ConDense: Consistent 2D/3D Pre-training for Dense and Sparse Features from Multi-View ImagesXiaoshuai Zhang, Zhicheng Wang, Howard Zhou et al. · cmu, deepmind
To advance the state of the art in the creation of 3D foundation models, this paper introduces the ConDense framework for 3D pre-training utilizing existing pre-trained 2D networks and large-scale multi-view datasets. We propose a novel 2D-3D joint training scheme to extract co-embedded 2D and 3D features in an end-to-end pipeline, where 2D-3D feature consistency is enforced through a volume rendering NeRF-like ray marching process. Using dense per pixel features we are able to 1) directly distill the learned priors from 2D models to 3D models and create useful 3D backbones, 2) extract more consistent and less noisy 2D features, 3) formulate a consistent embedding space where 2D, 3D, and other modalities of data (e.g., natural language prompts) can be jointly queried. Furthermore, besides dense features, ConDense can be trained to extract sparse features (e.g., key points), also with 2D-3D consistency -- condensing 3D NeRF representations into compact sets of decorated key points. We demonstrate that our pre-trained model provides good initialization for various 3D tasks including 3D classification and segmentation, outperforming other 3D pre-training methods by a significant margin. It also enables, by exploiting our sparse features, additional useful downstream tasks, such as matching 2D images to 3D scenes, detecting duplicate 3D scenes, and querying a repository of 3D scenes through natural language -- all quite efficiently and without any per-scene fine-tuning.

NeuroSEM: A hybrid framework for simulating multiphysics problems by coupling PINNs and spectral elementsKhemraj Shukla, Zongren Zou, Chi Hin Chan et al.
Multiphysics problems that are characterized by complex interactions among fluid dynamics, heat transfer, structural mechanics, and electromagnetics, are inherently challenging due to their coupled nature. While experimental data on certain state variables may be available, integrating these data with numerical solvers remains a significant challenge. Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) have shown promising results in various engineering disciplines, particularly in handling noisy data and solving inverse problems in partial differential equations (PDEs). However, their effectiveness in forecasting nonlinear phenomena in multiphysics regimes, particularly involving turbulence, is yet to be fully established. This study introduces NeuroSEM, a hybrid framework integrating PINNs with the high-fidelity Spectral Element Method (SEM) solver, Nektar++. NeuroSEM leverages the strengths of both PINNs and SEM, providing robust solutions for multiphysics problems. PINNs are trained to assimilate data and model physical phenomena in specific subdomains, which are then integrated into the Nektar++ solver. We demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of NeuroSEM for thermal convection in cavity flow and flow past a cylinder. We applied NeuroSEM to the Rayleigh-Bénard convection system, including cases with missing thermal boundary conditions and noisy datasets, and to real particle image velocimetry (PIV) data to capture flow patterns characterized by horseshoe vortical structures. The framework's plug-and-play nature facilitates its extension to other multiphysics or multiscale problems. Furthermore, NeuroSEM is optimized for efficient execution on emerging integrated GPU-CPU architectures. This hybrid approach enhances the accuracy and efficiency of simulations, making it a powerful tool for tackling complex engineering challenges in various scientific domains.

POEM: Reconstructing Hand in a Point Embedded Multi-view StereoLixin Yang, Jian Xu, Licheng Zhong et al.
Enable neural networks to capture 3D geometrical-aware features is essential in multi-view based vision tasks. Previous methods usually encode the 3D information of multi-view stereo into the 2D features. In contrast, we present a novel method, named POEM, that directly operates on the 3D POints Embedded in the Multi-view stereo for reconstructing hand mesh in it. Point is a natural form of 3D information and an ideal medium for fusing features across views, as it has different projections on different views. Our method is thus in light of a simple yet effective idea, that a complex 3D hand mesh can be represented by a set of 3D points that 1) are embedded in the multi-view stereo, 2) carry features from the multi-view images, and 3) encircle the hand. To leverage the power of points, we design two operations: point-based feature fusion and cross-set point attention mechanism. Evaluation on three challenging multi-view datasets shows that POEM outperforms the state-of-the-art in hand mesh reconstruction. Operator Learning Enhanced Physics-informed Neural Networks for Solving Partial Differential Equations Characterized by Sharp SolutionsBin Lin, Zhiping Mao, Zhicheng Wang et al.
Physics-informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have been shown as a promising approach for solving both forward and inverse problems of partial differential equations (PDEs). Meanwhile, the neural operator approach, including methods such as Deep Operator Network (DeepONet) and Fourier neural operator (FNO), has been introduced and extensively employed in approximating solution of PDEs. Nevertheless, to solve problems consisting of sharp solutions poses a significant challenge when employing these two approaches. To address this issue, we propose in this work a novel framework termed Operator Learning Enhanced Physics-informed Neural Networks (OL-PINN). Initially, we utilize DeepONet to learn the solution operator for a set of smooth problems relevant to the PDEs characterized by sharp solutions. Subsequently, we integrate the pre-trained DeepONet with PINN to resolve the target sharp solution problem. We showcase the efficacy of OL-PINN by successfully addressing various problems, such as the nonlinear diffusion-reaction equation, the Burgers equation and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation at high Reynolds number. Compared with the vanilla PINN, the proposed method requires only a small number of residual points to achieve a strong generalization capability. Moreover, it substantially enhances accuracy, while also ensuring a robust training process. Furthermore, OL-PINN inherits the advantage of PINN for solving inverse problems. To this end, we apply the OL-PINN approach for solving problems with only partial boundary conditions, which usually cannot be solved by the classical numerical methods, showing its capacity in solving ill-posed problems and consequently more complex inverse problems.

MonoSIM: Simulating Learning Behaviors of Heterogeneous Point Cloud Object Detectors for Monocular 3D Object DetectionHan Sun, Zhaoxin Fan, Zhenbo Song et al.
Monocular 3D object detection is a fundamental but very important task to many applications including autonomous driving, robotic grasping and augmented reality. Existing leading methods tend to estimate the depth of the input image first, and detect the 3D object based on point cloud. This routine suffers from the inherent gap between depth estimation and object detection. Besides, the prediction error accumulation would also affect the performance. In this paper, a novel method named MonoSIM is proposed. The insight behind introducing MonoSIM is that we propose to simulate the feature learning behaviors of a point cloud based detector for monocular detector during the training period. Hence, during inference period, the learned features and prediction would be similar to the point cloud based detector as possible. To achieve it, we propose one scene-level simulation module, one RoI-level simulation module and one response-level simulation module, which are progressively used for the detector's full feature learning and prediction pipeline. We apply our method to the famous M3D-RPN detector and CaDDN detector, conducting extensive experiments on KITTI and Waymo Open datasets. Results show that our method consistently improves the performance of different monocular detectors for a large margin without changing their network architectures. Image Generators are Generalist Vision LearnersValentin Gabeur, Shangbang Long, Songyou Peng et al.
Recent works show that image and video generators exhibit zero-shot visual understanding behaviors, in a way reminiscent of how LLMs develop emergent capabilities of language understanding and reasoning from generative pretraining. While it has long been conjectured that the ability to create visual content implies an ability to understand it, there has been limited evidence that generative vision models have developed strong understanding capabilities. In this work, we demonstrate that image generation training serves a role similar to LLM pretraining, and lets models learn powerful and general visual representations that enable SOTA performance on various vision tasks. We introduce Vision Banana, a generalist model built by instruction-tuning Nano Banana Pro (NBP) on a mixture of its original training data alongside a small amount of vision task data. By parameterizing the output space of vision tasks as RGB images, we seamlessly reframe perception as image generation. Our generalist model, Vision Banana, achieves SOTA results on a variety of vision tasks involving both 2D and 3D understanding, beating or rivaling zero-shot domain-specialists, including Segment Anything Model 3 on segmentation tasks, and the Depth Anything series on metric depth estimation. We show that these results can be achieved with lightweight instruction-tuning without sacrificing the base model's image generation capabilities. The superior results suggest that image generation pretraining is a generalist vision learner. It also shows that image generation serves as a unified and universal interface for vision tasks, similar to text generation's role in language understanding and reasoning. We could be witnessing a major paradigm shift for computer vision, where generative vision pretraining takes a central role in building Foundational Vision Models for both generation and understanding.

Efficient RAG with Intent-Aware Retrieval and Semantics-Preserving ChunkingFachrina Dewi Puspitasari, Chaoning Zhang, Jiaquan Zhang et al.
The demand for powerful instruction following and reasoning capability of large language models (LLMs) has promoted rapid development of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). The RAG system assists LLM generation by retrieving chunks of query-fit supplementary knowledge from an external database. Conventional RAG systems, however, suffer from information insufficiency due to two factors, which are intent-agnostic retrieval and information fragmentation. Our work proposes a RAG framework, termed InSemRAG, that addresses these challenges via an iterative retrieve-and-check mechanism with two supporting modules, an intention-aware retriever (IAR) and semantics-preserving chunking (SPC). IAR implements a dynamic hybrid retrieval method that adaptively weights the retrieval channels based on the query intent, while SPC performs detection and reparation to the damaged evidence chunks to preserve the semantic integrity. To alleviate the computational latency brought by our iterative mechanism, we leverage small language models (SLMs). Extensive experiments across several benchmark datasets consistently demonstrate the competitiveness of our method against recent state-of-the-art RAG mechanisms. Particularly, our method achieves significant gains on multi-hop and evidence-sensitive tasks, with a 2.65-point improvement in F1 on HotPotQA and a 1.5-point increase in accuracy on FEVER. Our method also achieves competitive performance to Multi-Hop RAG with 4.32$\times$ lower latency with the utilization of SLM.

Object Level Depth Reconstruction for Category Level 6D Object Pose Estimation From Monocular RGB ImageZhaoxin Fan, Zhenbo Song, Jian Xu et al.
Recently, RGBD-based category-level 6D object pose estimation has achieved promising improvement in performance, however, the requirement of depth information prohibits broader applications. In order to relieve this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach named Object Level Depth reconstruction Network (OLD-Net) taking only RGB images as input for category-level 6D object pose estimation. We propose to directly predict object-level depth from a monocular RGB image by deforming the category-level shape prior into object-level depth and the canonical NOCS representation. Two novel modules named Normalized Global Position Hints (NGPH) and Shape-aware Decoupled Depth Reconstruction (SDDR) module are introduced to learn high fidelity object-level depth and delicate shape representations. At last, the 6D object pose is solved by aligning the predicted canonical representation with the back-projected object-level depth. Extensive experiments on the challenging CAMERA25 and REAL275 datasets indicate that our model, though simple, achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Reconstruction-Aware Prior Distillation for Semi-supervised Point Cloud CompletionZhaoxin Fan, Yulin He, Zhicheng Wang et al.
Real-world sensors often produce incomplete, irregular, and noisy point clouds, making point cloud completion increasingly important. However, most existing completion methods rely on large paired datasets for training, which is labor-intensive. This paper proposes RaPD, a novel semi-supervised point cloud completion method that reduces the need for paired datasets. RaPD utilizes a two-stage training scheme, where a deep semantic prior is learned in stage 1 from unpaired complete and incomplete point clouds, and a semi-supervised prior distillation process is introduced in stage 2 to train a completion network using only a small number of paired samples. Additionally, a self-supervised completion module is introduced to improve performance using unpaired incomplete point clouds. Experiments on multiple datasets show that RaPD outperforms previous methods in both homologous and heterologous scenarios.

Beyond Point-wise Neural Collapse: A Topology-Aware Hierarchical Classifier for Class-Incremental LearningHuiyu Yi, Zhiming Xu, Dunwei Tu et al.
The Nearest Class Mean (NCM) classifier is widely favored in Class-Incremental Learning (CIL) for its superior resistance to catastrophic forgetting compared to Fully Connected layers. While Neural Collapse (NC) theory supports NCM's optimality by assuming features collapse into single points, non-linear feature drift and insufficient training in CIL often prevent this ideal state. Consequently, classes manifest as complex manifolds rather than collapsed points, rendering the single-point NCM suboptimal. To address this, we propose Hierarchical-Cluster SOINN (HC-SOINN), a novel classifier that captures the topological structure of these manifolds via a ``local-to-global'' representation. Furthermore, we introduce Structure-Topology Alignment via Residuals (STAR) method, which employs a fine-grained pointwise trajectory tracking mechanism to actively deform the learned topology, allowing it to adapt precisely to complex non-linear feature drift. Theoretical analysis and Procrustes distance experiments validate our framework's resilience to manifold deformations. We integrated HC-SOINN into seven state-of-the-art methods by replacing their original classifiers, achieving consistent improvements that highlight the effectiveness and robustness of our approach. Takin: A Cohort of Superior Quality Zero-shot Speech Generation ModelsSijing Chen, Yuan Feng, Laipeng He et al.
With the advent of the big data and large language model era, zero-shot personalized rapid customization has emerged as a significant trend. In this report, we introduce Takin AudioLLM, a series of techniques and models, mainly including Takin TTS, Takin VC, and Takin Morphing, specifically designed for audiobook production. These models are capable of zero-shot speech production, generating high-quality speech that is nearly indistinguishable from real human speech and facilitating individuals to customize the speech content according to their own needs. Specifically, we first introduce Takin TTS, a neural codec language model that builds upon an enhanced neural speech codec and a multi-task training framework, capable of generating high-fidelity natural speech in a zero-shot way. For Takin VC, we advocate an effective content and timbre joint modeling approach to improve the speaker similarity, while advocating for a conditional flow matching based decoder to further enhance its naturalness and expressiveness. Last, we propose the Takin Morphing system with highly decoupled and advanced timbre and prosody modeling approaches, which enables individuals to customize speech production with their preferred timbre and prosody in a precise and controllable manner. FuRPE: Learning Full-body Reconstruction from Part ExpertsZhaoxin Fan, Yuqing Pan, Hao Xu et al.
In the field of full-body reconstruction, the scarcity of annotated data often impedes the efficacy of prevailing methods. To address this issue, we introduce FuRPE, a novel framework that employs part-experts and an ingenious pseudo ground-truth selection scheme to derive high-quality pseudo labels. These labels, central to our approach, equip our network with the capability to efficiently learn from the available data. Integral to FuRPE is a unique exponential moving average training strategy and expert-derived feature distillation strategy. These novel elements of FuRPE not only serve to further refine the model but also to reduce potential biases that may arise from inaccuracies in pseudo labels, thereby optimizing the network's training process and enhancing the robustness of the model. We apply FuRPE to train both two-stage and fully convolutional single-stage full-body reconstruction networks. Our exhaustive experiments on numerous benchmark datasets illustrate a substantial performance boost over existing methods, underscoring FuRPE's potential to reshape the state-of-the-art in full-body reconstruction.

Lightweight LLM Agent Memory with Small Language ModelsJiaquan Zhang, Chaoning Zhang, Shuxu Chen et al.
Although LLM agents can leverage tools for complex tasks, they still need memory to maintain cross-turn consistency and accumulate reusable information in long-horizon interactions. However, retrieval-based external memory systems incur low online overhead but suffer from unstable accuracy due to limited query construction and candidate filtering. In contrast, many systems use repeated large-model calls for online memory operations, improving accuracy but accumulating latency over long interactions. We propose LightMem, a lightweight memory system for better agent memory driven by Small Language Models (SLMs). LightMem modularizes memory retrieval, writing, and long-term consolidation, and separates online processing from offline consolidation to enable efficient memory invocation under bounded compute. We organize memory into short-term memory (STM) for immediate conversational context, mid-term memory (MTM) for reusable interaction summaries, and long-term memory (LTM) for consolidated knowledge, and uses user identifiers to support independent retrieval and incremental maintenance in multi-user settings. Online, LightMem operates under a fixed retrieval budget and selects memories via a two-stage procedure: vector-based coarse retrieval followed by semantic consistency re-ranking. Offline, it abstracts reusable interaction evidence and incrementally integrates it into LTM. Experiments show gains across model scales, with an average F1 improvement of about 2.5 on LoCoMo, more effective and low median latency (83 ms retrieval; 581 ms end-to-end).

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 2.X model family: Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 2.5 Flash, as well as our earlier Gemini 2.0 Flash and Flash-Lite models. Gemini 2.5 Pro is our most capable model yet, achieving SoTA performance on frontier coding and reasoning benchmarks. In addition to its incredible coding and reasoning skills, Gemini 2.5 Pro is a thinking model that excels at multimodal understanding and it is now able to process up to 3 hours of video content. Its unique combination of long context, multimodal and reasoning capabilities can be combined to unlock new agentic workflows. Gemini 2.5 Flash provides excellent reasoning abilities at a fraction of the compute and latency requirements and Gemini 2.0 Flash and Flash-Lite provide high performance at low latency and cost. Taken together, the Gemini 2.X model generation spans the full Pareto frontier of model capability vs cost, allowing users to explore the boundaries of what is possible with complex agentic problem solving.

Compression Tells Intelligence: Visual Coding, Visual Token Technology, and the UnificationXin Jin, Jinming Liu, Yuntao Wei et al.
"Compression Tells Intelligence", is supported by research in artificial intelligence, particularly concerning (multimodal) large language models (LLMs/MLLMs), where compression efficiency often correlates with improved model performance and capabilities. For compression, classical visual coding based on traditional information theory has developed over decades, achieving great success with numerous international industrial standards widely applied in multimedia (e.g., image/video) systems. Except that, the recent emergingvisual token technology of generative multi-modal large models also shares a similar fundamental objective like visual coding: maximizing semantic information fidelity during the representation learning while minimizing computational cost. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of two dominant technique families first -- Visual Coding and Vision Token Technology -- then we further unify them from the aspect of optimization, discussing the essence of compression efficiency and model performance trade-off behind. Next, based on the proposed unified formulation bridging visual coding andvisual token technology, we synthesize bidirectional insights of themselves and forecast the next-gen visual codec and token techniques. Last but not least, we experimentally show a large potential of the task-oriented token developments in the more practical tasks like multimodal LLMs (MLLMs), AI-generated content (AIGC), and embodied AI, as well as shedding light on the future possibility of standardizing a general token technology like the traditional codecs (e.g., H.264/265) with high efficiency for a wide range of intelligent tasks in a unified and effective manner.

Understanding Chain-of-Thought in Large Language Models via Topological Data AnalysisChenghao Li, Chaoning Zhang, Yi Lu et al.
With the development of large language models (LLMs), particularly with the introduction of the long reasoning chain technique, the reasoning ability of LLMs in complex problem-solving has been significantly enhanced. While acknowledging the power of long reasoning chains, we cannot help but wonder: Why do different reasoning chains perform differently in reasoning? What components of the reasoning chains play a key role? Existing studies mainly focus on evaluating reasoning chains from a functional perspective, with little attention paid to their structural mechanisms. To address this gap, this work is the first to analyze and evaluate the quality of the reasoning chain from a structural perspective. We apply persistent homology from Topological Data Analysis (TDA) to map reasoning steps into semantic space, extract topological features, and analyze structural changes. These changes reveal semantic coherence, logical redundancy, and identify logical breaks and gaps. By calculating homology groups, we assess connectivity and redundancy at various scales, using barcode and persistence diagrams to quantify stability and consistency. Our results show that the topological structural complexity of reasoning chains correlates positively with accuracy. More complex chains identify correct answers sooner, while successful reasoning exhibits simpler topologies, reducing redundancy and cycles, enhancing efficiency and interpretability. This work provides a new perspective on reasoning chain quality assessment and offers guidance for future optimization.

Robot Learning from a Physical World ModelJiageng Mao, Sicheng He, Hao-Ning Wu et al.
We introduce PhysWorld, a framework that enables robot learning from video generation through physical world modeling. Recent video generation models can synthesize photorealistic visual demonstrations from language commands and images, offering a powerful yet underexplored source of training signals for robotics. However, directly retargeting pixel motions from generated videos to robots neglects physics, often resulting in inaccurate manipulations. PhysWorld addresses this limitation by coupling video generation with physical world reconstruction. Given a single image and a task command, our method generates task-conditioned videos and reconstructs the underlying physical world from the videos, and the generated video motions are grounded into physically accurate actions through object-centric residual reinforcement learning with the physical world model. This synergy transforms implicit visual guidance into physically executable robotic trajectories, eliminating the need for real robot data collection and enabling zero-shot generalizable robotic manipulation. Experiments on diverse real-world tasks demonstrate that PhysWorld substantially improves manipulation accuracy compared to previous approaches. Exploring Contextual Attribute Density in Referring Expression CountingZhicheng Wang, Zhiyu Pan, Zhan Peng et al.
Referring expression counting (REC) algorithms are for more flexible and interactive counting ability across varied fine-grained text expressions. However, the requirement for fine-grained attribute understanding poses challenges for prior arts, as they struggle to accurately align attribute information with correct visual patterns. Given the proven importance of ''visual density'', it is presumed that the limitations of current REC approaches stem from an under-exploration of ''contextual attribute density'' (CAD). In the scope of REC, we define CAD as the measure of the information intensity of one certain fine-grained attribute in visual regions. To model the CAD, we propose a U-shape CAD estimator in which referring expression and multi-scale visual features from GroundingDINO can interact with each other. With additional density supervision, we can effectively encode CAD, which is subsequently decoded via a novel attention procedure with CAD-refined queries. Integrating all these contributions, our framework significantly outperforms state-of-the-art REC methods, achieves $30\%$ error reduction in counting metrics and a $10\%$ improvement in localization accuracy. PUGS: Zero-shot Physical Understanding with Gaussian SplattingYinghao Shuai, Ran Yu, Yuantao Chen et al.
Current robotic systems can understand the categories and poses of objects well. But understanding physical properties like mass, friction, and hardness, in the wild, remains challenging. We propose a new method that reconstructs 3D objects using the Gaussian splatting representation and predicts various physical properties in a zero-shot manner. We propose two techniques during the reconstruction phase: a geometry-aware regularization loss function to improve the shape quality and a region-aware feature contrastive loss function to promote region affinity. Two other new techniques are designed during inference: a feature-based property propagation module and a volume integration module tailored for the Gaussian representation. Our framework is named as zero-shot physical understanding with Gaussian splatting, or PUGS. PUGS achieves new state-of-the-art results on the standard benchmark of ABO-500 mass prediction. We provide extensive quantitative ablations and qualitative visualization to demonstrate the mechanism of our designs. Pseudo-Labeling by Multi-Policy Viewfinder Network for Image CroppingZhiyu Pan, Kewei Wang, Yizheng Wu et al.
Automatic image cropping models predict reframing boxes to enhance image aesthetics. Yet, the scarcity of labeled data hinders the progress of this task. To overcome this limitation, we explore the possibility of utilizing both labeled and unlabeled data together to expand the scale of training data for image cropping models. This idea can be implemented in a pseudo-labeling way: producing pseudo labels for unlabeled data by a teacher model and training a student model with these pseudo labels. However, the student may learn from teacher's mistakes. To address this issue, we propose the multi-policy viewfinder network (MPV-Net) that offers diverse refining policies to rectify the mistakes in original pseudo labels from the teacher. The most reliable policy is selected to generate trusted pseudo labels. The reliability of policies is evaluated via the robustness against box jittering. The efficacy of our method can be evaluated by the improvement compared to the supervised baseline which only uses labeled data. Notably, our MPV-Net outperforms off-the-shelf pseudo-labeling methods, yielding the most substantial improvement over the supervised baseline. Furthermore, our approach achieves state-of-the-art results on both the FCDB and FLMS datasets, signifying the superiority of our approach.

The Cartesian Shortcut: Re-evaluate Vision Reasoning in Polar Coordinate SpaceXia Hu, Zhenrui Yue, Brian Potetz et al.
As current Multimodal Large Language Models rapidly saturate canonical visual reasoning benchmarks, a key question emerges: do these strong scores genuinely reflect robust visual understanding? We identify a pervasive vulnerability, the \textbf{Cartesian Shortcut}: visual reasoning benchmarks prevalently build on orthogonal grid-based layouts that can be readily discretized into explicit textual coordinates. Models systematically exploit this property, heavily leveraging text-based deductive reasoning to assist visual problem-solving. To systematically dismantle this shortcut, we introduce \textbf{Polaris-Bench}, which re-formulates 53 visual reasoning tasks in Polar coordinate space with paired Cartesian counterparts as reference, while preserving consistent logical constraints and task semantics -- thus fundamentally breaking the orthogonal prior that models exploit. Comprehensive evaluation across $14$ state-of-the-art MLLMs reveals that frontier models achieving $70$--$83\%$ on Cartesian layouts collapse to $31$--$39\%$ on Polar equivalents, with degradation persisting even under complete logical equivalence. Moreover, reasoning gains observed on Cartesian layouts are severely diminished on Polar equivalents. These findings expose a critical deficiency in current MLLMs: the lack of topology-invariant visual reasoning.

Wave-Particle (Continuous-Discrete) Dualistic Visual Tokenization for Unified Understanding and GenerationYizhu Chen, Chen Ju, Zhicheng Wang et al.
The unification of understanding and generation within a single multi-modal large model (MLLM) remains one significant challenge, largely due to the dichotomy between continuous and discrete visual tokenizations. Continuous tokenizer (CT) achieves strong performance by bridging multiple independently-trained understanding modules and generation modules, but suffers from complex multi-stage pipelines and substantial engineering overhead. Conversely, discrete tokenizers (DT) offer a conceptually elegant idea by quantizing each image into a primitive, but inevitably leading to information loss and performance degradation. To resolve this tension, we question the binary choice between CT and DT, inspired by the wave-particle duality of light, and propose the Continuous-Discrete Dualistic Visual Tokenizer (CDD-VT). We treat visual data as a flexible composition of image primitives derived from quantized codebooks, with the crucial insight that the primitive number assigned to each visual sample is adaptively determined according to its complexity: simple instances use a few primitives, emulating discrete tokenization, while complex instances use many, approximating continuous tokenization. Two core components are designed: Diverse Quantitative Primitives, which encourage primitives orthogonality to better populate information space, and Dynamic Primitive Allocator, which assesses sample complexity to determine the optimal set of primitives. Extensive experiments on reconstruction, retrieval and classification show that CDD-VT achieves superior performance over to specialized CT and DT, effectively getting strong result within a concise and scalable MLLM.

Explore More, Learn Better: Parallel MLLM Embeddings under Mutual Information MinimizationZhicheng Wang, Chen Ju, Xu Chen et al.
Embedding models are a cornerstone of modern AI. Driven by Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), they have made great progress in architecture and data curation, while the holistic paradigm is still limited to SSC, i.e., single input, singular embedding, contrastive supervision, which collapses rich, multifaceted inputs into monolithic embeddings and fails to fully exploit MLLM capabilities. In this paper, we tailor one Parallel Decoupling Framework (PDF) for multimodal embedding learning, by utilizing the proprietary steerability of MLLMs, i.e., their ability to flexibly generate quite differentiated response under explicit instructions. Concretely, PDF conditions a shared MLLM backbone on distinct, learnable prefixes to roll out multiple parallel paths for one input, then relies on these paths to obtain parallel embeddings. To promote full parallel diversity, we employ Mutual Information Minimization (MIM) as an explicit constraint, coupled with per-path contrastive supervision to maintain semantic alignment. Such dual-objectives force PDF to yield robust semantic coverage and a generalizable embedding space. Ultimately, the remarkable embedding space are accessible at inference via one single forward pass, incurring negligible computational overhead. We instantiate PDF on multiple MLLM backbones and prove its effectiveness on MMEB benchmark. Significant gains are consistently achieved across various resolutions and model sizes, e.g., boosting the VLM2Vec-LLaVA-1.6-LR model by a remarkable +8.9% (7B), while the VLM2Vec-Qwen2VL models by +4.2% (2B) and +3.1% (7B). In terms of efficiency, our 2B model surpasses its baseline by +2.6% using only half the computational budget.

Rectify and Align GPS Points to Parking Spots via Rank-1 ConstraintJiaxing Deng, Junbiao Pang, Zhicheng Wang et al.
Parking spots are essential components, providing vital mobile resources for residents in a city. Accurate Global Positioning System (GPS) points of parking spots are the core data for subsequent applications,e.g., parking management, parking policy, and urban development. However, high-rise buildings tend to cause GPS points to drift from the actual locations of parking spots; besides, the standard lower-cost GPS equipment itself has a certain location error. Therefore, it is a non-trivial task to correct a few wrong GPS points from a large number of parking spots in an unsupervised approach. In this paper, motivated by the physical constraints of parking spots (i.e., parking spots are parallel to the sides of roads), we propose an unsupervised low-rank method to effectively rectify errors in GPS points and further align them to the parking spots in a unified framework. The proposed unconventional rectification and alignment method is simple and yet effective for any type of GPS point errors. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method to solve a practical problem. Rethinking the Heatmap Regression for Bottom-up Human Pose EstimationZhengxiong Luo, Zhicheng Wang, Yan Huang et al.
Heatmap regression has become the most prevalent choice for nowadays human pose estimation methods. The ground-truth heatmaps are usually constructed via covering all skeletal keypoints by 2D gaussian kernels. The standard deviations of these kernels are fixed. However, for bottom-up methods, which need to handle a large variance of human scales and labeling ambiguities, the current practice seems unreasonable. To better cope with these problems, we propose the scale-adaptive heatmap regression (SAHR) method, which can adaptively adjust the standard deviation for each keypoint. In this way, SAHR is more tolerant of various human scales and labeling ambiguities. However, SAHR may aggravate the imbalance between fore-background samples, which potentially hurts the improvement of SAHR. Thus, we further introduce the weight-adaptive heatmap regression (WAHR) to help balance the fore-background samples. Extensive experiments show that SAHR together with WAHR largely improves the accuracy of bottom-up human pose estimation. As a result, we finally outperform the state-of-the-art model by +1.5AP and achieve 72.0AP on COCO test-dev2017, which is com-arable with the performances of most top-down methods. Learning Delicate Local Representations for Multi-Person Pose EstimationYuanhao Cai, Zhicheng Wang, Zhengxiong Luo et al.
In this paper, we propose a novel method called Residual Steps Network (RSN). RSN aggregates features with the same spatial size (Intra-level features) efficiently to obtain delicate local representations, which retain rich low-level spatial information and result in precise keypoint localization. Additionally, we observe the output features contribute differently to final performance. To tackle this problem, we propose an efficient attention mechanism - Pose Refine Machine (PRM) to make a trade-off between local and global representations in output features and further refine the keypoint locations. Our approach won the 1st place of COCO Keypoint Challenge 2019 and achieves state-of-the-art results on both COCO and MPII benchmarks, without using extra training data and pretrained model. Our single model achieves 78.6 on COCO test-dev, 93.0 on MPII test dataset. Ensembled models achieve 79.2 on COCO test-dev, 77.1 on COCO test-challenge dataset. Cascaded Pyramid Network for Multi-Person Pose EstimationYilun Chen, Zhicheng Wang, Yuxiang Peng et al.
The topic of multi-person pose estimation has been largely improved recently, especially with the development of convolutional neural network. However, there still exist a lot of challenging cases, such as occluded keypoints, invisible keypoints and complex background, which cannot be well addressed. In this paper, we present a novel network structure called Cascaded Pyramid Network (CPN) which targets to relieve the problem from these "hard" keypoints. More specifically, our algorithm includes two stages: GlobalNet and RefineNet. GlobalNet is a feature pyramid network which can successfully localize the "simple" keypoints like eyes and hands but may fail to precisely recognize the occluded or invisible keypoints. Our RefineNet tries explicitly handling the "hard" keypoints by integrating all levels of feature representations from the GlobalNet together with an online hard keypoint mining loss. In general, to address the multi-person pose estimation problem, a top-down pipeline is adopted to first generate a set of human bounding boxes based on a detector, followed by our CPN for keypoint localization in each human bounding box. Based on the proposed algorithm, we achieve state-of-art results on the COCO keypoint benchmark, with average precision at 73.0 on the COCO test-dev dataset and 72.1 on the COCO test-challenge dataset, which is a 19% relative improvement compared with 60.5 from the COCO 2016 keypoint challenge.Code (https://github.com/chenyilun95/tf-cpn.git) and the detection results are publicly available for further research.

Fast Rule-Based Decoding: Revisiting Syntactic Rules in Neural Constituency ParsingTianyu Shi, Zhicheng Wang, Liyin Xiao et al.
Most recent studies on neural constituency parsing focus on encoder structures, while few developments are devoted to decoders. Previous research has demonstrated that probabilistic statistical methods based on syntactic rules are particularly effective in constituency parsing, whereas syntactic rules are not used during the training of neural models in prior work probably due to their enormous computation requirements. In this paper, we first implement a fast CKY decoding procedure harnessing GPU acceleration, based on which we further derive a syntactic rule-based (rule-constrained) CKY decoding. In the experiments, our method obtains 95.89 and 92.52 F1 on the datasets of PTB and CTB respectively, which shows significant improvements compared with previous approaches. Besides, our parser achieves strong and competitive cross-domain performance in zero-shot settings.

In constituency parsing, span-based decoding is an important direction. However, for Chinese sentences, because of their linguistic characteristics, it is necessary to utilize other models to perform word segmentation first, which introduces a series of uncertainties and generally leads to errors in the computation of the constituency tree afterward. This work proposes a method for joint Chinese word segmentation and Span-based Constituency Parsing by adding extra labels to individual Chinese characters on the parse trees. Through experiments, the proposed algorithm outperforms the recent models for joint segmentation and constituency parsing on CTB 5.1.

Order-sensitive Neural Constituency ParsingZhicheng Wang, Tianyu Shi, Liyin Xiao et al.
We propose a novel algorithm that improves on the previous neural span-based CKY decoder for constituency parsing. In contrast to the traditional span-based decoding, where spans are combined only based on the sum of their scores, we introduce an order-sensitive strategy, where the span combination scores are more carefully derived from an order-sensitive basis. Our decoder can be regarded as a generalization over existing span-based decoder in determining a finer-grain scoring scheme for the combination of lower-level spans into higher-level spans, where we emphasize on the order of the lower-level spans and use order-sensitive span scores as well as order-sensitive combination grammar rule scores to enhance prediction accuracy. We implement the proposed decoding strategy harnessing GPU parallelism and achieve a decoding speed on par with state-of-the-art span-based parsers. Using the previous state-of-the-art model without additional data as our baseline, we outperform it and improve the F1 score on the Penn Treebank Dataset by 0.26% and on the Chinese Treebank Dataset by 0.35%.

Large Scale Foundation Models for Intelligent Manufacturing Applications: A SurveyHaotian Zhang, Semujju Stuart Dereck, Zhicheng Wang et al.
Although the applications of artificial intelligence especially deep learning had greatly improved various aspects of intelligent manufacturing, they still face challenges for wide employment due to the poor generalization ability, difficulties to establish high-quality training datasets, and unsatisfactory performance of deep learning methods. The emergence of large scale foundational models(LSFMs) had triggered a wave in the field of artificial intelligence, shifting deep learning models from single-task, single-modal, limited data patterns to a paradigm encompassing diverse tasks, multimodal, and pre-training on massive datasets. Although LSFMs had demonstrated powerful generalization capabilities, automatic high-quality training dataset generation and superior performance across various domains, applications of LSFMs on intelligent manufacturing were still in their nascent stage. A systematic overview of this topic was lacking, especially regarding which challenges of deep learning can be addressed by LSFMs and how these challenges can be systematically tackled. To fill this gap, this paper systematically expounded current statue of LSFMs and their advantages in the context of intelligent manufacturing. and compared comprehensively with the challenges faced by current deep learning models in various intelligent manufacturing applications. We also outlined the roadmaps for utilizing LSFMs to address these challenges. Finally, case studies of applications of LSFMs in real-world intelligent manufacturing scenarios were presented to illustrate how LSFMs could help industries, improve their efficiency.

Learning and discovering multiple solutions using physics-informed neural networks with random initialization and deep ensembleZongren Zou, Zhicheng Wang, George Em Karniadakis
We explore the capability of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to discover multiple solutions. Many real-world phenomena governed by nonlinear differential equations (DEs), such as fluid flow, exhibit multiple solutions under the same conditions, yet capturing this solution multiplicity remains a significant challenge. A key difficulty is giving appropriate initial conditions or initial guesses, to which the widely used time-marching schemes and Newton's iteration method are very sensitive in finding solutions for complex computational problems. While machine learning models, particularly PINNs, have shown promise in solving DEs, their ability to capture multiple solutions remains underexplored. In this work, we propose a simple and practical approach using PINNs to learn and discover multiple solutions. We first reveal that PINNs, when combined with random initialization and deep ensemble method -- originally developed for uncertainty quantification -- can effectively uncover multiple solutions to nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations (ODEs/PDEs). Our approach highlights the critical role of initialization in shaping solution diversity, addressing an often-overlooked aspect of machine learning for scientific computing. Furthermore, we propose utilizing PINN-generated solutions as initial conditions or initial guesses for conventional numerical solvers to enhance accuracy and efficiency in capturing multiple solutions. Extensive numerical experiments, including the Allen-Cahn equation and cavity flow, where our approach successfully identifies both stable and unstable solutions, validate the effectiveness of our method. These findings establish a general and efficient framework for addressing solution multiplicity in nonlinear differential equations.

Digging Into Normal Incorporated Stereo MatchingZihua Liu, Songyan Zhang, Zhicheng Wang et al.
Despite the remarkable progress facilitated by learning-based stereo-matching algorithms, disparity estimation in low-texture, occluded, and bordered regions still remains a bottleneck that limits the performance. To tackle these challenges, geometric guidance like plane information is necessary as it provides intuitive guidance about disparity consistency and affinity similarity. In this paper, we propose a normal incorporated joint learning framework consisting of two specific modules named non-local disparity propagation(NDP) and affinity-aware residual learning(ARL). The estimated normal map is first utilized for calculating a non-local affinity matrix and a non-local offset to perform spatial propagation at the disparity level. To enhance geometric consistency, especially in low-texture regions, the estimated normal map is then leveraged to calculate a local affinity matrix, providing the residual learning with information about where the correction should refer and thus improving the residual learning efficiency. Extensive experiments on several public datasets including Scene Flow, KITTI 2015, and Middlebury 2014 validate the effectiveness of our proposed method. By the time we finished this work, our approach ranked 1st for stereo matching across foreground pixels on the KITTI 2015 dataset and 3rd on the Scene Flow dataset among all the published works.

Learning Turbulent Flows with Generative Models: Super-resolution, Forecasting, and Sparse Flow ReconstructionVivek Oommen, Siavash Khodakarami, Aniruddha Bora et al.
Neural operators are promising surrogates for dynamical systems but when trained with standard L2 losses they tend to oversmooth fine-scale turbulent structures. Here, we show that combining operator learning with generative modeling overcomes this limitation. We consider three practical turbulent-flow challenges where conventional neural operators fail: spatio-temporal super-resolution, forecasting, and sparse flow reconstruction. For Schlieren jet super-resolution, an adversarially trained neural operator (adv-NO) reduces the energy-spectrum error by 15x while preserving sharp gradients at neural operator-like inference cost. For 3D homogeneous isotropic turbulence, adv-NO trained on only 160 timesteps from a single trajectory forecasts accurately for five eddy-turnover times and offers 114x wall-clock speed-up at inference than the baseline diffusion-based forecasters, enabling near-real-time rollouts. For reconstructing cylinder wake flows from highly sparse Particle Tracking Velocimetry-like inputs, a conditional generative model infers full 3D velocity and pressure fields with correct phase alignment and statistics. These advances enable accurate reconstruction and forecasting at low compute cost, bringing near-real-time analysis and control within reach in experimental and computational fluid mechanics. FocusChat: Text-guided Long Video Understanding via Spatiotemporal Information FilteringZheng Cheng, Rendong Wang, Zhicheng Wang
Recently, multi-modal large language models have made significant progress. However, visual information lacking of guidance from the user's intention may lead to redundant computation and involve unnecessary visual noise, especially in long, untrimmed videos. To address this issue, we propose FocusChat, a text-guided multi-modal large language model (LLM) that emphasizes visual information correlated to the user's prompt. In detail, Our model first undergoes the semantic extraction module, which comprises a visual semantic branch and a text semantic branch to extract image and text semantics, respectively. The two branches are combined using the Spatial-Temporal Filtering Module (STFM). STFM enables explicit spatial-level information filtering and implicit temporal-level feature filtering, ensuring that the visual tokens are closely aligned with the user's query. It lowers the essential number of visual tokens inputted into the LLM. FocusChat significantly outperforms Video-LLaMA in zero-shot experiments, using an order of magnitude less training data with only 16 visual tokens occupied. It achieves results comparable to the state-of-the-art in few-shot experiments, with only 0.72M pre-training data.

ALow-Cost Real-Time Framework for Industrial Action Recognition Using Foundation ModelsZhicheng Wang, Wensheng Liang, Ruiyan Zhuang et al.
Action recognition (AR) in industrial environments -- particularly for identifying actions and operational gestures -- faces persistent challenges due to high deployment costs, poor cross-scenario generalization, and limited real-time performance. To address these issues, we propose a low-cost real-time framework for industrial action recognition using foundation models, denoted as LRIAR, to enhance recognition accuracy and transferability while minimizing human annotation and computational overhead. The proposed framework constructs an automatically labeled dataset by coupling Grounding DINO with the pretrained BLIP-2 image encoder, enabling efficient and scalable action labeling. Leveraging the constructed dataset, we train YOLOv5 for real-time action detection, and a Vision Transformer (ViT) classifier is deceloped via LoRA-based fine-tuning for action classification. Extensive experiments conducted in real-world industrial settings validate the effectiveness of LRIAR, demonstrating consistent improvements over state-of-the-art methods in recognition accuracy, scenario generalization, and deployment efficiency.

Fast Measuring Pavement Crack Width by Cascading Principal Component AnalysisZhicheng Wang, Junbiao Pang
Accurate quantification of pavement crack width plays a pivotal role in assessing structural integrity and guiding maintenance interventions. However, achieving precise crack width measurements presents significant challenges due to: (1) the complex, non-uniform morphology of crack boundaries, which limits the efficacy of conventional approaches, and (2) the demand for rapid measurement capabilities from arbitrary pixel locations to facilitate comprehensive pavement condition evaluation. To overcome these limitations, this study introduces a cascaded framework integrating Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Robust PCA (RPCA) for efficient crack width extraction from digital images. The proposed methodology comprises three sequential stages: (1) initial crack segmentation using established detection algorithms to generate a binary representation, (2) determination of the primary orientation axis for quasi-parallel cracks through PCA, and (3) extraction of the Main Propagation Axis (MPA) for irregular crack geometries using RPCA. Comprehensive evaluations were conducted across three publicly available datasets, demonstrating that the proposed approach achieves superior performance in both computational efficiency and measurement accuracy compared to existing state-of-the-art techniques.

GaussianLens: Localized High-Resolution Reconstruction via On-Demand Gaussian DensificationYijia Weng, Zhicheng Wang, Songyou Peng et al.
We perceive our surroundings with an active focus, paying more attention to regions of interest, such as the shelf labels in a grocery store. When it comes to scene reconstruction, this human perception trait calls for spatially varying degrees of detail ready for closer inspection in critical regions, preferably reconstructed on demand. While recent works in 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) achieve fast, generalizable reconstruction from sparse views, their uniform resolution output leads to high computational costs unscalable to high-resolution training. As a result, they cannot leverage available images at their original high resolution to reconstruct details. Per-scene optimization methods reconstruct finer details with adaptive density control, yet require dense observations and lengthy offline optimization. To bridge the gap between the prohibitive cost of high-resolution holistic reconstructions and the user needs for localized fine details, we propose the problem of localized high-resolution reconstruction via on-demand Gaussian densification. Given a low-resolution 3DGS reconstruction, the goal is to learn a generalizable network that densifies the initial 3DGS to capture fine details in a user-specified local region of interest (RoI), based on sparse high-resolution observations of the RoI. This formulation avoids the high cost and redundancy of uniformly high-resolution reconstructions and fully leverages high-resolution captures in critical regions. We propose GaussianLens, a feed-forward densification framework that fuses multi-modal information from the initial 3DGS and multi-view images. We further design a pixel-guided densification mechanism that effectively captures details under large resolution increases. Experiments demonstrate our method's superior performance in local fine detail reconstruction and strong scalability to images of up to $1024\times1024$ resolution.

IPFormer-VideoLLM: Enhancing Multi-modal Video Understanding for Multi-shot ScenesYujia Liang, Jile Jiao, Xuetao Feng et al.
Video Large Language Models (VideoLLMs) have demonstrated remarkable understanding capabilities, but are found struggling to tackle multi-shot scenarios,e.g., video clips with varying camera angles or scene changes. This challenge can render failures such as instance identity forgetting and key frame negligence. In this work, we first attribute the challenge to the lack of multi-shot annotations among existing datasets and therefore we introduce a new dataset termed MultiClip-Bench, featuring dense descriptions and instruction-based question-answering pairs tailored for multi-shot scenarios. We empirically find that the training set significantly boosts the multi-shot performance, while the testing benchmark provides a reliable measure of the model capability in multi-shot scenarios. By further analyzing and discovering that current models only encode instance features in a discrete or lossy manner, at the risk of missing identity information, we then contribute a new model IPFormer-VideoLLM. Its key idea is the injection of instance-level features as instance prompts through an efficient attention-based connector. This allows for the aggregation of instance-specific information across scenes. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed dataset and model not only enhance the multi-scene video understanding significantly, but also offer distinct advantages across various video benchmarks.

Towards Degradation-Robust Reconstruction in Generalizable NeRFChan Ho Park, Ka Leong Cheng, Zhicheng Wang et al.
Generalizable Neural Radiance Field (GNeRF) across scenes has been proven to be an effective way to avoid per-scene optimization by representing a scene with deep image features of source images. However, despite its potential for real-world applications, there has been limited research on the robustness of GNeRFs to different types of degradation present in the source images. The lack of such research is primarily attributed to the absence of a large-scale dataset fit for training a degradation-robust generalizable NeRF model. To address this gap and facilitate investigations into the degradation robustness of 3D reconstruction tasks, we construct the Objaverse Blur Dataset, comprising 50,000 images from over 1000 settings featuring multiple levels of blur degradation. In addition, we design a simple and model-agnostic module for enhancing the degradation robustness of GNeRFs. Specifically, by extracting 3D-aware features through a lightweight depth estimator and denoiser, the proposed module shows improvement on different popular methods in GNeRFs in terms of both quantitative and visual quality over varying degradation types and levels. A comprehensive and FAIR comparison between MLP and KAN representations for differential equations and operator networksKhemraj Shukla, Juan Diego Toscano, Zhicheng Wang et al.
Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs) were recently introduced as an alternative representation model to MLP. Herein, we employ KANs to construct physics-informed machine learning models (PIKANs) and deep operator models (DeepOKANs) for solving differential equations for forward and inverse problems. In particular, we compare them with physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) and deep operator networks (DeepONets), which are based on the standard MLP representation. We find that although the original KANs based on the B-splines parameterization lack accuracy and efficiency, modified versions based on low-order orthogonal polynomials have comparable performance to PINNs and DeepONet although they still lack robustness as they may diverge for different random seeds or higher order orthogonal polynomials. We visualize their corresponding loss landscapes and analyze their learning dynamics using information bottleneck theory. Our study follows the FAIR principles so that other researchers can use our benchmarks to further advance this emerging topic.

Vision Transformer Off-the-Shelf: A Surprising Baseline for Few-Shot Class-Agnostic CountingZhicheng Wang, Liwen Xiao, Zhiguo Cao et al.
Class-agnostic counting (CAC) aims to count objects of interest from a query image given few exemplars. This task is typically addressed by extracting the features of query image and exemplars respectively and then matching their feature similarity, leading to an extract-then-match paradigm. In this work, we show that CAC can be simplified in an extract-and-match manner, particularly using a vision transformer (ViT) where feature extraction and similarity matching are executed simultaneously within the self-attention. We reveal the rationale of such simplification from a decoupled view of the self-attention. The resulting model, termed CACViT, simplifies the CAC pipeline into a single pretrained plain ViT. Further, to compensate the loss of the scale and the order-of-magnitude information due to resizing and normalization in plain ViT, we present two effective strategies for scale and magnitude embedding. Extensive experiments on the FSC147 and the CARPK datasets show that CACViT significantly outperforms state-of-the art CAC approaches in both effectiveness (23.60% error reduction) and generalization, which suggests CACViT provides a concise and strong baseline for CAC. Attend to Who You Are: Supervising Self-Attention for Keypoint Detection and Instance-Aware AssociationSen Yang, Zhicheng Wang, Ze Chen et al.
This paper presents a new method to solve keypoint detection and instance association by using Transformer. For bottom-up multi-person pose estimation models, they need to detect keypoints and learn associative information between keypoints. We argue that these problems can be entirely solved by Transformer. Specifically, the self-attention in Transformer measures dependencies between any pair of locations, which can provide association information for keypoints grouping. However, the naive attention patterns are still not subjectively controlled, so there is no guarantee that the keypoints will always attend to the instances to which they belong. To address it we propose a novel approach of supervising self-attention for multi-person keypoint detection and instance association. By using instance masks to supervise self-attention to be instance-aware, we can assign the detected keypoints to their corresponding instances based on the pairwise attention scores, without using pre-defined offset vector fields or embedding like CNN-based bottom-up models. An additional benefit of our method is that the instance segmentation results of any number of people can be directly obtained from the supervised attention matrix, thereby simplifying the pixel assignment pipeline. The experiments on the COCO multi-person keypoint detection challenge and person instance segmentation task demonstrate the effectiveness and simplicity of the proposed method and show a promising way to control self-attention behavior for specific purposes.

ACR-Pose: Adversarial Canonical Representation Reconstruction Network for Category Level 6D Object Pose EstimationZhaoxin Fan, Zhengbo Song, Jian Xu et al.
Recently, category-level 6D object pose estimation has achieved significant improvements with the development of reconstructing canonical 3D representations. However, the reconstruction quality of existing methods is still far from excellent. In this paper, we propose a novel Adversarial Canonical Representation Reconstruction Network named ACR-Pose. ACR-Pose consists of a Reconstructor and a Discriminator. The Reconstructor is primarily composed of two novel sub-modules: Pose-Irrelevant Module (PIM) and Relational Reconstruction Module (RRM). PIM tends to learn canonical-related features to make the Reconstructor insensitive to rotation and translation, while RRM explores essential relational information between different input modalities to generate high-quality features. Subsequently, a Discriminator is employed to guide the Reconstructor to generate realistic canonical representations. The Reconstructor and the Discriminator learn to optimize through adversarial training. Experimental results on the prevalent NOCS-CAMERA and NOCS-REAL datasets demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Guiding Query Position and Performing Similar Attention for Transformer-Based Detection HeadsXiaohu Jiang, Ze Chen, Zhicheng Wang et al.
After DETR was proposed, this novel transformer-based detection paradigm which performs several cross-attentions between object queries and feature maps for predictions has subsequently derived a series of transformer-based detection heads. These models iterate object queries after each cross-attention. However, they don't renew the query position which indicates object queries' position information. Thus model needs extra learning to figure out the newest regions that query position should express and need more attention. To fix this issue, we propose the Guided Query Position (GQPos) method to embed the latest location information of object queries to query position iteratively. Another problem of such transformer-based detection heads is the high complexity to perform attention on multi-scale feature maps, which hinders them from improving detection performance at all scales. Therefore we propose a novel fusion scheme named Similar Attention (SiA): besides the feature maps is fused, SiA also fuse the attention weights maps to accelerate the learning of high-resolution attention weight map by well-learned low-resolution attention weight map. Our experiments show that the proposed GQPos improves the performance of a series of models, including DETR, SMCA, YoloS, and HoiTransformer and SiA consistently improve the performance of multi-scale transformer-based detection heads like DETR and HoiTransformer.

Adaptive Dilated Convolution For Human Pose EstimationZhengxiong Luo, Zhicheng Wang, Yan Huang et al.
Most existing human pose estimation (HPE) methods exploit multi-scale information by fusing feature maps of four different spatial sizes, \ie $1/4$, $1/8$, $1/16$, and $1/32$ of the input image. There are two drawbacks of this strategy: 1) feature maps of different spatial sizes may be not well aligned spatially, which potentially hurts the accuracy of keypoint location; 2) these scales are fixed and inflexible, which may restrict the generalization ability over various human sizes. Towards these issues, we propose an adaptive dilated convolution (ADC). It can generate and fuse multi-scale features of the same spatial sizes by setting different dilation rates for different channels. More importantly, these dilation rates are generated by a regression module. It enables ADC to adaptively adjust the fused scales and thus ADC may generalize better to various human sizes. ADC can be end-to-end trained and easily plugged into existing methods. Extensive experiments show that ADC can bring consistent improvements to various HPE methods. The source codes will be released for further research.

SimCC: a Simple Coordinate Classification Perspective for Human Pose EstimationYanjie Li, Sen Yang, Peidong Liu et al.
The 2D heatmap-based approaches have dominated Human Pose Estimation (HPE) for years due to high performance. However, the long-standing quantization error problem in the 2D heatmap-based methods leads to several well-known drawbacks: 1) The performance for the low-resolution inputs is limited; 2) To improve the feature map resolution for higher localization precision, multiple costly upsampling layers are required; 3) Extra post-processing is adopted to reduce the quantization error. To address these issues, we aim to explore a brand new scheme, called \textit{SimCC}, which reformulates HPE as two classification tasks for horizontal and vertical coordinates. The proposed SimCC uniformly divides each pixel into several bins, thus achieving \emph{sub-pixel} localization precision and low quantization error. Benefiting from that, SimCC can omit additional refinement post-processing and exclude upsampling layers under certain settings, resulting in a more simple and effective pipeline for HPE. Extensive experiments conducted over COCO, CrowdPose, and MPII datasets show that SimCC outperforms heatmap-based counterparts, especially in low-resolution settings by a large margin.

Graph-MLP: Node Classification without Message Passing in GraphYang Hu, Haoxuan You, Zhecan Wang et al.
Graph Neural Network (GNN) has been demonstrated its effectiveness in dealing with non-Euclidean structural data. Both spatial-based and spectral-based GNNs are relying on adjacency matrix to guide message passing among neighbors during feature aggregation. Recent works have mainly focused on powerful message passing modules, however, in this paper, we show that none of the message passing modules is necessary. Instead, we propose a pure multilayer-perceptron-based framework, Graph-MLP with the supervision signal leveraging graph structure, which is sufficient for learning discriminative node representation. In model-level, Graph-MLP only includes multi-layer perceptrons, activation function, and layer normalization. In the loss level, we design a neighboring contrastive (NContrast) loss to bridge the gap between GNNs and MLPs by utilizing the adjacency information implicitly. This design allows our model to be lighter and more robust when facing large-scale graph data and corrupted adjacency information. Extensive experiments prove that even without adjacency information in testing phase, our framework can still reach comparable and even superior performance against the state-of-the-art models in the graph node classification task.

DAVOS: Semi-Supervised Video Object Segmentation via Adversarial Domain AdaptationJinshuo Zhang, Zhicheng Wang, Songyan Zhang et al.
Domain shift has always been one of the primary issues in video object segmentation (VOS), for which models suffer from degeneration when tested on unfamiliar datasets. Recently, many online methods have emerged to narrow the performance gap between training data (source domain) and test data (target domain) by fine-tuning on annotations of test data which are usually in shortage. In this paper, we propose a novel method to tackle domain shift by first introducing adversarial domain adaptation to the VOS task, with supervised training on the source domain and unsupervised training on the target domain. By fusing appearance and motion features with a convolution layer, and by adding supervision onto the motion branch, our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on DAVIS2016 with 82.6% mean IoU score after supervised training. Meanwhile, our adversarial domain adaptation strategy significantly raises the performance of the trained model when applied on FBMS59 and Youtube-Object, without exploiting extra annotations.

Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) for fluid mechanics: A reviewShengze Cai, Zhiping Mao, Zhicheng Wang et al.
Despite the significant progress over the last 50 years in simulating flow problems using numerical discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations (NSE), we still cannot incorporate seamlessly noisy data into existing algorithms, mesh-generation is complex, and we cannot tackle high-dimensional problems governed by parametrized NSE. Moreover, solving inverse flow problems is often prohibitively expensive and requires complex and expensive formulations and new computer codes. Here, we review flow physics-informed learning, integrating seamlessly data and mathematical models, and implementing them using physics-informed neural networks (PINNs). We demonstrate the effectiveness of PINNs for inverse problems related to three-dimensional wake flows, supersonic flows, and biomedical flows.
