Fengshenbang 1.0: Being the Foundation of Chinese Cognitive IntelligenceJiaxing Zhang, Ruyi Gan, Junjie Wang et al.
Nowadays, foundation models become one of fundamental infrastructures in artificial intelligence, paving ways to the general intelligence. However, the reality presents two urgent challenges: existing foundation models are dominated by the English-language community; users are often given limited resources and thus cannot always use foundation models. To support the development of the Chinese-language community, we introduce an open-source project, called Fengshenbang, which leads by the research center for Cognitive Computing and Natural Language (CCNL). Our project has comprehensive capabilities, including large pre-trained models, user-friendly APIs, benchmarks, datasets, and others. We wrap all these in three sub-projects: the Fengshenbang Model, the Fengshen Framework, and the Fengshen Benchmark. An open-source roadmap, Fengshenbang, aims to re-evaluate the open-source community of Chinese pre-trained large-scale models, prompting the development of the entire Chinese large-scale model community. We also want to build a user-centered open-source ecosystem to allow individuals to access the desired models to match their computing resources. Furthermore, we invite companies, colleges, and research institutions to collaborate with us to build the large-scale open-source model-based ecosystem. We hope that this project will be the foundation of Chinese cognitive intelligence.

TCBERT: A Technical Report for Chinese Topic Classification BERTTing Han, Kunhao Pan, Xinyu Chen et al.
Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers or BERT~\cite{devlin-etal-2019-bert} has been one of the base models for various NLP tasks due to its remarkable performance. Variants customized for different languages and tasks are proposed to further improve the performance. In this work, we investigate supervised continued pre-training~\cite{gururangan-etal-2020-dont} on BERT for Chinese topic classification task. Specifically, we incorporate prompt-based learning and contrastive learning into the pre-training. To adapt to the task of Chinese topic classification, we collect around 2.1M Chinese data spanning various topics. The pre-trained Chinese Topic Classification BERTs (TCBERTs) with different parameter sizes are open-sourced at \url{https://huggingface.co/IDEA-CCNL}.

Depth Matters: Exploring Deep Interactions of RGB-D for Semantic Segmentation in Traffic ScenesSiyu Chen, Ting Han, Changshe Zhang et al.
RGB-D has gradually become a crucial data source for understanding complex scenes in assisted driving. However, existing studies have paid insufficient attention to the intrinsic spatial properties of depth maps. This oversight significantly impacts the attention representation, leading to prediction errors caused by attention shift issues. To this end, we propose a novel learnable Depth interaction Pyramid Transformer (DiPFormer) to explore the effectiveness of depth. Firstly, we introduce Depth Spatial-Aware Optimization (Depth SAO) as offset to represent real-world spatial relationships. Secondly, the similarity in the feature space of RGB-D is learned by Depth Linear Cross-Attention (Depth LCA) to clarify spatial differences at the pixel level. Finally, an MLP Decoder is utilized to effectively fuse multi-scale features for meeting real-time requirements. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed DiPFormer significantly addresses the issue of attention misalignment in both road detection (+7.5%) and semantic segmentation (+4.9% / +1.5%) tasks. DiPFormer achieves state-of-the-art performance on the KITTI (97.57% F-score on KITTI road and 68.74% mIoU on KITTI-360) and Cityscapes (83.4% mIoU) datasets.

Time2General: Learning Spatiotemporal Invariant Representations for Domain-Generalization Video Semantic SegmentationSiyu Chen, Ting Han, Haoling Huang et al.
Domain Generalized Video Semantic Segmentation (DGVSS) is trained on a single labeled driving domain and is directly deployed on unseen domains without target labels and test-time adaptation while maintaining temporally consistent predictions over video streams. In practice, both domain shift and temporal-sampling shift break correspondence-based propagation and fixed-stride temporal aggregation, causing severe frame-to-frame flicker even in label-stable regions. We propose Time2General, a DGVSS framework built on Stability Queries. Time2General introduces a Spatio-Temporal Memory Decoder that aggregates multi-frame context into a clip-level spatio-temporal memory and decodes temporally consistent per-frame masks without explicit correspondence propagation. To further suppress flicker and improve robustness to varying sampling rates, the Masked Temporal Consistency Loss is proposed to regularize temporal prediction discrepancies across different strides, and randomize training strides to expose the model to diverse temporal gaps. Extensive experiments on multiple driving benchmarks show that Time2General achieves a substantial improvement in cross-domain accuracy and temporal stability over prior DGSS and VSS baselines while running at up to 18 FPS. Scene4U: Hierarchical Layered 3D Scene Reconstruction from Single Panoramic Image for Your Immerse ExplorationZilong Huang, Jun He, Junyan Ye et al.
The reconstruction of immersive and realistic 3D scenes holds significant practical importance in various fields of computer vision and computer graphics. Typically, immersive and realistic scenes should be free from obstructions by dynamic objects, maintain global texture consistency, and allow for unrestricted exploration. The current mainstream methods for image-driven scene construction involves iteratively refining the initial image using a moving virtual camera to generate the scene. However, previous methods struggle with visual discontinuities due to global texture inconsistencies under varying camera poses, and they frequently exhibit scene voids caused by foreground-background occlusions. To this end, we propose a novel layered 3D scene reconstruction framework from panoramic image, named Scene4U. Specifically, Scene4U integrates an open-vocabulary segmentation model with a large language model to decompose a real panorama into multiple layers. Then, we employs a layered repair module based on diffusion model to restore occluded regions using visual cues and depth information, generating a hierarchical representation of the scene. The multi-layer panorama is then initialized as a 3D Gaussian Splatting representation, followed by layered optimization, which ultimately produces an immersive 3D scene with semantic and structural consistency that supports free exploration. Scene4U outperforms state-of-the-art method, improving by 24.24% in LPIPS and 24.40% in BRISQUE, while also achieving the fastest training speed. Additionally, to demonstrate the robustness of Scene4U and allow users to experience immersive scenes from various landmarks, we build WorldVista3D dataset for 3D scene reconstruction, which contains panoramic images of globally renowned sites. Leveraging Depth and Language for Open-Vocabulary Domain-Generalized Semantic SegmentationSiyu Chen, Ting Han, Chengzheng Fu et al.
Open-Vocabulary semantic segmentation (OVSS) and domain generalization in semantic segmentation (DGSS) highlight a subtle complementarity that motivates Open-Vocabulary Domain-Generalized Semantic Segmentation (OV-DGSS). OV-DGSS aims to generate pixel-level masks for unseen categories while maintaining robustness across unseen domains, a critical capability for real-world scenarios such as autonomous driving in adverse conditions. We introduce Vireo, a novel single-stage framework for OV-DGSS that unifies the strengths of OVSS and DGSS for the first time. Vireo builds upon the frozen Visual Foundation Models (VFMs) and incorporates scene geometry via Depth VFMs to extract domain-invariant structural features. To bridge the gap between visual and textual modalities under domain shift, we propose three key components: (1) GeoText Prompts, which align geometric features with language cues and progressively refine VFM encoder representations; (2) Coarse Mask Prior Embedding (CMPE) for enhancing gradient flow for faster convergence and stronger textual influence; and (3) the Domain-Open-Vocabulary Vector Embedding Head (DOV-VEH), which fuses refined structural and semantic features for robust prediction. Comprehensive evaluation on these components demonstrates the effectiveness of our designs. Our proposed Vireo achieves the state-of-the-art performance and surpasses existing methods by a large margin in both domain generalization and open-vocabulary recognition, offering a unified and scalable solution for robust visual understanding in diverse and dynamic environments. Stronger, Steadier & Superior: Geometric Consistency in Depth VFM Forges Domain Generalized Semantic SegmentationSiyu Chen, Ting Han, Changshe Zhang et al.
Vision Foundation Models (VFMs) have delivered remarkable performance in Domain Generalized Semantic Segmentation (DGSS). However, recent methods often overlook the fact that visual cues are susceptible, whereas the underlying geometry remains stable, rendering depth information more robust. In this paper, we investigate the potential of integrating depth information with features from VFMs, to improve the geometric consistency within an image and boost the generalization performance of VFMs. We propose a novel fine-tuning DGSS framework, named DepthForge, which integrates the visual cues from frozen DINOv2 or EVA02 and depth cues from frozen Depth Anything V2. In each layer of the VFMs, we incorporate depth-aware learnable tokens to continuously decouple domain-invariant visual and spatial information, thereby enhancing depth awareness and attention of the VFMs. Finally, we develop a depth refinement decoder and integrate it into the model architecture to adaptively refine multi-layer VFM features and depth-aware learnable tokens. Extensive experiments are conducted based on various DGSS settings and five different datsets as unseen target domains. The qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms alternative approaches with stronger performance, steadier visual-spatial attention, and superior generalization ability. SGS-3D: High-Fidelity 3D Instance Segmentation via Reliable Semantic Mask Splitting and GrowingChaolei Wang, Yang Luo, Jing Du et al.
Accurate 3D instance segmentation is crucial for high-quality scene understanding in the 3D vision domain. However, 3D instance segmentation based on 2D-to-3D lifting approaches struggle to produce precise instance-level segmentation, due to accumulated errors introduced during the lifting process from ambiguous semantic guidance and insufficient depth constraints. To tackle these challenges, we propose splitting and growing reliable semantic mask for high-fidelity 3D instance segmentation (SGS-3D), a novel "split-then-grow" framework that first purifies and splits ambiguous lifted masks using geometric primitives, and then grows them into complete instances within the scene. Unlike existing approaches that directly rely on raw lifted masks and sacrifice segmentation accuracy, SGS-3D serves as a training-free refinement method that jointly fuses semantic and geometric information, enabling effective cooperation between the two levels of representation. Specifically, for semantic guidance, we introduce a mask filtering strategy that leverages the co-occurrence of 3D geometry primitives to identify and remove ambiguous masks, thereby ensuring more reliable semantic consistency with the 3D object instances. For the geometric refinement, we construct fine-grained object instances by exploiting both spatial continuity and high-level features, particularly in the case of semantic ambiguity between distinct objects. Experimental results on ScanNet200, ScanNet++, and KITTI-360 demonstrate that SGS-3D substantially improves segmentation accuracy and robustness against inaccurate masks from pre-trained models, yielding high-fidelity object instances while maintaining strong generalization across diverse indoor and outdoor environments. Adaptive loose optimization for robust question answeringJie Ma, Pinghui Wang, Zewei Wang et al.
Question answering methods are well-known for leveraging data bias, such as the language prior in visual question answering and the position bias in machine reading comprehension (extractive question answering). Current debiasing methods often come at the cost of significant in-distribution performance to achieve favorable out-of-distribution generalizability, while non-debiasing methods sacrifice a considerable amount of out-of-distribution performance in order to obtain high in-distribution performance. Therefore, it is challenging for them to deal with the complicated changing real-world situations. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective novel loss function with adaptive loose optimization, which seeks to make the best of both worlds for question answering. Our main technical contribution is to reduce the loss adaptively according to the ratio between the previous and current optimization state on mini-batch training data. This loose optimization can be used to prevent non-debiasing methods from overlearning data bias while enabling debiasing methods to maintain slight bias learning. Experiments on the visual question answering datasets, including VQA v2, VQA-CP v1, VQA-CP v2, GQA-OOD, and the extractive question answering dataset SQuAD demonstrate that our approach enables QA methods to obtain state-of-the-art in- and out-of-distribution performance in most cases. A Large-Scale Remote Sensing Dataset and VLM-based Algorithm for Fine-Grained Road Hierarchy ClassificationTing Han, Xiangyi Xie, Yiping Chen et al.
In this work, we present SYSU-HiRoads, a large-scale hierarchical road dataset, and RoadReasoner, a vision-language-geometry framework for automatic multi-grade road mapping from remote sensing imagery. SYSU-HiRoads is built from GF-2 imagery covering 3631 km2 in Henan Province, China, and contains 1079 image tiles at 0.8 m spatial resolution. Each tile is annotated with dense road masks, vectorized centerlines, and three-level hierarchy labels, enabling the joint training and evaluation of segmentation, topology reconstruction, and hierarchy classification. Building on this dataset, RoadReasoner is designed to generate robust road surface masks, topology-preserving road networks, and semantically coherent hierarchy assignments. We strengthen road feature representation and network connectivity by explicitly enhancing frequency-sensitive cues and multi-scale context. Moreover, we perform hierarchy inference at the skeleton-segment level with geometric descriptors and geometry-aware textual prompts, queried by vision-language models to obtain linguistically interpretable grade decisions. Experiments on SYSU-HiRoads and the CHN6-CUG dataset show that RoadReasoner surpasses state-of-the-art road extraction baselines and produces accurate and semantically consistent road hierarchy maps with 72.6% OA, 64.2% F1 score, and 60.6% SegAcc. The dataset and code will be publicly released to support automated transport infrastructure mapping, road inventory updating, and broader infrastructure management applications.

PreResQ-R1: Towards Fine-Grained Rank-and-Score Reinforcement Learning for Visual Quality Assessment via Preference-Response Disentangled Policy OptimizationZehui Feng, Tian Qiu, Tong Wu et al.
Visual Quality Assessment (QA) seeks to predict human perceptual judgments of visual fidelity. While recent multimodal large language models (MLLMs) show promise in reasoning about image and video quality, existing approaches mainly rely on supervised fine-tuning or rank-only objectives, resulting in shallow reasoning, poor score calibration, and limited cross-domain generalization. We propose PreResQ-R1, a Preference-Response Disentangled Reinforcement Learning framework that unifies absolute score regression and relative ranking consistency within a single reasoning-driven optimization scheme. Unlike prior QA methods, PreResQ-R1 introduces a dual-branch reward formulation that separately models intra-sample response coherence and inter-sample preference alignment, optimized via Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO). This design encourages fine-grained, stable, and interpretable chain-of-thought reasoning about perceptual quality. To extend beyond static imagery, we further design a global-temporal and local-spatial data flow strategy for Video Quality Assessment. Remarkably, with reinforcement fine-tuning on only 6K images and 28K videos, PreResQ-R1 achieves state-of-the-art results across 10 IQA and 5 VQA benchmarks under both SRCC and PLCC metrics, surpassing by margins of 5.30% and textbf2.15% in IQA task, respectively. Beyond quantitative gains, it produces human-aligned reasoning traces that reveal the perceptual cues underlying quality judgments. Code and model are available.

Unveiling Deep Semantic Uncertainty Perception for Language-Anchored Multi-modal Vision-Brain AlignmentZehui Feng, Chenqi Zhang, Mingru Wang et al.
Unveiling visual semantics from neural signals such as EEG, MEG, and fMRI remains a fundamental challenge due to subject variability and the entangled nature of visual features. Existing approaches primarily align neural activity directly with visual embeddings, but visual-only representations often fail to capture latent semantic dimensions, limiting interpretability and deep robustness. To address these limitations, we propose Bratrix, the first end-to-end framework to achieve multimodal Language-Anchored Vision-Brain alignment. Bratrix decouples visual stimuli into hierarchical visual and linguistic semantic components, and projects both visual and brain representations into a shared latent space, enabling the formation of aligned visual-language and brain-language embeddings. To emulate human-like perceptual reliability and handle noisy neural signals, Bratrix incorporates a novel uncertainty perception module that applies uncertainty-aware weighting during alignment. By leveraging learnable language-anchored semantic matrices to enhance cross-modal correlations and employing a two-stage training strategy of single-modality pretraining followed by multimodal fine-tuning, Bratrix-M improves alignment precision. Extensive experiments on EEG, MEG, and fMRI benchmarks demonstrate that Bratrix improves retrieval, reconstruction, and captioning performance compared to state-of-the-art methods, specifically surpassing 14.3% in 200-way EEG retrieval task. Comparative Analysis of Advanced Feature Matching Algorithms in Challenging High Spatial Resolution Optical Satellite Stereo ScenariosQiyan Luo, Jidan Zhang, Yuzhen Xie et al.
Feature matching determines the orientation accuracy for the High Spatial Resolution (HSR) optical satellite stereos, subsequently impacting several significant applications such as 3D reconstruction and change detection. However, the matching of off-track HSR optical satellite stereos often encounters challenging conditions including wide-baseline observation, significant radiometric differences, multi-temporal changes, varying spatial resolutions, inconsistent spectral resolution, and diverse sensors. In this study, we evaluate various advanced feature matching algorithms for HSR optical satellite stereos. Utilizing a specially constructed dataset from five satellites across six challenging scenarios, HSROSS Dataset, we conduct a comparative analysis of four algorithms: the traditional SIFT, and deep-learning based methods including SuperPoint + SuperGlue, SuperPoint + LightGlue, and LoFTR. Our findings highlight overall superior performance of SuperPoint + LightGlue in balancing robustness, accuracy, distribution, and efficiency, showcasing its potential in complex HSR optical satellite scenarios.

Spatially-Weighted CLIP for Street-View Geo-localizationTing Han, Fengjiao Li, Chunsong Chen et al.
This paper proposes Spatially-Weighted CLIP (SW-CLIP), a novel framework for street-view geo-localization that explicitly incorporates spatial autocorrelation into vision-language contrastive learning. Unlike conventional CLIP-based methods that treat all non-matching samples as equally negative, SW-CLIP leverages Tobler's First Law of Geography to model geographic relationships through distance-aware soft supervision. Specifically, we introduce a location-as-text representation to encode geographic positions and replace one-hot InfoNCE targets with spatially weighted soft labels derived from geodesic distance. Additionally, a neighborhood-consistency regularization is employed to preserve local spatial structure in the embedding space. Experiments on a multi-city dataset demonstrate that SW-CLIP significantly improves geo-localization accuracy, reduces long-tail errors, and enhances spatial coherence compared to standard CLIP. The results highlight the importance of shifting from semantic alignment to geographic alignment for robust geo-localization and provide a general paradigm for integrating spatial principles into multimodal representation learning.

Flatness is Necessary, Neural Collapse is Not: Rethinking Generalization via GrokkingTing Han, Linara Adilova, Henning Petzka et al.
Neural collapse, i.e., the emergence of highly symmetric, class-wise clustered representations, is frequently observed in deep networks and is often assumed to reflect or enable generalization. In parallel, flatness of the loss landscape has been theoretically and empirically linked to generalization. Yet, the causal role of either phenomenon remains unclear: Are they prerequisites for generalization, or merely by-products of training dynamics? We disentangle these questions using grokking, a training regime in which memorization precedes generalization, allowing us to temporally separate generalization from training dynamics and we find that while both neural collapse and relative flatness emerge near the onset of generalization, only flatness consistently predicts it. Models encouraged to collapse or prevented from collapsing generalize equally well, whereas models regularized away from flat solutions exhibit delayed generalization, resembling grokking, even in architectures and datasets where it does not typically occur. Furthermore, we show theoretically that neural collapse leads to relative flatness under classical assumptions, explaining their empirical co-occurrence. Our results support the view that relative flatness is a potentially necessary and more fundamental property for generalization, and demonstrate how grokking can serve as a powerful probe for isolating its geometric underpinnings.

Seed LiveInterpret 2.0: End-to-end Simultaneous Speech-to-speech Translation with Your VoiceShanbo Cheng, Yu Bao, Zhichao Huang et al.
Simultaneous Interpretation (SI) represents one of the most daunting frontiers in the translation industry, with product-level automatic systems long plagued by intractable challenges: subpar transcription and translation quality, lack of real-time speech generation, multi-speaker confusion, and translated speech inflation, especially in long-form discourses. In this study, we introduce Seed-LiveInterpret 2.0, an end-to-end SI model that delivers high-fidelity, ultra-low-latency speech-to-speech generation with voice cloning capabilities. As a fully operational product-level solution, Seed-LiveInterpret 2.0 tackles these challenges head-on through our novel duplex speech-to-speech understanding-generating framework. Experimental results demonstrate that through large-scale pretraining and reinforcement learning, the model achieves a significantly better balance between translation accuracy and latency, validated by human interpreters to exceed 70% correctness in complex scenarios. Notably, Seed-LiveInterpret 2.0 outperforms commercial SI solutions by significant margins in translation quality, while slashing the average latency of cloned speech from nearly 10 seconds to a near-real-time 3 seconds, which is around a near 70% reduction that drastically enhances practical usability.

MajutsuCity: Language-driven Aesthetic-adaptive City Generation with Controllable 3D Assets and LayoutsZilong Huang, Jun He, Xiaobin Huang et al.
Generating realistic 3D cities is fundamental to world models, virtual reality, and game development, where an ideal urban scene must satisfy both stylistic diversity, fine-grained, and controllability. However, existing methods struggle to balance the creative flexibility offered by text-based generation with the object-level editability enabled by explicit structural representations. We introduce MajutsuCity, a natural language-driven and aesthetically adaptive framework for synthesizing structurally consistent and stylistically diverse 3D urban scenes. MajutsuCity represents a city as a composition of controllable layouts, assets, and materials, and operates through a four-stage pipeline. To extend controllability beyond initial generation, we further integrate MajutsuAgent, an interactive language-grounded editing agent} that supports five object-level operations. To support photorealistic and customizable scene synthesis, we also construct MajutsuDataset, a high-quality multimodal dataset} containing 2D semantic layouts and height maps, diverse 3D building assets, and curated PBR materials and skyboxes, each accompanied by detailed annotations. Meanwhile, we develop a practical set of evaluation metrics, covering key dimensions such as structural consistency, scene complexity, material fidelity, and lighting atmosphere. Extensive experiments demonstrate MajutsuCity reduces layout FID by 83.7% compared with CityDreamer and by 20.1% over CityCraft. Our method ranks first across all AQS and RDR scores, outperforming existing methods by a clear margin. These results confirm MajutsuCity as a new state-of-the-art in geometric fidelity, stylistic adaptability, and semantic controllability for 3D city generation. Semantic4Safety: Causal Insights from Zero-shot Street View Imagery Segmentation for Urban Road SafetyHuan Chen, Ting Han, Siyu Chen et al.
Street-view imagery (SVI) offers a fine-grained lens on traffic risk, yet two fundamental challenges persist: (1) how to construct street-level indicators that capture accident-related features, and (2) how to quantify their causal impacts across different accident types. To address these challenges, we propose Semantic4Safety, a framework that applies zero-shot semantic segmentation to SVIs to derive 11 interpretable streetscape indicators, and integrates road type as contextual information to analyze approximately 30,000 accident records in Austin. Specifically, we train an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) multi-class classifier and use Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) to interpret both global and local feature contributions, and then apply Generalized Propensity Score (GPS) weighting and Average Treatment Effect (ATE) estimation to control confounding and quantify causal effects. Results uncover heterogeneous, accident-type-specific causal patterns: features capturing scene complexity, exposure, and roadway geometry dominate predictive power; larger drivable area and emergency space reduce risk, whereas excessive visual openness can increase it. By bridging predictive modeling with causal inference, Semantic4Safety supports targeted interventions and high-risk corridor diagnosis, offering a scalable, data-informed tool for urban road safety planning.

Coreference Augmentation for Multi-Domain Task-Oriented Dialogue State TrackingTing Han, Chongxuan Huang, Wei Peng
Dialogue State Tracking (DST), which is the process of inferring user goals by estimating belief states given the dialogue history, plays a critical role in task-oriented dialogue systems. A coreference phenomenon observed in multi-turn conversations is not addressed by existing DST models, leading to sub-optimal performances. In this paper, we propose Coreference Dialogue State Tracker (CDST) that explicitly models the coreference feature. In particular, at each turn, the proposed model jointly predicts the coreferred domain-slot pair and extracts the coreference values from the dialogue context. Experimental results on MultiWOZ 2.1 dataset show that the proposed model achieves the state-of-the-art joint goal accuracy of 56.47%.

Enabling Robots to Draw and Tell: Towards Visually Grounded Multimodal Description GenerationTing Han, Sina Zarrieß
Socially competent robots should be equipped with the ability to perceive the world that surrounds them and communicate about it in a human-like manner. Representative skills that exhibit such ability include generating image descriptions and visually grounded referring expressions. In the NLG community, these generation tasks are largely investigated in non-interactive and language-only settings. However, in face-to-face interaction, humans often deploy multiple modalities to communicate, forming seamless integration of natural language, hand gestures and other modalities like sketches. To enable robots to describe what they perceive with speech and sketches/gestures, we propose to model the task of generating natural language together with free-hand sketches/hand gestures to describe visual scenes and real life objects, namely, visually-grounded multimodal description generation. In this paper, we discuss the challenges and evaluation metrics of the task, and how the task can benefit from progress recently made in the natural language processing and computer vision realms, where related topics such as visually grounded NLG, distributional semantics, and photo-based sketch generation have been extensively studied.

MultiWOZ 2.3: A multi-domain task-oriented dialogue dataset enhanced with annotation corrections and co-reference annotationTing Han, Ximing Liu, Ryuichi Takanobu et al.
Task-oriented dialogue systems have made unprecedented progress with multiple state-of-the-art (SOTA) models underpinned by a number of publicly available MultiWOZ datasets. Dialogue state annotations are error-prone, leading to sub-optimal performance. Various efforts have been put in rectifying the annotation errors presented in the original MultiWOZ dataset. In this paper, we introduce MultiWOZ 2.3, in which we differentiate incorrect annotations in dialogue acts from dialogue states, identifying a lack of co-reference when publishing the updated dataset. To ensure consistency between dialogue acts and dialogue states, we implement co-reference features and unify annotations of dialogue acts and dialogue states. We update the state of the art performance of natural language understanding and dialogue state tracking on MultiWOZ 2.3, where the results show significant improvements than on previous versions of MultiWOZ datasets (2.0-2.2).

Usability Investigation on the Localization of Text CAPTCHAs: Take Chinese Characters as a Case StudyJunnan Yu, Xuna Ma, Ting Han
Text CAPTCHA has been an effective means to protect online systems from spams and abuses caused by automatic scripts which pretend to be human beings. However, nearly all the Text CAPTCHA designs in nowadays are based on English characters, which may not be the most user-friendly option for non-English speakers. Therefore, under the background of globalization, there is an increasing interest in designing local-language CAPTCHA, which is expected to be more usable for native speakers. However, systematic studies on the usability of localized CAPTCHAs are rare, and a general procedure for the design of usable localized CAPTCHA is still unavailable. Here, we comprehensively explored the design of CAPTCHAs based on Chinese characters from a usability perspective: cognitive processes of solving alphanumeric and Chinese CAPTCHAs are analyzed, followed by a usability comparison of those two types of CAPTCHAs and the evaluation of intrinsic design factors of Chinese CAPTCHAs. It was found that Chinese CAPTCHAs could be equally usable comparing with alphanumeric ones. Meanwhile, guidelines for the design of usable Chinese CAPTCHAs were also presented. Moreover, those design practices were also summarized as a general procedure which is expected to be applicable for the design of CAPTCHAs based on other languages.

Four-Dimensional Usability Investigation of Image CAPTCHAJunnan Yu, Xuna Ma, Ting Han
Image CAPTCHA, aiming at effectively distinguishing human users from malicious script attacks, has been an important mechanism to protect online systems from spams and abuses. Despite the increasing interests in developing and deploying image CAPTCHAs, the usability aspect of those CAPTCHAs has hardly been explored systematically. In this paper, the universal design factors of image CAPTCHAs, such as image layouts, quantities, sizes, tilting angles and colors were experimentally evaluated through the following four dimensions: eye-tracking, efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction. The cognitive processes revealed by eye-tracking indicate that the distribution of eye gaze is equally assigned to each candidate image and irrelevant to the variation of image contents. In addition, the gazing plot suggests that more than 70% of the participants inspected CAPTCHA images row-by-row, which is more efficient than scanning randomly. Those four-dimensional evaluations essentially suggest that square and horizontal rectangle are the preferred layout; image quantities may not exceed 16 while the image color is insignificant. Meanwhile, the image size and tilting angle are suggested to be larger than 55 pixels x 55 pixels and within -45~45 degrees, respectively. Basing on those usability experiment results, we proposed a design guideline that is expected to be useful for developing more usable image CAPTCHAs.
