No Saved Kaleidosope: an 100% Jitted Neural Network Coding Language with Pythonic Syntax

We developed a jitted compiler for training Artificial Neural Networks using C++, LLVM and Cuda. It features object-oriented characteristics, strong typing, parallel workers for data pre-processing, pythonic syntax for expressions, PyTorch like model declaration and Automatic Differentiation. We implement the mechanisms of cache and pooling in order to manage VRAM, cuBLAS for high performance matrix multiplication and cuDNN for convolutional layers. Our experiments with Residual Convolutional Neural Networks on ImageNet, we reach similar speed but degraded performance. Also, the GRU network experiments show similar accuracy, but our compiler have degraded speed in that task. However, our compiler demonstrates promising results at the CIFAR-10 benchmark, in which we reach the same performance and about the same speed as PyTorch. Yin Yang Convolutional Nets: Image Manifold Extraction by the Analysis of Opposites

Computer vision in general presented several advances such as training optimizations, new architectures (pure attention, efficient block, vision language models, generative models, among others). This have improved performance in several tasks such as classification, and others. However, the majority of these models focus on modifications that are taking distance from realistic neuroscientific approaches related to the brain. In this work, we adopt a more bio-inspired approach and present the Yin Yang Convolutional Network, an architecture that extracts visual manifold, its blocks are intended to separate analysis of colors and forms at its initial layers, simulating occipital lobe's operations. Our results shows that our architecture provides State-of-the-Art efficiency among low parameter architectures in the dataset CIFAR-10. Our first model reached 93.32\% test accuracy, 0.8\% more than the older SOTA in this category, while having 150k less parameters (726k in total). Our second model uses 52k parameters, losing only 3.86\% test accuracy. We also performed an analysis on ImageNet, where we reached 66.49\% validation accuracy with 1.6M parameters. ASR data augmentation in low-resource settings using cross-lingual multi-speaker TTS and cross-lingual voice conversion

We explore cross-lingual multi-speaker speech synthesis and cross-lingual voice conversion applied to data augmentation for automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems in low/medium-resource scenarios. Through extensive experiments, we show that our approach permits the application of speech synthesis and voice conversion to improve ASR systems using only one target-language speaker during model training. We also managed to close the gap between ASR models trained with synthesized versus human speech compared to other works that use many speakers. Finally, we show that it is possible to obtain promising ASR training results with our data augmentation method using only a single real speaker in a target language.

Deep Learning Brasil at ABSAPT 2022: Portuguese Transformer Ensemble Approaches

Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) is a task whose objective is to classify the individual sentiment polarity of all entities, called aspects, in a sentence. The task is composed of two subtasks: Aspect Term Extraction (ATE), identify all aspect terms in a sentence; and Sentiment Orientation Extraction (SOE), given a sentence and its aspect terms, the task is to determine the sentiment polarity of each aspect term (positive, negative or neutral). This article presents we present our participation in Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis in Portuguese (ABSAPT) 2022 at IberLEF 2022. We submitted the best performing systems, achieving new state-of-the-art results on both subtasks.

Tagarela - A Portuguese speech dataset from podcasts

Despite significant advances in speech processing, Portuguese remains under-resourced due to the scarcity of public, large-scale, and high-quality datasets. To address this gap, we present a new dataset, named TAGARELA, composed of over 8,972 hours of podcast audio, specifically curated for training automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech (TTS) models. Notably, its scale rivals English's GigaSpeech (10kh), enabling state-of-the-art Portuguese models. To ensure data quality, the corpus was subjected to an audio pre-processing pipeline and subsequently transcribed using a mixed strategy: we applied ASR models that were previously trained on high-fidelity transcriptions generated by proprietary APIs, ensuring a high level of initial accuracy. Finally, to validate the effectiveness of this new resource, we present ASR and TTS models trained exclusively on our dataset and evaluate their performance, demonstrating its potential to drive the development of more robust and natural speech technologies for Portuguese. CORAA: a large corpus of spontaneous and prepared speech manually validated for speech recognition in Brazilian Portuguese

Automatic Speech recognition (ASR) is a complex and challenging task. In recent years, there have been significant advances in the area. In particular, for the Brazilian Portuguese (BP) language, there were about 376 hours public available for ASR task until the second half of 2020. With the release of new datasets in early 2021, this number increased to 574 hours. The existing resources, however, are composed of audios containing only read and prepared speech. There is a lack of datasets including spontaneous speech, which are essential in different ASR applications. This paper presents CORAA (Corpus of Annotated Audios) v1. with 290.77 hours, a publicly available dataset for ASR in BP containing validated pairs (audio-transcription). CORAA also contains European Portuguese audios (4.69 hours). We also present a public ASR model based on Wav2Vec 2.0 XLSR-53 and fine-tuned over CORAA. Our model achieved a Word Error Rate of 24.18% on CORAA test set and 20.08% on Common Voice test set. When measuring the Character Error Rate, we obtained 11.02% and 6.34% for CORAA and Common Voice, respectively. CORAA corpora were assembled to both improve ASR models in BP with phenomena from spontaneous speech and motivate young researchers to start their studies on ASR for Portuguese. MARS-Gym: A Gym framework to model, train, and evaluate Recommender Systems for Marketplaces

Recommender Systems are especially challenging for marketplaces since they must maximize user satisfaction while maintaining the healthiness and fairness of such ecosystems. In this context, we observed a lack of resources to design, train, and evaluate agents that learn by interacting within these environments. For this matter, we propose MARS-Gym, an open-source framework to empower researchers and engineers to quickly build and evaluate Reinforcement Learning agents for recommendations in marketplaces. MARS-Gym addresses the whole development pipeline: data processing, model design and optimization, and multi-sided evaluation. We also provide the implementation of a diverse set of baseline agents, with a metrics-driven analysis of them in the Trivago marketplace dataset, to illustrate how to conduct a holistic assessment using the available metrics of recommendation, off-policy estimation, and fairness. With MARS-Gym, we expect to bridge the gap between academic research and production systems, as well as to facilitate the design of new algorithms and applications.

Evaluating OpenAI's Whisper ASR for Punctuation Prediction and Topic Modeling of life histories of the Museum of the Person

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems play a key role in applications involving human-machine interactions. Despite their importance, ASR models for the Portuguese language proposed in the last decade have limitations in relation to the correct identification of punctuation marks in automatic transcriptions, which hinder the use of transcriptions by other systems, models, and even by humans. However, recently Whisper ASR was proposed by OpenAI, a general-purpose speech recognition model that has generated great expectations in dealing with such limitations. This chapter presents the first study on the performance of Whisper for punctuation prediction in the Portuguese language. We present an experimental evaluation considering both theoretical aspects involving pausing points (comma) and complete ideas (exclamation, question, and fullstop), as well as practical aspects involving transcript-based topic modeling - an application dependent on punctuation marks for promising performance. We analyzed experimental results from videos of Museum of the Person, a virtual museum that aims to tell and preserve people's life histories, thus discussing the pros and cons of Whisper in a real-world scenario. Although our experiments indicate that Whisper achieves state-of-the-art results, we conclude that some punctuation marks require improvements, such as exclamation, semicolon and colon.

Brazilian Portuguese Speech Recognition Using Wav2vec 2.0

Deep learning techniques have been shown to be efficient in various tasks, especially in the development of speech recognition systems, that is, systems that aim to transcribe an audio sentence in a sequence of written words. Despite the progress in the area, speech recognition can still be considered difficult, especially for languages lacking available data, such as Brazilian Portuguese (BP). In this sense, this work presents the development of an public Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system using only open available audio data, from the fine-tuning of the Wav2vec 2.0 XLSR-53 model pre-trained in many languages, over BP data. The final model presents an average word error rate of 12.4% over 7 different datasets (10.5% when applying a language model). According to our knowledge, the obtained error is the lowest among open end-to-end (E2E) ASR models for BP.

SC-GlowTTS: an Efficient Zero-Shot Multi-Speaker Text-To-Speech Model

In this paper, we propose SC-GlowTTS: an efficient zero-shot multi-speaker text-to-speech model that improves similarity for speakers unseen during training. We propose a speaker-conditional architecture that explores a flow-based decoder that works in a zero-shot scenario. As text encoders, we explore a dilated residual convolutional-based encoder, gated convolutional-based encoder, and transformer-based encoder. Additionally, we have shown that adjusting a GAN-based vocoder for the spectrograms predicted by the TTS model on the training dataset can significantly improve the similarity and speech quality for new speakers. Our model converges using only 11 speakers, reaching state-of-the-art results for similarity with new speakers, as well as high speech quality.

Hybrid Model with Time Modeling for Sequential Recommender Systems

Deep learning based methods have been used successfully in recommender system problems. Approaches using recurrent neural networks, transformers, and attention mechanisms are useful to model users' long- and short-term preferences in sequential interactions. To explore different session-based recommendation solutions, Booking.com recently organized the WSDM WebTour 2021 Challenge, which aims to benchmark models to recommend the final city in a trip. This study presents our approach to this challenge. We conducted several experiments to test different state-of-the-art deep learning architectures for recommender systems. Further, we proposed some changes to Neural Attentive Recommendation Machine (NARM), adapted its architecture for the challenge objective, and implemented training approaches that can be used in any session-based model to improve accuracy. Our experimental result shows that the improved NARM outperforms all other state-of-the-art benchmark methods.

Deep Learning Brasil -- NLP at SemEval-2020 Task 9: Overview of Sentiment Analysis of Code-Mixed Tweets

In this paper, we describe a methodology to predict sentiment in code-mixed tweets (hindi-english). Our team called verissimo.manoel in CodaLab developed an approach based on an ensemble of four models (MultiFiT, BERT, ALBERT, and XLNET). The final classification algorithm was an ensemble of some predictions of all softmax values from these four models. This architecture was used and evaluated in the context of the SemEval 2020 challenge (task 9), and our system got 72.7% on the F1 score.

Improving Irregularly Sampled Time Series Learning with Dense Descriptors of Time

Supervised learning with irregularly sampled time series have been a challenge to Machine Learning methods due to the obstacle of dealing with irregular time intervals. Some papers introduced recently recurrent neural network models that deals with irregularity, but most of them rely on complex mechanisms to achieve a better performance. This work propose a novel method to represent timestamps (hours or dates) as dense vectors using sinusoidal functions, called Time Embeddings. As a data input method it and can be applied to most machine learning models. The method was evaluated with two predictive tasks from MIMIC III, a dataset of irregularly sampled time series of electronic health records. Our tests showed an improvement to LSTM-based and classical machine learning models, specially with very irregular data.

Predicting Diabetes Disease Evolution Using Financial Records and Recurrent Neural Networks

Managing patients with chronic diseases is a major and growing healthcare challenge in several countries. A chronic condition, such as diabetes, is an illness that lasts a long time and does not go away, and often leads to the patient's health gradually getting worse. While recent works involve raw electronic health record (EHR) from hospitals, this work uses only financial records from health plan providers (medical claims) to predict diabetes disease evolution with a self-attentive recurrent neural network. The use of financial data is due to the possibility of being an interface to international standards, as the records standard encodes medical procedures. The main goal was to assess high risk diabetics, so we predict records related to diabetes acute complications such as amputations and debridements, revascularization and hemodialysis. Our work succeeds to anticipate complications between 60 to 240 days with an area under ROC curve ranging from 0.81 to 0.94. In this paper we describe the first half of a work-in-progress developed within a health plan provider with ROC curve ranging from 0.81 to 0.83. This assessment will give healthcare providers the chance to intervene earlier and head off hospitalizations. We are aiming to deliver personalized predictions and personalized recommendations to individual patients, with the goal of improving outcomes and reducing costs
