Structural Causal 3D ReconstructionWeiyang Liu, Zhen Liu, Liam Paull et al. · cambridge
This paper considers the problem of unsupervised 3D object reconstruction from in-the-wild single-view images. Due to ambiguity and intrinsic ill-posedness, this problem is inherently difficult to solve and therefore requires strong regularization to achieve disentanglement of different latent factors. Unlike existing works that introduce explicit regularizations into objective functions, we look into a different space for implicit regularization -- the structure of latent space. Specifically, we restrict the structure of latent space to capture a topological causal ordering of latent factors (i.e., representing causal dependency as a directed acyclic graph). We first show that different causal orderings matter for 3D reconstruction, and then explore several approaches to find a task-dependent causal factor ordering. Our experiments demonstrate that the latent space structure indeed serves as an implicit regularization and introduces an inductive bias beneficial for reconstruction.
Generative Flow Networks for Discrete Probabilistic ModelingDinghuai Zhang, Nikolay Malkin, Zhen Liu et al.
We present energy-based generative flow networks (EB-GFN), a novel probabilistic modeling algorithm for high-dimensional discrete data. Building upon the theory of generative flow networks (GFlowNets), we model the generation process by a stochastic data construction policy and thus amortize expensive MCMC exploration into a fixed number of actions sampled from a GFlowNet. We show how GFlowNets can approximately perform large-block Gibbs sampling to mix between modes. We propose a framework to jointly train a GFlowNet with an energy function, so that the GFlowNet learns to sample from the energy distribution, while the energy learns with an approximate MLE objective with negative samples from the GFlowNet. We demonstrate EB-GFN's effectiveness on various probabilistic modeling tasks. Code is publicly available at https://github.com/zdhNarsil/EB_GFN.

Improving Bracket Image Restoration and Enhancement with Flow-guided Alignment and Enhanced Feature AggregationWenjie Lin, Zhen Liu, Chengzhi Jiang et al.
In this paper, we address the Bracket Image Restoration and Enhancement (BracketIRE) task using a novel framework, which requires restoring a high-quality high dynamic range (HDR) image from a sequence of noisy, blurred, and low dynamic range (LDR) multi-exposure RAW inputs. To overcome this challenge, we present the IREANet, which improves the multiple exposure alignment and aggregation with a Flow-guide Feature Alignment Module (FFAM) and an Enhanced Feature Aggregation Module (EFAM). Specifically, the proposed FFAM incorporates the inter-frame optical flow as guidance to facilitate the deformable alignment and spatial attention modules for better feature alignment. The EFAM further employs the proposed Enhanced Residual Block (ERB) as a foundational component, wherein a unidirectional recurrent network aggregates the aligned temporal features to better reconstruct the results. To improve model generalization and performance, we additionally employ the Bayer preserving augmentation (BayerAug) strategy to augment the multi-exposure RAW inputs. Our experimental evaluations demonstrate that the proposed IREANet shows state-of-the-art performance compared with previous methods.

Context-endcoding for neural network based skull stripping in magnetic resonance imagingZhen Liu, Borui Xiao, Yuemeng Li et al.
Skull stripping is usually the first step for most brain analysisprocess in magnetic resonance images. A lot of deep learn-ing neural network based methods have been developed toachieve higher accuracy. Since the 3D deep learning modelssuffer from high computational cost and are subject to GPUmemory limit challenge, a variety of 2D deep learning meth-ods have been developed. However, existing 2D deep learn-ing methods are not equipped to effectively capture 3D se-mantic information that is needed to achieve higher accuracy. In this paper, we propose a context-encoding method to em-power the 2D network to capture the 3D context information. For the context-encoding method, firstly we encode the 2Dfeatures of original 2D network, secondly we encode the sub-volume of 3D MRI images, finally we fuse the encoded 2Dfeatures and 3D features with semantic encoding classifica-tion loss. To get computational efficiency, although we en-code the sub-volume of 3D MRI images instead of buildinga 3D neural network, extensive experiments on three bench-mark Datasets demonstrate our method can achieve superioraccuracy to state-of-the-art alternative methods with the dicescore 99.6% on NFBS and 99.09 % on LPBA40 and 99.17 %on OASIS.
