Symphony Generation with Permutation Invariant Language ModelJiafeng Liu, Yuanliang Dong, Zehua Cheng et al.
In this work, we propose a permutation invariant language model, SymphonyNet, as a solution for symbolic symphony music generation. We propose a novel Multi-track Multi-instrument Repeatable (MMR) representation for symphonic music and model the music sequence using a Transformer-based auto-regressive language model with specific 3-D positional embedding. To overcome length overflow when modeling extra-long symphony tokens, we also propose a modified Byte Pair Encoding algorithm (Music BPE) for music tokens and introduce a novel linear transformer decoder architecture as a backbone. Meanwhile, we train the decoder to learn automatic orchestration as a joint task by masking instrument information from the input. We also introduce a large-scale symbolic symphony dataset for the advance of symphony generation research. Empirical results show that the proposed approach can generate coherent, novel, complex and harmonious symphony as a pioneer solution for multi-track multi-instrument symbolic music generation.

Distributed Affine Body Dynamics with Adaptive ConsensusJiafeng Liu, Wenhui Zhou, Xinming Pei et al.
Affine Body Dynamics (ABD) within the Incremental Potential Contact (IPC) framework provides accurate simulation of extremely stiff solids exhibiting near-rigid behavior, with strict non-penetration guarantees. However, IPC's globally coupled barrier constraints hinder scalable execution across multiple GPUs and compute nodes. We propose a distributed formulation of ABD using a consensus-based ADMM scheme. Each compute node solves its local ABD subproblem in parallel, followed by a global consensus step that enforces consistency among shared boundary bodies. The proposed method preserves IPC-level robustness and global consistency under distributed execution. Experiments demonstrate stable convergence, non-penetration, and efficient scaling on large-scale scenes across multiple nodes.

CWS-PResUNet: Music Source Separation with Channel-wise Subband Phase-aware ResUNetHaohe Liu, Qiuqiang Kong, Jiafeng Liu
Music source separation (MSS) shows active progress with deep learning models in recent years. Many MSS models perform separations on spectrograms by estimating bounded ratio masks and reusing the phases of the mixture. When using convolutional neural networks (CNN), weights are usually shared within a spectrogram during convolution regardless of the different patterns between frequency bands. In this study, we propose a new MSS model, channel-wise subband phase-aware ResUNet (CWS-PResUNet), to decompose signals into subbands and estimate an unbound complex ideal ratio mask (cIRM) for each source. CWS-PResUNet utilizes a channel-wise subband (CWS) feature to limit unnecessary global weights sharing on the spectrogram and reduce computational resource consumptions. The saved computational cost and memory can in turn allow for a larger architecture. On the MUSDB18HQ test set, we propose a 276-layer CWS-PResUNet and achieve state-of-the-art (SoTA) performance on vocals with an 8.92 signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR) score. By combining CWS-PResUNet and Demucs, our ByteMSS system ranks the 2nd on vocals score and 5th on average score in the 2021 ISMIR Music Demixing (MDX) Challenge limited training data track (leaderboard A). Khala: Scaling Acoustic Token Language Models Toward High-Fidelity Music GenerationJiafeng Liu, Yuanliang Dong, Hongjia Liu et al.
A common design pattern in high-quality music generation is to handle structure and fidelity in different representation spaces: a generator first models high-level structure, followed by diffusion-based or neural decoding stages that reconstruct fine details. In this work, we explore an alternative view: both may be progressively modeled within a single deep acoustic-token hierarchy. To study this, we build a 64-layer residual vector quantization (RVQ) acoustic representation and propose a two-stage coarse-to-fine generation framework. A backbone model first generates coarse acoustic tokens for the full track, and a super-resolution model then completes finer tokens within the same acoustic token space. The super-resolution stage works at full-track scale and refines tokens layer by layer while running in parallel over time, leading to a fixed 62-step inference process. To jointly improve lyric alignment and fine-detail reconstruction, we further introduce hybrid-attention training: the alignment objective uses causal attention, while layer-wise refinement uses full attention. A key finding is that text--vocal alignment can emerge within pure acoustic-token language modeling, without requiring a separate semantic token stage. Moreover, initializing the super-resolution model from the trained backbone significantly improves convergence and final quality. Taken together, our results suggest that high-quality music generation can be effectively pursued without separating structure and fidelity into heterogeneous representation spaces. Instead, both can be progressively modeled within a unified acoustic-token hierarchy, pointing toward a simpler and more unified path to high-quality music generation.

CLaMP 2: Multimodal Music Information Retrieval Across 101 Languages Using Large Language ModelsShangda Wu, Yashan Wang, Ruibin Yuan et al.
Challenges in managing linguistic diversity and integrating various musical modalities are faced by current music information retrieval systems. These limitations reduce their effectiveness in a global, multimodal music environment. To address these issues, we introduce CLaMP 2, a system compatible with 101 languages that supports both ABC notation (a text-based musical notation format) and MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) for music information retrieval. CLaMP 2, pre-trained on 1.5 million ABC-MIDI-text triplets, includes a multilingual text encoder and a multimodal music encoder aligned via contrastive learning. By leveraging large language models, we obtain refined and consistent multilingual descriptions at scale, significantly reducing textual noise and balancing language distribution. Our experiments show that CLaMP 2 achieves state-of-the-art results in both multilingual semantic search and music classification across modalities, thus establishing a new standard for inclusive and global music information retrieval.

HMID-Net: An Exploration of Masked Image Modeling and Knowledge Distillation in Hyperbolic SpaceChangli Wang, Fang Yin, Jiafeng Liu et al.
Visual and semantic concepts are often structured in a hierarchical manner. For instance, textual concept `cat' entails all images of cats. A recent study, MERU, successfully adapts multimodal learning techniques from Euclidean space to hyperbolic space, effectively capturing the visual-semantic hierarchy. However, a critical question remains: how can we more efficiently train a model to capture and leverage this hierarchy? In this paper, we propose the Hyperbolic Masked Image and Distillation Network (HMID-Net), a novel and efficient method that integrates Masked Image Modeling (MIM) and knowledge distillation techniques within hyperbolic space. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach to leverage MIM and knowledge distillation in hyperbolic space to train highly efficient models. In addition, we introduce a distillation loss function specifically designed to facilitate effective knowledge transfer in hyperbolic space. Our experiments demonstrate that MIM and knowledge distillation techniques in hyperbolic space can achieve the same remarkable success as in Euclidean space. Extensive evaluations show that our method excels across a wide range of downstream tasks, significantly outperforming existing models like MERU and CLIP in both image classification and retrieval.

Lingxi: A Diversity-aware Chinese Modern Poetry Generation SystemXinran Zhang, Maosong Sun, Jiafeng Liu et al.
Poetry generation has been a difficult task in natural language processing. Unlike plain neural text generation tasks, poetry has a high requirement for novelty, since an easily-understood sentence with too many high frequency words might not be considered as poetic, while adequately ambiguous sentences with low frequency words can possibly be novel and creative. Inspired by this, we present Lingxi, a diversity-aware Chinese modern poetry generation system. We propose nucleus sampling with randomized head (NS-RH) algorithm, which randomizes the high frequency part ("head") of the predicted distribution, in order to emphasize on the "comparatively low frequency" words. The proposed algorithm can significantly increase the novelty of generated poetry compared with traditional sampling methods. The permutation of distribution is controllable by tuning the filtering parameter that determines the "head" to permutate, achieving diversity-aware sampling. We find that even when a large portion of filtered vocabulary is randomized, it can actually generate fluent poetry but with notably higher novelty. We also propose a semantic-similarity-based rejection sampling algorithm, which creates longer and more informative context on the basis of the short input poetry title while maintaining high semantic similarity to the title, alleviating the off-topic issue.

Optimal Embedding Calibration for Symbolic Music SimilarityXinran Zhang, Maosong Sun, Jiafeng Liu et al.
In natural language processing (NLP), the semantic similarity task requires large-scale, high-quality human-annotated labels for fine-tuning or evaluation. By contrast, in cases of music similarity, such labels are expensive to collect and largely dependent on the annotator's artistic preferences. Recent research has demonstrated that embedding calibration technique can greatly increase semantic similarity performance of the pre-trained language model without fine-tuning. However, it is yet unknown which calibration method is the best and how much performance improvement can be achieved. To address these issues, we propose using composer information to construct labels for automatically evaluating music similarity. Under this paradigm, we discover the optimal combination of embedding calibration which achieves superior metrics than the baseline methods.

Improving Diversity of Neural Text Generation via Inverse Probability WeightingXinran Zhang, Maosong Sun, Jiafeng Liu et al.
The neural text generation suffers from the text degeneration issue such as repetition. Traditional stochastic sampling methods only focus on truncating the unreliable "tail" of the distribution, and do not address the "head" part, which we show might contain tedious or even repetitive candidates with high probability that lead to repetition loops. They also do not consider the issue that human text does not always favor high-probability words. Inspired by these, in this work we propose a heuristic sampling method. We propose to use interquartile range of the predicted distribution to determine the "head" part, then permutate and rescale the "head" with inverse probability. This aims at decreasing the probability for the tedious and possibly repetitive candidates with higher probability, and increasing the probability for the rational but more surprising candidates with lower probability. The proposed algorithm provides a reasonable permutation on the predicted distribution which enhances diversity without compromising rationality of the distribution. We use pre-trained language model to compare our algorithm with traditional methods. Results show that our algorithm can effectively increase the diversity of generated samples while achieving close resemblance to human text.
