotics, our approach does not require expensive and controlled 3D scanning setups and enables anyone with a camera to scan, print and track complex objects for manipulation research. The proposed approach results in highly detailed mesh models whose 3D printed replicas are at times difficult to distinguish from the original. A key motivation for utilizing 3D printed objects is the ability to precisely control and vary object properties such as the mass distribution and size in the 3D printing process to obtain reproducible conditions for robotic manipulation research. We present CapriDB - an extensible database resulting from this approach containing initially 40 textured and 3D printable mesh models together with tracking features to facilitate the adoption of the proposed approach.
