LMMs-Eval: Reality Check on the Evaluation of Large Multimodal Models

The advances of large foundation models necessitate wide-coverage, low-cost, and zero-contamination benchmarks. Despite continuous exploration of language model evaluations, comprehensive studies on the evaluation of Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs) remain limited. In this work, we introduce LMMS-EVAL, a unified and standardized multimodal benchmark framework with over 50 tasks and more than 10 models to promote transparent and reproducible evaluations. Although LMMS-EVAL offers comprehensive coverage, we find it still falls short in achieving low cost and zero contamination. To approach this evaluation trilemma, we further introduce LMMS-EVAL LITE, a pruned evaluation toolkit that emphasizes both coverage and efficiency. Additionally, we present Multimodal LIVEBENCH that utilizes continuously updating news and online forums to assess models' generalization abilities in the wild, featuring a low-cost and zero-contamination evaluation approach. In summary, our work highlights the importance of considering the evaluation trilemma and provides practical solutions to navigate the trade-offs in evaluating large multi-modal models, paving the way for more effective and reliable benchmarking of LMMs. We opensource our codebase and maintain leaderboard of LIVEBENCH at https://github.com/EvolvingLMMs-Lab/lmms-eval and https://huggingface.co/spaces/lmms-lab/LiveBench.

Quality-constrained Entropy Maximization Policy Optimization for LLM Diversity

In many large language model (LLM) alignment applications, users expect not only high-quality outputs but also substantial diversity. However, existing methods often face a fundamental trade-off between these objectives: approaches that improve output quality tend to reduce diversity, while methods that increase diversity often do so at the expense of quality. In this work, we propose Quality-constrained Entropy Maximization Policy Optimization (QEMPO), a novel framework that enhances the diversity of LLM outputs while explicitly preserving output quality. QEMPO is grounded in a strong theoretical foundation: we derive a closed-form analytical solution that provably maximizes entropy-a principled measure of diversity-subject to a quality constraint, with guarantees on optimality under the defined objective. Leveraging this solution, QEMPO naturally supports both online and offline training settings. Empirical results demonstrate that QEMPO consistently improves output diversity without sacrificing quality, and in many cases yields gains in both dimensions compared to existing baselines, aligning with our theoretical guarantees.

LLaVA-OneVision: Easy Visual Task Transfer

We present LLaVA-OneVision, a family of open large multimodal models (LMMs) developed by consolidating our insights into data, models, and visual representations in the LLaVA-NeXT blog series. Our experimental results demonstrate that LLaVA-OneVision is the first single model that can simultaneously push the performance boundaries of open LMMs in three important computer vision scenarios: single-image, multi-image, and video scenarios. Importantly, the design of LLaVA-OneVision allows strong transfer learning across different modalities/scenarios, yielding new emerging capabilities. In particular, strong video understanding and cross-scenario capabilities are demonstrated through task transfer from images to videos.

Senses Wide Shut: A Representation-Action Gap in Omnimodal LLMs

When an omnimodal large language model accepts a question whose textual premise contradicts what it actually sees or hears, does the failure lie in perception or in action? Recent omnimodal models are positioned as perception-grounded agents that jointly process video, audio, and text, yet a basic form of grounding remains untested: catching a textual claim that conflicts with the model's own sensory input. We introduce IMAVB, a curated 500-clip benchmark of long-form movies with a 2x2 design crossing target modality (vision, audio) and premise condition (standard, misleading), which lets us measure conflict detection separately from ordinary multimodal comprehension. Across eight open-source omnimodal LLMs and Gemini 3.1 Pro, we document a Representation-Action Gap: hidden states reliably encode premise-perception mismatches even when the same models almost never reject the false claim in their outputs. Behaviorally, models fall into two failure modes: under-rejection, in which they answer misleading questions as if the false premise were true; and over-rejection, in which they reject more often but also reject standard questions, sacrificing ordinary comprehension accuracy. The gap is modality-asymmetric (audio grounding underperforms vision) and prompt-resistant across seven variants. As an initial diagnostic intervention, a probe-guided logit adjustment (PGLA) re-injects the encoded mismatch signal into decoding and consistently improves rejection behavior. Together, these results suggest the bottleneck for omnimodal grounding lies in translation, not perception.

LLaVA-OneVision-2: Towards Next-Generation Perceptual Intelligence

We introduce LLaVA-OneVision-2 (LLaVA-OV-2), the most capable vision-language model in the LLaVA-OneVision series to date, achieving superior performance across a broad range of multimodal benchmarks. The model builds on a native OneVision-Encoder and incorporates Windowed Attention for efficient local computation while maintaining native resolution. Its key advance is codec-stream tokenization: it treats compressed video as a continuous bit-cost stream, where bit-cost dynamics determine adaptive temporal groups, and motion-residual cues select salient spatial evidence into compact visual canvases. This allocation concentrates a limited token budget on event-bearing content, enabling more stable long-video token compression than fixed groups of pictures. A shared 3D RoPE further places codec canvases, sampled frames, and images in a unified spatiotemporal coordinate system. Furthermore, we build the LLaVA-OV-2 data and training stack around large-scale open supervision: approximately 8M re-captioned video samples for pretraining, a 4M-sample spatial corpus for fine-tuning. We also introduce JumpScore, a temporal-localization benchmark targeting fine-grained grounding in high-frequency, densely repeated motion, a regime underrepresented by existing video evaluations. A standout capability of LLaVA-OV-2 is its unified perception across video understanding, temporal grounding, spatial grounding, and manipulation-trace reasoning. On JumpScore, LLaVA-OneVision-2-8B reaches 74.9 JumpScore mAP, surpassing Qwen3-VL-8B (30.1) by +44.8 points; under matched visual-token budgets on the same benchmark, codec-stream inputs improve temporal grounding over frame sampling by +9.7 points. Across standard benchmarks, LLaVA-OneVision-2-8B further outperforms Qwen3-VL-8B by +4.3 average points on video tasks, +5.3 on spatial tasks, and +15.6 average J&F on tracking tasks.

ParaVT: Taming the Tool Prior Paradox for Parallel Tool Use in Agentic Video Reinforcement Learning

Training large multimodal models (LMMs) via reinforcement learning (RL) to natively invoke video-processing tools (e.g., cropping) has become a promising route to long-video understanding. However, existing native-RL methods dispatch tool calls sequentially (i.e., one per turn): a single wrong crop propagates errors without peer correction, multi-turn tool calls corrupt context, and inference cost scales linearly with the number of turns. We introduce ParaVT, the first multi-agent end-to-end RL-trained framework for Parallel Video Tool calling, dispatching multiple time-window crops in a single turn for cleaner context and better fault tolerance. Yet applying standard RL to ParaVT reveals an obstacle we term the Tool Prior Paradox: the pretrained tool priors that enable tool exploration also destabilize cold-started structural format and expose the skip-tool reward shortcut under temperature sampling. A cross-model contrast on a weaker-prior LMM supports this claim: format stays stable but RL elicits zero tool calls, indicating that prior strength is the shared driver of both format collapse and tool exploration. We propose PARA-GRPO (Parseability-Anchored and Ratio-gAted GRPO), which augments standard RL with two complementary mechanisms: (i) a targeted format reward applied only at the structural-token positions most prone to collapse, and (ii) a per-prompt frame-budget randomization that creates training prompts where calling the tool yields a measurable reward signal over skipping it. Across six long-video understanding benchmarks, ParaVT improves over the Qwen3-VL baseline by +7.9% on average, with PARA-GRPO lifting training-time format compliance from 0.13 to 0.64. As tool capabilities become increasingly internalized in modern LMMs, RL must cooperate with the resulting priors, and ParaVT offers a general recipe for agentic RL. The Impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on Market Equilibrium: Evidence from a Natural Experiment

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) exhibits the capability to generate creative content akin to human output with greater efficiency and reduced costs. This groundbreaking capability, however, has ignited a debate regarding its potential to displace human creators. In light of these discussions, this paper empirically investigates the impact of generative AI on market equilibrium, in the context of China's leading art outsourcing platform. We overcome the challenge of causal inference by identifying an unanticipated and sudden leak of an advanced image-generative AI as a natural experiment. This leak precipitated a notable reduction in the production costs of anime-style images compared to other genres, thereby providing a unique opportunity for difference-in-differences comparisons. Our analysis shows that the advent of generative AI led to a 64% reduction in average prices, yet it simultaneously spurred a 121% increase in order volume and a 56% increase in overall revenue. This growth is primarily driven by the rising demand for "low-end" personal orders, rather than commercial orders. Moreover, incumbent creators retain the majority of the market share and reap the most benefits of generative AI. Our research highlights the potential of generative AI to benefit all stakeholders across the platform economy, yielding both scholarly contributions and practical implications.

OpenMMReasoner: Pushing the Frontiers for Multimodal Reasoning with an Open and General Recipe

Recent advancements in large reasoning models have fueled growing interest in extending such capabilities to multimodal domains. However, despite notable progress in visual reasoning, the lack of transparent and reproducible data curation and training strategies remains a major barrier to scalable research. In this work, we introduce OpenMMReasoner, a fully transparent two-stage recipe for multimodal reasoning spanning supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and reinforcement learning (RL). In the SFT stage, we construct an 874K-sample cold-start dataset with rigorous step-by-step validation, providing a strong foundation for reasoning capabilities. The subsequent RL stage leverages a 74K-sample dataset across diverse domains to further sharpen and stabilize these abilities, resulting in a more robust and efficient learning process. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that our training recipe not only surpasses strong baselines but also highlights the critical role of data quality and training design in shaping multimodal reasoning performance. Notably, our method achieves a 11.6% improvement over the Qwen2.5-VL-7B-Instruct baseline across nine multimodal reasoning benchmarks, establishing a solid empirical foundation for future large-scale multimodal reasoning research. LongVT: Incentivizing "Thinking with Long Videos" via Native Tool Calling

Large multimodal models (LMMs) have shown great potential for video reasoning with textual Chain-of-Thought. However, they remain vulnerable to hallucinations, especially when processing long-form videos where evidence is sparse and temporally dispersed. Inspired by how humans comprehend long videos - by first skimming globally and then examining relevant clips for details - we introduce LongVT, an end-to-end agentic framework that enables "Thinking with Long Videos" via interleaved Multimodal Chain-of-Tool-Thought. Specifically, we exploit LMMs' inherent temporal grounding ability as a native video cropping tool to zoom in on a specific video clip and resample finer-grained video frames. This global-to-local reasoning loop continues until answers are grounded in retrieved visual evidence. Given the scarcity of fine-grained question-answering (QA) data for the long video reasoning task, we curate and will release a data suite named VideoSIAH to facilitate both training and evaluation. Specifically, our training dataset consists of 247.9K samples for tool-integrated cold-start supervised fine-tuning, 1.6K samples for agentic reinforcement learning, and 15.4K samples for agentic reinforcement fine-tuning, respectively. Our evaluation benchmark consists of 1,280 QA pairs that are carefully curated through a semi-automatic data pipeline with human-in-the-loop validation. With a meticulously designed three-stage training strategy and extensive empirical validation, LongVT consistently outperforms existing strong baselines across four challenging long-video understanding and reasoning benchmarks. Long Context Transfer from Language to Vision

Video sequences offer valuable temporal information, but existing large multimodal models (LMMs) fall short in understanding extremely long videos. Many works address this by reducing the number of visual tokens using visual resamplers. Alternatively, in this paper, we approach this problem from the perspective of the language model. By simply extrapolating the context length of the language backbone, we enable LMMs to comprehend orders of magnitude more visual tokens without any video training. We call this phenomenon long context transfer and carefully ablate its properties. To effectively measure LMMs' ability to generalize to long contexts in the vision modality, we develop V-NIAH (Visual Needle-In-A-Haystack), a purely synthetic long vision benchmark inspired by the language model's NIAH test. Our proposed Long Video Assistant (LongVA) can process 2000 frames or over 200K visual tokens without additional complexities. With its extended context length, LongVA achieves state-of-the-art performance on Video-MME among 7B-scale models by densely sampling more input frames. Visual Generation in the New Era: An Evolution from Atomic Mapping to Agentic World Modeling

Recent visual generation models have made major progress in photorealism, typography, instruction following, and interactive editing, yet they still struggle with spatial reasoning, persistent state, long-horizon consistency, and causal understanding. We argue that the field should move beyond appearance synthesis toward intelligent visual generation: plausible visuals grounded in structure, dynamics, domain knowledge, and causal relations. To frame this shift, we introduce a five-level taxonomy: Atomic Generation, Conditional Generation, In-Context Generation, Agentic Generation, and World-Modeling Generation, progressing from passive renderers to interactive, agentic, world-aware generators. We analyze key technical drivers, including flow matching, unified understanding-and-generation models, improved visual representations, post-training, reward modeling, data curation, synthetic data distillation, and sampling acceleration. We further show that current evaluations often overestimate progress by emphasizing perceptual quality while missing structural, temporal, and causal failures. By combining benchmark review, in-the-wild stress tests, and expert-constrained case studies, this roadmap offers a capability-centered lens for understanding, evaluating, and advancing the next generation of intelligent visual generation systems.

GVPO: Group Variance Policy Optimization for Large Language Model Post-Training

Post-training plays a crucial role in refining and aligning large language models to meet specific tasks and human preferences. While recent advancements in post-training techniques, such as Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), leverage increased sampling with relative reward scoring to achieve superior performance, these methods often suffer from training instability that limits their practical adoption. As a next step, we present Group Variance Policy Optimization (GVPO). GVPO incorporates the analytical solution to KL-constrained reward maximization directly into its gradient weights, ensuring alignment with the optimal policy. The method provides intuitive physical interpretations: its gradient mirrors the mean squared error between the central distance of implicit rewards and that of actual rewards. GVPO offers two key advantages: (1) it guarantees a unique optimal solution, exactly the KL-constrained reward maximization objective, (2) it supports flexible sampling distributions that avoids on-policy and importance sampling limitations. By unifying theoretical guarantees with practical adaptability, GVPO establishes a new paradigm for reliable and versatile LLM post-training.

Large Multi-modal Models Can Interpret Features in Large Multi-modal Models

Recent advances in Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) lead to significant breakthroughs in both academia and industry. One question that arises is how we, as humans, can understand their internal neural representations. This paper takes an initial step towards addressing this question by presenting a versatile framework to identify and interpret the semantics within LMMs. Specifically, 1) we first apply a Sparse Autoencoder(SAE) to disentangle the representations into human understandable features. 2) We then present an automatic interpretation framework to interpreted the open-semantic features learned in SAE by the LMMs themselves. We employ this framework to analyze the LLaVA-NeXT-8B model using the LLaVA-OV-72B model, demonstrating that these features can effectively steer the model's behavior. Our results contribute to a deeper understanding of why LMMs excel in specific tasks, including EQ tests, and illuminate the nature of their mistakes along with potential strategies for their rectification. These findings offer new insights into the internal mechanisms of LMMs and suggest parallels with the cognitive processes of the human brain.

MixEval-X: Any-to-Any Evaluations from Real-World Data Mixtures

Perceiving and generating diverse modalities are crucial for AI models to effectively learn from and engage with real-world signals, necessitating reliable evaluations for their development. We identify two major issues in current evaluations: (1) inconsistent standards, shaped by different communities with varying protocols and maturity levels; and (2) significant query, grading, and generalization biases. To address these, we introduce MixEval-X, the first any-to-any, real-world benchmark designed to optimize and standardize evaluations across diverse input and output modalities. We propose multi-modal benchmark mixture and adaptation-rectification pipelines to reconstruct real-world task distributions, ensuring evaluations generalize effectively to real-world use cases. Extensive meta-evaluations show our approach effectively aligns benchmark samples with real-world task distributions. Meanwhile, MixEval-X's model rankings correlate strongly with that of crowd-sourced real-world evaluations (up to 0.98) while being much more efficient. We provide comprehensive leaderboards to rerank existing models and organizations and offer insights to enhance understanding of multi-modal evaluations and inform future research.

UniME-V2: MLLM-as-a-Judge for Universal Multimodal Embedding Learning

Universal multimodal embedding models are foundational to various tasks. Existing approaches typically employ in-batch negative mining by measuring the similarity of query-candidate pairs. However, these methods often struggle to capture subtle semantic differences among candidates and lack diversity in negative samples. Moreover, the embeddings exhibit limited discriminative ability in distinguishing false and hard negatives. In this paper, we leverage the advanced understanding capabilities of MLLMs to enhance representation learning and present a novel Universal Multimodal Embedding (UniME-V2) model. Our approach first constructs a potential hard negative set through global retrieval. We then introduce the MLLM-as-a-Judge mechanism, which utilizes MLLMs to assess the semantic alignment of query-candidate pairs and generate soft semantic matching scores. These scores serve as a foundation for hard negative mining, mitigating the impact of false negatives and enabling the identification of diverse, high-quality hard negatives. Furthermore, the semantic matching scores are used as soft labels to mitigate the rigid one-to-one mapping constraint. By aligning the similarity matrix with the soft semantic matching score matrix, the model learns semantic distinctions among candidates, significantly enhancing its discriminative capacity. To further improve performance, we propose UniME-V2-Reranker, a reranking model trained on our mined hard negatives through a joint pairwise and listwise optimization approach. We conduct comprehensive experiments on the MMEB benchmark and multiple retrieval tasks, demonstrating that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on average across all tasks.

RSPO: Risk-Seeking Policy Optimization for Pass@k and Max@k Metrics in Large Language Models

Current large language model post-training optimizes a risk-neutral objective that maximizes expected reward, yet evaluation relies heavily on risk-seeking metrics like Pass@k (at least one success in k trials) and Max@k (maximum reward across k responses). This mismatch in risk preferences can inevitably lead to suboptimal performance. To bridge this gap, we propose Risk-Seeking Policy Optimization (RSPO), a novel method that directly targets Pass@k and Max@k during training. A key challenge in optimizing these metrics is the "hitchhiking" problem: low-reward responses are inadvertently reinforced if they co-occur with a high-reward response within a sample of k generations, resulting in inefficient optimization. RSPO addresses this problem by leveraging the closed-form probability that a given response is the maximum among k samplings. Despite the complexity of nested gradients over multiple responses, RSPO produces efficient, unbiased gradient estimators for both metrics. We validate our approach with both rigorous theoretical analysis and comprehensive experimental results.

DINO-RotateMatch: A Rotation-Aware Deep Framework for Robust Image Matching in Large-Scale 3D Reconstruction

This paper presents DINO-RotateMatch, a deep-learning framework designed to address the chal lenges of image matching in large-scale 3D reconstruction from unstructured Internet images. The method integrates a dataset-adaptive image pairing strategy with rotation-aware keypoint extraction and matching. DINO is employed to retrieve semantically relevant image pairs in large collections, while rotation-based augmentation captures orientation-dependent local features using ALIKED and Light Glue. Experiments on the Kaggle Image Matching Challenge 2025 demonstrate consistent improve ments in mean Average Accuracy (mAA), achieving a Silver Award (47th of 943 teams). The results confirm that combining self-supervised global descriptors with rotation-enhanced local matching offers a robust and scalable solution for large-scale 3D reconstruction.

WorldQA: Multimodal World Knowledge in Videos through Long-Chain Reasoning

Multimodal information, together with our knowledge, help us to understand the complex and dynamic world. Large language models (LLM) and large multimodal models (LMM), however, still struggle to emulate this capability. In this paper, we present WorldQA, a video understanding dataset designed to push the boundaries of multimodal world models with three appealing properties: (1) Multimodal Inputs: The dataset comprises 1007 question-answer pairs and 303 videos, necessitating the analysis of both auditory and visual data for successful interpretation. (2) World Knowledge: We identify five essential types of world knowledge for question formulation. This approach challenges models to extend their capabilities beyond mere perception. (3) Long-Chain Reasoning: Our dataset introduces an average reasoning step of 4.45, notably surpassing other videoQA datasets. Furthermore, we introduce WorldRetriever, an agent designed to synthesize expert knowledge into a coherent reasoning chain, thereby facilitating accurate responses to WorldQA queries. Extensive evaluations of 13 prominent LLMs and LMMs reveal that WorldRetriever, although being the most effective model, achieved only 70% of humanlevel performance in multiple-choice questions. This finding highlights the necessity for further advancement in the reasoning and comprehension abilities of models. Our experiments also yield several key insights. For instance, while humans tend to perform better with increased frames, current LMMs, including WorldRetriever, show diminished performance under similar conditions. We hope that WorldQA,our methodology, and these insights could contribute to the future development of multimodal world models.
