FreshLLMs: Refreshing Large Language Models with Search Engine Augmentation

Tu Vu, Mohit Iyyer, Xuezhi Wang et al.

Most large language models (LLMs) are trained once and never updated; thus, they lack the ability to dynamically adapt to our ever-changing world. In this work, we perform a detailed study of the factuality of LLM-generated text in the context of answering questions that test current world knowledge. Specifically, we introduce FreshQA, a novel dynamic QA benchmark encompassing a diverse range of question and answer types, including questions that require fast-changing world knowledge as well as questions with false premises that need to be debunked. We benchmark a diverse array of both closed and open-source LLMs under a two-mode evaluation procedure that allows us to measure both correctness and hallucination. Through human evaluations involving more than 50K judgments, we shed light on limitations of these models and demonstrate significant room for improvement: for instance, all models (regardless of model size) struggle on questions that involve fast-changing knowledge and false premises. Motivated by these results, we present FreshPrompt, a simple few-shot prompting method that substantially boosts the performance of an LLM on FreshQA by incorporating relevant and up-to-date information retrieved from a search engine into the prompt. Our experiments show that FreshPrompt outperforms both competing search engine-augmented prompting methods such as Self-Ask (Press et al., 2022) as well as commercial systems such as Perplexity.AI. Further analysis of FreshPrompt reveals that both the number of retrieved evidences and their order play a key role in influencing the correctness of LLM-generated answers. Additionally, instructing the LLM to generate concise and direct answers helps reduce hallucination compared to encouraging more verbose answers. To facilitate future work, we release FreshQA at github.com/freshllms/freshqa and commit to updating it at regular intervals.

Ming-UniAudio: Speech LLM for Joint Understanding, Generation and Editing with Unified Representation

Canxiang Yan, Chunxiang Jin, Dawei Huang et al.

Existing speech models suffer from competing requirements on token representations by understanding and generation tasks. This discrepancy in representation prevents speech language models from performing instruction-based free-form editing. To solve this challenge, we introduce a novel framework that unifies speech understanding, generation, and editing. The core of our unified model is a unified continuous speech tokenizer MingTok-Audio, the first continuous tokenizer to effectively integrate semantic and acoustic features, which makes it suitable for both understanding and generation tasks. Based on this unified continuous audio tokenizer, we developed the speech language model Ming-UniAudio, which achieved a balance between generation and understanding capabilities. Ming-UniAudio sets new state-of-the-art (SOTA) records on 8 out of 12 metrics on the ContextASR benchmark. Notably, for Chinese voice cloning, it achieves a highly competitive Seed-TTS-WER of 0.95. Leveraging this foundational model, we further trained a dedicated speech editing model Ming-UniAudio-Edit, the first speech language model that enables universal, free-form speech editing guided solely by natural language instructions, handling both semantic and acoustic modifications without timestamp condition. To rigorously assess the editing capability and establish a foundation for future research, we introduce Ming-Freeform-Audio-Edit, the first comprehensive benchmark tailored for instruction-based free-form speech editing, featuring diverse scenarios and evaluation dimensions spanning semantic correctness, acoustic quality, and instruction alignment. We open-sourced the continuous audio tokenizer, the unified foundational model, and the free-form instruction-based editing model to facilitate the development of unified audio understanding, generation, and manipulation.

MSR-86K: An Evolving, Multilingual Corpus with 86,300 Hours of Transcribed Audio for Speech Recognition Research

Song Li, Yongbin You, Xuezhi Wang et al.

Recently, multilingual artificial intelligence assistants, exemplified by ChatGPT, have gained immense popularity. As a crucial gateway to human-computer interaction, multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) has also garnered significant attention, as evidenced by systems like Whisper. However, the proprietary nature of the training data has impeded researchers' efforts to study multilingual ASR. This paper introduces MSR-86K, an evolving, large-scale multilingual corpus for speech recognition research. The corpus is derived from publicly accessible videos on YouTube, comprising 15 languages and a total of 86,300 hours of transcribed ASR data. We also introduce how to use the MSR-86K corpus and other open-source corpora to train a robust multilingual ASR model that is competitive with Whisper. MSR-86K will be publicly released on HuggingFace, and we believe that such a large corpus will pave new avenues for research in multilingual ASR.

Comprehensive Metapath-based Heterogeneous Graph Transformer for Gene-Disease Association Prediction

Wentao Cui, Shoubo Li, Chen Fang et al.

Discovering gene-disease associations is crucial for understanding disease mechanisms, yet identifying these associations remains challenging due to the time and cost of biological experiments. Computational methods are increasingly vital for efficient and scalable gene-disease association prediction. Graph-based learning models, which leverage node features and network relationships, are commonly employed for biomolecular predictions. However, existing methods often struggle to effectively integrate node features, heterogeneous structures, and semantic information. To address these challenges, we propose COmprehensive MEtapath-based heterogeneous graph Transformer(COMET) for predicting gene-disease associations. COMET integrates diverse datasets to construct comprehensive heterogeneous networks, initializing node features with BioGPT. We define seven Metapaths and utilize a transformer framework to aggregate Metapath instances, capturing global contexts and long-distance dependencies. Through intra- and inter-metapath aggregation using attention mechanisms, COMET fuses latent vectors from multiple Metapaths to enhance GDA prediction accuracy. Our method demonstrates superior robustness compared to state-of-the-art approaches. Ablation studies and visualizations validate COMET's effectiveness, providing valuable insights for advancing human health research.

TWIST-GAN: Towards Wavelet Transform and Transferred GAN for Spatio-Temporal Single Image Super Resolution

Fayaz Ali Dharejo, Farah Deeba, Yuanchun Zhou et al.

Single Image Super-resolution (SISR) produces high-resolution images with fine spatial resolutions from aremotely sensed image with low spatial resolution. Recently, deep learning and generative adversarial networks(GANs) have made breakthroughs for the challenging task of single image super-resolution (SISR). However, thegenerated image still suffers from undesirable artifacts such as, the absence of texture-feature representationand high-frequency information. We propose a frequency domain-based spatio-temporal remote sensingsingle image super-resolution technique to reconstruct the HR image combined with generative adversarialnetworks (GANs) on various frequency bands (TWIST-GAN). We have introduced a new method incorporatingWavelet Transform (WT) characteristics and transferred generative adversarial network. The LR image hasbeen split into various frequency bands by using the WT, whereas, the transfer generative adversarial networkpredicts high-frequency components via a proposed architecture. Finally, the inverse transfer of waveletsproduces a reconstructed image with super-resolution. The model is first trained on an external DIV2 Kdataset and validated with the UC Merceed Landsat remote sensing dataset and Set14 with each image sizeof 256x256. Following that, transferred GANs are used to process spatio-temporal remote sensing images inorder to minimize computation cost differences and improve texture information. The findings are comparedqualitatively and qualitatively with the current state-of-art approaches. In addition, we saved about 43% of theGPU memory during training and accelerated the execution of our simplified version by eliminating batchnormalization layers.

ToTTo: A Controlled Table-To-Text Generation Dataset

Ankur P. Parikh, Xuezhi Wang, Sebastian Gehrmann et al.

We present ToTTo, an open-domain English table-to-text dataset with over 120,000 training examples that proposes a controlled generation task: given a Wikipedia table and a set of highlighted table cells, produce a one-sentence description. To obtain generated targets that are natural but also faithful to the source table, we introduce a dataset construction process where annotators directly revise existing candidate sentences from Wikipedia. We present systematic analyses of our dataset and annotation process as well as results achieved by several state-of-the-art baselines. While usually fluent, existing methods often hallucinate phrases that are not supported by the table, suggesting that this dataset can serve as a useful research benchmark for high-precision conditional text generation.
