Feature-Based Generalized Gaussian Distribution Method for NLoS Detection in Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Indoor Positioning SystemFuhu Che, Qasim Zeeshan Ahmed, Jaron Fontaine et al.
Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) propagation condition is a crucial factor affecting the precision of the localization in the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Indoor Positioning System (IPS). Numerous supervised Machine Learning (ML) approaches have been applied for NLoS identification to improve the accuracy of the IPS. However, it is difficult for existing ML approaches to maintain a high classification accuracy when the database contains a small number of NLoS signals and a large number of Line-of-Sight (LoS) signals. The inaccurate localization of the target node caused by this small number of NLoS signals can still be problematic. To solve this issue, we propose feature-based Gaussian Distribution (GD) and Generalized Gaussian Distribution (GGD) NLoS detection algorithms. By employing our detection algorithm for the imbalanced dataset, a classification accuracy of $96.7\%$ and $98.0\%$ can be achieved. We also compared the proposed algorithm with the existing cutting-edge such as Support-Vector-Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), Naive Bayes (NB), and Neural Network (NN), which can achieve an accuracy of $92.6\%$, $92.8\%$, $93.2\%$, and $95.5\%$, respectively. The results demonstrate that the GGD algorithm can achieve high classification accuracy with the imbalanced dataset. Finally, the proposed algorithm can also achieve a higher classification accuracy for different ratios of LoS and NLoS signals which proves the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed method.

SLA-Aware Traffic Steering in Hybrid TN-NTN 5G Backhaul: A Potential Game ApproachHojjat Navidan, Delia Rico, Mohammad Cheraghinia et al.
The integration of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) with Terrestrial Networks (TN) is a key enabler for resilient 5G-Advanced and future 6G backhaul infrastructures. However, managing traffic across these highly asymmetric links remains a significant routing challenge, as systems must support heterogeneous network slices with conflicting service-level agreements (SLAs) while selectively utilizing costly NTN resources. This paper presents a computationally lightweight SLA-aware traffic-steering framework for a hybrid TN-NTN backhaul that models the load-balancing problem as an exact potential game. This mathematical foundation inherently enables decentralized coordination between uplink and downlink load-balancing agents without control-message overhead. By formulating traffic steering as a coupled optimization problem, per-slice (or per-user group) traffic fractions are dynamically distributed across terrestrial and satellite paths based on utility functions that capture throughput, latency, packet loss, and SLA penalties. The resulting game admits a pure Nash equilibrium, ensuring stable and predictable traffic adaptation under non-stationary load conditions. The framework is evaluated on a geographically distributed 5G testbed, using bidirectional traffic generated for five representative slices. Experimental results show that the proposed controller significantly outperforms heuristic and conventional baselines, reducing SLA violations to 1.7% for V2X and 0.7% for the emergency slice while completely eliminating them for video, IoT, and best-effort traffic.

Deep reinforcement learning for automatic run-time adaptation of UWB PHY radio settingsDieter Coppens, Adnan Shahid, Eli De Poorter
Ultra-wideband technology has become increasingly popular for indoor localization and location-based services. This has led recent advances to be focused on reducing the ranging errors, whilst research focusing on enabling more reliable and energy efficient communication has been largely unexplored. The IEEE 802.15.4 UWB physical layer allows for several settings to be selected that influence the energy consumption, range, and reliability. Combined with the available link state diagnostics reported by UWB devices, there is an opportunity to dynamically select PHY settings based on the environment. To address this, we propose a deep Q-learning approach for enabling reliable UWB communication, maximizing packet reception rate (PRR) and minimizing energy consumption. Deep Q-learning is a good fit for this problem, as it is an inherently adaptive algorithm that responds to the environment. Validation in a realistic office environment showed that the algorithm outperforms traditional Q-learning, linear search and using a fixed PHY layer. We found that deep Q-learning achieves a higher average PRR and reduces the ranging error while using only 14% of the energy compared to a fixed PHY setting in a dynamic office environment.

Multiconnectivity for SAGIN: Current Trends, Challenges, AI-driven Solutions, and OpportunitiesAbd Ullah Khan, Adnan Shahid, Haejoon Jung et al.
Space-air-ground-integrated network (SAGIN)-enabled multiconnectivity (MC) is emerging as a key enabler for next-generation networks, enabling users to simultaneously utilize multiple links across multi-layer non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and multi-radio access technology (multi-RAT) terrestrial networks (TN). However, the heterogeneity of TN and NTN introduces complex architectural challenges that complicate MC implementation. Specifically, the diversity of link types, spanning air-to-air, air-to-space, space-to-space, space-to-ground, and ground-to-ground communications, renders optimal resource allocation highly complex. Recent advancements in reinforcement learning (RL) and agentic artificial intelligence (AI) have shown remarkable effectiveness in optimal decision-making in complex and dynamic environments. In this paper, we review the current developments in SAGIN-enabled MC and outline the key challenges associated with its implementation. We further highlight the transformative potential of AI-driven approaches for resource optimization in a heterogeneous SAGIN environment. To this end, we present a case study on resource allocation optimization enabled by agentic RL for SAGIN-enabled MC involving diverse radio access technologies (RATs). Results show that learning-based methods can effectively handle complex scenarios and substantially enhance network performance in terms of latency and capacity while incurring a moderate increase in power consumption as an acceptable tradeoff. Finally, open research problems and future directions are presented to realize efficient SAGIN-enabled MC.

Toward Autonomous O-RAN: A Multi-Scale Agentic AI Framework for Real-Time Network Control and ManagementHojjat Navidan, Mohammad Cheraghinia, Jaron Fontaine et al.
Open Radio Access Networks (O-RAN) promise flexible 6G network access through disaggregated, software-driven components and open interfaces, but this programmability also increases operational complexity. Multiple control loops coexist across the service management layer and RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC), while independently developed control applications can interact in unintended ways. In parallel, recent advances in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) are enabling a shift from isolated AI models toward agentic AI systems that can interpret goals, coordinate multiple models and control functions, and adapt their behavior over time. This article proposes a multi-scale agentic AI framework for O-RAN that organizes RAN intelligence as a coordinated hierarchy across the Non-Real-Time (Non-RT), Near-Real-Time (Near-RT), and Real-Time (RT) control loops: (i) A Large Language Model (LLM) agent in the Non-RT RIC translates operator intent into policies and governs model lifecycles. (ii) Small Language Model (SLM) agents in the Near-RT RIC execute low-latency optimization and can activate, tune, or disable existing control applications; and (iii) Wireless Physical-layer Foundation Model (WPFM) agents near the distributed unit provide fast inference close to the air interface. We describe how these agents cooperate through standardized O-RAN interfaces and telemetry. Using a proof-of-concept implementation built on open-source models, software, and datasets, we demonstrate the proposed agentic approach in two representative scenarios: robust operation under non-stationary conditions and intent-driven slice resource control.

Low-cost Embedded Breathing Rate Determination Using 802.15.4z IR-UWB Hardware for Remote HealthcareAnton Lambrecht, Stijn Luchie, Jaron Fontaine et al.
Respiratory diseases account for a significant portion of global mortality. Affordable and early detection is an effective way of addressing these ailments. To this end, a low-cost commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), IEEE 802.15.4z standard compliant impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar system is used to estimate human respiration rates. We propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) specifically adapted to predict breathing rates from ultra-wideband (UWB) channel impulse response (CIR) data, and compare its performance with both other rule-based algorithms and model-based solutions. The study uses a diverse dataset, incorporating various real-life environments to evaluate system robustness. To facilitate future research, this dataset will be released as open source. Results show that the CNN achieves a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.73 breaths per minute (BPM) in unseen situations, significantly outperforming rule-based methods (3.40 BPM). By incorporating calibration data from other individuals in the unseen situations, the error is further reduced to 0.84 BPM. In addition, this work evaluates the feasibility of running the pipeline on a low-cost embedded device. Applying 8-bit quantization to both the weights and input/ouput tensors, reduces memory requirements by 67% and inference time by 64% with only a 3% increase in MAE. As a result, we show it is feasible to deploy the algorithm on an nRF52840 system-on-chip (SoC) requiring only 46 KB of memory and operating with an inference time of only 192 ms. Once deployed, an analytical energy model estimates that the system, while continuously monitoring the room, can operate for up to 268 days without recharging when powered by a 20 000 mAh battery pack. For breathing monitoring in bed, the sampling rate can be lowered, extending battery life to 313 days, making the solution highly efficient for real-world, low-cost deployments.

Deep Learning-Based Image Compression for Wireless Communications: Impacts on Reliability,Throughput, and LatencyMostafa Naseri, Pooya Ashtari, Mohamed Seif et al.
In wireless communications, efficient image transmission must balance reliability, throughput, and latency, especially under dynamic channel conditions. This paper presents an adaptive and progressive pipeline for learned image compression (LIC)-based architectures tailored to such environments. We investigate two state-of-the-art learning-based models: the hyperprior model and Vector Quantized Generative Adversarial Network (VQGAN). The hyperprior model achieves superior compression performance through lossless compression in the bottleneck but is susceptible to bit errors, necessitating the use of error correction or retransmission mechanisms. In contrast, the VQGAN decoder demonstrates robust image reconstruction capabilities even in the absence of channel coding, enhancing reliability in challenging transmission scenarios. We propose progressive versions of both models, enabling partial image transmission and decoding under imperfect channel conditions. This progressive approach not only maintains image integrity under poor channel conditions but also significantly reduces latency by allowing immediate partial image availability. We evaluate our pipeline using the Kodak high-resolution image dataset under a Rayleigh fading wireless channel model simulating dynamic conditions. The results indicate that the progressive transmission framework enhances reliability and latency while maintaining or improving throughput compared to non-progressive counterparts across various Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) levels. Specifically, the progressive-hyperprior model consistently outperforms others in latency metrics, particularly in the 99.9th percentile waiting time-a measure indicating the maximum waiting time experienced by 99.9% of transmission instances-across all SNRs, and achieves higher throughput in low SNR scenarios. where Adaptive WebP fails.

Error Mitigation for TDoA UWB Indoor Localization using Unsupervised Machine LearningPhuong Bich Duong, Ben Van Herbruggen, Arne Broering et al.
Indoor positioning systems based on Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology are gaining recognition for their ability to provide cm-level localization accuracy. However, these systems often encounter challenges caused by dense multi-path fading, leading to positioning errors. To address this issue, in this letter, we propose a novel methodology for unsupervised anchor node selection using deep embedded clustering (DEC). Our approach uses an Auto Encoder (AE) before clustering, thereby better separating UWB features into separable clusters of UWB input signals. We furthermore investigate how to rank these clusters based on their cluster quality, allowing us to remove untrustworthy signals. Experimental results show the efficiency of our proposed method, demonstrating a significant 23.1% reduction in mean absolute error (MAE) compared to without anchor exclusion. Especially in the dense multi-path area, our algorithm achieves even more significant enhancements, reducing the MAE by 26.6% and the 95th percentile error by 49.3% compared to without anchor exclusion.

UWB TDoA Error Correction using Transformers: Patching and Positional Encoding StrategiesDieter Coppens, Adnan Shahid, Eli De Poorter
Despite their high accuracy, UWB-based localization systems suffer inaccuracies when deployed in industrial locations with many obstacles due to multipath effects and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions. In such environments, current error mitigation approaches for time difference of arrival (TDoA) localization typically exclude NLOS links. However, this exclusion approach leads to geometric dilution of precision problems and this approach is infeasible when the majority of links are NLOS. To address these limitations, we propose a transformer-based TDoA position correction method that uses raw channel impulse responses (CIRs) from all available anchor nodes to compute position corrections. We introduce different CIR ordering, patching and positional encoding strategies for the transformer, and analyze each proposed technique's scalability and performance gains. Based on experiments on real-world UWB measurements, our approach can provide accuracies of up to 0.39 m in a complex environment consisting of (almost) only NLOS signals, which is an improvement of 73.6 % compared to the TDoA baseline.

One significant challenge in research is to collect a large amount of data and learn the underlying relationship between the input and the output variables. This paper outlines the process of collecting and validating a dataset designed to determine the angle of arrival (AoA) using Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technology. The data, collected in a laboratory setting, is intended to approximate real-world industrial scenarios. This paper discusses the data collection process, the structure of the dataset, and the methodology adopted for automating sample labeling for supervised learning. The collected samples and the process of generating ground truth (GT) labels were validated using the Texas Instruments (TI) phase difference of arrival (PDoA) implementation on the data, yielding a mean absolute error (MAE) at one of the heights without obstacles of $25.71^\circ$. The distance estimation on BLE was implemented using a Gaussian Process Regression algorithm, yielding an MAE of $0.174$m.

Removing the need for ground truth UWB data collection: self-supervised ranging error correction using deep reinforcement learningDieter Coppens, Ben Van Herbruggen, Adnan Shahid et al.
Indoor positioning using UWB technology has gained interest due to its centimeter-level accuracy potential. However, multipath effects and non-line-of-sight conditions cause ranging errors between anchors and tags. Existing approaches for mitigating these ranging errors rely on collecting large labeled datasets, making them impractical for real-world deployments. This paper proposes a novel self-supervised deep reinforcement learning approach that does not require labeled ground truth data. A reinforcement learning agent uses the channel impulse response as a state and predicts corrections to minimize the error between corrected and estimated ranges. The agent learns, self-supervised, by iteratively improving corrections that are generated by combining the predictability of trajectories with filtering and smoothening. Experiments on real-world UWB measurements demonstrate comparable performance to state-of-the-art supervised methods, overcoming data dependency and lack of generalizability limitations. This makes self-supervised deep reinforcement learning a promising solution for practical and scalable UWB-ranging error correction.
