Indian Sign Language Recognition Using Mediapipe Holistic

Velmathi G, Kaushal Goyal

Deaf individuals confront significant communication obstacles on a daily basis. Their inability to hear makes it difficult for them to communicate with those who do not understand sign language. Moreover, it presents difficulties in educational, occupational, and social contexts. By providing alternative communication channels, technology can play a crucial role in overcoming these obstacles. One such technology that can facilitate communication between deaf and hearing individuals is sign language recognition. We will create a robust system for sign language recognition in order to convert Indian Sign Language to text or speech. We will evaluate the proposed system and compare CNN and LSTM models. Since there are both static and gesture sign languages, a robust model is required to distinguish between them. In this study, we discovered that a CNN model captures letters and characters for recognition of static sign language better than an LSTM model, but it outperforms CNN by monitoring hands, faces, and pose in gesture sign language phrases and sentences. The creation of a text-to-sign language paradigm is essential since it will enhance the sign language-dependent deaf and hard-of-hearing population's communication skills. Even though the sign-to-text translation is just one side of communication, not all deaf or hard-of-hearing people are proficient in reading or writing text. Some may have difficulty comprehending written language due to educational or literacy issues. Therefore, a text-to-sign language paradigm would allow them to comprehend text-based information and participate in a variety of social, educational, and professional settings. Keywords: deaf and hard-of-hearing, DHH, Indian sign language, CNN, LSTM, static and gesture sign languages, text-to-sign language model, MediaPipe Holistic, sign language recognition, SLR, SLT

Image Based Character Recognition, Documentation System To Decode Inscription From Temple

Velmathi G, Shangavelan M, Harish D et al.

This project undertakes the training and analysis of optical character recognition OCR methods applied to 10th century ancient Tamil inscriptions discovered on the walls of the Brihadeeswarar Temple. The chosen OCR methods include Tesseract,a widely used OCR engine, using modern ICR techniques to pre process the raw data and a box editing software to finetune our model. The analysis with Tesseract aims to evaluate their effectiveness in accurately deciphering the nuances of the ancient Tamil characters. The performance of our model for the dataset are determined by their accuracy rate where the evaluated dataset divided into training set and testing set.By addressing the unique challenges posed by the script's historical context, this study seeks to contribute valuable insights to the broader field of OCR,facilitating improved preservation and interpretation of ancient inscriptions

Water Care: Water Surface Cleaning Bot and Water Body Surveillance System

Harsh Sankar Naicker, Yash Srivastava, Akshara Pramod et al.

Whenever a person hears about pollution, more often than not, the first thought that comes to their mind is air pollution. One of the most under-mentioned and under-discussed pollution globally is that caused by the non-biodegradable waste in our water bodies. In the case of India, there is a lot of plastic waste on the surface of rivers and lakes. The Ganga river is one of the 10 rivers which account for 90 percent of the plastic that ends up in the sea and there are major cases of local nalaas and lakes being contaminated due to this waste. This limits the source of clean water which leads to major depletion in water sources. From 2001 to 2012, in the city of Hyderabad, 3245 hectares of lakes dissipated. The water recedes by nine feet a year on average in southern New Delhi. Thus, cleaning of these local water bodies and rivers is of utmost importance. Our aim is to develop a water surface cleaning bot that is deployed across the shore. The bot will detect garbage patches on its way and collect the garbage thus making the water bodies clean. This solution employs a surveillance mechanism in order to alert the authorities in case anyone is found polluting the water bodies. A more sustainable system by using solar energy to power the system has been developed. Computer vision algorithms are used for detecting trash on the surface of the water. This trash is collected by the bot and is disposed of at a designated location. In addition to cleaning the water bodies, preventive measures have been also implemented with the help of a virtual fencing algorithm that alerts the authorities if anyone tries to pollute the water premises. A web application and a mobile app is deployed to keep a check on the movement of the bot and shore surveillance respectively. This complete solution involves both preventive and curative measures that are required for water care.

A Novel Approach to OCR using Image Recognition based Classification for Ancient Tamil Inscriptions in Temples

Lalitha Giridhar, Aishwarya Dharani and, Velmathi Guruviah

Recognition of ancient Tamil characters has always been a challenge for epigraphers. This is primarily because the language has evolved over the several centuries and the character set over this time has both expanded and diversified. This proposed work focuses on improving optical character recognition techniques for ancient Tamil script which was in use between the 7th and 12th centuries. While comprehensively curating a functional data set for ancient Tamil characters is an arduous task, in this work, a data set has been curated using cropped images of characters found on certain temple inscriptions, specific to this time as a case study. After using Otsu thresholding method for binarization of the image a two dimensional convolution neural network is defined and used to train, classify and, recognize the ancient Tamil characters. To implement the optical character recognition techniques, the neural network is linked to the Tesseract using the pytesseract library of Python. As an added feature, the work also incorporates Google's text to speech voice engine to produce an audio output of the digitized text. Various samples for both modern and ancient Tamil were collected and passed through the system. It is found that for Tamil inscriptions studied over the considered time period, a combined efficiency of 77.7 percent can be achieved.
