Efficient Camera Exposure Control for Visual Odometry via Deep Reinforcement Learning

The stability of visual odometry (VO) systems is undermined by degraded image quality, especially in environments with significant illumination changes. This study employs a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework to train agents for exposure control, aiming to enhance imaging performance in challenging conditions. A lightweight image simulator is developed to facilitate the training process, enabling the diversification of image exposure and sequence trajectory. This setup enables completely offline training, eliminating the need for direct interaction with camera hardware and the real environments. Different levels of reward functions are crafted to enhance the VO systems, equipping the DRL agents with varying intelligence. Extensive experiments have shown that our exposure control agents achieve superior efficiency-with an average inference duration of 1.58 ms per frame on a CPU-and respond more quickly than traditional feedback control schemes. By choosing an appropriate reward function, agents acquire an intelligent understanding of motion trends and anticipate future illumination changes. Comparing Representations in Tracking for Event Camera-based SLAM

This paper investigates two typical image-type representations for event camera-based tracking: time surface (TS) and event map (EM). Based on the original TS-based tracker, we make use of these two representations' complementary strengths to develop an enhanced version. The proposed tracker consists of a general strategy to evaluate the optimization problem's degeneracy online and then switch proper representations. Both TS and EM are motion- and scene-dependent, and thus it is important to figure out their limitations in tracking. We develop six tracker variations and conduct a thorough comparison of them on sequences covering various scenarios and motion complexities. Greedy-Based Feature Selection for Efficient LiDAR SLAM

Modern LiDAR-SLAM (L-SLAM) systems have shown excellent results in large-scale, real-world scenarios. However, they commonly have a high latency due to the expensive data association and nonlinear optimization. This paper demonstrates that actively selecting a subset of features significantly improves both the accuracy and efficiency of an L-SLAM system. We formulate the feature selection as a combinatorial optimization problem under a cardinality constraint to preserve the information matrix's spectral attributes. The stochastic-greedy algorithm is applied to approximate the optimal results in real-time. To avoid ill-conditioned estimation, we also propose a general strategy to evaluate the environment's degeneracy and modify the feature number online. The proposed feature selector is integrated into a multi-LiDAR SLAM system. We validate this enhanced system with extensive experiments covering various scenarios on two sensor setups and computation platforms. We show that our approach exhibits low localization error and speedup compared to the state-of-the-art L-SLAM systems. Robust Odometry and Mapping for Multi-LiDAR Systems with Online Extrinsic Calibration

Combining multiple LiDARs enables a robot to maximize its perceptual awareness of environments and obtain sufficient measurements, which is promising for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). This paper proposes a system to achieve robust and simultaneous extrinsic calibration, odometry, and mapping for multiple LiDARs. Our approach starts with measurement preprocessing to extract edge and planar features from raw measurements. After a motion and extrinsic initialization procedure, a sliding window-based multi-LiDAR odometry runs onboard to estimate poses with online calibration refinement and convergence identification. We further develop a mapping algorithm to construct a global map and optimize poses with sufficient features together with a method to model and reduce data uncertainty. We validate our approach's performance with extensive experiments on ten sequences (4.60km total length) for the calibration and SLAM and compare them against the state-of-the-art. We demonstrate that the proposed work is a complete, robust, and extensible system for various multi-LiDAR setups. The Role of the Hercules Autonomous Vehicle During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Autonomous Logistic Vehicle for Contactless Goods Transportation

Since early 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly across the world. As at the date of writing this article, the disease has been globally reported in 223 countries and regions, infected over 108 million people and caused over 2.4 million deaths (https://covid19.who.int/, accessed on Feb. 17, 2021). Avoiding person-to-person transmission is an effective approach to control and prevent the pandemic. However, many daily activities, such as transporting goods in our daily life, inevitably involve person-to-person contact. Using an autonomous logistic vehicle to achieve contact-less goods transportation could alleviate this issue. For example, it can reduce the risk of virus transmission between the driver and customers. Moreover, many countries have imposed tough lockdown measures to reduce the virus transmission (e.g., retail, catering) during the pandemic, which causes inconveniences for human daily life. Autonomous vehicle can deliver the goods bought by humans, so that humans can get the goods without going out. These demands motivate us to develop an autonomous vehicle, named as Hercules, for contact-less goods transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The vehicle is evaluated through real-world delivering tasks under various traffic conditions.

Road Curb Detection Using A Novel Tensor Voting Algorithm

Road curb detection is very important and necessary for autonomous driving because it can improve the safety and robustness of robot navigation in the outdoor environment. In this paper, a novel road curb detection method based on tensor voting is presented. The proposed method processes the dense point cloud acquired using a 3D LiDAR. Firstly, we utilize a sparse tensor voting approach to extract the line and surface features. Then, we use an adaptive height threshold and a surface vector to extract the point clouds of the road curbs. Finally, we utilize the height threshold to segment different obstacles from the occupancy grid map. This also provides an effective way of generating high-definition maps. The experimental results illustrate that our proposed algorithm can detect road curbs with near real-time performance.

Robust Lane Marking Detection Algorithm Using Drivable Area Segmentation and Extended SLT

In this paper, a robust lane detection algorithm is proposed, where the vertical road profile of the road is estimated using dynamic programming from the v-disparity map and, based on the estimated profile, the road area is segmented. Since the lane markings are on the road area and any feature point above the ground will be a noise source for the lane detection, a mask is created for the road area to remove some of the noise for lane detection. The estimated mask is multiplied by the lane feature map in a bird's eye view (BEV). The lane feature points are extracted by using an extended version of symmetrical local threshold (SLT), which not only considers dark light dark transition (DLD) of the lane markings, like (SLT), but also considers parallelism on the lane marking borders. The segmentation then uses only the feature points that are on the road area. A maximum of two linear lane markings are detected using an efficient 1D Hough transform. Then, the detected linear lane markings are used to create a region of interest (ROI) for parabolic lane detection. Finally, based on the estimated region of interest, parabolic lane models are fitted using robust fitting. Due to the robust lane feature extraction and road area segmentation, the proposed algorithm robustly detects lane markings and achieves lane marking detection with an accuracy of 91% when tested on a sequence from the KITTI dataset.

Automatic Calibration of Dual-LiDARs Using Two Poles Stickered with Retro-Reflective Tape

Multi-LiDAR systems have been prevalently applied in modern autonomous vehicles to render a broad view of the environments. The rapid development of 5G wireless technologies has brought a breakthrough for current cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) applications. Therefore, a novel localization and perception system in which multiple LiDARs are mounted around cities for autonomous vehicles has been proposed. However, the existing calibration methods require specific hard-to-move markers, ego-motion, or good initial values given by users. In this paper, we present a novel approach that enables automatic multi-LiDAR calibration using two poles stickered with retro-reflective tape. This method does not depend on prior environmental information, initial values of the extrinsic parameters, or movable platforms like a car. We analyze the LiDAR-pole model, verify the feasibility of the algorithm through simulation data, and present a simple method to measure the calibration errors w.r.t the ground truth. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach gains better flexibility and higher accuracy when compared with the state-of-the-art approach.

Autonomous UAV Landing System Based on Visual Navigation

In this paper, we present an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) landing system based on visual navigation. We design the landmark as a topological pattern in order to enable the UAV to distinguish the landmark from the environment easily. In addition, a dynamic thresholding method is developed for image binarization to improve detection efficiency. The relative distance in the horizontal plane is calculated according to effective image information, and the relative height is obtained using a linear interpolation method. The landing experiments are performed on a static and a moving platform, respectively. The experimental results illustrate that our proposed landing system performs robustly and accurately.

A Robust Pavement Mapping System Based on Normal-Constrained Stereo Visual Odometry

Pavement condition is crucial for civil infrastructure maintenance. This task usually requires efficient road damage localization, which can be accomplished by the visual odometry system embedded in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, the state-of-the-art visual odometry and mapping methods suffer from large drift under the degeneration of the scene structure. To alleviate this issue, we integrate normal constraints into the visual odometry process, which greatly helps to avoid large drift. By parameterizing the normal vector on the tangential plane, the normal factors are coupled with traditional reprojection factors in the pose optimization procedure. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system. The overall absolute trajectory error is improved by approximately 20%, which indicates that the estimated trajectory is much more accurate than that obtained using other state-of-the-art methods.

Low-Cost GPS-Aided LiDAR State Estimation and Map Building

Using different sensors in an autonomous vehicle (AV) can provide multiple constraints to optimize AV location estimation. In this paper, we present a low-cost GPS-assisted LiDAR state estimation system for AVs. Firstly, we utilize LiDAR to obtain highly precise 3D geometry data. Next, we use an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to correct point cloud misalignment caused by incorrect place recognition. The estimated LiDAR odometry and IMU measurement are then jointly optimized. We use a lost-cost GPS instead of a real-time kinematic (RTK) module to refine the estimated LiDAR-inertial odometry. Our low-cost GPS and LiDAR complement each other, and can provide highly accurate vehicle location information. Moreover, a low-cost GPS is much cheaper than an RTK module, which reduces the overall AV sensor cost. Our experimental results demonstrate that our proposed GPS-aided LiDAR-inertial odometry system performs very accurately. The accuracy achieved when processing a dataset collected in an industrial zone is approximately 0.14 m.

Real-Time, Environmentally-Robust 3D LiDAR Localization

Localization, or position fixing, is an important problem in robotics research. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for long-term localization in a changing environment using 3D LiDAR. We first create the map of a real environment using GPS and LiDAR. Then, we divide the map into several small parts as the targets for cloud registration, which can not only improve the robustness but also reduce the registration time. PointLocalization allows us to fuse different kinds of odometers, which can optimize the accuracy and frequency of localization results. We evaluate our algorithm on an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) using LiDAR and a wheel encoder, and obtain the localization results at more than 20 Hz after fusion. The algorithm can also localize the UGV in a 180-degree field of view (FOV). Using an outdated map captured six months ago, this algorithm shows great robustness, and the test results show that it can achieve an accuracy of 10 cm. PointLocalization has been tested for a period of more than six months in a crowded factory and has operated successfully over a distance of more than 2000 km.

A Novel Dual-Lidar Calibration Algorithm Using Planar Surfaces

Multiple lidars are prevalently used on mobile vehicles for rendering a broad view to enhance the performance of localization and perception systems. However, precise calibration of multiple lidars is challenging since the feature correspondences in scan points cannot always provide enough constraints. To address this problem, the existing methods require fixed calibration targets in scenes or rely exclusively on additional sensors. In this paper, we present a novel method that enables automatic lidar calibration without these restrictions. Three linearly independent planar surfaces appearing in surroundings is utilized to find correspondences. Two components are developed to ensure the extrinsic parameters to be found: a closed-form solver for initialization and an optimizer for refinement by minimizing a nonlinear cost function. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the high accuracy of our calibration approach with the rotation and translation errors smaller than 0.05rad and 0.1m respectively.

Road Crack Detection Using Deep Convolutional Neural Network and Adaptive Thresholding

Crack is one of the most common road distresses which may pose road safety hazards. Generally, crack detection is performed by either certified inspectors or structural engineers. This task is, however, time-consuming, subjective and labor-intensive. In this paper, we propose a novel road crack detection algorithm based on deep learning and adaptive image segmentation. Firstly, a deep convolutional neural network is trained to determine whether an image contains cracks or not. The images containing cracks are then smoothed using bilateral filtering, which greatly minimizes the number of noisy pixels. Finally, we utilize an adaptive thresholding method to extract the cracks from road surface. The experimental results illustrate that our network can classify images with an accuracy of 99.92%, and the cracks can be successfully extracted from the images using our proposed thresholding algorithm.
