Can I use this publicly available dataset to build commercial AI software? -- A Case Study on Publicly Available Image Datasets

Publicly available datasets are one of the key drivers for commercial AI software. The use of publicly available datasets is governed by dataset licenses. These dataset licenses outline the rights one is entitled to on a given dataset and the obligations that one must fulfil to enjoy such rights without any license compliance violations. Unlike standardized Open Source Software (OSS) licenses, existing dataset licenses are defined in an ad-hoc manner and do not clearly outline the rights and obligations associated with their usage. Further, a public dataset may be hosted in multiple locations and created from multiple data sources each of which may have different licenses. Hence, existing approaches on checking OSS license compliance cannot be used. In this paper, we propose a new approach to assessing the potential license compliance violations if a given publicly available dataset were to be used for building commercial AI software. We conduct a case study with our approach on 6 commonly used publicly available image datasets. Our results show that there exists potential risks of license violations associated with all of the studied datasets if they were used for commercial purposes.

Google Summer of Code: Student Motivations and Contributions

Several open source software (OSS) projects expect to foster newcomers' onboarding and to receive contributions by participating in engagement programs, like Summers of Code. However, there is little empirical evidence showing why students join such programs. In this paper, we study the well-established Google Summer of Code (GSoC), which is a 3-month OSS engagement program that offers stipends and mentors to students willing to contribute to OSS projects. We combined a survey (students and mentors) and interviews (students) to understand what motivates students to enter GSoC. Our results show that students enter GSoC for an enriching experience, not necessarily to become frequent contributors. Our data suggest that, while the stipends are an important motivator, the students participate for work experience and the ability to attach the name of the supporting organization to their resumés. We also discuss practical implications for students, mentors, OSS projects, and Summer of Code programs.

On the Impact of Micro-Packages: An Empirical Study of the npm JavaScript Ecosystem

The rise of user-contributed Open Source Software (OSS) ecosystems demonstrate their prevalence in the software engineering discipline. Libraries work together by depending on each other across the ecosystem. From these ecosystems emerges a minimized library called a micro-package. Micro- packages become problematic when breaks in a critical ecosystem dependency ripples its effects to unsuspecting users. In this paper, we investigate the impact of micro-packages in the npm JavaScript ecosystem. Specifically, we conducted an empirical in- vestigation with 169,964 JavaScript npm packages to understand (i) the widespread phenomena of micro-packages, (ii) the size dependencies inherited by a micro-package and (iii) the developer usage cost (ie., fetch, install, load times) of using a micro-package. Results of the study find that micro-packages form a significant portion of the npm ecosystem. Apart from the ease of readability and comprehension, we show that some micro-packages have long dependency chains and incur just as much usage costs as other npm packages. We envision that this work motivates the need for developers to be aware of how sensitive their third-party dependencies are to critical changes in the software ecosystem.

Modeling Library Dependencies and Updates in Large Software Repository Universes

Popular (re)use of third-party open-source software (OSS) is evidence of the impact of hosting repositories like maven on software development today. Updating libraries is crucial, with recent studies highlighting the associated vulnerabilities with aging OSS libraries. The decision to migrate to a newer library can range from trivial (security threat) to complex (assessment of work required to accommodate the changes). By leveraging the `wisdom of the software repository crowd' we propose a simple and efficient approach to recommending `consented' library updates. Our Software Universe Graph (SUG) models library dependency and update information mined from super repositories to provide different metrics and visualizations that aid in the update decision. To evaluate, we first constructed a SUG from 188,951 nodes of 6,374 maven unique artifacts. Then, we demonstrate how our metrics and visualizations are applied through real-world examples. As an extension, we show how the SUG can compare dependencies between different super repositories. From a sample of 100 GitHub applications, our method found that on average 79% similar overlapping dependencies combinations exist between the maven and github super repository universes.

Code Clone Matching: A Practical and Effective Approach to Find Code Snippets

Finding the same or similar code snippets in source code is one of fundamental activities in software maintenance. Text-based pattern matching tools such as grep is frequently used for such purpose, but making proper queries for the expected result is not easy. Code clone detectors could be used but their features and result are generally excessive. In this paper, we propose Code Clone matching (CC matching for short) that employs a combination of token-based clone detection and meta-patterns enhanced with meta-tokens. The user simply gives a query code snippet possibly with a few meta-tokens and then gets the resulting snippets, forming type 1, 2, or 3 code clone pairs between the query and result. By using a code snippet with meta-tokens as the query, the resulting matches are well controlled by the users. CC matching has been implemented as a practical and efficient tool named ccgrep, with grep-like user interface. The evaluation shows that ccgrep~ is a very effective to find various kinds of code snippets.

Predicting the Programming Language of Questions and Snippets of StackOverflow Using Natural Language Processing

Stack Overflow is the most popular Q&A website among software developers. As a platform for knowledge sharing and acquisition, the questions posted in Stack Overflow usually contain a code snippet. Stack Overflow relies on users to properly tag the programming language of a question and it simply assumes that the programming language of the snippets inside a question is the same as the tag of the question itself. In this paper, we propose a classifier to predict the programming language of questions posted in Stack Overflow using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML). The classifier achieves an accuracy of 91.1% in predicting the 24 most popular programming languages by combining features from the title, body and the code snippets of the question. We also propose a classifier that only uses the title and body of the question and has an accuracy of 81.1%. Finally, we propose a classifier of code snippets only that achieves an accuracy of 77.7%. These results show that deploying Machine Learning techniques on the combination of text and the code snippets of a question provides the best performance. These results demonstrate also that it is possible to identify the programming language of a snippet of few lines of source code. We visualize the feature space of two programming languages Java and SQL in order to identify some special properties of information inside the questions in Stack Overflow corresponding to these languages.

SCC: Automatic Classification of Code Snippets

Determining the programming language of a source code file has been considered in the research community; it has been shown that Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms can be effective in identifying the programming language of source code files. However, determining the programming language of a code snippet or a few lines of source code is still a challenging task. Online forums such as Stack Overflow and code repositories such as GitHub contain a large number of code snippets. In this paper, we describe Source Code Classification (SCC), a classifier that can identify the programming language of code snippets written in 21 different programming languages. A Multinomial Naive Bayes (MNB) classifier is employed which is trained using Stack Overflow posts. It is shown to achieve an accuracy of 75% which is higher than that with Programming Languages Identification (PLI a proprietary online classifier of snippets) whose accuracy is only 55.5%. The average score for precision, recall and the F1 score with the proposed tool are 0.76, 0.75 and 0.75, respectively. In addition, it can distinguish between code snippets from a family of programming languages such as C, C++ and C#, and can also identify the programming language version such as C# 3.0, C# 4.0 and C# 5.0.

An Empirical Study on the Impact of Refactoring Activities on Evolving Client-Used APIs

Context: Refactoring is recognized as an effective practice to maintain evolving software systems. For software libraries, we study how library developers refactor their Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), especially when it impacts client users by breaking an API of the library. Objective: Our work aims to understand how clients that use a library API are affected by refactoring activities. We target popular libraries that potentially impact more library client users. Method: We distinguish between library APIs based on their client-usage (refereed to as client-used APIs) in order to understand the extent to which API breakages relate to refactorings. Our tool-based approach allows for a large-scale study across eight libraries (i.e., totaling 183 consecutive versions) with around 900 clients projects. Results: We find that library maintainers are less likely to break client-used API classes. Quantitatively, we find that refactoring activities break less than 37% of all client-used APIs. In a more qualitative analysis, we show two documented cases of where non-refactoring API breaking changes are motivated other maintenance issues (i.e., bug fix and new features) and involve more complex refactoring operations. Conclusion: Using our automated approach, we find that library developers are less likely to break APIs and tend to break client-used APIs when addressing these maintenance issues.

Do Developers Update Their Library Dependencies? An Empirical Study on the Impact of Security Advisories on Library Migration

Third-party library reuse has become common practice in contemporary software development, as it includes several benefits for developers. Library dependencies are constantly evolving, with newly added features and patches that fix bugs in older versions. To take full advantage of third-party reuse, developers should always keep up to date with the latest versions of their library dependencies. In this paper, we investigate the extent of which developers update their library dependencies. Specifically, we conducted an empirical study on library migration that covers over 4,600 GitHub software projects and 2,700 library dependencies. Results show that although many of these systems rely heavily on dependencies, 81.5% of the studied systems still keep their outdated dependencies. In the case of updating a vulnerable dependency, the study reveals that affected developers are not likely to respond to a security advisory. Surveying these developers, we find that 69% of the interviewees claim that they were unaware of their vulnerable dependencies. Furthermore, developers are not likely to prioritize library updates, citing it as extra effort and added responsibility. This study concludes that even though third-party reuse is commonplace, the practice of updating a dependency is not as common for many developers.
