A Prototype-Based Neural Network for Image Anomaly Detection and LocalizationChao Huang, Zhao Kang, Hong Wu
Image anomaly detection and localization perform not only image-level anomaly classification but also locate pixel-level anomaly regions. Recently, it has received much research attention due to its wide application in various fields. This paper proposes ProtoAD, a prototype-based neural network for image anomaly detection and localization. First, the patch features of normal images are extracted by a deep network pre-trained on nature images. Then, the prototypes of the normal patch features are learned by non-parametric clustering. Finally, we construct an image anomaly localization network (ProtoAD) by appending the feature extraction network with $L2$ feature normalization, a $1\times1$ convolutional layer, a channel max-pooling, and a subtraction operation. We use the prototypes as the kernels of the $1\times1$ convolutional layer; therefore, our neural network does not need a training phase and can conduct anomaly detection and localization in an end-to-end manner. Extensive experiments on two challenging industrial anomaly detection datasets, MVTec AD and BTAD, demonstrate that ProtoAD achieves competitive performance compared to the state-of-the-art methods with a higher inference speed. A Unified and Efficient Coordinating Framework for Autonomous DBMS TuningXinyi Zhang, Zhuo Chang, Hong Wu et al. · pku, tencent-ai
Recently using machine learning (ML) based techniques to optimize modern database management systems has attracted intensive interest from both industry and academia. With an objective to tune a specific component of a DBMS (e.g., index selection, knobs tuning), the ML-based tuning agents have shown to be able to find better configurations than experienced database administrators. However, one critical yet challenging question remains unexplored -- how to make those ML-based tuning agents work collaboratively. Existing methods do not consider the dependencies among the multiple agents, and the model used by each agent only studies the effect of changing the configurations in a single component. To tune different components for DBMS, a coordinating mechanism is needed to make the multiple agents cognizant of each other. Also, we need to decide how to allocate the limited tuning budget among the agents to maximize the performance. Such a decision is difficult to make since the distribution of the reward for each agent is unknown and non-stationary. In this paper, we study the above question and present a unified coordinating framework to efficiently utilize existing ML-based agents. First, we propose a message propagation protocol that specifies the collaboration behaviors for agents and encapsulates the global tuning messages in each agent's model. Second, we combine Thompson Sampling, a well-studied reinforcement learning algorithm with a memory buffer so that our framework can allocate budget judiciously in a non-stationary environment. Our framework defines the interfaces adapted to a broad class of ML-based tuning agents, yet simple enough for integration with existing implementations and future extensions. We show that it can effectively utilize different ML-based agents and find better configurations with 1.4~14.1X speedups on the workload execution time compared with baselines.

End-To-End Audiovisual Feature Fusion for Active Speaker DetectionFiseha B. Tesema, Zheyuan Lin, Shiqiang Zhu et al.
Active speaker detection plays a vital role in human-machine interaction. Recently, a few end-to-end audiovisual frameworks emerged. However, these models' inference time was not explored and are not applicable for real-time applications due to their complexity and large input size. In addition, they explored a similar feature extraction strategy that employs the ConvNet on audio and visual inputs. This work presents a novel two-stream end-to-end framework fusing features extracted from images via VGG-M with raw Mel Frequency Cepstrum Coefficients features extracted from the audio waveform. The network has two BiGRU layers attached to each stream to handle each stream's temporal dynamic before fusion. After fusion, one BiGRU layer is attached to model the joint temporal dynamics. The experiment result on the AVA-ActiveSpeaker dataset indicates that our new feature extraction strategy shows more robustness to noisy signals and better inference time than models that employed ConvNet on both modalities. The proposed model predicts within 44.41 ms, which is fast enough for real-time applications. Our best-performing model attained 88.929% accuracy, nearly the same detection result as state-of-the-art -work.

ReST-KV: Robust KV Cache Eviction with Layer-wise Output Reconstruction and Spatial-Temporal SmoothingYongqi An, Chang Lu, Kuan Zhu et al.
Large language models (LLMs) face growing challenges in efficient generative inference due to the increasing memory demands of Key-Value (KV) caches, especially for long sequences. Existing eviction methods typically retain KV pairs with high attention weights but overlook the impact of attention redistribution caused by token removal, as well as the spatial-temporal dynamics in KV selection. In this paper, we propose ReST-KV, a robust KV eviction method that combines layer-wise output Reconstruction and Spatial-Temporal smoothing to provide a more comprehensive perspective for the KV cache eviction task. Specifically, ReST-KV formulates KV cache eviction as an optimization problem that minimizes output discrepancies through efficient layer-wise reconstruction. By directly modeling how each token's removal affects the model output, our method naturally captures attention redistribution effects, going beyond simplistic reliance on raw attention weights. To further enhance robustness, we design exponential moving average smoothing to handle temporal variations and an adaptive window-based mechanism to capture spatial patterns. Our method, ReST-KV, significantly advances performance on long-context benchmarks. It surpasses state-of-the-art baselines by 2.58% on LongBench and 15.2% on RULER. Additionally, ReST-KV consistently outperforms existing methods on Needle-in-a-Haystack and InfiniteBench, all while achieving a remarkable 10.61$\times$ reduction in decoding latency at 128k context length. APCD: Adaptive Path-Contrastive Decoding for Reliable Large Language Model GenerationTianyu Zheng, Hong Wu, Jiaji Zhong
Large language models (LLMs) often suffer from hallucinations due to error accumulation in autoregressive decoding, where suboptimal early token choices misguide subsequent generation. Although multi-path decoding can improve robustness by exploring alternative trajectories, existing methods lack principled strategies for determining when to branch and how to regulate inter-path interactions. We propose Adaptive Path-Contrastive Decoding (APCD), a multi-path decoding framework that improves output reliability through adaptive exploration and controlled path interaction. APCD consists of two components: (1) Entropy-Driven Path Expansion, which delays branching until predictive uncertainty - measured by Shannon entropy over top candidate tokens - indicates multiple plausible continuations; and (2) Divergence-Aware Path Contrast, which encourages diverse reasoning trajectories while dynamically attenuating inter-path influence as prediction distributions diverge. Experiments on eight benchmarks demonstrate improved factual accuracy while maintaining decoding efficiency. Our code is available at https://github.com/zty-king/APCD.

SilverTorch: A Unified Model-based System to Democratize Large-Scale Recommendation on GPUsBi Xue, Hong Wu, Lei Chen et al.
Serving deep learning based recommendation models (DLRM) at scale is challenging. Existing approaches rely on dedicated ANN indexing and filtering services on CPUs, suffering from non-negligible costs and missing co-design opportunities. Such inefficiency makes them difficult to support complex model architectures, such as learned similarities and multi-task retrieval. In this paper, we present SilverTorch, a model-based serving system that brings all components into one unified model. It unifies model serving by replacing standalone indexing and filtering services with model layers. We propose a model-based GPU Bloom index for feature filtering and a fused Int8 ANN kernel for nearest neighbor search. Through co-design of the ANN search and feature filtering, we reduce GPU memory usage and eliminate computation. Benefiting from this design, we scale up retrieval by introducing an OverArch scoring layer and a multi-task retrieval with a Value Model to aggregate scores. These advancements improve the retrieval accuracy and enable future studies for serving more complex models. Our evaluation on industry-scale datasets show that SilverTorch achieves up to 23.7\times higher throughput compared to the state-of-the-art approaches. We also demonstrate that SilverTorch solution is 13.35\times more cost-efficient than CPU-based solution while improving accuracy via serving more complex models. SilverTorch is deployed at scale, serving hundreds of models online and supporting recommendation for diverse applications.

Multi-modality transrectal ultrasound video classification for identification of clinically significant prostate cancerHong Wu, Juan Fu, Hongsheng Ye et al.
Prostate cancer is the most common noncutaneous cancer in the world. Recently, multi-modality transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) has increasingly become an effective tool for the guidance of prostate biopsies. With the aim of effectively identifying prostate cancer, we propose a framework for the classification of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) from multi-modality TRUS videos. The framework utilizes two 3D ResNet-50 models to extract features from B-mode images and shear wave elastography images, respectively. An adaptive spatial fusion module is introduced to aggregate two modalities' features. An orthogonal regularized loss is further used to mitigate feature redundancy. The proposed framework is evaluated on an in-house dataset containing 512 TRUS videos, and achieves favorable performance in identifying csPCa with an area under curve (AUC) of 0.84. Furthermore, the visualized class activation mapping (CAM) images generated from the proposed framework may provide valuable guidance for the localization of csPCa, thus facilitating the TRUS-guided targeted biopsy. Hybrid-View Attention Network for Clinically Significant Prostate Cancer Classification in Transrectal UltrasoundZetian Feng, Juan Fu, Xuebin Zou et al.
Prostate cancer (PCa) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in men, and accurate identification of clinically significant PCa (csPCa) is critical for timely intervention. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is widely used for prostate biopsy; however, its low contrast and anisotropic spatial resolution pose diagnostic challenges. To address these limitations, we propose a novel hybrid-view attention (HVA) network for csPCa classification in 3D TRUS that leverages complementary information from transverse and sagittal views. Our approach integrates a CNN-transformer hybrid architecture, where convolutional layers extract fine-grained local features and transformer-based HVA models global dependencies. Specifically, the HVA comprises intra-view attention to refine features within a single view and cross-view attention to incorporate complementary information across views. Furthermore, a hybrid-view adaptive fusion module dynamically aggregates features along both channel and spatial dimensions, enhancing the overall representation. Experiments are conducted on an in-house dataset containing 590 subjects who underwent prostate biopsy. Comparative and ablation results prove the efficacy of our method. Towards Multi-modality Fusion and Prototype-based Feature Refinement for Clinically Significant Prostate Cancer Classification in Transrectal UltrasoundHong Wu, Juan Fu, Hongsheng Ye et al.
Prostate cancer is a highly prevalent cancer and ranks as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men globally. Recently, the utilization of multi-modality transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) has gained significant traction as a valuable technique for guiding prostate biopsies. In this study, we propose a novel learning framework for clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) classification using multi-modality TRUS. The proposed framework employs two separate 3D ResNet-50 to extract distinctive features from B-mode and shear wave elastography (SWE). Additionally, an attention module is incorporated to effectively refine B-mode features and aggregate the extracted features from both modalities. Furthermore, we utilize few shot segmentation task to enhance the capacity of classification encoder. Due to the limited availability of csPCa masks, a prototype correction module is employed to extract representative prototypes of csPCa. The performance of the framework is assessed on a large-scale dataset consisting of 512 TRUS videos with biopsy-proved prostate cancer. The results demonstrate the strong capability in accurately identifying csPCa, achieving an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.86. Moreover, the framework generates visual class activation mapping (CAM), which can serve as valuable assistance for localizing csPCa. Feature Aggregation and Refinement Network for 2D AnatomicalLandmark DetectionYueyuan Ao, Hong Wu
Localization of anatomical landmarks is essential for clinical diagnosis, treatment planning, and research. In this paper, we propose a novel deep network, named feature aggregation and refinement network (FARNet), for the automatic detection of anatomical landmarks. To alleviate the problem of limited training data in the medical domain, our network adopts a deep network pre-trained on natural images as the backbone network and several popular networks have been compared. Our FARNet also includes a multi-scale feature aggregation module for multi-scale feature fusion and a feature refinement module for high-resolution heatmap regression. Coarse-to-fine supervisions are applied to the two modules to facilitate the end-to-end training. We further propose a novel loss function named Exponential Weighted Center loss for accurate heatmap regression, which focuses on the losses from the pixels near landmarks and suppresses the ones from far away. Our network has been evaluated on three publicly available anatomical landmark detection datasets, including cephalometric radiographs, hand radiographs, and spine radiographs, and achieves state-of-art performances on all three datasets. SeLIP: Similarity Enhanced Contrastive Language Image Pretraining for Multi-modal Head MRIZhiyang Liu, Dong Yang, Minghao Zhang et al.
Despite that deep learning (DL) methods have presented tremendous potential in many medical image analysis tasks, the practical applications of medical DL models are limited due to the lack of enough data samples with manual annotations. By noting that the clinical radiology examinations are associated with radiology reports that describe the images, we propose to develop a foundation model for multi-model head MRI by using contrastive learning on the images and the corresponding radiology findings. In particular, a contrastive learning framework is proposed, where a mixed syntax and semantic similarity matching metric is integrated to reduce the thirst of extreme large dataset in conventional contrastive learning framework. Our proposed similarity enhanced contrastive language image pretraining (SeLIP) is able to effectively extract more useful features. Experiments revealed that our proposed SeLIP performs well in many downstream tasks including image-text retrieval task, classification task, and image segmentation, which highlights the importance of considering the similarities among texts describing different images in developing medical image foundation models.

Cross-Modal Synergies: Unveiling the Potential of Motion-Aware Fusion Networks in Handling Dynamic and Static ReID ScenariosFuxi Ling, Hongye Liu, Guoqiang Huang et al.
Navigating the complexities of person re-identification (ReID) in varied surveillance scenarios, particularly when occlusions occur, poses significant challenges. We introduce an innovative Motion-Aware Fusion (MOTAR-FUSE) network that utilizes motion cues derived from static imagery to significantly enhance ReID capabilities. This network incorporates a dual-input visual adapter capable of processing both images and videos, thereby facilitating more effective feature extraction. A unique aspect of our approach is the integration of a motion consistency task, which empowers the motion-aware transformer to adeptly capture the dynamics of human motion. This technique substantially improves the recognition of features in scenarios where occlusions are prevalent, thereby advancing the ReID process. Our comprehensive evaluations across multiple ReID benchmarks, including holistic, occluded, and video-based scenarios, demonstrate that our MOTAR-FUSE network achieves superior performance compared to existing approaches.

StarWhisper Telescope: An AI framework for automating end-to-end astronomical observationsCunshi Wang, Yu Zhang, Yuyang Li et al.
The exponential growth of large-scale telescope arrays has boosted time-domain astronomy development but introduced operational bottlenecks, including labor-intensive observation planning, data processing, and real-time decision-making. Here we present the StarWhisper Telescope system, an AI agent framework automating end-to-end astronomical observations for surveys like the Nearby Galaxy Supernovae Survey. By integrating large language models with specialized function calls and modular workflows, StarWhisper Telescope autonomously generates site-specific observation lists, executes real-time image analysis via pipelines, and dynamically triggers follow-up proposals upon transient detection. The system reduces human intervention through automated observation planning, telescope controlling and data processing, while enabling seamless collaboration between amateur and professional astronomers. Deployed across Nearby Galaxy Supernovae Survey's network of 10 amateur telescopes, the StarWhisper Telescope has detected transients with promising response times relative to existing surveys. Furthermore, StarWhisper Telescope's scalable agent architecture provides a blueprint for future facilities like the Global Open Transient Telescope Array, where AI-driven autonomy will be critical for managing 60 telescopes.

A Narrative Review of Image Processing Techniques Related to Prostate UltrasoundHaiqiao Wang, Hong Wu, Zhuoyuan Wang et al.
Prostate cancer (PCa) poses a significant threat to men's health, with early diagnosis being crucial for improving prognosis and reducing mortality rates. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) plays a vital role in the diagnosis and image-guided intervention of PCa.To facilitate physicians with more accurate and efficient computer-assisted diagnosis and interventions, many image processing algorithms in TRUS have been proposed and achieved state-of-the-art performance in several tasks, including prostate gland segmentation, prostate image registration, PCa classification and detection, and interventional needle detection. The rapid development of these algorithms over the past two decades necessitates a comprehensive summary. In consequence, this survey provides a \textcolor{blue}{narrative } analysis of this field, outlining the evolution of image processing methods in the context of TRUS image analysis and meanwhile highlighting their relevant contributions. Furthermore, this survey discusses current challenges and suggests future research directions to possibly advance this field further.

Efficient Multi-View Fusion and Flexible Adaptation to View Missing in Cardiovascular System SignalsQihan Hu, Daomiao Wang, Hong Wu et al.
The progression of deep learning and the widespread adoption of sensors have facilitated automatic multi-view fusion (MVF) about the cardiovascular system (CVS) signals. However, prevalent MVF model architecture often amalgamates CVS signals from the same temporal step but different views into a unified representation, disregarding the asynchronous nature of cardiovascular events and the inherent heterogeneity across views, leading to catastrophic view confusion. Efficient training strategies specifically tailored for MVF models to attain comprehensive representations need simultaneous consideration. Crucially, real-world data frequently arrives with incomplete views, an aspect rarely noticed by researchers. Thus, the View-Centric Transformer (VCT) and Multitask Masked Autoencoder (M2AE) are specifically designed to emphasize the centrality of each view and harness unlabeled data to achieve superior fused representations. Additionally, we systematically define the missing-view problem for the first time and introduce prompt techniques to aid pretrained MVF models in flexibly adapting to various missing-view scenarios. Rigorous experiments involving atrial fibrillation detection, blood pressure estimation, and sleep staging-typical health monitoring tasks-demonstrate the remarkable advantage of our method in MVF compared to prevailing methodologies. Notably, the prompt technique requires finetuning less than 3% of the entire model's data, substantially fortifying the model's resilience to view missing while circumventing the need for complete retraining. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approaches, highlighting their potential for practical applications in cardiovascular health monitoring. Codes and models are released at URL.

Pixel Contrastive-Consistent Semi-Supervised Semantic SegmentationYuanyi Zhong, Bodi Yuan, Hong Wu et al.
We present a novel semi-supervised semantic segmentation method which jointly achieves two desiderata of segmentation model regularities: the label-space consistency property between image augmentations and the feature-space contrastive property among different pixels. We leverage the pixel-level L2 loss and the pixel contrastive loss for the two purposes respectively. To address the computational efficiency issue and the false negative noise issue involved in the pixel contrastive loss, we further introduce and investigate several negative sampling techniques. Extensive experiments demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance of our method (PC2Seg) with the DeepLab-v3+ architecture, in several challenging semi-supervised settings derived from the VOC, Cityscapes, and COCO datasets.

Full-Resolution Encoder-Decoder Networks with Multi-Scale Feature Fusion for Human Pose EstimationJie Ou, Mingjian Chen, Hong Wu
To achieve more accurate 2D human pose estimation, we extend the successful encoder-decoder network, simple baseline network (SBN), in three ways. To reduce the quantization errors caused by the large output stride size, two more decoder modules are appended to the end of the simple baseline network to get full output resolution. Then, the global context blocks (GCBs) are added to the encoder and decoder modules to enhance them with global context features. Furthermore, we propose a novel spatial-attention-based multi-scale feature collection and distribution module (SA-MFCD) to fuse and distribute multi-scale features to boost the pose estimation. Experimental results on the MS COCO dataset indicate that our network can remarkably improve the accuracy of human pose estimation over SBN, our network using ResNet34 as the backbone network can even achieve the same accuracy as SBN with ResNet152, and our networks can achieve superior results with big backbone networks.

Semantically Robust Unpaired Image Translation for Data with Unmatched Semantics StatisticsZhiwei Jia, Bodi Yuan, Kangkang Wang et al.
Many applications of unpaired image-to-image translation require the input contents to be preserved semantically during translations. Unaware of the inherently unmatched semantics distributions between source and target domains, existing distribution matching methods (i.e., GAN-based) can give undesired solutions. In particular, although producing visually reasonable outputs, the learned models usually flip the semantics of the inputs. To tackle this without using extra supervision, we propose to enforce the translated outputs to be semantically invariant w.r.t. small perceptual variations of the inputs, a property we call "semantic robustness". By optimizing a robustness loss w.r.t. multi-scale feature space perturbations of the inputs, our method effectively reduces semantics flipping and produces translations that outperform existing methods both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Efficient Human Pose Estimation with Depthwise Separable Convolution and Person Centroid Guided Joint GroupingJie Ou, Hong Wu
In this paper, we propose efficient and effective methods for 2D human pose estimation. A new ResBlock is proposed based on depthwise separable convolution and is utilized instead of the original one in Hourglass network. It can be further enhanced by replacing the vanilla depthwise convolution with a mixed depthwise convolution. Based on it, we propose a bottom-up multi-person pose estimation method. A rooted tree is used to represent human pose by introducing person centroid as the root which connects to all body joints directly or hierarchically. Two branches of sub-networks are used to predict the centroids, body joints and their offsets to their parent nodes. Joints are grouped by tracing along their offsets to the closest centroids. Experimental results on the MPII human dataset and the LSP dataset show that both our single-person and multi-person pose estimation methods can achieve competitive accuracies with low computational costs.

Automated Segmentation of Brain Gray Matter Nuclei on Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping Using Deep Convolutional Neural NetworkChao Chai, Pengchong Qiao, Bin Zhao et al.
Abnormal iron accumulation in the brain subcortical nuclei has been reported to be correlated to various neurodegenerative diseases, which can be measured through the magnetic susceptibility from the quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). To quantitively measure the magnetic susceptibility, the nuclei should be accurately segmented, which is a tedious task for clinicians. In this paper, we proposed a double-branch residual-structured U-Net (DB-ResUNet) based on 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically segment such brain gray matter nuclei. To better tradeoff between segmentation accuracy and the memory efficiency, the proposed DB-ResUNet fed image patches with high resolution and the patches with low resolution but larger field of view into the local and global branches, respectively. Experimental results revealed that by jointly using QSM and T$_\text{1}$ weighted imaging (T$_\text{1}$WI) as inputs, the proposed method was able to achieve better segmentation accuracy over its single-branch counterpart, as well as the conventional atlas-based method and the classical 3D-UNet structure. The susceptibility values and the volumes were also measured, which indicated that the measurements from the proposed DB-ResUNet are able to present high correlation with values from the manually annotated regions of interest.

MODRL/D-AM: Multiobjective Deep Reinforcement Learning Algorithm Using Decomposition and Attention Model for Multiobjective OptimizationHong Wu, Jiahai Wang, Zizhen Zhang
Recently, a deep reinforcement learning method is proposed to solve multiobjective optimization problem. In this method, the multiobjective optimization problem is decomposed to a number of single-objective optimization subproblems and all the subproblems are optimized in a collaborative manner. Each subproblem is modeled with a pointer network and the model is trained with reinforcement learning. However, when pointer network extracts the features of an instance, it ignores the underlying structure information of the input nodes. Thus, this paper proposes a multiobjective deep reinforcement learning method using decomposition and attention model to solve multiobjective optimization problem. In our method, each subproblem is solved by an attention model, which can exploit the structure features as well as node features of input nodes. The experiment results on multiobjective travelling salesman problem show the proposed algorithm achieves better performance compared with the previous method.

Hybrid Channel Based Pedestrian DetectionFiseha B. Tesema, Hong Wu, Mingjian Chen et al.
Pedestrian detection has achieved great improvements with the help of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). CNN can learn high-level features from input images, but the insufficient spatial resolution of CNN feature channels (feature maps) may cause a loss of information, which is harmful especially to small instances. In this paper, we propose a new pedestrian detection framework, which extends the successful RPN+BF framework to combine handcrafted features and CNN features. RoI-pooling is used to extract features from both handcrafted channels (e.g. HOG+LUV, CheckerBoards or RotatedFilters) and CNN channels. Since handcrafted channels always have higher spatial resolution than CNN channels, we apply RoI-pooling with larger output resolution to handcrafted channels to keep more detailed information. Our ablation experiments show that the developed handcrafted features can reach better detection accuracy than the CNN features extracted from the VGG-16 net, and a performance gain can be achieved by combining them. Experimental results on Caltech pedestrian dataset with the original annotations and the improved annotations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. When using a more advanced RPN in our framework, our approach can be further improved and get competitive results on both benchmarks.

Automatic acute ischemic stroke lesion segmentation using semi-supervised learningBin Zhao, Shuxue Ding, Hong Wu et al.
Ischemic stroke is a common disease in the elderly population, which can cause long-term disability and even death. However, the time window for treatment of ischemic stroke in its acute stage is very short. To fast localize and quantitively evaluate the acute ischemic stroke (AIS) lesions, many deep-learning-based lesion segmentation methods have been proposed in the literature, where a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained on hundreds of fully labeled subjects with accurate annotations of AIS lesions. Despite that high segmentation accuracy can be achieved, the accurate labels should be annotated by experienced clinicians, and it is therefore very time-consuming to obtain a large number of fully labeled subjects. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised method to automatically segment AIS lesions in diffusion weighted images and apparent diffusion coefficient maps. By using a large number of weakly labeled subjects and a small number of fully labeled subjects, our proposed method is able to accurately detect and segment the AIS lesions. In particular, our proposed method consists of three parts: 1) a double-path classification net (DPC-Net) trained in a weakly-supervised way is used to detect the suspicious regions of AIS lesions; 2) a pixel-level K-Means clustering algorithm is used to identify the hyperintensive regions on the DWIs; and 3) a region-growing algorithm combines the outputs of the DPC-Net and the K-Means to obtain the final precise lesion segmentation. In our experiment, we use 460 weakly labeled subjects and 15 fully labeled subjects to train and fine-tune the proposed method. By evaluating on a clinical dataset with 150 fully labeled subjects, our proposed method achieves a mean dice coefficient of 0.642, and a lesion-wise F1 score of 0.822.

Towards Clinical Diagnosis: Automated Stroke Lesion Segmentation on Multimodal MR Image Using Convolutional Neural NetworkZhiyang Liu, Chen Cao, Shuxue Ding et al.
The patient with ischemic stroke can benefit most from the earliest possible definitive diagnosis. While the high quality medical resources are quite scarce across the globe, an automated diagnostic tool is expected in analyzing the magnetic resonance (MR) images to provide reference in clinical diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a deep learning method to automatically segment ischemic stroke lesions from multi-modal MR images. By using atrous convolution and global convolution network, our proposed residual-structured fully convolutional network (Res-FCN) is able to capture features from large receptive fields. The network architecture is validated on a large dataset of 212 clinically acquired multi-modal MR images, which is shown to achieve a mean dice coefficient of 0.645 with a mean number of false negative lesions of 1.515. The false negatives can reach a value that close to a common medical image doctor, making it exceptive for a real clinical application.

Auto-encoders are often used as building blocks of deep network classifier to learn feature extractors, but task-irrelevant information in the input data may lead to bad extractors and result in poor generalization performance of the network. In this paper,via dropping the task-irrelevant input variables the performance of auto-encoders can be obviously improved .Specifically, an importance-based variable selection method is proposed to aim at finding the task-irrelevant input variables and dropping them.It firstly estimates importance of each variable,and then drops the variables with importance value lower than a threshold. In order to obtain better performance, the method can be employed for each layer of stacked auto-encoders. Experimental results show that when combined with our method the stacked denoising auto-encoders achieves significantly improved performance on three challenging datasets.
